✨✧ Piero PiccioniL'Alba Dell'Uomo ... CD
Beat (Italy), Mid 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very rare slice of work from one of the hippest Italian soundtrack composers of his time – presented here with a huge amount of tracks that have never been released! Piero Piccioni scored the musico for the TV show L'Alba Dell'Uomo in 1975, and the work was hardly released outside of Italy – making the sounds within a very obscure chapter in the very storied career of the composer. Tunes are mostly short, and have a blend of light woodwinds, slight electric instrumentation, and some nice exotic touches – mixed with a few more offbeat moments that you'd be more likely to find in the work of Ennio Morricone, and just a few of the groovier cuts you'd expect from Piccioni's earlier work! CD features 34 tracks in all – half of which are previously unreleased – over 70 minutes of music. CD

PrinceMusicology ... CD
NPG, 2004. Used ... $2.99
A very strong album by the one-and-only Prince – maybe the catchiest, most rewarding full length by the royal one since the Revolution days! Musicology is most notable for the undeniable exuberance and joy that vibrates from the speakers, track after track. Prince seems to be having fun on this one, and as much as we admired the freaky prog funk of his previous album The Rainbow Children (even if it was pretty damn puzzling), it's great to have these big, Revolution style funk rock party numbers back in the cannon. All praise aside, we have to admit we're just a little bit baffled by the relentless hype and fawning, over-baked love this album has gotten in mainstream publications, but our beef is with toothless entertainment "journalists" and "critics", not with Prince. Highly recommended! Tracks include "Musicology", "A Million Days", "Life O' The Party" ,"Call My Name", "Cinnamon Girl" (not the Neil Young song), "What Do U Want Me 2 Do?", "On The Couch" and more. ✨✧ CrittersYounger Girl – The Complete Kapp & Musicor Recordings ... CD
Kapp/Now Sounds (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really dreamy bit of sunshine pop from The Critters – a wonderful group who do an excellent job of mixing sweet harmonies with pop-psych instrumentation – yet all in a way that's totally sweet, and very very catchy too! The record's got a very groovy feel overall – thanks to great work from lead singer Jimmy Ryan – who's got a voice that's sweet, yet kind of "broken" inside – a style that makes for some really wonderful delivery on the album's original tunes. Instrumentation includes a bit of organ and some really great jangly guitars – and the production also has some nice trippy touches that deepen the sunshine sound of the set – especially on some of the singles at the end! The CD features the full Younger Girl album, plus 13 more bonus tracks – all remastered from the original mono master tapes. Titles include "Younger Girl", "I Wear A Silly Grin", "Mr Diengly Sad", "New York Bound", "Little Girl", "Heart Of Love Head Of Stone", "No One But You", "Dancing In The Street", "Come Back On A Rainy Day", and "Forever No More". ✨✧ Russell GunnEthnomusicology Vol 3 ... CD
Justin Time (Canada), 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
Severely funky jazz from trumpeter Russell Gunn – working here in an electrified mode that reminds us a bit of recent work from Nicholas Payton or Roy Hargrove – but which comes off sounding a lot hipper overall! The set's got a bouncing, bass-heavy groove that's clearly rooted in older funk traditions – but it's performed by Russell with a host of cutting edge up and comers, in a style that's pushing lots of new styles and sounds of its own! Gunn himself plays acoustic and electric trumpet, as well as keyboards – and he's joined by Stefon Harris on vibes, Nick Rolfe on Fender Rhodes, and Kebbi Williams on tenor and electric tenor. The set's got lots of extra space for added instrumentation that includes work on alto, percussion, pro tools, turntables, and voice – and the overall sound somehow manages to come off with a lot harder-hitting edge than other recent projects of this sort! Titles include "East St Louis", "John Wicks", "No Separation", "The Critic's Song", "Yesterdays", and "Stranger Fruit". CD

Musicor, 1977. Near Mint- ... $2.99
A slightly unusual set by legendary jazz vocalist Johnny Hartman from the mid 70s. These sessions have him singing with smooth larger arrangements by Fred Norman – in a style that's verging on adult vocals, but has enough of a jazz swing to still please our ears – and some interesting titles that include "Suzanne", "When", "Starting Now", "That's What Makes A House A Home", "Ornery Little Critter", "I've Only Myself To Blame", "If I Could Only See You Again" and "Hello Mrs Jones". Prince3121 ... CD
Universal, 2006. Used ... $2.99
A strong effort from the mid 00s revitalized Prince – one that doesn't approach the greatness of the best material, but a graceful and consistent gem nonetheless! As it was done on his big ol' comeback album, Musicology, Prince takes strides to revisit his classic styles on the different tunes, but it doesn't come off as a simple rehash. Each song pretty much finds Prince in a different mode that can be found on a previous LP, but it works because it's so engaged and warm. Latter day Prince really only turns us off when he strains too hard to do something new, and succeeds in our eyes when he simply makes with his trademark pop funk signature sounds we know and love. Notice that no one really succeeds at ripping Prince off? It's because it can't be done. Tracks include "3121", "Lolita", "Te Amo Corazon", "Black Sweat", "Incense And Candles", "Satisfied", "Fury", "The Word", "Beautiful, Loved And Blessed", "The Dance" and "Get On The Boat". CD

