ArtifactsBetween A Rock & A Hard Place (180 gram gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Big Beat/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1994. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $51.99 56.99
An overlooked classic from the glory days of the 90s scene – the debut of The Artifacts, a crew who should have been bigger, given the quality of this set! There's plenty here that echoes with some of the well-remembered acts from the moment – bits that resonate nicely with Black Sheep, Nice & Smooth, and maybe even Tribe at times – especially in the choice of samples, which is usually pretty great, and often features some nice jazzy bits that really make the album shine! Production is by Redman, Buckwild, and T-Ray – and titles include "Heavy Ammunition", "Wrong Side Of Da Tracks", "C'Mon With Da Git Down", "Flexi Wit Da Technique", "Whayback", and "Lower Da Boom". Chet BakerLive In Rosenheim – Chet Baker's Last Recording As Quartet (180 gram white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Timeless/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1988. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $27.99 44.99
The last-ever Chet Baker recording with a quartet – and a set that shows just how completely magical the legendary trumpeter was even up to the end! Chet at this time is completely different than Chet in the 50s or 60s – as he'd really found a way to make all these amazing new sounds on his horn, partly as a way of getting around some of his physical limitations, but also as a way of opening up some of those mid 60s ideas that he barely explored on record at the time. He's working here with a very important musical partner from the last decade – getting great help on guitar and flute from Nicola Stilo – plus Marc Abrams on bass and Luca Flores on piano – on titles that include "Portrait In Black & White", "Funk In Deep Freeze", "Arborway", "In A Sentimental Way", and "If I Should Lose You". Ken BootheBlack, Gold, & Green (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 32.99
A seminal moment for Jamaican soul genius Ken Boothe – a set that has him stepping into deeper, more righteous territory – maybe following the inspiration of some of his soul contemporaries in the US! The set's nicely poised between two modes – not really a roots reggae set, given that there's more warmly glowing soul in the production – but with sense of depth that really makes Boothe's work of a few years before really pale in comparison – and that's saying a lot, given how great that stuff is too. Titles include "Have I Sinned", "Look What You Have Done To Me", "Train/I Don't Want To See You Cry", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Thinking", "Black Gold & Green", and "Second Chance". Ken BootheBlood Brothers (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 32.99
A mellow 70s classic from the great Ken Boothe – very much at the top of his game as one of the most soulful singers on the Jamaican scene – and working here with superb production and arrangements from the great Lloyd Charmers! Charmers has a way of bringing a bit of an edge to Ken's vocals, while also keeping things nicely laidback – this slow-burning style that's got plenty of rocksteady roots, but which steps forward with a bit more of the pride of the mid 70s roots scene. Not that Ken's a roots artist, but he definitely has a current of righteousness that comes through in the musicon titles that include "Blood Brothers", "Silver Words", "I'm Singing Home", "I Don't Want To See You Cry", "No Woman No Cry", "Freedom Day", and "I Shot The Sherriff". Atco/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 39.99
A landmark set of grooves by this excellent Detroit group – a trio who recorded for the local indie Karen, but got a much bigger boost towards fame when their record was picked up by Atlantic! The set's one of the killer 60s Motor Town sets produced by Ollie McLaughlin – and like the rest, it's got a really special edge – music that goes way past any simple 60s soul cliches, and which will make the set one of the real standouts in your collection. Arrangements are by Dale Warren, Riley Hampton, and Mike Terry – and titles include The Capitols' big hit "Cool Jerk", and also includes loads of other great tracks written by Donald Storball of the group – like "Dog & Cat", "Zig Zaggin", "The Kick", and others – plus versions of "Hello Stranger", "Love Makes The World Go Round", and "Good Lovin". Timeless/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 34.99
An overlooked later album from alto player Lou Donaldson – done both after his 60s Blue Note work, and his 70s material for bigger labels – and a great back to basics session all the way through! Lou is reunited with the great Herman Foster on piano – a player who made some of his early 60s pre-funk records really sound so great – and the duo take off with all the warmth and spontaneous imagination of those excellent early years – getting help in the quartet from Geoff Fuller on bass and Victor Jones on drums. Titles include "Confirmation", "Whiskey Drinkin Woman", "This Is Happiness", "Exactly Like You", "Don't Blame Me", "Melancholy Baby", and Donaldson's terrific centerpiece "Tracy". EthiopiansEngine 54 (180 gram gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
A rocksteady classic from The Ethiopians – but a set that also has plenty more going on as well! The duo work here as a Jamaican counterpart to American soul groups – one of the first and best to hit the Kingston scene – but they also open themselves up to lots of other ideas in the process, and sometimes lay back vocally to just let the album open up and groove! Harmonies are The Ethiopians' strongest calling card – but they're often first directed by the rhythms, then slide in to warm things up and give a larger presence to the slow-stepping, midtempo grooves – all delivered with a classic Kingston head-nodding approach. The album's a key genre-building moment in Jamaican music – and titles include the classic "Train To Skaville", plus "Engine 54", "My Love", "You Got The Dough", "Woman's World", "Long Time Now", and "Unchanged Love". Philip Glass & Yo Yo MaNaqoyqatsi – Life As War (180 gram red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Sony/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 2002. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $38.99 41.99
