Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mr Bongo really goes back to its roots here – and returns to the kind of rare global gems that first made us fall in love with the label in the first place! Over 20 years ago, Mr Bongo were one of the key global forces in opening up people's ears to the sounds of funk and soul from around the globe – digging up rare nuggets from out of the way places that might have echoed American styles, but turned them on their ear – or the kinds of cuts that were completely unique, but which could stand next to the kind of funky 45s that were being sampled for hip hop! This collection brings together some of the best cuts that continue that legacy – some rare singles, some obscure European tracks, and lots of others you never would have discovered otherwise – with titles that include "Deixa A Tristeza", "Piranha" by Alipio Martins, "Seara De Oxala" by Barbosa, "Mathar" by Dave Pike Set, "Freak" by Tappa Zukie, "Mama Hot Daddy Cool" by Big Youth, "Fish & Funjee" by Lantei Lamptey, "Karam Bani" by Buari, "Handsome Boy (parts 1 & 2)" by The Rwenzoris, "He's Forever" by King James Version, "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver" by Cortez, and "Can't Live Without You" by Connie Laverne. Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A record club that's way way cooler than the Columbia House version of the 70s – as the Mr Bongo take on the format features only rare funk tracks from around the world! Most of these tunes here are from vintage Brazilian and African sources – but the tunes still have plenty of elements that you'd know from American soul of the 70s – funky drums, basslines, sweet keyboards, and soulful vocals – served up alongside less familiar elements that really keep things interesting, and which makes for a hell of a compilation overall! Most of these tracks were previously issued on very limited Mr Bongo 45s – brought together here with a set list that includes "Ebony Game" by Guy Chevas, "Awake O Zion" by Elbertina Twinkie Clark, "Family Planning" by Kiru Stars, "Nao Adianta" by Leny Andrade, "Samba Maneiro" by Rosa Maria, "Obrigado Corcovado" by Tom & Dito, "Capoeira" by Joao Diaz, "Harari" by The Beaters, "Merry Go Round" by The Equatics, and "Ecology" by Anubis. Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. Near Mint- ... $18.99
Two of the greatest songs ever from the Incredible Bongo Band – brought together here in a special limited edition picture sleeve! "Bongo Rock" is a killer – a tune with a massive break that's been sampled countless times, and which has this amazing percussion part in the middle, mixed with lots of very cool horn effects! "Apache" is maybe even more classic – one of THE cuts that gave birth to hip hop – with a break you'll recognize instantly, and this mad groove that's plenty great on its own! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Disorient/Mr Bongo (UK), 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best new Brazilian records we've heard in years! The album's a killer batch of Brazilian jazz tracks – with a mixture of classic fusion grooves filtered through a spot of 90s production – and the result is incredible! The band is fantastically tight – and features Dom Um Romao on percussion, Ben Mitchell on keyboards, and lots of other nice piano, sax, and flute. We love this one to death – and each time we play it, the record seems to open up on a whole new level of jazziness. Certainly one of our favorites from Mr. Bongo – and a darn nice piece of musicianship. Titles include "Corcovado" (not the bossa track, but a beautiful 11 minute jam!), "Chacha-mambu", "Jose Cuervo", "Uno Mas Tiempo", "Vasco Da Gama", and "Cubana Yama Ya". CD

✨✧ Incredible Bongo BandBongo Rock (180 gram deluxe 40th anniversary edition) ... LP
Pride/Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A landmark album that is perhaps the single most influential beat source in hip hop! The record was the brainchild of bongo player Michael Viner – who also happened to be running the Pride subsidiary of MGM at the time. Viner's got a meeeeeean touch on the bongo, hitting it hard and funky like the best 70s conga players – and his approach to the instrument is kind of like a funky update of popular instrumental styles laid down on guitar by The Ventures or on moog by Hot Butter. This album features the classics "Apache" and "Bongo Rock" – both with monster funky breakdowns that showed up on a heck of a lot of hip hop records over the years – plus loads of other goodies like "Last Bongo In Belgium" and "Bongolia". Excellent stuff – and darn hard to find! (We can still remember how stunned we were when we found our first copy in a Canadian record store back in 1987 – and even then we had to pay plenty!) LP, Vinyl record album
(Super-heavy 40th anniversary reissue – on the same mirror-style cover as the original, with heavy tip-on cover!)

