Peter Franks GroupDays Ahead ... LP
Futuristica (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $26.99 29.99
A very cool blend of live jazz instrumentation and beats – served up here with contributions from some mighty hip players on the British scene! Peter Franks plays live drums and adds in loops, basslines, and keyboards – but the soloists are what really make the album great – as the set features tenor from Nat Birchall on two tracks, plus harp from Amanda Whiting, flute from Rachel Crennell, and keyboards from Marc Rapson and Robert Mitchell. The two part "Creativity" features a hip spoken passage from Gordon Wedderburn, and the rest of the set is instrumental – with titles that include "Days Ahead", "Alone Together", "From The Heart", "Dream In Colour", "Train To Kyoto", and "Were You Ever Here". Chick CoreaSeptet ... LP
ECM, 1985. Near Mint- ... $7.99
A beautiful bit of "serious" music from Chick Corea – a standout set from the 80s, penned for piano, string quartet, flute, and French Horn – yet handled with a sense of color and tone that's quite different than any sort of staid chamber music might sound! Chick's opening up all these great acoustic waves of sound here – music that pulsates with an inherent sense of rhythm, but also has none of the rhythmic conventions of jazz – just this wonderful interplay between Corea's piano, the flute of Steve Kujala, French Horn of Peter Gordon, and the lineup of two violins, viola, and cello! The core of the record is the five movement "Septet" – and the set also features "The Temple Of Isfahan". LP, Vinyl record album

Georgie FameTwo Faces Of Fame – The Complete 1967 Recordings (stereo/mono – with bonus tracks) ... CD
CBS/RPM (UK), 1967. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99 16.99
The two faces of Fame are live and studio – as each side of the original album was recorded in each mode – and this great CD version goes a lot further, with stereo and mono mixes and a huge number of bonus tracks! The live numbers feature the Brit jazz vocalist swinging in a set recorded in early 1967 – done with lots of Hammond organ in the lineup, and an overall style that picks up a lot from Ray Charles and Mose Allison, but filters it through the groovier beat group styles of 60s London. The studio numbers are even better, and feature Georgie singing in more of a jazz-based mode – with lineups that feature some striking players that include Tony Oxley, Peter King, Gordon Beck, and Tubby Hayes. Tracks include a wonderful take on Mongo Santamaria's "El Pussycat", plus the tunes "Do It The Hard Way", "It Could Happen To You", "C'Est La Vie", "River's Invitation", "Greenback Dollar Bill", and "Keep Your Big Mouth Shut". Disc 1 also features 13 bonus tracks from singles and EPs released in 1967 – and disc 2 is completed by 11 MORE bonus tracks – 6 released for the first time ever, including "Jumpin The Gun", "Respoken", "Fool's Paradise" and "Conquistador". ✨✧ Richard KingTravels Over Feeling – Arthur Russell, A Life ... Book
Mexican Summer/Anthology Editions, 2024. New Copy ... $34.99 50.00
A really beautiful portrait of a really beautiful musician – the late great Arthur Russell, a New York talent whose groundbreaking work touched so many different scenes in the 80s, before he was taken away from our planet all too soon! Russell's music has lived on and flourished in recent decades, thanks to reissue and archive projects that have brought forth even more sounds than were issued during his life – and this book serves as a great complement to those releases, as it presents a portrait of Arthur in ways that are nicely different than a standard biography. Richard King fills the book with page after page of photos, music scores, documents, artwork, and other elements that provide very vivid examples of the way that Russell would not only create, but also interact with others – a quality that's echoed here in an array of voices that King allows to speak on the man himself – so that pages of images are juxtaposed with comments and reflections from friends and contemporaries like Peter Gordon, Philip Glass, Phill Niblock, and Lucy Sante. The hardcover edition is almost 300 pages in length, and is filled with images throughout! Book

