✨✧ MoodDoom (blue & black splatter vinyl pressing) ... LP
Blunt/Space Invadaz, 1997. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A seminal set from the Ohio underground – a record that features top-shelf production not just from the group's Jahson, but also from the young Hi-Tek too – all with a quality that really links the sophisticated sound of the album to the growing world of the Rawkus scene! A further link is featured in three key appearances from Talib Kweli on the record – but even without his presence, the group already have something here that can go head to head with the best of New York – laidback production that's got all sorts of interesting stuff going on, but without hitting you over the head – and lyrics that manage to sound mystical, yet without being preachy either. An overlooked classic – with titles that include "He is DJ Hi-Tek", "Sacred", "Peace Infinity", "Esoteric Manuscript", "Karma", "The Vision", "Tunnel Bound", "Another Day", "Nuclear Hip HOp", "Peddlers Of Doom", "Secrets Of The Sand", and "Illuminated Sunlight". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mood Jga JgaMood Jga Jga (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Warner/Big Pink (South Korea), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A Canadian group with roots that go back to The Guess Who – but who come across here with a sound that's very much their own – well-produced, and with some soulful undercurrents that come as a nice surprise for anyone who might have been expecting a more offbeat approach from their name! The sound is tight, but in ways that are different from more mainstream AOR work from the US at the time – using jazzy elements in the instrumentation, but mixed with a more straightforward groove – echoing some roots, but never rootsy at all, given the sharper production from Phil Ramone. Titles include "Gimme My Money", "River Bank", "Daybreak", "Kill The Hangman", "Queen Jealousy", "Come & See Me Here My Friend", and "Gimme My Money". CD

Fabrizio Bosso/Javier GirottoSol – Latin Mood (Japanese pressing with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 2008. Used ... $6.99 19.99
A beautiful session from Italian trumpeter Fabrizo Bosso and saxophonist Javier Girotto – one that's filled with all the Latin Moods promised in the title! The set steps nicely off some of Bosso's other recent work for Blue Note – with a sound that's evocative, but also pretty lively too – especially given the small combo setting for the date! Bosso's trumpet and flugelhorn come into great play with Girotto's soprano and baritone sax lines – dancing beautifully over some rhythmic backings shaded in with keyboards, piano, and electric bass. The large booklet features some poetic prose that really set the scene for each tune – and although there's a bit of vocals on the record, most numbers are instrumental. Titles include "Volver", "Matias", "Pescao Blanco", "Wide Green Eyes", "Ochenta", "El Cacerolazo", "African Friends", and "Penny". Contains two bonus tracks ; "Blues" & "Caminando". CD
(Still sealed with the obi!)

✨✧ Joe CastroMood Jazz ... LP
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good ... $9.99
One of a few albums recorded by pianist Joe Castro for Atlantic – an overlooked player with a nice light touch on the keys! The "mood jazz" in the title is very fitting, as the record's got some nice touches from track to track – like wordless chorus vocals on a few numbers, sax solos by the little known (but nicely toned) Glen Prescott, and even some light and gliding spare string touches on arrangements by Neal Hefti, who does arrangements for most of the set! The record's a real charmer, with elements that should be hokey, but which come off surprisingly well in Joe's hands – making for a set that offers a lot more than the usual piano outing of this sort from the time. Titles include "Doodlin", "Without You", "Angel Eyes", "Caravan", "You Stepped Out Of A Dream", and "JC Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Hiatus KaiyoteMood Valiant ... CD
Brainfeeder, 2021. Used ... $9.99 12.99
Hiatus Kaiyote are one of those groups that just seem to grow and grow with each new album – a strongly soulful act at their start, but one who've found a way to carve out sounds and styles that are very much their own – maybe almost making themselves a genre in the process! Things here are both cosmic and crispy, heaven-bound and earthy, in this mix of electro-acoustic energy that perfectly fits the vocals of Nai Palm, and the pulsating energy from the rest of the group – funky, but in footprints that are far from the conventional – future soul writ large, glowing with new inspiration and energy. Titles include "Get Sun", "And We Go Gentle", "Sip Into Something Soft", "All the Words We Don't Say", "Stone Or Lavender", "Sparkle Tape Break Up", and "Blood & Marrow". CD

