How old was Foster Sylvers when he cut this record? Seven? Eight? Whatever the case, the little tyke forever changed the face of funky music with the incredible cut "Misdemeanor" – one of those chunky funky numbers that sounds like nothing else we've ever heard, and which has been in demand on the groove scene for years and years. The cut's simply amazing, and it kicks off a record that's pretty darn tasty all-around. Young Foster's singing in kind of a Jackson Five mode – but he's got some great arrangements by Jerry Peters, David Crawford, and King Errison that keep things pretty funky on many tracks, and nice and soulful on the rest. A good portion of the numbers are covers, but even those are done nicely. Titles include the classic "Misdemeanor", plus "I'm Your Puppet", "Hey Little Girl", "Mockingbird", "I'll Get You In The End", "Swooperman", "More Love", "Happy Face", "Lullabye/Uncle Albert", and "Only My Love Is True". The legendary Chess Records is best known as a home to important blues, soul, and gospel records from the postwar years – but back in the 50s, the label also did a pretty great job with the harder side of the rock and roll spectrum too! Maybe that's no surprise, given that the Chess Brothers always had a great ear for new and unusual music – to a point where they sometimes issued work that wasn't recorded in their Chicago studios, which is the case with a fair bit of the cuts on this collection – many of which hail from points farther south, from territory that was bristling with new energy from rockabilly pioneers at the time! There's a few more familiar Chess artists mixed in here with more obscure artists who only issued singles for the label – and the massive 33 track package comes with very detailed notes on all the tracks within. Although Hubert Laws went onto cut some pretty snoozy fusion records in later years, these early Atlantic albums find him playing with a great soul jazz groove, laying down nice slightly-funky flute solos with a very good groove. The group on the Laws of Jazz includes a young Chick (then called "Armando") Corea on piano, then a much more Latin-tinged player – and the rest of the group includes Richard Davis on bass and Bobby Thomas on drums. Laws' flute is the main solo vehicle – and tracks include "Bimbe Blue", "Miss Thing", "All Soul", and "Black Eyed Peas & Rice". A great little set of Latin jazz! At the time of Flute By-Laws, Hubert Laws was playing with Mongo Santamaria's group – and for this second solo outing, Laws borrows a lot of grooves from Mongo's bag, and also hits a few tasty lines of his own. There's some killer tight Latin numbers with a groovy 60s feel – like "Bloodshot", "Let Her Go", "Baila Cinderella", and "No You'd Better Not" – plus some other tasty jazz numbers like "Mean Lene" and "Strange Girl". Players include a host of Latin jazz crossover talents like Chick Corea, Jimmy Owens, Garnett Brown, and Ray Lucas – as well as strict Latin players like Cachao and Victor Pantoja – and the album's one of Laws' best ever! Classic club from Webster Lewis – and much more of an all-out disco affair than some of his later work! The record introduces Lewis' all-encompassing style – as he writes, arranges, and produces the album at a level that easily matches that of Barry White – who would later emerge as a mentor for Lewis, introducing him as part of the later Love Unlimited Orchestra records. The group here is billed as "Webster Lewis & The Post-Pop Space-Rock Be-Bop Gospel Tabernacle Orchestra & Chorus" – a pretty good way to describe the soaringly full sound of the album – one that's built up from Webster's keyboards with lots of added strings and rhythms, plus occasional backing vocals from a female chorus. Most of the focus here is instrumental, though – filled with great tunes that include "On The Town", "Love Is The Way", "Do It With Style", "Song Of Joy", "Goodnight Baby Girl", "Since I've Been Gone", and "Saturday Night Steppin Out". The second album White Stripes and the first where they really start to show a ton of range, not that they were really as pigeonholed as garage rock and punk blues earlier on as some thought, but really doing a ton more here in both mood and instrumentation, without ever obscuring the rawer roots. If the hype got a little unbearable back in the day as the mainstream latched out with such a fury, in hindsight, they really were pretty incredible and worth getting excited about! A (sadly) posthumous release from Amy Winehouse – a voice we loved for a couple good years before knowing how troubled she was in real life and now lament the loss of – and this set, largely put together by producer Salaam Remi turned out surprisingly well! It'd be pretty easy to bow to cynicism, but for our money, there's more than enough strong stuff here. It features production by Remi, plus Mark Ronson on a couple tracks, and it's a mix of styles that ably