✨✧ VariousMr Bongo Record Club – Vol 2 ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $23.99 24.98
A record club that's way way cooler than the Columbia House version of the 70s – as the Mr Bongo take on the format features only rare funk tracks from around the world! Most of these tunes here are from vintage Brazilian and African sources – but the tunes still have plenty of elements that you'd know from American soul of the 70s – funky drums, basslines, sweet keyboards, and soulful vocals – served up alongside less familiar elements that really keep things interesting, and which makes for a hell of a compilation overall! Most of these tracks were previously issued on very limited Mr Bongo 45s – brought together here with a set list that includes "Ebony Game" by Guy Chevas, "Awake O Zion" by Elbertina Twinkie Clark, "Family Planning" by Kiru Stars, "Nao Adianta" by Leny Andrade, "Samba Maneiro" by Rosa Maria, "Obrigado Corcovado" by Tom & Dito, "Capoeira" by Joao Diaz, "Harari" by The Beaters, "Merry Go Round" by The Equatics, and "Ecology" by Anubis. Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mr Bongo really goes back to its roots here – and returns to the kind of rare global gems that first made us fall in love with the label in the first place! Over 20 years ago, Mr Bongo were one of the key global forces in opening up people's ears to the sounds of funk and soul from around the globe – digging up rare nuggets from out of the way places that might have echoed American styles, but turned them on their ear – or the kinds of cuts that were completely unique, but which could stand next to the kind of funky 45s that were being sampled for hip hop! This collection brings together some of the best cuts that continue that legacy – some rare singles, some obscure European tracks, and lots of others you never would have discovered otherwise – with titles that include "Deixa A Tristeza", "Piranha" by Alipio Martins, "Seara De Oxala" by Barbosa, "Mathar" by Dave Pike Set, "Freak" by Tappa Zukie, "Mama Hot Daddy Cool" by Big Youth, "Fish & Funjee" by Lantei Lamptey, "Karam Bani" by Buari, "Handsome Boy (parts 1 & 2)" by The Rwenzoris, "He's Forever" by King James Version, "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver" by Cortez, and "Can't Live Without You" by Connie Laverne. GNP, Late 50s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A classic set of west coast Latin from Jack "Mr Bongo" Costanzo! The album's one of Jack's best from the early days – a hard-driving set of short and jazzy numbers that are filled with strong percussion and good solos – showing that LA could cut Latin every bit as great as artists on the New York scene! Eddie Cano's playing piano on the set, and tunes include "Goza Negra", "Bongo Festeris" & "Caravan". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Incredible Bongo BandBongo Rock (180 gram deluxe 40th anniversary edition) ... LP
Pride/Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark album that is perhaps the single most influential beat source in hip hop! The record was the brainchild of bongo player Michael Viner – who also happened to be running the Pride subsidiary of MGM at the time. Viner's got a meeeeeean touch on the bongo, hitting it hard and funky like the best 70s conga players – and his approach to the instrument is kind of like a funky update of popular instrumental styles laid down on guitar by The Ventures or on moog by Hot Butter. This album features the classics "Apache" and "Bongo Rock" – both with monster funky breakdowns that showed up on a heck of a lot of hip hop records over the years – plus loads of other goodies like "Last Bongo In Belgium" and "Bongolia". Excellent stuff – and darn hard to find! (We can still remember how stunned we were when we found our first copy in a Canadian record store back in 1987 – and even then we had to pay plenty!) LP, Vinyl record album
(Super-heavy 40th anniversary reissue – on the same mirror-style cover as the original, with heavy tip-on cover!)

