Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Mr Bongo really goes back to its roots here – and returns to the kind of rare global gems that first made us fall in love with the label in the first place! Over 20 years ago, Mr Bongo were one of the key global forces in opening up people's ears to the sounds of funk and soul from around the globe – digging up rare nuggets from out of the way places that might have echoed American styles, but turned them on their ear – or the kinds of cuts that were completely unique, but which could stand next to the kind of funky 45s that were being sampled for hip hop! This collection brings together some of the best cuts that continue that legacy – some rare singles, some obscure European tracks, and lots of others you never would have discovered otherwise – with titles that include "Deixa A Tristeza", "Piranha" by Alipio Martins, "Seara De Oxala" by Barbosa, "Mathar" by Dave Pike Set, "Freak" by Tappa Zukie, "Mama Hot Daddy Cool" by Big Youth, "Fish & Funjee" by Lantei Lamptey, "Karam Bani" by Buari, "Handsome Boy (parts 1 & 2)" by The Rwenzoris, "He's Forever" by King James Version, "Chanson D'Un Jour D'Hiver" by Cortez, and "Can't Live Without You" by Connie Laverne. Mr Bongo (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A record club that's way way cooler than the Columbia House version of the 70s – as the Mr Bongo take on the format features only rare funk tracks from around the world! Most of these tunes here are from vintage Brazilian and African sources – but the tunes still have plenty of elements that you'd know from American soul of the 70s – funky drums, basslines, sweet keyboards, and soulful vocals – served up alongside less familiar elements that really keep things interesting, and which makes for a hell of a compilation overall! Most of these tracks were previously issued on very limited Mr Bongo 45s – brought together here with a set list that includes "Jungle Music" by Kelenkye Band, "Mas Que Nada" by Luiz Henrique, "Ebony Game" by Guy Chevas, "Awake O Zion" by Elbertina Twinkie Clark, "Family Planning" by Kiru Stars, "Nao Adianta" by Leny Andrade, "Samba Maneiro" by Rosa Maria, "Obrigado Corcovado" by Tom & Dito, "Capoeira" by Joao Diaz, "Harari" by The Beaters, "Merry Go Round" by The Equatics, and "Ecology" by Anubis. Maybe the coolest entry so far in this excellent series – and proof that the Mr Bongo label has gone much farther in recent years than it ever did in the past! Years back, Bongo was known as a hotbed of Latin and Brazilian music – but the sounds here are also rare funk and soul, other global modes, and even a few contemporary touches too – all served up with the care and class that we used to love from a Mr Bongo DJ night in London – way back when we used to make it to events like that! There's no need to know anything about the music in advance – just let the record work its magic, as it takes you through cuts that include "Paradise Island" by Azwon, "Eyes Growing Wider" by Carnival, "Throwing Stones (Kenny Dope mix)" by James Reese & The Progressions, "Amanha O Tempo Muda" by Lincoln, "Mama Matotoya" by Vikings, "Sputla" by Teaspoon Ndelu, "Al Elnim" by Hamlet Minassian, "Selfportait" by Matty, "Extralude (Wyndham Earl's more than an interlude rmx)" by Wax Machine, "Lotus 72 D" by Ze Roberto, "Sonho Lindo" by Don Ricardo, "The Peruvian" by DJ Format & The Simonsound, and "Don't Stop This Train" by Cindy & The Playmates. Two of the greatest songs ever from the Incredible Bongo Band – brought together here in a special limited edition picture sleeve! "Bongo Rock" is a killer – a tune with a massive break that's been sampled countless times, and which has this amazing percussion part in the middle, mixed with lots of very cool horn effects! "Apache" is maybe even more classic – one of THE cuts that gave birth to hip hop – with a break you'll recognize instantly, and this mad groove that's plenty great on its own! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Sonafric/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A beautiful record from Akofa Akoussah – a singer from Togo who's equally gifted in funky and sweeter soul styles! Half the record is full-on funk, and we'd swear that Lafayette Afro Rock Band must have had a hand in some of the instrumentation (possible, as it was recorded in Paris) – as there's reed lines and trippy electric elements that feel like they're very much their work – especially the way they could make things wig out around the edges of the mix! And if they're not on the record, the sound is very similar on the funky numbers – which then leaves the sweeter tracks to bring in a bit more of an acoustic balance, and really foreground Akofa's amazing voice. Titles include "Tango", "La Lem", "Mitso Aseye", "Dandou Kodjo", "G Blem Di", and "Kimumbu". CD