A beautiful record from Akofa Akoussah – a singer from Togo who's equally gifted in funky and sweeter soul styles! Half the record is full-on funk, and we'd swear that Lafayette Afro Rock Band must have had a hand in some of the instrumentation (possible, as it was recorded in Paris) – as there's reed lines and trippy electric elements that feel like they're very much their work – especially the way they could make things wig out around the edges of the mix! And if they're not on the record, the sound is very similar on the funky numbers – which then leaves the sweeter tracks to bring in a bit more of an acoustic balance, and really foreground Akofa's amazing voice. Titles include "Tango", "La Lem", "Mitso Aseye", "Dandou Kodjo", "G Blem Di", and "Kimumbu". CD

Gyedu-Blay AmbolleyAmbolley ... LP
Cougar/Mr Bongo (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 21.98
A really well-crafted set of funk from the legendary Gyedu-Blay Ambolley – maybe best known for his material in the mid 70s, but sounding equally wonderful here on an album from the start of the 80s! The sound is sharper and more sophisticated than before – recorded in London, with a great ear for the many possibilities of basslines, keyboard parts, and rhythms – used in modes that embrace a wider range of soul styles, but which also don't sound anything at all like mainstream R&B! A few tracks feature more familiar highlife rhythms, but most are in this new breed laid down by Ambolley – on titles that include "Walking Down The Street", "Frafranta", "Adwoa", "Cut Your Coat", "Cause I Love You", and a great funky remake of "Simigwa" – maybe worth the price of the album alone, thanks to percussion that almost rivals the Incredible Bongo Band. An amazing bit of Brazilian funk – and the best album ever by this exciting soulful duo! The record's their first, and it's got a crackling intensity that you don't always find on their other albums – a groove that mixes hard samba with bass-heavy funk, with a sound that makes them one of the most important forces of the Samba Soul generation! There's lots here to love if you like the heavy grooves of Jorge Ben or Tim Maia – but the duo also have a really great approach of their own – especially in the way they'll trade voices back and forth, over grooves that also have plenty of back/forth action too! Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $10.99 11.98
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". Banda Black RioRebirth (aka Movimento) ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 2002. Used ... $14.99
New work from one of the greatest Brazilian soul groups of the 70s – and they're still pretty darn great! The album's smoother and perhaps a bit less funk-oriented than some of Banda Black Rio's classic work – but it's still a perfect blend of Brazilian rhythms and instrumentation with American soul, handled in a mode that reminds us of recent albums by Ed Motta, with soulful vocals out front, and compressed instrumentation grooving around in a smooth funky style that's reminiscent of the glory days of mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire. The classic reference is no surprise, though, as the group's got some help from Brazilian soul legend Cassiano – who does the arrangements on some of the album's tracks – and a few other tracks feature remixes from London talents like Faze Action and others! Titles include "Samba Blum", "Aquarius", "Magia Do Prazer", "Nova Guanabara", "Candeia", and "Tabuleiro Da Cor". The whole thing's great – right up there with the best work of the samba soul generation, and the kind of record that would make the group huge, even if it were the only one they ever cut! CD

One of the greatest jazz vocal albums of all time – and one of the first true moments of genius from a young Dee Dee Bridgewater! The album's a Japanese only release (proof that they're always hipper to our jazz artists than we are!) – and it features Dee Dee singing material that's quite different than her later R&B-inflected sides from the late 70s – very soaring and spiritual work, delivered in a way that set a whole new standard for jazz at the time! Backing is by a small combo with brothers Ron and Cecil Bridgewater, plus Roland Hanna on acoustic and electric piano, George Mraz on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums and percussion – but the star of the set is always Dee Dee, who sparkles beautifully on the album's classic versions of "Afro Blue" and "Little B's Poem" – both of which have been redone by many other singers over the years. One of the few albums ever cut by the team of Octavio Burnier and Claudio Cartier – a mid 70s Brazilian duo with a sweet and soulful finish! Both Burnier and Cartier play guitar – but not in a spare, Baden Powell-like way. Instead, they've got a sound that's very full – touched with much of the Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s, and given a smooth electric finish that makes for some very nice grooves. One of the richest, most expressive albums ever from the great Gal Costa – a set from her immediate post-Tropicalia years, and one that shows that she's got a lot more to offer than just a wild sense