✨✧ David AxelrodSeriously Deep ... CD
Polygram/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ... $9.99
An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". First time ever on CD – a seminal reissue from Dusty Groove! CD

Archetypal heavy rock from Blue Cheer – one of THE underground classics of the late 60s! Guitars are firmly, very jammingly in force – and the set's produced to perfection by the legendary Abe "Voco" Kesh. Powerful, fuzzed out, blues based fire at it's most forceful and exhilarating – ultimately setting the bar too high for the group, or altered versions of it, to ever again approach! Polygram/Universal (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $13.99
It's the early 80s, and Gal's working with a style that's sure a lot sweeter and slicker than her earlier albums – but her voice is still fantastic, and we can't help liking the catchy tunes on the album, which are produced in a style that's similar to some of the modern soul-oriented work that Marcos Valle was doing around the same time. There's a lot of electric keyboards and percussion, but Gal's voice is still out front, singing in a lovely touching manner. Includes a nice remake of the classic "Baby" performed with backing vocals by Roupa Nova, plus the tracks "Ruma Louca", "Olhos Do Coracoa", "Mil Perdoes", "Sutis Diferencas", "Grande Final" and "Sim Ou Nao". One of the most mindblowing albums ever recorded – anywhere, anytime! This 1969 set stands as one of the greatest records ever cut by Gal Costa – done at the height of the Tropicalia movement, and featuring a sublime mix of styles that really gets the spirit of the movement right. Arrangements are by the legendary Rogerio Duprat – who effortlessly shifts the backings between stark electronics, sweet bossa, gliding strings, jazzy piano, and baroque orchestrations that dance around with a surprising amount of grooves! Tunes include some classics by Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, and Gilberto Gil – served up in amazing new versions by Gal and Duprat! Joao GilbertoJoao Gilberto (1973) ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1973. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
One of the most heavenly albums ever recorded – a sublime post-60s session by Joao Gilberto, one with even more fluid grace than his original bossa nova classics! The setting here is extremely spare – Joao on vocals and acoustic guitar, backed by only a slight bit of percussion – and recorded with an sound that's incredibly clear and incredibly precise – so that each gentle note, each slight rasp of the guitar comes through beautifully – as do Joao's breathily personal vocals! There's a sense of poise and presence here that Gilberto hardly matched again – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given how great most of his other records already are. The whole thing's tremendous – a true treasure, and easily one of the top classics in Brazilian music from the 70s! Titles include a landmark version of "Aguas De Marco", plus "Undiu", "Falsa Baiana", "Avarandado", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Izaura", "E Preciso Perdoar", "Valsa", and "Eu Vim Da Bahia". CD

Verve/Polygram (Japan), 1956. Used ... $14.99
Possibly one of the most essential Billie Holiday albums for Verve – a set that carries the same title as her famous autobiography, and which also features many key numbers from her songbook at the time! The feel here is quite easygoing and relaxed – with small group backing behind Billie's vocals, which themselves are recorded cleanly and clearly throughout. One side features backing by a combo that includes Wynton Kelly on piano, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Charlie Shavers on trumpet, and Paul Quinichette on tenor – and the other features a group that includes Bobby Tucker on piano, Charlie Shavers on trumpet, Barney Kessel on guitar, and the great Willie Smith on alto sax. ✨✧ Charles MingusMingus Revisited (aka Pre-Bird) ... CD
EmArcy/Polygram (Germany), 1960. Used ... $4.99
An unusual chapter in the label-hopping career of Charles Mingus – a one-off date recorded for Mercury right after Mingus' legendary sessions for Columbia! The format here may well be Mingus' most ambitious to date – as the album features larger groups than before, exploring a range of musical ideas that run from Charles' own highly political expressions of the Civil Rights era to some of his landmark explorations of Duke Ellington! As always, the individual players in the group are given a strong voice in the proceedings – and the record bristles with energy from solos by Ted Curson, Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Jimmy Knepper, Yusef Lateef, and a young Joe Farrell – as well as vocal performances by Lorraine Cousins, who sings on the classic "Weird Nightmare" and the haunting "Eclipse". A tremendous record throughout – filled with life, imagination, and boundless creativity – with titles that include "Mingus Fingus no. 2", "Weird Nightmare", "Eclipse", "Bemoanable Lady", "Half Mast Inhibition", and "Prayer for Passive Resistance". After beginning life as a super fuzzed-out psychasouladelic band, Parliament emerged as one of the best pop-funk combos of the mid/late 70s – with a tight tight sound that mixed the smooth major label sound of Casablanca with the mad funk genius of George Clinton. This huge 3LP set brings together some of the band's best tracks from their glory years of the late 70s – when they were hitting the charts and selling a huge amount of albums to college kids stoned out of their mind waiting for the mothership to land. Tracks include "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)", "Mothership Connection (Star Child)", "Testify", "Mr. Wiggles", "Bop Gun", "Up For The Down Stroke", "Theme From The Black Hole", "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)", "Flashlight", "Ride On", "Rumpofsteelskin", "Agony Of Defeet", and "Children Of Production". 25 tracksin all! Livingston Taylor's not hiding his relation to brother James Taylor here – at least not in his style, which is strongly Taylor-like, but not nearly as filled with cliche! The songs are short, simple, and nicely personal – a bit folksy at moments, and at their best when sung with some jazzier phrasing on acoustic guitar. Liv's voice has a nicely light feel – beautifully lilting across the top of the tunes – and titles include "Hush A Bye", "Sit On Back", "Doctor Man", "Thank You Song", "Good Friends", and "Carolina Day". Caetano VelosoAraca Azul ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1972. Used ... $13.99
One of the weirdest, wildest albums Caetano Veloso ever recorded – a highly experimental session that shows that his ties with the avant art world were still plenty strong on his return to Brazil! Despite a goofy cheeseball photo of Veloso on the cover in a bikini, the sound on this one is waaaaay out – with weird avant garde vocal bits, choppy instrumentation, and wild shifts in style that make his Tropicalia albums almost seem like pop hits! As usual, Caetano's vocals are superb, especially as he slides from experimental tunes into straighter songs – like the title cut "Araca Azul", and Milton Nascimento's "Cravo E Canela". Proof that the Brazilian intelligentsia was still alive and well in the post-Tropicalia years – with other titles that include "De Palavar Em Palavra", "Julia/Moreno", "Epico", "Viola Meu Bem", "De Conversa", and "Sugarcane Fields Forever". A great 90s album by Caetano Veloso – a beautiful re-awakening of his genius in the later years of his career! The sound here is as fresh, creative, and personal as on some of Veloso's best post-Tropicalia albums of the 70s – served up in a blend of spare percussion, edgey guitars, and inventive production techniques that are as simple and powerful as Veloso's wonderful vocals on the set. The songs are wonderful too – penned at a level that we haven't heard this strong since Cinema Transcendental, and with a heavenly quality that transcends language and conventional pop expectations. Titles include "Livros", "How Beautiful Could A Being Be", "Pra Ninguem", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", and "Manhata". CD

