Tommy FlanaganTommy Flanagan Trio & Sextet (aka Bash) ... CD
Prevue, 1961. Used ... $11.99
A different version of the album Bash – recorded for the Jazztime label in 1961, with leadership by Dave Bailey – a set that's filled with fire, soul, and imagination – recorded as part of the drummer's amazing (and amazingly short) early 60s run as a leader! The date smokes with the same sort of energy as Dave's great "Gutter" albums for Epic – a groove that's part Blue Note, part Prestige, and carried off with so much precision, we wonder why Bailey never recorded more as a leader. Players are all wonderful – Kenny Dorham's on trumpet, Curtis Fuller's on trombone, Frank Haynes is on tenor, and Tommy Flanagan's on piano. Ben Tucker provides excellent basswork, and proves that him and Bailey were one of the best hardbop rhythm teams ever! Cuts include "Grand Street", "Osmosis", "Soul Support", and "An Oscar For Oscar". CD features 7 tracks in all – including some that haven't been on other versions of this session. Other titles include "Just Friends", "Like Someone In Love", and "BMT Express". CD
(1998 pressing, barcode has a cutout hole.)

✨✧ Red RodneyRed Rodney – 1957 ... CD
Prevue/Xanadu, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest 50s sessions from bop trumpet legend Red Rodney – a set that has longer tracks than some previous albums – and a very hip lineup with Ira Sullivan on tenor, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Oscar Pettiford on bass, and either Elvin Jones or Philly Joe Jones on drums! Titles include "Ubas", "Box 2000", "Red Arrow", and "Star Eyes". CD
(Out of print 1998 Prevue/Classic Records pressing.)

✨✧ Lucky ThompsonBrown Rose ... CD
Prevue, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Some of Lucky Thompson's most obscure recordings from the Paris scene of the mid 50s – a great complement to the better-known material issued on the Jazz In Paris and Fresh Sound CDs! The conditions here are similar to those – in that Thompson's working in well-chosen groups with drummer Dave Pochonet, in tightly arranged nonet formation, but in a way that still has Lucky's solo work center stage. The sound is totally great – with lots of those raspy, earthy tones that we love in Thompson's work – and the other players often just complement Lucky in the background, almost as if they were recorded at a slightly lower level. CD features 12 tracks from sessions recorded March 29 and April 17, 1956 – titles that include "Once Upon A Time", "A Sunkissed Rose", "Still Waters", "Brown Rose", "Portrait Of Django", "Distant Sound", "Quick As A Flash", "The Parisian Knight", "Street Scene", and "To You Dear One". CD

✨✧ JR MonteroseMessage ... CD
Jaro/Prevue, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
This one's almost impossible to find! A beautiful session cut by the obscure tenor player J.R. Monterose – a musician who never made it big by jazz standards, but who was always one of the most respected players amongst his jazz contemporaries. The session's got Monterose's unique tenor in a setting with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums – and as you might expect from that cast, the set's a great mix of hardbop and modernism. Titles include "Straight Ahead", "Short Bridge", "Green Street Scene", and "Chafic". CD

Paul QuinichetteVice Pres ... LP
EmArcy, Early 50s. Very Good ... $24.99
Some of the greatest work as a leader ever cut by tenorist Paul Quinichette – longtime Basie alum, and a key player who was the "Vice Pres" next to Lester Young's "Pres". The record is one of the best full-length albums by Quinichette from the early days, and combines material from a 10" LP and an earlier e.p. into a sparkling set of a dozen tracks that includes "Cross Fire", "The Hook", "Samie", "Shad Roe", "Prevue", "Sandstone", "Bot Bot", and "Paul's Bunion". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label drummer logo pressing. Vinyl has oxidation. Cover has a split bottom seam, splitting on top seam, light surface wear, aging.)