of experimentation! Gilberto Gil is the musical director here – with help from Rogerio Duprat and Arthur Verocai – and the album's got the lofty feel you'd expect from all three talents – a rich blend of all the modern developments in Brazilian music that had taken place in the 60s, but infused with a newly rootsy sense as well – one that takes the whole thing back to a personal, expressive territory that's really wonderful. Instrumentationincludes work on keyboards by Wagner Tiso and Tenorio Jr, plus a bit of guitar from Roberto Menescal – and Gal does a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Relance" – alongside other tracks that include "Passarinho", "Da Maior Imortancia", "India", "Volta", and the funky "Pontos De Luz". A great one from Nigerian bandleader, composer and multi-instrumentalist Peter King – working in a funkier mode here than on the more jazz and roots based groove of his first record! The highlife sound is still a vital component, but on this one, Peter embraces a harder hitting approach on the percussion end, with some straight up Afro Funk elements that suits it incredibly well. It's got a hypnotic vibe throughout! 70s soul from Brazil – and a tremendously strong effort from the legendary Tim Maia! This record was Tim's first after an initial run on Polydor – and it shows Maia tightening up his groove even more, but still avoiding the slicker sounds of later years. There's a really focused sound here that's totally great – one that shows that Maia's work was hardly just some happy cross-cultural accident, and instead the careful work of an artist who was out to challenge the best American soul acts of the time! There's a warm little groove to most of the tracks – tripping along lightly in the vein of some of our favorite US mellow soul from the mid 70s – an approach that's mostly soul, but with some funky undercurrents – and often smooth, but never cloying or overly commercial. Titles include "Ride Twist & Roll", "Flores Belas", "Let It All Hang Out", "Sem Voce", "E Necessario", "Leva O Meu Blue", "Pense Menos", and "Musica Para Betinha". LP, Vinyl record album

Gallo/Mr Bongo (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 21.98
A really unusual album from the South African scene of the 80s – served up by a blind quartet who partly echo the styles of other vocal ensembles of the period, but done with a mish-mash of styles that really keeps the whole thing interesting! The album's maybe best-remembered for a few clubby groovers that bring the harmonies together with some post-disco boogie modes – and those cuts dominate the record, balanced by a few mellower ballads and more spiritual numbers. Titles include "Toitoi", "Lenyalo", "O Mohau", "Ha Se Nna Fela", "Khomo Tsaka Deile Kae", and "Re A Hlopheh". LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderfully hard-to-categorize album from the start of the 80s – a Mexican record that mixes folkloric roots with electronic instrumentation – but all in a way that sounds much more ancient than you'd expect for the time! The fusion of modes here is wonderful – almost at a level that reminds us of some of the Graeme Revell experiments of the mid 80s, or some of the more organic electronics from Japan – as the whole thing feels a lot more acoustic than electric, with a wonderful blend of woody sounds, percussion, and other great elements. Wicked jazzy bossa from 60s Brazil – a crackling early classic from pianist Dom Salvador! The group here is super-tight – a tremendous triangle of piano, bass, and drums – all grooving at equal pace, with a great deal of energy – and given a heck of a lot of soul from Dom's bold lines on the piano! There's a slight lyrical vibe at points, too – making for music that's mighty sweet, and very seductive – and the whole thing's right up there with some of the best bossa trio dates of the time. Trio features bass by Edson Lobo and drums by Victor Manga – and titles include "Arrastao", "Promessa", "Pro Batera", "Santarem", and "Tematrio". LP, Vinyl record album

CBS/Mr Bongo (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
A totally unique album from the Brazilian scene of the 60s – a set that was recorded right in the middle of the big Tropicalia years, but which has more of the earthier touches that would emerge in the Brazilian scene during the 70s! Yet there's also a sense of tight arrangement here too – a bit like the soulful crackle that came from some of the EMI/Odeon sessions, but served up with a more folklyric sense of instrumentation – lots of percussion, cuica, and other regional elements – sometimes topped with a single horn, or maybe just a string flourish – but never in a way that dampens the earthy energy at the core! The sound is fantastic – mostly instrumental, although with some spare vocals too – and titles include "Agua Viva", "Ritual Negro", "Desengano Da Vista", "Dual", "Arabindu", "Quem Sou Eu", "Advertencia", and "Sem Sombra". Gallo/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A fantastic set from 70s South Africa – and a record that maybe has a lot more of an American funk vibe than you'd expect! The style is nice and lean, and is often in a mode that echoes some of the cooler underground disco of the late 70s on the east coast – almost as if these cuts could have come from one of the P&P family of labels, instead of South Africa's big Gallo imprint – save for some especially nice moments that almost recall the early 70s electric funk of Hugh Masekela! All tunes are nice and long, all instrumentals – and the "disco specials" are original tunes that mix clubby rhythms with a variety of different sounds and styles – really cool, very fresh, and not even in the same territory as some of the West African/Paris hybrids of the time. Titles include the ten minute classic "Disco Stomp" – plus "We Did It", "Barney's Moaning", and "GG Is Talking". CD

