Count BasieApril In Paris ... CD
Verve/Polygram, 1955. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of Basie's biggest albums – but still a work of pure genius! "April In Paris" is one of the darkest jazz standards ever written, and it never sounded better than in this original version, which features that great ending in which Basie and the band stop, then start, then stop – leaving you completely unresolved at the finish. The group's a strong one – with Frank Foster, Frank Wess, Freddie Green, Sonny Payne, Marshall Royal, Henry Coker, Joe Newman, and Thad Jones – and tracks include "Shiny Stockings", "Midgets", "Mambo Inn", "Sweety Cakes", and "Corner Pocket". Jorge BenJorge Ben – Serie Grandes Nomes (4CD) ... CD
Polygram/Mercury (Brazil), 1960s/Mid 70s. Used 4CD ... $19.99
Totally excellent 4CD set that brings together Jorge Ben's best work from the years 1962 to 1976. Nearly all of this stuff is unavailable elsewhere, and the set includes an insane amount of great tracks like "Chove Chuva", "Balanca Pema", "Charles, Anjo 45", "Que Pena", "Pais Tropical", "Taj Mahal", "Fio Maravilha", and sooooo much more! There's also a book with notes in English, a discography, and a nice set of photos. Very cool stuff, and well worth the high price tag. Even though this is expensive, you get 4 CDs worth of material, and it's all excellent, and all stuff you'd want by Jorge Ben. Plus, some of the albums that these came from are hard to find now – so buy it not because you'll treasure it forever! CD
(CONDITION NOTE: Disc 3 has some marks and skips on track 11, "La Vem Salgueiro" – all other songs play fine. Case has significant wear and inner booklet is detached from the spine.)

James BrownHot Pants ... CD
Polygram/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1971. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
James Brown really opens up on this early 70s classic – really showing the world the amazing groove he was crafting with his band – who were let loose to jam in the studio, spinning out some really long grooves – which were then cut down to make this sweet little record! The title cut was a big single for James at the time, but it's presented here in its full 9 minute version – a monstrous jam that's equal to anything on the Payback record, or the JBs albums too – and the album also includes the long two-part take of "Escapism", and another funky gem – "Blues & Pants", which snaps along for a solid 9 minutes too! The album's filled with heavy funk, and the longer tracks allow for plenty of instrumental flourishes from Fred, Maceo, and the other JBs – and honestly, the record is more of a People Records session than a Polydor record from James. Even more amazing – this CD reissue features the full 19 minute version of "Hot Pants" – the unedited jam from the session! CD

Polygram, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $1.99
Not to be confused with the Funk Essentials version of this title – this one's a slightly more slimmed-down set, but one that's still filled with plenty of Cameo hits! The package veers more towards some of the later 80s grooves, but is still pretty nice overall – with plenty of funky soul tracks, including "I Care For You", "Flirt", "Shake Your Pants", "She's Strange", "I Just Want To Be", "The Rock", "Feel Me", "Keep It Hot", "Be Yourself", "I'll Always Stay", and "I Like It". Eumir Deodato, Tom Jobim, & OthersBossa Nova – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 2000. Used ... $3.99
Kind of a painful movie, but a pretty sweet soundtrack! The set features a number of new works produced by Deodato, very much in the spirit of his Inutil Paisagem 60s bossa recordings – with wonderfully complex airy melodies, and a touch so light you can't believe there's actually a conscious act behind the music. The new titles feature vocals by Barbara Mendes and Carol Rogers – and include "Samba De Uma Nota So", "Mary Ann's Theme", "Suddenly", "Soul Mates", "Amor Em Paz", and "Juan's Theme". Most of the rest of the CD features older work from Jobim's years at Verve and CTI – including the tracks "Wave", "Aguas De Marco", "Chega De Saudade", and "Inutil Paisagem". Also features a semi-painful duet between Jobim and Sting – ouch! CD

Bill EvansTrio '64 ... CD
Verve/Polygram (Germany), 1964. Used ... $6.99
Bill Evans is working with a really wonderful trio here – one that features Gary Peacock on bass and Paul Motian on drums – both budding young modernists who help Evans reach some new sounds on the set! The record starts out with a groove that's perhaps more inside than you'd expect – but it then quickly moves into the sort of sensitively-played numbers that really made Evans a key force in jazz during the early 60s – supported by equally personal work from Peacock and Motian, who both clearly feel free to move beyond common piano trio cliches. Tracks include "Dancing In The Dark", "Always", "Little Lulu", "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", "Everything Happens To Me", and "For Heaven's Sake". CD

