Phil FranceSwimmer ... CD
Gondwana (UK), 2017. Used ... $1.99
Beautiful keyboard lines from Phil France – served up here in a mode that's partly jazz, maybe partly more laidback – and often in the kind of slow-building style we love on other records on the Gondwana label! There's almost a meditative vibe to the music – somewhere in the Carlos Nino/Miguel Atwood-Ferguson mode, but maybe more compact – as Phil's keyboards are mixed with light use of violin and cello, plus some additional sound elements as well – all in a way that makes us almost think that France would be great at scoring soundtracks, although these instrumental tunes have a nicely changed-up sense of complexity overall. Much deeper than just the usual "soundscape" album you might mistake this one for – with tracks that include "December", "Animator", "London Park Hotel", "Kubrick", "Joy Of Brass", and "The Swimmer". Gondwana (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sweet keyboards from Phil France – a player who's more than content enough to let his instrument take the lead, often in these flowing soundscapes that are even more evocative than on his previous album for Gondwana – but a musician who also manages to echo some deeper currents, but with a surprisingly small amount of effort! Many of these songs have a meditative quality – similar to the shift the Gondwana spiritual jazz label has taken in recent years – and France picks up and drops rhythmic elements throughout the set – sometimes to augment the cyclical flow of his keyboard lines, sometimes as a way to give that energy a bit more direction. Phil handles most of the instrumentation on the album, but has two guest drummers – and titles include "The Breaks", "Circle", "Bells", "River", "Prophet", "The First Thing That You Say", and "Mr Jackal". John CaleFear (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Island/Culture Factory (France), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99 15.98
One of the best solo albums ever from John Cale – a set that has the singer playing a lot of piano alongside his vocals, which creates this moody, evocative quality that's really wonderful! Cale's songwriting is always pretty compelling, but the heavy use of piano really brings out a depth to his lyrics here – further enforced by the relatively spacious sense of recording used throughout. A few numbers add in more electric elements – but with Brian Eno along on electronics and listed as a co-producer, the record's definitely got this balance between elements that's very careful. Phil Manzanera plays guitar, and also helped with the overall construction of the set – and you can hear some of the best elements of his own solo sets too. Titles include the classic "Fear Is A Man's Best Friend", plus "Gun", "The Man Who Couldn't Afford To Orgy", "You Know More Than I Know", "Momamma Scuba", and "Buffalo Ballet". CD

Horace Tapscott & The Pan Afrikan Peoples ArkestraWhy Don't You Listen – Live At LACMA 1998 ... CD
Dark Tree (France), 1998. New Copy ... $16.99
An amazing record from pianist Horace Tapscott – maybe one of his most ambitious projects ever, and a set that stands head and shoulders next to his classic work for the Nimbus label! As with some of those records, this set features his large Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra – performing live at LACMA in 1998, and also augmented by a vocal choir at times – working with a sense of pride and power that's very much in the best 70s spiritual jazz mode! We honestly didn't know that Tapscott had continued the group this far into the 90s – we've only heard them on record up through the early 80s – and the lineup really represents the maturing vision of the music, with some especially great work from Tapscott on piano, Phil Ranelin on trombone, and Michael Session on soprano, alto, and tenor – plus lead vocals from the mighty Dwight Trible. Titles include "Aiee The Phantom", "Fela Fela", "Listen Africa", "Caravan", and "Why Don't You Listen". CD

France Gall1968 ... CD
Philips (France), 1967. Used ... $4.99
A record as revolutionary as the French year in which it was recorded – an amazing batch of late 60s grooves from Parisian pop madame France Gall! The set's upbeat and jaunty, with plenty of fuzz – almost a psyche pop sound, with lots of groovy guitars that make the album sparkle with plenty of razor-sharp notes! Gall's vocals are as wonderful as ever, and almost sound a bit more sinister in this setting – thanks to arrangements by Alain Gouraguer and the great David Whitaker. There's plenty of France Gall classics here – including versions of the Serge Gainsbourg tunes "Nefertiti" and "Teenie Weenie Boppie" – plus "Toi Que Je Veux", "Made In France", "Bebe Requin", and "Avant La Bagarre". ✨✧ Serge GainsbourgAux Armes Et Caetera ... CD
Philips (France), 1979. Used ... $8.99
A great little album from Serge – possibly his last truly genius record, and one with a very unusual twist! The album was recorded in Jamaica with production from Sly & Robbie – very much in the late 70s, big-business reggae mode – but done with Serge's usual flair for the lyric. The album's not really a reggae album – more a set of dubby tracks that have a similar feel to some of Serge's other backings during the 70s, with whispered sexy lyrics over the top. The record shouldn't work, but it does – and picks up a sound that's similar to Serge's work on the excellent album L'Homme A Tete Chou! Titles include "Relax Baby Be Cool", "Daisy Temple", "Javanaise Remake", "Pas Long Feu", and "Marilou Reggae Dub". CD