Sonafric/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A beautiful record from Akofa Akoussah – a singer from Togo who's equally gifted in funky and sweeter soul styles! Half the record is full-on funk, and we'd swear that Lafayette Afro Rock Band must have had a hand in some of the instrumentation (possible, as it was recorded in Paris) – as there's reed lines and trippy electric elements that feel like they're very much their work – especially the way they could make things wig out around the edges of the mix! And if they're not on the record, the sound is very similar on the funky numbers – which then leaves the sweeter tracks to bring in a bit more of an acoustic balance, and really foreground Akofa's amazing voice. Titles include "Tango", "La Lem", "Mitso Aseye", "Dandou Kodjo", "G Blem Di", and "Kimumbu". CD

Gyedu-Blay AmbolleyAmbolley ... CD
Cougar/Mr Bongo (UK), 1982. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A really well-crafted set of funk from the legendary Gyedu-Blay Ambolley – maybe best known for his material in the mid 70s, but sounding equally wonderful here on an album from the start of the 80s! The sound is sharper and more sophisticated than before – recorded in London, with a great ear for the many possibilities of basslines, keyboard parts, and rhythms – used in modes that embrace a wider range of soul styles, but which also don't sound anything at all like mainstream R&B! A few tracks feature more familiar highlife rhythms, but most are in this new breed laid down by Ambolley – on titles that include "Walking Down The Street", "Frafranta", "Adwoa", "Cut Your Coat", "Cause I Love You", and a great funky remake of "Simigwa" – maybe worth the price of the album alone, thanks to percussion that almost rivals the Incredible Bongo Band. A holy grail of 70s African Funk – and not just for the unusual look of the cover! The set's a really unique one – almost rootsier than most of the better-known Ghanian grooves of the time, but funkier too – with a brilliant blend of raw percussion, quirky basslines, and some smoking horn parts that are a lot more American soul and funk than the usual 70s African groove! The whole thing's stunning all the way through – a record that totally informs an understanding of its generation, yet in ways that no other record can touch. Wonderful all the way through, with not a bit of filler – and all cuts are right on the money for any fan of African funk! AtmosfearEn Trance ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $20.99 24.98
Some of the greatest club tunes ever cut for the UK scene – a sublime album of jazzy spacey instrumentals by the legendary Atmosfear! The group were almost a UK equivalent of the sounds coming out of New York from the P&P camp at the end of the 70s – as they worked in the shadows of mainstream disco, but with a sound that was leaner, more stripped-down, and often touched with keyboard styles borrowed heavily from jazz funk and fusion. There's a simplicity to the Atmosfear groove that's totally great – a real focus on snapping drums, spacey keyboards, and trippy basslines – never too complicated, but always a cut above the more familiar grooves of the time. Includes "Free Tonight", "Duende", "Creators Dream", "Interplay", "Funk The Rock", "Invasion" and "Return Of LB". LP, Vinyl record album

An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". An excellent album by one of the greatest Brazilian funk bands ever – a wonderful blend of funk, jazz, and soul – and a set that rivals any of the best work coming from the US at the time! These guys are right on the money right from the start – moving through sharp changes with effortless ease, yet never in a way that's too slick or commercial – kind of like that perfect balance that Kool & The Gang hit for just a few records in the mid 70s – but with more of a Brazilian feel overall. Jazzy licks abound – and the keyboards, guitar, and horns are just great – but the set's also got some more regional percussion, too – which really rounds out the record wonderfully. The grooves all have a really universal appeal – essential for any fan of funky sounds – and titles include "Mr Funky Samba", "Junia", "Casa Forte", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Lelbon Via Vaz Lobo", "Baia", "Maria Fumaca", and "Metalurgia". A rare one from Ghanaian legend Gyedu Blay Ambolley – fully in control of a far-reaching funky trip with his Zantoda Mark III group! Control carries on with the most treasured aspects of Ambolley's mid 70s work – the raw percussion, punchy horns and charismatic vocals – but it's tripped out in really cool ways with the addition of some spacey keys and synth. There's a lot to be said for how elegantly the funky Ghana soul instrumentation and spiritual lyricism blend with bubbling spacey touches, making this his most unique effort in that