Gilberto GilCopacabana Mon Amour – Trilha Sonora Original ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1970. Used ... $6.99 9.99
An incredible bit of soundtrack work by Gilberto Gil – and one of his best albums! The record was originally recorded to accompany the work of director Rogerio Szanzerla, and it's a wonderful mix of samba, jazz, and post-Tropicalia psychedelia – all recorded in a warm intimate style that's similar to Gil's legendary London recording from 1971! The tracks are some of the most pioneering that Gil ever recorded – and they break free of the time and space constraints of some of his studio albums, stretching songs out into long open-ended explorations, 4 of which are over seven minutes long. Gil's vocals are extremely soulful, and his guitar playing is free and jazzy, often interspersed with some nice funky flute and percussion work. Titles include "Diga A Ela", "Mr. Sganzeria", "Blind Faith", "Yeh Yeh Yah Yah", and "Tomorrow Vai Ser Bacana". CD

Gilberto GilEnsaio Geral – 10 CD Box Set ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), Late 60s/1970s/1999. Used ... $389.99 449.99
Amazing! Gilberto Gil's best work has always been ignored by reissue programs for years – but now, this amazing 10 CD box set brings back all of his best recordings from the years 1967 to 1977, including a huge amount of stuff that's never been on CD before! The set's made up of 10 CDs, loosely based around specific Gil albums, and they've all got additional bonus cuts (and one CD is even a double set – and there's another bonus CD single!) There's 6 past albums by Gil – plus 4 more full albums that were never released – and a lot of other material recorded during the same time. Unlike other sets of this type, each CD is jam-packed with great stuff – including long-out of print albums, and rare B-sides and demo versions! Some CDs are also double CDs (making the set a 12 CD set actually), the book contains a bonus CD, the music is amazing, and the box must be seen to be believed – as it also comes with a totally cool hardcover book that's filled with great photos, and great overall packaging in the whole set. We know it's quite expensive, but if you've ever liked Gilberto Gil's work, this set is a must. And if you don't know his stuff – you can't get anything better than this! A treasure! CD
(Out of print. Includes book, box, and all CDs still sealed inside! Inside tray is partly cracked, and includes paper band around box, which has a few small rips, one of which has been taped. Box has light wear. With shiny reflective cover.)

Gilberto GilGilberto Gil Ao Vivo ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1974. Used ... $13.99
An excellent live set from 1974! Gilberto is playing in a fairly stripped down form, and the recording focuses mostly on his soulful singing and choppy acoustic guitar – although there is a larger group on a few tracks that plays electric guitar and keyboards, but never in a way that interferes with Gilberto's presence. The set has the same moody feeling as his rare 1971 LP on Paramount, with a stripped down sound, and lots of haunting extended tracks. The performance includes a long version of the track "Joao Sabino", plus Joao Donato's "Lugar Comum", Caetano Veloso's "Sim, Foi Voce", and the tracks "Abra O Olho" and "Heroi Das Estrelas". Great stuff, and although it's a live album, it's still one of Gilberto's best records from the 70s. CD

Gilberto GilSatisfacao – Rarities e Ineditas ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1974/1977. Used ... $11.99 14.99
A nice assortment of odds and ends from the end of Gil's years at Philips – originally put together for the fabulous Ensaio Geral box set, but issued here finally as a separate package! The material is very striking in comparison with Gil's other work of the early 70s – and shows him moving towards a much fuller sound, and a much more joyous place, emotionally. A number of tracks have instrumentation that expands on Gil's earlier hard guitar sound, with additional keyboards, percussion, and lots of studio production. Joao Donato plays some great electric piano on the cut "A Bruxa De Mentira"; Doces Barbaros join Gil on a rocking version of "Chuck Berry Fields Forever"; Nara Leao sings lovely vocals in duet with Gil on "Sarara Miolo"; and Gil fronts the funky Brazil Very Happy Band on the ironic "Brazil Very Happy Band". Other tracks include "Sala Do Som", "Tipo Africa", "Musico Simples", "E", "Ha Ha Ha", and "Ninguem Segura Este Pais". CD