The score features the main theme "La Fautive" – in both a vocal version by Serge, plus two instrumental readings that have a mellower tone. Other tracks include the duet with Deneuve on "Dieu Fumeur De Havanes", also done later as an instrumental – plus 2 vocal numbers, "Papa Nono" and "La P'Tite Agathe", written by Serge, but sung by Depardieu with the band Bijou! Serge GainsbourgRock Around The Bunker ... LP
Philips (France), 1975. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Brother Serge shocked the world when he released this album of Nazi Rock in the mid 70s – but as might be expected, the whole thing's an ironic take on fascism – and not really the overt celebration you might think! That aspect of the record becomes a bit clearer when you consider Gainsbourg's (nee Ginsburg) Jewish background – and in a way, the campy presentation of the material here almost makes the Nazis come off like the portrayal of Hitler in The Producers! Backings are by a small combo that includes the great Alan Hawkshaw on keyboards and Alan Parker on guitar – and titles include "S.S. In Uruguay", "Yellow Star", "Rock Around The Bunker", "Nazi Rock", and a great version of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Slide HamptonExodus ... LP
Philips (France), 1962. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic album by Slide Hampton – one of his best, and one of his rarest! Like a number of other important players of his generation, Slide got his start on the American scene, but moved to Europe during the 1960s – where he really began to open up. This excellent session was recorded in Paris in 1962, and it features Slide leading an octet through some of the most complicated arrangements of his early years. Players include some great underground American players, like trumpeter Richard Williams, bassist Butch Warren, tenorist George Coleman, and trombonist Benjamin Jacobs-El, whose frequent co-tromboning with Hampton always made for an excellent sound. As on Slide's Atlantic sides, the group swings like a mofo – staying tight on the choruses, but really breaking out from the pack with some amazing solo work. Titles include "Star Eyes", "Straight No Chaser", "Confirmation", "Exodus", and "A Moment's Notice". LP, Vinyl record album

Philippe Doray & Les Asociaux AssociesNouveaux Modes Industriels ... LP
Souffle Continu (France), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
New industrial modes from Philippe Doray and his group of French experimentalists – not sounds that fall into the industrial dance world of the late 80s, but those very early, groundbreaking creations from Throbbing Gristle and the rest of their generation! This album's maybe slightly more song-based than Doray's previous album with his group, but there's still a pretty freewheeling, all-exploded quality going on here – that same way that TG and some of their British contemporaries took all the longer experiments of Krautrock and other sonic pioneers from the early 70s, and compressed them down to shorter, noisier moments – yet which somehow often have a songform too. Titles include "Pge De Magazin", "Le Petit Herisson Jaune", "Pas De Sevice Apres Vente", "Dans Le Dadale", "Clair Et Net", and "Contrechant Magnetique". LP, Vinyl record album

