Phil FranceCircle ... CD
Gondwana (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
Sweet keyboards from Phil France – a player who's more than content enough to let his instrument take the lead, often in these flowing soundscapes that are even more evocative than on his previous album for Gondwana – but a musician who also manages to echo some deeper currents, but with a surprisingly small amount of effort! Many of these songs have a meditative quality – similar to the shift the Gondwana spiritual jazz label has taken in recent years – and France picks up and drops rhythmic elements throughout the set – sometimes to augment the cyclical flow of his keyboard lines, sometimes as a way to give that energy a bit more direction. Phil handles most of the instrumentation on the album, but has two guest drummers – and titles include "The Breaks", "Circle", "Bells", "River", "Prophet", "The First Thing That You Say", and "Mr Jackal". ✨✧ Phil FranceSwimmer ... CD
Twentysix-Two (UK), 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful keyboard lines from Phil France – served up here in a mode that's partly jazz, maybe partly more laidback – and often in the kind of slow-building style we love on other records on the Gondwana label! There's almost a meditative vibe to the music – somewhere in the Carlos Nino/Miguel Atwood-Ferguson mode, but maybe more compact – as Phil's keyboards are mixed with light use of violin and cello, plus some additional sound elements as well – all in a way that makes us almost think that France would be great at scoring soundtracks, although these instrumental tunes have a nicely changed-up sense of complexity overall. Much deeper than just the usual "soundscape" album you might mistake this one for – with tracks that include "December", "Animator", "London Park Hotel", "Kubrick", "Joy Of Brass", and "The Swimmer". Phil Woods & His European Rhythm MachinePhil Woods & His European Rhythm Machine (Pierre Cardin) ... LP
Pierre Cardin (France), 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
An excellent album of funky electric jazz – and possibly the best one that Phil Woods cut with his European group! The quartet's a very hip group that's way hipper than its clunky name – with Gordon Beck on electric piano and organ, Daniel Humair on percussion and drums, and Henri Texier on bass, flute, and African percussion – all instrumentalists who dip heavily into the deep bag of their mighty talents for the date, helping to push Phil's music into some very cool new territory! The album cooks a lot harder than Woods' previous MGM date with the Rhythm Machine group in Europe – and has a really freewheeling vibe, and a sound that's almost outside at points. All tracks are long, with a modal electric approach that's very nice – and funky in the best parts – and titles include "Chromatic Banana", "Ultimate Choice", "The Last Page", and "The Day When The World". Blossom DearieI'm Hip ... CD
Sony (France), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $19.99
An excellent set that pulls together some of the rare recordings that Blossom cut for the tiny Daffodil Records label! The sides are some of Blossom's last great jazz recordings – and the set digs through the recordings to sift past some of the more cocktail-oriented material in the Daffodil years. Much of this stuff features Blossom alone, accompanying her sweet vocals on acoustic or electric piano – but a few other cuts feature some extra playing, like "Yardbird Suite", which includes tenor by Phil Woods, or "Baby, It's Cold Outside", done as a vocal duet with Bob Dorough! Other titles include "I'm Hip", "Inside A Silent Tear", "In Your Eyes", "You Fascinate Me", "Round About", and "I'm Shadowing You". 15 tracks in all. CD

A rare session as a leader for Niels Henning Orsted Pederson – the European bassist whose work has graced countless recordings over the past 5 decades of jazz! The set's got Niels' bass strongly out in front of the mix – working with guitar and percussion on all tracks, plus additional accompaniment from longtime friends that include Phil Woods, Oscar Peterson, and Monica Zetterlund! Soul singer Monique guests on the track "Summer Song", and other tracks include "Fantasy In D Minor", "O Tysta Ensamhet", "Traces Of The Past", "Just In Time", and "As Is". CD

Horace Tapscott & The Pan Afrikan Peoples ArkestraWhy Don't You Listen – Live At LACMA 1998 ... CD
Dark Tree (France), 1998. New Copy ... $19.99
