✨✧ Barbara & ErniePrelude To ... CD
Cotillion/Real Gone, 1971. New Copy ... $5.99 13.98
A folk funk classic from the early 70s – and a weird little record that has a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! The arrangements are quite soulful, almost funky at times – with a righteous undercurrent that reminds us of Richard Evans or Charles Stepney at Cadet Records. But the vocals – by singer Barbara Massey – have a flanged-out quality that's clearly overdubbed, creating a double-voiced sound that's almost a bit like Brasil 66! This mix of modes is really great – completely unique, and sublime throughout – with a vibe that was years ahead of its time, and which is finally beginning to get some recognition these many years later. Arrangements are by the pair, but Deodato also had a hand in the record too – and the core combo of musicians includes Grady Tate on drums, Ralph McDonald on percussion, and Sam Brown on guitar – alongside more guitars from Ernie and keyboards and piano from Barbara. Tracks include "Searching the Circle", "Do You Know", "For You", "Play With Fire", "My Love & I", "Satisfied", and "Prelude" – plus a wild remake of "Somebody to Love"! CD

DeodatoPrelude ... LP
CTI, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $13.99
A legendary album from the 70s funk scene – and one of the crowning achievements of keyboard maestro Eumir Deodato! Deodato got his start during the bossa years of the 60s – where his sophisticated charts were already enough to make his career a landmark – but in the following decade he picked up the Fender Rhodes, and really took off in a great new direction with classic records like this! The set's a wonderful blend of larger charts and jazzy soloing – with sublime Rhodes lines from the leader, plus a mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation in the best CTI mode – underscored by percussion from both Ray Barretto and Airto. The features Deodato's remake of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" into the funky "2001" – soaring with Fender Rhodes lines that set a new standard for the instrument, with a funky undercurrent that few would have expected for the tune. Other tracks are nice too – and include a great bossa-y version of "Baubles Bangles & Beads", plus "Spirit Of Summer", "September 13", and "Carly & Carole". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original Brazilian pressing on One Way. Cover has surface wear.)

Red GarlandRed Garland At the Prelude Vol 1/Live! ... CD
Prestige, 1959. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the harder to find Red Garland sessions on Prestige – two records' worth of material that was issued on 4 different albums! The set is noteworthy not only for an excellent stretched out trio performance by Garland – working here with Specs Wright on drums and Jimmy Rowser on bass – but also because it was the first-ever live recording done by Prestige, recorded on location at the Prelude nightclub in Harlem. Red's a little bit less mannered than usual, and he opens up nicely in a way you don't hear on his studio albums! CD

Raven (Australia), 1972/1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Preludes, a million-seller, but also a record that no home should be without – and easily one of THE greatest keyboard albums of the 70s! The album's the one that features Deodato's remake of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" into the funky "2001" – soaring with Fender Rhodes lines that set a new standard for the instrument, with a funky undercurrent that few would have expected for the tune. Other tracks are nice too – and include a great bossa-y version of "Baubles Bangles & Beads", plus "Spirit Of Summer", "September 13", and "Carly & Carole". Deodato 2 has funky keyboards galore – and is one of the greatest records ever from this legendary Brazilian jazz talent! The album follows nicely off Deodato's Prelude classic for CTI – and like that one, this set's built on long-flowing tunes that rise and fall with a wonderful sense of rhythm – a sublime electric piano groove that's quite different than anything Deodato recorded before – and possibly never realized this perfectly again after his CTI years. Other players include Stanley Clarke on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Hubert Laws on flute – and titles include the massive Latin funk track "Super Strut", plus the tunes "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Skyscrapers", and a great version of "Nights In White Satin". ✨✧ 9th CreationReaching For The Top ... CD
Prelude/Past Due, 1977. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
Damn funky work from 9th Creation – a group who recorded this set for the mostly-disco Prelude label, but who still serve up the same heavy sound as their earlier work! There's a tightness here that few other groups can touch – that special magic that you can hear when a larger funk ensemble somehow manages to groove with the sharpness of a quartet – but with this fuller sound that really infuses the songs with a fantastic current of soul! The set's got a few mellower moments mixed in with the groovers – the sort of balance that only Earth Wind & Fire might have gotten this right – and there's also maybe a bit more of a spiritual vibe to some of the lyrics, in a mighty nice way. Titles include "Come Back Home", "He's Coming", "A Good Time", "The Time Has Come", "Reaching For The Top", and "It Ain't Right". CD