A really amazing step forward for Matthew Tavares and Leland Whitty – two musicians best known as founders of BADBADNOTGOOD – but emerging here in an even more mature blend of jazz and larger instrumental ideas! The record mixes core solo voices with some larger touches here and there – shifting effortlessly between focus and scape, with the subtle majesty of similar Brazilian efforts from the 70s – lofty, but never too full of itself – sophisticated, but very down to earth! Tavares plays guitar and piano, Whitty handles saxes and flute – alongside bass, drums, and some nice larger strings, used very lightly, and in all the right ways. A vintage set from the great Ebo Talyor – an artist who's been recording new music in recent years, but who sounds even better here on one of his classics! Ebo's got a fair bit of jazz mixed in with his sound – a layering of flute, trombone, tenor, guitar, and keyboard parts with a strong sense of solo – a bit like South African jazz of the period, especially in the way the instruments really open up in the midtempo grooves! Rhythms are laidback, but still nicely present – not as speedy as Afro-Funk, but not much slower either – and there's also room for plenty of lyrics on the tracks, too – although it's the instrumental solos we think we like the best. Phonogram/Mr Bongo (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $7.99 11.98
The son of the legendary Ebo Taylor serves up a great record of his own – a sweet blend of funky highlife and other 70s-styled grooves – set to short cuts with a nicely compact vibe, and a cool style of production that almost owes a bit to the style of Jamaican music! There's lots of basslines that move carefully along the bottom – never too dubby, but definitely giving the work a nicely stepping style – while offbeat organ, riffing guitar, and other elements move nicely through the mix alongside the very raw vocals of the younger Ebo! At times, we'd almost call the set a Ghanian take on the harder sound of Kingston in the early 70s – and titles include "Mondo Soul Funky", "Swinging Soul For Love", "You've Got Yours Greedy Man", "Every Woman Needs A Helper", "Gotta Take It Cool", "Systems To Love", and "Begging On Knees". A set that's maybe one of the greatest bossa jazz albums of all time – and a fantastic homegrown Brazilian effort that's quite different from the more commercial American bossa albums of the 60s! Tenorio Jr isn't just a hell of a pianist, he's a great writer and arranger too – one who's got an amazing ear for color and tone, balanced out with some completely sublime grooves – not smooth coffee shop bossa nova, but instead the harder sort of rhythms that were cooked up by the best combos in Brazil! The tunes are as warm and soulful as they are tight and angular – a perfect summation of the bossa jazz idiom at its truest expression – and the writing is fantastic throughout, with original songs that really provide a fresh change from some of the too-played hits of the generation. Instrumentation includes trombone from Raul De Souza, drums from Milton Banana, tenor from Meirelles, and alto sax from Paulo Moura – on titles that include the classic groover "Nebulosa", plus the tracks "Clouds", "Nectar", "Embalo", and "Estou Nessa Agora". Trio Mocoto first rose to fame as the funky band behind Jorge Ben on his early 70s classics – the combo that gave him such a soulful sound – and here on their own, they sound pretty darn great – with a style that follows the same evolution as Jorge's own sound at the time! The core elements are still a mix of funk, samba, and soul – but there's also a slightly warmer sound to the production – one that really ties the whole thing together, and maybe gives the group even more force than before! Riffing guitars snap alongside the lively percussion – and the trio trade voices in a mighty nice way – sometimes with a bit of backup from other singers too. Brazilian funk, Brooklyn style – and one of the hippest collections of Brazilian grooves we've ever heard! The collection was put together by New York DJs Sean Marquand and Greg Caz – and it's got a wickedly funky vibe that comes from plenty of 70s samba soul! The style here is really different than other Brazilian Beats titles from Mr Bongo – as the work here is all classic, and chosen from a really fresh perspective – the new wave of interest in this music that's been bubbling up from the American underground, with a completely different perspective on the grooves from older