The final album in the "qatsi" trilogy, and one that's got the same sublime Philip Glass scoring as the others – but which also features some beautiful cello solos from Yo Yo Ma too! Given that there's a darker side to this film, the warmth of the cello balances things out nicely – and occasionally creates a nice juxtaposition with a few of the more urgent moments in the larger orchestrations – which are performed by the Philip Glass ensemble. Titles include "Media Weather", "Old World", "Intensive Time", "Primacy Of Number", "The Vivid Unknown", "Point Blank", and "Definition". LP, Vinyl record album

Golden Ear-Rings (Golden Earring)Miracle Mirror (180 gram clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Polydor/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 39.99
Man, these guys are really opening up their sound a lot with this release – moving into the heavier, harder rock territory that would bring them big fame in the 70s! The whole thing's a lot more tripped-out than before – none of the sweeter, lyrical modes of the group's earliest hits – and instead, a lot more moody numbers that really brood nicely on heavy basslines, fuzzy guitar, and some arch vocals sung in English throughout, despite the Dutch origins of the band. Why this one didn't rock the UK and US scenes bigger at the time is a mystery – but the record's ripe for rediscovery now, and filled with great cuts that include "The Truth About Arthur", "Who Cares", "Mr Fortune's Wife", "Must I Cry", "Magnificent Magistral", "I've Just Lost Somebody", "Sam & Sue", and "Crystal Heaven". Timeless/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 32.99
Nothing mystifying here – as the album grabs us right from the get-go – with wonderful Fender Rhodes lines from leader Tom Grant, and plenty of soulful tenor from the great Joe Henderson! The album's an overlooked gem from Joe's late 70s years – and the the player is right at home next to Grant's keys – which are sometimes acoustic, and sometimes accompanied by a wordless, humming sort of vocal – which really gives the album some strongly soulful currents! The rest of the quartet features Rick Laird on bass and Ron Steen on drums – and the electric tunes are especially wonderful, and are almost an extension of the vibe of some of Joe's late Milestone albums. Titles include "Caribbean Firedance", "Gazelle", "No Me Esqueca", and "Peddie Has A Point". LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie HancockFat Albert Rotunda (180 gram purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $35.99 38.99
A crucial record in the career of keyboard legend Herbie Hancock – the first session in which he really gets all-out funky, but in a way that's different than his spacier jams to come in the 70s! At some level, the album links the early soul jazz modes of Herbie's first few Blue Note recordings with the more electric style that he'd approach in the coming years – with Hancock on both electric and acoustic piano, in a very hip group that includes Joe Henderson on tenor and flute, Johnny Coles on trumpet, Garnett Brown on trombone, Buster Williams on electric bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums – a group who are almost more like an Atlantic Records late 60s jazz combo than a Warner Brothers one – a quality that definitely comes through in these tunes! The music has a fantastic mix of soulful grooves and deeper ideas – and tracks include the oft-sampled "Fat Mama", an early version of the classic "Tell Me A Bedtime Story", and the tracks "Wiggle Waggle", "Fat Albert Rotunda", "Lil Brother", and "Jessica". Idle RaceIdle Race (180 gram silver vinyl pressing) ... LP
Liberty/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 38.99
A record that maybe didn't make a huge wave when it came out at the time, but a set that serves as a key springboard for the young Jeff Lynne and all the magic he'd later create with ELO! Although Lynne was making music with Roy Wood in The Move around the same time, the record's definitely more in the warmer, compressed territory that Jeff would expand upon a few years later with his massive classics of the 70s – already sitting strongly at the production deck in the studio, and blending the group's core instrumentation with these arrangements that really create a great sort of fullness in the music. In other words, there's maybe not a full "electric orchestra" vibe here, but the set has a great precursor to that mode – on tracks that include "Come With Me", "Sea Of Dreams", "Going Home", "Please No More Sad Songs", "Big Chief Woolly Bosher", "Someone Knocking", "Girl At The Window", "Hurry Up John", and "A Better Life (The Weather Man Knows)". Kirk Lightsey with Chet BakerEverything Happens To Me (180 gram purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Timeless/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
Chet Baker blows trumpet here with one of the tightest rhythm sections of his later albums – a killer trio led by pianist Kirk Lightsey, who also gets in some great solos here too! The session's led by Kirk, and has a nicely different vibe than some of those issued under Baker's own name – less of the airy tones that Chet was exploring in less traditional lineups – and more focus on soulful swing, with help from David Eubanks on bass and Eddie Gladden on drums – who often groove in a way that opens up the lyrical tones on Lightsey's piano. Chet sings on "Ray's Ideas" and "Everything Happens To Me", and blows trumpet throughout – and other titles include "Girl With The Purple Eyes", "Speak No Evil", and "Inner Urge" – the last of which is the Joe Henderson's classic, and gets a nicely burning take. One of Willie Nelson's last albums for RCA, and a set that definitely hints at some of the musical changes to come on his albums for Atlantic and Columbia! The sound's a bit different here than on Nelson's 60s RCA material, as Felton Jarvis is handling production, and letting Willie do his thing a bit more – which is great, as there's plenty of wonderful tunes in the mix – including an early solo take of the classic "Good Hearted Woman", alongside other great material that includes "Will You Remember", "One Step Beyond", "London", "The Words Don't Fit The Picture", "Stay Away From Lonely Places", and "Rainy Day Blues". OmarThis Is Not A Love Song (180 gram gold & black vinyl pressing) ... LP
BMG/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1997. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 48.99