A really well-crafted set of funk from the legendary Gyedu-Blay Ambolley – maybe best known for his material in the mid 70s, but sounding equally wonderful here on an album from the start of the 80s! The sound is sharper and more sophisticated than before – recorded in London, with a great ear for the many possibilities of basslines, keyboard parts, and rhythms – used in modes that embrace a wider range of soul styles, but which also don't sound anything at all like mainstream R&B! A few tracks feature more familiar highlife rhythms, but most are in this new breed laid down by Ambolley – on titles that include "Walking Down The Street", "Frafranta", "Adwoa", "Cut Your Coat", "Cause I Love You", and a great funky remake of "Simigwa" – maybe worth the price of the album alone, thanks to percussion that almost rivals the Incredible Bongo Band. An amazing bit of Brazilian funk – and the best album ever by this exciting soulful duo! The record's their first, and it's got a crackling intensity that you don't always find on their other albums – a groove that mixes hard samba with bass-heavy funk, with a sound that makes them one of the most important forces of the Samba Soul generation! There's lots here to love if you like the heavy grooves of Jorge Ben or Tim Maia – but the duo also have a really great approach of their own – especially in the way they'll trade voices back and forth, over grooves that also have plenty of back/forth action too! The record includes the amazing heavy piano/percussion jammer "Hipnose", plus the great cuts "Voce Abusou", "Kabaluere", "Se Quiser Valer", "Deus O Salve", "Nord West", and "Dalena". An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. The whole thing's wonderful – one of the most soulful Brazilian records of the 70s – and titles include the great cuts "Tarde", "Tamborim Cuica Ganza Berimbau", "Falcon Love Call", and "Aguia Nao Come Mosca". Trio/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
One of the greatest jazz vocal albums of all time – and one of the first true moments of genius from a young Dee Dee Bridgewater! The album's a Japanese only release (proof that they're always hipper to our jazz artists than we are!) – and it features Dee Dee singing material that's quite different than her later R&B-inflected sides from the late 70s – very soaring and spiritual work, delivered in a way that set a whole new standard for jazz at the time! Backing is by a small combo with brothers Ron and Cecil Bridgewater, plus Roland Hanna on acoustic and electric piano, George Mraz on bass, and Motohiko Hino on drums and percussion – but the star of the set is always Dee Dee, who sparkles beautifully on the album's classic versions of "Afro Blue" and "Little B's Poem" – both of which have been redone by many other singers over the years. One of the few albums ever cut by the team of Octavio Burnier and Claudio Cartier – a mid 70s Brazilian duo with a sweet and soulful finish! Both Burnier and Cartier play guitar – but not in a spare, Baden Powell-like way. Instead, they've got a sound that's very full – touched with much of the Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s, and given a smooth electric finish that makes for some very nice grooves. The guitar work is excellent – jamming away on tracks that also sport keyboards, electric bass, and vocals by a variety of singers – including Roberto Quartin, Alberto Arantes, Sonia Burnier, and Jaime Luiz. ✨✧ Akira IshikawaBack To Rhythm ... CD
Sony/Mr Bongo (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Heavy funk from a hip Japanese combo – one that features lots of drums and percussion from leader Akira Ishikawa, plus plenty of guitar, keyboards, and hard-riffing horns! Akira's taking most of his cues here from American funk of the early 70s – work by Incredible Bongo Band, BT Express, and others – but he often serves up the music with a fair bit of conga work at the front of the arrangements, in a way that takes familiar tunes and gives them a much rootsier, earthier kind of groove! The approach is unique, but totally great – and the album's a funk album unlike anything else we can think of – quite unusual even for the experimental Japanese scene of the time. Titles include "Bongo Rock", "Pick Up The Pieces", "Do It Til You're Satisfied", "I've Got To Use My Imagination", "Let's Start", "Love Is The Answer", and "Boogie On Reggae Woman". CD