Moondog & The London SaxophonicSax Pax For A Sax ... CD
Atlantic, 1994. Used ... $9.99
One of the most dynamic Moondog records we've ever heard – a set that's heavy on saxophone instrumentation, played here by the London Saxophonic ensemble! Saxes handle as much of the rhythms here as they do the melodies – although well recorded and solidly-structured, the tunes still have some of the naive charm of Moondog's early work – kind of an evolution of those earthy inspirations into the fuller sound of a range of saxes. There's also vocals on some numbers – sung by Peter Hammill, Andrew Davis, Stuart Gordon, and others – and titles include "Dog Trot", "Paris", "Bird's Lament", "Fiesta", "Sea Horse", "D Is For Danny", "Shakespeare City", "EEC Suite", and "Mother's Whistler". ✨✧ Shelly Manne & His MenSon Of Gunn!! ... LP
Contemporary, 1959. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A crackling set of crime jazz from drummer Shelly Manne – a follow-up to his first set of work from the Peter Gunn soundtrack, and arguably even better than the first! Manne's working here with a great combo that includes Victor Feldman on vibes, Joe Gordon on trumpet, and Richie Kamuca on tenor – playing with a warmly raspy tone that gives the work a quality that's even more soulful than the Henry Mancini originals that inspired the set, and which is perfectly matched with the trumpet of Joe Gordon. There's a depth here that goes way beyond the simple soundtrack roots of the material – and the arrangements on the set are proof that Manne was one of the hippest-thinking jazz cats on the mainstream LA scene of the time. Titles include "Spook", "Joanna", "Walkin Bass", "Blues For Mothers", "Odd Ball", "Blue Steel", and "Goofin At The Coffee House". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Barney WilenLive In Tokyo 1991 ... CD
Elemental, 1991. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Marvelous late work from tenorist Barney Wilen – the French reedman who first rose to fame in the late 50s, with crucial recordings with Miles Davis and Art Blakey – then really faded from view for most of the next few decades, before making a fantastic late life comeback, with a sound that was even better than before! We love all of the later Barney Wilen records a great deal, but we especially love his work in a live setting – as over the years, Wilen developed this tremendous ability to really stretch out on a solo, and still remain creative – hitting a level that matches the talents of tenor giants like Dexter Gordon or Johnny Griffin, save for the fact that Barney could also play soprano sax, which he does here, in addition to some of the tenor tunes. The group's a tight quartet – with superb work from pianist Olivier Hutman, who also plays some electric piano in addition to acoustic, plus Gilles Naturel on bass and Peter Gritz on drums. All material is issued here for the first time ever – and titles include "Beautiful Love", "L'Ame Des Poetes", "Little Lu", "Mon Blouson", "Besame Mucho", "Goodbye", "No Problem", "Latin Alley", "Bass Blues", "Doxy", "Old Folks", and "How Deep Is The Ocean". A cool set from a percussionist who was both a figure in the more cutting-edge side of the New York downtown scene of the early 80s – and who had done some work for bigger groups as well! The album's one of the few under Van Tieghem's name – and features the artist on a huge amount of percussion instruments, both electric and acoustic – plus keyboards and a variety of objects. Peter Gordon co-produced, and plays saxes on the set – and the record's a nice one in the same territory of Laurie Anderson and David Byrne experiments on early 80s Warner. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lee Perry & The UpsettersBuild The Ark (3LP set – 180 gram pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Mid 70s. New Copy 3LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Groundbreaking 70s work from Lee Scratch Perry – served up here with both work from The Upsetters, and a long list of "friends" – different singers who take the lead on some of the productions, which are then presented back to back with dub versions of the tracks that overflow with great contributions from a top-shelf lineup of musicians! Players on the cuts include Willie Lindo and Ernest Ranglin on guitars, Winston Wright on organ, Vin Gordon on trombone, and Richard Dirty Harry Hall on tenor – but the real talent here is clearly that of Perry, who's able to move between soulful vocal leads and some deeper, darker Black Ark sounds on the rhythms. Titles include "Mr Money Man" by Danny Hensworth, "Brother Noah" by The Shadows, "Traveling" by Debra Keese, "Ethiopian Land" by Peter & Paul Lewis, "Land Of Love" by Sons Of Light, "Peace & Love" by Shaumark & Robinson, "Freedom Street" by Eric Donaldson, "My Little Sandra" by Leo Graham, "Long Long Time" by Winston Heywood, "White Belly Rat" by Lee Perry, "A Wah Dat" by Junior Dread, and "Feelings" by Sharon Isaacs – and the set features dub versions of every cut by The Upsetters too! Contemporary, 1960. Very Good+ ... $18.99
A stunning hardbop set from drummer Shelly Manne – a player most folks associate with more arranged jazz, or cooler modes of the LA scene of the 50s – but a player who was already starting to open up and forge new roads by the end of that decade! Shelly became a surprising proponent of hardbop modes with a few key records like this – and the live setting has Manne leading a great group with really searing solo work that's very different than west coast cool jazz modes normally associated with both the drummer and the Contemporary label! ✨✧ Art BlakeyBlakey (plus Introducing Joe Gordon) ... CD
Verve/Mercury, 1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic hard bop reissue! This CD combines two rare early sessions by Art Blakey – one recorded under his name, the other under the leadership of trumpeter Joe Gordon, a fantastic player who died an early death, and never got to record as much as he should have. Both albums were only ever issued on rare 10" LPs during the mid 50s, and they're combined here with great sound, great notes, and two bonus tracks. The set's over 70 minutes in length, and every cut crackles with a sinister intensity that's just fantastic – made all the more special by a host of original compositions by both Gordon and Gigi Gryce, who arranged one of the session. One session features Gordon on trumpet, Gigi Gryce on alto, and Walter Bishop on piano; the other features Gordon, Charlie Rouse, and Junior Mance – and Blakey is on drums throughout. Titles include "Evening Lights", "Rifftide", "Lady Bob", "Eleanor", "Minority", "Hello", "Mayreh", and "Futurity". CD