respect, but it's still funk and soul to the core. A beautifully groovy album from Celia Reis – maybe the hippest set ever from this Brazilian singer who was equally at home in samba and bossa modes! Production and arrangements are by Arthur Verocai – which will give you an idea of the creativity that went into the record – as Verocai creates all these ambitious grooves that are very much in the best territory of some of the funky Marcos Valle work at the start of the 70s – basslines dipping under strings, all topped with Celia's wonderful vocals – which have a power here that we've never heard on other records – almost a Gal Costa sort of touch! Tracks include tunes by Valle, Verocai, and others – and titles include "Em Familia", "Mia", "Vida De Artista", "Dominus Tecum", "Ay Adelita", "Toda Quarta Feira Depois Do Amor", "A Hora E Essa", "E Preciso Dizer ADeus", and "Badalacao". One of the richest, most expressive albums ever from the great Gal Costa – a set from her immediate post-Tropicalia years, and one that shows that she's got a lot more to offer than just a wild sense of experimentation! Gilberto Gil is the musical director here – with help from Rogerio Duprat and Arthur Verocai – and the album's got the lofty feel you'd expect from all three talents – a rich blend of all the modern developments in Brazilian music that had taken place in the 60s, but infused with a newly rootsy sense as well – one that takes the whole thing back to a personal, expressive territory that's really wonderful. Instrumentationincludes work on keyboards by Wagner Tiso and Tenorio Jr, plus a bit of guitar from Roberto Menescal – and Gal does a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Relance" – alongside other tracks that include "Passarinho", "Da Maior Imortancia", "India", "Volta", and the funky "Pontos De Luz". A fuzzy mix of styles from Kit Sebastian – a set that reminds us of that late 90s moment when many artists were inspired by Brazilian Tropicalia, and took that inspiration as a way to blend together sounds from many different modes! The record's got touches of funk, psych, and a range of global elements at play – all with maybe some of the moodier production touches you'd hear from the Clutchy Hopkins generation – served up with vocals that are spoken as much as they're sung, maybe echoing a bit of French styles as well! Kit Sebastian is definitely a great illustration of a younger generation that hardly cares where one border ends and another begins – very happy to jump around the globe in pursuit of a groove, yet never hit you over the head while they're doing it. Long live disco, but not the sort that was big on the American scene of the 70s – as Tunde Mabadu serves up a nicely lean version of the music here – filled with Nigerian funk elements, and plenty of his own great work on tenor and alto sax! The tunes are jumpy, jaunty, and plenty darn catchy – maybe more Afro Funk overall, but speeded up a bit from a few years before - with Tunde at the head of a group that features lots of percussion at the bottom, plenty of riffing guitar and bass, sweet keyboard lines, and two trumpets to punctuate his own work in the lead! Tunde sings a bit, too – which response from two lovely female singers – and titles include "Disco Press Funk", "Angelina Sugar Daddy", "African Parowo", "Amupara Ko Ma Dara", and "Alabosi". ✨✧ Tim MaiaTim Maia (1977) ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 24.98
70s soul from Brazil – and a tremendously strong effort from the legendary Tim Maia! This record was Tim's first after an initial run on Polydor – and it shows Maia tightening up his groove even more, but still avoiding the slicker sounds of later years. There's a really focused sound here that's totally great – one that shows that Maia's work was hardly just some happy cross-cultural accident, and instead the careful work of an artist who was out to challenge the best American soul acts of the time! There's a warm little groove to most of the tracks – tripping along lightly in the vein of some of our favorite US mellow soul from the mid 70s – an approach that's mostly soul, but with some funky undercurrents – and often smooth, but never cloying or overly commercial. Titles include "Ride Twist & Roll", "Flores Belas", "Let It All Hang Out", "Sem Voce", "E Necessario", "Leva O Meu Blue", "Pense Menos", and "Musica Para Betinha". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cesar Mariano & CIASao Paulo - Brasil ... CD
RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A fantastic bit of funky fusion from Brazil – one of the most hard-hitting albums we've ever heard from keyboardist Cesar Mariano! Mariano had a long legacy in music that included great arrangements for Elis Regina – but this set is completely different than most of his other work – almost in a CTI Records sort of vein, as if Mariano were trying to follow the mode of his contemporary Deodato – but with a stronger current of Brazilian jazz, especially all of the complexity that was coming into that music at the time. Most of the instrumentation is electric – with a great mix of guitars, bass, and keyboards – but there's also nice use of acoustic bass and piano – for a groove that's both funky, but also touched with strong elements of Brazilian jazz. Titles include the cool funky track "Metropole", the break cut "Fabrica", and the mellow groover "Imigrantes" – as well as the tunes "Metro", "Litoral", and "Futebol De Bar". CD

One of the grooviest Brazilian albums you could ever hope to buy – and one that's not even from Brazil, either! This little gem was recorded in France in the early 70s – but it's got a swinging groove that's very similar to the work of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 during the 60s – upbeat, bossa-inflected, and with a strong undercurrent of jazz! Mesquita's group is a lot like Sergio's – right down to its mix of two vocalists on the lyrics – but there's a few important differences: this group's got one male and one female singer, a lot more percussion than Sergio ever used, and an overall sound that's less pop-oriented, and much harder overall! The whole album's great – tight, driving, and lively, with some incredible production – and titles include "Balanca Pema", "Dabadeia", "Aguas De Marco", "Fechado Pra Balanco", "Zanzibar", and "O Gato". King/Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
60s jazz meets Japanese bamboo flute – all in a session with a great mix of groovy and exotic touches! The record's a unique meeting of jazz and folkloric elements – done in a style that's a bit like some of the late 60s sessions of this nature on MPS, but a fair bit groovier overall – as the tracks are shorter and more focused, and often have a nice sort of bounce at the bottom. Flute is by Minoru Muraoka, and arrangements are by Takashi Ikeda and Kozaburo Yamaki, conducting their New Dimension and New Emotion groups respectively. Bits of sitar bring in an even groovier sound to the record – and the flute itself has some oddly off-kilter notes that further trip out the tunes. Titles include "Soul Bamboo", "Take Five", "The Positive & The Negative", "Call Me", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Scarborough Fair". CD

Certainly one of the greatest albums by this excellent (and oft-overlooked!) group from the 70s! The band of young Bahians deliver a great mix of tracks tinged with bits of rock, funky samba, and even a few psychedelic influences – with alternating male and female vocals, and some excellent songwriting that places the record right up there with some of the best work by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil from the same time! We love this one to death, and find it to be one of the few records by the group that we return to again and again – a real post-Tropicalia classic that's filled with great songs. There's a wild range of influences running through the set – some psychedelic, some baroque pop, and some a bit more rootsy – as the group would explore more deeply in the mid 70s – and throughout the set there's a great sense of play in the music, the kind of tongue in cheek quality that we love in Os Mutantes, and which we never expected so strongly from these guys! The fusion of modes here is wonderful – almost at a level that reminds us of some of the Graeme Revell experiments of the mid 80s, or some of the more organic electronics from Japan – as the whole thing feels a lot more acoustic than electric, with a wonderful blend of woody sounds, percussion, and other great elements. Heavy rock and heavy drums – a fuzzed out classic that's one of the best lost hard rock albums of the 70s! These guys may have been a strange choice for Motown's rock-based Rare Earth label back in the day, but they've more than made a place for themselves in the history books – thanks to some really fierce rocking, and an approach to the drums that's kept the record in more than a few crates over the years – not totally a break record, but with plenty of tight work on the drums and some really monster bass! Yet there's also a sense of tight arrangement here too – a bit like the soulful crackle that came from some of the EMI/Odeon sessions, but served up with a more folklyric sense of instrumentation – lots of percussion, cuica, and other regional elements – sometimes topped with a single horn, or maybe just a string flourish – but never in a way that dampens the earthy energy at the core! Two righteous tracks from Archie Shepp – served up here on a limited edition 45! "Attica Blues" might be the closest thing that Archie ever got to cutting a funk tune – thanks to some great wah-wah guitar in the groove – but the song also has a completely righteous message of power, sung by spiritual singers in a style that's right up there with the best post-Paris sound of Shepp! "Quiet Dawn" is different – moodier and mellow, but still very soulful – with this very odd-tuned vocal line over these rolling, blue-tinged rhythms – peppered gently by horns, but with a very fragile feel too! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Originally a self-released private press effort, this is not at all like the amateurish private press records that so often get reissued as oddities, this is really wonderful stuff – a lost should-be classic! Recorded at LA's legendary Sunset Sound studios, reportedly in a whirlwind 12 hour session, it's got a surprisingly rich sound heavy on funk/funk rock rhythms, soaring vocals, and keyboards that range from electric jazzy to spacey washes of sound that totally earn the band its name! Includes "Welcome To My Door", "Our Love Will Last", "I'm Walking", "Do What You Can Do", "This World", "Everybody's Trying", "Understand", "Fever Pitch", "I'm Only Me" and "Jr. Blaster". CD

The son of the legendary Ebo Taylor serves up a great record of his own – a sweet blend of funky highlife and other 70s-styled grooves – set to short cuts with a nicely compact vibe, and a cool style of production that almost owes a bit to the style of Jamaican music! There's lots of basslines that move carefully along the bottom – never too dubby, but definitely giving the work a nicely stepping style – while offbeat organ, riffing guitar, and other elements move nicely through the mix alongside the very raw vocals of the younger Ebo! At times, we'd almost call the set a Ghanian take on the harder sound of Kingston in the early 70s – and titles include "Mondo Soul Funky", "Swinging Soul For Love", "You've Got Yours Greedy Man", "Every Woman Needs A Helper", "Gotta Take It Cool", "Systems To Love", and "Begging On Knees". Taylor is kind of the guiding force here – as he handles arrangements, and uses his guitar to really shape the groove – but Pat Thomas also gets in lots of great vocals too, usually joined by the other singers – in this mode that makes the whole thing maybe feel a bit more spontaneous and personal than other albums of this nature – especially from the time. Tenorio Jr isn't just a hell of a pianist, he's a great writer and arranger too – one who's got an amazing ear for color and tone, balanced out with some completely sublime grooves – not smooth coffee shop bossa nova, but instead the harder sort of rhythms that were cooked up by the best combos in Brazil! The tunes are as warm and soulful as they are tight and angular – a perfect summation of the bossa jazz idiom at its truest expression – and the writing is fantastic throughout, with original songs that really provide a fresh change from some of the too-played hits of the generation. A record with "samba" in the title, but a set that hardly sounds like samba at all – given that the record is one of the groundbreaking 70s albums from the legendary Tom Ze! Ze first rose to fame as an experimentalist in the Tropicalia scene – but here, he's years past that movement, yet still one of its most creative proponents – working in a mode that takes older Brazilian rhythms and infuses them with all the new sounds, styles, and sense of poetry that Tom was bringing to his music – often quite playful, but at a level that's quite moving as well. The whole thing's got the subtle "beyond language" power of some of the best by Caetano Veloso – even though Tom Ze is completely his own man throughout. The set features arrangements from Jose Briamonte, production from Heraldo Do Monte, and titles that include a rootsy take on "A Felicidade", plus the nutty instrumental "Tom", and the original tracks "So", "Ma", "Vai", "Ui", "Indice", "Hein", and "Mae". The cover is a bit standard, in comparison to the artier look of other Tom Ze albums – but the sound is very forward-thinking, and still hangs onto the best modes of the Tropicalia years – a fantastic blend of Ze's spare soulful songwriting, psychedelic influences, and traces of older baroque production in the mix. Many moments remind us of our favorite albums by the Veloso, Gil, or Gal Costa from 1968 and 1969 – and the album's got some killer songs like "Qualquer Bobagem", "Escolinha Da Robot", "La Vem A Onda", "Distancia", and "Me Da Me De Me Diz". At times, the group is funky – as on their incredible track "I Believe In Miracles", a rare groove classic if there ever was one, and one of the most in-demand tracks we've ever stocked. At other times, the girls have a mellower soul sound, with great raw harmonies that remind us of the Volt work by The Emotions, but with much rougher instrumental backing. This album's the only one they ever cut – and it's just about impossible to find in the original pressing (and in fact, we've never seen a copy!) Apart from the amazing cut "Miracles", this one includes loads of gems like "Rockin' On My Porch", "Shake Her Loose", "(Why Can't We Be) More Than Just Friends", and "Boy, You're Dynamite"! CD

