David AxelrodSeriously Deep ... CD
Polygram/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ... $11.99
An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". First time ever on CD – a seminal reissue from Dusty Groove! CD

James BrownHot Pants ... CD
Polygram, 1971. Used ... $14.99
James Brown really opens up on this early 70s classic – really showing the world the amazing groove he was crafting with his band – who were let loose to jam in the studio, spinning out some really long grooves – which were then cut down to make this sweet little record! The title cut was a big single for James at the time, but it's presented here in its full 9 minute version – a monstrous jam that's equal to anything on the Payback record, or the JBs albums too – and the album also includes the long two-part take of "Escapism", and another funky gem – "Blues & Pants", which snaps along for a solid 9 minutes too! The album's filled with heavy funk, and the longer tracks allow for plenty of instrumental flourishes from Fred, Maceo, and the other JBs – and honestly, the record is more of a People Records session than a Polydor record from James. Even more amazing – this CD reissue features the full 19 minute version of "Hot Pants" – the unedited jam from the session! CD

Ed OG & Da BulldogsLife Of A Kid In The Ghetto (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Polygram/Get On Down, 1991. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 25.99
Ed OG's nice debut, with a slightly jazzy touch on the production and literate, intelligent lyrics. We really couldn't get with "Bug A Boo", but besides that, this first LP's solid from start to finish, from the days when that wasn't so uncommon. Drop the needle on this and head back in time to a day when backpacker wasn't necessarily a derogatory term, a beat wasn't a straight loop of a common sample, and rhyme skills included being able to follow the beat, which was typically at least a little bit funky. With the now classic "Be A Father To Your Child", plus standout tracks like "I'm Different", "Speak Upon It", "I Got To Have It" and "Life Of A Kid In The Ghetto". 12 tracks in all, also includes "Gotta Have Money", "Feel Like A Nut", "She Said It Was Great", "Dedicated To The Right Wingers", 'Let ME Tickle Your Fancy" and "Stop (Think For A Moment)". Nino FerrerNino Ferrer ... CD
Riviera/Polygram (France), 1966. Used ... $12.99
Very groovy stuff from Nino Ferrer – France's answer to the 60s beat group scene that was shaking big in Britain and Germany! Ferrer has a style that's greatly influenced by American R&B singers, and he's backed by a tight little combo that has a hard Hammond and guitar sound that works very well with his shouted soulful vocals! You might know his work from the Get Easy compilation – and a lot of the material on this great 1966 album has a similar sound – hard vocals, swinging instrumentation, and a groovy soulful groove – easily some of the most upbeat romping work from the French pop scene of the 60s! Titles include "Les Cornichons", "Oh He Hein Bon", "Je Veux Etre Noir", "Mirza", "C'Est Irreparable", "Shake Shake Ferrer", and "Le Millionnaire". CD

Tim MaiaTim Maia (1972) ... CD
Polygram/Oficial Arquivos, 1972. Used ... $9.99
An amazing early effort from Brazilian soul hero Tim Maia – one of his greatest ever! Even at this early point in his career, Maia had a fantastically soulful feel in his voice – steeped in influences from American soul greats of the 60s, and recorded here with some great arrangements that sound almost like they were done in the Chess studios back in the old days! The drumming is nice and funky, and Maia uses very loose and free approach to the vocals on most tracks, with less of the heavier quality of some later recordings. Amazing! Titles include "My Little Girl", "Idade", "Canario Do Reino", "Lamento", "Razao De Sambar", and "Ja Era Tempo De Voce". CD

Monday MichiruDouble Image ... CD
Polygram (Japan), 1998. New Copy ... $8.99
A real turning point for Monday Michiru – a set that has the Japanese singer moving into more complex rhythms than some of the straighter soul of her initial releases – really keeping things interesting as she stretches out lyrically too! Monday arranged and produced most of the record – although she also has help from some great guests, as was common in her early years – a lineup that includes DJ Krush, Mondo Grosso, Byron Wallen, and The Angel – all of whom add some creative energy to the project. There's a touch of drum and bass in the mix at times, but the key highlight is Monday's great sense of song and her fantastic vocals – soaring out as one of the few late 90s audiences who can take things over the top to a whole new audience. Cuts include "Reflexions", "You Make Me", "Island Of The Saints", "Method 2 The Madness", "Double Image", and "Scheme Of Things". CD