Toni HarperToni ... CD
Verve/Polygram (Japan), 1955. Used ... $19.99
One of the first "adult" albums by a young Toni Harper – first known as a child sensation in the 40s, but stepping out nicely as a torchy vocalist in the 50s! The album's got a really great, really mellow Verve approach – laidback, late nite jazz instrumentation – provided by a cool combo that features Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and Alvin Stoller on drums – with lots of room for Harper to really stretch out over the top! The approach is great – nicely different from some of the tighter, fuller arrangements on some of Harper's RCA albums – and titles include "Can't We Be Friends", "A Foggy Day", "Like Someone In Love", "Love For Sale", and "Gone With the Wind". Brazilian issue of an album that was released by MCA in America, and which had (in America) a primitive painting on the cover, with the word Jobim in handwriting. Features one of the best versions of "Aqua De Marco" ever, done up in these haunting blue chords, backed by great baroque orchestrations, which descend and trail off, then come sweeping back in. The whole album's just as great, with amazing orchestrations and arrangements by Claus Ogerman, and a very deep concept behind Jobim's normally simple compositons. With the tracks "Nuvens Douradas", "Tempo Do Mar", "Ana Luiza", and "Cronica Da Casa Assassinada". CD

Rita LeeBuild Up ... LP
Polygram/Future Shock (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 28.99
The first solo album by Rita Lee – cut back when she was a member of the groundbreaking Tropicalia trio, Os Mutantes! The album's got a very different feel than her work with that group – and has Rita stepping out as a sophisticated pop singer, almost in the way that Nico did on the Chelsea Girl album, after leaving the Velvet Underground – and at a level that opens a whole new side of the singer's talents! Arrangements have a weird twisted edge – as Rita makes her way through a set of originals and a few covers, in an almost deadpan, ice-blond mode that reminds us of some of Jane Birkin's early work. Arrangements are by the great Rogerio Duprat, and titles include "Sucesso, Aqui Vou Eu", "Prisioneira Do Amor", "Hulla Hulla", "Tempo Nublado", "Precisamos De Irmaos", and "Calma" – plus a nice cover of "And I Love Him". Edu Lobo with The Tamba TrioEdu Lobo Por Edu Lobo ... CD
Elenco/Polygram (Brazil), 1965. Used ... $9.99
One of the greatest early albums from Edu Lobo – a groundbreaking set that has Lobo's vocals and guitar backed with sublime sounds from the Tamba Trio! As on their own records, the Tamba Trio harmonize wonderfully – letting Edu's vocals take the lead, but supporting him with those heavenly, airy tones that we totally love. The trio also provides instrumental backing too – a blend of bossa piano, bass, and drums – used strongly to emphasize the best moments in Lobo's compositions, in ways that hint at some of the more baroque turns his music would take in the 70s. There's a mix of ambitious sound and personal expression here that's simply breathtaking – and the album still features some of the best readings ever of Lobo tunes like "Boranda", "Reza", "Cheganca", and "Zambi". Other titles include "Em Tempo De Adues", "Cancao Do Amanhecer", "Requiem Para Amor", and "Cancao Da Terra". CD

