✨✧ VariousMr Bongo Record Club – Vol 1 ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mr Bongo really goes back to its roots here – and returns to the kind of rare global gems that first made us fall in love with the label in the first place! Over 20 years ago, Mr Bongo were one of the key global forces in opening up people's ears to the sounds of funk and soul from around the globe – digging up rare nuggets from out of the way places that might have echoed American styles, but turned them on their ear – or the kinds of cuts that were completely unique, but which could stand next to the kind of funky 45s that were being sampled for hip hop! This collection brings together some of the best cuts that continue that legacy – some rare singles, some obscure European tracks, and lots of others you never would have discovered otherwise – with titles that include "Deixa A Tristeza", "Piranha" by Alipio Martins, "Seara De Oxala" by Barbosa, "Mathar" by Dave Pike Set, "Freak" by Tappa Zukie, "Mama Hot Daddy Cool" by Big Youth, "Fish & Funjee" by Lantei Lamptey, "Karam Bani" by Buari, "Handsome Boy (parts 1 & 2)" by The Rwenzoris, "He's Forever" by King James Version, "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver" by Cortez, and "Can't Live Without You" by Connie Laverne. Incredible Bongo BandBongo Rock/Apache ... 7-inch
Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. Near Mint- ... $18.99
Two of the greatest songs ever from the Incredible Bongo Band – brought together here in a special limited edition picture sleeve! "Bongo Rock" is a killer – a tune with a massive break that's been sampled countless times, and which has this amazing percussion part in the middle, mixed with lots of very cool horn effects! "Apache" is maybe even more classic – one of THE cuts that gave birth to hip hop – with a break you'll recognize instantly, and this mad groove that's plenty great on its own! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ AfroreggaeFavela Uprising ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 2007. Used ... $3.99
Way more than you might expect from the title – not just a simple reggae band, but a Brazilian group affiliated with a social organization of the same name – dedicated to making change in the rough-edged culture of the favelas! Afroreggae certainly do have a bit of reggae in their groove, but their sounds are often warmer and more soulful too – in rhythms that don't always hit a Jamaican-styled mode, and which bring in some Brazilian elements as well. Titles include "Mais Uma Chance", "Partida", "Haiti", "Coisa De Negao", "A Parada E Outra", and "Aguas De Moloch". CD

Akofa AkoussahAkofa Akoussah ... CD
Sonafric/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A beautiful record from Akofa Akoussah – a singer from Togo who's equally gifted in funky and sweeter soul styles! Half the record is full-on funk, and we'd swear that Lafayette Afro Rock Band must have had a hand in some of the instrumentation (possible, as it was recorded in Paris) – as there's reed lines and trippy electric elements that feel like they're very much their work – especially the way they could make things wig out around the edges of the mix! And if they're not on the record, the sound is very similar on the funky numbers – which then leaves the sweeter tracks to bring in a bit more of an acoustic balance, and really foreground Akofa's amazing voice. Titles include "Tango", "La Lem", "Mitso Aseye", "Dandou Kodjo", "G Blem Di", and "Kimumbu". CD

Gyedu-Blay AmbolleyAmbolley ... LP
Cougar/Mr Bongo (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 21.98
A really well-crafted set of funk from the legendary Gyedu-Blay Ambolley – maybe best known for his material in the mid 70s, but sounding equally wonderful here on an album from the start of the 80s! The sound is sharper and more sophisticated than before – recorded in London, with a great ear for the many possibilities of basslines, keyboard parts, and rhythms – used in modes that embrace a wider range of soul styles, but which also don't sound anything at all like mainstream R&B! A few tracks feature more familiar highlife rhythms, but most are in this new breed laid down by Ambolley – on titles that include "Walking Down The Street", "Frafranta", "Adwoa", "Cut Your Coat", "Cause I Love You", and a great funky remake of "Simigwa" – maybe worth the price of the album alone, thanks to percussion that almost rivals the Incredible Bongo Band. An amazing bit of Brazilian funk – and the best album ever by this exciting soulful duo! The record's their first, and it's got a crackling intensity that you don't always find on their other albums – a groove that mixes hard samba with bass-heavy funk, with a sound that makes them one of the most important forces of the Samba Soul generation! There's lots here to love if you like the heavy grooves of Jorge Ben or Tim Maia – but the duo also have a really great approach of their own – especially in the way they'll trade voices back and forth, over grooves that also have plenty of back/forth action too! The record includes the amazing heavy piano/percussion jammer "Hipnose", plus the great cuts "Voce Abusou", "Kabaluere", "Se Quiser Valer", "Deus O Salve", "Nord West", and "Dalena". CD