No baby pop here, as France Gall is all-woman throughout – one of the best of the French female pop singers of the mid 60s, working here with an upbeat, groovy sound throughout! Backings are by the great Alain Gouraguer, who gives the record a tightly jerking kind of feel – a sound that's the Paris contribution to the same sort of mod grooves that were coming out of the London scene at the time. The album's filled with classics by Gall, all sung in a sweet voice that's a great contrast to the music – wonderful stuff throughout, with titles that include "Baby Pop", "Cet Air La", "L'Amerique", "Mon Bateau De Nuit", and "Deux Oiseaux". France Gall won the Eurovision song contest with the title track of this one – and for good reason too, given that the tune is totally groovy! The rest of the work here really follows suit – romping, jerking, and grooving in that wonderful mix of mod rhythms that made France's 60s material so great – some of the best of the French pop scene at the time, with a sound that's really a cut above on all the numbers here! Backings are by the mighty Alain Gouraguer, who brings in a hip mix of jazz inflections, rocking rhythms, and some of the more sparkling soundtrack elements bubbling in the French 60s scene – all a perfect accompaniment for Gall's catchy girl pop vocals. Titles include "Poupee De Cire Poupee De Son", written by Serge Gainsbourg – plus "Le Coeur Qui Jazze", "Le Premier Chagrin D'Amour", "On T'Avait Prevenue", "Dis A Ton Capitaine", "Nounours", "Laisse Tomber Les Filles", and "Bonne Nuit". Freesound/Digger's Digest (France), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99
An album with an ancient-looking painting on the front, but a style that's pure 70s – served up here in a keyboard-heavy style from sound library giant Jacky Giordano! Jacky's given us plenty of funky records over the years, and this rare gem is definitely up with those 70s classics – lots of tight, sharp tracks – drums that crackle nicely, but with an approach to funk that's nicely changed up from the familiar – topped with these keyboard lines that have a very different flavor on each track, creating a strong sense of variety, usually just with a bit of bass in the mix as well! The album supposedly features help from contemporary Yan Tregger – and titles include "Acid Feerique", "Philopsis", "Fluid Man", "Steel Mongoes", "Jumbo Flash", "Callisto", "Supplice Form", and "Agartha". Beautifully groovy work from mid 60s France – all by a singer who's every bit as great as France Gall, Francoise Hardy, or other French greats of the time – but not nearly as well known! This cool collection should correct that fact, as it finally gives worldwide exposure to this brilliant material from Annie Philippe – a bold-voiced female singer whose delivery of the songs is superb throughout – augmented by early arrangements from the likes of Jean-Claude Vannier, Paul Mauriat, Christian Gaubert, and others! Almost all the numbers have a romping quality that lives up to the "ye ye" promise of the title – but there's also a vibe that's deeper than throwaway pop, as Philippe manages to bring a lot of punch to the tunes without ever losing her cool – as you'll hear on tunes that include "pas De Taxi", "Pour La Gloire", "Plus Rien", "C'Est La Mode", "On M'A Toujours Dit", "Sensational Jeffry", "J'Ai Rate Mon Bac", "Un Petite Croix", "Le Mannequin", "Bonjour Bonsoir Et Au Revoir", and "J'Ai Tant De Peine". A sweet little soundtrack from Phillipe Sarde – with a real mix of styles! Some of the numbers have that dreamy French sound you'll get on some of Sarde's more mellow scores – a bit airy, with floating instrumentation that sounds nice and sexy. Other tracks are more full-on – with a crashing beat and a bit of funk, in a nice action and "chase" mode – and a few tracks have vocals, but aren't as great. Overall, the score's filled with lots of great tracks – especially if you dig groovy French 70s sounds! A trio of really lovely soundtracks from the great French composer Philippe Sarde – each of them a magical illustration of his wonderful talents! Mille Milliards De Dollars has a fantastic use of piano throughout – jazzy, but warm and sentimental around the edges – really the dominant instrument amidst some lighter orchestrations, and used in ways that make for some of the most tuneful, seductive moments in Sarde's legacy from the time! Conte De La Folie Ordinaire is an unusual film – one that stars the great Ben Gazzara in a set of scenes adapted from the stories of Charles Bukowski – set to music by Sarde that often evokes a sense of place in the story, with both Mexican and bluegrass elements in the songs. Last up is Le Crabe-Tambour – Sarde at his most dramatic, scoring for a military thriller – and using lots of brass in very offbeat ways! CD

Groundbreaking work from the Paris scene of the 70s – a record that's kind of post-prog, post-improvisation, and which maybe sets the scene for sonic experiments on the UK scene in years to come! Philippe Doray is at the helm of his antisocial associates here – a quintet that mixes elements of rock, jazz, and avant classical styles, which are then altered with a sensibility borrowed from more serious worlds of musique concrete and electro-acoustic experimentation – but handled with a spirit that's very down to earth and freewheeling! There's elements here to appeal to fans of all the many styles involved – and forward to ears tuned towards the noisier experiments of Nurse With Wound, The Hafler Trio, and others – a really amazing record, with titles that include "Nucleaire", "Ramasse", "Secoue Le Flipeur", "Miettes", "Fin De Semain Dans Un Parc D'Attraction", and "La Capitale De L'Ennemi". A really unusual album recorded in Jakarta during the early 70s – a set that's certainly got some elements of Indonesian music in the mix, but which also takes on bits of funk, and mixes up electric and acoustic instrumentation in ways that make for a really compelling blend of rhythms and grooves! At some times, the tunes are very rhythmic – almost sounding more early 80s in presentation – but other times, Harry and the group lay back and relax into more expressive tunes – usually the ones with Indonesian lyrics, which balance out the funkier numbers with a more relaxed vibe. The group is heavy on percussion on many tracks – and titles include "Peacock Dog", "Roda Angin", "Don't Talk About Freedom", "Borobudur", "Imagine", and "Malaria". LP, Vinyl record album

