VariousMr Bongo Record Club – Vol 2 ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $23.99 24.98
A record club that's way way cooler than the Columbia House version of the 70s – as the Mr Bongo take on the format features only rare funk tracks from around the world! Most of these tunes here are from vintage Brazilian and African sources – but the tunes still have plenty of elements that you'd know from American soul of the 70s – funky drums, basslines, sweet keyboards, and soulful vocals – served up alongside less familiar elements that really keep things interesting, and which makes for a hell of a compilation overall! Most of these tracks were previously issued on very limited Mr Bongo 45s – brought together here with a set list that includes "Ebony Game" by Guy Chevas, "Awake O Zion" by Elbertina Twinkie Clark, "Family Planning" by Kiru Stars, "Nao Adianta" by Leny Andrade, "Samba Maneiro" by Rosa Maria, "Obrigado Corcovado" by Tom & Dito, "Capoeira" by Joao Diaz, "Harari" by The Beaters, "Merry Go Round" by The Equatics, and "Ecology" by Anubis. Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mr Bongo really goes back to its roots here – and returns to the kind of rare global gems that first made us fall in love with the label in the first place! Over 20 years ago, Mr Bongo were one of the key global forces in opening up people's ears to the sounds of funk and soul from around the globe – digging up rare nuggets from out of the way places that might have echoed American styles, but turned them on their ear – or the kinds of cuts that were completely unique, but which could stand next to the kind of funky 45s that were being sampled for hip hop! This collection brings together some of the best cuts that continue that legacy – some rare singles, some obscure European tracks, and lots of others you never would have discovered otherwise – with titles that include "Deixa A Tristeza", "Piranha" by Alipio Martins, "Seara De Oxala" by Barbosa, "Mathar" by Dave Pike Set, "Freak" by Tappa Zukie, "Mama Hot Daddy Cool" by Big Youth, "Fish & Funjee" by Lantei Lamptey, "Karam Bani" by Buari, "Handsome Boy (parts 1 & 2)" by The Rwenzoris, "He's Forever" by King James Version, "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver" by Cortez, and "Can't Live Without You" by Connie Laverne. Incredible Bongo BandBongo Rock (180 gram deluxe 40th anniversary edition) ... LP
Pride/Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
A landmark album that is perhaps the single most influential beat source in hip hop! The record was the brainchild of bongo player Michael Viner – who also happened to be running the Pride subsidiary of MGM at the time. Viner's got a meeeeeean touch on the bongo, hitting it hard and funky like the best 70s conga players – and his approach to the instrument is kind of like a funky update of popular instrumental styles laid down on guitar by The Ventures or on moog by Hot Butter. This album features the classics "Apache" and "Bongo Rock" – both with monster funky breakdowns that showed up on a heck of a lot of hip hop records over the years – plus loads of other goodies like "Last Bongo In Belgium" and "Bongolia". Excellent stuff – and darn hard to find! (We can still remember how stunned we were when we found our first copy in a Canadian record store back in 1987 – and even then we had to pay plenty!) LP, Vinyl record album
(Super-heavy 40th anniversary reissue – on the same mirror-style cover as the original, with heavy tip-on cover!)

Akofa AkoussahAkofa Akoussah ... CD
Sonafric/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. Used ... $8.99
A beautiful record from Akofa Akoussah – a singer from Togo who's equally gifted in funky and sweeter soul styles! Half the record is full-on funk, and we'd swear that Lafayette Afro Rock Band must have had a hand in some of the instrumentation (possible, as it was recorded in Paris) – as there's reed lines and trippy electric elements that feel like they're very much their work – especially the way they could make things wig out around the edges of the mix! And if they're not on the record, the sound is very similar on the funky numbers – which then leaves the sweeter tracks to bring in a bit more of an acoustic balance, and really foreground Akofa's amazing voice. Titles include "Tango", "La Lem", "Mitso Aseye", "Dandou Kodjo", "G Blem Di", and "Kimumbu". CD

