Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Mr Bongo really goes back to its roots here – and returns to the kind of rare global gems that first made us fall in love with the label in the first place! Over 20 years ago, Mr Bongo were one of the key global forces in opening up people's ears to the sounds of funk and soul from around the globe – digging up rare nuggets from out of the way places that might have echoed American styles, but turned them on their ear – or the kinds of cuts that were completely unique, but which could stand next to the kind of funky 45s that were being sampled for hip hop! This collection brings together some of the best cuts that continue that legacy – some rare singles, some obscure European tracks, and lots of others you never would have discovered otherwise – with titles that include "Deixa A Tristeza", "Piranha" by Alipio Martins, "Seara De Oxala" by Barbosa, "Mathar" by Dave Pike Set, "Freak" by Tappa Zukie, "Mama Hot Daddy Cool" by Big Youth, "Fish & Funjee" by Lantei Lamptey, "Karam Bani" by Buari, "Handsome Boy (parts 1 & 2)" by The Rwenzoris, "He's Forever" by King James Version, "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver" by Cortez, and "Can't Live Without You" by Connie Laverne. Maybe the coolest entry so far in this excellent series – and proof that the Mr Bongo label has gone much farther in recent years than it ever did in the past! Years back, Bongo was known as a hotbed of Latin and Brazilian music – but the sounds here are also rare funk and soul, other global modes, and even a few contemporary touches too – all served up with the care and class that we used to love from a Mr Bongo DJ night in London – way back when we used to make it to events like that! There's no need to know anything about the music in advance – just let the record work its magic, as it takes you through cuts that include "Paradise Island" by Azwon, "Eyes Growing Wider" by Carnival, "Throwing Stones (Kenny Dope mix)" by James Reese & The Progressions, "Amanha O Tempo Muda" by Lincoln, "Mama Matotoya" by Vikings, "Sputla" by Teaspoon Ndelu, "Al Elnim" by Hamlet Minassian, "Selfportait" by Matty, "Extralude (Wyndham Earl's more than an interlude rmx)" by Wax Machine, "Lotus 72 D" by Ze Roberto, "Sonho Lindo" by Don Ricardo, "The Peruvian" by DJ Format & The Simonsound, and "Don't Stop This Train" by Cindy & The Playmates. Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A record club that's way way cooler than the Columbia House version of the 70s – as the Mr Bongo take on the format features only rare funk tracks from around the world! Most of these tunes here are from vintage Brazilian and African sources – but the tunes still have plenty of elements that you'd know from American soul of the 70s – funky drums, basslines, sweet keyboards, and soulful vocals – served up alongside less familiar elements that really keep things interesting, and which makes for a hell of a compilation overall! Most of these tracks were previously issued on very limited Mr Bongo 45s – brought together here with a set list that includes "Jungle Music" by Kelenkye Band, "Mas Que Nada" by Luiz Henrique, "Ebony Game" by Guy Chevas, "Awake O Zion" by Elbertina Twinkie Clark, "Family Planning" by Kiru Stars, "Nao Adianta" by Leny Andrade, "Samba Maneiro" by Rosa Maria, "Obrigado Corcovado" by Tom & Dito, "Capoeira" by Joao Diaz, "Harari" by The Beaters, "Merry Go Round" by The Equatics, and "Ecology" by Anubis. ✨✧ Incredible Bongo BandBongo Rock (silver vinyl pressing) (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Pride/Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A landmark album that is perhaps the single most influential beat source in hip hop! The record was the brainchild of bongo player Michael Viner – who also happened to be running the Pride subsidiary of MGM at the time. Viner's got a meeeeeean touch on the bongo, hitting it hard and funky like the best 70s conga players – and his approach to the instrument is kind of like a funky update of popular instrumental styles laid down on guitar by The Ventures or on moog by Hot Butter. This album features the classics "Apache" and "Bongo Rock" – both with monster funky breakdowns that showed up on a heck of a lot of hip hop records over the years – plus loads of other goodies like "Last Bongo In Belgium" and "Bongolia". Excellent stuff – and darn hard to find! (We can still remember how stunned we were when we found our first copy in a Canadian record store back in 1987 – and even then we had to pay plenty!) Sonafric/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