Omar's second album for BMG – and an instant classic set of soul tracks that sadly almost disappeared as soon as it was released! The album shows Omar growing even stronger than ever both as a singer and songwriter – moving from the indie feel of earlier work into a confident role as one of the few strong male soul talents of the end of the 20th century. Omar's voice is heavenly, as always – almost an electric-sounding pitch that works perfectly with the keyboards and instrumentation on the set – and his songs have a mature quality that is at once personal and professional. The album's filled with some great songs and wonderful surprises – like Omar's cover of The Stranglers' "Golden Brown", and tracks that include "Say Nothin" (2 versions), "This Is Not A Love Song", "Fallin", "Music For The Pipe", "Waiting Game", and "Spring Step". A great introduction to the music of Shuggie Otis – the tripped-out guitarist who's best known for his early 70s classics for Columbia Records! This set comes from those three amazing albums – and showcase Shuggie's shift from bluesy funk guitar to the more laidback, tripped-out work of his classic Inspiration Information album! Cuts from that classic take up all of side two – including "Aht Uh Mi Hed", "Sparkle City", "Inspiration Information", and "Island Letter" – and side one features other gems that include his original recording of "Strawberry Letter 23", plus "Me & My Woman", "Hurricane", "Baby I Need You", "Sweet Thang", and "Ice Cold Daydream". A record that's every bit as weird and wild as its cover – and the only album ever recorded by this overlooked band – a late 60s act who were hip enough to be on the lineup at Woodstock, even though they never seemed to crack the big time after that! Yet although Quill were left out of the film version of the concert, their music here is more than heady enough to live up to the famous company in which they traveled – certainly psych, but with some deeper currents on the guitar that almost verge into hard rock at times – at a level that makes us wonder where they might have gone had they hung on a bit longer! Titles include "Thumbnail Screwdriver", "The Tube Exuding", "BBY", "Yellow Butterfly", "Too Late", and "Shrieking Finally". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the grooviest records ever cut by Brit easy maestro Harry Roche – and a set that's got plenty of sweet 70s touches in the mix, at a level that really opens things up in a great way! The set's got some key Fender Rhodes from Alaln Branscombe, who has a very unique touch on the instrument – and in addition to Harry's own work on valve trombone, the record also features Ray Swinfield on flute, Chris Pyne on trombone, and Roy Wilcox on soprano and alto sax. There's plenty of other jazz players in the mix too, grooving to sweet arrangements from David Lindup, Derek Cox, Pete Moore, and others – on titles that include "Superwoman", "Pinball Wizard", "Good Morning Heartache", "Lay Lady Lay", "Ludmilla's Theme", "That's Living", and the 10 minute title track, "Spiral" – a mighty nice number! Dom Salvador e AbolicaoSom, Sangue e Raca (180 gram red vinyl pressing) ... LP
CBS/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $38.99 39.99
A landmark album of Brazilian funk – the record that set the tone for so many others to follow – and which can easily stand head to head with the best American funk of the time as well! The group's headed by Brazilian pianist Dom Salvador – who you'll know from 60s bossa nova material and straighter jazz sounds – but here, Dom's got this heavy-hitting left hand approach –which is a perfect balance to the funky combo Abolicao – who play with this rich sound that's an equal balance of jazz, funk, and Brazilian music influences. The record's a great precursor to later Brazilian funk albums – like those by Banda Black Rio or Unaio Black – but the influence of Salvador's piano gives the record a jazzier edge, one that mixes extremely well with the wide range of percussion on the set. Titles include "Som Sangue e Raca", "Guanabar", "Moeda Reza e Cor", "O Rio", "Tio Macro", "Evo", "Number One", "Hei Voce", and "Samba Do Malandrinho". LP, Vinyl record album

Straight, soulful work from Archie Shepp – an overlooked gem from the start of the 90s, and a set that we'd rank right up there with his classics from his great "straight" period of the late 70s! The album's got frequent partner Horace Parlan on piano – who already helps things get grounded in all the right territory – and the excellent Wayne Dockery is on bass, a player with subtle power that really helps give the album all the right depth. George Brown completes the group on drums – and Shepp blows both tenor and alto sax – the latter of which has this raspy quality that's maybe overblown, but in this really powerful way. Title sinclude "Ask Me Now", "Party Time", "Billie's Bossa", "Go Down Moses", and "Now's The Time". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer album of 70s New Orleans funk! Chocolate Milk were an amazing funk group in their best moments – and this album is certainly one of those moments – a blistering batch of tracks that set a whole new style for the Crescent City scene, and which showed that producers Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn could easily hit the hipper notes of the 70s! There's a tight rhythmic sound at the core of most numbers, but expanded instrumentation over the top – bits of spacey electrics or jazzier electronics that never would have shown up in Sansu records of years back, but which show that with the right group, New Orleans funk could easily take on the hippest styles going down on both coasts! The title cut, "Action Speaks Louder Than Words", is a slow funk classic – and the record also includes the incredible electronic-tinged "Time Machine", a perpetual favorite these days. Other nice tracks include "Pretty Pimpin' Willie" and "Ain't Nothin' But a Thing". Arguably the band's best album ever! LP, Vinyl record album

There's great use of percussion at the bottom of most cuts – and the set begins with a cut that's less reggae than most, which really sets the scene for the distinctive quality of the record – a vibe that only gets better as the well-trained vocals of the group spread around and help deliver the message-oriented lyrics! George Adams and Don Pullen knock it out of the park on this one – finding great company in each other's presence, and really moving things forward in the process! The set begins with a long track titled "Mingus Metamorphosis", and that really sums up the spirit of the record – an 80s reworking of all the ideas that the players had learned from Mingus, but with an individual, personal sense that's all their own – and very different than some of the more standard modes of the Mingus Dynasty group that continued the legacy in a more direct manner. Adams is bold one minute, lyrical the next – and plays both tenor and flute – alongside Pullen on piano, Cameron Brown on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums. Titles include "Mingus Metamorphosis", "Samba For Now", "City Gates", "Thank You Very Much Mr Monk", and "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen". LP, Vinyl record album