Gyedu-Blay AmbolleyAmbolley ... CD
Cougar/Mr Bongo (UK), 1982. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A really well-crafted set of funk from the legendary Gyedu-Blay Ambolley – maybe best known for his material in the mid 70s, but sounding equally wonderful here on an album from the start of the 80s! The sound is sharper and more sophisticated than before – recorded in London, with a great ear for the many possibilities of basslines, keyboard parts, and rhythms – used in modes that embrace a wider range of soul styles, but which also don't sound anything at all like mainstream R&B! A few tracks feature more familiar highlife rhythms, but most are in this new breed laid down by Ambolley – on titles that include "Walking Down The Street", "Frafranta", "Adwoa", "Cut Your Coat", "Cause I Love You", and a great funky remake of "Simigwa" – maybe worth the price of the album alone, thanks to percussion that almost rivals the Incredible Bongo Band. AtmosfearEn Trance ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $23.99 24.98
Some of the greatest club tunes ever cut for the UK scene – a sublime album of jazzy spacey instrumentals by the legendary Atmosfear! The group were almost a UK equivalent of the sounds coming out of New York from the P&P camp at the end of the 70s – as they worked in the shadows of mainstream disco, but with a sound that was leaner, more stripped-down, and often touched with keyboard styles borrowed heavily from jazz funk and fusion. There's a simplicity to the Atmosfear groove that's totally great – a real focus on snapping drums, spacey keyboards, and trippy basslines – never too complicated, but always a cut above the more familiar grooves of the time. Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $10.99 11.98
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". Two killer slices of Brazilian funk! The instrumental "Miss Cheryl" is one of the trademark tunes of Banda Black Rio – a cut with these sharp, jazzy changes that are completely amazing – and which easily have BBR rivaling the sound of Earth Wind & Fire at their best! The flipside is a very cool remake of "Rapper's Delight" – one that starts out in familiar territory on the start, but then has a jazzier piano line instead of the vocal, and a wicked guitar solo in the middle! 7-inch, Vinyl record

"Whatever's Fair" is one of the best-remembered numbers from the Infinity recordings with Billy Butler – work that's got all the soaring soul of his 60s Chicago work, but a more righteous vibe too! "Simple Things" is by Lady Lee – and has this really cool intro that's almost watery – shimmering keyboard, guitar, and bass parts tied up together – to set this hip, jazzy current for her beautiful midtempo vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record

One of the richest, most expressive albums ever from the great Gal Costa – a set from her immediate post-Tropicalia years, and one that shows that she's got a lot more to offer than just a wild sense of experimentation! Gilberto Gil is the musical director here – with help from Rogerio Duprat and Arthur Verocai – and the album's got the lofty feel you'd expect from all three talents – a rich blend of all the modern developments in Brazilian music that had taken place in the 60s, but infused with a newly rootsy sense as well – one that takes the whole thing back to a personal, expressive territory that's really wonderful. Instrumentationincludes work on keyboards by Wagner Tiso and Tenorio Jr, plus a bit of guitar from Roberto Menescal – and Gal does a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Relance" – alongside other tracks that include "Passarinho", "Da Maior Imortancia", "India", "Volta", and the funky "Pontos De Luz". The whole thing's incredibly beautiful – and it's got Gal in a wild bikini cover, too! CD

Cymande's "Bra" is a dub-heavy classic – rolling along at a compelling midtempo groove, with scattershot bass and drums, and these cool flanged out rasta vocals that make the cut super-righteous! Speaking of righteous, "Brothers On The Slide" is one of the group's best known, most-used cuts – one that you'll go "oh, I know that one" upon hearing – as it's got this badass vibe that's almost like Curtis Mayfield on Curtom! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Sony/Mr Bongo (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Heavy funk from a hip Japanese combo – one that features lots of drums and percussion from leader Akira Ishikawa, plus plenty of guitar, keyboards, and hard-riffing horns! Akira's taking most of his cues here from American funk of the early 70s – work by Incredible Bongo Band, BT Express, and others – but he often serves up the music with a fair bit of conga work at the front of the arrangements, in a way that takes familiar tunes and gives them a much rootsier, earthier kind of groove! The approach is unique, but totally great – and the album's a funk album unlike anything else we can think of – quite unusual even for the experimental Japanese scene of the time. Long live disco, but not the sort that was big on the American scene of the 70s – as Tunde Mabadu serves up a nicely lean version of the music here – filled with Nigerian funk elements, and plenty of his own great work on tenor and alto sax! Not the throwaway disco you might expect – and instead, an excellent album in the 70s run of Brazilian soul giant Tim Maia – and one that provides a bit of a link to the legacy of his nephew Ed Motta in later years! The album's filled with uptempo tunes – as you'd expect from the title – Tim dropping his heavier funk style of his earliest records, to go for a spirited clubby groove – but one that really brings out some great moments in his vocals – really soaring with notes he never would have hit before! The feel of the record is really pretty darn great – as great as the best American club and disco work of the time – with the added bonus of Tim's great singing, and a few electric funky touches on the best numbers. 70s soul from Brazil – and a tremendously strong effort from the legendary Tim Maia! This record was Tim's first after an initial run on Polydor – and it shows Maia tightening up his groove even more, but still avoiding the slicker sounds of later years. There's a really focused sound here that's totally great – one that shows that Maia's work was hardly just some happy cross-cultural accident, and instead the careful work of an artist who was out to challenge the best American soul acts of the time! There's a warm little groove to most of the tracks – tripping along lightly in the vein of some of our favorite US mellow soul from the mid 70s – an approach that's mostly soul, but with some funky undercurrents – and often smooth, but never cloying or overly commercial. Titles include "Ride Twist & Roll", "Flores Belas", "Let It All Hang Out", "Sem Voce", "E Necessario", "Leva O Meu Blue", "Pense Menos", and "Musica Para Betinha". LP, Vinyl record album

RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A fantastic bit of funky fusion from Brazil – one of the most hard-hitting albums we've ever heard from keyboardist Cesar Mariano! Mariano had a long legacy in music that included great arrangements for Elis Regina – but this set is completely different than most of his other work – almost in a CTI Records sort of vein, as if Mariano were trying to follow the mode of his contemporary Deodato – but with a stronger current of Brazilian jazz, especially all of the complexity that was coming into that music at the time. Most of the instrumentation is electric – with a great mix of guitars, bass, and keyboards – but there's also nice use of acoustic bass and piano – for a groove that's both funky, but also touched with strong elements of Brazilian jazz. Titles include the cool funky track "Metropole", the break cut "Fabrica", and the mellow groover "Imigrantes" – as well as the tunes "Metro", "Litoral", and "Futebol De Bar". CD

There's lots of cool keyboards on "Mais Kriola" – moogy bits, clavinet, and maybe more too – all wrapped together in this mix of funk and Brazilian fusion, in a way that reminds us a bit of early Azymuth – but with more soulful vocals! "Maita" is one of the funkiest cuts ever from Doris Monteiro – groovier even than her 60s work, with a samba soul rhythm that's topped by her own sweet vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record

One of the grooviest Brazilian albums you could ever hope to buy – and one that's not even from Brazil, either! This little gem was recorded in France in the early 70s – but it's got a swinging groove that's very similar to the work of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 during the 60s – upbeat, bossa-inflected, and with a strong undercurrent of jazz! Mesquita's group is a lot like Sergio's – right down to its mix of two vocalists on the lyrics – but there's a few important differences: this group's got one male and one female singer, a lot more percussion than Sergio ever used, and an overall sound that's less pop-oriented, and much harder overall! The whole album's great – tight, driving, and lively, with some incredible production – and titles include "Balanca Pema", "Dabadeia", "Aguas De Marco", "Fechado Pra Balanco", "Zanzibar", and "O Gato". King/Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
60s jazz meets Japanese bamboo flute – all in a session with a great mix of groovy and exotic touches! The record's a unique meeting of jazz and folkloric elements – done in a style that's a bit like some of the late 60s sessions of this nature on MPS, but a fair bit groovier overall – as the tracks are shorter and more focused, and often have a nice sort of bounce at the bottom. Flute is by Minoru Muraoka, and arrangements are by Takashi Ikeda and Kozaburo Yamaki, conducting their New Dimension and New Emotion groups respectively. Bits of sitar bring in an even groovier sound to the record – and the flute itself has some oddly off-kilter notes that further trip out the tunes. Titles include "Soul Bamboo", "Take Five", "The Positive & The Negative", "Call Me", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Scarborough Fair". CD

Certainly one of the greatest albums by this excellent (and oft-overlooked!) group from the 70s! The band of young Bahians deliver a great mix of tracks tinged with bits of rock, funky samba, and even a few psychedelic influences – with alternating male and female vocals, and some excellent songwriting that places the record right up there with some of the best work by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil from the same time! We love this one to death, and find it to be one of the few records by the group that we return to again and again – a real post-Tropicalia classic that's filled with great songs. Tracks include "Preta Pretinha", "Besta E Tu", "A Menina Danca", "Swing De Campo Grande", and "Tinindo Trincando". LP, Vinyl record album

