Red GarlandRed Garland At the Prelude Vol 1/Live! ... CD
Prestige, 1959. Used ... $6.99
One of the harder to find Red Garland sessions on Prestige – two records' worth of material that was issued on 4 different albums! The set is noteworthy not only for an excellent stretched out trio performance by Garland – working here with Specs Wright on drums and Jimmy Rowser on bass – but also because it was the first-ever live recording done by Prestige, recorded on location at the Prelude nightclub in Harlem. Red's a little bit less mannered than usual, and he opens up nicely in a way you don't hear on his studio albums! CD

✨✧ DeodatoPrelude ... CD
CTI, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary album from the 70s funk scene – and one of the crowning achievements of keyboard maestro Eumir Deodato! Deodato got his start during the bossa years of the 60s – where his sophisticated charts were already enough to make his career a landmark – but in the following decade he picked up the Fender Rhodes, and really took off in a great new direction with classic records like this! The set's a wonderful blend of larger charts and jazzy soloing – with sublime Rhodes lines from the leader, plus a mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation in the best CTI mode – underscored by percussion from both Ray Barretto and Airto. The features Deodato's remake of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" into the funky "2001" – soaring with Fender Rhodes lines that set a new standard for the instrument, with a funky undercurrent that few would have expected for the tune. Other tracks are nice too – and include a great bossa-y version of "Baubles Bangles & Beads", plus "Spirit Of Summer", "September 13", and "Carly & Carole". CD

CTI/Vocalion (UK), 1972/1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of classics from Deodato – back to back on a single high-quality CD! First up is Prelude – a legendary album from the 70s funk scene – and one of the crowning achievements of keyboard maestro Eumir Deodato! Other tracks are nice too – and include a great bossa-y version of "Baubles Bangles & Beads", plus "Spirit Of Summer", "September 13", and "Carly & Carole". Deodato 2 is filled with funky keyboards galore – and one of the greatest records ever from this legendary Brazilian jazz talent! The album follows nicely off Deodato's Prelude classic for CTI – and like that one, this set's built on long-flowing tunes that rise and fall with a wonderful sense of rhythm – a sublime electric piano groove that's quite different than anything Deodato recorded before – and possibly never realized this perfectly again after his CTI years. Other players include Stanley Clarke on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, and Hubert Laws on flute – and titles include the massive Latin funk track "Super Strut", plus the tunes "Pavane For A Dead Princess", "Skyscrapers", and a great version of "Nights In White Satin". Plus, this CD reissue features 3 bonus tracks – "Venus", "Do It Again", and "Latin Flute"! CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – works on standard CD players!)

✨✧ LAXAll My Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Prelude/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $24.99
The obscure second album from LAX – even better than the first Prelude set by this west coast disco project, and with a slightly different spin as well! There's no female vocals this time around – and the lyrics are sung by Geoff Leib, who's also the keyboardist – which makes for a nice blue-eyed soul approach that dovetails nicely with the jazzier currents in the music – almost AOR, but more soaringly soulful overall! The tracks are long, and there's plenty of focus on the instrumentation – especially the way the rhythms build up – on tracks that include "Thanks But No Thanks", "Like A Simple Song Of Love", "Love Me Tonight", "Fight Back", "Possessed", and "All My Love". CD features bonus tracks – "All My Love (7" version)" and "Thanks But No Thanks (7" version)". CD

LAXLAX (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Prelude/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $24.99
As you might guess from their name, LAX hail from the west coast – one of the few groups from that part of the country to record for Prelude, and every bit as great as the club acts from the east! Ralph Benatar handles arrangements and songwriting here – and lead vocals are by Laura Lucero and Roy Galloway – trading off a bit between the tunes, but also singing together in sweet duet formation at times too! The quality of the set is higher than you'd expect from the cheesy cover – almost equal parts soul and disco – with tracks that include "Woman Ad Lib", "I Don't Wanna Be Under Cover", "Don't Stop", "Saturday Night Something Special", "Slow Disco Dancing", and "Dancin At The Disco". CD features bonus tracks – "Dancin At The Disco (7" mix)", "Dancin At The Disco (7" inst)", and "Dancin At The Disco (12" inst)". CD