Pure genius from The Saints – and one of those records that has the group working years ahead of their time – relocated to the UK right in the middle of the punk years, but with this style of slower-burning modes and deeper sophistication that so many others would take up later on in the 80s! The songwriting is great, and the presentation very unique – hardly the work that you'd expect from a group who were billed as Australian punk at the start, as they've already evolved so much in just a short space of time – yet still manage the right dose of sneer and sharpness to keep up their old image too! The guitar work of Ed Kuepper is fantastic – again a few years ahead of its time – and titles include "Brisbane Security City", "Swing For The Crime", "Everything's Fine", "The Prisoner", "This Time", "The Chameleon", "Church Of Indifference", and "Crazy Googenheimer Blues". A legendary group who never fully got their due – and maybe one of the creepier acts on the British scene at the start of the 70s! The cover art probably gives things away – but the sound of the record is even more haunting – with some acoustic elements that echo the acid folk movement of the time, but more dynamic energy at other spots that resonate more with prog – all topped by vocals that have a completely sinister sound that really makes the group stand out! Despite the acoustic guitars, these guys are hardly the traditional-leaning style of some of their folk rock contemporaries – and, if anything, it feels like they opened up some Pandora's box from the past, and let out all this weird Wicker Man energy. There's still plenty of hard and fast work going on here, and that undercurrent of wit that marked so much of the best Cali punk – but there's also a sense of evil, darkness, and relentless energy that really gets at the way the heat was really turning up, almost as a competition for intensity that just kept on pushing the whole scene forward in a tremendous way. The music for the set was put together by moogy maestro Mort Garson – then making a transition from being a straight easy arranger in the early 60s, to more of a tripped-out pop-psychedelic artist of the latter part of the decade. Garson brings a nice funky undercurrent to the set – in a style that's similar to the work of David Axelrod, but which also uses a bit more electric instrumentation. Each track features a spoken bit on a Zodiac sign – written by Jacques Wilson, and spoken by Cyrus Faryar – and the album also features some nice moog work by Paul Beaver! Bebel Gilberto's really grown a lot over the years – and here, she emerges strongly as a fully-formed artist with a voice that's all her own – and a style that doesn't need to rest on the laurels of her famous family legacy! The album's easily one of the most interesting we've ever heard from Bebel – and it's got this slight spiritual undercurrent that's a real change from just bossa modes – a richer, deeper sound that almost shows echoes of some of the more compelling jazz talents in recent years, yet while still balancing out just the right sort of lovely sound for the vocals! Bass is more pronounced than before – often acoustic, but with a rollingly deep quality – on performances by both Kassin and Liminha – and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson brings in some sweet strings at points, but in a very gentle, subtle way. Seu Jorge joins Bebel on the track "Novas Ideais" – and other titles include "Tout Est Bleu", "Tom De Voz", "Nada Nao", "Somwhere Else", "Lonely In My Heart", "Areia", and "Saudade Vem Correndo". A killer album of crossover soul from the mid 70s – one that dropped like a bomb when it hit, and gave this UK group a number of big hits in America! Keyboardist Rod Temperton wrote all the tracks on the album – and he's got keen talent for both funky numbers and ballads. If soul stations played album side specials the way that classic rock stations do, side one would be in heavy rotation – as it kicks off with the funky title cut, rolls into the hit "Boogie Nights", cuts to the sample classic "Ain't No Half Steppin" (forever made famous by Big Daddy Kane), and steps into the moody ballad "Always & Forever". It's hard to beat that lineup, but side two does a pretty good job – and includes a similar mix of titles like "Super Soul Sister", "All You Do Is Dial", and "Sho'nuff Must Be Love". This great version includes a full LP of bonus tracks – including "Turn Out The Lamplight", "Special Offer", "Slip Your Disc To This", "Boogie Nights (12" disco version)", "Ain't No Half Steppin (single version)", and "Always & Forever (single version)". A bold statement by one of the best underground jazz players of the 70s! Carter Jefferson cut his chops with Art Blakey in the years after Blakey had Billy Harper in the group – and seemed to follow Harper into some of the same highly spiritual, soulful territory at the time! Jefferson's a bit more inside, but equally searching in his style – and this key album as a leader is quite possibly one of the best-ever demonstrations of his talents. Carter's recorded here on tenor and soprano sax, in two different groups – one with Terumasa Hino on trumpet, and one with Shunzo Ono on trumpet – with a great lineup that includes Harry Whitaker on piano, Clint Houston on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums! Lani Groves sings on one track – and titles include "Why", "Rise Of Atlantis", "Blues For Wood", and "Changing Trains". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredible step forward for 60s soul singer Gene McDaniels – so much so, that most folks hearing this album can't believe he's the same guy who recorded for Liberty Records a few years before! The album's incredibly righteous right from the start – and has a genre-busting quality that isn't quite soul, but isn't rock or anything else either – and instead, the kind of progressive, "years ahead of its time" sort of set that guys like David Axelrod were cutting in the same stretch. Apart from the title, the whole record's got a strong political message that's probably best embodied in the statement on the back – "Under conditions of national emergency, like now, there are only two kinds of people – those who work for freedom, and those who do not – the good guys vs the bad guys". With words like that, you can definitely bet that Eugene is on the side of the good guys – really pushing a social agenda with some wonderfully-penned tunes on the album – set to cool musical backdrops from the equally-righteous William S Fischer. Titles include "Love Letter To America", "Black Boy", "Outlaw", and "Sagittarius Red". LP, Vinyl record album