Guts bills this set as "an Afro-Tropical experiment" – but to us, the album's just a further expansion of his wonderful talents as a producer – which have really come a long way in just a few years! Guts maybe got his start in hip hop, but he's able to embrace a globe's worth of sound, especially in a project like this – which we might liken to some of the more globally-conscious records by Quantic – although Guts is working here on the Parisian scene, and maybe has even closer access to cross-cultural channels! The set includes work by plenty of guests – a lineup that includes Pat Kalla, Pinduca, Nazare Pereira, Emma Lamadji, Kandy Gura, CAtia Werneck, Djeuhdjoah, and others – on titles that include "Voyaging Bird", "Ja Nao Ha Mais Paz", "Li Dous Konsa", "Sa Ce Kado", "Kenke Corner", "Mucagiami", "Penda", and "Matadou". Saravah/Souffle Continu (France), 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collaboration between two key members of the French avant jazz scene – working here in a spirit that really lives up to the genre-busting legacy of the Saravah Records label! Philippe Mate improvises here on saxophone – but in a unique space that's controlled by Daniel Vallancien – not really a musician himself, but a key force in recording the classic BYG/Actuel avant jazz sessions a few years before – working here in the studio to inflect the performance of Mate with all sorts of effects and studio techniques! The approach isn't nearly as gimmicky as you might expect – and instead, the whole thing is maybe a free jazz nod to some of the more stodgy, academic electro-acoustic sounds from Paris – given a very earthy, organic quality here by the duo. Titles include "Cambodge 70", "Sanza Sallee", "Cyclothime", "Osakaphone", "Campus", and "Sax Hi Fi". LP, Vinyl record album

Beautiful CD that brings together 20 tracks of the fragile French folk songwriting of the great Georges Brassens. If you don't know Brassens, he was one twisted mofo, and his work has gone onto provide the inspiration for a range of musicians that runs from Serge Gainsbourg to Momus. Fantastic! This is the French pressing of the Michel Legrand score to Jaques Demy's incredible 1965 film The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg. Every word of dialogue in the film is sung, and Legrand came up with an amazing array of themes to carry the emotion of the film. Embedded in here are lines that later became worldwide hits – like "I Will Wait For You" and "Watch What Happens" – but in this version, the songs are just themes in the huge pastiche of dialogue and narrative, and they lurk behind the score in a beautiful way. This is one of our favorite all-time soundtracks, and this French version has a very lovely cover with Catherine Deneuve standing amidst some umbrellas! The sound is quite 80s-oriented – with more electric rhythms and a fair bit of keyboards – but Serge makes the best of the sound by delivering the lyrics in his older style of singing – slightly spoken, always honest, in that raspy tone that makes just about all his records pretty compelling! And in a way, the lyrics here are a lot more direct – taking advantage of an opening up of ideals in the post-punk years, and hitting topics with even more force than before. Titles include "Suck Baby Suck", "Gloomy Sunday", "Dispatch Box", "Shotgun", "Five Easy Pisseuses", and "You're Under Arrest". LP, Vinyl record album