A surprisingly soulful album for the Prelude label, and a great batch of smooth mellow tracks produced by David Porter in Memphis and Malaco. The record's got some tight harmony vocals, and a rhythmic approach that's more mellow soul than it is uptempo disco – although that doesn't stop the record from having a few dancefloor stormers. Titles include "On Fire", "Party (parts 1 & 2)", "I Know I Didn't Do You Wrong", "Leaving Me", and "Live While You Can". LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderful crossover club classic! The track's certainly got enough disco to earn its name – but it's also got these cool dark keyboards, jerking along in a Danceteria style that gives the track a very different twist! "I've Got A Treat" is pretty nice too – bouncy and a bit dark – with these strutting guitars and synth parts that slide over the beats to electrify the cut under the vocals! 12-inch, Vinyl record

A super-huge hit for Musique – quite a soulful group of singers, despite the strange and cheesy cover of the album – which makes them look like a bunch of roller disco porn stars caught in the studio! The group actually features great vocals by a young Jocelyn Brown, and the record's made even better by production and arrangements from Patrick Adams – working at the height of his disco powers on the set! The biggest hit here is the group's classic "In The Bush", one of the sillier songs of the late 70s club scene – but with a hook that's still pretty darn infectious! Other tracks include "Summer Love", and "Keep On Jumpin". LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful example of the really special sort of instrumental record that was coming out of Japan in the early 80s – music that's spare and minimal, but quite different than any sort of similar projects from other parts of the globe! Satoshi Ashikawa creates sounds in ways that resonate both with the ancient and contemporary, organic and urban, at a level that's very slow-building and striking in its careful use of sound and space – served up here on instrumentation that includes vibes from Midori Takada, piano from Tomoko Sono, and harp from Yuko Utsumi – always tuneful, but in ways that are more like a natural progression of sound than conventional music. Titles include "Prelude", "Still Park", "Still Sky", "Wrinkle", and "Image Under The Tree". LP, Vinyl record album

Francisco Mora CatlettMora/Mora 2 ... CD
AACE/Far Out (UK), Late 80s. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
A pair of great albums back to back – both rare albums from a percussionist who worked with Sun Ra! First up is Mora volume 1 – a legendary early set from percussionist Francisco Mora Catlett – and a really sublime blend of spiritual jazz and Latin rhythms! Mora's percussion is definitely at the core – but the set also features wonderful contributions from Vincent Bowens on tenor and soprano sax, Jerome LeDuff on berimbau, Alberto Nacif on quinto, and Detroit jazz legend Kenny Cox on piano! There's a balance here that really matches the best Strata East energy of the 70s – an open, flowing approach that's completely sublime, and very righteous too – even more so than anything Mora's done since the 70s – making this record one of his greatest achievements ever. Tersa Mora sings a bit of vocals at times – and titles include "Afra Jum", "Five AM", "Rumba Morena", "Samba De Amor", and "Cultural Warrior". Mora 2 is a set recorded in Detroit, but one that's got a globe's worth of elements in the mix – originally recorded in the mid 80s, but not released until a brief CD issue in the early part of the 21st Century! Despite that history, the album's a really timeless record that encompasses a world's worth of elements in jazz! Francisco Mora Catlett's at the height of his powers here – leading the group with a sense of righteous majesty that takes us back to some of the most ambitious heirs of the post-Coltrane generation, but with perhaps an oddly rhythmic twist as well – such as you might find in some of the 70s classics of Bobby Vince Paunetto. Echoes of Latin, Afro, and spiritual jazz come together as one – soaring to the skies on soulful waves of sound – brought together with a sense of focus and spirit that really moves us a lot. Players include Marcus Belgrave and John Douglass on trumpets, Sherman Mitchell on trombone, Vincent Bowens on tenor and flute, Alex Harding on baritone and bass clarinet, Kenny Cox on piano, and Rodney Whitaker on bass – and titles include "Samba/Conga De Amor", "Amazona Prelude/Dawn", "Old Man Joe", "Por Que Paro", and "Afra-Jum (parts 2 & 3)". A strange little record, but one with more of a jazz component than you might think! Gary's the son of Bing, natch – and he's following here in his pop's footsteps, singing jazz standards with backing conducted by Bud Shank. The interesting thing is that the session was actually recorded in Germany – and the group features some hip Europeans, like Roland Kovac on piano, Atilla Zoller on guitar, Jerry Van Rooyen on trumpet, and Hans Koller on tenor. Shank plays as well – and titles include "Blue Prelude", "Exactly Like You", "Please Send Me Someone To Love", "One For My Baby", and "Love Is Just Around The Corner". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia/4 Men With Beards, 1975. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 27.99
A seminal 70s side from Miles Davis – originally a Japanese recording, and one that returns to the solid push of the initial electric years! The record's a completely cooking little session – one that mixes the raw, noisier styles of other Davis albums with a focus, funked-up energy that's really set loose in the freer standards of the Japanese scene – all to come up with a sound that's completely otherworldly, and which is light years ahead of most mainstream fusion from the period. Pete Cosey plays some really wicked guitar and synthesizer, Al Foster kicks tremendous energy on his drums, Sonny Fortune brings a soulful depth on soprano sax and flute, and Michael Henderson creates massive flow on the bass. Titles include "Prelude", "Interlude", and a long version of "Theme From Jack Johnson". LP, Vinyl record album