An amazing bit of soul – and one of the rarest funk records of the 70s! This masterpiece was recorded by The Jackson Sisters, a semi-gospelly soul group that has a sound that's a bit like The Voices of East Harlem, but that's a lot harder, and that has a deeper soul sound overall! At times, the group is funky – as on their incredible track "I Believe In Miracles", a rare groove classic if there ever was one, and one of the most in-demand tracks we've ever stocked. At other times, the girls have a mellower soul sound, with great raw harmonies that remind us of the Volt work by The Emotions, but with much rougher instrumental backing. This album's the only one they ever cut – and it's just about impossible to find in the original pressing (and in fact, we've never seen a copy!) A fantastic introduction to one of our favorite Brazilian artists of all time – the lovely Joyce – a hell of a singer, songwriter, and guitar player – and an artist who almost works with a jazzy vibe to her music too! It's impossible to describe the genius of Joyce in just a few words – as she's got this special blend of her voice and acoustic guitar, moving between lyrics and wordless vocal inflections – in ways that sound completely sublime, whether in a spare setting or with larger backings – both of which you'll hear in this set. The package is heavy on cuts from her landmark recordings for EMI/Odeon – and titles include "Joya", "Historia Do Samba", "Caqui", "Aldeia De Ogum", "Passarinho", "Feminina", "Fa Da Bahia", "Baracumbara", "Docura Forte/Agua E Luz", "Banana", and "Clareana". RCA/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
A fantastic bit of funky fusion from Brazil – one of the most hard-hitting albums we've ever heard from keyboardist Cesar Mariano! Mariano had a long legacy in music that included great arrangements for Elis Regina – but this set is completely different than most of his other work – almost in a CTI Records sort of vein, as if Mariano were trying to follow the mode of his contemporary Deodato – but with a stronger current of Brazilian jazz, especially all of the complexity that was coming into that music at the time. Most of the instrumentation is electric – with a great mix of guitars, bass, and keyboards – but there's also nice use of acoustic bass and piano – for a groove that's both funky, but also touched with strong elements of Brazilian jazz. Titles include the cool funky track "Metropole", the break cut "Fabrica", and the mellow groover "Imigrantes" – as well as the tunes "Metro", "Litoral", and "Futebol De Bar". LP, Vinyl record album

A really unusual album from the South African scene of the 80s – served up by a blind quartet who partly echo the styles of other vocal ensembles of the period, but done with a mish-mash of styles that really keeps the whole thing interesting! The album's maybe best-remembered for a few clubby groovers that bring the harmonies together with some post-disco boogie modes – and those cuts dominate the record, balanced by a few mellower ballads and more spiritual numbers. NovalimaAfro ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 2005. Used ... $2.99
A modern take on the older Afro-Peruvian groove – one that still features the highly percussive and deeply soulful styles of the original, yet which also steps out with some warmer keyboards and a slightly more modern feel overall! Novalima are steeped in the traditions of those who inspired them – Peruvian legends who include Nicomedes, Lucha Reyes, and Lucila Campos – all of whom are sampled on the record. The group's also clearly trying to reach out with a broader style too – a slightly post-colonial criss-crossing of modes that's also evident in fact that the album was recorded in London, Barcelona, and Hong Kong as well as their Lima home turf – yet they also still retain an earthy feel throughout, and the record's a surprisingly non-dancefloor oriented set, especially given its affiliation to the Mr Bongo label. Titles include "Malato", "Ay Bembe", "Toromata", "Cardo", "Alcajazz", "Mayoral", "Zamba Lando", and "Mandinga". CD

