✨✧ Mystic Moods OrchestraTouch (aka Highway One) ... LP
Soundbird, 1972. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A sublime easy classic by The Mystic Moods – who by this time had transformed from a simple "sound effects plus easy listening" group into a sexy electric LA combo. This is one of their first albums for Warner, recorded with a nice sly slightly-funky sound – and it's a captivating batch of sexy easy tracks that have a nice groove bubbling underneath. Cuts include "Electric Music and The Summer People", "Reason For Staying", "My Love, My Life", and "Crystal Morning". Lots of watery sound effects too! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 70s pressing in a standard non-die cut cover, with a cutout hole, peeled spot from price sticker removal, and some heavy wear at the bottom corners.)

✨✧ Roy AyersVirgin Ubiquity II – Unreleased Recordings 1976 to 1981 (3LP set) ... LP
Rapster/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $34.99 39.99
The genius of Roy Ayers knows no end – and as this set of unreleased work from the 70s proves, Roy was always working at top form back in the day – even above and beyond his classic albums from the time! The grooves here are tremendous – funky, soulful, jazzy, and every bit as wonderful as the work that Roy did for his classic albums on Polydor – and in a way, the whole set's even tighter and heavier than any of Roy's full LPs, because it's a distillation of his sound from the time, hand-picked from the vaults with an ear towards the kind of timeless grooves that have been a huge influence on many worlds of music for years! You've never heard any of these tunes before, but we can promise you'll love them every bit as much as Roy's tracks on albums like Coffy, Vibrations, Mystic Voyage, and other classics – and the quality of the set only further pushes our jaw-dropping respect for the man! Titles include "Holiday", "Kwajilori", "I Am Your Mind (part 2)", "Touch Of Class", "Third Time", "Come To Me", "Wide Open", "Funk In The Hole", "Liquid Love", "Tarzan", "Sunshine (demo)", and "I Like The Way You Do It To Me". ✨✧ Esther PhillipsYou've Come A Long Way Baby/All About Esther Phillips (with bonus track) ... CD
Mercury/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1977/1978. Used ... $24.99
A pair of late 70s albums from Esther Phillips – '77's You've Come A Long Way, Baby and '78's All About Esther Phillips – together in a single set! The cover of You've Come A Long Way, Baby which has Phillips standing in front of a limo, might be a bit "on the nose" – but the album itself has some really nice tracks, thanks in part to production and arrangements by Pee Wee Ellis, who always managed to get the best out of Esther during the 70s! The groove's got a lot top shelf clubby soul and easygoing funky swagger – and Esther sounds great out front! Tracks include "Into The Mystic", "Love Addict", "If I Loved You", "In A Soft & Subtle Way", "My Prayer", and "Somewhere Along The Line". This version includes "My Prayer (Previously Unreleased Extended Mix)". All About Esther Phillips is a sweet 70s Wayne Henderson-produced set – quite a different groove for Esther! It's got elements of the lightly funky soul of some of the immediately preceding records, but this one has some elements in the arrangements that bring a more gentle touch – particularly the chimes & strings. Groovy stuff! Titles include "The Man Ain't Ready", "Native New Yorker", "SOS", "Pie In The Sky", "If I Fall In Love By Morning" and more. CD

✨✧ Freddie HubbardSplash ... LP
Fantasy, 1981. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Freddie Hubbard makes a sweet splash for the 80s in this great little set – one of his last electric outings before a return to more acoustic modes! The vibe's a bit leaner than some of his late 70s albums, with most of the electricity coming from the bass, and from the keyboards by Chester Thompson or Louis Small – but the record's definitely got that soaring sense of flow that Freddie brought to his best work of this nature – that new sound he unlocked during the 70s, which finally seemed to find the right voice for that mighty horn of his! Jeanne Tracy sings a bit of vocals on the set, bringing in a touch of soul to the album – and titles include the stepping classic "Touchdown" – plus "Splash", "Mystic Lady", "I'm Yours", "Jarri", "You're Gonna Lose Me", and "Sister Stine". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve.)