✨✧ Joe Gordon & Scott LaFaroWest Coast Days – Live At The Lighthouse ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), 1958/1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent document of two key players on the west coast scene of the late 50s – both of whom passed away at too far young an age! Trumpeter Joe Gordon was one of the most soulful players on the LA scene of the period – almost a Lee Morgan in his sense of timing and space – and Scott LaFaro was hailed by many as one of the most revolutionary talents on the bass at the time, and had a huge influence on the scenes on both coasts, despite his few short years in the jazz business. The set features LaFaro working with Shelly Manne's group that included Joe Gordon, Richie Kamuca, and Russ Freeman – in a long, open, and exploratory approach to jazz – one that's very similar to the excellent live recordings made by the Manne group at The Blackhawk. Kamuca's tenor work is extremely imaginative on the album's longer tracks – at a level that's far far different than most of his LA work of the 50s – and Gordon's solos are a delight throughout, with a voice that is heard here as strongly as on any of his few recordings. The set features 3 long tracks – "Summertime", "Poinciana", and "Our Delight", which is offered in an incomplete take. Plus, the session also features a quartet recording of "It Could Happen To You" by a group with Kamuca, LaFaro, Victor Feldman, and Stan Levey – from 1958. CD

Jazz City/Fresh Sound (Spain), Early 1950s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really great collection of an under-documented side of the career of trumpeter Maynard Ferguson – early singles recorded for Capitol and Mercury Records, done at a time when he was with the Stan Kenton band, but really stepping out as a leader! The format here is almost similar to that of the Kenton group at the time – with tunes that are all-out swinging one moment, then more laidback and concerned with color and tone the next. Many of the players are similar too – and include Shorty Rogers, Milt Bernhart, John Graas, Bob Cooper, Shelly Manne, Bud Shank, Bob Gordon, and Art Pepper. 4 tracks are from sessions that have Ferguson's group backing singer Kay Brown – and the rest are instrumental outings with varying lineups, featuring arrangements by Willie Maiden, Pete Rugolo, Shorty Rogers, and Joe Roland. Titles include "Band Ain't Draggin", "Short Wave", "What's New", "The Hot Canary", "Roses All The Way", "And So I Waited Around", "Wow", and "Willie Nillie". CD

