✨✧ David AxelrodSeriously Deep ... CD
Polygram/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ... $9.99
An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". First time ever on CD – a seminal reissue from Dusty Groove! CD

James BrownOut Of Sight ... CD
Smash/Polygram, 1964. Used ... $24.99
One of the stranger James Brown albums from the 60s! The record is one of the only vocal albums he cut for the Smash label – and it was issued during a time when James was strangely contracted to two labels – King and Smash. His dual contract situation was that he couldn't record any new original vocal material for Smash – apart from the title track "Out Of Sight", which had already been snuck on the market, and which is a sinister funky track built along the same lines as "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" (not on this album.) Apart from that track, the rest of the material on the record is more traditional R&B and pop stuff – sung by James in a strong soul style. Titles include "Somethin Else", "Nature Boy", "Maybe The Last Time", "I Wanna Be Around", "I Got You", and "Good Rockin Tonight". CD

✨✧ Gal CostaGal A Todo Vapor – Fa Tal ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1971. Used ... $28.99
An incredible live album from Gal Costa – one that's easily as great as any of her studio albums from the time! But unlike the studio albums, the style here is quite spare and intimate – a very personal presentation of Gal's music, recorded in a way that has her starting out nearly solo at the start, then adding in band members as the concert rolls on. The first portion of the performance mostly features acoustic guitar and Gal's vocals – in a style that's a bit like late 60s Nara Leao or Maria Bethania – but the second half gets more electric, often with some trippier Tropicalia touches! Titles include "Falsa Baiana", "Coracao Vagabundo", "Como 2 e 2", "Hotel Das Estrelas", "Mal Secreto", "Assum Preto", "Antonico", "Sua Estupidez", "Fruta Gogoia", and "Perola Negro". CD

Eumir Deodato, Tom Jobim, & OthersBossa Nova – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 2000. Used ... $3.99
Kind of a painful movie, but a pretty sweet soundtrack! The set features a number of new works produced by Deodato, very much in the spirit of his Inutil Paisagem 60s bossa recordings – with wonderfully complex airy melodies, and a touch so light you can't believe there's actually a conscious act behind the music. The new titles feature vocals by Barbara Mendes and Carol Rogers – and include "Samba De Uma Nota So", "Mary Ann's Theme", "Suddenly", "Soul Mates", "Amor Em Paz", and "Juan's Theme". Most of the rest of the CD features older work from Jobim's years at Verve and CTI – including the tracks "Wave", "Aguas De Marco", "Chega De Saudade", and "Inutil Paisagem". Also features a semi-painful duet between Jobim and Sting – ouch! CD

✨✧ Joao GilbertoJoao Gilberto (1973) ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1973. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
One of the most heavenly albums ever recorded – a sublime post-60s session by Joao Gilberto, one with even more fluid grace than his original bossa nova classics! The setting here is extremely spare – Joao on vocals and acoustic guitar, backed by only a slight bit of percussion – and recorded with an sound that's incredibly clear and incredibly precise – so that each gentle note, each slight rasp of the guitar comes through beautifully – as do Joao's breathily personal vocals! There's a sense of poise and presence here that Gilberto hardly matched again – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given how great most of his other records already are. The whole thing's tremendous – a true treasure, and easily one of the top classics in Brazilian music from the 70s! Titles include a landmark version of "Aguas De Marco", plus "Undiu", "Falsa Baiana", "Avarandado", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Izaura", "E Preciso Perdoar", "Valsa", and "Eu Vim Da Bahia". CD

Rita LeeBuild Up – Serie Estreia ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1970. Used ... $8.99
The first solo album by Rita Lee – cut back when she was a member of the groundbreaking Tropicalia trio, Os Mutantes! The album's got a very different feel than her work with that group – and has Rita stepping out as a sophisticated pop singer, almost in the way that Nico did on the Chelsea Girl album, after leaving the Velvet Underground. Arrangements have a weird twisted edge – as Rita makes her way through a set of originals and a few covers, in an almost deadpan, ice-blond mode that reminds us of some of Jane Birkin's early work. Arrangements are by the great Rogerio Duprat, and titles include "Sucesso, Aqui Vou Eu", "Prisioneira Do Amor", "Hulla Hulla", "Tempo Nublado", "Precisamos De Irmaos", and "Calma" – plus a nice cover of "And I Love Her". Monday MichiruChasing After The Sun/Mysteries Of Life/Inspiration/How Deep Is Your Love ... CD
Polygram (Japan), 2000. Used 2 CDs ... $7.99
Special limited 2CD version! This sparkling single is one of her best yet – with an extended groove on both sides, and a style of production and songwriting that pushers her deeper and deeper into new territory. "Mysteries Of Life" is an amazing track – one that starts with a spare jazzy passage, then moves into a house-heavy groove, but one touches with loads of acoustic instrumentation, which always works best for Monday's soulful voice. The lyrics are great, and the set's like finding some lost jazzy groover from the glory days of Fantasy Records. "Chasing After The Sun" begins with some Afro Funk rhythms, then rolls into a smooth jazzy finish that's got these killer piano riffs touched with little bits of acoustic guitar. Sounds like a classic 70s soul tune, and it's one of Monday's best. "Inspiration" finishes out the set nicely, with a strident groove, righteous lyrics, and nice acoustic guitar in the mix. Pricey – but worth it, as all tracks are great! Plus, the second CD features a remake of the Bee Gees' "How Deep is Your Love" – done with these cool strings, and a great midtempo groove that totally remakes the song into a Monday-driven jazzy groover! CD