A totally great album from Novos Baianos – the earliest one we've ever seen by the group, and a session that has them sounding a fair bit like Os Mutantes! There's a wild range of influences running through the set – some psychedelic, some baroque pop, and some a bit more rootsy – as the group would explore more deeply in the mid 70s – and throughout the set there's a great sense of play in the music, the kind of tongue in cheek quality that we love in Os Mutantes, and which we never expected so strongly from these guys! Titles include "O Samba Me Traiu", "Ferro Na Boneca", "Eu De Adjetivos", "Outro Mambo Outro Mundo", "Colegio De Aplicao", "A Casca De Banana Que Eu Pisei", "Juventude Sexta E Sabado", and "De Vera". The funky Rob way is a massive one at that – a new path into Afro Funk modes for the 70s, with a groove that's made this set a collectors classic for decades! The group is tighter than most, yet more skittish too – percussion rattling alongside basslines that have these echoey qualities that go deep and dark, but with more of a soul-based style than some of the psych-influence work from Zimbabwe and other scenes of the time! Spare electronic bits come into play with the keyboards, guitar, drums, and bass – but at a level that's never overdone – just enough to keep things slightly offbeat and unsettling, while Rob himself grooves away in the lead! It's almost impossible to describe in words what makes this set so unique – but one drop of the needle will have you hooked for life – thanks to cuts that include "Funky Rob Way", "Forgive Us All", "Boogie On", "Just One More Time", "More", and "Your Kiss Stole Me Away". A totally unique album from the Brazilian scene of the 60s – a set that was recorded right in the middle of the big Tropicalia years, but which has more of the earthier touches that would emerge in the Brazilian scene during the 70s! Yet there's also a sense of tight arrangement here too – a bit like the soulful crackle that came from some of the EMI/Odeon sessions, but served up with a more folklyric sense of instrumentation – lots of percussion, cuica, and other regional elements – sometimes topped with a single horn, or maybe just a string flourish – but never in a way that dampens the earthy energy at the core! The sound is fantastic – mostly instrumental, although with some spare vocals too – and titles include "Agua Viva", "Ritual Negro", "Desengano Da Vista", "Dual", "Arabindu", "Quem Sou Eu", "Advertencia", and "Sem Sombra". One of the most legendary funk albums of the 70s – a real gem through and through, and filled with the best range of sounds the east coast scene had to offer at the time! The Skull Snaps only ever cut this one album during the early 70s – and it's a masterful blend of hard funk, sweet soul, and soaring group grooving – a mix that hangs together perfectly over the years, and which has the group sounding equally great on heavy funk and more club-oriented tunes! The group grew out of the earlier Diplomats group – and are working here with great production from George Kerr and arrangements from Bert Keyes – both talents who help keep the sound top-shelf throughout. Titles include the monster break track "It's A New Day" (which virtually became the blueprint for hip hop at the end of the 90s!), the uptempo groover "Trespassing", and the righteous funky soul cut "I'm Your Pimp"! How old was Foster Sylvers when he cut this record? Seven? Eight? Whatever the case, the little tyke forever changed the face of funky music with the incredible cut "Misdemeanor" – one of those chunky funky numbers that sounds like nothing else we've ever heard, and which has been in demand on the groove scene for years and years. The cut's simply amazing, and it kicks off a record that's pretty darn tasty all-around. Young Foster's singing in kind of a Jackson Five mode – but he's got some great arrangements by Jerry Peters, David Crawford, and King Errison that keep things pretty funky on many tracks, and nice and soulful on the rest. A good portion of the numbers are covers, but even those are done nicely. Foster Sylvers' "Misdemeanor" is one of the greatest-ever funky tunes from the 70s – made famous years back by a DOC sample, but loved way before that by anyone with a funky set of ears! The cut's got this incredibly strange groove – bass sneaking out a rhythm before the drums, both of them still close enough to make things very very funky – and Foster singing over the top in sweet falsetto soul! TThe first album by The Sylvers – a soulful band made up of youngsters from the Los Angeles scene, but who had a lot more going on than some of the other kiddie-soul bands of the early 70s! The group's a sextet at this point, with four male voices and two female ones – coming across as a sweet blend of tenor and soprano harmonies, in a similar mode to the Five Stairsteps – but maybe with a deeper, grittier vibe overall! The record has a solid sound and a funky groove that gives you a hint at what stars the kids would grow up to be – as not only The Sylvers would go on to crack the charts big, but members Leon and Foster would do some pretty great soul work on their own. Jerry Peters did arrangements on the best cuts – with that slightly messed-up groove that he brought to his best 70s work. The record includes the great funky sample cut "Fool's Paradise", which has a great intro that steps along with a fierce bongo sample! Also includes some nice mellower soul material – like "Wish That I Could Talk to You", "I Know Myself", and "Chaos". All that, and Jerry Butler production too! LP, Vinyl record album