Brigitte BardotLa Belle Et Le Blues ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
Brigitte Bardot's best known on these shores as an actress, but during the 60s she cut some really fantastic work on the scene in Paris – including a fair bit of groovers that were done with help from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg! Bardot provided a fantastic new voice in the world of pop music – a singer who was unabashedly open about her desires, and very different than the more melancholy stars of a few years before – a quality that's further emphasized by the wonderfully groovy instrumentation used on most of these tracks! Production and arrangements are superb – and put this music in the best territory of the grooviest 60s French pop by artists like Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall, Jacques Dutronc, and a rare few others. This is the first-ever English-annotated collection of work from the period – and features a whopping 25 tracks from her recordings for Philips and Disc AZ – titles that include "Harley Davidson", "Contact", "Neu Au Soleil", "Je Danse Donc Je Suis", "La Madrague", "Les Hommes Endormis", "Je Voudrais Perdre La Memoire", "Mr Sun", "Le Diable Est Anglais", "Tu Es Venu Mon Amour", "John Et Michel", "Gang Gang", and duets with Serge Gainsbourg on "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus". Jorge BenSilencio No Brooklin ... CD
Atoll Music (France), 1967. Used ... $39.99
A fantastic early album from Jorge Ben – and one that's also a bit obscure, given that it was one of the few that he didn't cut for Philips Records during the first decade of his career! The album's one of Jorge's most upbeat, most lively – with the kind of ebullient mix of samba and soul influences that he brought to his first big hits – but recorded here in a way that's maybe even more frenetic, especially when piano lines spin out quickly next to his incredible vocals – with a style that's almost soul jazz at times! The whole thing's wonderful – a record that matches, if not tops any of his other 60s albums – and titles include the killer "A Jovem Samba" – worth the price of the album alone – plus "Nascimento De Um Principe Africando", "Menina Gata Augusta", "Si Wanda", "Rosa Mas Que Nada", "Amor De Carnaval", and "Todo Colorida". Brigitte FontaineBrigitte Fontaine (1972) ... CD
Saravah (France), 1972. Used ... $13.99
A fantastic album by this enigmatic French singer – one of her first truly experimental albums! The record differs from some of her other albums quite a bit – and has a very strange mix of styles that go from straight ahead (only a track or two), to wildly experimental – very much in the best genre-breaking mode that was going on with the Saravah Records scene in the post-1968 years. Although longtime partner Areski did contribute to this album, the record also features work by Saravah labelmate Jacques Higelin, plus French jazz players like Georges Arvanitas and Philippe Mate – all of whom really help bring some fresh flavors to the record! Great stuff all 'round, and titles include "Brigitte", "Moi Aussi", "Eros", "Marcelle", "Premier Juillet", and "Le Dragon". CD

Four TopsNature Planned It ... CD
Motown/Elemental (France), 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $14.99
Why did Motown ever let the Four Tops get away? This album was their last for the label – and it's an excellent one, filled with soul, sweetness, and some of the best arrangements the group had in their later years! The soul component is super-high – with tight group instrumentation that reminds us of the best Philly backing combos of the same time, but leaner too – as Dennis Coffey and Wah Wah Ragin are on guitars, Jack Ashford handles percussion, and Leonard Caston adds some nice funky keyboards. The real talent, though, is the group – and Levi Stubbs is in fine fine form on cuts like "She's An Understanding Woman", "I Am Your Man", "If You Let Me", "Nature Planned It", "Walk With Me, Talk With Me Darling", and "Happy (Is A Bumpy Road)". Even includes a great version of Todd Rundgren's wonderful track "We Gotta Get You A Woman"! CD

Synchro Rhythmic Eclectic LanguageLambi (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Moshe Naim/Sommor (Spain), 1976. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
A really fantastic jazz project from early 70s France – but one that also features a strong contribution from Chicago percussionist Steve McCall – best known for his work in the Air trio, and as part of the AACM! The music is a very freewheeling mix of jazz and global elements – with lots of percussion and drums from Steve McCall, saxes from the famous Joe Maka, keyboards from Saint Yves Dolphy, and guitar from Gerard Cubillon – plus occasional vocals from Gerard Philadelphe and Franck Valmont! The album's mostly instrumental overall, and many of the rhythms have echoes of styles from Guadeloupe – mixed with bolder jazz moments, all in a way that's one of those perfect French criss-crossings of cultures from the 70s. Titles include "Rigibo", "Lambi", "ABCD", and "Pasto". 2LP set features bonus tracks that have never been on vinyl – "KT 3", "El Gason", "Rete", and "Knell". LP, Vinyl record album