Richard Groove HolmesI'm In The Mood For Love ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. Used ... $11.99 14.99
Quite a different album than you might expect from the title and cover – which seem to imply a set of late nite ballads! Instead, the album's got fuller arrangements and a more upbeat groove – that larger ensemble mode that some organists were using in the mid 70s – as on the later Prestige jazz/funk years, or even some of the work on the Groove Merchant label! Groove Holmes here still gets plenty of space to solo, even though the arrangements feature some additional keyboards from time to time – and Horace Ott handles the backings with a nicely soulful vibe. There's also some vocal chorus presence on the record – handled by The Breathless group, who work in a way that just echoes the instrumentation – and titles include "Morning Children", "I'm In The Mood For Love", "I've Got A Love For You", and "This Is The Me Me" – plus the laidback "Non Kulu Leku", which has a very mellow CTI/Kudu feel. Titles include "I'm In The Mood For Love", "Red Top", "Jumpin With Symphony Sid", "I'm Gone", "Funk Junction", "You're Crying", "Don't Get Scared", "This Is Always', and "Exclamation Blues". Tom KirkpatrickIn The Chet Baker Mood ... CD
Timeless (Netherlands), 1999. New Copy ... $3.99 16.99
Trumpeter Tom Kirkpatrick takes on the legacy of Chet Baker – especially late Chet Baker – but he works here with a sound that's very different overall! The format's one that Baker would often choose in later years – just a trio, with Andrea Pozza on piano and Bibi Rovere on bass – both excellent players who bring a lot of snap and crackle to the session – way more than you'd hear from one of Chet's later combos! And Kirkpatrick's phrasing is different too – sometimes as mouthy as Baker, but with a more forward approach that sparkles strongly next to Pozza's work on the keys. Titles include "Daybreak", "Gone With The Wind", "Get Out Of Town", "Alone Together", "Somewhere In The Light", "Line For Lyons", and "Bernie's Tune". CD

Sun RaFate In A Pleasant Mood/When Sun Comes Out ... CD
Saturn/Evidence, 1960/1962. Used ... $9.99
2 early Saturn albums by Sun Ra on one CD! Fate In A Pleasant Mood was recorded and released in 1960 – and is a stellar example of Ra's early genius at work. John Gilmore and Marshall Allen hold down the reed solos, and Ra's piano is out front, with plenty of space for crazy solos, especially on the cut "Space Mates". All compositions are original Ra material, and the track list includes "Ankhnaton", "Distant Stars", and "The Others In Their World". When Sun Comes Out is from a few years later – when the Arkestra had moved to New York City – and the lineup is a bit more adventurous, with Ra playing a bit of percussion and electric celeste on one track, and an overall freer approach by the rest of the group. Titles include "Dimensions In Time", "Dancing Shadows", "The Rainmaker", "We Travel The Spaceways", and "Calling Planet Earth". CD

Corky ShayneIn The Mood For A Song? ... LP
Salem, 1955. Very Good+ ... $24.99 44.99
A cool classic from mid 50s Chicago – a date that features singer Corky Shane working with backings from the Johnnie Pate Quartet! Years before Pate rose to fame as a soul and soundtrack arranger, he was a key figure on the Chicago jazz scene – and does a great job backing Shayne's vocals with jazzy sensitivity perfect for the laidback mood of the date. Other players in the group include Floyd Morris on piano, Wilbur Wynne on guitar, and Charles Walton on drums – all alongside Pate's bass – and the tunes have an easygoing swing that really suits Corky's vocals nicely. Titles include "Teardrops", "Everytime", "He's Just My Bill", "Back In Your Own Backyard", "My Love Is A Wanderer", and "I Hear A Rhapsody". LP, Vinyl record album