AzymuthAguia Nao Come Mosca ... CD
Atlantic/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". Trio/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
One of the greatest jazz vocal albums of all time – and one of the first true moments of genius from a young Dee Dee Bridgewater! The album's a Japanese only release (proof that they're always hipper to our jazz artists than we are!) – and it features Dee Dee singing material that's quite different than her later R&B-inflected sides from the late 70s – very soaring and spiritual work, delivered in a way that set a whole new standard for jazz at the time! Backing is by a small combo with brothers Ron and Cecil Bridgewater, plus Roland Hanna on acoustic and electric piano, George Mraz on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums and percussion – but the star of the set is always Dee Dee, who sparkles beautifully on the album's classic versions of "Afro Blue" and "Little B's Poem" – both of which have been redone by many other singers over the years. Other great cuts include "People Make The World Go Round", "Love From The Sun", and "Love Vibrations". CD

Burnier & CartierBurnier & Cartier (1974) ... LP
RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
One of the few albums ever cut by the team of Octavio Burnier and Claudio Cartier – a mid 70s Brazilian duo with a sweet and soulful finish! Both Burnier and Cartier play guitar – but not in a spare, Baden Powell-like way. Instead, they've got a sound that's very full – touched with much of the Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s, and given a smooth electric finish that makes for some very nice grooves. The guitar work is excellent – jamming away on tracks that also sport keyboards, electric bass, and vocals by a variety of singers – including Roberto Quartin, Alberto Arantes, Sonia Burnier, and Jaime Luiz. Titles include "Marcante", "Europanema", "Lembrando Ed Kleiger", "Lejos De Mi", "Aldeia Global", and "So Tem Lugar Pra Voce". LP, Vinyl record album

A beautifully groovy album from Celia Reis – maybe the hippest set ever from this Brazilian singer who was equally at home in samba and bossa modes! Production and arrangements are by Arthur Verocai – which will give you an idea of the creativity that went into the record – as Verocai creates all these ambitious grooves that are very much in the best territory of some of the funky Marcos Valle work at the start of the 70s – basslines dipping under strings, all topped with Celia's wonderful vocals – which have a power here that we've never heard on other records – almost a Gal Costa sort of touch! Tracks include tunes by Valle, Verocai, and others – and titles include "Em Familia", "Mia", "Vida De Artista", "Dominus Tecum", "Ay Adelita", "Toda Quarta Feira Depois Do Amor", "A Hora E Essa", "E Preciso Dizer ADeus", and "Badalacao". Jose Conde Y Ola FrescaRevolucion ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 2007. Used ... $3.99
Contemporary Latin from the New York scene – and a set with plenty of funky undercurrents too! Jose Conde is American born, but with Cuban roots – and he works here with a batch of younger players in a style that links together older modes from Havana with evolutions of the Latin sound in New York over recent decades. Despite a modern production style, the overall sound is still quite lean and clean – nicely snapping on the percussion, and punctuated with plenty of great horn bits throughout. Ziggy Modeliste plays guest drums on a few numbers, but the core percussion sound of the group is already great enough – and titles include "Descarga Inez", "Oshiri Pan Pan", "Ride La Ola", "El Titere", "Despelote", "El Chacal", "Llego La Ola", and "Ritmo Y Sabor". CD features 3 bonus tracks too – "Mi Musica", "Summertime", and "Pititi Y Titi (Spanish)". CD