Ike TurnerEdge (limited edition LP sleeve pressing) ... CD
Fantasy/Culture Factory (France), 1980. New Copy ... $4.99 14.98
One of the last Ike Turner albums to contain lead vocals by Tina – a set from the start of the 80s, issued right before Tina hit that huge solo career on her own! Tina's vocals come in early and are in very much in fine form – more in the mode she'd use on records to come than her sound back in the day, but lacking nothing at all in terms of her phrasing – even when Ike and the group take on tunes by some of the pair's contemporaries like Bill Withers, Shirley Caesar, and Elton John! Side two has Ike stepping into the vocal spotlight – a shift that may well have come from the rift between the two at the time – but his appearance is actually a great thing, and maybe creates a bit of freshness as he works here to front the Home Grown Funk band. Those tunes have more of an 80s funk approach – often with heavy basslines – and Ike tunes include "Lum Dum", "Party Vibes", "No Other Woman", and "I Can't Believe" – while Tina titles include "Lean On Me", "Use Me", "Shame Shame Shame", "Philadelphia Freedom", and "Only Women Bleed". Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1930s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 29.99
Famous songs from French films – served up here in a massive 3CD set that combines the biggest moments from both pre and postwar cinema! These songs are mostly vocal numbers, not instrumental themes – which makes the package a bit different than other soundtrack collections, and which also ties the evolution of cinema in France to the evolution of chanson – huge transformations that happen in a really short space – and which take place in terms of style, mood, meaning, and method! Material of the 30s tends to be a bit more sentimental or romantic, the middle period shows a mixture of modern moments with more traditional ones, and things really take off in the 50s – as bits of jazz and other styles come into the mix. 60 tracks in all, with notes in French and English – and work by Charles Trenet, Colette Mars, Suzy Delair, Brigitte Bardot, Georges Brassens, Edith Piaf, Jeanne Moreau, Arletty, Jacques Pills, Martine Carol, Juliette Greco, Henri Garat, Jean Mumiere, Fernandel, Tino Rossi, Yves Montand, Lucien Jeunesse, Philippe Clay, Mouloudji, Magali Noel, Corinne Marchand, Hildegard Neff, and many others. VariousToujours Chic – More French Girl Singers Of The 1960s (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
Incredible female pop from 60s France – not weepy ballads or old school Paris numbers, but the kind of hip-snapping, all-groovy material that made the 60s French scene so great! Loads of these tracks are new to our ears (and we love French grooves a lot!) – and this volume of the series seems to dig even deeper than before – through a range of rare 7" EP material and singles, to come up with some killer tracks that will move way beyond the bigger cuts you might know from Francoise Hardy or Brigitte Bardot. The production and instrumentation is superb throughout – often with these funky currents that make these tracks feel years ahead of their time – and as usual with Ace, the whole presentation is great – from ultra-clear sound through full notes on the music too. Titles include "Rouge Rouge" by Christie Laume, "Pour La Gloire" by Annie Philippe, "Demain" by Zouzou, "Cours Si Tu As Peur" by Fabienne, "A La Fin De La Soiree" by Sheila, "Cette Nuit" by Pussycat, "Angel Of Sin" by Charlotte Walters, "Les Prisons De Sa Majeste" by Delphine, and "Le Nenuphar" by Stone. ✨✧ Palm UnitDon't Buy Ivory Anymore – The Music Of Henri Texier ... CD
Komos (France), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Palm Unit began their recorded career with a great tribute to French jazz legend Jef Gilson – but here, they maybe sound even more amazing – in an album that takes on the tunes of bassist Henri Texier, but with results that are completely the group's own! Bass definitely figures in the music – as organist Frederic Ecoffier plays some very cool bass synth too – but the music has this warm, organic flow that's very much like some of the more unusual albums that Texier recorded in the 70s – music that certainly has jazz at the core, but which is very open to embracing other sounds too – in a lineup that also features Lionel Martin on tenor, Philippe Pipon Garcia on drums, and Abraham Mansfarroll on percussion. The drums and percussion dance along in these wonderful rhythms with the keyboards and electric bassbits – and the tenor tops things off with a very soulful vibe. The set features one track with vocals – "Le Piroguer" – and other titles include "Homme Rogue", "Mad Nomad", "Don't Buy Ivory Anymore", "Quand Le Blues S'En Ira", and "Mr Freeman". CD

Delabel (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Grooviness abounds! This set's a wonderful batch of obscure French pop tunes – the kind of upbeat, hard-swinging 60s numbers that are a far cry from the moodier, more sentimental modes of the years before – with complicated elements laid alongside some straightforward grooves – all with production and execution that's completely sublime! If you dig the music of Serge Gainsbourg, and have always wanted to go further, this set's a great place to start – as it's got an excellent blend of slightly funky styles that feature lots of work on fuzzed-out guitars, organ, and heavy bass – the sorts of ultra-hip sounds you might always dig for on French records, yet never find together in one place as great as this! Titles include "Cuisses Nues, Bottes De Cuir" by Philippe Nicaud, "Bernadette" by L'Oeil, "A Degager" by Les Fleurs De Pavot, "Rouge Rouge" by Christie Laume, "Les Filles C'Est Fait" by Charlotte Leslie, "Le Pape Du Pop" by Stephane Varegues, "Avec Les Oreilles" by Monique Thubert, and "Sexologie" by Danyel Gerard.
