Old & NewDreams (DonCherry/DeweyRedman/CharlieHaden/EdBlackwell) —
Old & NewDreams (ECM) ... LP ECM, 1979. Near Mint- ...
Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest groups of the second generation of ECM – a post-Ornette Coleman quartet that features DonCherry, DeweyRedman, CharlieHaden, and EdBlackwell – all exploring space in a way that's quite different than their work with Ornette! The sound here is much freer, and atmospheric – in keeping with Cherry's work of the 70s, and the overall ECM sound of the time – and although unified, there's less of an emphasis on group dynamics than in the Coleman years, and more of a recognition of the role of the individual. Titles include unique reworkings of Ornette's "Lonely Woman" and "Open Or Close" – plus Blackwell's "Togo", Cherry's "Guinea", Redman's "Orbit Of La-Ba", and CharlieHaden's "Song For The Whales". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover looks great, with just a tiny corner bend.)

DonCherry/DeweyRedman/EdBlackwell/CharlieHaden —
Old & NewDreams ... CD ECM, 1977. Used ...
Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first album from this key group of Ornette Coleman alums – an all-star combo that features work from DonCherry on pocket trumpet, DeweyRedman on tenor, CharlieHaden on bass, and EdBlackwell on drums! The sound here is quite Ornette-inspired at times – with a definite late 70s harmelodic groove – but given the organic, acoustic nature of the lineup, the sound is almost more faithful to Coleman's vision than Ornette's records of the time. Haden and Blackwell are great together, as always – driving the tunes with a rhythmic force that Cherry and Redman can't help but carry through. Titles include "Handwoven", "Dewey's Tune", "Chairman Mao", "Next To The Quiet Stream", "Augmented", and "Old & NewDreams". CD

DonCherry/DeweyRedman/CharlieHaden/EdBlackwell —
Tribute To Blackwell ... LP Black Saint (Italy), 1990. New Copy (reissue)...
$24.9926.99
A tribute to EdBlackwell, and one that features the legendary drummer himself – as part of the excellent Old & NewDreams from the 80s! The work was recorded during a Blackwell tribute festival in 1987 – and the group features DonCherry on trumpet, DeweyRedman on tenor, and CharlieHaden on bass – all players who, like Blackwell, worked with Ornette Coleman – coming across here with a sharp-edged sound that has lots of Coleman-like touches! There's no piano in the group, and the rhythms are very forceful – almost a bolder presence than usual from Blackwell, which really drives the horns along nicely. Titles include versions of Coleman's "Happy House", "Law Years", and "Street Woman" – plus "Togo" and "Dewey's Tune". LP, Vinyl record album

Old & NewDreams —
Playing ... LP ECM, 1981. Near Mint- ...
Temporarily Out Of Stock
Second ECM recording of Ornette Coleman alums, once again playing a handful of newer tunes as well as Coleman repertoire. DonCherry's on trumpet and piano, DeweyRedman on tenor sax & musette, CharlieHaden on bass and EdBlackwell on drums. While Coleman was delving into full-on electric ensemble playing with Prime Time at the time of this recording, this group maintains the spirit of the original harmelodic quartet. 6 tracks in all: "HappyHouse", "Mopti", "New Dream", "Rushour", "Broken Shadows" and "Playing". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing.)
