Bee Gees, Tavares, Yvonne Elliman, & OthersSaturday Night Fever ... CD
Polygram, 1977. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
Yes, it was a mega-hit – and yes, it was one of those records that everyone who lived through the 70s seemed to own at one time – but after all these decades, you can't deny the power of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack – especially for the way that it mixed club soul classics with new original material! Obviously, the Bee Gees cover placement make them big stars of the record – but the set's also got some great early disco gems – like "Open Sesame" by Kool & The Gang, "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps, "KJEE" by MFSB, "Calypso Breakdown" by Ralph MacDonald, "Fifth Of Beethoven" by Walter Murphy, "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman, "Boogie Shoes" by KC & The Sunshine Band, and "More Than A Woman" by Tavares. The Bee Gees reinvent themselves from the early days – and sing "Stayin Alive", "How Deep Is Your Love", "More Than A Woman", "Jive Talkin", "You Should Be Dancin", and "Night Fever" – and the set also features a few instrumentals by David Shire – "Manhattan Skyline", "Night On Disco Mountain" and "Salsation". Georges BrassensLe Pornographe ... CD
Philips/Polygram (France), 1960/1988. Used ... $4.99
Beautiful CD that brings together 20 tracks of the fragile French folk songwriting of the great Georges Brassens. If you don't know Brassens, he was one twisted mofo, and his work has gone onto provide the inspiration for a range of musicians that runs from Serge Gainsbourg to Momus. This set's got some of his racier stuff, including classics like "Le Pornographe", "Le Coco (Cuckold)", "La Traitresse", and "Comme Une Soeur". Very spooky spare sound, and lots of haunting vocals accompanied by spare guitar! CD

James BrownHot Pants ... CD
Polygram, 1971. Used ... $9.99
James Brown really opens up on this early 70s classic – really showing the world the amazing groove he was crafting with his band – who were let loose to jam in the studio, spinning out some really long grooves – which were then cut down to make this sweet little record! The title cut was a big single for James at the time, but it's presented here in its full 9 minute version – a monstrous jam that's equal to anything on the Payback record, or the JBs albums too – and the album also includes the long two-part take of "Escapism", and another funky gem – "Blues & Pants", which snaps along for a solid 9 minutes too! The album's filled with heavy funk, and the longer tracks allow for plenty of instrumental flourishes from Fred, Maceo, and the other JBs – and honestly, the record is more of a People Records session than a Polydor record from James. Even more amazing – this CD reissue features the full 19 minute version of "Hot Pants" – the unedited jam from the session! CD

James BrownOut Of Sight ... CD
Smash/Polygram, 1964. Used ... $32.99
One of the stranger James Brown albums from the 60s! The record is one of the only vocal albums he cut for the Smash label – and it was issued during a time when James was strangely contracted to two labels – King and Smash. His dual contract situation was that he couldn't record any new original vocal material for Smash – apart from the title track "Out Of Sight", which had already been snuck on the market, and which is a sinister funky track built along the same lines as "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" (not on this album.) Apart from that track, the rest of the material on the record is more traditional R&B and pop stuff – sung by James in a strong soul style. Titles include "Somethin Else", "Nature Boy", "Maybe The Last Time", "I Wanna Be Around", "I Got You", and "Good Rockin Tonight". CD

✨✧ CameoWord Up! ... LP
Atlanta/Polygram, 1986. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A mid-80s classic from Cameo – one that showed the world that the group was still very much in the funky music game, even if their lineup had been reduced to a trio! Larry Blackmon's still at the head of the group – singing, drumming, and playing bass throughout – with plenty of support on keyboards and a variety of instruments from an army of session players called in for the record. The style's a bit less on the heavy funk tip of earlier Cameo records, but also steps along nicely in that mellower, midtempo groove that proved to be a great refuge for funk bands as the 80s wore on – a mode that's slightly romantic at times, but always handled with a bit of bounce at the bottom. Titles include "Word Up", "Candy", "She's Mine", "Don't Be Lonely", "Back & Forth", and "You Can Have The World". LP, Vinyl record album