An amazing record from pianist Horace Tapscott – maybe one of his most ambitious projects ever, and a set that stands head and shoulders next to his classic work for the Nimbus label! As with some of those records, this set features his large Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra – performing live at LACMA in 1998, and also augmented by a vocal choir at times – working with a sense of pride and power that's very much in the best 70s spiritual jazz mode! We honestly didn't know that Tapscott had continued the group this far into the 90s – we've only heard them on record up through the early 80s – and the lineup really represents the maturing vision of the music, with some especially great work from Tapscott on piano, Phil Ranelin on trombone, and Michael Session on soprano, alto, and tenor – plus lead vocals from the mighty Dwight Trible. Titles include "Aiee The Phantom", "Fela Fela", "Listen Africa", "Caravan", and "Why Don't You Listen". CD

VariousChebran Vol 2 – French Boogie 1982 to 1989 ... CD
Born Bad (France), Mid 80s. New Copy ... $8.99
Great grooves from the French scene of the 80s – a time when Parisian musicians were picking up a lot of the electro soul elements from the New York scene, but also mixing them with other currents of European and African dancefloor modes! This set's a bit later than the first volume in the Chebran series, and maybe even more compelling too – as the increased electronic elements in the music make for loads of wonderful touches that are waiting to be rediscovered by a 21st Century audience – the expected beats, keys, and basslines – but also some great ways of electrifying the vocals, especially when the lyrics are more chanted than sung. There's a huge world to discover here – and titles include "Ta Face Preface" by Brigitte & Michot, "Jawla Feli" by Hamidou, "C'Est Tabou" by Marie Jose Fa, "Funky Rap" by Phil BArney, "Lipstick (Shout)" by JM Black, "Ettika (vers maxi inedite)" by Ettika, "Propriete Privee" by Sammy Massamba, "Dansez Le Raksi" by Nordine Staifi, "Cairo Connection" by Philippe Chany, "Qu'Est Ce Qui Ne Va Pas" by Alfio Scandurra, "Break Magic Dance" by Creole Star, "Yamna" by Ganawa, and "La Rage Du Funky (rmx)" by Manu. France Gall1968 ... LP
Philips (France), 1967. Near Mint- ... $39.99
A record as revolutionary as the French year in which it was recorded – an amazing batch of late 60s grooves from Parisian pop madame France Gall! The set's upbeat and jaunty, with plenty of fuzz – almost a psyche pop sound, with lots of groovy guitars that make the album sparkle with plenty of razor-sharp notes! Gall's vocals are as wonderful as ever, and almost sound a bit more sinister in this setting – thanks to arrangements by Alain Gouraguer and the great David Whitaker. There's plenty of France Gall classics here – including versions of the Serge Gainsbourg tunes "Nefertiti" and "Teenie Weenie Boppie" – plus "Toi Que Je Veux", "Made In France", "Bebe Requin", and "Avant La Bagarre". No baby pop here, as France Gall is all-woman throughout – one of the best of the French female pop singers of the mid 60s, working here with an upbeat, groovy sound throughout! Backings are by the great Alain Gouraguer, who gives the record a tightly jerking kind of feel – a sound that's the Paris contribution to the same sort of mod grooves that were coming out of the London scene at the time. The album's filled with classics by Gall, all sung in a sweet voice that's a great contrast to the music – wonderful stuff throughout, with titles that include "Baby Pop", "Cet Air La", "L'Amerique", "Mon Bateau De Nuit", and "Deux Oiseaux". France Gall won the Eurovision song contest with the title track of this one – and for good reason too, given that the tune is totally groovy! The rest of the work here really follows suit – romping, jerking, and grooving in that wonderful mix of mod rhythms that made France's 60s material so great – some of the best of the French pop scene at the time, with a sound that's really a cut above on all the numbers here! Backings are by the mighty Alain Gouraguer, who brings in a hip mix of jazz inflections, rocking rhythms, and some of the more sparkling soundtrack elements bubbling in the French 60s scene – all a perfect accompaniment for Gall's catchy girl pop vocals. ✨✧ Serge GainsbourgHistoire De Melody Nelson ... LP
Philips (France), 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic stuff – and a record that may well be the greatest ever from the mighty Serge Gainsbourg – high praise indeed, considering the greatness of Gainsbourg's other music! The album is one long suite built around a spare, electric bass-driven theme – a slow funk riff that's been sampled countless times over the years, and which has gotten the album continuous play on both sides of the Atlantic for many many years. The mighty Jean-Claude Vannier handles the arrangements, and Serge mutters the lyrics over the top, in a raspy loud whisper – while the funky rhythms dart in and out of odd washes of sound, and unusual eerie sounds. There's a very strong soundtrack feel to the album, as waves of music envelop the lyrics – tripped out in funky beats that have become legendary over the years, thanks to some very famous samples! Titles include "En Melody", "Cargo Culte", "Ballade De Melody Nelson", "Valse De Melody", "Ah! Melody", and "L'Hotel Particulier". LP, Vinyl record album