✨✧ Gene AmmonsMakes It Happen ... LP
Cadet, 1950. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
An interesting album for Gene Ammons – one that was issued in the late 60s with a very sexy-looking cover, but which actually features recordings of much earlier vintage! The sides on the set were recorded in 1950, and they've got a sound that's moody, echoey, and which shows the soulfulness that Ammons had at this early period – a rich contribution to the tenor sound at the time – caught by a young Chess Records with plenty of dark overtones that makes the material differ somewhat from Gene's dates of the time for Prestige. Titles include "Once In A While", "It's The Talk Of The Town", "My Foolish Heart", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Can Anyone Explain", and "It's You Or No One". LP, Vinyl record album

A classic set from the legendary Biddu – one of the best European maestros working on the 70s disco scene! The album mixes together strings, keyboards, voices, and uptempo rhythms – sliding along in a style that shares plenty with Prelude and Salsoul at the time – and which made Biddu one of the most trusted overseas forces for delivering a soulful disco number. Vocals are mostly of the chorus type, when they appear at all – and titles include "Bionic Boogie", "Soft & Sexy", "Chic Chica Chi Chica Chic", "Rain Forest", "Laura", "Trippin On A Soul Cloud", and "Rock Me With Your Love". ✨✧ Roy BrooksUnderstanding ... CD
Reel To Reel, 1970. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing unissued live set from drummer Roy Brooks – done at that moment when he was hitting the 70s with some very righteous energy, of the sort that only saw brief exposure on albums like The Free Slave, or some of Roy's own self-released titles! This album is a much-needed addition to that tiny catalog of spiritual avant gems – and it may well be the best of the bunch, as the live setting allows for long tracks that pack a hell of a punch all the way through – not just from Roy's work on drums, but also from this amazing quintet that includes Woody Shaw on trumpet, Carlos Garnett on tenor, Harold Mabern on piano, and Cecil McBee on bass! All players are at the height of their powers – often playing with even more edge than you might expect – and the album's as much a tribute to the genius of Shaw, Garnett, and Mabern as it is to the visionary leadership of Brooks. Titles include "Understanding", "Zoltan", "Taurus Woman", "The Theme", "Billie's Bounce", and "Prelude To Understanding" – all very long. CD

Crazy World Of Arthur BrownCrazy World Of Arthur Brown ... LP
Track, 1968. Very Good ... $13.99
A wild, far reaching psychedelic rock kaleidoscope from Arthur Brown and his Crazy World! The sounds range from wailing organs and heavy drum backed bigness, to more of a tightly grooving r&b garage influenced trip as the core backdrop – with vocals ranging from falsetto freakouts to rambling speak singing craziness and bursts of brass. Nothing's predictable from one passage to the next, but the group sets a heady groove before it all gets freaky, and they find it again before insanity sets in. Titles include "Prelude-Nightmare", "Fire", "Come & Buy", "Spontaneous Apple Creation", "Child Of My Kingdom", "I Put A Spell On You" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy, 1975. Used ... $8.99
A second volume of Duke Ellington material from Kenny Burrell – and like the first, an extremely fresh look at the tunes – given the way things change up throughout the sessions! The presentation here is nicely varied – not just a big band take on the Duke, nor some small combo musings – but instead a mixture of both, all with Burrell's guitar at the center, but also moving the spotlight to a host of other players along the way – including trombonist Quentin Jackson, trumpeters Snooky Young and Thad Jones, organist Jimmy Smith, and tenorists Joe Henderson and Jerome Richardson – all of whom add some surprisingly soulful currents to the set. Titles include "Jeep Is Jumpin", "Solitude", "In A Sentimental Mood", "Azure", "Just Squeeze Me", "Come Sunday", "Prelude To A Kiss", "I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart", and "Orson". CD

