Mick RonsonOnly After Dark – The Complete Mainman Recordings (Slaughter On 10th Avenue/Play Don't Worry/1976 sessions/rarities) (4CD set) ... CD
RCA/Cherry Red (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99
Ziggy Stardust guitar genius Mick Ronson issued a pair of 70s albums on the David Bowie Mainman imprint for RCA – and both of those records are included here, plus a huge amount of never-issued tracks and bonus material too! First up is Slaughter On 10th Avenue – Mick Ronson's first and probably best solo album – an adventurous set of glam pop that's both weird and catchy, naturally featuring some fantastic guitar pyrotechnics. Fascinatingly, Ronson starts the record with a crooning cover of "Love Me Tender", with his recognizable riffs kicking in a bit after his plaintive vocals – but it's that kind of anything goes weirdness that makes the album loads of fun, kind of closer to Queen style pomp than Bowie's astral trailblazing. Titles include "Growing Up & I'm Fine", "Music Is Lethal", I'm The One" and the Richard Rodgers penned title tune. Next is Play Don't Worry – catchy glam pop from guitarist Mick Ronson – the blazing player best remembered for his work with Bowie, here blending punchy riffs and heavier sounds with bubbly hooks and playful production touches. Our favorite tunes showcase the heavy guitar fuzz, but the oddball cutesy songs are endearing in their strange way. Ronson kind of throws a bunch of stuff at the wall here, and the stuff that sticks gets you nodding your head and smiling at the more innocuous touches. Titles include "Billy Porter", "This Is For You", a weird, piano peppered cover of the Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat", "Empty Bed", "This Is For You", "Woman" and more. Both albums come with bonus tracks that include live tracks and rare demos, plus some outtakes and an interview too. CD3 features rare 1976 sessions – with titles that include "Hard Life", "Takin A Train", "I'd Give Anything To See You", "Hard Headed Woman", "Roll Like The River", "Angel No 9", and "Junkie For Your Love". CD4 features more rarities – tracks that include demo and live takes of material on CD3 – the live material of which was recorded in Buffalo in 1976. 60 tracks in all – and a nice booklet of notes! Carlton Jumel Smith1634 Lexington Avenue ... CD
Timmion, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
The long-overdue debut of Carlton Jumel Smith – a soul singer with roots at the Harlem address listed in the title, and who's slowly been working his way around the globe in recent years! Those global travels are key to the success of this set – as Smith works very tightly in Finland's Timmion studios with Cold Diamond & Mink – who bring to his music what the Dap-Tones or El Michels have brought to other singers in the deep funk spectrum! Yet the sound here is definitely different than those efforts, too – as Smith is a soul stylist with a nicely open range – able to hit some late 60s sweet soul moments at times, then going for deeper, more righteous sounds at others – all of which really fit the instrumental range of CD&M, who get a bit of help on horn arrangements from Jukka Eskola, in addition to their usual tight sound at the core. Titles include "Love Our Love Affair", "I'd Better", "You Gonna Need Me", "Help Me", "Woman You Made Me", "We're All We Got", and "I Can't Love You Anymore". CD

Julian LageLove Hurts ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 17.99
Julian Lage is often one of the more compelling contemporary jazz guitarists on record – and this time around, he definitely lives up to that legacy – by offering up unusual trio takes on the music of Ornette Coleman, David Lynch, and Keith Jarrett – while also adding in a few of his own great tunes too! Lage often has a bit of fuzz around the edges – not full distortion, but also not the clean, crisp sound that's more often heard with jazz guitar – and that fullness of tone really makes things interesting, and often pushes out a sound that feels like a lot more than a trio – especially when the bass of Jorge Roeder and drums of Dave King get a bit more dynamic. Titles include "In Heaven", "Tomorrow Is The Question", "Trudgin", "Love Hurts", "In Circles", "Encore A", "The Windup", and "Crying". CD