scenes in Rio, Tokyo, or London! Most tracks here should be new to your ears – and although some of the tracks here have been reissued before, but they really come alive in different ways, thanks to the depth and careful pacing of the set. 22 tracks in all – with titles that include "Cafua" by Nonato, "Taieiras" by Ely Camargo, "Jeep" by Erasmo Carlos, "Cobra Criada" by Joao Bosco, "E Necessario" by Tim Maia, "Marcas" by Quarteto Uai, "Skim Dum Dum Dum" by Ana Rosely, "Black Soul Brothers" by Miguel De Deus, "Mais Kriola" by Helio Matheus, "A Festa" by Silvio Cesar, "Tava Mas Nao Tava" by Edson Frederico, "Uma Rosa Pra Dita" by Os Increveis, "Aleluia" by Robson Jorge & Licoln Olivetti, and "Beija-Flor Suite" by Chalo Eduardo. Kev doesn't do too much to the core tunes – but does have a way of stepping lively from one number to the next – and titles in the mix include "Eu Sou Mais Eu" by Anna Mazzotti, "O Journaleiro" by Toni Tornado, "La Lupita" by Nico Gomez, "A Festa" by Silvio Cesar, "Nao Aquento Voce" by Trio Esperanca, "Marcos" by Quarteto Uai, "Hot Pants Road" by Boogaloo Combo, "Carolina" by Seu Jorge, "Take Me Back To Piaui" by Juca Chaves, "Deus Me Faca Funky" by Skowa & Mafia, "Summertime" by Rosina De Valencia, "Carolina Carol Bela" by Jorge Ben & Toquinho, "Samblues" by Sambalanca Trio, and "Barumba" by Dom Salvador. It takes a special track list to seamlessly string elements of bossa and samba with such seemingly disparate contemporary club sounds – but that's why we keep following these compilations, isn't it? 18 tracks in all: Tejo, Black Alien & Speed "Follow Me Follow Me (Sao Benitez Radio Edit)", Stereo Maracana "Freestyle Love", Jorge Ben Jr. "Take It Easy My Brother Charles", Edson Frederico "Bobeira", Marku Ribas "Zamba Ben", Marcelo D2 "A Maldicao Do Samba", Jackson Do Pandeiro "Eu Balanco (Beatfanatic Rework)", Bossa Tres "Imprevisto", Mario Castro Neves & Samba S.A. This excellent set is a wonderful document of the link between music and football in Brazil – and features some classic songs that were either recorded by or for footballers, or which in time have come to be associated with the game. As you can imagine from the ferocity of the game, most of the tunes are lively, uptempo, and very groove oriented – which makes the set way more than just a package of sports songs, and an essential set of Brazilian grooves! Titles include"Mas Que Nada" by Tamba Trio, "Filo Maravilha" by Marijo, "Hino Da Bahia" by Caetano Veloso, "O Rei Pele" by Jackson Do Pandeiro, "Perdao Nao Tem" by Elis Regina & Pele, "Futebol Do Bar" by Caesar Camargo Mariano, "Take It Easy My Brother Charles" by Jorge Ben, "Ba Tu Ca Da" by Par Ney De Castro, "Rapido" by Portinho, "Pele" by Arakatuba & Ballistic Brothers, "Goleiro" by Batida Do Corpo, and even some great snippets of famous football goals from Brazil! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! The genius of Terry Callier – remixed! One of the greatest things to happen to Chicago soul legend Callier in recent years was his discovery by a host of cutting edge producers and DJs on the European scene – important talents who took his work to a whole new audience, by fusing Terry's original grooves with some more ambitious rhythmic progressions, keyboard lines, and other studio touches. And while you might fear that such knob-twiddling would muddy the waters and dampen Callier's spirit, such was not the case – as work in this vein only seemed to inspire Terry further, to stretch out his wings and reach new musical horizons. The tracks on this set offer a number of recent Callier recordings, remixed by the cream of the current UK and European scene – all as proof of how great this format is when applied to Callier's work. An amazing bit of soul – and one of the rarest funk records of the 70s! This masterpiece was recorded by The Jackson Sisters, a semi-gospelly soul group that has a sound that's a bit like The Voices of East Harlem, but that's a lot harder, and that has a deeper soul sound overall! At times, the group is funky – as on their incredible track "I Believe In Miracles", a rare groove classic if there ever was one, and one of the most in-demand tracks we've ever stocked. At other times, the girls have a mellower soul sound, with great raw harmonies that remind us of the Volt work by The Emotions, but with much rougher instrumental backing. This album's the only one they ever cut – and it's just about impossible to find in the original pressing (and in fact, we've never seen a copy!) A record with "samba" in the title, but a set that hardly sounds like samba at all – given that the record is one of the groundbreaking 70s albums from the legendary Tom Ze! Ze first rose to fame as an experimentalist in the Tropicalia scene – but here, he's years past that movement, yet still one of its most creative proponents – working in a mode that takes older Brazilian rhythms and infuses them with all the new sounds, styles, and sense of poetry that Tom was bringing to his music – often quite playful, but at a level that's quite moving as well. The whole thing's got the subtle "beyond language" power of some of the best by Caetano Veloso – even though Tom Ze is