David AxelrodSeriously Deep ... CD
Polygram/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ... $12.99
An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". First time ever on CD – a seminal reissue from Dusty Groove! CD

Arnaldo BaptistaLoki (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polygram/Polysom (Brazil), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A freaky little solo album by Arnaldo Baptista of Os Mutantes – a set that's every bit as wild as you might guess from the cover! The album was recorded right after the first few classics by Os Mutantes – in 1974 – and Baptista wrote all of the songs, except for one, which lists "Os Mutantes" in the credits – which is an illustration of how strongly the sound of the record is tied to that group. Unlike the vocals of the group albums, though, the tracks feature Arnaldo's booze-drenched vocals right up front – with backing by piano, and some very theatrical arrangements that are quite different than the work of his earlier Tropicalia group. The record is tough to describe – sort of a mix of early 70s Euro singer/songwriter trends, particularly those of the Saravah scene – with maybe a bit of post-psych rock, with piano as the most dominant instrument in the mix. There's a surprisingly personal feel to the whole thing – and titles include "Uma Pessoa So", "Nao Estou Nem Ai", "Desculpe", "E Facil", and "Navegar De Novo". LP, Vinyl record album

James BrownFunky Christmas ... CD
King/Polygram, Late 60s. Used ... $7.99
Excellent funky Christmas! Not everyone knows it, but James Brown cut a fair number of Christmas albums during the 60s – 3 albums, and a bunch of singles to be exact! They're all super-rare, but this great comp brings together some of the best material from those years – and nearly all the tracks are originals, with a quality level that's just as great as James' non-Christmas recordings. No kidding, The Godfather put his heart and soul into these recordings – and the stuff on here's great if you dig his King albums and singles. Titles include "Let's Unite The Whole World At Christmas", "Santa Claus Is Definitely Here To Stay", "Hey America", "Soulful Christmas", "Let's Make Christmas Mean Something This Year (parts 1 & 2)", "Go Power At Christmas Time", and the perennial fave, "Santa Claus Goes Straight To The Ghetto". 17 cuts in all! James BrownHot Pants (with bonus track) ... CD
Polygram (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $13.99
James Brown really opens up on this early 70s classic – really showing the world the amazing groove he was crafting with his band – who were let loose to jam in the studio, spinning out some really long grooves – which were then cut down to make this sweet little record! The title cut was a big single for James at the time, but it's presented here in its full 9 minute version – a monstrous jam that's equal to anything on the Payback record, or the JBs albums too – and the album also includes the long two-part take of "Escapism", and another funky gem – "Blues & Pants", which snaps along for a solid 9 minutes too! The album's filled with heavy funk, and the longer tracks allow for plenty of instrumental flourishes from Fred, Maceo, and the other JBs – and honestly, the record is more of a People Records session than a Polydor record from James. Includes a monster of a bonus track: the 19+ minute complete take of "Escape-ism". CD

CameoWord Up! ... LP
Atlanta/Polygram, 1986. Near Mint- ... $13.99
A mid-80s classic from Cameo – one that showed the world that the group was still very much in the funky music game, even if their lineup had been reduced to a trio! Larry Blackmon's still at the head of the group – singing, drumming, and playing bass throughout – with plenty of support on keyboards and a variety of instruments from an army of session players called in for the record. The style's a bit less on the heavy funk tip of earlier Cameo records, but also steps along nicely in that mellower, midtempo groove that proved to be a great refuge for funk bands as the 80s wore on – a mode that's slightly romantic at times, but always handled with a bit of bounce at the bottom. Titles include "Word Up", "Candy", "She's Mine", "Don't Be Lonely", "Back & Forth", and "You Can Have The World". LP, Vinyl record album