A beautiful record from Akofa Akoussah – a singer from Togo who's equally gifted in funky and sweeter soul styles! Half the record is full-on funk, and we'd swear that Lafayette Afro Rock Band must have had a hand in some of the instrumentation (possible, as it was recorded in Paris) – as there's reed lines and trippy electric elements that feel like they're very much their work – especially the way they could make things wig out around the edges of the mix! And if they're not on the record, the sound is very similar on the funky numbers – which then leaves the sweeter tracks to bring in a bit more of an acoustic balance, and really foreground Akofa's amazing voice. Titles include "Tango", "La Lem", "Mitso Aseye", "Dandou Kodjo", "G Blem Di", and "Kimumbu". CD

RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
An amazing bit of Brazilian funk – and the best album ever by this exciting soulful duo! The record's their first, and it's got a crackling intensity that you don't always find on their other albums – a groove that mixes hard samba with bass-heavy funk, with a sound that makes them one of the most important forces of the Samba Soul generation! There's lots here to love if you like the heavy grooves of Jorge Ben or Tim Maia – but the duo also have a really great approach of their own – especially in the way they'll trade voices back and forth, over grooves that also have plenty of back/forth action too! The record includes the amazing heavy piano/percussion jammer "Hipnose", plus the great cuts "Voce Abusou", "Kabaluere", "Se Quiser Valer", "Deus O Salve", "Nord West", and "Dalena". CD

Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". Mr Bongo (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
A rare one from Ghanaian legend Gyedu Blay Ambolley – fully in control of a far-reaching funky trip with his Zantoda Mark III group! Control carries on with the most treasured aspects of Ambolley's mid 70s work – the raw percussion, punchy horns and charismatic vocals – but it's tripped out in really cool ways with the addition of some spacey keys and synth. There's a lot to be said for how elegantly the funky Ghana soul instrumentation and spiritual lyricism blend with bubbling spacey touches, making this his most unique effort in that respect, but it's still funk and soul to the core. Includes "Control", "Woye De Adofo", "Don't Go" and "Mercy Kae Dabi" (both with Eddie Jackson singing), "Take Am Soul" and "The Message (God Is Love)". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the greatest jazz vocal albums of all time – and one of the first true moments of genius from a young Dee Dee Bridgewater! The album's a Japanese only release (proof that they're always hipper to our jazz artists than we are!) – and it features Dee Dee singing material that's quite different than her later R&B-inflected sides from the late 70s – very soaring and spiritual work, delivered in a way that set a whole new standard for jazz at the time! Backing is by a small combo with brothers Ron and Cecil Bridgewater, plus Roland Hanna on acoustic and electric piano, George Mraz on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums and percussion – but the star of the set is always Dee Dee, who sparkles beautifully on the album's classic versions of "Afro Blue" and "Little B's Poem" – both of which have been redone by many other singers over the years. Other great cuts include "People Make The World Go Round", "Love From The Sun", and "Love Vibrations". CD

Brilliant work from this long-lost Barry White protege! Tom Brock was one of the leading lights in Barry's stable of sweet mid 70s soul talents – a great writer who contributed songs to the legendary Gloria Scott album, and a heck of a great mellow soul singer on his own – with a style that's right up there with work by Leon Ware, Leroy Hutson, and some of our favorite 70s soul heroes! This album's the only one that Brock ever recorded – a great blend of mellow soul tunes, ballads, and a few tracks that have a nicely kicking Barry White-styled funk sound to them. One of the few albums ever cut by the team of Octavio Burnier and Claudio Cartier – a mid 70s Brazilian duo with a sweet and soulful finish! Both Burnier and Cartier play guitar – but not in a spare, Baden Powell-like way. Instead, they've got a sound that's very full – touched with much of the Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s, and given a smooth electric finish that makes for some very nice grooves. The guitar work is excellent – jamming away on tracks that also sport keyboards, electric bass, and vocals by a variety of singers – including Roberto Quartin, Alberto Arantes, Sonia Burnier, and Jaime Luiz. Mr Bongo (UK), 2009. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Jazzy folk soul survivor Terry Callier returns to Mr Bongo with Hidden Conversations – with Terry's soul searching lyricism, warm vocals, and mood setting acoustic guitar paired with laidback production by trip hop pioneer Robert Del Naha of Massive Attack! The styles work pretty well together – Terry's way with a song and his performances are built ready to soar, even at their most stripped down and spare, and his voice and guitar are leading lights of the production, over spacey keys and trippy beats. Terry sings, speaks, scats, and tells stories wonderfully, and we're as proud as ever to have him as our Chicago-to-the-cosmos soul sage! Ian Carr with NucleusBelladonna ... CD
Vertigo/Mr Bongo (UK), 1972. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
One of the heaviest electric sets from UK trumpeter Ian Carr – and that's really saying a lot, given how much heavy work he cut with his group Nucleus! The sound here is a groundbreaking mix of acoustic horns and keyboards – trumpet from Carr, and a mix of tenor, soprano, alto, and flute from Brian Smith – coming into contact with the Fender Rhodes of Dave MacRae and the Hohner electric of Gordon Beck! The pairing of keys is wonderful – and the whole thing is sewn together by the guitar of a young Allan Holdsworth, who's very much in the sway of Carr's sound here, instead of the later directions he'd take as a leader. The set might be worth it alone for the massive "Summer Rain" – a slow funk track that trips along beautifully – but the whole thing's great, and other titles include "Belladonna", "Mayday", "Suspension", and "Hector's House". Production and arrangements are by Arthur Verocai – which will give you an idea of the creativity that went into the record – as Verocai creates all these ambitious grooves that are very much in the best territory of some of the funky Marcos Valle work at the start of the 70s – basslines dipping under strings, all topped with Celia's wonderful vocals – which have a power here that we've never heard on other records – almost a Gal Costa sort of touch! Tracks include tunes by Valle, Verocai, and others – and titles include "Em Familia", "Mia", "Vida De Artista", "Dominus Tecum", "Ay Adelita", "Toda Quarta Feira Depois Do Amor", "A Hora E Essa", "E Preciso Dizer ADeus", and "Badalacao". One of the richest, most expressive albums ever from the great Gal Costa – a set from her immediate post-Tropicalia years, and one that shows that she's got a lot more to offer than just a wild sense of experimentation! Gilberto Gil is the musical director here – with help from Rogerio Duprat and Arthur Verocai – and the album's got the lofty feel you'd expect from all three talents – a rich blend of all the modern developments in Brazilian music that had taken place in the 60s, but infused with a newly rootsy sense as well – one that takes the whole thing back to a personal, expressive territory that's really wonderful. Instrumentationincludes work on keyboards by Wagner Tiso and Tenorio Jr, plus a bit of guitar from Roberto Menescal – and Gal does a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Relance" – alongside other tracks that include "Passarinho", "Da Maior Imortancia", "India", "Volta", and the funky "Pontos De Luz". Sony/Mr Bongo (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $10.99 12.98
Heavy funk from a hip Japanese combo – one that features lots of drums and percussion from leader Akira Ishikawa, plus plenty of guitar, keyboards, and hard-riffing horns! Akira's taking most of his cues here from American funk of the early 70s – work by Incredible Bongo Band, BT Express, and others – but he often serves up the music with a fair bit of conga work at the front of the arrangements, in a way that takes familiar tunes and gives them a much rootsier, earthier kind of groove! The approach is unique, but totally great – and the album's a funk album unlike anything else we can think of – quite unusual even for the experimental Japanese scene of the time. A fantastic bit of funky fusion from Brazil – one of the