✨✧ TemptationsBare Back ... LP
Atlantic, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The Temptations on Atlantic Records – sounding different than their Motown years, and still pretty darn great! The group's got some wonderful help here from the team of Brian and Eddie Holland – still very much in fine fine form, and coming up with some backings that have a warm modern soul groove that really works great with the group's harmonies – a great step forward they might never have gotten at their previous label – almost handled here as if the Temps were some bold new discovery in soul, getting really top-shelf treatment. Otis Williams is firmly in place with a fine lead vocal, and there's a smooth grooving feel here that really matches the bigger Philly groups on Atlantic at the time. Titles include "That's When You Need Love", "Mystic Woman", "Ever Ready Love", "Touch Me Again", "I See My Child", and "You're So Easy To Love". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the lyric sleeve. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Jean CarneDon't Let It Go To Your Head – The Jean Carne Anthology ... CD
Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 1970s/1980s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic tribute to the great Jean Carne – a singer who started out in jazz, working with then-husband Doug Carn on spiritual sessions and drummer Norman Connors on his soulful sides of the 70s – then shifted over to the Philadelphia International label, where she really helped Philly soul find new direction moving into the 80s! Jean always brings all the sophistication of her roots into her music – making her way more than just another soul singer, and instead a vocalist with a great range of expression that has her opening up in just the right way, no matter what the setting. This excellent collection is filled with classics from her years on Philadelphia International, and also includes some rare 12" mixes and duets with other artists too. Titles include "Free Love", "No Laughing Matter", "Don't Let It Go To Your Head", "You Can't Come Back Now", "There's A Shortage Of Good Men", "Time Waits For No One", "Lonely Girl In A Cold Cold World", "Bet Your Lucky Star", We Got Some Catchin Up To Do", "When I Find You Love", "Was That All It Was (12" mix)", "What's On Your Mind (12" mix)", "Revelation/Infant Eyes", "Mystic Stranger", "Completeness", and "If You Don't Know Me By Now" – plus "I'm Back For More" with Al Johnson, "Sweet & Wonderful" with Glenn Jones, "You Might Be Surprised" with Roy Ayers, "Love Is Beautiful" and "Dreams Of Tomorrow" with Dexter Wansel, "Keep In Touch" and "The Look Of Love" with Grover Washington, and "Dindi", "Love's In Your Corner", and "Valentine Love" with Norman Connors. ✨✧ Piero UmilianiPolinesia ... CD
Omicron/Dialogo (Italy), 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A mystical trip through the south seas – courtesy of Italian soundtrack composer Piero Umiliani, working here in a rare sound library setting! The tracks are moody and ethereal – with lots of spare percussion, and some dreamy island-type touches – like floating voices, isolated strings, and even a bit of moog, used to create some nice 70s exotica! There's one or two tracks that get harder-hitting, taking the percussion over the top with some snapping grooves – but most are in a 70s update of older exotica styles, including some of those that Piero might have used on some of his 60s soundtracks! Titles include "Tamburi Di Guerra", "Esorcismi", "Plenilunio", "Erbe Magiche", "Benvenuti All'Isola", "Canoe", "Sotto Le Palme", and "Pellegrinaggio Al Totem". CD