Christian McBrideChristian McBride's New Jawn ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2018. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
Bassist Christian McBride works here with a mighty striking group – a quartet that features Josh Evans on trumpet, Marcus Strickland on tenor and bass clarinet, and Nasheet Waits on drums – all players who give this record an edge that we're not used to hearing from Christian! The music was recorded live in St Louis, which might be part of the sound – but there's clearly a new mode of expression going on here from McBride, especially when he works his bass with lots of offbeat tones and bold moments that really seem to go past the usual! Waits really keeps the energy up too, and Strickland and Evans soar in all the right moments – on titles that include "The Middle Man", "Ballad Of Ernie Washington", "Ke-Kelli Sketch", "Walkin Funny", "Seek The Source", and "Kush". Christian SandsReach ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2017. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Christian Sands is a mighty warm piano player – a musician who's clearly got a great reach and range on the keyboard, but always comes across with a very personal, spontaneous sort of vibe! Sands could clearly overstate his case if he wanted – but he's also one of those pianists who know just how to hang back in the right way – letting the space around the notes do just as much work as the notes themselves – in a beautifully-linked core trio that includes Yasushi Nakamura on bass and Marcus Baylor on drums. Other elements come into the music at times – tenor and bass clarinet from Marcus Strickland, guitar from Gilad Hekselman, and percussion from Cristian Rivera – but it's the core cohesion of the trio that really makes the record sparkle – a fantastic setting for Sands' well-timed, well-chosen notes. Titles include "Song Of The Rainbow People", "Armando's Song", "Gangstalude", "Use Me", "Reaching For The Sun", "Freefall", and "Oyeme". CD

ATA (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $22.99
A contemporary record, but one we'd rank right up there with the moodiest, most exotic African funk albums of the 70s – especially the gems we've discovered through the Ethiopiques series! These guys play in a style that certainly references Ethiopian reeds and keyboard work of the 70s, but with a groove that's even funkier too – an understanding of the possibilities of a deep funk combo, but expressed through a much richer, more organic vibe – so that nothing's ever forced or faked at all, and the music is wonderfully captivating throughout. Production is perfect for this sort of set – and titles include "Pinch Of The Death Nerve", "Viking Of 5th Avenue", "Cave Of Brahma", "Night Of The Sorcerer", and "Suur Toll". LP, Vinyl record album

Jonny TrunkWobbly Sounds – A Collection Of British Flexi Discs ... Book
Four Corners (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
One of the coolest record books we've ever seen – a smaller take on the album art format, but one that focuses exclusively on flexi discs – those thin little records which were usually given away free, and which are usually pretty hard-pressed to survive the passage of time! Yet author Jonny Trunk is one of the few folks who really know how to take care of ephemera like this – as you might know from his longstanding work on the Trunk Records label – and his presentation of fab flexis from the UK scene is nothing short of mindblowing! These aren't the boring plain black flexis that were often included in magazines – but instead, full color discs that are every bit as great to look at as they are to hear – a wealth of rare records from the 50s onward, all presented here in vivid color, on pages that are about to open a whole new avenue in our record collecting lives. The range of records is great – some feature celebrities, some music stars, others have ads, or spoken words – and many are marketing vehicles, especially from the 60s and 70s, which was a time when the format really took off. The softcover book is full color throughout, features over 150 records, and also includes an essay on the format by Jonny! Book

VariousWest End Mixtape Sessions Vol 1 – Mixed By Marley Marl ... CD
West End, Late 70s/Early 80s/2005. Used 2 CDs ... $4.99
Marley Marl cuts it up with the classic West End catalog – serving up a funky mix of classic club, spacey disco, and a few great old school tracks as well! Given how strongly the West End work has been reissued in the hands of more club-based DJs over the years, it's great to hear the material given a hip hop twist – especially because Marley's choice of cuts includes a few key numbers that have fallen off of other West End sets, and which are more than welcome here, especially because they really increase the edge of the mix! CD 1 features a 16 track mix with the cuts "Heartbeat" by Taana Gardner, "No Sense" by D'Bora, "Fresh Avenue" by Diamind D, "Get Into The Mix" by DJ Divine, "Sessomato" by Sessomato, "B-Beat Classic" by B+, "Do It To The Music" by Raw Silk, "Give Your Body Up To The Music" by Billy Nichols, "Heat You Up" by Shirley Lites, "Is It All Over My Face" by Loose Joints, "Don't Make Me Wait" by NYC Peech Boys, and "Ride On The Rhythm" by Mahogany. ✨✧ Erroll GarnerReady – Take One ... CD
Columbia, 1967/1969/1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Never-heard music from the legendary Erroll Garner – unissued studio recordings from the end of the 60s and the start of the 70s – brought together here to form one of the most striking albums in his catalog! Garner's perhaps a bit more intimate in these settings, and is certainly more developed, too – playing with a complexity that's breathtaking, and which maybe surpasses some of his commercial albums from the time – a sense of tone, color, and timing that hew strongly to his legacy, but also open up a constant array of surprises along the way. Most numbers are in a "trio plus" mode – with drums from Jimmie Smith, bass from Ike Issacs or Ernest McCarty, and some great congas from Jose Mangual – who brings an extra rhythmic kick that really seems to set Erroll free. Titles include "Sunny", "High Wire", "Latin Digs", "Chase Me", "Back To You", "Caravan", "Down Wylie Avenue", and "Wild Music". CD