Cozy ColeCozy Cole (aka Cozy Conception Of Carmen) ... LP
Charlie Parker/Everest, 1961. Near Mint- ... $2.99 4.99
Bizet never sounded so groovy – and the album's a very unique jazz version of his famous opera Carmen, handled by drummer Cozy Cole with plenty of swinging rhythms! Cozy always had a flair for the exotic in his work, and the music of Carmen turns out to be a perfect choice for his driving style of drums – augmented here by a bit of extra percussion that further enhances the Spanish tinges in the music, and topped off by some well-crafted horn parts by a small group that includes Jerome Richardson on baritone sax, clarinet, piccolo, and bass clarinet! Bob Hammer contributes some piano, organ, and glockenspiel to the record – the last of which further enhances the rhythmic pulse of the tunes – and far from being an operatic snoozer, the whole album's a surprising groove fest we really didn't expect! Titles include "Prelude", "Chorus Of Street Boys", "Habanera", "Seguidilla", "Flower Song", "Sextet", "Entr'acte", and "Castanet Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

Chick CoreaMy Spanish Heart ... LP
Polydor, 1976. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
Given that Chick Corea first got his start working in the New York Latin scene back in the 60s, the album's a bit of a return to his roots – even if the general theme here is Spanish, and not Afro-Cuban! The Corea Spanish Heart here is cast in some darker, more contemplative tones than more traditional Latin sides – but it borrows a wonderful array of modes from genres past – including bits of strings, percussion, and an overall more ambitious approach that sometimes shows up in Chick's piano work, or in the general construction of the tunes. The double-length set features a wide variety of Spanish-influenced numbers – played by Corea on acoustic piano and a variety of keyboards, with other players who include Don Alias, Jean Luc Ponty, Stanley Clarke, and Steve Gadd. Titles inclu de "Love Castle", "The Gardens", "Night Streets", "The Hilltop", "Armando's Rhumba", "Prelude To El Bozo", "Spanish Fantasy", and "My Spanish Heart". LP, Vinyl record album

Gary's the son of Bing, natch – and he's following here in his pop's footsteps, singing jazz standards with backing conducted by Bud Shank. The interesting thing is that the session was actually recorded in Germany – and the group features some hip Europeans, like Roland Kovac on piano, Atilla Zoller on guitar, Jerry Van Rooyen on trumpet, and Hans Koller on tenor. Shank plays as well – and titles include "Blue Prelude", "Exactly Like You", "Please Send Me Someone To Love", "One For My Baby", and "Love Is Just Around The Corner". LP, Vinyl record album

A brilliant album from trumpeter Kenny Dorham – a set that's maybe a bit less-known than some of his records for Blue Note, but a set that shares a lot with those classics – as it's got that similar mix of larger compositional structures and more open solo moments! Kenny's own playing is tremendous, and the rest of the group is wonderful – a unique lineup with Jackie McLean on alto, Bobby Timmons on piano, Teddy Smith on bass, and JC Moses on drums – all working with Kenny in a slightly Latin tinged mode that features some really shimmering trumpet work! ✨✧ Kenny Dorham/Jackie McLeanMatador/Inta Somethin' ... CD
Blue Note, 1962. Used ... $14.99
This is the kind of CD that makes us love reissues! Why? Well, because it features 2 incredibly rare jazz albums – both of which never turn up on vinyl, and are lovingly packaged here on 1 CD filled with a dozen hard bop grooves. The album Matador was originally issued under Kenny Dorham's name, and Inta Somethin' was issued under Jackie McLean's name – but both players are sort of co-leaders on both albums, and it's fitting to pair the records together here because they represent the unique union of these two different players. Dorham's lyrical trumpet is an unlikely match for McLean's edgey alto, but the records work well, and with a modernist groove that's extremely compelling. Titles include "El Matador", "San Francisco Beat", "Prelude", and versions of "Una Mas" and "Melanie" – both of which were recorded later by the artists on Blue Note. CD