Bukky Leo & Black EgyptAfrobeat Visions ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 2005. Used ... $9.99
A long-overdue album from saxophonist Bukky Leo – a player with roots in 70s Ethiopia, and a range of experiences that also includes key recordings in the early British acid jazz scene! Bukky's got a resume that includes work with Fela and Tony Allen – and he's working here in a mode that's very similar to recent work by the latter – an updated version of older Afro Funk styles, augmented slightly by additional keyboards and a warmer, more dancefloor-styled groove – but a core sound that's highly rhythmic, very acoustic, and filled with great work on guitar, sax, and flute! Bukky's also singing a fair bit on the record too – calling out the lyrics with a raspy warmth that's a lot more personal than some of Tony Allen's more abstract vocalizations on recent work – and the record's got a really focused feel that makes it one of the best takes on Afro Funk we've heard in a good number of years! Titles include "Ake Bo Je", "Times Like These", "Dreamer", "Dem Go Shout", "Secular Society", "His Majesty", "The Vision", and "Why Can't We Live Together". CD

Tim MaiaTim Maia (1977) ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 24.98
70s soul from Brazil – and a tremendously strong effort from the legendary Tim Maia! This record was Tim's first after an initial run on Polydor – and it shows Maia tightening up his groove even more, but still avoiding the slicker sounds of later years. There's a really focused sound here that's totally great – one that shows that Maia's work was hardly just some happy cross-cultural accident, and instead the careful work of an artist who was out to challenge the best American soul acts of the time! There's a warm little groove to most of the tracks – tripping along lightly in the vein of some of our favorite US mellow soul from the mid 70s – an approach that's mostly soul, but with some funky undercurrents – and often smooth, but never cloying or overly commercial. Titles include "Ride Twist & Roll", "Flores Belas", "Let It All Hang Out", "Sem Voce", "E Necessario", "Leva O Meu Blue", "Pense Menos", and "Musica Para Betinha". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marcelo D2Looking For The Perfect Beat ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 2004. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A funky fusion of post-millenium Brazilian club groove and contemporary hip hop from Marcelo D2! MD2 does a great job of demonstrating the all inclusive groove at the core of disparate musical elements. Almost every tune has a sound rooted in percussive samba, but the vibe stretches through programmed and organic beats, bass, keys and scratches – courtesy of Mixmaster Mike! The album was produced by "fourth Beastie" Mario Caldato – who really brings his hip hop pedigree to the sound in ways that he did not when he produced Seu Jorge's album! Seu Jorge makes a behind-the-scenes appearance on the album, as does Shabazz The Disciple. The raps are in Portuguese, the groove has nu samba feel, with traces of electro, house, and hip hop love that stretches from Sugarhill to Shaolin. Tracks include "Pra Posteridade", "Vai Vendo", "A Maldicao Do Samba", "Loadeando", "Qual E?", "Batucada", "Eu Tiro E Onda" and more! CD

A really unusual album from the South African scene of the 80s – served up by a blind quartet who partly echo the styles of other vocal ensembles of the period, but done with a mish-mash of styles that really keeps the whole thing interesting! The album's maybe best-remembered for a few clubby groovers that bring the harmonies together with some post-disco boogie modes – and those cuts dominate the record, balanced by a few mellower ballads and more spiritual numbers. Rozenblit/Mr Bongo (UK), 1967. Used ... $11.99
A weird and wild little record from Os Canibais – at first glance, a familiar rockish set from late 60s Brazil – but upon deeper listening, a nicely tripped-out album in all the right places! Os Canibais have a touch of the Jovem Guarda groove – that Brazilian style of copping bits of Anglo rock from up north – but like some of the hippest South American acts at the time, they find ways of making the familiar sound very odd – weird little twists and turns on guitar, organ, and even production – already great on their covers of familiar tunes – but even wilder on their own numbers, which definitely have a psych quality right away – especially on the organ, which is really moody and dark! Titles include "Nosso Romance", "Se Voce Quer", "A Praca", "Ao Meu Amor", "Lindo Sonho", and "O Prego". CD