Warner (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This great Japanese series moves farther into the 70s than before – and brings together a great array of pop rock nuggets from the mighty Warner Brothers vaults! The music is partly soft rock of the post Sunshine years, but also shares other sweet 70s modes – maybe a pre-AOR sort of vibe, when tuneful songs could be well-produced, but still sound relatively personal presented here by artists with a surprising mix of original styles. There's lots of surprises on this 21 track set – songs we'd forgotten about, or never heard at all – and titles include "Eden Rock" by Fifth Avenue Band, "Gas Lamps & Clay" by Blues Image, "Ain't That Peculiar" by Fanny, "Beverly Glen" by Country, "Only The Children Know" by Jeanie Greene, "Flying To The Morning" by Rosebud, "All I Need" by Batdorf & Rodney, "Cruel Wind" by Eric Kaz, "Lover Baby Friend" by Dana Cooper, "Fineline" by Ned Doheny, "Ever Since You're Gone" by Brinsley Shwarz, "Gotta Get Next To Somebody" by Brigati, and "Occapella" by Van Dyke Parks. ✨✧ Booker T & The MGsGreen Onions ... LP
Stax, 1962. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A legendary album of Memphis soul – and a full length set that helped redefine the sound of instrumental music in the 60s! The record's a monumental follow-up to Booker T & The MGs' huge hit single "Green Onions" – an extremely seductive organ-based instrumental that the band cooked up while just messing around in the studio – and it's filled with other organ-heavy grooves played by this tight Memphis quartet – a group who were just starting out at this point, but already had a sound that's unlike anyone else! The work of Booker T is especially nice – Hammond with a bit more punch than other combos of this nature – backed by some wicked guitar from Steve Cropper, bass from Lewis Steinberg, and drums from Al Jackson. The set features a nice mix of covers and original tunes – with titles that include "Green Onions", "I Got A Woman", "Twist & Shout", "Lonely Avenue", "Comin Home Baby", "Mo Onions", "Behave Yourself", and "Rinky Dink". JVC (Japan), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really unique album from Japanese jazz combo Soil & Pimp Sessions – music done for an animated film, and handled in a style that's a bit different than the group's usual sound! If you know and love S&P as much as we do, you'll know that they've got a great talent for fast, frenetic instrumentation – always hewn to a groove, but always pretty darn intense. Here, they expand the palette a bit more – working through modes that are sometimes richer in tone and structure, and which add occasional electric elements to their acoustic work – kind of this beautiful mash-up of jazzy grooves with anime soundtrack standards, but at a level that's way cooler than the best of that second category. Titles include "Phantom Of Franklin Avenue", "Tracking", "Before The Dawn", "Thinking Of You", "In The Gloom Of The Forest", and "The Light & The Shadowland". CD