Joao GilbertoJoao Gilberto (1973) ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1973. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
One of the most heavenly albums ever recorded – a sublime post-60s session by Joao Gilberto, one with even more fluid grace than his original bossa nova classics! The setting here is extremely spare – Joao on vocals and acoustic guitar, backed by only a slight bit of percussion – and recorded with an sound that's incredibly clear and incredibly precise – so that each gentle note, each slight rasp of the guitar comes through beautifully – as do Joao's breathily personal vocals! There's a sense of poise and presence here that Gilberto hardly matched again – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given how great most of his other records already are. The whole thing's tremendous – a true treasure, and easily one of the top classics in Brazilian music from the 70s! Titles include a landmark version of "Aguas De Marco", plus "Undiu", "Falsa Baiana", "Avarandado", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Izaura", "E Preciso Perdoar", "Valsa", and "Eu Vim Da Bahia". CD

Kool & The GangIn The Heart ... CD
Polygram/Mercury, 1983. Used ... $8.99
A sweet set that's part of a big early 80s run from Kool & The Gang – a time that saw the funk legends really hitting the mainstream, and winning over a huge new audience in the process! Given that the Gang virtually invented ensemble funk at the start of the 70s, they're perfectly poised here to move into modes that so many of their younger competition were trying – but never did so well – that blend of 80s elements and more sharply-fused funk instrumentation, all honed down into a tightly snapping groove. The real surprise, though, is the group's growing ability for ballads – which put records like this into hands of folks who never would have dug their funk a few years before. And while we might have had a few problems with that shift at the time, the passage of years has got the whole thing sounding pretty darn great to our ears – especially in comparison to so much weaker work from the time. Titles include "In The Heart", "Joanna", "Tonight", "Straight Ahead", "September Love", "You Can Do It", and "Home Is Where The Heart Is". CD

Polygram/Oficial Arquivos, 1972. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing early effort from Brazilian soul hero Tim Maia – one of his greatest ever! Even at this early point in his career, Maia had a fantastically soulful feel in his voice – steeped in influences from American soul greats of the 60s, and recorded here with some great arrangements that sound almost like they were done in the Chess studios back in the old days! The drumming is nice and funky, and Maia uses very loose and free approach to the vocals on most tracks, with less of the heavier quality of some later recordings. Amazing! Titles include "My Little Girl", "Idade", "Canario Do Reino", "Lamento", "Razao De Sambar", and "Ja Era Tempo De Voce". CD

Monday MichiruDouble Image ... CD
Polygram (Japan), 1998. New Copy ... $8.99
A real turning point for Monday Michiru – a set that has the Japanese singer moving into more complex rhythms than some of the straighter soul of her initial releases – really keeping things interesting as she stretches out lyrically too! Monday arranged and produced most of the record – although she also has help from some great guests, as was common in her early years – a lineup that includes DJ Krush, Mondo Grosso, Byron Wallen, and The Angel – all of whom add some creative energy to the project. There's a touch of drum and bass in the mix at times, but the key highlight is Monday's great sense of song and her fantastic vocals – soaring out as one of the few late 90s audiences who can take things over the top to a whole new audience. Cuts include "Reflexions", "You Make Me", "Island Of The Saints", "Method 2 The Madness", "Double Image", and "Scheme Of Things". CD

Caetano VelosoCaetano Veloso (1971) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polygram/Elemental (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
One of the greatest albums ever from Caetano Veloso – a rare all-English language set, recorded in London during the years of his exile! The post-Tropicalia set is a fair bit different than any other Veloso album we can think of – not just because of the English language, but also because the approach is somewhat gentle, and almost folksy at times – a real change from his experimental modes of the late 60s, and easily his most personal statement to date. The tunes are incredibly beautiful – filled with themes of loss and longing that no doubt come from his separation from Brazil – and although a few tunes feature light strings from Phil Ryan, most of the backings are relatively light, and almost acoustic. Titles include the classics "Shoot Me Dead", "If You Hold a Stone", "Maria Bethania", "In The Hot Sun Of A Christmas Day", and "London, London" – plus a cover of "Asa Branca". LP, Vinyl record album