The mix of piano, guitar, bass, and drums is a bit unusual for Ellington – and Pass especially has this sharply ringing tone that really brings a different flavor to many of the numbers – a kind of stepping, pulsating quality that's even in contrast to his other work from this period. The rhythm section duo here is especially vibrant – rich basslines from Mads Vinding, and some tightly snapping drums from Billy Hart – who has this way of punctuating the tunes differently than previous drummers in the trio – creating a whole new scenario of swing for Hank to work with. The second of two groundbreaking albums for the Paris jazz scene. Although Loussier's formula was often copied during the 60s, at the time of these recordings, his mix of jazz and classical styles was fairly revolutionary – and a perfect way to link the postwar European love of jazz with older musical traditions on the continent. And sure, Bach got overdone during the 60s by artists like Swingle Singers or Walter Carlos – but this set's some of the first jazz Bach ever recorded, and thanks to some great rhythm work by Christian Garros and Pierre Michelot, it still sounds pretty darn jazzy! A heady bit of progressive rock from Marsupilami – about as high-concept as you might guess from the cover! The record features five extended songs that are all filled with plenty of jamming on guitar, keyboards, flute, and saxes – all in a suite of tunes that vaguely hint at the politics and drama of the Arena in ancient Rome, but in ways that let most of the instrumentation handle the excitement, while the vocals take second stage. We've always wondered if the album was mis-understood by record shoppers – due to the fact that the title, which is printed in bigger type here, is similar to the name of the Italian prog group from the 70s. Tracks include "Prelude To The Arena", "Peace Of Rome", "The Arena", and "Time Shadows". LP, Vinyl record album

Like those sets, there's a perfect sense of clarity here – the best essence of the AACM scene, taken to its most adventurous level by Roscoe – who's working way beyond music here, and is into a rich array of tones, textures, and sonic shapes – really amazing elements to come from a familiar alto, soprano, or tenor saxophone! He's got some great creative help on the project too – Muhal Richard Abrams on piano, George Lewis on trombone, and Spencer Barefield on guitar – the last of whom is darker here than on most of his later recordings. Obviously, the sensitivity that Lewis and Abrams bring to the record is a perfect match for Mitchell's direction – and the long tracks draw much from the spontaneous interplay between the three players. Titles include "Tnoona", "Music For Trombone & B Flat Soprano", "Cards", and "Olobo". Plus, this amazing new version features 4 great unissued tracks – including a beautiful version of "Naima", plus "Prelude To Naima", "Dastura", and "Nonaah". CD

Timeless (Holland), 1988. Used ... $8.99 11.99
A nice little record that's very much along the lines of the duet sessions that pianist Horace Parlan cut with Archie Shepp – done with a similar open, soulful style that really brings a lot of personal energy to these tunes penned by Duke Ellington! This might be the first time we've ever heard tenorist Joe Van Enkhuizen, but he's a surprisingly great player – and one who carves out these raspy lines on his instrument that fit really well with the well-crafted lines from Parlan's piano – a lot more subtle and spacious than during his Blue Note years, but maybe even more powerful because of that. Titles include "Serenade To Sweden", "I Got It Bad", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Melancholy", "Sophisticated Lady", and "Creole Blues/Tonight I Shall Sleep". CD

Pee Wee Russell QuartetAsk Me Now! ... CD
Impulse, 1965. Used ... $8.99
A record that will blow your mind – way different than you might expect from the cover! Sure, Pee Wee was a bit of a traditionalist on his instrument – the clarinet – but he's working here in a starkly modern way that almost recalls some of the best 50s work of Jimmy Guiffre, or some of the earlier sides by Steve Lacy. There's still a swing-based approach to the tunes, but they're handled in a spare style that features equal interplay between Russell, trombonist Marshall Brown, bassist Russell George, and drummer Ronnie Bedford – a great player who really makes the album sparkle! The tracks include a couple of Thelonious Monk titles – "Ask Me Now!" and "Hackensack" as well as a couple of Marshall Brown originals – "Licorice Stick" and "Calypso Walk". Other titles are Ornette Coleman's "Turnaround", Coltrane's "Some Other Blues" and Ellington's "Prelude To A Kiss". CD