A legendary bassist in a really top-shelf group – a tight lineup that may well make the set one of the best records from Buster Williams in many years! Williams has that tight, tremendous groove that we've loved in his sound for decades – forged here with a killer quartet that includes lots of sharp soprano and alto sax work from Steve Wilson, piano from George Colligan, and drums from Lenny White – a group who can take off with power when needed, then hit some of those more introspective, moody moments that Williams could always bring to his music! There's a great depth of spirit to the record – which features original tracks by Williams, plus one more by each member of the band – titles that include "Where Giants Dwell", "Song Of The Outcasts", "Sisko", "Ariana Anai", "Lost On 4th Avenue", "Stumblin", "Triumph", "Briana", and "Audacity". ✨✧ VariousFunky Chicken – Belgian Grooves From The 70s ... CD
Sdban (Belgium), 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic funk from the Belgian scene of the 70s – a really mad mix of sounds and styles, and a really revelatory set overall! Few people might use the words "Belgium" and "funk" in the same sentence – but that may well change after this sweet set gets a few spins – as the whole thing's a stunning array of groovers that not only match the best jazz, funk, and sound library tracks from other European scenes in the 70s – they also do a great job of taking on the best America had to offer too! Belgium was no stranger to soul and funk – given its fervent 60s soul collectors scene, and the nation's role as a crossroads in Europe – which left it open to plenty of influence from visiting musicians, including American artists as well. You can definitely hear all that coming into play here – as the work is nicely fresh, and very free of overdone cliches or easy references – as these guys all take the best bits that might have influenced them, and jumbled them up into something really new. The scope of sounds is wonderful – and titles include "Funky Tramway" by Mad Unity, "Sunshine Star" by Open Sky Unit, "Gimme Some More Of That" by Plus, "Funky" by Andre Brasseur, "Avenue Louise" by Black Blood, "Music & Co" by Les Helions, "Balek" by Placebo, "Librium" by Chicken Curry & His Pop Percussion Orchestra, "Top Less" by Alex Scorier, "Stories" by Chakachas, "Ostinato Bass" by Rene Costy, "Memories" by Amadeo, "Viva Boma" by Cos, "Pop In Three" by The Rapture, "Smoke" by Leo Cavallo, "Marakesh" by Hein Huysmans Kwintet, "One For You" by Doug Lucas, "Put Everything Together" by Plus, "Lord Funk" by Super Funk Special, and "Humpty Dumpty" by Placebo. An insane amount of material from British 80s soul heroes Five Star – a group who always seem to have an upbeat, catchy sort of vibe – one that holds strong in their music from the early 80s years up through all the changes in R&B at the start of the 90s! This package not only features every single album the group ever recorded, but also features lots of unusual bonus tracks, 12" single mixes, and other material too – 131 tracks in all, and that doesn't include the material on the DVD – all packaged in a very cool 12" square book-style cover, filled with pages of notes and images too. Albums include Luxury Of Life, Silk & Steel, Between The Lines, Rock The World, Five Star, and Shine – and there's three more CDs that just feature 7" and 12" single mixes too. Maybe most interesting are the bonus tracks added to the albums – as many aren't remixes of LP tracks, but instead include unusual material like "The Man", "Have A Good Time", "Forever Yours", "Stone Court", "Love Games", "Pure Energy", "First Avenue", "I'm Gonna Make This A Night You Will Never Forget", "I Like The Way You Dance", "Don't Stop", "The Mews", "Sweetest Innocence", and "Sound Sweet". ✨✧ Christian McBride Big BandBringin' It ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
Excellent large group material from Christian McBride – an artist who may well be one of the most hard-working men in jazz these days! McBride's big band is always a treat – as the group soars with a soulful energy that matches Christian's smaller group material, but really expands on the energy of his music – yet still always finds a way to make the leader's instrument stand strongly out front – a feat that only a rare few bassists, like Ray Brown, managed to work with a group like this! And yet the bass never seems to overly state itself either – just act with a rich sort of leadership role that sets fire to the horns – in a lineup that includes solo work from Michael Dease on trombone, Steve Wilson on alto, Todd Bashore on flute and alto, Ron Blake on tenor, Rodney Jones on guitar, and Xavier Davis on piano. The album explodes with color and feeling at every twist and turn – and titles include "Thermo", "Youthful Bliss", "Sahara", "Upside Down", "Used Ta Could", "Optimism", and "Gettin To It". CD

Resonance, Late 50s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $22.99 24.99
Really fantastic early work from guitar genius Wes Montgomery – a series of live recordings from his Indianapolis roots – done at a level that's quite different than his bigger records of the 60s! Even at this early age, Wes is already a chromatic master – able to get sounds out of his guitar that are so different than most of his contemporaries – playing in a small combo mode on most tracks, but with less of the R&B influence than most postwar guitarists. Instead, Montgomery is pure jazz all the way through, but also without that too-clean tone that some folks were going for – just a great focus on color and open, honest tone – in the company of musicians who include Carl Perkins and Buddy Montgomery on piano, Mel Rhyne on Hammond, Monk Montgomery on bass, David Baker on trombone, and David Young on tenor. Those last two players only make a few appearances – as most groups are horn-less, which gives Wes even more solo space – on titles that include "Four", "Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea", "It's You Or No One", "Ecaroh", "Sandu", "Whisper Not", "Four On Six", "Mr Walker", "Round Midnight", "West Coast Blues", "Tune Up", "So What", and "The End Of A Love Affair".