A week's worth of work by Wynton Marsalis – tracks recorded over 7 different nights at the Village Vanguard, featuring the star trumpeter working with three different bands! Most of the lineup here is relatively similar – Wes Anderson on alto and soprano, and Wycliffe Gordon on trombone appear in all 3 groups – but tenor is handled by either Victor Goines or Todd Williams on some dates, and piano is by Eric Reed or Marcus Roberts. There's a nicely loose feel to some of the tracks – shaking past some of the stiffness or seriousness that can sometimes mar Marsalis albums – and the CD features 12 titles from the larger box set, with titles that include "Welcome", "The Cat In The Hat Is Back", "Misterioso", "Juba & O'Brown Squaw", "Local Announcements", and "I'll Remember April". Vertigo/Mr Bongo (UK), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the heaviest electric sets from UK trumpeter Ian Carr – and that's really saying a lot, given how much heavy work he cut with his group Nucleus! The sound here is a groundbreaking mix of acoustic horns and keyboards – trumpet from Carr, and a mix of tenor, soprano, alto, and flute from Brian Smith – coming into contact with the Fender Rhodes of Dave MacRae and the Hohner electric of Gordon Beck! The pairing of keys is wonderful – and the whole thing is sewn together by the guitar of a young Allan Holdsworth, who's very much in the sway of Carr's sound here, instead of the later directions he'd take as a leader. The set might be worth it alone for the massive "Summer Rain" – a slow funk track that trips along beautifully – but the whole thing's great, and other titles include "Belladonna", "Mayday", "Suspension", and "Hector's House". Two jazz rock classics – back to back as a 2CD set! Solar Plexus was a pivotal album in the career of British jazzman Ian Carr – one that had him really opening up into some trippy, spacey grooves – adding in a lot of keyboards, kicking up the grooves, yet still never losing the strong jazzy finish that was the best part of his earlier work. Players on the set include trumpeters Harry Beckett and Kenny Wheeler, guitarist Chris Spedding, and keyboardist Karl Jekins, who really throws in some groovy lines on the set! Vertigo/BGO (UK), 1971/1972. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Elements 1 & 2", "Snakehips Dream", "Torso", "Spirit Level", and "Bedrock Deadlock". Belladonna is one of the heaviest electric sets from UK trumpeter Ian Carr – and that's really saying a lot, given how much heavy work he cut with his group Nucleus! Joe GordonLookin' Good! ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1961. Used ... $19.99
An incredible session of hardbop from early 60s LA – easily one of the hippest and hardest-hitting albums ever recorded for Contemporary Records! Joe Gordon passed away early in 1963, and this album's one of a rare few he made as a leader – but even if it was the only one, it might well be enough – because the trumpeter steps out here with an intensity and sense of imagination that easily matches the best sounds of Lee Morgan or Ted Curson during the time, often with the similar mix of modernism and grooving as the latter! The session's a quintet one – and is equally noteworthy for the presence of alto saxophonist Jimmy Woods – heard here in a mode that's a bit more straightforward than some of his own few albums, but in a way that really sets a nice edge to the whole set. Rhythm is from the trio of Dick Whittington on piano, Milt Turner on drums, and the great Jimmy Bond on bass – and they all work with the kind of complicated twists and turns you might expect from some of Blue Note's best rhythm combos of the time. Titles include "Terra Firma Irma", "Song For Richard", "Diminishing", and "Heleen" – all original tunes! CD
(Out of print OJC pressing – in nice shape!)

Karin Krog & Dexter GordonSome Other Spring – Blues & Ballads ... CD
Sonet/Baybridge (Japan), 1970. Used ... $16.99
The icy voice of Norwegian singer Karin Krog is a perfect match for Dexter's deep soulful saxophone, and the two of them perform wonderfully together in this rare set of tracks recorded in 1970 with Kenny Drew on piano and Niel Henning Orsted-Peterson on bass. Krog has always been tremendously respectful of the players that she records with, and unlike other jazz vocal recordings, where the soloists take back seat to the singer, her recordings have them coming out front, and really sharing the spotlight – both in solo space, and in the interplay between the singer and musicians. Tracks include "Blue Eyes", "How Insensitive", "Some Other Spring", "Blue Monk", and her "Tribute To Jimmy Scott". CD
(1999 Japanese pressing – includes obi.)

✨✧ Dizzy GillespieWorld Statesman ... LP
Verve, 1956. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A real gem from the height of Dizzy's big band years at Verve – a stunning little set that features a hip larger group that includes Joe Gordon, Melba Liston, Rod Leavitt, Phil Woods, Ernie Wilkins, and Billy Mitchell. The groove here is well-orchestrated, well-placed soul – with less of the playful bop touches of earlier sides, and more of a hiply modern style that shows Dizzy stretching out in larger shades of color and tone. And while the "World Statesmen" cover and image might make you wary of some gimmick on the set, the album's key Gillespie through and through – a deft turn away from the styles of the bop years, into a world of sound that would support his career strongly for years to come! Titles include "Tour De Force", "Doodlin", "Night In Tunisia", "The Champ", "My Reverie", and "Dizzy's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