Philip GlassMusic In Twelve Parts – Live In Paris 1975 ... LP
Transversales Disques (France), 1975. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99
A previously-unreleased French recording of one of the greatest early compositions by Philip Glass – presented here in a recording that also features Glass himself as one of the performers! The group is a sextet – with organ work from Glass, Michael Riseman, Jon Gibson, and Joan LaBarbara – the last of whom also sings in a really beautiful way, in keeping with her reputation – and the group also features alto saxes from Dickie Landry and Richard Peck. The mixture of reeds and organ lines is fantastic – spinning out in these sonic cycles that are completely hypnotic, and which must have been hell to perform as a group together! Titles include parts 1, 2, 3, 11, and 12 from the longer work – and the 2LP set also features an interview with Glass from 1974. LP, Vinyl record album

Guts bills this set as "an Afro-Tropical experiment" – but to us, the album's just a further expansion of his wonderful talents as a producer – which have really come a long way in just a few years! Guts maybe got his start in hip hop, but he's able to embrace a globe's worth of sound, especially in a project like this – which we might liken to some of the more globally-conscious records by Quantic – although Guts is working here on the Parisian scene, and maybe has even closer access to cross-cultural channels! The set includes work by plenty of guests – a lineup that includes Pat Kalla, Pinduca, Nazare Pereira, Emma Lamadji, Kandy Gura, CAtia Werneck, Djeuhdjoah, and others – on titles that include "Voyaging Bird", "Ja Nao Ha Mais Paz", "Li Dous Konsa", "Sa Ce Kado", "Kenke Corner", "Mucagiami", "Penda", and "Matadou". Philippe Mate/Daniel VallancienPhilippe Mate/Daniel Vallancien ... LP
Saravah/Souffle Continu (France), 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $16.99
A fantastic collaboration between two key members of the French avant jazz scene – working here in a spirit that really lives up to the genre-busting legacy of the Saravah Records label! Philippe Mate improvises here on saxophone – but in a unique space that's controlled by Daniel Vallancien – not really a musician himself, but a key force in recording the classic BYG/Actuel avant jazz sessions a few years before – working here in the studio to inflect the performance of Mate with all sorts of effects and studio techniques! The approach isn't nearly as gimmicky as you might expect – and instead, the whole thing is maybe a free jazz nod to some of the more stodgy, academic electro-acoustic sounds from Paris – given a very earthy, organic quality here by the duo. Annie PhilippeSensationnel! – Ye Ye Bonbons 1965 to 1968 ... LP
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Beautifully groovy work from mid 60s France – all by a singer who's every bit as great as France Gall, Francoise Hardy, or other French greats of the time – but not nearly as well known! This cool collection should correct that fact, as it finally gives worldwide exposure to this brilliant material from Annie Philippe – a bold-voiced female singer whose delivery of the songs is superb throughout – augmented by early arrangements from the likes of Jean-Claude Vannier, Paul Mauriat, Christian Gaubert, and others! Almost all the numbers have a romping quality that lives up to the "ye ye" promise of the title – but there's also a vibe that's deeper than throwaway pop, as Philippe manages to bring a lot of punch to the tunes without ever losing her cool – as you'll hear on tunes that include "pas De Taxi", "Pour La Gloire", "Plus Rien", "C'Est La Mode", "On M'A Toujours Dit", "Sensational Jeffry", "J'Ai Rate Mon Bac", "Un Petite Croix", "Le Mannequin", "Bonjour Bonsoir Et Au Revoir", and "J'Ai Tant De Peine". If you've ever been wondering which album to get by Chico Buarque – this is it! The record's a stunning batch of sophisticated sides, done in collaboration with Roberto Menescal, and with help from Jobim and MPB4! The album builds on the style of Buarque's excellent late 60s songwriting, and adds in some of the more complicated approaches to arrangement that were being developed in Brazil at the end of the 60s – in a way that pushes Chico's work to the next level, and which makes this record sit right up there with work at the time by Jobim or Edu Lobo. Fantastic! This is the French pressing of the Michel Legrand score to Jaques Demy's incredible 1965 film The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg. Every word of dialogue in the film is sung, and Legrand came up with an amazing array of themes to carry the emotion of the film. Embedded in here are lines that later became worldwide hits – like "I Will Wait For You" and "Watch What Happens" – but in this version, the songs are just themes in the huge pastiche of dialogue and narrative, and they lurk