A wonderfully hard-to-categorize album from the start of the 80s – a Mexican record that mixes folkloric roots with electronic instrumentation – but all in a way that sounds much more ancient than you'd expect for the time! The fusion of modes here is wonderful – almost at a level that reminds us of some of the Graeme Revell experiments of the mid 80s, or some of the more organic electronics from Japan – as the whole thing feels a lot more acoustic than electric, with a wonderful blend of woody sounds, percussion, and other great elements. A killer set of jazz rock from early 70s Japan – and a set that's way different than Anglo albums of this nature! There's definitely a mix of horns, jazzy soloing, and electrified elements on guitar, bass, and keyboards – but the themes here are often strongly Japanese, and also feature work on a variety of traditional instruments – including koto and shakuhachi, all served up with a very cool sound throughout the set! Players are a who's who of some of the more creative Japanese jazz musicians of the time – a lineup that includes Hozan Yamamoto, Takeshi Inomata, Tadao sawai, Sadanori Nakamure, Tatsuro Takimoto, and Kazue Sawai – and the record's got a number of elements that make it resonate with some of Hozan's coolest work from the period. A few tracks get nice and funky, others are laidback and spiritual – and titles include "Soran Bushi", "Kuroda Bushi", "Hanagasa Odori", "Kiso Bushi", "Hokkai Bon Uta", "Iso Bushi", "Hietsuki Bushi", "Sansa Shigure", and "Sado Okesa". Gallo/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A fantastic set from 70s South Africa – and a record that maybe has a lot more of an American funk vibe than you'd expect! The style is nice and lean, and is often in a mode that echoes some of the cooler underground disco of the late 70s on the east coast – almost as if these cuts could have come from one of the P&P family of labels, instead of South Africa's big Gallo imprint – save for some especially nice moments that almost recall the early 70s electric funk of Hugh Masekela! All tunes are nice and long, all instrumentals – and the "disco specials" are original tunes that mix clubby rhythms with a variety of different sounds and styles – really cool, very fresh, and not even in the same territory as some of the West African/Paris hybrids of the time. Titles include the ten minute classic "Disco Stomp" – plus "We Did It", "Barney's Moaning", and "GG Is Talking". CD

Mr Bongo (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.98
A really amazing step forward for Matthew Tavares and Leland Whitty – two musicians best known as founders of BADBADNOTGOOD – but emerging here in an even more mature blend of jazz and larger instrumental ideas! The record mixes core solo voices with some larger touches here and there – shifting effortlessly between focus and scape, with the subtle majesty of similar Brazilian efforts from the 70s – lofty, but never too full of itself – sophisticated, but very down to earth! Tavares plays guitar and piano, Whitty handles saxes and flute – alongside bass, drums, and some nice larger strings, used very lightly, and in all the right ways. RGE/Mr Bongo (UK), 1964. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A set that's maybe one of the greatest bossa jazz albums of all time – and a fantastic homegrown Brazilian effort that's quite different from the more commercial American bossa albums of the 60s! Tenorio Jr isn't just a hell of a pianist, he's a great writer and arranger too – one who's got an amazing ear for color and tone, balanced out with some completely sublime grooves – not smooth coffee shop bossa nova, but instead the harder sort of rhythms that were cooked up by the best combos in Brazil! The tunes are as warm and soulful as they are tight and angular – a perfect summation of the bossa jazz idiom at its truest expression – and the writing is fantastic throughout, with original songs that really provide a fresh change from some of the too-played hits of the generation. Instrumentation includes trombone from Raul De Souza, drums from Milton Banana, tenor from Meirelles, and alto sax from Paulo Moura – on titles that include the classic groover "Nebulosa", plus the tracks "Clouds", "Nectar", "Embalo", and "Estou Nessa Agora". A delight through and through – and one we never tire of! CD