A great 90s album by Caetano Veloso – a beautiful re-awakening of his genius in the later years of his career! The sound here is as fresh, creative, and personal as on some of Veloso's best post-Tropicalia albums of the 70s – served up in a blend of spare percussion, edgey guitars, and inventive production techniques that are as simple and powerful as Veloso's wonderful vocals on the set. The songs are wonderful too – penned at a level that we haven't heard this strong since Cinema Transcendental, and with a heavenly quality that transcends language and conventional pop expectations. Nice overstuffed "best of" compilation that features work by Veloso that spans from his early Tropicalia years to the stuff he did as a pseudo-new wave artist in the early 80s. 7 cuts alone are from the pivotal year of 1968 – including "Shy Moon", "Lua De Sao Jorge", "Superbacana", and "Soy Loco Por Ti America" – and others are from the mid and late 70s, like "Beleza Pura", "Trilhos Urbanos", "Odara", "O Leaozinho", and "Qualquer Coisa". Not all of this material is available on the other CDs we carry, and the set itself is a great way to begin to get into the work of Veloso, who we feel is one of the greatest musical artists of the late 20th century! A full set of Louis Jordan's excellent work for Mercury Records in the mid 50s – material that often reworks his older songs, but with a lean, mean vibe that's got a lot more early rock and R&B touches! The instrumentation is razor-sharp – often with searing sax solos from the man himself, and a groove that has all the other players hitting hard on the rhythms – romping in a way that definitely lives up to the rock and roll of the title, but with a quality that reminds us that Jordan was one of the originators, and not just some older talent trying to cash in on the new scene! CD features 21 tracks in all – and titles include "Run Joe", "Salt Pork West Virginia", "Beware Brother Beware", "Knock Me A Kiss", "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens", "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying", "The Jamp", "Ella Mae", "Saturday Night Fish Fry", and "Morning Light". Talkin' Loud/Polygram, 1991. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest soul albums of the past 20 years – an instant classic the day it was released! When this killer came out in the UK in 1991, it was one of the best soul records we'd heard in years. Carleen Anderson, the then-unknown daughter of Bobby Byrd & Vicki Anderson, sung some of the deepest vocals we'd heard in years – and she was backed by funky soundscapes filled with references and homages to greats like Roy Ayers, Leroy Hutson, Leon Ware, 24-Carat Black, and many others – all now well-remembered artists from the rare groove years of the 70s, but at the time just barely-remembered echoes from the past who were being kept alive in the British soul scene. The record was (and is) impeccable – a wondrous treat for fans of the kind of rare groove material we stock at Dusty Groove – and it features stellar performances by the likes of Carleen Anderson, Master Ace, Johnny Lytle, Maceo Parker, and others! This US version features a few remixes from the original UK album – and titles include "All I Have (Young Ideas mix)", "Funky Yeh Funki (Mek It)", "Talkin What I Feel", "Move On", "Apparently Nothin (Soul River)", "Get Yourself Together (parts 1 & 2)", "Freedom Suite", "Step Right On (original mix)", and "As We Come (To Be)". ✨✧ Hermeto PascoalMusica Livre De Hermeto Pascoal ... CD
Verve/Polygram, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
Quite possibly the clearest moment of genius ever from the legendary Hermeto Pascoal – a tremendous album that helped reshape instrumental Brazilian music for many years to come! At one level, the record shares a sound with some of the fuller, richer orchestrations going on in the post-bossa years – especially the work of Edu Lobo and Marcos Valle – but at another, it's filled with the kind of inventive instrumental interplay that's always made Hermeto so great, but which has never come off so perfectly as it does here! As you might expect from Pascoal, there's some especially great reed passages – crafted in a flurry of colors and tones – but there's also a warmer, more flowing quality to the whole album – less of the dark notes and pointy edges that show up often in Hermeto's work from later years. Bits of strings help the whole thing glide tremendously – and the record's a genre-busting blend of jazz, Brazilian roots, and complicated arrangements – unlike anything else we've ever heard, and still one of our favorite albums of all time! Titles include "Bebe", "Asa Branca", "Carinhoso", "Plin", "Gaio Da Roseira", and "Sereiarei". CD