Timeless/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1989. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Beautiful late 80s work from Pharoah – a wonderfully uncomplicated session that still has a great degree of soul! The album was recorded in Paris, with a quintet that includes William Henderson on acoustic piano, Stafford James on bass, Eddie Moore on drums, and Cheikh Tidiane Fale on percussion – and the overall approach is a bit more straight ahead than on some of Sanders' other albums – but in a really great way! The tunes are long and introspective – all done with spiritual rhythmic approaches, letting Pharoah open up on tenor and soprano sax – but never in a way that's overblown or overdone. The solos are perfectly placed – with wonderful phrasing and tone, rich in the colors that we've always loved on Sanders' work, but which can sometimes get lost in the confusion of an over-ambitious session. Titles include "Moon Child", "Moon Rays", "Soon", "Moniebah", and "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

One of our favorite Woody Shaw albums from his later years – and an album that's got the same joyous spirit and free soaring feel of his best 70s work on Muse – really soaring with a sense of life and freedom in a really great way! The core group on the album is the Tone Jansa Quartet – led by European reedman Jansa, and working in a space that's quite similar to that of Shaw's backing groups on previous sessions – strong modal currents in the rhythms, and with Tone's work on soprano, tenor, and flute turning out to be a great partner for Woody's trumpet! Jansa wrote all the tunes on the set, and gave them a soaring feel that we really love – just the right mix of introspection and exploration found on classic Shaw sessions like Little Red's Fantasy or Lovedance. Keyboardist Jack Van Poll has a wonderful sense of space on this set – a way of letting the tunes build simply and gracefully – often with a slow-growing groove that lets the Rhodes roll along wonderfully – never too slow, though, and always with a sweet funky undercurrent! And while we'd never heard of Jack before this set, he's got a great sense of style and imagination on his solos – very open, but always with a soulful undercurrent. The work ranks up there with the best of Walton's recordings ever – and the tunes are all originals with a rich imagination for tone, soul, and color – and plenty of space for strong solo work. You gotta love Ken Boothe – a guy who can take familiar pop tunes like "Impossible Dream" and "Theme From The Godfather", and turn them into surprisingly soulful reggae classics! Yet that kind of magic is exactly what makes a great reggae album so great – the kind of special inflection and inversion of source material, especially when mixed with original inspiration – and served up in a classic Kingston setting that features the great Lloyd Charmers on piano and organ, as well as production of the entire set! But it's the soulful style of Boothe that really makes the whole thing great – as he presents the tunes with one of the most unique voices in 70s Jamaican music – almost a Caribbean trill at points, but mixed with raspier soul at other times. The style here is to earlier Heptones material as the early 70s Impressions records on Curtom were to their 60s albums on ABC – more righteous in content, and hipper in overall expression – with this beautiful interplay between the vocals of Leroy Sibbles, Barry Llewellyn, and Earl Morgan – all captured with this warm glow in the Harry J Studio! Stunning early work from one of our favorite reggae groups ever – the mighty Toots & The Maytals, a key link between the soul styles of the Jamaican scene of the 60s, and the righteous years to come! There's a groove to the Maytals music that nobody else seems to get this right – or this tight – a fantastic criss-crossing of rhythms that's often nicely stripped-down, and which seems to set fire to the vocal interplay between Toots and the rest of the group – in a way that's as vocally explosive as the instrumentation at the core! Sure, these guys can harmonize as well as the rest of their contemporaries – but they've also got an even greater talent for trading back and forth, which seems to make every one of their tunes an instant groove. A tremendous moment for the great George Adams as a leader – a record that won the reedman widespread attention after some key work in the bigger groups of Gil Evans and Charles Mingus! Adams is a searing, soulful player right from the start – stepping out strongly on tenor at the kickoff of the record, but also blowing some flute with this moodier, more spiritual tone that really deepens our appreciation of his talents as a musician. A treasure trove of late 60s southern soul from the great Bettye Swann – 22 tunes cut for Fame Records between 1968 and 1970 after she jumped from the indie Money Records! Sadly, the move didn't turn Bettye into the major star the label no doubt expected to arise – and these fantastic tracks were largely unappreciated at the time. This release marks the very first worthy issue of most of this material, thanks to Honest Jon's – who did a similarly wonderful job rescuing some of the best material ever recorded by Bettye's contemporary Candi Staton! There's an achingly great southern soul feel to these tunes, which range from fragile soul ballads with sweet harmonies to poundingly righteous stompers. The feel is just loose enough, with roomy arrangements that leave plenty of space for Bettye's sweet vocals, but still with the ability to tighten up and pound at the crack of a whip! Masterful lost soul – and a joy to experience with a reverent reissue! Tracks include "Don't You Ever Get Tired (Of Hurting Me?)", "I'm Lonely For You", "Don't Touch Me", "Little Things