CBS/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
A fantastic bit of female funk from the 70s – and a set that was recorded in Germany by a very exotic singer! The album is Asha Puthli's first – and includes some unusual interpretations of work by JJ Cale, John Lennon, Bill Withers, and George Harrison – plus a great tune of her own – set to these cool backings that have lots of spacey electric modes blended with smoother funk passages – kind of a precursor to later Munich disco modes, but with a slower, slinkier feel. Asha's voice is very weird – a bit in the "love to love you baby" mode, and with a range of sounds that moves up and down the scale almost as much as Minnie Riperton. The record's got a nice mix of jazzy arrangements, and Asha's unique high-pitched vocals work great on tracks like "Lies", "Right Down Here", "I Dig Love", "Truth", "I Am A Song", "Let Me In Your Life", and "This Is Your Life". GSF/Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $20.99 21.98
An undisputed funk classic – even back in the days before anyone ever said the phrase "funk classic"! This album must have been deleted the day it came out – because even though it's attained legendary proportions with groovers worldwide, it's always been hard to find – even back in the 70s! But unlike so many other "rare-but-not great" funk albums, this one's a killer – with a hard funky wah wah sound that we'd rank up there with James Brown's best work on Polydor from the early 70s, and which should have made Joe a millionaire, not a lost legend of soul music. The band is sharp as a knife – with hard drums, tight bass, and some simply amazing guitar riffing. But the best part is Joe – as his vocals are hard and emotional, with just the right touches of righteousness to carry off the album's political messages, but not too much as to spoil the party that the band's having in the background! Every single track is a winner, and if we were ever to make a list of the top five funk albums to own, this one would be on it! Titles include "The Way They Do My Life", "I Got So Much Trouble On My Mind", "The Trouble With Trouble", "Give Me Back My Freedom", "Live Like Brothers", and "Find Yourself". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic set from 70s South Africa – and a record that maybe has a lot more of an American funk vibe than you'd expect! The style is nice and lean, and is often in a mode that echoes some of the cooler underground disco of the late 70s on the east coast – almost as if these cuts could have come from one of the P&P family of labels, instead of South Africa's big Gallo imprint – save for some especially nice moments that almost recall the early 70s electric funk of Hugh Masekela! All tunes are nice and long, all instrumentals – and the "disco specials" are original tunes that mix clubby rhythms with a variety of different sounds and styles – really cool, very fresh, and not even in the same territory as some of the West African/Paris hybrids of the time. Ebo's got a fair bit of jazz mixed in with his sound – a layering of flute, trombone, tenor, guitar, and keyboard parts with a strong sense of solo – a bit like South African jazz of the period, especially in the way the instruments really open up in the midtempo grooves! Rhythms are laidback, but still nicely present – not as speedy as Afro-Funk, but not much slower either – and there's also room for plenty of lyrics on the tracks, too – although it's the instrumental solos we think we like the best. There's lots of basslines that move carefully along the bottom – never too dubby, but definitely giving the work a nicely stepping style – while offbeat organ, riffing guitar, and other elements move nicely through the mix alongside the very raw vocals of the younger Ebo! At times, we'd almost call the set a Ghanian take on the harder sound of Kingston in the early 70s – and titles include "Mondo Soul Funky", "Swinging Soul For Love", "You've Got Yours Greedy Man", "Every Woman Needs A Helper", "Gotta Take It Cool", "Systems To Love", and "Begging On Knees". Tenorio JrEmbalo ... CD
RGE/Mr Bongo (UK), 1964. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A set that's maybe one of the greatest bossa jazz albums of all time – and a fantastic homegrown Brazilian effort that's quite different from the more commercial American bossa albums of the 60s! Tenorio Jr isn't just a hell of a pianist, he's a great writer and arranger too – one who's got an amazing ear for color and tone, balanced out with some completely sublime grooves – not smooth coffee shop bossa nova, but instead the harder sort of rhythms that were cooked up by the best combos in Brazil! The tunes are as warm and soulful as they are tight and angular – a perfect summation of the bossa jazz idiom at its truest expression – and the writing is fantastic throughout, with original songs that really provide a fresh change from some of the too-played hits of the generation. Instrumentation includes trombone from Raul De Souza, drums from Milton Banana, tenor from Meirelles, and alto sax from Paulo Moura – on titles that include the classic groover "Nebulosa", plus the tracks "Clouds", "Nectar", "Embalo", and "Estou Nessa Agora". A delight through and through – and one we never tire of! CD