Monday MichiruDouble Image ... CD
Polygram (Japan), 1998. New Copy ... $8.99
A real turning point for Monday Michiru – a set that has the Japanese singer moving into more complex rhythms than some of the straighter soul of her initial releases – really keeping things interesting as she stretches out lyrically too! Monday arranged and produced most of the record – although she also has help from some great guests, as was common in her early years – a lineup that includes DJ Krush, Mondo Grosso, Byron Wallen, and The Angel – all of whom add some creative energy to the project. There's a touch of drum and bass in the mix at times, but the key highlight is Monday's great sense of song and her fantastic vocals – soaring out as one of the few late 90s audiences who can take things over the top to a whole new audience. Cuts include "Reflexions", "You Make Me", "Island Of The Saints", "Method 2 The Madness", "Double Image", and "Scheme Of Things". CD

Excellent meeting between 2 mighty talents who rarely recorded together! Oliver Nelson did the arrangements and leads a big band, but the real focus is on Jimmy and Wes' solos, which are given a lot of room to roam in long tracks like "James & Wes", "Night Train", and "Down By The Riverside". Nice hard playing from Jimmy, with that great tone that he was getting in the mid 60's, and lots of very clean Hammond lines on his solos. CD

✨✧ Tamba TrioTamba Trio (1962) ... CD
Polygram (Japan), 1962. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The first-ever album from the legendary Tamba Trio – and the start of an amazing 60s run that really set them apart from other bossa combos of the time! The group hits hard right out of the box with the amazing piano of Luiz Eca and sublime vocal harmonies sung by all three members of the group – scatting along wordlessly with the tunes in a really haunting way! Drumming by Helcio Milito is incredibly tight – almost the blueprint for snapping bossa rhythms – and the whole album is produced to perfection with a sound that's dark and light at the same time. The sound is stunning, the playing is tight, and the tracks groove like nothing you could imagine! Nice overstuffed "best of" compilation that features work by Veloso that spans from his early Tropicalia years to the stuff he did as a pseudo-new wave artist in the early 80s. 7 cuts alone are from the pivotal year of 1968 – including "Shy Moon", "Lua De Sao Jorge", "Superbacana", and "Soy Loco Por Ti America" – and others are from the mid and late 70s, like "Beleza Pura", "Trilhos Urbanos", "Odara", "O Leaozinho", and "Qualquer Coisa". Not all of this material is available on the other CDs we carry, and the set itself is a great way to begin to get into the work of Veloso, who we feel is one of the greatest musical artists of the late 20th century! Guy and Young trade lines in a very nicely relaxed format, and even though the record's mostly all standards, the group works well with the material. Polygram (Brazil), 1968. Used ... $18.99
A landmark album – not just in Brazilian music, but in all modern music in general! The set's a legendary manifesto for the Tropicalia movement in Brazil – and features key works by all the leading musical luminaries in the movement – including a few later stars who are heard here at their most edgey! The work is as groundbreaking today as it was at the end of the 60s – a brilliant testament to the power of artists to really break down boundaries in art and music, and find a way to mix the political with the popular at the same time. Titles include a fantastic version of Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso singing "Baby", the "Tres Caravelas" duet between Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, Gil's great reading of "Bat Macumba" with Costa and Veloso, Nara Leao singing "Lindoneia", Os Mutantes performing "Panis Et Circenses", Gilberto on "Geleia Geral, Caetano doing "Coracao Materno, and Rita Lee, Gal Costa, and Caetano Veloso singing "Enquanto Seu Lobo Nao Vem". ✨✧ James BrownHot Pants ... CD
Polygram, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
James Brown really opens up on this early 70s classic – really showing the world the amazing groove he was crafting with his band – who were let loose to jam in the studio, spinning out some really long grooves – which were then cut down to make this sweet little record! The title cut was a big single for James at the time, but it's presented here in its full 9 minute version – a monstrous jam that's equal to anything on the Payback record, or the JBs albums too – and the album also includes the long two-part take of "Escapism", and another funky gem – "Blues & Pants", which snaps along for a solid 9 minutes too! The album's filled with heavy funk, and the longer tracks allow for plenty of instrumental flourishes from Fred, Maceo, and the other JBs – and honestly, the record is more of a People Records session than a Polydor record from James. Even more amazing – this CD reissue features the full 19 minute version of "Hot Pants" – the unedited jam from the session! CD