One of the most important early albums by Marcos Valle – a set of instrumental tracks recorded with lots of acoustic guitar! Even though Valle was well known as a singer and composer of bossa nova tunes, the set instead focuses on his instrumental work – recording his guitar ala Jobim or Bonfa at the time – with some larger arrangements from Deodato, who really brings a great feel to the set! The sound is tremendous – as sweeping strings soar over tight rhythms from drummer Wilson Das Neves – and Valle and Deodato set some magical moods on tunes that include "Deus Brasileiro", "Vamos Pranchar", "Tanto Andei", "Seu Encanto", "Batucada Surgiu", "Dorme Profundo", and "Os Grilos" – the first ever recording of "Crickets Sing For Anamaria"! Victor/Mr Bongo (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $20.99 21.98
One of the coolest albums ever cut by Japanese wood flute player Hozan Yamamoto – a set that has him working with very groovy backings from the Sharps & Flats ensemble – who almost give the whole thing an MPS label blending of funky jazz and world music sounds! The approach is wonderful – a bit more upbeat and swinging than some of Yamamoto's other records, as Nobuo Hara leads the larger group with a totally cool sound – which makes the flute lines a sweet exotic touch over straightforward, soul-drenched, big band jazz! We might even link the sound to some of Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess/Cadet – although with flute, instead of harp – and titles include "Komoro Mago-Uta", "Soma Bon-Uta", "Kokirio Bushi", "Sado Okesa", "Tairyo Utaikomi", and "Kuroda-Bushi". Continental/Mr Bongo (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
A record with "samba" in the title, but a set that hardly sounds like samba at all – given that the record is one of the groundbreaking 70s albums from the legendary Tom Ze! Ze first rose to fame as an experimentalist in the Tropicalia scene – but here, he's years past that movement, yet still one of its most creative proponents – working in a mode that takes older Brazilian rhythms and infuses them with all the new sounds, styles, and sense of poetry that Tom was bringing to his music – often quite playful, but at a level that's quite moving as well. The whole thing's got the subtle "beyond language" power of some of the best by Caetano Veloso – even though Tom Ze is completely his own man throughout. The set features arrangements from Jose Briamonte, production from Heraldo Do Monte, and titles that include a rootsy take on "A Felicidade", plus the nutty instrumental "Toc", and the original tracks "So", "Ma", "Vai", "Ui", "Indice", "Hein", and "Mae". For the set, the Bongo crew enlisted the aid of talents that include Faze Action, Ballistic Brothers, Fila Brazilian, and Boxsaga – all to remix 11 Batucada tracks performed by the group Arakatuba. It's no secret that Brazilians love their football and are pretty darn good at it – but it's a lesser-known fact that they also associate a lot of music with the game! This excellent set is a wonderful document of the link between music and football in Brazil – and features some classic songs that were either recorded by or for footballers, or which in time have come to be associated with the game. As you can imagine from the ferocity of the game, most of the tunes are lively, uptempo, and very groove oriented – which makes the set way more than just a package of sports songs, and an essential set of Brazilian grooves! Titles include "Nao Adianta" by Trio Mocoto, "Socrates (Fila Brasilia mix)" by Arakatuba, "Meio De Campo" by Elis Regina, "Camisa 10 Da Gavea" by Jorge Ben, "Mas Que Nada" by Tamba Trio, "O Ronco Da Cuica" by Joao Bosco, "Samba Rubro-Negro" by Joao Nogueira, "Filo Maravilha" by Marijo, "Hino Da Bahia" by Caetano Veloso, "O Futebol" by Chico Buarque, "O Rei Pele" by Jackson Do Pandeiro, "Perdao Nao Tem" by Elis Regina & Pele, "Futebol Do Bar" by Caesar Camargo Mariano, "Gol Anulado" by Joao Bosco, and "Ponta De Lanca Africano" by Jorge Ben. 22 tracks in all. VariousOriginal Sound Of Burkina Faso (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... About May 7, 2021