LP, Vinyl record album

The funky Rob way is a massive one at that – a new path into Afro Funk modes for the 70s, with a groove that's made this set a collectors classic for decades! The group is tighter than most, yet more skittish too – percussion rattling alongside basslines that have these echoey qualities that go deep and dark, but with more of a soul-based style than some of the psych-influence work from Zimbabwe and other scenes of the time! Spare electronic bits come into play with the keyboards, guitar, drums, and bass – but at a level that's never overdone – just enough to keep things slightly offbeat and unsettling, while Rob himself grooves away in the lead! It's almost impossible to describe in words what makes this set so unique – but one drop of the needle will have you hooked for life – thanks to cuts that include "Funky Rob Way", "Forgive Us All", "Boogie On", "Just One More Time", "More", and "Your Kiss Stole Me Away". What can we say? This is one of the greats! Foster Sylvers' "Misdemeanor" is one of the greatest-ever funky tunes from the 70s – made famous years back by a DOC sample, but loved way before that by anyone with a funky set of ears! The cut's got this incredibly strange groove – bass sneaking out a rhythm before the drums, both of them still close enough to make things very very funky – and Foster singing over the top in sweet falsetto soul! "When I'm Near You" is a bit sweeter, but has this fantastic snare part that's really wonderful – and a nicely jazzy touch of guitar! 7-inch, Vinyl record

TThe first album by The Sylvers – a soulful band made up of youngsters from the Los Angeles scene, but who had a lot more going on than some of the other kiddie-soul bands of the early 70s! The group's a sextet at this point, with four male voices and two female ones – coming across as a sweet blend of tenor and soprano harmonies, in a similar mode to the Five Stairsteps – but maybe with a deeper, grittier vibe overall! The record has a solid sound and a funky groove that gives you a hint at what stars the kids would grow up to be – as not only The Sylvers would go on to crack the charts big, but members Leon and Foster would do some pretty great soul work on their own. Jerry Peters did arrangements on the best cuts – with that slightly messed-up groove that he brought to his best 70s work. The record includes the great funky sample cut "Fool's Paradise", which has a great intro that steps along with a fierce bongo sample! Also includes some nice mellower soul material – like "Wish That I Could Talk to You", "I Know Myself", and "Chaos". All that, and Jerry Butler production too! LP, Vinyl record album

Trio Mocoto first rose to fame as the funky band behind Jorge Ben on his early 70s classics – the combo that gave him such a soulful sound – and here on their own, they sound pretty darn great – with a style that follows the same evolution as Jorge's own sound at the time! The core elements are still a mix of funk, samba, and soul – but there's also a slightly warmer sound to the production – one that really ties the whole thing together, and maybe gives the group even more force than before! Sweet and jazzy pop from early 70s Brazil – a great little album that we'd rank with our favorites by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo! Arthur Verocai isn't nearly as well-known as those two, but he works in a similar territory – taking jazz, large arrangements, and nice touches of electric funk – and working them into a groove that has the soaring and ambitious feel of the best post-Tropicalia work of 70s Brazil! The set features arrangements from Jose Briamonte, production from Heraldo Do Monte, and titles that include a rootsy take on "A Felicidade", plus the nutty instrumental "Toc", and the original tracks "So", "Ma", "Vai", "Ui", "Indice", "Hein", and "Mae". Fantastic sounds from the glory days of the Burkina Faso scene – a time when the country's place at the crossroads of West Africa was helping to create some really amazing music! There's no set style here that defines the groove – as some tracks seem to flow from Nigerian funk, while others have echoes of Mali, and still others might show an influence from the North African changes of the period – but all with an ear towards the kinds of sounds that might burst out from the landlocked nation, and try to catch fire on the wider global market of the time. As you might guess from the Mr Bongo presentation of the music, there's a fair bit of funk in the mix – some heavy basslines or drums on about half of the tunes, mixed with lighter local instrumentation on some of the others – criss-crossing throughout in a really great way! (Recent UK pressing on Mr Bongo.)