The second album by The Sylvers – and like the first, a record that really has the group going way past any expectations you might have of them as a kid soul group! The Sylvers started out in the same era as the Jackson 5 and Five Stairsteps – but right from the start, they already sounded a lot more adult – and also had a way of setting up a tune that was uniquely sophisticated, and maybe which took years to appreciate! Part of this strength has to do with the excellent studio help used for the album – as the set was put together by Jerry Peters, with additional rhythm arrangements by Harvey Mason – and the pair of them give the set a very groovy feel, taking full advantage of the group's strong ability to turn a catchy lyric, but also adding some razor sharpness to the grooves. The date is 1982, but the lean production style makes the whole thing feel like a set from a decade before – with a nicely crispy sound on the long titles "Gyae Su", "Go Slow", "Wiase Ahonya", and "Uhuru Special". ToquinhoToquinho ... CD
RGE/Mr Bongo (UK), 1970. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A wonderful early album from Brazilian guitarist/singer Toquinho – done before his famous collaborations with Vincius De Moraes, and with a very different groove! The record features guest appearances by Jorge Ben on two tracks – and much of the record seems to have Toquinho absorbing a bit of Ben's spirit – using lively samba rhythms on some of the best tracks, which creates a groove that's really unexpected – and which makes the album a real standout in his catalog! Toquinho's guitar work is wonderful in the setting – maybe even more compelling in its deftness, and no less full of feeling – and titles include a killer reading of "Que Maravilha", done with Jorge Ben, who also guests on "Carolina Carol Bela" – and other titles include a version of "Bachianinha No 1" with Paulinho Nogueira; a great cover of Ben's "Zana"; and the tracks "Evocacao A Jacob", "Chuva Na Praia De Juqui", "Evocacao De Jacob", "De Ontem Pra Hoje", and "Na Agua Negra Da Lagoa". Trio Mocoto first rose to fame as the funky band behind Jorge Ben on his early 70s classics – the combo that gave him such a soulful sound – and here on their own, they sound pretty darn great – with a style that follows the same evolution as Jorge's own sound at the time! The core elements are still a mix of funk, samba, and soul – but there's also a slightly warmer sound to the production – one that really ties the whole thing together, and maybe gives the group even more force than before! Riffing guitars snap alongside the lively percussion – and the trio trade voices in a mighty nice way – sometimes with a bit of backup from other singers too. Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Amazing! One of our favorite records of all time! We totally love the work of Marcos Valle – and we can honestly say that he's probably our favorite Brazilian artist ever. Valle had an incredible musical vision, and he was one of those rare Brazilian talents – like Edu Lobo or Egberto Gismonti – who would forever change the face of music with his unique concepts. This set includes some of Valle's best-ever work – much of it long out of print and never properly reissued before. The groove begins with bossa nova, moves into baroque pop, jazzy funk, and incredibly complex MPB. Titles include "Tanto Andei", "Wanda Vidal", "Batucada Sergiu", "Azimuth", "Deus Brasileiro", "A Morte De Um Deus De Sal", "Garra", "Previsao Do Tempo", and "Taio Branco Forte". Sweet and jazzy pop from early 70s Brazil – a great little album that we'd rank with our favorites by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo! Arthur Verocai isn't nearly as well-known as those two, but he works in a similar territory – taking jazz, large arrangements, and nice touches of electric funk – and working them into a groove that has the soaring and ambitious feel of the best post-Tropicalia work of 70s Brazil! This rare gem was self-produced, and fell of the map almost as soon as it was released – but it really deserves wider recognition, and shines with a depth that makes it an instant classic to our ears! A monster of an Afro Funk album – one with a hard-jamming quality that reminds us of some of the best Fela classics of the 70s! All of side one features the massive "Cunny Jam Wayo" – a cut that has layers of percussion that build up beautifully, with lots of space for strong, long solos on trumpet, tenor, alto