Equipe/Far Out (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 29.99
A rare Brazilian album from the legendary keyboardist Deodato – recorded right around the same time as his classic CTI albums Prelude and Deodato 2 – but much more obscure! This set's got a similar electric vibe, but is much more compact – with maybe more organ than Rhodes, on tunes that are short, groovy, and very much to the point – graced with the kind of arranging genius that Eumir showed during the bossa nova years, but with a lot more soul and funk elements in the mix! The whole thing's very unique – not like any other Deodato album – and it was partly recorded in New York, with help from Phil Bodner and Romeo Penque on saxes and flute, and trumpet from Marvin Stamm. Titles include "Arranha Ceu" – a remake of his "Skyscrapers" – plus "Puma Branco", "Extremo Norte", "Menina", "O Jogo", "Flap", "Atire A 1a Pedra", and "Carlota E Carolina". LP, Vinyl record album

A lovely little disco album from the duo of Elaine & Ellen – working here with some super-soulful arrangements from producer Donald Burnside, done in an extended funky club mode that reminds us of some of the best Prelude work of the time! The vocals are ok, but the real charm is in these backings – which break out with plenty of instrumental passages, and feature a pumping mix of keys, guitar, and bass that jams nicely under a larger horn section. Duke's Big 4 here are a quartet of jazz legends – Joe Pass, Ray Brown, and Louie Bellson – all working with Duke himself to serve up unique small combo versions of older Ellington full band classics! The mix of piano, guitar, bass, and drums is a bit unusual for Ellington – and Pass especially has this sharply ringing tone that really brings a different flavor to many of the numbers – a kind of stepping, pulsating quality that's even in contrast to his other work from this period. Duke's piano augments the angularity, and titles include "Love You Madly", "Cottontail", "The Blues", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Everything But You", and "Just Squeeze Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Killer Hammond from Polish player Piotr Figiel – a player with a really wonderful sort of groove! The album's got a vibe that's halfway between the Hammond antics of Alan Hawkshaw and the freer lines of American jazzmen like Jimmy Smith or Charles Earland – augmented by other cool production touches at points, which gives the record a very groovy late 60s sort of Euro feel! The vocal group Bemibek sing these cool wordless vocals on the tune "Bit Of Spring Bit Of Summer" – and guitarist Dariusz Kozakiewicz adds a nice degree of fuzz to a few other tunes too – tripping out nicely with Piotr's very fluid lines on the Hammond! There's a bit of strings on a few numbers, bringing in a nice cinematic feel – and titles include "Prelude In E Minor", based on the same Chopin changes as Serge Gainsbourg's "Jane B" – plus "Never On Tuesday", "Breakfast At Midnight", "Away I'll Go", "Absence", and "Piece Of Space". The whole thing's a real surprise from the Polish scene of the 70s – with production that almost has some sunny Cali touches, and an approach that's different than some of the heavier, proggier work of the period. Titles include "Memorial", "A Cherry Branch", "Man For Years", "You Came From Nowhere", "Our Horoscope", and "A Little Dreaming Will Do No Harm". A well-done look at a style that would break big on the European scene of the mid 60s – the mixture of jazz performance and classical melodies – presented here in a slightly different way by some of the genre's true pioneers! Jacques Loussier recorded famous albums of Bach tunes done ala jazz, Andre Previn recorded often as a classical musician – but the work here is different than both of those modes – as the tracks are mostly jazz numbers, but handled with the kind of technical prowess that you'd hear from a classically-trained pianist – still very swinging, but with piano parts that mix melody and improvisation with some jaw-dropping command of the keyboard. The package features work from four