completely his own man throughout. An amazing set of grooves compiled by Russ Dewbury – best known as half of the Mitchell & Dewbury team, but also equally noted for his long-running Jazz Rooms DJ night in the UK! This set's a loving celebration of Russ' talents on the turntable – and his long tenure as a genre-shifting selector with roots that run back to the acid jazz years of the late 80s, and an influence that still helps shape the sounds of the dancefloor well into the 21st Century! As great testament to that fact, the tunes here are an assortment of older jazz and soul numbers, mixed with more recent tracks by artists who've really picked up a 70s vibe – the bits of Latin, Brazilian, modal, and fusion styles that have always made Dewbury's DJ work stand out so strongly. The vibe here is right up there with the best Gilles Peterson or Patrick Forge sets of this nature – and the 2CD version features 19 tracks that include "Knockout" by The Filthy 6, "Soulful Strut" by Peter Nero, "Mission Impossible" by Big Horns B, "Bougainvilea" by Karl Denson with Andy Bey, "I Like It" by Playa, "I Bet You Thought I'd Never Find You (Pacifica rmx)" by Palimpsest, "Batucada Por Favor" by Bob Azzam, "Frantic Activity" by Rhythm Funk Masters, "Sweet Power Your Embrace" by Recloose Live Band, "Bayesa" by Wganda Kenya, "Sweet Songs" by Sarah Webster Fabio, "Ain't Nobody" by Alex Wilson, "Gauche" by Sindbad, and "Don't Take It Too Hard" by Tuomo. 70s psychedelia from the northeastern state of Pernambuco, Brazil – incredible stuff that combines rawly percussive tropical sounds with a world of psychedelic creativity and possibilities – one of the best compilations ever put together by Mr Bongo! Lula Cortes was a pivotal figure in the scene and he's pretty well represented here, including his influential recordings with Ze Remalho. Even more exciting, though, is the stuff we've never been fortunate enough to hear before now – and there's a pretty good deal of it! The fusion of global psych and folk sounds into a distinctly Brazilian sound is nothing short of amazing – regional and traditional percussion underneath sitars, lutes, keyboards and more. It features songs by the great Lula Cortes & Ze Ramalho, Geraldo Azevedo & Alceu Valenca, Marconi Notaro, Flaviola E O Bando Do Sol and The Gentleman. 19 tracks in all: "Sorriso Delvagem" by The Gentlemen, "O Tempo" and "Desespero" by Flaviola E O Bando Do Sol, "Antropologica", "Maracatu" and "Fidelidade" by Marconi Notaro, "Mister Misterio", "Virgem Virginia" and more by Geraldo Azevedo & Alceu Valenca, "Bailado Das Muscarias" and "Maracas De Fogo" by Lula Cortes & Ze Ramalho, "Noite Preta" by Lula Cortes and more. A Mr Bongo collection of Brazilian grooves – put together in support of the Bottletop charity, and featuring a full bonus disc of remixes as well! Most of the tracks here are of relatively recent origin, but they've got a really classic feel overall – the warmer tones of 70s Brazilian jazz, the cooler rhythms of 60s bossa, and some of the freer dancefloor modes taken up worldwide in recent years! CD 1 features the cuts "Mar Afunda" by Os Novos Crioulos, "Amazonas" by Batida Do Corpo, "Toda Tercafeira" by Soul Quality Quartet, "E Isso Ai" by Paula Lima, "Urubu No Telhado" by Bazeado, "Cosinha II" by Dom Um Romao, "Injecao" by Deise Tigrona, "Nebulosa" by Tenorio Jr, "Goya" by Marcelo Salazar, and "Capoeira Love Affair" by Mr Hermano. The record includes the amazing heavy piano/percussion jammer "Hipnose", plus the great cuts "Voce Abusou", "Kabaluere", "Se Quiser Valer", "Deus O Salve", "Nord West", and "Dalena". Fierce funky grooves from the legendary Nico Gomez – a set cooked up in Europe, but heavy with influences from the other side of the Atlantic – from Havana all the way up to New York! There's definitely a Latin groove to the record – one that's similar to other Gomez productions – but there's also lots of heavy funk at the bottom – with basslines that drive most numbers along boldly, really raw percussion played with a nice sense of spontaneity, and these super-tight keyboards and guitars that you might find in American funk! The mix of modes is very much in the best spirit of contemporary groups like Chakachas or Lafayette Afro Rock Band – and titles include "Caballo Negro", "Lupita", "Baila Chibiquiban", "Pa! Pa! Pa! Heavy funk from a hip Japanese combo – one that features lots of drums and percussion from leader Akira Ishikawa, plus plenty of guitar, keyboards, and hard-riffing horns! Akira's taking most of his cues here from American funk of the early 70s – work by Incredible Bongo Band, BT Express, and others – but he often serves up the music with a fair bit of conga work at the front of the arrangements, in a way that takes familiar tunes and gives them a much rootsier, earthier kind of groove! The approach is unique, but totally great – and the album's a funk album unlike anything else we can think of – quite unusual even for the experimental Japanese scene of the time. Titles include "Bongo Rock", "Pick Up The Pieces", "Do It Til You're Satisfied", "I've Got To Use My Imagination", "Let's Start", "Love Is The Answer", and "Boogie On Reggae Woman". CD