Philippe SardeLes Choses De La Vie/Max Et Les Ferrailleurs ... CD
CAM (Italy), 1969/1971. Used ... $11.99 14.99
Brilliant work by Philippe Sarde – in two different modes! Sarde's score for Les Choses De La Vie is incredibly haunting – mostly spare variations on a sad, dreamy little melody that's played in the film as the car of the main character slowly crumbles in an accident. The tune only features swells of strings and piano, but it's compelling enough to hear in a number of variations here! Titles include "L'Accident Ralenti", "Prelude A L'Accident", "La Chanson D'Helene", and "La Mort". Max Et Les Ferrailleurs is an excellent funky French soundtrack – and the best cuts have a cool French jazz sound that mixes guitar, vibes, trumpet, and hard on-the-beat vamping by the bass and drums. You may know the cool cut "Juke Boxes Chez Saidani" from a few compilations, and the album's got a few more cuts that have a variation on a similar theme, including "Chante Par Mouloudji", which is a vocal version of the song. "Juke Boxes" features great popping bass and electric sitar – and other tracks include "Le Bal Des Ferrailleurs", "Description Des Ferrailleurs", and "Generique". CD

Guitarist Bola Sete made some of his most important American recordings of the 60s on the San Francisco scene – but this huge set of unreleased tracks captures the Brazilian player farther up north, as he works in a sweet set of trio recordings captured at a small club in Seattle! The music is a great counterpart to some of Bola's recordings for Fantasy Records during the same time, but also captures the guitarist with a bit more complexity too – some of the qualities that he wouldn't always show on record at this level until the 70s, but which were clearly part of his sound right from the start! The group's a trio – with Sebastiao Neto on bass and Paulinho Magalhaes on drums – and titles include "Soul Samba", "Deve Ser Amor", "Malaguena", "Garota De Ipanema", "Astrurias", "Consolacao", "Tristeza", "A Feliciade", "Prelude No 3", "Spanish Dance No 5", "Shadow Of Your Smile", "Satin Doll", "One Note Samba", and "Corcovado". The Johnny Smith sound is a wonderful one – not just the sound that he makes with his groundbreaking work on the strings of the guitar, but also the way he records the instrument – which set a new standard in jazz guitar albums, and also helped pave the way for countless generations to come! A date like this is a great example of the standard-setting work that Smith was able to give us in his prime – and the approach slightly updates the Smith guitar sound of the early 50s – clarifying it a bit, but still keeping that great tone right out front – with a group that includes Hank Jones on piano, George Duvivier on bass, and Ed Shaughnessey on drums. The feel of the record is really tremendous – extremely soulful, with Lonnie jamming away on keyboards as the band grooves up these cool spacey rhythms – stepping out in territory that's definitely the more cosmic side of jazz funk, with those righteous currents that always made Lonnie so great. The whole thing's wonderful – with loads of great electric work, and an overall spiritual vibe that's every bit as great as his albums for Flying Dutchman – and players include Donald Smith on flute and a bit of vocals, Dave Hubbard on tenor and soprano sax, and Lonnie himself on Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and Arp. Five years of amazing sounds from Dexter Wansel – a keyboardist who could be as far out as his fiercest fusion contemporaries of the 70s, yet also groove with enough soulful styles to be a key part of the Philadelphia International explosion of the 70s! This massive collection really gets at all that made Wansel so great back in the day – his incredible ear for inventive arrangements, spacey way of spinning out a soul tune, and great sense of balance that never made his music sound overdone – always an effortless blend of jazz, soul, and funk – in ways that few of his contemporaries could ever hope to touch! Many of these tunes have vocals, but they also have plenty of keyboard solos too – kind of like CTI hitting a Philly groove, but one that was definitely reserved for the hipper spaces of the clubs – or the hipper clubs out there in outer space. 2CD set features great notes, sublime sound, and a killer batch of 32 tracks that includes "Life On Mars", "Disco Lights", "Let Me Rock You", "I'll Never Forget My Favorite Disco (12" version)", "The Sweetest Pain", "Holdin On", "One Million Miles From The Ground", "Rings Of Saturn", "Theme From The Planets", "Funk Attack", "Stargazer", "Ode Infinitum", "Latin Love", "Let Me Rock You", "Holdin On", "Prelude 1", "New Beginning", "Time Is The Teacher", "A Prophet Named KG", "I Just Want To Love You", "All Night Long", "It's Been Cool", "Voyager", and "Time Is Slipping Away". A unique album in the Duke Ellington catalog – in that it's a rare small combo outing, at a time when the Duke was mostly recording in large group mode! The album's a bit unusual in that it was done for Captiol records – as a trio date with Wendell Marshall on bass and Butch Ballard on drums – in a setting that's listed as "long after midnight" in the notes, which really hints at the more personal, intimate quality of the album – and makes it a great showcase to hear Ellington's own phrasing on the piano, at a level that's sometimes lost in a bigger ensemble. Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tremendous overview of some really important years in British music – a period that sometimes gets overlooked, due to the huge explosion of psych, prog, and other styles – but one that's equally creative in its own sort of way! First off, forget the term "folk rock" – because although that's what this music might be, it's also very different than the pop folk modes that were big on the US scene in the mid 60s – as this folk rock scene instead represented a host of British musicians really retrenching, and finding their own sort of styles – sometimes borrowing bits from the ancient past of England, other times bringing forth a contemporary way of putting over a tune – at a level that might have gotten commercial and overproduced if these guys were working on the American west coast, but which instead has a nicely unadorned quality here. At a time when most American labels (and listeners) were really leaving folk music behind, these artists were able to often work free from the needs of a big commercial hit – and make genius music that's gone on to transform many minds over the decades. The set moves way past the obvious – and features a whopping 60 tracks in all, with lots of notes in the package – and even includes a few never-issued tracks as well. Tersa Mora sings a bit of vocals at times – and titles include "Afra Jum", "Five AM", "Rumba Morena", "Samba De Amor", and "Cultural Warrior". Mora 2 is a set recorded in Detroit, but one that's got a globe's worth of elements in the mix – originally recorded in the mid 80s, but not released until a brief CD issue in the early part of the 21st Century! Despite that history, the album's a really timeless record that encompasses a world's worth of elements in jazz! Francisco Mora Catlett's at the height of his powers here – leading the group with a sense of righteous majesty that takes us back to some of the most ambitious heirs of the post-Coltrane generation, but with perhaps an oddly rhythmic twist as well – such as you might find in some of the 70s classics of Bobby Vince Paunetto. Echoes of Latin, Afro, and spiritual jazz come together as one – soaring to the skies on soulful waves of sound – brought together with a sense of focus and spirit that really moves us a lot. Players include Marcus Belgrave and John Douglass on trumpets, Sherman Mitchell on trombone, Vincent Bowens on tenor and flute, Alex Harding on baritone and bass clarinet, Kenny Cox on piano, and Rodney Whitaker on bass – and titles include "Samba/Conga De Amor", "Amazona Prelude/Dawn", "Old Man Joe", "Por Que Paro", and "Afra-Jum (parts 2 & 3)". ✨✧ DeodatoDeodato 2 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CTI, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
Funky keyboards galore – and one of the greatest records ever from this legendary Brazilian jazz talent! Plus, this CD reissue features 3 bonus tracks – "Venus", "Do It Again", and "Latin Flute"! CD