Even at this early point in his career, Maia had a fantastically soulful feel in his voice – steeped in influences from American soul greats of the 60s, and recorded here with some great arrangements that sound almost like they were done in the Chess studios back in the old days! The drumming is nice and funky, and Maia uses very loose and free approach to the vocals on most tracks, with less of the heavier quality of some later recordings. Amazing! Monday MichiruChasing After The Sun/Mysteries Of Life/Inspiration/How Deep Is Your Love ... CD
Polygram (Japan), 2000. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
Special limited 2CD version! This sparkling single is one of her best yet – with an extended groove on both sides, and a style of production and songwriting that pushers her deeper and deeper into new territory. "Mysteries Of Life" is an amazing track – one that starts with a spare jazzy passage, then moves into a house-heavy groove, but one touches with loads of acoustic instrumentation, which always works best for Monday's soulful voice. The lyrics are great, and the set's like finding some lost jazzy groover from the glory days of Fantasy Records. "Chasing After The Sun" begins with some Afro Funk rhythms, then rolls into a smooth jazzy finish that's got these killer piano riffs touched with little bits of acoustic guitar. Sounds like a classic 70s soul tune, and it's one of Monday's best. "Inspiration" finishes out the set nicely, with a strident groove, righteous lyrics, and nice acoustic guitar in the mix. Pricey – but worth it, as all tracks are great! Plus, the second CD features a remake of the Bee Gees' "How Deep is Your Love" – done with these cool strings, and a great midtempo groove that totally remakes the song into a Monday-driven jazzy groover! Monday MichiruDouble Image ... CD
Polygram (Japan), 1998. New Copy ... $13.99
A real turning point for Monday Michiru – a set that has the Japanese singer moving into more complex rhythms than some of the straighter soul of her initial releases – really keeping things interesting as she stretches out lyrically too! Monday arranged and produced most of the record – although she also has help from some great guests, as was common in her early years – a lineup that includes DJ Krush, Mondo Grosso, Byron Wallen, and The Angel – all of whom add some creative energy to the project. There's a touch of drum and bass in the mix at times, but the key highlight is Monday's great sense of song and her fantastic vocals – soaring out as one of the few late 90s audiences who can take things over the top to a whole new audience. Cuts include "Reflexions", "You Make Me", "Island Of The Saints", "Method 2 The Madness", "Double Image", and "Scheme Of Things". CD

Nice overstuffed "best of" compilation that features work by Veloso that spans from his early Tropicalia years to the stuff he did as a pseudo-new wave artist in the early 80s. 7 cuts alone are from the pivotal year of 1968 – including "Shy Moon", "Lua De Sao Jorge", "Superbacana", and "Soy Loco Por Ti America" – and others are from the mid and late 70s, like "Beleza Pura", "Trilhos Urbanos", "Odara", "O Leaozinho", and "Qualquer Coisa". Not all of this material is available on the other CDs we carry, and the set itself is a great way to begin to get into the work of Veloso, who we feel is one of the greatest musical artists of the late 20th century! Polygram/BGO (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of stunning early albums from The Troggs – back to back on a single CD! First up Is From Nowhere – raw rock genius from The Troggs – their debut album, in fact – a set that begins with the pivotal, pummeling "Wild Thing" – and follows with loads of killer tracks that should have been just as huge! That brittle, shrapnel-inflected guitar tone and lumbering bass groove will sound fantastic until the end of time – and as happy as Iggy Pop is to tell anyone who'll listen how important this stuff was to the early Stooges ouvre, there's ample first hand evidence here – especially in the too cool to care vocals! Titles include "Ride Your Pony", "The Kitty Cat Song", "Evil", "Jaguar And Thunderbird", "Jingle Jangle", "Our Love Will Still Be There", and "Wild Thing". Trogglodynamite is an especially fantastic set – a record that's got all this raw, rauchy, almost nasty power – proto-punk garagey rock at its best, but also very much its own animal too! The drums are jagged, the guitar lines sharp as glass, and the vocals have a sneering charm that makes even the most simple lyrical turn sound even better than it might otherwise. Titles include "Little Queenie, "Meet Jacqueline", "Oh No", "Last Summer", "It's Over", "Cousin Jane", "Let Me Tell You Babe", and "I Want You To Come Into My Life". CD

In addition to some wonderful soprano and tenor sax from Coltrane, the group also features McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – on titles that include "Lonnie's Lament", "Naima", "Impressions", "Spiritual", and "My Favorite Things". Polygram/Get On Down, 1991. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Ed OG's nice debut, with a slightly jazzy touch on the production and literate, intelligent lyrics. We really couldn't get with "Bug A Boo", but besides that, this first LP's solid from start to finish, from the days when that wasn't so uncommon. Drop the needle on this and head back in time to a day when backpacker wasn't necessarily a derogatory term, a beat wasn't a straight loop of a common sample, and rhyme skills included being able to follow the beat, which was typically at least a little bit funky. With the now classic "Be A Father To Your Child", plus standout tracks like "I'm Different", "Speak Upon It", "I Got To Have It" and "Life Of A Kid In The Ghetto". 12 tracks in all, also includes "Gotta Have Money", "Feel Like A Nut", "She Said It Was Great", "Dedicated To The Right Wingers", 'Let ME Tickle Your Fancy" and "Stop (Think For A Moment)". One of the best entries in Monday Michiru's yearly cycle of EP releases – and a sophisticated batch of jazz vocal tracks that takes her to a whole new level! Polygram/Elemental (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from Caetano Veloso – a rare all-English language set, recorded in London during the years of his exile! The post-Tropicalia set is a fair bit different than any other Veloso album we can think of – not just because of the English language, but also because the approach is somewhat gentle, and almost folksy at times – a real change from his experimental modes of the late 60s, and easily his most personal statement to date. The tunes are incredibly beautiful – filled with themes of loss and longing that no doubt come from his separation from Brazil – and although a few tunes feature light strings from Phil Ryan, most of the backings are relatively light, and almost acoustic. Titles include the classics "Shoot Me Dead", "If You Hold a Stone", "Maria Bethania", "In The Hot Sun Of A Christmas Day", and "London, London" – plus a cover of "Asa Branca". LP, Vinyl record album