Mean A Lot", "No Faith No Love", "Ain't That Peculiar", "Tell It Like It Is", "Today I Started Loving You Again" and lots more! Groundbreaking 70s work from Lee Scratch Perry – served up here with both work from The Upsetters, and a long list of "friends" – different singers who take the lead on some of the productions, which are then presented back to back with dub versions of the tracks that overflow with great contributions from a top-shelf lineup of musicians! Players on the cuts include Willie Lindo and Ernest Ranglin on guitars, Winston Wright on organ, Vin Gordon on trombone, and Richard Dirty Harry Hall on tenor – but the real talent here is clearly that of Perry, who's able to move between soulful vocal leads and some deeper, darker Black Ark sounds on the rhythms. Titles include "Mr Money Man" by Danny Hensworth, "Brother Noah" by The Shadows, "Traveling" by Debra Keese, "Ethiopian Land" by Peter & Paul Lewis, "Land Of Love" by Sons Of Light, "Peace & Love" by Shaumark & Robinson, "Freedom Street" by Eric Donaldson, "My Little Sandra" by Leo Graham, "Long Long Time" by Winston Heywood, "White Belly Rat" by Lee Perry, "A Wah Dat" by Junior Dread, and "Feelings" by Sharon Isaacs – and the set features dub versions of every cut by The Upsetters too! All That JazzGhibli Jazz (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), 2009. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 41.99 About December 4, 2024
A really great take on the music of Studio Ghibli – one that presents the sounds with very much the jazz promised in the title! The sound is very lean and stripped-down, with a small combo style on most numbers – all instruments handled by Tomoo Nogami, who mixes piano, bass, and drums with some other elements thrown into the mix – maybe more of an easygoing version of the clubjazz style of the Tokyo scene! Yuriko Kuwahara of Cosmic Home fame handles the vocals – all in Japanese, and again with a jazz-based approach that's nicely different than the originals. LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic/Sundazed, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
The second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". Joe BataanSalsoul (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Mericana/Salsoul, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
A landmark album from Joe Bataan – so great, that it made the entire record company change its name from their original Mericana to the better-known Salsoul – which would later rule the world with a host of disco classics! The record has Joe really bursting out after his seminal Latin Soul work of the late 60s – blending Latin rhythms and American soul into a whole new style of music – one that Joe called "Salsoul", because of it's mixture of salsa and soul – upbeat, funky, and definitely a precursor to the later sound that Salsoul would release with soul and funk groups. The blend is fantastic, a real milestone in the NuYorican scene – and handled perfectly by Joe on every cut! There's some massive Latin funk on here, including the tracks "Latin Strut" and "Aftershower Funk", plus some straighter Latin jazz, like "Sunny Gets Blue Mambo", and a great Latin Soul cut with English vocals called "Johnny". An overlooked treasure from the great Jorge Ben – an album recorded between the fame of his "Taj Mahal" hit and Africa Brasil classic – and a set that's every bit as wonderful as those two records! There's a tight, choppy groove to most of the set – that mix of samba, soul, and currents of American funk that Jorge created in his music – turned here towards some of the unusual themes that showed up on his Tabua De Esmeralda album, but maybe given a bit more punch, too – so that even without the benefit of language, the vocals and grooves on the set are completely captivating to a global audience! There's loads of fresh sounds here – some real under-discovered gems from Jorge's key 70s years – and titles include "Cuidado Com O Bulldog", "Zagueiro", "Para Ouvir No Radio (Luciana)", "Jorge De Capadocia", "Dumingaz", "Se Segura Malandro", and "Jesualda". An obscure soundtrack, but a great one too – a set of tunes of varying lengths and styles, but all coming together in a really great way! There's a few vocal numbers, and the music has this sound that progresses nicely from the earlier Music Machine 60s recordings from Sean Bonniwell – in ways that are similar to those that some of the supernatural and satanic rockers of the period were using guitars, organs, and other instruments in some mighty cool styles! The production, arrangements, and overall sonic presentation of the music is fantastic – way better than some of the images on the screen for which it was created – and titles include "Wolf Jazz", "Drum The Drum", "Night Time Sneak", "Day Of The Wolves", "Frantic Rock Surprise", "Carousel Insanity", "Drums & Sneaky Vibes", and "Snow Shine Groove". The record has plenty of rockish elements – fuzzy guitar, freaky organ, and some nicely groovy drums – and there's some vocals on a few tracks too, echoing some of the rockish modes that you'd hear some of the AIP soundtracks of the period, but much more integrated here with the instrumental numbers! The whole thing's a wonderfully groovy treat – and titles include "Man Of Many Pleasures", "Twenty Five Grand", "Sagittarius Ascends", "Athena", "Down To The Sky", "Night Of The Witches", and "Gravedigger Blues". Some of the moodiest, most majestic music we've ever heard from composer Joanna Brouk – which might be a surprise, given that the initial release of the album was only on a cassette with a relatively cheesy cover! There's a depth here that's almost like 4AD at its mid-80s height – very dark sounds inspired by the sea, served up in a mixture of processed voice, moog, buchla, flutes, whale songs, and other sonic elements – all with a richness that's wonderful all the way through – and which shows how, in the more sophisticated corners of the new age scene, the music really crossed over into other genres. A great second session of Christmas music from Willie Colon in the 70s – served up with the same warm spirits and earthy energy as the first! As before, Hector Lavoe's on vocals, Yomo Toro plays cuatro, and the group's got a rootsy sort of feel that recalls Willie's excellent Good Band & Ugly album – that rootsy style that Willie Colon used a bit in the mid 70s, after charging things up with his youthful break from tradition at the end of the 60s! The cover has a great image of Santa and his helpers gangstering a car mechanic – and Joe Torres turns out some great piano lines, next to the percussion of Milton Cardona and Jose Mangual. The music's a unique blend of roots from Guyana coming into play with the changes of the 70s London scene – and the group have a way of reaching out past borders, past familiar styles, and making a whole new world of their own! Bob DarinCommitment (blue vinyl pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Direction, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99 24.99