Very nice jazz-oriented material that has Sarah working with Jimmy Jones, one of her best accompanists, or John Malachi, who was in Billy Eckstine's band at the same time Sarah was with the group. All the tracks have nice small combo instrumentation – and Sarah keeps things nice and warm vocally, free to get a bit more intimate than usual in the album's casual setting. Caetano Veloso & Gilberto GilBarra 69 ... LP
Polygram/Philips (Brazil), 1969. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A seminal live set that brings together two giants of the Tropicalia scene – Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, recorded here in a rough-edged performance from 1969! The format has the artists alternating songs throughout the set, then coming together for a duet at the end – and the recording quality is oddly spotty – sounding much more like a bootleg than the higher end sound you'd expect from Philips. But that quality can easily be excused given not only the historical nature of the show, but also the incredible performances by both artists – easily at their most vibrant here, and pulling out an incredible response from the crowd! Rough, but great – an essential addition to the catalog of both artists – with tunes by Caetano that include "Cinema Olympia", "Atras Do Trio Eletrico", and "Superbacana"; by Gil that include "Frevo Rasgado" and "Domingo No Parque", and a duet medley that features "Alegria, Alegria", "Hino Do Esporte Clube Bahia", and "Aquele Abraco". Guy and Young trade lines in a very nicely relaxed format, and even though the record's mostly all standards, the group works well with the material. Polygram, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
James Brown gets even better than before – working here in the setting of a blacksploitation soundtracks – which makes the album a doubly funky outing from the 70s! James is a master throughout – beating Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield at their own games – as he works with super-tight work from the JBs, plus a bit of vocals from Lyn Collins – all in a massive batch of tracks that further expand his funky palette! Unlike other blacksploitation soundtracks, which usually have one or two key funky tunes, this one's almost entirely overflowing with gems – including Lyn Collins on a version of "Mama Feelgood" that's worth the price of the record alone! The whole thing's great, though – and titles include the classic "Down & Out in New York City", plus "Blind Man Can See It", "Sportin' Life", "The Boss", "Dirty Harri", and "Chase". CD

✨✧ Gilberto GilCopacabana Mon Amour – Trilha Sonora Original ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1970. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible bit of soundtrack work by Gilberto Gil – and one of his best albums! The record was originally recorded to accompany the work of director Rogerio Szanzerla, and it's a wonderful mix of samba, jazz, and post-Tropicalia psychedelia – all recorded in a warm intimate style that's similar to Gil's legendary London recording from 1971! The tracks are some of the most pioneering that Gil ever recorded – and they break free of the time and space constraints of some of his studio albums, stretching songs out into long open-ended explorations, 4 of which are over seven minutes long. Gil's vocals are extremely soulful, and his guitar playing is free and jazzy, often interspersed with some nice funky flute and percussion work. Titles include "Diga A Ela", "Mr. Sganzeria", "Blind Faith", "Yeh Yeh Yah Yah", and "Tomorrow Vai Ser Bacana". CD

✨✧ Joao GilbertoJoao Gilberto (1973) ... CD
Polygram (Brazil), 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most heavenly albums ever recorded – a sublime post-60s session by Joao Gilberto, one with even more fluid grace than his original bossa nova classics! The setting here is extremely spare – Joao on vocals and acoustic guitar, backed by only a slight bit of percussion – and recorded with an sound that's incredibly clear and incredibly precise – so that each gentle note, each slight rasp of the guitar comes through beautifully – as do Joao's breathily personal vocals! There's a sense of poise and presence here that Gilberto hardly matched again – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given how great most of his other records already are. The whole thing's tremendous – a true treasure, and easily one of the top classics in Brazilian music from the 70s! Titles include a landmark version of "Aguas De Marco", plus "Undiu", "Falsa Baiana", "Avarandado", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Izaura", "E Preciso Perdoar", "Valsa", and "Eu Vim Da Bahia". CD

✨✧ Arnaldo BaptistaLoki (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Polygram/Polysom (Brazil), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A freaky little solo album by Arnaldo Baptista of Os Mutantes – a set that's every bit as wild as you might guess from the cover! The album was recorded right after the first few classics by Os Mutantes – in 1974 – and Baptista wrote all of the songs, except for one, which lists "Os Mutantes" in the credits – which is an illustration of how strongly the sound of the record is tied to that group. Unlike the vocals of the group albums, though, the tracks feature Arnaldo's booze-drenched vocals right up front – with backing by piano, and some very theatrical arrangements that are quite different than the work of his earlier Tropicalia group. The record is tough to describe – sort of a mix of early 70s Euro singer/songwriter trends, particularly those of the Saravah scene – with maybe a bit of post-psych rock, with piano as the most dominant instrument in the mix. There's a surprisingly personal feel to the whole thing – and titles include "Uma Pessoa So", "Nao Estou Nem Ai", "Desculpe", "E Facil", and "Navegar De Novo". LP, Vinyl record album

Polygram/Elemental (Spain), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from Caetano Veloso – a rare all-English language set, recorded in London during the years of his exile! The post-Tropicalia set is a fair bit different than any other Veloso album we can think of – not just because of the English language, but also because the approach is somewhat gentle, and almost folksy at times – a real change from his experimental modes of the late 60s, and easily his most personal statement to date. The tunes are incredibly beautiful – filled with themes of loss and longing that no doubt come from his separation from Brazil – and although a few tunes feature light strings from Phil Ryan, most of the backings are relatively light, and almost acoustic. Titles include the classics "Shoot Me Dead", "If You Hold a Stone", "Maria Bethania", "In The Hot Sun Of A Christmas Day", and "London, London" – plus a cover of "Asa Branca". LP, Vinyl record album
