Harold BuddPavilion Of Dreams ... LP
Obscure/Superior Viaduct, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 29.98
One of the earliest albums ever from Harold Budd – an artist who'd later rise to great ambient fame in the following decade, but who's maybe at his most sophisticated here! The set has all the hallmark of the new musical experiments that Brian Eno was showcasing on his Obscure Music label – where the set first appeared – and Budd plays electric piano with a very cool set of contemporary musicians – a lineup that includes alto sax from Marion Brown, harp from Maggie Thomas, marimba from Michael Nyman and John White, and glockenspiel from Gavin Bryars. Brian Eno produced the record, and vocalizes slightly – and tracks have a long-spun, almost spiritual vibe – on titles that include "Bismallahi Rrahmani Rrahmani", "Two Songs (Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord/Butterfly Sunday)", "Madrigals Of The Rose Angel", and "Juno". ✨✧ Neil YoungDorothy Chandler Pavilion 1971 ... LP
Reprise, 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An excellent recording from the Neil Young archives – solo and acoustic at LA's Dorothy Chandler Pavilion from February 1971 – focused, forthright and in near perfect voice!. Neil alternates between guitar and piano on this one, with some harmonica, and with clear forethought in getting these great songs over in a big sounding way despite being all alone on stage. Includes "On The Way Home", "Tell Me Why", "Old Man", "Love In Mind", "I Am A Child", "The Needle And The Damage Done", "See The Sky About To Rain", "Journey Through The Past", "Down By The River and more. Includes "On The Way Home", "Tell Me Why", "Old Man", Cowgirl In The Sand", "Sugar Mountain", "Ohio", "Don't Let It Bring You Down", "Sugar Mountain", "I Am A Child", "A Main Needs A Maid", "Heart Of Hold", "Dance Dance Dance" and more. ✨✧ VariousComplete Obscure Records Collection (10CD set) ... CD
Obscure/Dialogo (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy 10CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive tribute to this groundbreaking, genre-busting label – a short-lived imprint on Island Records that was put together by Brian Eno in the mid 70s – all to showcase some of the best new experiments in avant classical and minimalist music! There's a special sort of quality to these records – work that maybe has a bit more "heart" than some of the colder, more academic work of the period – even in comparison to some of the other records issued by some of these artists – warmer and more personal than the productions of Cramps or CRI, for example – and always seeming to have that special sort of sonic brilliance that Eno brought to his own music of the time! The label only issued ten full records, but that makes for a very unified vibe for the entire catalog – which is collected here with a huge booklet of notes inside the box set. Albums include The Sinking Of The Titanic by Gavin Bryars, Voices & Instrumentals by Jan Steele & John Cage, Irma by Tom Phillips, Pavilion Of Dreams by Harold Budd, Decay Music by Michael Nyman, Discreet Music by Brian Eno, New & Rediscovered Musical Instruments by Max Eastley & David Toop, Music From The Penguin Cafe by Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Machine Music by John White & Gavin Bryars, and Ensemble Pieces by Christopher Hobbs, John Adams, & Gavin Bryars. ✨✧ VariousCold Waves Of Color Vol 5 ... CD
Color Tapes/Lion, Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The cold waves of color keep on coming – reminding us again and again that there's still so much more to discover from the early 80s underground! As with previous volumes, the focus here is on electronic work that's way different than mainstream pop of the period – often forged out of the same instrumentation as the hits, but in a much more stripped-down way – with lots of dark and moody corners that really keep things interesting! Much of this music got no circulation at the time, which is why this series is so crucial – and even if you know some of the more obscure Sheffield or Manchester material from the post-punk generation, you'll probably still find plenty to discover here. Titles include "Transit 6" by Silicon Valley, "Pavilion" by Lives Of Angels, "Production Line" by The Lord, "Silent Sky" by Echo Phase, "August Haze" by Berserk In A Hayfield, and "Isotope" by Void. (LP box has a tiny bump on two corners, and is priced accordingly – still is fantastic overall.)