Really fantastic later work from Bobby Darin – material that's quite different than the simple pop of his early Atco years, and even the jazzier style he used earlier on in the 60s! The set is one of two issued by the Direction label – and features Bobby taking off from some of the Tim Hardin-inspired modes he was using later on at Atlantic – picking up some of the deeper themes of the earlier singer-songwriter years – and singing in a very moody, contemplative style! According to some, Darin was aware that his health only gave him a few more years to live – which was part of the introspection of the music – and although the style owes a lot to Tim Hardin and some of his contemporaries, the songs are all originals by Darin – with some elements that are very different than before. Tracks include "Hey Magic Man", "Light Blue", "Distractions", and "Song For a Dollar". Features four bonus tracks too – "Sweet Reasons", "Maybe We Can Get It Together", "Baby Man", and "RX Pyro (Prescription Fire)". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic array of really cool songs – all written and recorded by Tom Dawes of The Cyrkle – as part of a big career as a jingle writer after his group cut a famous theme song for 7 Up! The music here is great – work from a time when jingles for TV and radio ads were like mini songs in and of themselves – often as catchy as anything on the charts, if not more so – so that the tunes you'd hear for a few short seconds would stick in your head all day long! If you dig sunshine pop, there's plenty to love here – and remember that the great Roger Nichols also gave the world a wonderful tune that was originally designed as a jingle. Some of the tracks here never made it to the TV screen, others are classics – and the set includes songs written for Windex, GI Joe, Alka Seltzer, Calgon, Stridex, Murine, Hartford Insurance, Thom McCann, Life Savers, Timex, Ford, and many others. An unusual Guido & Maurizio DeAngelis score, done for an early 80s film that was an answer to the Conan phenomenon on the screens at the time – and served up in a style that nicely bridges cinematic generations! Given the fantasy setting, the whole thing is almost a return to the gladiator films of Italian cinematic past – but done with more electric instrumentation, and styles that also really fit the 80s as well – almost making the music something of a side chapter in the way that horror scoring had shifted at the time too. A really lovely second album from Iris DeMent, her first for Warner Brothers – and on that has the shift to a bigger label just serving to help Iris find an even better platform for her really unique sound! There's still few singers like DeMent in country music – an artist who can both reach back to legacies up in the hills, yet have an approach that's as open and honest as later generations as well – but all without sounding forced, retro, or like she's trying to be alt-anything at all! Instead, there's a completely down to earth, unadorned quality to the record – a real gem at a time when so many other country singers and labels were going "hot" – just gentle acoustic backing, more country than bluegrass – and the great vocals of Iris right up front on tunes that include "Troublesome Waters", "Childhood Memories", "Sweet Is The Melody", "You've Done Nothing Wrong", "No Time To Cry", "My Life", and "Easy's Gettin Harder Every Day". Searing work from this legendary group – and a set that stands as a stunning tribute to the raw power of the Northwest scene at its best! Don & The Goodtimes cut some material later that was a bit more produced in the studio – but much of the music here is raw, raunchy, and very garagey – the sorts of cuts that would have the group playing non-stop parties on the coastal scene that would go way into the wee hours of the night – all with a hard-burning sense of energy that matches famous scenemates like The Sonics, Wailers, and Kingsmen – the last of whom had ties to the group. The group pick up a bit of Cali pop as the tunes move on, but still keep that dark edge that makes them so great – a vibe that hardly seems to be promising good times at all – as you'll hear on cuts that include "The Witch", "Jolly Green Giant", "You Were Just A Child", "Straight Scepter", "Blue Turns To Grey", "Hey There Mary Mae", "Little Sally Tease", "Tall Cool One", "Long Green", "Make It", and "You Did It Before". The album is one long suite built around a spare, electric bass-driven theme – a slow funk riff that's been sampled countless times over the years, and which has gotten the album continuous play on both sides of the Atlantic for many many years. The mighty Jean-Claude Vannier handles the arrangements, and Serge mutters the lyrics over the top, in a raspy loud whisper – while the funky rhythms dart in and out of odd washes of sound, and unusual eerie sounds. There's a very strong soundtrack feel to the album, as waves of music envelop the lyrics – tripped out in funky beats that have become legendary over the years, thanks to some very famous samples! Titles include "En Melody", "Cargo Culte", "Ballade De Melody Nelson", "Valse De Melody", "Ah! Melody", and "L'Hotel Particulier". Great new LP reissue package – with 180 gram vinyl, notes, an interview, and even lyrics in English & French! LP, Vinyl record album

Galaxie 500Uncollected Noise New York – 1988 to 1990 (blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Silver Current, Late 1980s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99 31.99