✨✧ Sergius Golowin with the Cosmic JokersLord Krishna Von Goloka ... CD
Lion, Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Freaked out, slow burning, LSD inspired freeform psychedelia from the early 70s – credited to Czech-born guru Sergius Golowin and the Cosmic Jokers! Conceptually, Lord Krishna Von Goloka concerns itself with the spiritual machinations of the universe and all kinds of mystical mumbo jumbo of which we can't claim to speak for the merits, mostly due to a language barrier, but the leisurely cosmic soundspaces speak to us well enough! Acoustic guitars, spacey keys, organ and echoey sounds bring a lighter feel to much of it, as opposed to the heavier proggy touches of contemporary efforts of the time. 3 long pieces, the uber epic length "Der Reigen" and "Di Hock-Zeit" which each run near 20 minutes, and the shorter middle part "Die Weibe Alm". Curtis FullerBlues-Ette (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Savoy (Japan), 1959. Used ... $16.99
A seminal session from Curtis Fuller – one of a handful he cut for Savoy, recorded during that late 50s/early 60s period when he seemed poised to become one of the biggest trombonists in jazz! (Whatever happened? How did he cut so many records as a leader so fast, then slide back into being a sideman for most of the rest of his career?) The set's cut in that laidback blowing session mode of the Savoy hardbop years – with tremendous work from Benny Golson on tenor, plus Tommy Flanagan on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Al Harewood on drums – all working through easily-handled tunes that include "Minor Vamp", "Love Your Spell Is Everywhere", "Five Spot After Dark", and "Twelve Inch". Think soul jazz with a slight touch of mysticism! CD also features 3 bonus alternate takes of tunes on the album! CD

Pat MethenyAmerican Garage ... LP
ECM, 1979. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A brilliantly evocative album from Pat Metheny – one that's got a quietly epic feel, as Pat and group soar out across the American landscape in a set of tunes that subtly explore space and sound while still remaining wonderfully fluid. There's nothing forced here, and nothing too slick – just a magical blend of acoustic and electric sounds, touched with those mystical notes that seem to flow effortlessly from the hands of keyboardist Lyle Mays. Titles include "The Epic", "American Garage", "Cross The Heartland", "Airstream", and "The Search". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lem Winchester & Benny GolsonWinchester Special ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the greatest album ever from vibist Lem Winchester – an early soulful star on his instrument, but one who was taken from us all too soon! Lem's got this groove that really brings the instrument forward a lot – a harder touch that rivals that of Johnny Lytle, but a looser, freer sense of lyricism – hinting a bit at the Roy Ayers to come. This album's got a biting hardbop vibe, mixed with soul jazz elements – and the group features key contributions from Benny Golson on tenor sax – plus Tommy Flanagan on piano, Wendell Marsall from bass, and the great Art Taylor on drums. Golson's at his rootsiest here, too – and titles include "Down Fuzz", "Mysticism", "The Dude", and "Will You Still Be Mine?". CD

✨✧ CressidaCressida/Asylum ... CD
Vertigo/BGO (UK), 1970/1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 lost jazz rock classics from Cressida – back to back in a single package! While decidedly more rock-oriented than some of their progressive contemporaries in the UK jazz rock scene, Cressida still had a great approach to rock that used a lot of jazz-based chords and rhythms, in the manner that was being explored by other bands at the time – like Colosseum or Nucleus. On the self-titled Cressida album, the general instrumental mix features hard drums, organ, and guitars – plus vocals that are very much in a Moody Blues tradition, but which seem to have more of an early King Crimson approach to lyrics, touched by some of the Nick Drake chord progressions on guitar. A hard one to pin down, but surprisingly enjoyable today – and the kind of record that lives way way past its noodly progressive roots! Titles include "Lights IN My Mind", "The Only Earthman In Town", "To Play Your Little Game", "Time For Bed", and "Down Down". Asylum has an even fuller, more ambitious feel than the first album – and the lineup is expanded slightly to make some great room for the legendary Harold McNair on flute! Tracks are bold and focused – with great lead vocals from Angus Cullen, who sometimes sings in a jazzy mode – but other times comes off with a raspy, heartfelt quality – and there's almost a Moody Blues-esque sense of mysticism going on with some of the best tracks. Titles include "Munich", "Asylum", "Goodbye Post Office Tower Goodbye", "Let Them Come When They Will", "Summer Weekend Of A Lifetime", and "Survivor". CD