A bit dated, but an indisputable classic from Cameo – one that has them changing up their sound from earlier albums! The heavier funk of some of their late 70s sides is long gone, and in its place is a more stripped-down style that relies more on electric percussion and keyboards to update their sound. The best cuts on the set have that mellow crossover feel that Kool & The Gang were using at the time – smoother, slinkier soul that played well with larger audiences, yet still had a nice degree of soul. Titles include "She's Strange", "Love You Anyway", "Groove With You", "Hangin Downtown", and "Le Ve Toi". CD

A landmark session from the great Baden Powell – a record that completely transformed the sound of his music, and showed the world he had much deeper talents than just simple bossa guitar! The session was done in collaboration with poet Vinicius De Moraes, with additional vocals from Quarteto Em Cy – and the sound is a completely captivating blend of rootsy percussion, airy guitar, and poetic vocals – held together with a unique magic that was hardly ever duplicated again! There's a genius here that's hard to peg, but which is apparent from the very first note – and equal credit should possibly also be given to producer Roberto Quartin, who managed to make the whole thing happen with an echoey brilliance that's almost as important as the music itself. Titles include the original version of "Canto De Ossanha", plus "Tempo de Amor", "Tristeza E Solidao", "Lamento De Exu", "Bocoche", and "Canto De Xango". Polygram (Brazil), 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the building blocks of the late 60s Tropicalia scene in Brazil – and a standout solo debut from the young Caetano Veloso! The album's got an approach that's as dynamic and trippy as its cover image might imply – the same amazing blend of sounds and styles you'd hear on contemporaneous records by Gal Costa or Os Mutantes – served up with similar wit, wisdom, and charm! Caetano's vocals are amazing throughout – filled with raspy power that goes beyond the barriers of language – and the production has loads of surprising elements tripping through the mix – some rootsy, some slightly orchestrated – but with a softer approach that resonates strongly with more psychedelic use of organ and guitar. The album's as powerful today as it was decades ago – an essential recording that holds up beautifully year after year! The kickoff track is "Tropicalia" (surprisingly enough!), and the album is a non-stop ride through gems like "Alegria, Alegria", "Onde Andaras", "Paisagem Util", "Ave Maria", and the groovy "Soy Loco Por Ti America", written by Gilberto Gil. The songs are wonderful too – penned at a level that we haven't heard this strong since Cinema Transcendental, and with a heavenly quality that transcends language and conventional pop expectations. The format has the artists alternating songs throughout the set, then coming together for a duet at the end – and the recording quality is oddly spotty – sounding much more like a bootleg than the higher end sound you'd expect from Philips. But that quality can easily be excused given not only the historical nature of the show, but also the incredible performances by both artists – easily at their most vibrant here, and pulling out an incredible response from the crowd! Rough, but great – an essential addition to the catalog of both artists – with tunes by Caetano that include "Cinema Olympia", "Atras Do Trio Eletrico", and "Superbacana"; by Gil that include "Frevo Rasgado" and "Domingo No Parque", and a duet medley that features "Alegria, Alegria", "Hino Do Esporte Clube Bahia", and "Aquele Abraco". ✨✧ VariousJames Brown's Funky Divas ... CD
Polygram, 1960s/1970s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Totally cool compilation that brings together a huge amount of hard to find sides that feature some of the great female soul singers that have worked with James Brown over the years. The set's divided into 2 discs – one for the 60's, and one for the 70's – and includes a huge amount of stuff we almost never see, by singers like Anna King, Bea Ford, Yvonne Fair, Tammy Montgomery (Tammi Terrell), Vicki Anderson, Marva Whitney, Shirley Jean, Kay Robinson, and of course, Lyn Collins. And don't worry about already having most of this stuff, because there's a huge amount of tracks on here that you probably don't have. Plus, there's a good set of notes, with lots of details, and a whopping total of 46 cuts in all! CD