✨✧ David AxelrodSeriously Deep ... CD
Polygram/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". First time ever on CD – a seminal reissue from Dusty Groove! CD

✨✧ Arnaldo BaptistaLoki ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
A freaky little solo album by Arnaldo Baptista of Os Mutantes – a set that's every bit as wild as you might guess from the cover! The album was recorded right after the first few classics by Os Mutantes – in 1974 – and Baptista wrote all of the songs, except for one, which lists "Os Mutantes" in the credits – which is an illustration of how strongly the sound of the record is tied to that group. Unlike the vocals of the group albums, though, the tracks feature Arnaldo's booze-drenched vocals right up front – with backing by piano, and some very theatrical arrangements that are quite different than the work of his earlier Tropicalia group. The record is tough to describe – sort of a mix of early 70s Euro singer/songwriter trends, particularly those of the Saravah scene – with maybe a bit of post-psych rock, with piano as the most dominant instrument in the mix. There's a surprisingly personal feel to the whole thing – and titles include "Uma Pessoa So", "Nao Estou Nem Ai", "Desculpe", "E Facil", and "Navegar De Novo". CD

✨✧ Nino FerrerNino Ferrer ... CD
Riviera/Polygram (France), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Very groovy stuff from Nino Ferrer – France's answer to the 60s beat group scene that was shaking big in Britain and Germany! Ferrer has a style that's greatly influenced by American R&B singers, and he's backed by a tight little combo that has a hard Hammond and guitar sound that works very well with his shouted soulful vocals! You might know his work from the Get Easy compilation – and a lot of the material on this great 1966 album has a similar sound – hard vocals, swinging instrumentation, and a groovy soulful groove – easily some of the most upbeat romping work from the French pop scene of the 60s! Titles include "Les Cornichons", "Oh He Hein Bon", "Je Veux Etre Noir", "Mirza", "C'Est Irreparable", "Shake Shake Ferrer", and "Le Millionnaire". CD

✨✧ Gilberto GilCopacabana Mon Amour – Trilha Sonora Original ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible bit of soundtrack work by Gilberto Gil – and one of his best albums! The record was originally recorded to accompany the work of director Rogerio Szanzerla, and it's a wonderful mix of samba, jazz, and post-Tropicalia psychedelia – all recorded in a warm intimate style that's similar to Gil's legendary London recording from 1971! The tracks are some of the most pioneering that Gil ever recorded – and they break free of the time and space constraints of some of his studio albums, stretching songs out into long open-ended explorations, 4 of which are over seven minutes long. Gil's vocals are extremely soulful, and his guitar playing is free and jazzy, often interspersed with some nice funky flute and percussion work. Titles include "Diga A Ela", "Mr. Sganzeria", "Blind Faith", "Yeh Yeh Yah Yah", and "Tomorrow Vai Ser Bacana". CD