Fantastic sounds from the glory days of the Burkina Faso scene – a time when the country's place at the crossroads of West Africa was helping to create some really amazing music! There's no set style here that defines the groove – as some tracks seem to flow from Nigerian funk, while others have echoes of Mali, and still others might show an influence from the North African changes of the period – but all with an ear towards the kinds of sounds that might burst out from the landlocked nation, and try to catch fire on the wider global market of the time. As you might guess from the Mr Bongo presentation of the music, there's a fair bit of funk in the mix – some heavy basslines or drums on about half of the tunes, mixed with lighter local instrumentation on some of the others – criss-crossing throughout in a really great way! Titles include "Boy Cuinsinier" by Pierre Sandouidi, "Jeunesse Willia" by Cisse Abdoulaye, "Kombisse" by Bozambo, "A Son Magni" by Cisse Abdoulaye and Super Volta, "M'Ba Lale" by Nabolle John Oumar, "Whisky Et Coca Cola" by Amadou Balake, "De Nwolo" by Coulibaly Tidiane and Dafra Star, "Djanfa Magni" by Youssouf Diarra Dit El Grand Ballake, and "Pop Konde" by Mangue Konde Et L'Orchestre Les 5 Consuls. A holy grail of 70s African Funk – and not just for the unusual look of the cover! The set's a really unique one – almost rootsier than most of the better-known Ghanian grooves of the time, but funkier too – with a brilliant blend of raw percussion, quirky basslines, and some smoking horn parts that are a lot more American soul and funk than the usual 70s African groove! An amazing bit of Brazilian funk – and the best album ever by this exciting soulful duo! A rare one from Ghanaian legend Gyedu Blay Ambolley – fully in control of a far-reaching funky trip with his Zantoda Mark III group! Control carries on with the most treasured aspects of Ambolley's mid 70s work – the raw percussion, punchy horns and charismatic vocals – but it's tripped out in really cool ways with the addition of some spacey keys and synth. There's a lot to be said for how elegantly the funky Ghana soul instrumentation and spiritual lyricism blend with bubbling spacey touches, making this his most unique effort in that respect, but it's still funk and soul to the core. One of the richest, most expressive albums ever from the great Gal Costa – a set from her immediate post-Tropicalia years, and one that shows that she's got a lot more to offer than just a wild sense of experimentation! Gilberto Gil is the musical director here – with help from Rogerio Duprat and Arthur Verocai – and the album's got the lofty feel you'd expect from all three talents – a rich blend of all the modern developments in Brazilian music that had taken place in the 60s, but infused with a newly rootsy sense as well – one that takes the whole thing back to a personal, expressive territory that's really wonderful. The funky Rob way is a massive one at that – a new path into Afro Funk modes for the 70s, with a groove that's made this set a collectors classic for decades! The group is tighter than most, yet more skittish too – percussion rattling alongside basslines that have these echoey qualities that go deep and dark, but with more of a soul-based style than some of the psych-influence work from Zimbabwe and other scenes of the time! Spare electronic bits come into play with the keyboards, guitar, drums, and bass – but at a level that's never overdone – just enough to keep things slightly offbeat and unsettling, while Rob himself grooves away in the lead! It's almost impossible to describe in words what makes this set so unique – but one drop of the needle will have you hooked for life – thanks to cuts that include "Funky Rob Way", "Forgive Us All", "Boogie On", "Just One More Time", "More", and "Your Kiss Stole Me Away". Most of the tunes on the set are produced by Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick, of Incognito – and they go for a spacious sound that's a strong extension of Terry's classic work for Cadet – rough vocals and acoustic guitar mixed with warmer keyboards, tight rhythms, and touches of strings. The album also features guest appearances by Paul Weller, Marc Mac of 4 Hero, and a number of other important London forces – and tracks include "Brother To Brother", "Imagine A Nation", "Monuments Of Mars", "Darker Than A Shadow", "Running Around", and "Speak Your Piece". LP features 6 tracks from the CD. LP, Vinyl record album

