✨✧ Lee MorganLive At The Lighthouse (3CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1970. Used 3CD ... Out Of Stock
An incredible album from Lee Morgan – one of his last records ever, and a set that shows a whole new promise in his music – one that was sadly unfulfilled as a result of his tragic early death. The songs hare are all quite long – stretched out live numbers, but never in a way that's overindulgent (especially in comparison to some of Lee's Blue Note contemporaries) – and put together with a level of creativity and imagination that's simply stunning! Lee's in a beautifully searching mode here – stretching out on his solos, and hitting spaces we never would have imagined in his work even a few short years before. The rest of the group's great too – and include Bennie Maupin on flute, tenor, and bass clarinet, Harold Mabern on piano, Jymie Merritt on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums. Titles include "The Beehive", "Neophilia", "Nommo", and "Absolutions". Plus, this 3CD set features triple the amount of material on the original set – which was already an extended one – 8 more bonus cuts that include "Aon", "Yunjanna", "416 East 10th Street", "I Remember Britt", and "Peyote". CD
(Out of print 3CD version, slipcover has some wear and is priced accordingly.)

✨✧ Horace Tapscott & The Pan Afrikan Peoples ArkestraCall ... CD
Nimbus, 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Large-group genius from the legendary Horace Tapscott – one of the few recordings of his groundbreaking Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra! The music here is totally righteous right from the start – even more searching and soaring than Tapscott's trio or solo work – thanks to help from some of the hippest, most spiritual players on the LA scene of the late 70s – a lineup you'll recognize from other Nimbus Records sessions, all working together beautifully to realize the unique vision of Horace! Tracks are long, and feature Tapscott on piano, Jesse Sharps on saxes, Adele Sebastian on flute and vocals, Herbert Callies on alto, James Andrews on tenor, Lester Robertson on trombone, Kafi Larry Roberts on soprano, and Linda Hill on additional piano – all working together perfectly as a unified ensemble. There's a strong Strata East vibe to the whole record – and titles include "The Call", "Nakatini Suite", "Quagmire Manor At Five AM", and "Peyote Song III". CD

✨✧ Lee MorganLee Morgan Live At The Lighthouse 1970 ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), 1970. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A 2CD collection that features some incredible live work from one of Lee Morgan's greatest years! The title says "Lighthouse", but there's actually some discussion that the material may be from a live set recorded in San Francisco slightly before the famous Live At The Lighthouse album – a detail that seems to be supported by the differences in the tracks from some of the Blue Note Lighthouse material. The feel here is looser than some of Lee's studio work of the time – freely soulful, but never too outside – in an exploratory style that would have marked him one of the greatest trumpet voices of the 70s (next to Miles, Freddie Hubbard, and Woody Shaw) – had he not met an untimely death in 1972. The group features Bennie Maupin on saxes, Harold Mabern on piano, Jymie Merritt on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums – and titles include "Peyote", "Ceora", "Speedball", "Meofelia", "Rakin & Scrapin", "Unjanna", "Something Like This", and "Willow Weep For Me". ✨✧ Lee MorganLive Sessions (aka All That Jazz) ... LP
Trip, 1970. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Rare material from Lee Morgan's final run at the Lighthouse – home to some of his most soulful dates in later years! The tracks here are all nice and long – every bit as much so as material recorded for his Blue Note album at the same club – and the group is the same too, with Benny Maupin on tenor, Harold Mabern on piano, Jymie Merritt on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums – a really wonderful lineup that makes Morgan soar with a near-spiritual sort of energy. The tunes unfold slowly, with lots of freedom – especially on the solos from Morgan, Maupin, and Mabern – and titles include "Ujamma", "Ceora", "Peyote", "Willow Weep For Me", and "Speedball". ✨✧ VariousFreedom, Rhythm, & Sound – Revolutionary Jazz 1963 to 1982 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1960s/1970s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Revolutionary jazz from the era of the Civil Rights Movement and beyond – soulful and spiritual jazz as important as any of the era – an impeccably well chosen compilation of Freedom, Rhythm & Sound from Soul Jazz Records! The set is a tie-in with Soul Jazz's essential Freedom, Rhythm & Sound book – documenting the sounds and providing an aural portrait of a fertile creative period in African American music and cultural history – when the societal struggles were a counterpart to the heretofore unseen depth of creativity and empowerment in jazz music. Includes a nice booklet of notes, and songs from both the independent underground, and some that made it onto established labels like Verve and others, and material by Joe Henderson, Archie Shepp, Errol Parker, Mary Lou Williams, Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Horace Tapscott, Sun Ra and many more. 23 pivotal tracks on 2CDs, many running on the longer side, for a straight up incredible set of spiritual soul jazz: includes "Africa" by Oliver Lake/NTU, "Space A Nova" by Stanton Davis' Ghetto/Mysticism, "Miss DD" by Mary Lou Williams, "Old Time Religion" by Art Ensemble Of Chicago, "Drinking Song" by Gary Bartz NTU Troop, "Attica Blues" by Archie Shepp, "Peyote Song No III" by Horace Tapscott & Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, "Freedom Time" by Pharoahs, "Black Survival" by Roy Brooks & Artistic Truth and more. ✨✧ Leo Nichols (Ennio Morricone)Navajo Joe ... LP
United Artists, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A western soundtrack, but an unusual one – filled with highly percussive numbers that echo the "Navajo Joe" theme – and which step out with a proud, dramatic feel that's also got some darker echoes! There's a really weird quality to some of the best numbers – which use voices in a way that's probably supposed to echo with Native American identity, but which has more of an Omen feel overall – and some of the more orchestral passages also have really great dark-tuned string parts, almost in an atonal Italian 70s mode. But this is no surprise when you realize that Leo Nichols is actually Ennio Morricone working under another name – and had penned this score during his formative 60s yers! Titles include "Peyote Saloon", "To Esperanza", "But Joe Say No", "Raw Hides & Dead Hides", "Healing The Wound", and "Goodbye To Brother Jeffery". LP, Vinyl record album