key proponents of the scene – each represented on some less-reissued material. First up is Jacques Loussier, on titles that include "Mon Ami My Friend", "Sarabaya Johnny", "Oh Heart Of Love", "Le Chant Des Canons", and "La Fiancee Du Pirate". Next is Andre Hodier on "The Alphabet", "On A Blues", "Cross Criss", "On A Standard", "Paradoxe II", and "On A Riff". Claude Bolling serves up a few numbers – "Clair De Lune", "Back To Swing", "Prelude To A Kiss", and "Cry Me A River" – followed by Andre Previn, on titles that include "Young Man's Lament", "Blame It On My Youth", "Summertime", "A Year Of Youth", "Young & Tender", and "Love Is For The Very Young". The first side features two nine minute recordings, both beginning with melodic piano by Ra before opening up in wonderful ways. "Prelude And Shadow-Light World" is in classic cosmic jazz Arkestra mode, while "The Wind Speaks" builds with some incredible flute and strings. The other side kicks off with "We Sing This Song", led at first by some fairly straight forward group vocals, before Ra's fierce piano and some drums come in. "Outer Space Incorporated" is a grander cosmic jazz gem, building to a percussion heavy close. The short (but soaring) choral vocal, drums, bass, and piano gem "We Travel The Spaceways" is a perfect closer. LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1964. Very Good Gatefold ... $9.99
The great Lalo Schifrin plays piano and leads a crack group of studio players through some larger orchestral material with a nice jazzy feel! The overall approach is similar to Lalo's classic 60s soundtrack work – with nice solos arching out over sweeping strings and orchestral passages, and all tracks written with a good deal of punch, plus lots of little Latiny influences. Easily one of his most perfectly conceived albums of the 60s – and pretty darn tough to find. Tracks are long and titles include "El Salon Mexico", "New Fantasy", "Sabre Dance", and "Prelude #2". SF Jazz, 2015. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 35.00
There's a whole generation of jazz musicians who wouldn't have been caught dead liking the music of Michael Jackson – and then there's a huge batch of artists who grew up with MJ, and find his grooves an undeniable influence on their sound! That's definitely the case here, as this all-star group do a wonderful job of reworking classics from a few different spots in Michael's career – all given fresh arrangements by group members who include pianist Edward Simon, vibist Warren Wolf, alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon, trumpeter Sean Jones, and tenorist David Sanchez! The group throw in some of their own material too, almost taking a breather between the more familiar tunes, with some sublime songs that change up the vibe nicely. Titles include the Jackson classics "Human Nature", "The Love You Save", "Rock With You", "Smooth Criminal", "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough", and "Blame It On The Boogie" – plus the originals "Why", "Lineage", "Mr Right", "Fall Prelude", and "Grey Skies In Baltimore". Philadelphia International/Big Break (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 24.99
Five years of amazing sounds from Dexter Wansel – a keyboardist who could be as far out as his fiercest fusion contemporaries of the 70s, yet also groove with enough soulful styles to be a key part of the Philadelphia International explosion of the 70s! This massive collection really gets at all that made Wansel so great back in the day – his incredible ear for inventive arrangements, spacey way of spinning out a soul tune, and great sense of balance that never made his music sound overdone – always an effortless blend of jazz, soul, and funk – in ways that few of his contemporaries could ever hope to touch! Many of these tunes have vocals, but they also have plenty of keyboard solos too – kind of like CTI hitting a Philly groove, but one that was definitely reserved for the hipper spaces of the clubs – or the hipper clubs out there in outer space. 