A surprisingly nice full-length from Tenth & Parker – a well-done set of tracks that works around jazzy samples, keyboard riffs, and some occasional guest vocals from Mark Murphy! The group's got the same talent for mixing classic sources and new grooves as United Future Organization – with whom Murphy's also worked – and his tracks especially stand out as nice ones, using a bit of a hipster jazz approach that's very different vocally from his 70s work. Jenny Burrell and Billie Godfrey guest on a few other tunes, and other tracks have an instrumental groove-based approach with a sunny finish – and titles include "10 Miles", "Superstar", "Millennium Riddle Song", "Maverick", "Mirage", "Love Almighty", "Warm & Mellow", "Rollin Like Thunder", and "Intro". Trio Mocoto first rose to fame as the funky band behind Jorge Ben on his early 70s classics – the combo that gave him such a soulful sound – and here on their own, they sound pretty darn great – with a style that follows the same evolution as Jorge's own sound at the time! The core elements are still a mix of funk, samba, and soul – but there's also a slightly warmer sound to the production – one that really ties the whole thing together, and maybe gives the group even more force than before! Riffing guitars snap alongside the lively percussion – and the trio trade voices in a mighty nice way – sometimes with a bit of backup from other singers too. Titles include "Nao Adianta", "Toda Tarde", "Rosa", "Onde Anda Voce", "O Meu Violao", and "Xuxu Melao". LP, Vinyl record album