A wonderfully huge addition to the small catalog of genius from Galaxie 500 – two dozen tracks recorded over the course of a time the band were working in the legendary Noise New York studios – under the production genius of the mighty Kramer at a time when his creative talents were at an all time high! There's a nice edge to the music that you might not remember from some of the group's warmer, more commercial moments – and Kramer has this perfect way of bringing out some of the darker currents alongside the tuneful approach of the vocals – that trademark blend that made the early work from the group such important work in the legacy of fuzz and echo – sounds that would clearly shape so many others in the decade to come. Titles include "Victory Garden", "Never Get To Heaven", "Moonshot", "Final Day", "Them", "Here She Comes Now", "Ceremony", "Cold Night", "King Of Spain", "Jerome", "Can't Believe It's Me", and "On The Floor". Gang StarrNo More Mr Nice Guy (2LP red & black vinyl pressing with bonus tracks) ... LP
Wild Pitch/Vinyl Me Please, 1989. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $22.99 39.99
The classic debut of Gang Starr – and a record that would really help chart the direction for hip hop in the decade to come! And yes, the set's not the first in this mode – but the production work of DJ Premier alone here sets a whole new standard for smart samples, creative rhythms, and really matching the groove to the lyrical interplay – qualities that are still continued when Mark The 45 King helps out on a few tracks too! The duo have a way of serving up smart lyrics with just the right work on the mic – yet all at a level that never hits you over the head – so that the record can easily travel between the streets, the clubs, and the kind of ears tuned towards something smarter than the rest. A classic all the way through – with cuts that include "Manifest", "DJ Premier In Deep Concentration", "Positivity", "Jazz Music", "Gotch U", "2 Steps Ahead", "Knowledge", "Gusto", "Cause & Effect", and "No More Mr Nice Guy". Features a whole album of bonus material – with cuts that include "Here's The Proof", "The Lesson", "Dedication", "Positivity (rmx)", "Manifest (rmx)", "Gusto (inst)", and "No More Mr Nice Guy (return of the bass version)". Marvin GayeWhat's Going On (gatefold cover) ... LP
Tamla, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the few cases in the history of pop music where the record is worth all the hype! Marvin blew everyone's mind when he unleashed this amazing suite of political soul tunes – not only just because he'd moved past the simple love songs of earlier years, but also because he was working with an amazingly complicated approach to soul music, one that would touch the work of others for years to come. David Van DePitte arranged and conducted the whole album – with soaring orchestrations mixed with smooth modern soul, in a style that reminds us a lot of the work of Charles Stepney at Cadet, who'd been doing this sort of thing for years but with less success. In the hands of Marvin Gaye, though, the material has an amazing quality – and all the disparate elements of the album are fused together in one powerful message by Marvin's incredible voice. One that we never tire of, and a record to be listened to all the way through every time. Titles include "What's Goin On", "Save The Children", "Flyin High (In The Friendly Sky)", "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", and "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent reissue on heavy vinyl, in a glossy gatefold cover.)

Tlahoun GessesseTlahoun Gessesse – Ethiopian Urban Modern Music Vol 4 ... LP
Buda/Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1970s. New Copy ... $24.99 29.99
A stunning set of vocal recordings by Tlahoun Gessesse – one of the most important singers during the golden age of Ethiopian Music – caught here on a set of sides that sadly saw that period coming to an end! The tracks on the set are mostly from the early 70s, a time that saw great political changes in Ethiopia – and tremendous censorship and restrictions on cultural production. Gessesse's vocals during this time are perhaps even more melancholy and heartfelt than before, and he's working here on a number of sides with the legendary Mulatu – with arrangements that have a angular, almost modernist edge. Despite the language barriers that keep us from understanding what Gessesse's singing about, there's an incredibly evocative quality to the work that transcends time and place – and titles include "Alegntaye", "Aykedashem Iebe", "Ene Negn Wey Antchi", "Yene Felagote", "Beyet New Mengedu", "Lantchi Biye", "Tchuheten Betsemu", and two versions of "Kulun Mankwalesh". First time on reissue vinyl for this material – which originally appeared on the 17th volume of the Ethiopiques series. LP, Vinyl record album

Andre Gibson & Universal Togetherness BandApart – Demos 1980 to 1984 (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Numero, Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 24.99
That's Andre Gibson sitting at an electric piano on the cover – an image that will give you very much an idea of the record – as the music here is more personal and intimate than previous recordings by the Universal Togetherness Band – and tracks that actually seem to show a lot more depth and soul overall! The mixture of Gibson's voice and Rhodes is like hearing some demo material from the Donny Hathaway side of the spectrum – definitely more 70s-styled than you'd guess from the date range in the title, but a bit more gritty overall – and mostly with electric piano and vocals, on all numbers, with occasional added instrumentation thrown in from time to time. Titles include "Bring Me Home", "Love Changes Life's Changes", "All My Pals", "Thankful For You", "Say I Will", "Stuck On A Thrill", "Don't It Feel Good", "I Wanna Take You Away", "Breakaway", and "I'm Falling". Allen GinsbergLion For Real – Reborn (clear vinyl pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Great Jones/Shimmy Disc, 1989. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 32.98
A really wonderful later project from the legendary poet Allen Ginsberg – a set put together by Hal Willner, and one that may well be better than any of his previous efforts to blend together words and music! The tunes often still have that hypnotic quality of Ginsberg's earlier recordings, but maybe with less of a hippie sense of self-consciousness – more understated, and handled by a very hip lineup of downtown New York players who include Steve Swallow on bass, Gary Window on tenor, Beaver Harris on drums, and Marc Ribot, Arto Lindsay, and Bill Frisell on guitars! Titles include "Scribble", "Complaint Of The Skeleton To Time", "The Shrouded Stranger", "Cleveland The Flats", "The End", "Sunset", and "The Lion For Real". This expanded 2LP version has been completely remixed and remastered – and includes eight songs not on the original album! LP, Vinyl record album