DorisDid You Give The World Some Love Today Baby ... LP
EMI (Sweden), 1970. Sealed ... $14.99
One of the grooviest albums ever recorded – a set that's funky, offbeat, and has way more to offer than most American album of the time! Swedish singer Doris really knocked it out of the park with this one – working with arranger Bert Egerbladh, who gives the set some nicely unusual grooves, often augmented by his own work on organ! The album is famous amongst the break crowd for the track "You Never Come Closer", which has a deep groove and weird fuzzy piano that's been sampled by more than a few folks over the years – but over and above that, the record's an excellent batch of off-beat pop tunes – and it feels like some of the nuttier work that came out on Capitol Records during the late 70s, as evidenced by the Blue Juice/Blue Breaks love of the record in the past decade or two. Tracks include "Did You Give The World Some Love Today Baby", "I'm Pushing You Out", "Beatmaker", "Don't", "Waiting At The Station", "Bath", "You Never Come Closer", and "I Wish I Knew". ✨✧ Peter KingMiliki Sound ... LP
Orbitone (UK), 1975. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A great groove from the legendary Peter King – an album served up in a wicked mix of jazz and roots – a perfect summation of his Miliki Sound of the 70s! The core rhythms are very focused – rooted in high life, but with a more skittish energy overall – and they're topped by Peter's own great work on tenor sax, flute, and piano – plus guest performances by Dudu Pukwana on alto and Eddie Tantan on trumpet! The mode shows King's unique trans-hemisphere journey in the 70s – his frequent time with other expatriates in England, and his sense of a place for a wider Afro groove on the European scene. Yet despite this all, the whole thing is served up without any easy cliches or attempts to go commercial – just a core sound that's mighty nice all the way through. Titles include "Iya La Jole", "Jo Jolo", "Boleya Koya", "Gyinmi Komo", and "Elelzy". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent reissue on Mr Bongo.)

✨✧ Mental AbstratoUzoma ... LP
SDB Discos, 2019. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really great work from a Brazilian combo that somehow manages to work in a mode that's completely rootsy, but also completely contemporary too! The music here mixes together heavy percussion, bits of jazz, and just the right touches on keyboards, beats, and samples – so that the organic and electric elements are perfectly balanced – at a level that's wonderfully illuminating, and which shifts nicely from track to track on the album – partly because of some of the guests who appear throughout. Titles include "Khamisi", "O Mar", "Mr Cal", "For You", "James Bongo", "Blue Skies", "Afroonirico", "Suco De Acerola", "Samambaia Rainha", and "Down". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousSuper Funk Vol 2 – Rare Funk From Deep In The Crates ... LP
BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Rare funk from deep in the crates – and deep in the vaults, too – given that some of the tracks are issued here for the first time ever! The collection's a stunner from the folks at Ace Records – a label who've already been digging through the catalogs of rare soul labels for years, and really know their way around the archives enough to uncover some rare funk too – the kind of overlooked gems that sound even better here in the 21st Century – because their rhythms and instrumentation were often years ahead of their time! The mix of artists is great, too – and includes some famous funk legends, and others you wouldn't expect on such a set – more proof of the genius approach used in the series. Tracks include "Brand New Girl" by Billy Garner, "Jelly Roll" by Granby Street Development, "Put It Where You Want It" by Pee Wee Crayton, "What You See Is What You Get" by Brenda George, "Soul Strokes" by Sidney Pinchback & the Schiller Street Gang, "Jaws" from Johnny Otis, "Freddy Wilson's "Promised Land", "Pass It On" by Pieces Of Peace, "I Need Money" by Ruth Davis, "Warm The Pot ('Til It's Good And Hot)" by Willard Burton & the Pacifiers, "Mr Big H" by Joe Houston, and "Funky Bongo" by Preston Epps.