demonstrate Amy's depth as an interpreter. There's some great, kinda late night jazzy soul numbers, classic level 60s R&B and thoroughly modern hip hop soul – all with strong vocal performances from Amy. By the time of her big hit "Lady Marmalade" in the mid 70s, Patti Labelle – and group-mates Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash – had been knocking around for many years cutting records. Their style was always interesting – especially as Labelle moved from simple girl group material into some of their more righteous work of the early 70s. By the time they hit the Epic label, though, they emerged as a full-blown hit act – working with Allen Toussaint on some funky material, and watching Patti emerge as a strong solo act on her own. A pretty great anthology of recordings by New Orleans vocal legend Aaron Neville produced by Allen Toussaint – one CD featuring great early work from Aaron, singles from his early days recording for the Minit label on one disc – and some great, badly overlooked Sansu recordings from the late 60s and right on up to the mid 70s, leading to the formation of the Neville Brothers group! We've long loved the early 60s Minit recordings, which range from little regional R&B numbers, to really beautiful ballady numbers with Crescent City piano and Aaron's uniquely soulful phrasing. The Sansu sessions are just as great and more stylistcally varied, with organ-drenched southern soul numbers, many in a slower grooving style that really makes beautiful use of Aaron's voice – which had matured greatly by this point! James Brown left a mighty legacy in soul music over the years – not just his own recordings, but a host of other great work inspired by his own genius – recorded by artists who all do a pretty darn good job of copping his groove! This excellent set looks at the prime years of that legacy – the late 60s/early 70s funky 45 underground, which was filled with James Brown-inspired tunes from a variety of artists from all over the country. Yet like most attempts to imitate genius, the real charm here is when the groups go slightly wrong – when they step out of line from straight JB copycatism, and bring either their own genius, or own mistakes into play on the tracks. Compiler Gilles Petard has done a wonderful job of pulling together the best of these tracks – tunes that start out sounding a lot like James Brown, but nicely take a left turn somewhere along the way – often with surprising results! And almost even better, many of these numbers veer into real James Brown jamming territory – that great "part 2" that was almost the better part of the James Brown legacy than part 1! A trio of solo albums from Phillip Bailey – presented here with bonus material too! First up is Continuation – an 80s soul classic from Philip Bailey – stepping out here from Earth Wind & Fire in a set that has him sparkling strongly as a solo act! The vocals still have that trademark Bailey sound – a wonderful range that's never overdone, and which seems to shine especially well on the mellow and midtempo tunes in the set! Production is by George Duke, who does a lot to preserve the jazzier warmth of Bailey's previous settings – and although there's a bit more crossover potential here, the sound is still never too commercial or aimed at the charts. Titles include "It's Our Time", "Trapped", "I Know", "I'm Waitin For Your Love", "Desire", "The Good Guy's Supposed To Get The Girls", and "Your Boyfriend's Back". Next is Chinese Wall – a big breakthrough for Philip Bailey – and a record that was kind of a second-level explosion for the Earth Wind & Fire sound in the 80s! There's a definite crossover feel to the record – a style that takes Bailey's soulful vocals, and mixes them with lots of catchy hooks – in ways that push the Kalimba aesthetic even more into mainstream modes. Yet the album's still got some solid soul grounding, too – thanks to arrangements by Tom Tom and Arif Mardin – which is a nice contrast to the production by Phil Collins, who also guests on the hit "Easy Lover". Other cuts include "Time Is A Woman", "Go", "Walking On The Chinese Wall", "Photogenic Memory", "I Go Crazy", and "Children Of The Ghetto". Last is Inside Out – a set that has Philip Bailey working with Nile Rodgers, who gives him a lean, clean sound that works perfectly with his vocals! The sound is a nice change from the direction Bailey was heading in previously – a return to the focused soul of the later Earth Wind & Fire years, with his amazing lead opening up in ways that few other singers can match. Think what you want about Captain & Tennille – the set's a monumental bit of 70s pop, and one that found a way to push the 60s hipness of A&M Records to the next level! The set's got a mainstream polish, but it's the summation of all sorts of cool elements that had been bubbling under on the LA scene – not the least of which is the career of