✨✧ VariousTropicalia – Ou Panis Et Circencis (180 gram pressing – with bonus CD) ... LP
Polygram/Lilith (Italy), 1968. New Copy LP & CD (reissue)... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Brian AugerGenesis ... LP
Polydor, Late 60s/1974. Near Mint- ... $9.99
US collection of work by Brian Auger from the late 60s – released on Polygram, most likely to cash in on the fame he was having with the Oblivion Express group. Not that that fame was that great, though – and frankly, we always like this stuff a lot better, as Brian's funky organ is leaner and meaner, and the R&B influences are a lot closer to the core. The record features some groovy remakes – like a wonderfully baroque-yet-funky version of "A Day In The Life", a moody version of Wes Montgomery's "Bumpin On Sunset", and a crazy 7 minute version of Donovan's "Season Of The Witch" that turns the track into a slow grooving dancefloor number! Earth & FireSong Of The Marching Children (180 gram gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Polygram/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... About March 20, 2021
Rare early 70s Dutch psych prog – early work from Earth & Fire – with some pop psychedelia learned tunes, but with a trippy, unconventional groove! The female vocals and some lighter overall sounds keep it away from the heavier or more lumbering sounds of the era, with organ, mellotron and flute in the instrumentation. Wild stuff that came out on Polygram in the Netherlands at the time! Titles include "Carnival Of The Animals". "Ebb Tide", "Storm And Thunder", "In The Mountains" and the side-long epic "Song Of The Marching Children". LP, Vinyl record album

Ron JeffersonRon Jefferson Choir (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polydor/Sam Records (France), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... About April 16, 2021
An amazing record that predates many ideas in soul jazz by a decade! Drummer Ron Jefferson was a lesser-known member of the LA bebop scene of the late 50s and early 60s, but by the time he cut this album for French Polygram in the mid 60s, he'd been to Africa, and had discovered a whole new set of musical visions – many of which are worked out in this unique trio session that features bassist Roland Haynes, guitarist Buz Saviano, and Jefferson himself on flute and drums. The music is incredibly spiritual, righteous, and free – and sounds much more like something you'd find on a hip American underground label1975, than it does a French session from the 60s – especially on side two, which features a long track that mixes more freethinking work on guitar with the kind of work on drums that should have made Jefferson a legend – very different than on his other recordings. The span of playing is amazing, and despite the seemingly familiar trio setting, the group hits a wide range of sounds as they play through a set of Jefferson's unique compositions like "Africa The Beautiful", "Every Little Bit Helps", "Fu Yu", and "The Speaker". ✨✧ VariousMove To The Groove – The Best Of 70's Jazz Funk ... CD
Verve (UK), 1995. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Although you might think this is just some cheapo major label compilation of fake funky tracks, it's actually a darn nice selection of material that spans the full range of all the Polygram related labels, and it even includes some killer unreleased tracks! Highlights include the previously unissued cut "Party Sex" by Roy Ayers, a great funky cut that ranks with his best; a rare long version of "To My Brother", one of our fave lost cuts by the JBs; "Use Me", also by the JBs, and issued only on 45; and "Monticello", a nice mellow groover by Monty Alexander, never before issued in the US! There's a total of 29 cuts on 2 CDs – with tracks that include "Superstition" and "Boatride" by Ahmad Jamal, "On Broadway" by Jess Roden, "Candido's Funk" by Candido, "Fickle Funk" by Chick Corea, "Water Torture" by Bennie Maupin, and "The Baron" by Chico Hamilton. Nice nice – and a wonderful collection of jazzy funk! CD

✨✧ Art BlakeyS Make It ... LP
Limelight, 1965. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A lost classic from Art Blakey – quite different from some of his Blue Note work! The album's a very swinging mid 60s session, noteworthy for the presence of John Gilmore, recording here in one of his few appearances away from Sun Ra. Gilmore wails on tenor, and he sounds great next to Lee Morgan, who had, at this point, briefly returned to play with Blakey, and fit in with the group beautifully. John Hicks is on piano, and contributes a few nice tracks – and Curtis Fuller rounds out the sextet nicely, hitting some of those great gutbuckety notes that he only ever seemed to manage when he worked with Blakey! The whole album's great – and tracks include "Little Hughie", "Olympia", "One For Gamal", and "Faith". LP, Vinyl record album