most hard-hitting albums we've ever heard from keyboardist Cesar Mariano! Mariano had a long legacy in music that included great arrangements for Elis Regina – but this set is completely different than most of his other work – almost in a CTI Records sort of vein, as if Mariano were trying to follow the mode of his contemporary Deodato – but with a stronger current of Brazilian jazz, especially all of the complexity that was coming into that music at the time. Most of the instrumentation is electric – with a great mix of guitars, bass, and keyboards – but there's also nice use of acoustic bass and piano – for a groove that's both funky, but also touched with strong elements of Brazilian jazz. Titles include the cool funky track "Metropole", the break cut "Fabrica", and the mellow groover "Imigrantes" – as well as the tunes "Metro", "Litoral", and "Futebol De Bar". LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderfully hard-to-categorize album from the start of the 80s – a Mexican record that mixes folkloric roots with electronic instrumentation – but all in a way that sounds much more ancient than you'd expect for the time! The fusion of modes here is wonderful – almost at a level that reminds us of some of the Graeme Revell experiments of the mid 80s, or some of the more organic electronics from Japan – as the whole thing feels a lot more acoustic than electric, with a wonderful blend of woody sounds, percussion, and other great elements. Titles include "In Altepetal Tonal", "I Pan In Xiktli Metztli", "Xochiyaoyoloh", and "Ketzalkoatl Yauh Miktlan". LP, Vinyl record album

CBS/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 27.99
A fantastic bit of female funk from the 70s – and a set that was recorded in Germany by a very exotic singer! The album is Asha Puthli's first – and includes some unusual interpretations of work by JJ Cale, John Lennon, Bill Withers, and George Harrison – plus a great tune of her own – set to these cool backings that have lots of spacey electric modes blended with smoother funk passages – kind of a precursor to later Munich disco modes, but with a slower, slinkier feel. Asha's voice is very weird – a bit in the "love to love you baby" mode, and with a range of sounds that moves up and down the scale almost as much as Minnie Riperton. The record's got a nice mix of jazzy arrangements, and Asha's unique high-pitched vocals work great on tracks like "Lies", "Right Down Here", "I Dig Love", "Truth", "I Am A Song", "Let Me In Your Life", and "This Is Your Life". GSF/Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 27.98
An undisputed funk classic – even back in the days before anyone ever said the phrase "funk classic"! This album must have been deleted the day it came out – because even though it's attained legendary proportions with groovers worldwide, it's always been hard to find – even back in the 70s! But unlike so many other "rare-but-not great" funk albums, this one's a killer – with a hard funky wah wah sound that we'd rank up there with James Brown's best work on Polydor from the early 70s, and which should have made Joe a millionaire, not a lost legend of soul music. The band is sharp as a knife – with hard drums, tight bass, and some simply amazing guitar riffing. But the best part is Joe – as his vocals are hard and emotional, with just the right touches of righteousness to carry off the album's political messages, but not too much as to spoil the party that the band's having in the background! Every single track is a winner, and if we were ever to make a list of the top five funk albums to own, this one would be on it! Titles include "The Way They Do My Life", "I Got So Much Trouble On My Mind", "The Trouble With Trouble", "Give Me Back My Freedom", "Live Like Brothers", and "Find Yourself". LP, Vinyl record album

Essiebons/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 27.98