One of the coolest albums ever cut by Japanese wood flute player Hozan Yamamoto – a set that has him working with very groovy backings from the Sharps & Flats ensemble – who almost give the whole thing an MPS label blending of funky jazz and world music sounds! The approach is wonderful – a bit more upbeat and swinging than some of Yamamoto's other records, as Nobuo Hara leads the larger group with a totally cool sound – which makes the flute lines a sweet exotic touch over straightforward, soul-drenched, big band jazz! We might even link the sound to some of Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess/Cadet – although with flute, instead of harp – and titles include "Komoro Mago-Uta", "Soma Bon-Uta", "Kokirio Bushi", "Sado Okesa", "Tairyo Utaikomi", and "Kuroda-Bushi". Continental/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
A record with "samba" in the title, but a set that hardly sounds like samba at all – given that the record is one of the groundbreaking 70s albums from the legendary Tom Ze! Ze first rose to fame as an experimentalist in the Tropicalia scene – but here, he's years past that movement, yet still one of its most creative proponents – working in a mode that takes older Brazilian rhythms and infuses them with all the new sounds, styles, and sense of poetry that Tom was bringing to his music – often quite playful, but at a level that's quite moving as well. The whole thing's got the subtle "beyond language" power of some of the best by Caetano Veloso – even though Tom Ze is completely his own man throughout. The set features arrangements from Jose Briamonte, production from Heraldo Do Monte, and titles that include a rootsy take on "A Felicidade", plus the nutty instrumental "Tom", and the original tracks "So", "Ma", "Vai", "Ui", "Indice", "Hein", and "Mae". Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s/2007. Used ... $3.99
A great reworking of the classic Brazilian Beats series – one that features 32 tracks from the previous 6 volumes, all selected and remixed live by Phat Kev! The package is kind of a Brazilian mixtape overall – of the sort that were floating around a few years back in the underground, but done here in a tight, professional style that's seriously funky – blending older Brazilian beats with contemporary production modes, but always in a way that keeps the spirit of the originals intact! Kev doesn't do too much to the core tunes – but does have a way of stepping lively from one number to the next – and titles in the mix include "Eu Sou Mais Eu" by Anna Mazzotti, "O Journaleiro" by Toni Tornado, "La Lupita" by Nico Gomez, "A Festa" by Silvio Cesar, "Nao Aquento Voce" by Trio Esperanca, "Marcos" by Quarteto Uai, "Hot Pants Road" by Boogaloo Combo, "Carolina" by Seu Jorge, "Take Me Back To Piaui" by Juca Chaves, "Deus Me Faca Funky" by Skowa & Mafia, "Summertime" by Rosina De Valencia, "Carolina Carol Bela" by Jorge Ben & Toquinho, "Samblues" by Sambalanca Trio, and "Barumba" by Dom Salvador. The always surprising, always funky, always great Brazilian Beats series goes one volume deeper! The far-reaching tendencies of Brazilian Beats never fails to impress, and nearly overwhelm. Number 5 keeps the contemporary club and dancefloor scheme well out front, with appearances by many of the gods and goddesses of Brazilian musical culture like Elis Regina and Mario Castro Neves on the set, younger innovators like Bossa Tres, and a slew of talents that introduce some really incredible breakbeat and hip hop influences! It takes a special track list to seamlessly string elements of bossa and samba with such seemingly disparate contemporary club sounds – but that's why we keep following these compilations, isn't it? 18 tracks in all: Tejo, Black Alien & Speed "Follow Me Follow Me (Sao Benitez Radio Edit)", Stereo Maracana "Freestyle Love", Jorge Ben Jr. "Take It Easy My Brother Charles", Edson Frederico "Bobeira", Marku Ribas "Zamba Ben", Marcelo D2 "A Maldicao Do Samba", Jackson Do Pandeiro "Eu Balanco (Beatfanatic Rework)", Bossa Tres "Imprevisto", Mario Castro Neves & Samba S.A. It's no secret that Brazilians love their football and are pretty darn good at it – but it's a lesser-known fact that they also associate a lot of music with the game! This excellent set is a wonderful document of the link between music and football in Brazil – and features some classic songs that were either recorded by or for footballers, or which in time have come to be associated with the game. As you can imagine from the ferocity of the game, most of the tunes are lively, uptempo, and very groove oriented – which makes the set way more than just a package of sports songs, and an essential set of Brazilian grooves! 70s psychedelia from the northeastern state of Pernambuco, Brazil – incredible stuff that combines rawly percussive tropical sounds with a world of psychedelic creativity and possibilities – one of the best compilations ever put together by Mr Bongo! Lula Cortes was a pivotal figure in the scene and he's pretty well represented here, including his influential recordings with Ze Remalho. Even more exciting, though, is the stuff we've never been fortunate enough to hear before now – and there's a pretty good deal of it! One of the richest, most expressive albums ever from the great Gal Costa – a set from her immediate post-Tropicalia years, and one that shows that she's got a lot more to offer than just a wild sense of experimentation! Gilberto Gil is the musical director here – with help from Rogerio Duprat and Arthur Verocai – and the album's got the lofty feel you'd expect from all three talents – a rich blend of all the modern developments in Brazilian music that had taken place in the 60s, but infused with a newly rootsy sense as well – one that takes the whole thing back to a personal, expressive territory that's really wonderful. An amazing bit of soul – and one of the rarest funk records of the 70s! This masterpiece was recorded by The Jackson Sisters, a semi-gospelly soul group that has a sound that's a bit like The Voices of East Harlem, but that's a lot harder, and that has a deeper soul sound overall! At times, the group is funky – as on their incredible track "I Believe In Miracles", a rare groove classic if there ever was one, and one of the most in-demand tracks we've ever stocked. At other times, the girls have a mellower soul sound, with great raw harmonies that remind us of the Volt work by The Emotions, but with much rougher instrumental backing. This album's the only one they ever cut – and it's just about impossible to find in the original pressing (and in fact, we've never seen a copy!) Apart from the amazing cut "Miracles", this one includes loads of gems like "Rockin' On My Porch", "Shake Her Loose", "(Why Can't We Be) More Than Just Friends", and "Boy, You're Dynamite"! The album's maybe best-remembered for a few clubby groovers that bring the harmonies together with some post-disco boogie modes – and those cuts dominate the record, balanced by a few mellower ballads and more spiritual numbers. Titles include "Toitoi", "Lenyalo", "O Mohau", "Ha Se Nna Fela", "Khomo Tsaka Deile Kae", and "Re A Hlopheh". LP, Vinyl record album