Caetano Veloso & Gilberto GilBarra 69 ... CD
Polygram/Universal (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99
A seminal live set that brings together two giants of the Tropicalia scene – Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, recorded here in a rough-edged performance from 1969! The format has the artists alternating songs throughout the set, then coming together for a duet at the end – and the recording quality is oddly spotty – sounding much more like a bootleg than the higher end sound you'd expect from Philips. But that quality can easily be excused given not only the historical nature of the show, but also the incredible performances by both artists – easily at their most vibrant here, and pulling out an incredible response from the crowd! Rough, but great – an essential addition to the catalog of both artists – with tunes by Caetano that include "Cinema Olympia", "Atras Do Trio Eletrico", and "Superbacana"; by Gil that include "Frevo Rasgado" and "Domingo No Parque", and a duet medley that features "Alegria, Alegria", "Hino Do Esporte Clube Bahia", and "Aquele Abraco". ✨✧ Arnaldo BaptistaLoki ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A freaky little solo album by Arnaldo Baptista of Os Mutantes – a set that's every bit as wild as you might guess from the cover! The album was recorded right after the first few classics by Os Mutantes – in 1974 – and Baptista wrote all of the songs, except for one, which lists "Os Mutantes" in the credits – which is an illustration of how strongly the sound of the record is tied to that group. Unlike the vocals of the group albums, though, the tracks feature Arnaldo's booze-drenched vocals right up front – with backing by piano, and some very theatrical arrangements that are quite different than the work of his earlier Tropicalia group. The record is tough to describe – sort of a mix of early 70s Euro singer/songwriter trends, particularly those of the Saravah scene – with maybe a bit of post-psych rock, with piano as the most dominant instrument in the mix. There's a surprisingly personal feel to the whole thing – and titles include "Uma Pessoa So", "Nao Estou Nem Ai", "Desculpe", "E Facil", and "Navegar De Novo". CD