The funky Rob way is a massive one at that – a new path into Afro Funk modes for the 70s, with a groove that's made this set a collectors classic for decades! The group is tighter than most, yet more skittish too – percussion rattling alongside basslines that have these echoey qualities that go deep and dark, but with more of a soul-based style than some of the psych-influence work from Zimbabwe and other scenes of the time! Spare electronic bits come into play with the keyboards, guitar, drums, and bass – but at a level that's never overdone – just enough to keep things slightly offbeat and unsettling, while Rob himself grooves away in the lead! It's almost impossible to describe in words what makes this set so unique – but one drop of the needle will have you hooked for life – thanks to cuts that include "Funky Rob Way", "Forgive Us All", "Boogie On", "Just One More Time", "More", and "Your Kiss Stole Me Away". A fantastic set from 70s South Africa – and a record that maybe has a lot more of an American funk vibe than you'd expect! The style is nice and lean, and is often in a mode that echoes some of the cooler underground disco of the late 70s on the east coast – almost as if these cuts could have come from one of the P&P family of labels, instead of South Africa's big Gallo imprint – save for some especially nice moments that almost recall the early 70s electric funk of Hugh Masekela! All tunes are nice and long, all instrumentals – and the "disco specials" are original tunes that mix clubby rhythms with a variety of different sounds and styles – really cool, very fresh, and not even in the same territory as some of the West African/Paris hybrids of the time. Trio Mocoto first rose to fame as the funky band behind Jorge Ben on his early 70s classics – the combo that gave him such a soulful sound – and here on their own, they sound pretty darn great – with a style that follows the same evolution as Jorge's own sound at the time! The core elements are still a mix of funk, samba, and soul – but there's also a slightly warmer sound to the production – one that really ties the whole thing together, and maybe gives the group even more force than before! One of the most important early albums by Marcos Valle – a set of instrumental tracks recorded with lots of acoustic guitar! Even though Valle was well known as a singer and composer of bossa nova tunes, the set instead focuses on his instrumental work – recording his guitar ala Jobim or Bonfa at the time – with some larger arrangements from Deodato, who really brings a great feel to the set! The sound is tremendous – as sweeping strings soar over tight rhythms from drummer Wilson Das Neves – and Valle and Deodato set some magical moods on tunes that include "Deus Brasileiro", "Vamos Pranchar", "Tanto Andei", "Seu Encanto", "Batucada Surgiu", "Dorme Profundo", and "Os Grilos" – the first ever recording of "Crickets Sing For Anamaria"! Som Livre/Mr Bongo (UK), 1983. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
Marcos Valle might look a bit sad and forlorn with all those fruity drinks on the cover – but the record itself is a wonderfully upbeat session, and one that's very much in the same modern soul mode of his 80s groove Vontade De Rever Voce! As on that record, the sound here shows strong traces of Marcos' early 80s collaborations with Leon Ware in California – and the overall groove is a nice mix of boogie, two step, and smoother soul – a genre that we never would have expected during Valle's bossa years, but which comes off tremendously well here! There's lots of warmly stepping bass amidst smooth jazzy horns – and the tracks all have a compressed groove that keeps things nice and crisp – plenty classy, in a way that's supremely appealing if you dig early 80s mellow soul. Titles include a remake of "Viola Enluarada", plus "Naturalmente", "Estrelar", "Samba De Verao", "Dia D", "Mals Que Amor" ,"Fogo Do Sol", "Tapa No Real", and "Tapetes Guardanapos Cetins". CD

One of the coolest albums ever cut by Japanese wood flute player Hozan Yamamoto – a set that has him working with very groovy backings from the Sharps & Flats ensemble – who almost give the whole thing an MPS label blending of funky jazz and world music sounds! The approach is wonderful – a bit more upbeat and swinging than some of Yamamoto's other records, as Nobuo Hara leads the larger group with a totally cool sound – which makes the flute lines a sweet exotic touch over straightforward, soul-drenched, big band jazz! We might even link the sound to some of Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess/Cadet – although with flute, instead of harp – and titles include "Komoro Mago-Uta", "Soma Bon-Uta", "Kokirio Bushi", "Sado Okesa", "Tairyo Utaikomi", and "Kuroda-Bushi". We've always loved the music of Hozan Yamamoto – the Japanese flute player who really has a way of mixing his instrument with all sorts of weird and unusual modes – from traditional folk styles, to bossa nova, to funk and jazz as well! Here, though, Hozan may well be outdoing himself – as the record's a