The Captain, aka Daryl Dragon – a guy with great experience in the studio, and a strong ear for a keyboard line too! The group tip their hat strongly to the Beach Boys – with a great reading of "Disney Girls", and a take of "God Only Knows" that's pretty darn nice too – next to the global hit "Love Will Keep Us Together", and other tunes that include "I Write The Songs", "Gentle Stranger", "Honey Come Love Me", and "The Good Songs". We're sure you know the group from their mega-hit oldie title cut – a garagey tune with a very catchy hook – but you might also appreciate them for the soulful finish they put on other tracks on this set, clearly inspired by groups on Atlantic, and going for a blue-eyed soul approach that they're not always known for. A wonderfully groovy score from Carlo Rustichelli – best known to the world for his famous score for Divorce Italian Style, and working here in a style that mixes tight jazzy numbers with sparer themes in kind of a Nino Rota mode! There's some nice organ in the background on some of the best tracks, and the sophisticated writing is extremely compelling – at a level that should have put this one right up there with 8 1/2 or La Dolce Vita – especially in its ability to mix together playful themes and more serious orchestrations. Most tracks are pretty short, and titles include "Distant City", "Steps", "Dusk", "Faded Longings", "Freedom", "Bebo, Goodbye", and "Fog On The River". LP, Vinyl record album

A completely cooking little live set from Aretha Franklin – massively expanded here – and a crowning moment not just in her career, but for Atlantic Records soul in general! Aretha's working here before a very enthusiastic crossover crowd at the Fillmore West in San Francisco – getting tight backing from the combo of King Curtis (Memphis Horns, Billy Preston, and Pretty Purdie in tow!) – and hitting a groove that's often rawer, grittier, and more deep-soul tuned than some of her studio sides from the time! The recording quality is totally great – and goes out of its way to preserve the presence of the audience, and showcase Ac appearance on one track, but the whole show is really Franklin's own – a majestic little live date that features the tunes "Spirit In The Dark", "Respect", "Make It With You", "Don't Play That Song", "Dr Feelgood", and "Love The One You're With". Plus, the CD features full versions of 2 tracks that were originally edited on the album – as well as 13 more bonus tracks on CD2, alternates and unused songs that include "Call Me", "Mixed Up Girl", "Share Your Love With Me", "Don't Play That Song", and "You're All I Need To Get By". Lots of great notes, excellent photos, and a much-improved version of the original album! CD

A great album of grooves from Taste Of Honey – arguably their best record, thanks to some super production by The Mizell Brothers! The elements that worked so well on the self-titled smash from the previous year are in just as fine a form here – if not better. There's an overall groove that works wonderfully well, and creates a signature Taste Of Honey sound – soulfully soaring female vocals and spacey disco soul backdrops that's works on deeper level as a whole than they got credit for after the huge crossover hit in the months and year earlier. On the production tip, Larry and Fonce really know how to make the girls' vocals glide beautifully in the instrumention – using all the talents they honed in the jazz funk years, and working up a groove that's catchy, yet still pretty darn soulful. The Montanas look like a bunch of groovy 60s cats on the cover – and while they definitely had some great hits during the British Invasion years, they also kept on cutting some very cool material well into the 70s – all of which is included in this overstuffed set! The work begins where you might imagine – tuneful British rock, with great harmonies and catchy hooks – but as the 60s slide into the 70s, the group changes their lineup, and really start taking on some great new material – the tracks here that really make the collection great! Things are still pretty catchy in the 70s, but the pop modes have shifted a lot – bringing influences from psych and other new styles, and opening up a new sort of production style too – maybe a hint at the more compressed modes that UK acts would use in the 7ts generation. If you only ever thought of The Montanas as a group with a few oldies hits, you'll really be surprised here as you make your way through the 42 track selection of cuts that includes "Doctor Nero", "Difference Of Opinion", "Teardrops", "You Got Me Wrong Girl", "Miss Mackenzie", "Sammy", "Mystery", "No Smoke Without Fire", "Henry Ford", "Suzanne", "Love Machine", "Seaport", "Goodbye Little Girl", "Ciao Baby", "You've Got To Be Loved", "I Need To Fly", "Round About", and two versions of "One Thing Or Another" – plus a cover of the Grateful Dead classic "Uncle John's Band".