Anita O'Day is fast and free in this live set recorded at Chicago's famous Mister Kelly's nightclub – a venue that gives the recording a nice intimate feel! As with many of her Verve sides, Anita dominates the set with her wit, warmth, and personality – working the crowd as much as an entertainer as a singer, and giving the record a direct approach that's quite different from torchier vocal sessions of the time. Backing is by a piano trio – and titles include "Tea For Two", "Star Eyes", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "The Song Is You", "Every Time I'm With You", and "But Not For Me". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest albums ever recorded by this hip vocal ensemble – set to arrangements by leader Gene Puerling, and some very swinging instrumental backings by Rob McConnell! Dinah WashingtonWhat A Diff'rence A Day Makes ... LP
Mercury, Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $6.99
One of the most important records in the career of Dinah Washington – even if only for the hit title track! The work here has Dinah elevating yet again – way past the R&B of her roots, and the jazz of a few years later – into a territory that definitely earns her the title of Queen, with her majestic ability to balance all those previous styles, yet also come across with a new level of sophistication! The vocals are heartbreaking – really moving into that rich emotion of her final years – at a level that would become a huge influence for countless others in decades to come. VariousCircles – Mixed By Jazzanova ... CD
Brownswood/Talkin' Loud (Japan), 1998. Used ... $14.99
Very cool compilation series that has some of the world's best DJs selecting classic groovers from the back catalog of smaller Polygram labels – like MPS, Brownswood, and Talking Loud. This volume was picked by Jazzanova of Compost Records fame, and it's a stellar batch of 21st Century grooves that brings together tracks from around the world in a swirling mix of music that had us sitting on the edges of our seats throughout the whole thing. The gamut is very wide, but Jazzanova manage to make the whole thing work through a masterful approach to seque. Titles include "Janela De Ouro" by Egberto Gismonti, "Yaad" by The Indian Jazz Trio, "Fedime's Flight" by Jazzanova, "You've Got It Bad Girl" by Quincy Jones, "Tema Teimoso" by Cal Tjader, "Statement" by George Duke, "We Who Are Not As Others" by 4 Hero, and even a great remix of "You're The Best Thing" by the Style Council. 74 minutes long, and a beautiful mix of music that perfectly sums up Brownswood's 21st Century soul approach! ✨✧ Ray Goodman & BrownBest Of Ray, Goodman, & Brown ... CD
Polydor, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet silky harmony soul from the team of Ray, Goodman, and Brown – a group who were earlier known as The Moments, but who recorded later under a new name, probably because that nasty Sylvia Robinson retained the name for Stang Records out of a contractual obligation! Although the material by Ray Goodman & Brown is slicker than earlier work by The Moments, there's still a strong trace of the group's raw New Jersey soul style – which provides an excellent counterpoint to the slicker sound that Polygram was fusing to the group to bring them up to date a bit more. Lyrics are a bit off-beat, but that's always part of the charm of the group – and this great package includes a total of 18 tracks with some killer harmony numbers! Titles include "Happy Anniversary", "Slipped Away", "Special Lady", "Inside Of You", "Another Day", "Next Time I'll Know", "Take It To The Limit", "Heaven In The Rain", "Stay", "Pool Of Love", and "Each Time Is Like The First Time". ✨✧ Count BasieHigh Voltage ... LP
MPS, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Late niceness from Count Basie – and a set that definitely lives up to its name – a really high energy set, and one of the few times that Basie ever recorded for the MPS label! The group here works with sharp arrangements from Chico O'Farrill – who's got that punchy groove he was really perfecting in the 60s – a rhythmic snap that works just as well with the Basie group as Neal Hefti's charts did a decade before! Tunes are mostly standards, served up in a no-nonsense mode that's very heavy on the overall rhythmic conception of the group – but with some nice breakout solo moments, too – as you might hope for with a group that includes Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor, Eric Dixon on flute and tenor, Joe Newman on trumpet, Jerry Dodgion on alto, and Buddy Morrow on trombone. Titles include "Together", "If I Were A Bell", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Chicago", "Have You Met Miss Jones", "Day In Day Out", and "When Sunny Gets Blue". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Showbiz & AGRunaway Slave ... LP
Payday/Island, 1992. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A legendary record from Show & AG – and one of the best of the early 90s from the DITC camp! Runaway Slave came about during the end of an era when major labels still seemed to be hungry to popularize underground hip hop without watering it down – with London/Polygram stepping in to market & distribution for Payday Records – a label that ultimately served as an early proving ground for some of the most vital and popular hip hop artists ever – but this album has always been an underground phenomenon. It's a masterful one at that! LP, Vinyl record album