Jack Bongo BurgerLet's Play Bongos ... LP
Hi Fi, Late 50s. Very Good ... $7.99
A very groovy little set – bongos, with lots of great spare moments – presented under the auspices of a percussion instruction record! Jack "Bongo" Burger was similar to Jack "Mr. Bongo" Costanza – that is, he was a west coast studio player who also made a number of albums under his own name, and who could groove pretty hard if he wanted to. This LP is a bongo instructional record with him playing along with a narrator, illustrating different sort of techniques and styles with the narration. The bongo tracks are totally stripped down, with some good spare percussive moments that are just right for lifting and sampling. The narration is nice and goofy, too, and has a very stiff feel to it that contrasts humorously with Jack's lively bongos. Titles include "Clave & Afro", "Modern Jazz Accompaniment", "Basic Bongo Pattern", and "Rim Shots". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some wear with clear tape along all seams.)

✨✧ Jack CostanzoLatin Fever ... LP
Liberty, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $59.99
One of the greatest albums of Latin Jazz ever recorded on the west coast during the 50s – and a landmark session from Jack "Mr Bongo" Costanzo! The album well earns its "fever" claim – as the set smokes from the very first note – Jack's bongos calling the pace, moving fast and furiously to pull in a jazzy mix of tenor, trumpet, flute, and piano – the latter of which is played by the great Eddie Cano! The whole thing's wonderful – as compelling musically as the great image on the front cover, and without any of the kitsch, tricks, or gimmicks that could sometimes hurt a session like this. No-nonsense Latin jazz all the way through – and filled with great tracks that include "Hornacopia", "Latin Fever", "Bajo Numero Uno", "Sax Con Ritmo", "Drum a Mania", and "Cumbanchero". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear.)

Ebo TaylorConflict ... LP
Essiebons (Ghana), 1980. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Beautiful work from the great Ebo Taylor – long tracks filled with the kind of grooves that have made him a funky favorite over the years – and which have kept him going strong into the 21st Century! There's a really unique feel to this record – lots of jazzy inflections that go way beyond some of the standard riffing of Afro Funk – underscored by this positive energy that's a bit hard to describe, but which comes through right away on first listen – almost some of the righteousness of the American spiritual underground, but definitely more Afro-styled overall. Instrumentation features some great tenor, alto, and flute – and guitars and keyboards are handled by Ebo himself. Titles include "You Need Love", "Love & Death", "What Is Life", and "Victory". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent Mr Bongo reissue. Cover has lightly bent corners.)

A great idea for a compilation – older Brazilian grooves re-done by a collective of younger artists! The choice of tunes is impeccable – and tracks include tunes first made famous by the likes of Marcos Valle, Lo Borges, Joyce, Kitty Winter, Sergio Mendes, and others – all performed by a core group of musicians who work the grooves with loads of jazzy touches!