Continental/Mr Bongo (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Wickedly cool work from this overlooked Brazilian singer – a record that's got a strong sense of soul in the grooves, and a great sense of imagination in the choice of songs! Celia sings early work by Joyce, Lo Borges, Nelson Angelo, and others – with these shifting arrangements from the likes of Arthur Verocai, Rogerio Duprant, and Jose Briamonte – all in a mish-mash of modes that sometimes echoes the funky styles on EMI/Odeon of the period, sometimes even hits at Tropicalia touches – especially when guitarist Elody is given full run in the music to do his thing! Titles include "Abrace Paul McCartney", "Fotograma", "Adeus Batucada", "To Be", "David", "Durango Kid", "Zozoio Como E Que E", and "Lennon McCartney". CD

✨✧ Asha PuthliAsha Puthli (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
CBS/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic bit of female funk from the 70s – and a set that was recorded in Germany by a very exotic singer! The album is Asha Puthli's first – and includes some unusual interpretations of work by JJ Cale, John Lennon, Bill Withers, and George Harrison – plus a great tune of her own – set to these cool backings that have lots of spacey electric modes blended with smoother funk passages – kind of a precursor to later Munich disco modes, but with a slower, slinkier feel. Asha's voice is very weird – a bit in the "love to love you baby" mode, and with a range of sounds that moves up and down the scale almost as much as Minnie Riperton. The record's got a nice mix of jazzy arrangements, and Asha's unique high-pitched vocals work great on tracks like "Lies", "Right Down Here", "I Dig Love", "Truth", "I Am A Song", "Let Me In Your Life", and "This Is Your Life". ✨✧ Trio MocotoTrio Mocoto (1977) ... LP
Arlequim/Mr Bongo (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Trio Mocoto first rose to fame as the funky band behind Jorge Ben on his early 70s classics – the combo that gave him such a soulful sound – and here on their own, they sound pretty darn great – with a style that follows the same evolution as Jorge's own sound at the time! The core elements are still a mix of funk, samba, and soul – but there's also a slightly warmer sound to the production – one that really ties the whole thing together, and maybe gives the group even more force than before! Riffing guitars snap alongside the lively percussion – and the trio trade voices in a mighty nice way – sometimes with a bit of backup from other singers too. Titles include "Nao Adianta", "Toda Tarde", "Rosa", "Onde Anda Voce", "O Meu Violao", and "Xuxu Melao". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hozan Yamamoto & Sharps & FlatsBeautiful Bamboo Flute ... CD
Victor/Mr Bongo (UK), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ VariousPsychedelic Pernambuco ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
70s psychedelia from the northeastern state of Pernambuco, Brazil – incredible stuff that combines rawly percussive tropical sounds with a world of psychedelic creativity and possibilities – one of the best compilations ever put together by Mr Bongo! Lula Cortes was a pivotal figure in the scene and he's pretty well represented here, including his influential recordings with Ze Remalho. Even more exciting, though, is the stuff we've never been fortunate enough to hear before now – and there's a pretty good deal of it! The fusion of global psych and folk sounds into a distinctly Brazilian sound is nothing short of amazing – regional and traditional percussion underneath sitars, lutes, keyboards and more. It features songs by the great Lula Cortes & Ze Ramalho, Geraldo Azevedo & Alceu Valenca, Marconi Notaro, Flaviola E O Bando Do Sol and The Gentleman. 19 tracks in all: "Sorriso Delvagem" by The Gentlemen, "O Tempo" and "Desespero" by Flaviola E O Bando Do Sol, "Antropologica", "Maracatu" and "Fidelidade" by Marconi Notaro, "Mister Misterio", "Virgem Virginia" and more by Geraldo Azevedo & Alceu Valenca, "Bailado Das Muscarias" and "Maracas De Fogo" by Lula Cortes & Ze Ramalho, "Noite Preta" by Lula Cortes and more. ✨✧ Ebo TaylorEbo Tayor & The Pelikans ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A vintage set from the great Ebo Talyor – an artist who's been recording new music in recent years, but who sounds even better here on one of his classics! Ebo's got a fair bit of jazz mixed in with his sound – a layering of flute, trombone, tenor, guitar, and keyboard parts with a strong sense of solo – a bit like South African jazz of the period, especially in the way the instruments really open up in the midtempo grooves! Rhythms are laidback, but still nicely present – not as speedy as Afro-Funk, but not much slower either – and there's also room for plenty of lyrics on the tracks, too – although it's the instrumental solos we think we like the best. Titles include "Reality", "If You Care", "Come Along", "Egya Edu", "Enye Wo Nyame Nko", and "Gyae Su Na Nkomo". LP, Vinyl record album