60s jazz meets Japanese bamboo flute – all in a session with a great mix of groovy and exotic touches! The record's a unique meeting of jazz and folkloric elements – done in a style that's a bit like some of the late 60s sessions of this nature on MPS, but a fair bit groovier overall – as the tracks are shorter and more focused, and often have a nice sort of bounce at the bottom. Flute is by Minoru Muraoka, and arrangements are by Takashi Ikeda and Kozaburo Yamaki, conducting their New Dimension and New Emotion groups respectively. Bits of sitar bring in an even groovier sound to the record – and the flute itself has some oddly off-kilter notes that further trip out the tunes. A weird and wild little record from Os Canibais – at first glance, a familiar rockish set from late 60s Brazil – but upon deeper listening, a nicely tripped-out album in all the right places! Os Canibais have a touch of the Jovem Guarda groove – that Brazilian style of copping bits of Anglo rock from up north – but like some of the hippest South American acts at the time, they find ways of making the familiar sound very odd – weird little twists and turns on guitar, organ, and even production – already great on their covers of familiar tunes – but even wilder on their own numbers, which definitely have a psych quality right away – especially on the organ, which is really moody and dark! TThe first album by The Sylvers – a soulful band made up of youngsters from the Los Angeles scene, but who had a lot more going on than some of the other kiddie-soul bands of the early 70s! The group's a sextet at this point, with four male voices and two female ones – coming across as a sweet blend of tenor and soprano harmonies, in a similar mode to the Five Stairsteps – but maybe with a deeper, grittier vibe overall! The record has a solid sound and a funky groove that gives you a hint at what stars the kids would grow up to be – as not only The Sylvers would go on to crack the charts big, but members Leon and Foster would do some pretty great soul work on their own. Jerry Peters did arrangements on the best cuts – with that slightly messed-up groove that he brought to his best 70s work. The record includes the great funky sample cut "Fool's Paradise", which has a great intro that steps along with a fierce bongo sample! A record with "samba" in the title, but a set that hardly sounds like samba at all – given that the record is one of the groundbreaking 70s albums from the legendary Tom Ze! Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ SpacearkSpaceark Is ... CD
Color World/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great work from Spaceark – a funky soul combo who are much more firmly grounded on earth than their name or cover art might make you expect! The record's got this fantastic glow right from the start – really well-played instrumentation that has lots of jazzy currents – to support beautifully soulful vocals that make the whole thing wonderful from start to finish! There's harmonies on some tracks – almost giving the set the vibe of a great midtempo group soul record – but other moments push up the jazzier currents, with a warmth that's almost in Roy Ayers or James Mason territory. Wonderful all the way through – with titles that include "Sexy Lady", "Phantom Lover", "Each Song", "Sweet Hitch Hiker", "Take Her Out Dancing", and "Ja More Mon A More". CD

✨✧ Ebo Taylor, Pat Thomas, & Uhuru YenzuHitsville Re-Visited ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Not the Hitsville of Motown fame – but instead a fantastic album of upbeat, hard-grooving highlife – served up by the collaborative efforts of Ebo Taylor, Pat Thomas, and Uhuru Yenzu! Taylor is kind of the guiding force here – as he handles arrangements, and uses his guitar to really shape the groove – but Pat Thomas also gets in lots of great vocals too, usually joined by the other singers – in this mode that makes the whole thing maybe feel a bit more spontaneous and personal than other albums of this nature – especially from the time. The date is 1982, but the lean production style makes the whole thing feel like a set from a decade before – with a nicely crispy sound on the long titles "Gyae Su", "Go Slow", "Wiase Ahonya", and "Uhuru Special". Jack CostanzoLatin Fever ... LP
Liberty, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $69.99
One of the greatest albums of Latin Jazz ever recorded on the west coast during the 50s – and a landmark session from Jack "Mr Bongo" Costanzo! The album well earns its "fever" claim – as the set smokes from the very first note – Jack's bongos calling the pace, moving fast and furiously to pull in a jazzy mix of tenor, trumpet, flute, and piano – the latter of which is played by the great Eddie Cano! The whole thing's wonderful – as compelling musically as the great image on the front cover, and without any of the kitsch, tricks, or gimmicks that could sometimes hurt a session like this. No-nonsense Latin jazz all the way through – and filled with great tracks that include "Hornacopia", "Latin Fever", "Bajo Numero Uno", "Sax Con Ritmo", "Drum a Mania", and "Cumbanchero". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and a bit of aging.)