very cool soundtrack, done for a film that's translated as Devil's Flute – with Yamamoto's instrument in the lead, but set to some cool 70s-styled tracks that show plenty of work from keyboardist Yu Imai – sometimes in a funky cop/crime mode, sometimes a bit more gentle – but always pretty great all the way through! A record with "samba" in the title, but a set that hardly sounds like samba at all – given that the record is one of the groundbreaking 70s albums from the legendary Tom Ze! Ze first rose to fame as an experimentalist in the Tropicalia scene – but here, he's years past that movement, yet still one of its most creative proponents – working in a mode that takes older Brazilian rhythms and infuses them with all the new sounds, styles, and sense of poetry that Tom was bringing to his music – often quite playful, but at a level that's quite moving as well. The whole thing's got the subtle "beyond language" power of some of the best by Caetano Veloso – even though Tom Ze is completely his own man throughout. The set features arrangements from Jose Briamonte, production from Heraldo Do Monte, and titles that include a rootsy take on "A Felicidade", plus the nutty instrumental "Toc", and the original tracks "So", "Ma", "Vai", "Ui", "Indice", "Hein", and "Mae". Titles include "Presente Grego", "Caboclo", "Pelas Sombras", "O Mapa", "Sylvia", "Karina", "Velho Parente", and "Dedicada A Ela". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tom ZeEstudando O Samba ... LP
Continental/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The set features arrangements from Jose Briamonte, production from Heraldo Do Monte, and titles that include a rootsy take on "A Felicidade", plus the nutty instrumental "Tom", and the original tracks "So", "Ma", "Vai", "Ui", "Indice", "Hein", and "Mae". Funky funky Brazil! Mr. Bongo have done it again, and unleashed a killer set of rare funky Brazilian tracks – one that includes some of the most in-demand sample tracks from the old days, plus a few new remixes of other titles. Some of the cuts on the set used to be out on vinyl reissues back in the early 90s, but nearly all of them are hard to find now – and the selection of material is fantastic! The whole thing's packaged on 2LPs, in a great package, with a total of 18 cuts in all. Titles include "Nebulosa" by Tenorio Jr, "Cidade Vazia" by Milton Banana, "Celebration Suite" by Airto, "Bob" by Otto, "Carolina Carol Bela" by Jorge Ben & Toquinho, "Eu Sou Mais Eu" by Ana Mazzotti, "Barumba" by Dom Salvador, "Deus Me Faca Funky" by Skowa & Mafia, "Swinga Samambay" by Trio Mocoto, "Hot Pants Road" by Boogaloo Combo, "Ye Mele" by Luiz Carlos Vinhas, and "Brazilian Beat (dope mix)" by Masters At Work! Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great set of Latin grooves – and a fitting followup to Bongo's Brazilian Beats set! Forget the "tribute to Tito" in the title – because this is more just a great compilation of hard Latin than it is any sort of homage to the great Latin percussionist! But Tito is on the record, as well as a host of older Latin artists from the Latin Soul and Latin Funk eras, as well as a few newer players. There's a total of 18 cuts in all – including "Tito's Odyssey", Watu Wasuri", "Black Breother", "110th & 5th Ave", and Hit The Bongo" by Tito, plus "Hotel Alyssa Soussie" by Sabu Martinez, "Rompe Cocorico" by Juan Pablo Torres, "Om Mani Padme Hum" by Sahib Shihab, "Jive Samba" by Jack Costanzo & Jerry Woo, "Soul Drummers" by Ray Barretto, "Tighten Up" by Al Escobar, "Babarabatiri" by Beny More, "Land Of Love" by Louie Ramirez, "Coccinando" by Ray Barretto, and "Nervous Track (Yellow mix)" by Nuyorican Soul. Also features a Bongo remix of Tito's "Oye Como Va"! A good set, and the kind of solid batch of Latin you can put in the crate next to the NuYorica and Latin Spectrum comps! CD