A hot new soul singer from Brazil – the lovely Paula Lima, who sings in a style that's part underground soul, part Brazilian funk, and all-sweet all the way! The album's a stunning debut – strongly produced, in a style that steps off from territory covered by Ed Motta in some of his late 90s albums – clearly modern R&B, but done with some strongly jazzy touches that keep things real. Titles include "Perdao Talvez", "Tive Razao", "Sai Daqui Tristeza", "Quero Ver Voce No Baile", and "A Paz Dancando Na Venida". CD

✨✧ Os CanibaisOs Canibais ... CD
Rozenblit/Mr Bongo (UK), 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
A weird and wild little record from Os Canibais – at first glance, a familiar rockish set from late 60s Brazil – but upon deeper listening, a nicely tripped-out album in all the right places! Os Canibais have a touch of the Jovem Guarda groove – that Brazilian style of copping bits of Anglo rock from up north – but like some of the hippest South American acts at the time, they find ways of making the familiar sound very odd – weird little twists and turns on guitar, organ, and even production – already great on their covers of familiar tunes – but even wilder on their own numbers, which definitely have a psych quality right away – especially on the organ, which is really moody and dark! Titles include "Nosso Romance", "Se Voce Quer", "A Praca", "Ao Meu Amor", "Lindo Sonho", and "O Prego". CD

✨✧ Ebo Taylor Jr & Wuta WazutuGotta Take It Cool ... CD
Phonogram/Mr Bongo (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The son of the legendary Ebo Taylor serves up a great record of his own – a sweet blend of funky highlife and other 70s-styled grooves – set to short cuts with a nicely compact vibe, and a cool style of production that almost owes a bit to the style of Jamaican music! There's lots of basslines that move carefully along the bottom – never too dubby, but definitely giving the work a nicely stepping style – while offbeat organ, riffing guitar, and other elements move nicely through the mix alongside the very raw vocals of the younger Ebo! At times, we'd almost call the set a Ghanian take on the harder sound of Kingston in the early 70s – and titles include "Mondo Soul Funky", "Swinging Soul For Love", "You've Got Yours Greedy Man", "Every Woman Needs A Helper", "Gotta Take It Cool", "Systems To Love", and "Begging On Knees". ✨✧ Jack Bongo BurgerEnd On Bongos (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Hi Fi/Modern Harmonic, 1957. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A sweet set from that great record moment when Latin styles were coming into play with the hipper sounds of the bachelor pad world! Jack "Bongo" Burger was a west coast percussionist with a very similar style to Jack "Mr Bongo" Costanzo – and in fact, since they're both named Jack, and have a bongo middle name, we always wonder whether or not they're the same person! Whatever the case, this album's a tasty batch of bongo-heavy tracks – with a style that's similar to some of Costanzo's work on Liberty, although perhaps with slightly less of a Latin bent. The group includes Buddy Collette on flute and sax, plus piano, trumpet, electric bass, and some nice odd percussion. Kind of like a combo of some of Collette's jazz work, and the exotic stuff that was also appearing on the Hi Fi label. Tracks include "Jordu", "China Nights Mambo", "Negre Setin", "Chiu Chiu", and "Mambo Burger". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic! And every bit as wonderful as volume one. Put together by the guys at Mr. Bongo, this volume 2 features more rare Brazilian gems from the Brazilian EMI/Odeon catalog. A few of these were on the Lexington comps Primitivo and Libero Nos a few years ago, but those came out in Japan, and it's not likely you ever got them in the first place. Tracks on this one include "Freio Aerodinamico" by Os Tres Morais, "Transamazonica" by Antonio Adolfo, "Tudo Que Voce Podia Ser" by Quarteto Em Cy, "Jungle" by Som Tres, "Procissao" by Milton Banana, and "Reflexos" by Quinteto Villa Lobos & Luiz Eca.