Polygram (Brazil), 1970s/Early 80s. Used ... $4.99 6.99
A very cool 12 track sampler of the best work by Brazilian soul singer Tim Maia! If you know other Brazilian singers, expect to be surprised, because Maia's style has a lot of US soul influences in it, especially as he moves more into his modern soul work of the early 80s. The sound is certainly different than other Brazilian titles we stock, and although it's not that much like US soul music, you can certainly here how Maia's taken a lot of the influences from that music, and turned them into his own crazy style of Brazilian pop. The cuts range from early weird soul stuff to later smoother R&B – and tracks include "Primavera", "Suffocante", "Gostava Tanto De Voce", "Preciso Aprender A Ser So", "REu Confesso", and "Azul Da Cor Do Mar". Finally! Polygram has gone ahead and decided to put out a CD of the Tamba Trio's fantastic stuff from the 60's. The group – which featured pianist Luiz Eca, bassist Bebeto, and drummer Hecio Milito – was a groovy little combo that played bossa nova instrumentals with piano in the lead, and their trio of voices singing along a lot of the time. Their sound is unique, and is a heavenly mix of bossa rhythms and soaring harmonies in the best jazz vocal group tradition. This 28 track double CD set contains material from 1962 to 1968, with a motherlode of great material like "Influencia Do Jazz", "Batucada", "Tamba", "Imagem", "Mas Que Nada", "O Barquinho", and lots of other classics by composers like Jobim, Baden Powell, and Edu Lobo. The songs are wonderful too – penned at a level that we haven't heard this strong since Cinema Transcendental, and with a heavenly quality that transcends language and conventional pop expectations. Polygram (Brazil), 1969. Used ... $16.99
A seminal live set that brings together two giants of the Tropicalia scene – Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, recorded here in a rough-edged performance from 1969! The format has the artists alternating songs throughout the set, then coming together for a duet at the end – and the recording quality is oddly spotty – sounding much more like a bootleg than the higher end sound you'd expect from Philips. But that quality can easily be excused given not only the historical nature of the show, but also the incredible performances by both artists – easily at their most vibrant here, and pulling out an incredible response from the crowd! Rough, but great – an essential addition to the catalog of both artists – with tunes by Caetano that include "Cinema Olympia", "Atras Do Trio Eletrico", and "Superbacana"; by Gil that include "Frevo Rasgado" and "Domingo No Parque", and a duet medley that features "Alegria, Alegria", "Hino Do Esporte Clube Bahia", and "Aquele Abraco". An amazingly beautiful album, recorded by Vinicius De Moraes, Dorival Caymmi, Oscar Castro-Neves, and The Quarteto Em Cy for some sort of a special show. Castro-Neves provides some excellent bossa backing, the Quarteto girls sing chorus and over the top, Vinicius does some recitations, and Caymmi sings lead vocals. If the whole thing sound's a bit heavy-handed, it's not – and instead is an amazing batch of heavenly bossa-tinged tracks, with all the intelligence and imagination of the best titles on the Elenco label. The whole thing's extremely lively, and has an other-worldly sound that matches Vinicius' classic Afro Sambas LP with Baden Powell. The set's a legendary manifesto for the Tropicalia movement in Brazil – and features key works by all the leading musical luminaries in the movement – including a few later stars who are heard here at their most edgey! The work is as groundbreaking today as it was at the end of the 60s – a brilliant testament to the power of artists to really break down boundaries in art and music, and find a way to mix the political with the popular at the same time. Titles include a fantastic version of Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso singing "Baby", the "Tres Caravelas" duet between Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, Gil's great reading of "Bat Macumba" with Costa and Veloso, Nara Leao singing "Lindoneia", Os Mutantes performing "Panis Et Circenses", Gilberto on "Geleia Geral, Caetano doing "Coracao Materno, and Rita Lee, Gal Costa, and Caetano Veloso singing "Enquanto Seu Lobo Nao Vem". ✨✧ David AxelrodSeriously Deep ... CD
Polygram/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". First time ever on CD – a seminal reissue from Dusty Groove! CD