Mercury/Varese, 1996. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bernard Herrman's classic spooky score to this great Hitchcock thriller. The music is very intense, and has that great jagged edge that Herrman brought to some of his best soundtrack scoring. The tracks are long, and with a very edgey sound. Titles include "Vertigo Prelude & Rooftop", "The Beach", "The Nightmare & Dawn", and "The Necklace, The Return & Finale". Recorded in concert in 1996 by Joel McNeely conducting the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. CD

✨✧ Barney KesselBarney Kessel Plays Standards – Barney Kessel Vol 2 ... LP
Contemporary, 1954/1955. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully laidback album from Barney Kessel – gentle guitar stepping around familiar standards, but all with a hip sort of west coast 50s flavor! The main group on the album features Bob Cooper on oboe and tenor, Claude Williamson on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – but a few extra tunes, added to expand the full LP from the original 10" session, feature Hampton Hawes on piano and Red Mitchell on bass – plus the rest of the other group. Titles include "Speak Low", "Love Is Here To Stay", "How Long Has This Been Going On", "On A Slow Boat To China", "Barney's Blues", "A Foggy Day", "Prelude To A Kiss" and "64 Bars On Wilshire" – obviously not a standard! ✨✧ Max RoachLong As You're Living ... CD
Enja/Mesa Bluemoon/Rhino, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Seminal work by Max Roach – recorded in 1960, at the time when he was leading one of his best groups ever! The material was recorded live in Germany with a quintet that includes Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Stanley Turrentine on tenor, and Julian Priester on trombone – and the approach of the album takes off from the hardbop of Roach's studio sides at the time, opening things up a lot with exploratory drum work, rolling basslines, and some angular interplay between the horns that's just fantastic! The title cut – "Long As Your Living" – is done in the best version we've ever heard – and other tracks include "The Villa", "Lotus Blossom", "Night In Tunisia", and "Prelude". A great companion to the group's rare few Mercury sides from the time! CD