Oscar Peterson's trio is augmented here by a famous guest – trumpeter Clark Terry, whose horn adds a nice bit of punctuation to the set, and makes the record a strong standout in the 60s catalogs of both players! The addition of Terry to the record is a great one – as Clark's rising fame at the time merges nicely with the popularity of the Peterson group – and since both players share a talent for mixing earthy moments with tighter playing, the whole thing comes off pretty darn nicely! Peterson's piano is supported by rhythm work from Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums – and Terry not only plays trumpet and flugelhorn, but also vocalizes a slight bit too – sometimes at the same point he's playing his horn! A mid-80s classic from Cameo – one that showed the world that the group was still very much in the funky music game, even if their lineup had been reduced to a trio! Larry Blackmon's still at the head of the group – singing, drumming, and playing bass throughout – with plenty of support on keyboards and a variety of instruments from an army of session players called in for the record. The style's a bit less on the heavy funk tip of earlier Cameo records, but also steps along nicely in that mellower, midtempo groove that proved to be a great refuge for funk bands as the 80s wore on – a mode that's slightly romantic at times, but always handled with a bit of bounce at the bottom. Although not as familiar in the US as other Brazilian artists of the time, Os Cariocas were perhaps the leading vocal group of the early bossa years, and their albums were all great jazzy interpretations of bossa material, done in the same sort of 4-part male harmony perfected by the Hi-Lo's and Four Freshmen. This Brazilian CD is a reissue of the group's legendary album from 1963, and it's got a dozen tracks that are all very nice bossa groovers, sung in a tight harmony vocal style. Count BasieHigh Voltage ... LP
MPS, 1970. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Late niceness from Count Basie – and a set that definitely lives up to its name – a really high energy set, and one of the few times that Basie ever recorded for the MPS label! The group here works with sharp arrangements from Chico O'Farrill – who's got that punchy groove he was really perfecting in the 60s – a rhythmic snap that works just as well with the Basie group as Neal Hefti's charts did a decade before! Tunes are mostly standards, served up in a no-nonsense mode that's very heavy on the overall rhythmic conception of the group – but with some nice breakout solo moments, too – as you might hope for with a group that includes Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor, Eric Dixon on flute and tenor, Joe Newman on trumpet, Jerry Dodgion on alto, and Buddy Morrow on trombone. Titles include "Together", "If I Were A Bell", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Chicago", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "Day In Day Out", and "When Sunny Gets Blue". LP, Vinyl record album
(Polygram reissue in a barcode cover, with some marks and remnants from price sticker removal on front.)

Stan Getz, Wardell Gray, Buddy DeFrancoJam Session #4 ... LP
Verve, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Classic Jam Session work from Norman Granz – featuring a group with Stan Getz, Harry Edison, Wardell Gray, Benny Carter, Willie Smith, Buddy De Franco, Count Basie, and Freddie Green – on two long tracks, "Oh Lady Be Good" and "Blues For The Count". The session's got a number of interesting aspects – Basie plays organ, Getz is a bit harder than usual, and Willie Smith sounds great, as always, in one of his rare appearances from the time. LP, Vinyl record album
(80s mono Japanese Polygram pressing, UMV 2518, with obi and insert.)

Dinah WashingtonDinah (Emarcy) ... LP

A great little small group session for Dinah Washington – more jazz-based than some of her earlier or later work, sung with a small combo that includes Wynton Kelly on piano, Georgie Auld on tenor, and Herb Geller on alto. Tracks include "Look To The Rainbow", "Goodbye", "Ill Wind", "A Cottage For Sale", "Accent On Youth", and "Make Me A Present Of You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Count BasieApril In Paris ... LP
Verve, 1955. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Basie's biggest albums – but still a work of pure genius! "April In Paris" is one of the darkest jazz standards ever written, and it never sounded better than in this original version, which features that great ending in which Basie and the band stop, then start, then stop – leaving you completely unresolved at the finish. The group's a strong one – with Frank Foster, Frank Wess, Freddie Green, Sonny Payne, Marshall Royal, Henry Coker, Joe Newman, and Thad Jones – and tracks include "Shiny Stockings", "Midgets", "Mambo Inn", "Sweety Cakes", and "Corner Pocket". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s mono Japanese Polygram pressing, UMV 2641. Cover has a half split spine and a light mark from sticker removal on front.)

✨✧ Edwin BirdsongWhat It Is ... LP
Polydor, 1972. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Wild weird stuff from Edwin Birdsong – an artist who's best known for his work with Roy Ayers during the 70s. This effort's got a very similar righteous soul sound to some of Roy's early work for Polygram – with a mix of jazz, soul, funk, and lots of cosmic wisdom – although Edwin also lets his politics get in the groove a bit more strongly, in a manner that's similar to Eugene McDaniels. Includes the spacey club classic "Pretty Brown Skin" – a wonderfully off-beat groover that sounds like it could be a Roy Ayers tune. Other tracks include the bizarre "It Ain't No Fun Being A Welfare Recipient", plus "The Spirit Of Do", "The Uncle Tom Game", and "Mongoose". LP, Vinyl record album
(Nice original pressing – with insert! Cover has a cutout mark, but is nice too.)

✨✧ VariousIn Flight Entertainment – 19 New Ways To Fly Around The World Of Easy Listening ... CD
Deram (UK), 1996. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This great comp came out a few years ago, but has sort of fallen through the cracks in recent years. Don't miss it, though, because it's a great batch of groovy and easy tracks, put together by the fab Karminsky Brothers, and including a huge amount of great cuts from the Polygram back catalog that we never see on wax. The set's especially good in British and European easy tracks, and includes titles like "Let The Love Come Through" by Roland Shaw, "Di Gue Ding Ding" by Michel Legrand, "Paramaribo" by John Schroeder, "Blues A Go Go" by Lalo Schifrin, "Catwalk" by Pete Moore, "They Call Me Mr. Tibbs" by Chaquito Big Band, "Discotheque" by Augusto Alguero, and lots lots more! Very groovy, very nicely packaged, and an excellent selection of rare tunes with a great easy feel! CD
(Out of print.)