behind the score in a beautiful way. This is one of our favorite all-time soundtracks, and this French version has a very lovely cover with Catherine Deneuve standing amidst some umbrellas! Beautiful early duets from Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa – much more of a bossa-styled album than any of the late 60s Tropicalia albums from the pair! The set's got a really wonderful sort of feel – bossa at some level, but also with some of the gentle darkness that Caetano and Gal would bring to Brazilian popular music more strongly in the next few years – an approach that's somewhat subtle, but often somewhat different than albums of the generation on labels like Elenco or Forma. The orchestrations are somewhat full, but never too much so – and tracks include a fair bit of early original compositions by Caetano. An excellent set that has the vocal talents of the Swingle Singers backed by the sweet and mellow instrumentation of the Modern Jazz Quartet! Given that John Lewis & Co were essentially local residents in Paris for so many years, it's amazing it took them until 1966 to hook up with Ward Swingle's hip vocal group – but the album's more than worth the wait, as the MJQ really help open things up, and take the Swingles into more complicated territory than before. Motown/Elemental (France), 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $14.99
Why did Motown ever let the Four Tops get away? This album was their last for the label – and it's an excellent one, filled with soul, sweetness, and some of the best arrangements the group had in their later years! The soul component is super-high – with tight group instrumentation that reminds us of the best Philly backing combos of the same time, but leaner too – as Dennis Coffey and Wah Wah Ragin are on guitars, Jack Ashford handles percussion, and Leonard Caston adds some nice funky keyboards. The real talent, though, is the group – and Levi Stubbs is in fine fine form on cuts like "She's An Understanding Woman", "I Am Your Man", "If You Let Me", "Nature Planned It", "Walk With Me, Talk With Me Darling", and "Happy (Is A Bumpy Road)". A really cool set that looks at the rise of late 50s beatnik culture from a variety of different styles – not just the jazz and poetry that marked that scene's biggest contribution to music – but also the wealth of modes that inspired those years too! The 3CD package features a stunning 57 titles in all – and begins in the late 30s with hard-edged small combo work and jive-heavy vocal tracks – then runs past WWII to include some bebop, R&B, and very cool vocal numbers – before moving into Greenwich Village classic sounds in a mix of spoken word, jazz poetry, and even a bit of folk! Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1930s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 29.99
Famous songs from French films – served up here in a massive 3CD set that combines the biggest moments from both pre and postwar cinema! These songs are mostly vocal numbers, not instrumental themes – which makes the package a bit different than other soundtrack collections, and which also ties the evolution of cinema in France to the evolution of chanson – huge transformations that happen in a really short space – and which take place in terms of style, mood, meaning, and method! Material of the 30s tends to be a bit more sentimental or romantic, the middle period shows a mixture of modern moments with more traditional ones, and things really take off in the 50s – as bits of jazz and other styles come into the mix. 60 tracks in all, with notes in French and English – and work by Charles Trenet, Colette Mars, Suzy Delair, Brigitte Bardot, Georges Brassens, Edith Piaf, Jeanne Moreau, Arletty, Jacques Pills, Martine Carol, Juliette Greco, Henri Garat, Jean Mumiere, Fernandel, Tino Rossi, Yves Montand, Lucien Jeunesse, Philippe Clay, Mouloudji, Magali Noel, Corinne Marchand, Hildegard Neff, and many others. It's Wu-Tang's world, and we just live in it – as we're reminded again by this great series of older funky cuts sampled by the group! As with other volumes, most of these numbers emerged at some point or another in Wu-Tang and related productions – but this set presents the full original songs, unmixed – a pretty damn great blend of 70s funky soul on its own, even if you've never had an ear for hip hop! Artists are a great mix of soul stars and underground legends – and titles include "What The World Needs Now" by Carla Thomas, "I Get High" by Freda Payne, "Get Myself High" by The Dynamics, "That's All Right With Me" by Esther Phillips, "Intimate Friends" by Eddie Kendricks, "Ain't Got The Love Of One Girl" by The Ambassadors, "Girls Can't Do What The Guys Do" by Betty Wright, "Our Generation" by Ernie Hines, "I'm Your Mechanical Man" by Jerry Butler, "Have Mercy On Me" by East St Louis Gospelettes, "Here I Go Again" by Jean Plum, "Let's Do It Again" by Staple Singers, "Only One Can Win" by The Sylvers, "Don't Make The Good Girls Go Bad" by Della Humphrey, "Dead" by Carolyn Sullivan, "Trouble" by Brenton Wood, "Float On (single edit)" by Floaters, "I Wish You Were Here" by Al Green, and "A Good Man Is Gone" by Monk Higgins & Alex Brown. ✨✧ Steve ReichFour Organs/Phase Patterns ... LP