A landmark bit of bossa – one of the first albums ever recorded by Joao Donato, the Brazilian pianist whose styles would go onto influence many in the coming years! Joao's got an incredibly fluid touch on the keys – gentle but jazzy, filled with lots of warm and soulful overtones that were sometimes missing from other, cooler bossa piano players. And on top of all of that, he's got a real flair for composition – and pens some wonderful tunes for the session, like the classics "Sambou...Sambou", "Tema Teimoso", "Jodel", and "Vamos Nessa". Polygram (Brazil), 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the most heavenly albums ever recorded – a sublime post-60s session by Joao Gilberto, one with even more fluid grace than his original bossa nova classics! The setting here is extremely spare – Joao on vocals and acoustic guitar, backed by only a slight bit of percussion – and recorded with an sound that's incredibly clear and incredibly precise – so that each gentle note, each slight rasp of the guitar comes through beautifully – as do Joao's breathily personal vocals! There's a sense of poise and presence here that Gilberto hardly matched again – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given how great most of his other records already are. The whole thing's tremendous – a true treasure, and easily one of the top classics in Brazilian music from the 70s. Titles include a landmark version of "Aguas De Marco", plus "Undiu", "Falsa Baiana", "Avarandado", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Izaura", "E Preciso Perdoar", "Valsa", and "Eu Vim Da Bahia". Polygram (Brazil), 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the weirdest, wildest albums Caetano Veloso ever recorded – a highly experimental session that shows that his ties with the avant art world were still plenty strong on his return to Brazil! Despite a goofy cheeseball photo of Veloso on the cover in a bikini, the sound on this one is waaaaay out – with weird avant garde vocal bits, choppy instrumentation, and wild shifts in style that make his Tropicalia albums almost seem like pop hits! As usual, Caetano's vocals are superb, especially as he slides from experimental tunes into straighter songs – like the title cut "Araca Azul", and Milton Nascimento's "Cravo E Canela". Proof that the Brazilian intelligentsia was still alive and well in the post-Tropicalia years – with other titles that include "De Palavar Em Palavra", "Julia/Moreno", "Epico", "Viola Meu Bem", "De Conversa", and "Sugarcane Fields Forever". Polygram (Brazil), 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the building blocks of the late 60s Tropicalia scene in Brazil – and a standout solo debut from the young Caetano Veloso! The album's got an approach that's as dynamic and trippy as its cover image might imply – the same amazing blend of sounds and styles you'd hear on contemporaneous records by Gal Costa or Os Mutantes – served up with similar wit, wisdom, and charm! Caetano's vocals are amazing throughout – filled with raspy power that goes beyond the barriers of language – and the production has loads of surprising elements tripping through the mix – some rootsy, some slightly orchestrated – but with a softer approach that resonates strongly with more psychedelic use of organ and guitar. The album's as powerful today as it was decades ago – an essential recording that holds up beautifully year after year! The kickoff track is "Tropicalia" (surprisingly enough!), and the album is a non-stop ride through gems like "Alegria, Alegria", "Onde Andaras", "Paisagem Util", "Ave Maria", and the groovy "Soy Loco Por Ti America", written by Gilberto Gil. Ron JeffersonRon Jefferson Choir (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polydor/Sam Records (France), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... About October 1, 2022
An amazing record that predates many ideas in soul jazz by a decade! Drummer Ron Jefferson was a lesser-known member of the LA bebop scene of the late 50s and early 60s, but by the time he cut this album for French Polygram in the mid 60s, he'd been to Africa, and had discovered a whole new set of musical visions – many of which are worked out in this unique trio session that features bassist Roland Haynes, guitarist Buz Saviano, and Jefferson himself on flute and drums. The music is incredibly spiritual, righteous, and free – and sounds much more like something you'd find on a hip American underground label1975, than it does a French session from the 60s – especially on side two, which features a long track that mixes more freethinking work on guitar with the kind of work on drums that should have made Jefferson a legend – very different than on his other recordings. The span of playing is amazing, and despite the seemingly familiar trio setting, the group hits a wide range of sounds as they play through a set of Jefferson's unique compositions like "Africa The Beautiful", "Every Little Bit Helps", "Fu Yu", and "The Speaker". Two different sides of Verve Records in the 50s – one modern, one a bit more traditional – and both represented in live material from the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957! Side one features a stunning live performance from pianist Teddy Wilson – working in a tight trio with Milt Hinton on bass and Spec Powell on drums – and really blowing away any conceptions we might have had about Wilson being aging or flowery at the time. Instead, he's got a sharp edge and command of the keys that's amazing – and which almost seems to have a bit more bite than usual in this concert setting. Titles include "Stompin At The Savoy", "Basin Street Blues", and "Airmail Special" – and Gerry Mulligan joins the group on baritone for a reading of "Sweet Georgia Brown". Mulligan then takes off with his own group, in a completely different format – no piano at all, just beautiful work from Joe Benjamin on bass and Dave Bailey on drums – and sublime sounds from Bob Brookmeyer's valve trombone, which is a perfect match for Gerry's deep tones. The group plays long takes on "My Funny Valentine" and "Utter Chaos". LP, Vinyl record album

Not that that fame was that great, though – and frankly, we always like this stuff a lot better, as Brian's funky organ is leaner and meaner, and the R&B influences are a lot closer to the core. The record features some groovy remakes – like a wonderfully baroque-yet-funky version of "A Day In The Life", a moody version of Wes Montgomery's "Bumpin On Sunset", and a crazy 7 minute version of Donovan's "Season Of The Witch" that turns the track into a slow grooving dancefloor number! A nice little Verve session that breaks from the usual format – especially the "Songbooks" one – and features Ella in LA with small group backing by Jim Hall, Lou Levy, Wilfred Middlebrooks, and Gus Johnson. The set was recorded live at the Crescendo – in a jazzily swinging mode that's a bit looser than some of Ella's other Verve sessions, but which still demonstrates some nice control on the vocals. Titles include "Mr Paganini", "Stairway To The Stars", "Air Mail Special", "Blue Moon", "This Could Be The Start Of Something Big", and "Just In Time". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s Japanese Polygram pressing, UMV 2636.)