2CD set features great notes, sublime sound, and a killer batch of 32 tracks that includes "Life On Mars", "Disco Lights", "Let Me Rock You", "I'll Never Forget My Favorite Disco (12" version)", "The Sweetest Pain", "Holdin On", "One Million Miles From The Ground", "Rings Of Saturn", "Theme From The Planets", "Funk Attack", "Stargazer", "Ode Infinitum", "Latin Love", "Let Me Rock You", "Holdin On", "Prelude 1", "New Beginning", "Time Is The Teacher", "A Prophet Named KG", "I Just Want To Love You", "All Night Long", "It's Been Cool", "Voyager", and "Time Is Slipping Away". A wonderful little record from Frances Wayne – thanks to some great arrangements from Neal Hefti! Hefti's approach here is just perfect – not as over the top as his work with Count Basie, but with the right blend of sophistication and soulfulness to make Wayne sound great – really coming across with a lot more depth than we remember from other albums. Frances' vocals are slightly breathy at times, but never too much so – and she's got a slightly snakey quality that slides out nicely amidst small combo instrumentation from Al Cohn on tenor, Hank Jones on piano, Billy Mure on guitar, and Jerome Richardson on flute. A fantastic overview of contemporary work from the South African scene – most of it jazz-based, and brought together here as a great discovery of underground material we never would have heard otherwise! The set follows in a similar spirit to other Brownswood label explorations of the contemporary scenes in London and Havana – and like the music on those collections, there's a real genre-expanding sound going on here – plenty of jazz-based solos, but often mixed with vocals, keyboards, and a range of inventive touches – tying older South African currents with a more righteous, more expansive global vibe that's not only wonderful – but which comes off without any sort of overdone elements. A set recorded in Detroit, but one that's got a globe's worth of elements in the mix – originally recorded in the mid 80s, but not released until a brief CD issue in the early part of the 21st Century! 2 classic albums from British vocalist Georgie Fame – back to back on one CD! First up are Two Faces Of Fame – live and studio – as each side of the album was recorded in each mode! Side one features the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a live set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. Side two is even better, and features Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Tracks include a wonderful take on Mongo Santamaria's "El Pussycat", plus the tunes "Do It The Hard Way", "It Could Happen To You", "C'Est La Vie", "River's Invitation", "Greenback Dollar Bill", and "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". Third Face Of Fame is an even better album – one that has Fame moving past the swinging Mose Allison-inspired jazz vocal mode of earlier records, into a groovier style that picks up a range of different sounds! Georgie kicks off the album with his version of the ever-popular late 60s "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde" – and seems to use that tune as an excuse to explore a nice range of older jazz vocal approaches, including one tune that even has him reciting the lyrics in a Beatles-sounding monologue! Arrangements are by Harry South, with players that include Gordon Beck, John McLaughlin, Ronnie Scott, Tony Coe, and Ian Hammer – and titles include "Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde", "Ask Me Nice", "When I'm Sixty Four", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "Blue Prelude", "Bullets Laverne", "This Is Always", "Mellow Yellow", and "Side By Side". But the real highlight here is his work on bass – in that round, warm tone that he developed strongly while working on the European scene – almost a subtle wall of sound in its own right – and a unique foil for Terry's more sprightly lines on trumpet (plus a bit of flugelhorn.) Titles include "Late Date", "Jive At Five", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Lester Leaps In", "Cute", "Cottontail", and "Love You Madly". CD features alternate takes of "Cute" and "Cottontail". CD