Both records are great, and feature super-hip lineups that include players like Herbie Hancock, Sonny Sharrock, Joe Henderson, Reggie Workman, Charles Tolliver, and Ron Carter. These Atlantic sides are essential listening for Roy, and they're amazing little records that show a previously under-recognized side of his career. A great early demonstration of the bold talents as a leader from trumpeter Maynard Ferguson – heard here in a loose, open-ended performance that's more of a jam session than anything else! The style's almost similar to the Clifford Brown jam dates for Emarcy from the same time – two long tracks that are driven by well-crafted rhythms – and which really soar with open solo work from Ferguson on trumpet, Bud Shank on alto, Bob Cooper on tenor, and Bob Gordon on baritone. The work is nicely boppish and a fair bit more open than most of the players were getting at the time – and Maynard himself is often back a far bit to let everyone get in some good solo space! Each track lasts a side – and titles include "Night Letter" and "Somebody Loves Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Coleman Hawkins & Ben WebsterColeman Hawkins Encounters Ben Webster ... LP
Verve, 1957. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A classic set in the best Verve Records mode – as these two mature giants of the tenor sax get lots of room to open up and solo with a great rhythm section at the core! Both Hawkins and Webster have a fantastic sense of tone and timing – and the space of the record really lets you hear the charms of both in equal measure – with backing from Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Alvin Stoller on drums. The best tracks have lots of room – plenty of space so that the tenors aren't "encountering" each other in too close of quarters, with space to express themselves freely – and titles include "Blues For Yolande", "Rosita", "Shine On Harvest Moon", and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s Japanese Polygram pressing, UMV 2532, with obi and insert.)

Bud PowellPiano Interpretations By Bud Powell ... LP
Verve, 1955. Near Mint- ... $19.99
The album's way more than just a sense of "interpretations" – because with Bud Powell at the helm, everything here is remade anew! The album's possibly the most focused of Powell's mid 50s sides for Verve – George Duviver on bass and Art Taylor on drums – and features the same trio throughout, on material all recorded in a single date, which is different from other Powell albums that brought together more than one session. The rhythm is very pronounced here – with a pulse that grooves most numbers along nicely, while Bud takes plenty of left (and right) turns with his angular work on the keys of the piano. At times, there's almost a Monkish quality to some numbers – and titles include "Conception", "Willow Weep For Me", "Bean & The Boys", "Ladybird", "Stairway To The Stars", and "Willow Groove". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s Japanese Polygram pressing, UMV 2573, including the obi and insert! Cover has a cutout notch.)

A great little small group session for Dinah Washington – more jazz-based than some of her earlier or later work, sung with a small combo that includes Wynton Kelly on piano, Georgie Auld on tenor, and Herb Geller on alto. Tracks include "Look To The Rainbow", "Goodbye", "Ill Wind", "A Cottage For Sale", "Accent On Youth", and "Make Me A Present Of You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Showbiz & AGRunaway Slave ... CD
Payday/London, 1992. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary record from Show & AG – and one of the strongest full lengths of the early 90s from the DITC camp! Runaway Slave came about during the end of an era when major labels still seemed to be hungry for for dope underground MCs, so there's a gritty realness here, and on other great hip hop LPs of the early 90s that's still pretty incredible. This full length debut delivers very strongly on the Soul Clap EP – and titles include that classic track "Bounce Ta This", "Represent", "Catchin Wreck", "Fat Pockets", "40 Acres And My Props", "Hold Ya Head", "He Say, She Say", "Hard To Kill" and more. ✨✧ Lee DorseyYes We Can (180 gram green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Polydor/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Massive work by Lee Dorsey – recorded years after his classics in the 60s, and even funkier overall! Lee's really cooking on all burners here – working with the production team of Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn, and getting some incredible backing from The Meters – who are at the height of their powers during this period! In a way, the set's one of the ultimate New Orleans sessions of the 70s – a culmination of all the best elements that were percolating together in the 60s indie underground, simmered together perfectly in a tighter 70s Polygram funk mode! Includes the massive original version of "Yes We Can" – way better than any of the subsequent cover versions – plus great takes on"Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further", "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley", "Gator Tail", "Tears Tears & More Tears", "When The Bill's Paid", and "Occapella". LP, Vinyl record album
(Individually numbered, limited edition of 1000 – on 180 gram green vinyl!)