✨✧ Wendell HarrisonForever Duke ... CD
Wenha, 1990. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wendell Harrison pays tribute to the music of Duke Ellington – but in a way that's quite fresh, compared to other Ellington tribute records! Harrison's working here in an angular soul jazz mode – one that works loosely with Ellington's tunes, and opens them up a lot with Harrison's inventive arrangements and soulful extrapolations. The group features a small clarinet ensemble that brings a nice tone to the tunes – and guest players on the session include pianist Harold McKinney and trumpeter Charles Tolliver. Titles include "Prelude To A Kiss", "Drop Me Off In Harlem", and "Sophisticated Lady" – plus 2 great Harrison originals, "April" and "Boomerang". CD

✨✧ Gerry MulliganNight Lights (with bonus track) ... CD
Philips/Mercury, 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really nice one from Gerry – an oft-overlooked mid 60s session, one that has him working with a sextet that includes Jim Hall, Art Farmer, and Bob Brookmeyer, in addition to usual Mulligan rhythm-mates Bill Crow and Dave Bailey. There's a nice soulful bottom to the set, and stronger interplay from the horns than you might get in a Mulligan album of a few years before – nothing fancy, but a strong set of original tunes that break from the mode of the 50s. Titles include "Tell Me When", "Festive Minor", "Wee Small Hours", "Prelude In E Minor", and "Night Lights". CD also features a bonus 1965 version of "Night Lights" – with Gerry on clarinet, Pete Jolly on piano, and an added string section. CD

✨✧ Joe WilderSoftly With Feeling (aka Wilder N Wilder) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Savoy, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best dates ever as a leader from trumpeter Joe Wilder – and one of the few to have a really relaxed, open sort of format! Joe's not tied up in gimmicks or larger groups here – and he really sparkles in the company of a quartet that features Hank Jones on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – players that really match Wilder's inherent sense of soul and lyricism, as he waxes some beautiful solos on the set. There's a nice sort of blueness in Joe's tone, but one that's never too forced or cliched – and titles include "Mad About The Boy", "Six Bit Blues", "Darn That Dream", "Prelude To A Kiss", and "My Heart Stood Still". Le Smoke Disque, 1970s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A heavily funky and far reaching collection of tunes written by the Godfather – eclectic 60s & 70s material from all over the globe – each with a unique approach, but perfectly connected in their displays of JB's boundless funky spirit! The set includes a few tracks familiar to global deep funk diggers – but the majority of the tunes are quite fresh to our ears, and all of it's excellent, anyway. A tight Italian take on the sound from the Showman, brassy fury from the University Of Illinois Jazz Band, Latin funk from Rabbits & Carrots, a group harmonies approach from The Impalas, and much more! Includes "I Feel Good" by Os Incriveis, "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" by Jr & The Preludes, "Lickin' Stick" by Soul Sounds, "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose" and "Sex Machine" by Rabbits & Carrots, "Super Bad" by Kashmere Stage Band, "Think About It" by Esquires Now, "There Was A Time/Cold Sweat (Medley)" by Victor Olaiya & International All Stars, "Soul" by Impalas, "Get On The Good Foot" Harrison High School, "Mother Popcorn" by Les Watson & The Panthers and more! 19 tracks in all. After the sound of Detroit, the groove of Philly is perhaps one of the strongest in Northern Soul – as you'll hear on this overstuffed set of tracks licensed from producer Weldon McDougall! The package features some nicely under-discovered Philly gems from years back – most of them harder groovers cut by Weldon with a strong bounce on the bottom and soaring vocals on the top!