Deram (UK), 1997. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The fab Karminsky Brothers follow up their first great selection of groovy and easy tunes from the vaults of Polygram with this excellent second set that includes wonderful stuff that's every bit as great as the first one! Like the first volume, this one's got some great bits from the UK and Euro albums of the 60s – which we never come across over here at all. Titles include "Yellow World" by J Girls, "Soul House" by Max Gregor, "Sort Of Soul" by Birds & Brass, "Brass N Ivory" by Tony Osborne, "Baby Let's Dance Together" by Kittu, "Teenie Weenie Boppie" by France Gall, "Soul Lady" by Don Sebesky, and lots lots more. Very groovy looking, and thoroughly satisfying all the way through, with mostly cuts you can't find anywhere else! 20 great tracks! CD

✨✧ Roy AyersChange Up The Groove ... LP
Polydor, 1974. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A great little album from Roy Ayers' early years with Polygram – often overlooked amidst some of the bigger records in the catalog, but a very soulful set that's got some wonderful funky numbers! There's a really jazzy feel going on here – Roy's nod back to his older roots in music, touched with some of the sharper styles of the 70s generations – especially in the rhythms, which are starting to have that snapping sound that was the Ayers trademark in the 70s. Vibes ring out wonderfully throughout – often getting more space than vocals – and other instrumentation includes soprano sax from George Braith, keyboards from Harry Whitaker and Leon Pendarvis, and drums from Bernard Purdie. Bits of strings slide in nicely, showing a deeper sound to Roy's arranging skills – and titles include the funky break classic "The Boogie Back", a sweet reading of "Feel Like Makin' Love", with all the right electric effects to get the best out of the song's mellow righteous vibe – and the great cuts "Fishika", "Sensitize", "Don't You Worry Bout A Thing", "When is Real Real?", and "Change Up The Groove". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing with Sterling stamp/RL etch. Cover has a torn cutout notch at the top left, mostly split top seam, split spine, wear and aging, and a name in pen on both sides. Labels have some pen.)

✨✧ City LimitsCircles ... LP
Philadelphia International, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Not one of the most famous groups on the Philly scene – but a great one! The band's got a two-male/two-female harmony sound, with some nice jazzy inflections that remind us of similarly-structured groups, like Side Effect and Creative Source during their Polygram years. The album's got a great modern soul sound, with some sophisticated arrangements by Bruce Hawes and Norman Harris that are in a perfect late Philly mode. Cuts include "Love Is Real", "Uncle James", "Circles", "Words Without Love", "People (We Need A Change)", and "Love Is Everywhere". LP, Vinyl record album
(Promo. Cover has a tracklist sticker, ring and edge wear, a name in pen, and a few light stains. Labels have a name in pen.)

✨✧ Dinah WashingtonIn The Land Of Hi Fi ... LP
EmArcy, Mid 50s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The Hi Fi in the title might imply that there's a bit more going on here arrangement-wise than on some of Dinah's other albums – but the scoring by Hal Mooney is still pretty straight, in a sophisticated jazzy mode that works best with the vocals, and which never overwhelms the singing for sake of some silly instrumental flourishes. Junior Mance plays piano with the group, and titles include "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "My Ideal", "Nothing Ever Changes My Love For You", "If I Were A Bell", "Say It Isn't So", and "What'll I Tell My Heart". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MomentsBaby, Let's Rap Now (parts 1 & 2) ... 12-inch
Sugar Hill, 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Believe it or not, the track's a nice midtempo modern soul groover from The Moments – even though it's recorded after Ray, Goodman, and Brown left for Polygram, and Sugar Hill was holding onto the name with a different set of singers. The cut's got a beautiful sweet modern sound, and a sound that almost feels like the Ray, Goodman, Brown stuff for Polygram. 12-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Sugar Hill sleeve.)