sax, guitar, and clavinet – all instruments that get plenty of space on the cut while Shina Williams is driving the band along with his relentless energy! Side two features to slightly shorter tracks, both of them wonderful – "Agboju Logun", which has riffing guitar and almost an American funk undercurrent – and the bubbling "Gboro Mi Ro", which complicates the rhythms in a nice way, then brings it back by strong call/response vocals! A record with "samba" in the title, but a set that hardly sounds like samba at all – given that the record is one of the groundbreaking 70s albums from the legendary Tom Ze! Ze first rose to fame as an experimentalist in the Tropicalia scene – but here, he's years past that movement, yet still one of its most creative proponents – working in a mode that takes older Brazilian rhythms and infuses them with all the new sounds, styles, and sense of poetry that Tom was bringing to his music – often quite playful, but at a level that's quite moving as well. The whole thing's got the subtle "beyond language" power of some of the best by Caetano Veloso – even though Tom Ze is completely his own man throughout. The set features arrangements from Jose Briamonte, production from Heraldo Do Monte, and titles that include a rootsy take on "A Felicidade", plus the nutty instrumental "Toc", and the original tracks "So", "Ma", "Vai", "Ui", "Indice", "Hein", and "Mae". Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $15.99 24.98
Fantastic sounds from the glory days of the Burkina Faso scene – a time when the country's place at the crossroads of West Africa was helping to create some really amazing music! There's no set style here that defines the groove – as some tracks seem to flow from Nigerian funk, while others have echoes of Mali, and still others might show an influence from the North African changes of the period – but all with an ear towards the kinds of sounds that might burst out from the landlocked nation, and try to catch fire on the wider global market of the time. As you might guess from the Mr Bongo presentation of the music, there's a fair bit of funk in the mix – some heavy basslines or drums on about half of the tunes, mixed with lighter local instrumentation on some of the others – criss-crossing throughout in a really great way! Titles include "Boy Cuinsinier" by Pierre Sandouidi, "Jeunesse Willia" by Cisse Abdoulaye, "Kombisse" by Bozambo, "A Son Magni" by Cisse Abdoulaye and Super Volta, "M'Ba Lale" by Nabolle John Oumar, "Whisky Et Coca Cola" by Amadou Balake, "De Nwolo" by Coulibaly Tidiane and Dafra Star, "Djanfa Magni" by Youssouf Diarra Dit El Grand Ballake, and "Pop Konde" by Mangue Konde Et L'Orchestre Les 5 Consuls. An amazing bit of soul – and one of the rarest funk records of the 70s! This masterpiece was recorded by The Jackson Sisters, a semi-gospelly soul group that has a sound that's a bit like The Voices of East Harlem, but that's a lot harder, and that has a deeper soul sound overall! At times, the group is funky – as on their incredible track "I Believe In Miracles", a rare groove classic if there ever was one, and one of the most in-demand tracks we've ever stocked. At other times, the girls have a mellower soul sound, with great raw harmonies that remind us of the Volt work by The Emotions, but with much rougher instrumental backing. This album's the only one they ever cut – and it's just about impossible to find in the original pressing (and in fact, we've never seen a copy!) Apart from the amazing cut "Miracles", this one includes loads of gems like "Rockin' On My Porch", "Shake Her Loose", "(Why Can't We Be) More Than Just Friends", and "Boy, You're Dynamite"! CD

CD

A sweet set from that great record moment when Latin styles were coming into play with the hipper sounds of the bachelor pad world! Jack "Bongo" Burger was a west coast percussionist with a very similar style to Jack "Mr Bongo" Costanzo – and in fact, since they're both named Jack, and have a bongo middle name, we always wonder whether or not they're the same person! Whatever the case, this album's a tasty batch of bongo-heavy tracks – with a style that's similar to some of Costanzo's work on Liberty, although perhaps with slightly less of a Latin bent. The group includes Buddy Collette on flute and sax, plus piano, trumpet, electric bass, and some nice odd percussion. Kind of like a combo of some of Collette's jazz work, and the exotic stuff that was also appearing on the Hi Fi label.