Paul SteinbeckSound Experiments – The Music Of The AACM ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2022. New Copy ... $27.99 32.50
Writer Paul Steinbeck has already given us a great book on the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – but this time around, he looks at the larger scene from which they came, the groundbreaking AACM moment in jazz, which emerged in Chicago in the late 60s! Steinbeck provides some cultural and historical context, but also focuses in on key recordings that helped to define the special genius of AACM musicians and their united vision – with an approach that's build around different records on a chapter by chapter basis – even leading up to a few more recent recordings that show the continuing influence and growth of the organization. Along the way, Steinbeck provides some musical notations and deeper analysis of the sounds from his perspective as a musicologist – very illuminating to us, as we tend to have much more of a visceral response to these records – a lineup that includes Air Time by Air, Levels & Degrees Of Light by Muhal Richard Abrams, Sound by Roscoe Mitchell, Voyager by George Lewis, Nonaah by Roscoe Mitchell, Composition 76 by Anthony Braxton, Ten Freedom Summers by Wadada Leo Smith, and Mandorla Awakening II by Nicole Mitchell. The hardcover book features many charts and scores throughout – and is a total of 272 pages in length. Book

VariousManhattan Soul Vol 2 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
Classy soul and killer grooves – a great helping of rare New York sides from the late 60s – all of which show a great evolution of the Uptown style from a few years before! Things are polished, but never too smooth or commercial at all – and instead, the music's got this quality of coming right from the heart of the music scene of the time – the cream of the crop, right from the top – and that includes singers, songwriters, and session help too! Vocals are mighty deep throughout – and the tracks all have a strong indie pedigree, as they're pulled from the labels Wand, Scepter, and Musicor – all imprints we always check out when digging for rare singles. As usual, Kent's gone way beyond expectations – not just with the track selection, but with full notes too – for a total of 24 tracks that include "Runaway Slave" by Joe Perkins, "That Girl" by Porgy & The Monarchs, "Kiss & Make Up" by The Inspirations, "I Don't Want Nobody To Lead Me On" by The Masqueraders, "Horsin Around" by Benny Gordon & The Soul Brothers, "Lonely Weatherman" by The Premiers, "A Man A Woman" by Chris Bartley, "I Just Gotta Have You" by Nella Dodds, "Knick Knack Patty Wack" by Lou Lawton, "No Jealous Lover" by Lois Lane, and "I'm Gonna Have A Party" by Ed Bruce. A stunning tribute to the great Alan Lomax – the legendary musicologist, historian, and recording engineer who captured so many wonderful American sounds in the 20th Century! Lomax's work has been crucial to both the Library Of Congress and Smithsonian/Folkways Records – yet there's also a fair bit that has never seen the light of day before – amazing recordings that make up a surprisingly large part of this box set – which compiles work in many different styles recorded by Alan in the field – blues, folk, gospel, and global modes, plus compelling regional genres – all presented here in a special 6LP set. The box features 55 never-issued tracks, and lots more great ones too – with music by Shirley Collins, Fiddlin Joe Martin, Compagna Sacco, Calvin Frazier, Sonny Boy Williamson, Jelly Roll Morton, Ernest Williams, Neal Morris, Skip James, Son House, Elmer Barton, Brendan Behan, George Sea Island Singers, Big Bill Broonzy, Elizabeth Austin, Jean Ritchie, Bascomb Lamar Lunsford, Bessie Jones, Duke Of Iron, Charles Barnett, and many others. ✨✧ VariousWhere The Girls Are Volume 10 ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The final volume in this fantastic collection of rare female soul from the 60s – and one that's maybe even better than the earlier entries in the series! The tracks here are totally great, and totally well-chosen – not big girl group hits of the time, but instead a treasure trove of under-appreciated singles on labels that include Excello, Dionne, Cameo/Parkway, Fairmount, Musicor, and other indies of the time – mix with a few 60s gems that weren't even issued back in the day! As always with Ace/Kent, the track list is superb – completely wonderful music that we never would have discovered otherwise – track after track of new discoveries for our ears, all presented with fantastic sound, very detailed notes, and enough tracks to make the whole thing a hell of a deal for the price. Many of these cuts have much more of a deep soul vibe than the lighter style you might be expecting for 60s female soul – and titles include "This Heart Is Haunted" by Kelly Garrett, "Hot Spot" by The Bronzettes, "Top Twenty" by The Delicates, "He's My Hero" by The Avons, "It's The Loving Season" by The Vareeations, "Just A Little Touch Of Your Love" by Saundra Franklin, "Sir Galahad" by The Elites, "That's How It Goes" by Jackie & Gayle, "That Guy Of Mine" by The Sherrys, "Everybody South Street" by The Taffys, "I Would If I Could" by The Sweet Three, "That Kind Of Love" by Diana King, "Nothing Can Go Wrong" by The Beas, and "False Alarm" by Tari Stevens. ✨✧ Hot ButterHot Butter Popcorn ... LP
Musicor/Hallmark (UK), 1973. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A groovy moogy pop classic! Hot Butter weren't the most groundbreaking moog combo, but they certainly were the most successful. The title cut of this one, their version of Gershon Kingsley's "Popcorn", was used in a gazillion commercials and TV shows during the 70s – and was certainly the biggest moog-oriented single of the early years. The whole record's pretty good, too – even if it has them mostly copping songs from other artists, like "Song of the Nairobi Trio", and guitar instrumental favorites "Apache", "Telstar", and "Pipeline". And in fact, those tracks sum up the group best – as they were to the moog what the Ventures were to the electric guitar: they popularized the instrument tremendously through instrumental versions of hits from other folks. Stunning early sounds from the legendary George Jones – material recorded in the years before his bigger fame on the Musicor and Epic labels – and tracks that show that Jones was already a hell of a well-developed talent right from the start! The cuts here sparkle with that trademark George Jones vocal sound – but also have a nice sort of an edge, as George hasn't settled down into that totally smooth approach of later years – and instead here moves between rocking moments and more twang-heavy tunes – served up on an assortment of singles and rare tracks recorded for the Mercury, Starday, and Dixie labels. Titles include "Too Much Water", "Seasons Of My Heart", "Gonna Come Get You", "I'm Ragged But I'm Right", "Eskimo Pie", "No No Never", "Play It Cool", "Take The Devil Out Of Me", "Just One More", and "No Money In This Deal". ✨✧ VariousManhattan Soul Vol 3 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really special set of soul tracks – and one that's got a vibe that's maybe even different from the previous two Manhattan Soul collections! This package is filled with the kind of overlooked gems that sometimes get lost because people are a bit too focused in their record-collecting tastes – mellow cuts that are still a bit funky, deep soul from up-north sources, and even some group numbers that are neither upbeat and Northern, nor slow enough to be mellow harmonies. Instead, these cuts together really defy the rules – showing that in the deeper corners of the New York underground, there were always great new ideas going on – not work that was trying to challenge the stars at Atlantic, or the Brill Building best – but instead very happy to just do their own thing, in some very groovy ways. The work comes from the Wand, Scepter, and Musicor family of labels – better-known for big hits, but also very dedicated to cool indie singles that only seem to be getting their due in more recent years. CD features 24 tracks in all – and titles include "Giving Up" by Junior Lewis, "Now That You're Gone" by Sonny Turner & Sound Limited, "Open Up Your Heart" by Dan & The Cleancuts, "Every Little Bit Helps" by Helen Henry, "Two Stupid Feet" by The Shirelles, "The Same Old Song" by The Dinos, "Nobody Made You Love Me" by The Charts, "Fun City Woman" by Ann Bailey, "The Landlord" by The Tabs, "Does Love Believe In Me" by Melba Moore, "Mr Schemer" by Brenton Wood, "You Picked Me" by The Soldier Boys, and "Never In My Life" by Lee Moses. ✨✧ SOULWhat Is It/Can You Feel It ... CD
Musicor/BGP (UK), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from a group who've definitely earned their name! Naming a group SOUL might be suicide for a band that can't carry off the groove – but these guys are funky monsters, with a real talent for a hard heavy sound that was rarely matched by other combos. The band have a great drummer, with a good talent for the funky break, but also a jazzy flourish that works well on SOUL's mellower numbers – and apart from the usual bass and guitar riffing, the album also features some great funky flute, in a mode that's similar to some of Jeremy Steig's excellent early work. Some tracks have vocals and some have instrumentals – and both albums are great! ACE put together both these masterpieces of heavy funky grooves and laid them back to back on one CD of super-heavy funky tracks. The set's a great deal, and both albums are winners all the way through! Tracks include "Down in the Ghetto", "Burning Spear", "Soul", "Tell it Like It Is", "Peace Of Mind", "My Cherie Amour", and "Sleeping Beauty". CD