Standard (France), 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Brilliant minimal work from Steve Reich – pre-fame performances that really get to the core of minimalist composition from the start of the movement – played by a hip small group of musicians that includes Reich, Steve Chambers, Art Murphy, and Philip Glass! "Four Organs" is a wonderful combination of the instruments mentioned in the title – coming together with a cool drone-building quality, and driven by some very slight, soft rhythms on maracas – very cool, and relatively spare – but with a compelling sound that definitely shows that Reich and his contemporaries were onto a whole new groove. "Phase Patterns" has organs again - and is a slow, subtle exploration of Reich's early ideas on patterns of phase shifting – delivered here in a spare, stark, simple way that really hooks you into his musical ideas, in ways that some of the larger concept records sometimes fail to do. ✨✧ Randy JohnstonIn A-Chord ... CD
Muse, 1994. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The title's a bit hokey, and the cover is too – but the record's a really great batch of tenor, organ, and guitar lines – served up with guitarist Randy Johnston at the helm, and featuring great contributions from Eric Alexander and Joey DeFrancesco! Drummer Mickey Roker completes the quartet – kicking things along with his classic sound – and Joey's strong ability to handle basslines with the organ gives the record a nice rumbling feel up from the bottom. Alexander's tenor is perhaps a bit less pointed than on other albums of the 90s, but his presence is always a welcome one – and titles include "Minor Mystery", "Sunday In New York", "The Philadelphians", "Wonder Why", and "Blues For The New One". ✨✧ Third Coast Ensemble (Rob Mazurek)Wrecks ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An incredible feather in the already-large hat of Rob Mazurek – work that more than lives up to some of his boldest visions on previous recordings, but does so in a completely new direction! The album features a set of larger-form compositions all put together by Rob – in ways that show a remarkable ear for mature colors and concepts – handled by players who are both from the third coast of the Chicago scene, and from Brest in France – where all the music here came together! Even if you already know and love Mazurek's other music, there's something very different and special here – as Rob's cornet and direction shape the sound of a lineup that features incredible performances from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Christiphe Rocher on clarinets, Jeff Parker on guitar, Lou Malozzi on electronics, Steve Berry on trombone, Christofer Bjurstrom on piano, Philippe Champion on trumpet, Tomeka Reid on cello, Nicolas Peoc'H on alto and soprano sax, Irvin Pierce on tenor, and Avreeayl Ra on drums. There's also some beautiful texts penned by Alexandre Pierrepont and background voice from Yannick Leblay – and while the idea of such trans-Atlantic avant jazz collaboration is nothing new, there's a very special, very unique quality to this set – almost as if the players had been working together for many years to realize Rob's vision. Titles include "Under The Hearts Snow", "The Game Circle", "Wild Gale", "On The Trapeze Of Minds Ferns", "Cobalt Of Chance", "This Is The Atoll", and "Drinkable Gold With Shadows' Liquor". CD

✨✧ VariousToujours Chic – More French Girl Singers Of The 1960s (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Incredible female pop from 60s France – not weepy ballads or old school Paris numbers, but the kind of hip-snapping, all-groovy material that made the 60s French scene so great! Loads of these tracks are new to our ears (and we love French grooves a lot!) – and this volume of the series seems to dig even deeper than before – through a range of rare 7" EP material and singles, to come up with some killer tracks that will move way beyond the bigger cuts you might know from Francoise Hardy or Brigitte Bardot. The production and instrumentation is superb throughout – often with these funky currents that make these tracks feel years ahead of their time – and as usual with Ace, the whole presentation is great – from ultra-clear sound through full notes on the music too. Titles include "Rouge Rouge" by Christie Laume, "Pour La Gloire" by Annie Philippe, "Demain" by Zouzou, "Cours Si Tu As Peur" by Fabienne, "A La Fin De La Soiree" by Sheila, "Cette Nuit" by Pussycat, "Angel Of Sin" by Charlotte Walters, "Les Prisons De Sa Majeste" by Delphine, and "Le Nenuphar" by Stone.