Liberty, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $29.99
A very groovy mix of Latin rhythms and late 50's "crime" themes – and a stunning example of the Liberty sound in action! Jack "Mr. Bongo" Costanzo plays hard conga and bongos with his orchestra, and the set includes killer themes like "Naked City", "Mr. Lucky", "African Waltz", "Peter Gunn", "Untouchables", "Theme From Route 66", and more! Not totally straight Latin, but with a great mix of styles that keeps things nice and lively! LP, Vinyl record album

Bukky LeoBukky Leo Presents Black Egypt ... CD
Can Can, 2000s. Used ... $9.99
A great album from saxophonist Bukky Leo – a player with roots in 70s Ethiopia, and a range of experiences that also includes key recordings in the early British acid jazz scene! Bukky's got a resume that includes work with Fela and Tony Allen – and he's working here in a mode that's very similar to recent work by the latter – an updated version of older Afro Funk styles, augmented slightly by additional keyboards and a warmer, more dancefloor-styled groove – but a core sound that's highly rhythmic, very acoustic, and filled with great work on guitar, sax, and flute! Bukky's also singing a fair bit on the record too – calling out the lyrics with a raspy warmth that's a lot more personal than some of Tony Allen's more abstract vocalizations on recent work – and the record's got a really focused feel that makes it one of the best takes on Afro Funk we've heard in a good number of years! Titles include "Ake Bo Je", "Times Like These", "Dreamer", "Dem Go Shout", "Secular Society", "His Majesty", "The Vision", and "Why Can't We Live Together". CD
(CDr release, subsequently reissued by Mr. Bongo as Afrobeat Visions.)

VariousSangue Latino – Classic Brazilian Jazz Funk Grooves ... CD
Club Brasil (UK), 2002. Used ... $16.99
Classic Brazilian grooves – redone in sweet new versions! The set's a collection of classic 70s tracks – by Milton Nascimento, Azymuth, Roy Ayers, and others – all recast with a sweet and sparkling modern groove, sounding a lot like the best work we've heard from labels like Far Out and Mr Bongo in recent years! Nearly all the singers on the set are female, and the collection features tracks that include "Sina", "Para Lennon E McCartney", "Maracatu Atomico", and Aldeia De Ogum" by Guida De Palma; "Sangue Latino" and "Mania De Voce" by Ivi Mendes; "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" by Heidi Leonore; and "Voo Sobre O Horizonte" and "For What It's Worth" by Lisa Brown. VariousSangue Latino 2 – Classic Brazilian Jazz Funk Grooves ... CD
Club Brasil (UK), 2003. Used ... $12.99
A great idea for a compilation – older Brazilian grooves re-done by a collective of younger artists! The choice of tunes is impeccable – and tracks include tunes first made famous by the likes of Marcos Valle, Lo Borges, Joyce, Kitty Winter, Sergio Mendes, and others – all performed by a core group of musicians who work the grooves with loads of jazzy touches! Instrumentation includes keyboards, flute, and guitar – and all tracks have vocals from a rotating array of singers that include Ive Mendes, Lisa Brown, and Victoria Newton. The whole thing's great – as wonderful (perhaps more so) as any recent projects of this nature from Far Out or Mr Bongo – with titles that include "Mentira", "O Trem Azul", "Tarde Em Itapoan", "The Real Thing", "Brazil Night", "Feminina", and "Three Angels". ✨✧ Mental AbstratoUzoma ... LP
SDB Discos, 2019. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Really great work from a Brazilian combo that somehow manages to work in a mode that's completely rootsy, but also completely contemporary too! The music here mixes together heavy percussion, bits of jazz, and just the right touches on keyboards, beats, and samples – so that the organic and electric elements are perfectly balanced – at a level that's wonderfully illuminating, and which shifts nicely from track to track on the album – partly because of some of the guests who appear throughout. Titles include "Khamisi", "O Mar", "Mr Cal", "For You", "James Bongo", "Blue Skies", "Afroonirico", "Suco De Acerola", "Samambaia Rainha", and "Down". LP, Vinyl record album

Francy BolandOut Of The Background ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1967. Very Good+ ... $59.99
Wow! We've always gone on record as liking Mr. Boland as part of his big band with Kenny Clarke, but here on this Saba original, they wail together in a tight trio, with Jimmy Woode on bass, and Fats Sadi on bongos. Lots of quick little groovers, with a tight modal jazzy sound – as you'd expect from MPS in the classic years. Great cuts include "Dark Eyes", "Dia-Bleu", "Wolf-Gang", and "Father Klook", but the whole album's great. LP, Vinyl record album
(French MPS pressing.)