A great set of gospel group harmony soul – recorded by a group with a same name and a different style than the funky Soul Searchers – one who've got a wonderful approach to their vocals! Instrumentation is relatively lean – often just a drum and a guitar – which leaves plenty of room for the vocal interplay of the group – working here in a style that's a hip 70s update of some of the best harmony modes from the early years of gospel! Troy Ramey handles the lead vocals – and titles include "The Train is Gone", "Mother Take Your Rest", "Someone Watches Over Me", "Move To A Better Home", and "I Got Rid Of My Heavy Load". CD

Mondo Groove (Italy), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
I-Robots take a mighty cool look at the Phantom Records label – a small imprint from that great moment when the Italian club scene was getting pretty electric and cosmic – almost as a dancefloor extension of sound library modes from a few years before! The cuts here all have plenty of keyboards and a fair bit of spacey touches – all while managing to sound upbeat and funky, although with more colder electro modes as some of the tracks move a bit further into the 80s run of the label. Some tracks are quite short, others are longer groovers – and titles include "Come With Me (I-Robots reconstruction)" by Carlotto, "Cometa Music Hall" by Cometa Music Hall, "Whirlwind" by Don Bernini, "Radio Cosmo 101" by The One O Ones, and "Music One (parts 1, 7, & 8)" by Musicone.