A holy grail of 70s African Funk – and not just for the unusual look of the cover! The set's a really unique one – almost rootsier than most of the better-known Ghanian grooves of the time, but funkier too – with a brilliant blend of raw percussion, quirky basslines, and some smoking horn parts that are a lot more American soul and funk than the usual 70s African groove! The whole thing's stunning all the way through – a record that totally informs an understanding of its generation, yet in ways that no other record can touch. Wonderful all the way through, with not a bit of filler – and all cuts are right on the money for any fan of African funk! Heavy bass, tight percussion, and a wonderfully trippy groove – the stunning second album from Cymande, and one of our funk favorites from the 70s! These guys have a sound that's completely unique – a vibe that mixes African and Jamaican influences up in the heady London scene of the early 70s – with results that were years ahead of their time, and which still go onto blow many minds all these years later! The bass alone is worth the price of admission – as dubby as anything from Kingston, but with a tighter focus – one that drives some sinister lines from the vocals, and which gets strong support from lots of lively conga passages. There's a slight stoner undercurrent, but the sound of the set is never sleepy at all – and titles include the classic "Anthracite", "Fug", and "Them & Us" – plus "Genevive", "Willie's Headache", "For Baby Ooh", "Bird", and "Crawshay". A set that's maybe one of the greatest bossa jazz albums of all time – and a fantastic homegrown Brazilian effort that's quite different from the more commercial American bossa albums of the 60s! Tenorio Jr isn't just a hell of a pianist, he's a great writer and arranger too – one who's got an amazing ear for color and tone, balanced out with some completely sublime grooves – not smooth coffee shop bossa nova, but instead the harder sort of rhythms that were cooked up by the best combos in Brazil! The tunes are as warm and soulful as they are tight and angular – a perfect summation of the bossa jazz idiom at its truest expression – and the writing is fantastic throughout, with original songs that really provide a fresh change from some of the too-played hits of the generation. Instrumentation includes trombone from Raul De Souza, drums from Milton Banana, tenor from Meirelles, and alto sax from Paulo Moura – on titles that include the classic groover "Nebulosa", plus the tracks "Clouds", "Nectar", "Embalo", and "Estou Nessa Agora". 70s psychedelia from the northeastern state of Pernambuco, Brazil – incredible stuff that combines rawly percussive tropical sounds with a world of psychedelic creativity and possibilities – one of the best compilations ever put together by Mr Bongo! Lula Cortes was a pivotal figure in the scene and he's pretty well represented here, including his influential recordings with Ze Remalho. Even more exciting, though, is the stuff we've never been fortunate enough to hear before now – and there's a pretty good deal of it! The fusion of global psych and folk sounds into a distinctly Brazilian sound is nothing short of amazing – regional and traditional percussion underneath sitars, lutes, keyboards and more. It features songs by the great Lula Cortes & Ze Ramalho, Geraldo Azevedo & Alceu Valenca, Marconi Notaro, Flaviola E O Bando Do Sol and The Gentleman. 19 tracks in all: "Sorriso Delvagem" by The Gentlemen, "O Tempo" and "Desespero" by Flaviola E O Bando Do Sol, "Antropologica", "Maracatu" and "Fidelidade" by Marconi Notaro, "Mister Misterio", "Virgem Virginia" and more by Geraldo Azevedo & Alceu Valenca, "Bailado Das Muscarias" and "Maracas De Fogo" by Lula Cortes & Ze Ramalho, "Noite Preta" by Lula Cortes and more. An amazing bit of soul – and one of the rarest funk records of the 70s! This masterpiece was recorded by The Jackson Sisters, a semi-gospelly soul group that has a sound that's a bit like The Voices of East Harlem, but that's a lot harder, and that has a deeper soul sound overall! At times, the group is funky – as on their incredible track "I Believe In Miracles", a rare groove classic if there ever was one, and one of the most in-demand tracks we've ever stocked. At other times, the girls have a mellower soul sound, with great raw harmonies that remind us of the Volt work by The Emotions, but with much rougher instrumental backing. A sweet set from that great record moment when Latin styles were coming into play with the hipper sounds of the bachelor pad world! Jack "Bongo" Burger was a west coast percussionist with a very similar style to Jack "Mr Bongo" Costanzo – and in fact, since they're both named Jack, and have a bongo middle name, we always wonder whether or not they're the same person! Whatever the case, this album's a tasty batch of bongo-heavy tracks – with a style that's similar to some of Costanzo's work on Liberty, although perhaps with slightly less of a Latin bent. The group includes Buddy Collette on flute and sax, plus piano, trumpet, electric bass, and some nice odd percussion.