Two of Randy's Weston's earliest albums – both recorded in the mid 50s, and briefly (and rarely) issued on the Riverside label. The album's feature Weston playing in a very spare setting – as only 5 of the tracks feature a trio (with Art Blakey on drums and Sam Gill on bass), and another 8 feature Weston and Gill musing intimately on some Cole Porter compositions. The remaining 5 tracks feature Weston solo, on standards and original tunes – and the titles on the set include "Zulu", "Pam's Waltz", "Solemn Meditation", "Again", "Lover", "I Love You", "Night & Day", "Get Out Of Town", and "Softness". ✨✧ King PleasureMoody's Mood For Love ... CD
United Artists/Blue Note, Early 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The rarest of three albums that King Pleasure ever recorded – and pretty darn hard to find, too. The set was recorded after King's earlier sides for the Prestige and HiFi jazz labels, but it's in a very similar style, with some wonderful vocalese-ing done in Pleasure's landmark style. He's really one of the greatest jazz singers of the 20th century, and it's unfortunate that apart from the big hit fame of "Moody's Mood For Love" (recorded here once again), King never got strong recognition as a richly talented singer. A number of cuts on here are re-recordings of earlier work – like "Don't Get Scared" and "Sometimes I'm Happy" – and other tracks include "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "Old Black Magic". Plus, this CD reissue also expands the original album with a lot of bonus cuts, including some great unreleased numbers – a total of 18 tracks in all, and a treasure trove of work by King Pleasure! Wonderfully sweet work from trumpeter Charlie Shavers – a set that has Shavers blowing on ballads over larger orchestrations – in a style that's really our favorite side of his music! Charlie's horn already has a long legacy by the time of this record – a slightly mature style that sounds wonderfully as he drifts magically over string-heavy backings from Sy Oliver – in a mode that's warm and lush, yet also beautifully soulful, and manages to really personalize the familiar tunes in the set. The set includes loads of their early ABC tracks, plus a number that were cut for the tiny southern label Arlen. All the cuts have the group's beautiful mix of raw soul harmonies with uptown production – and the music has a sound that's unlike that of other groups from the same period. Loads and loads of nice ones, including "Untie Me", "Blue Shadows", "Deep Inside Me", "Trouble Maker", "Unlove You", "You Lied To Your Daddy", "Standing In", "Hey Girl Don't Bother Me", and "Do I Worry". A hell of a great sound library set from the Belgian scene of the 70s – one that features some mighty sweet arrangements from Willy Albimoor, who's best known for his work with the group Chakachas! The set isn't as funky or Latin as work by Chakachas, but definitely has a similar groovy vibe – and Willy's trademark way of mixing in bits of bossa, jazz, and other sweet styles – all in a great blend of keyboards, flute, fuzzy guitar, and some other wonderful touches! Think of the album as a less-Latin version of Chakachas, and you'll almost get things right – and of course our hat's off to Rene Costy too, for making the whole thing come together this nicely. Black & Blue (France), 1973/1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
The mood may be gray, but the sound here is plenty blue – those deep-toned lines that make trombonist Al Grey one of the most deeply-voiced players on his instrument! The set has Al in a nicely laidback setting – a relaxed, soulful approach that's almost similar to the Prestige Records Swingville sessions of the early 60s – with longish tracks that open up nicely with rhythm from Tommy Flanagan on piano, John Duke on bass, and Bobby Durham on drums. Jimmy Forrest also sits in on tenor, and cuts a nice edge, and adds maybe a bit more of a hardbop vibe. A few other tracks add in a larger group – with Hal Singer on tenor, Clarence Gatemouth Brown on guitar, and a few French players as well – in a vibe that's slightly more upbeat at times. Titles include "Face It Here It Is", "Catch Up With That", "Bedroom Eyes", and "Mellow For Love". ✨✧ Oscar PetersonOscar Peterson Collection (In A Romantic Mood/Swinging Brass With The Oscar Peterson Trio) ... LP
Verve, 1955. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
2 classic albums from Oscar Peterson – packaged together in one 70s collection! First up is In a Romantic Mood – a rare "with strings" date! We love Oscar Peterson with strings – a setting he never got to use that often, given the popularity of his famous trio recordings! When Oscar gets set up with strings, he seems to play even more freely than with a combo – let loose from rhythm a bit more than before, and instead focusing strongly on melody – which often comes off with a warmly lyrical feel. This album's a rare entry into the Peterson strings category – a great 50s date with Russ Garcia backing Oscar up – giving the album just the right mix of mellow and modern to match Peterson's magical work on the keys! In a way, the album's a link between two different styles of 50s jazz – some of the warmer string-laden work of the piano mainstream, and some of the sharper sounds of the Verve modern approach to the style – served up here by Oscar in ways that bring both modes together perfectly, with just the right dash of both. Titles include "Laura" and "Tenderly" – both tracks you'd have to have on an album like this – plus "Black Coffee", "Ruby", "Stella By Starlight", "A Sunday Kind Of Love", and "I Thought About You". Next is another unusual set – Swinging Brass With The Oscar Peterson Trio – one of Peterson's few albums with a larger group – featuring some great arrangements from Russ Garcia! For years, singer Freddy Cole was known as the brother of Nat the king – but for decades, the brother has kept on giving us music much longer than the famous star – to a point where it's always such a pleasure to enjoy Freddy's sound as he keeps on evolving! The singer's developed a nicely raspy tone as the years have gone on – one that's perfectly suited to the laidback vibe of this album – which features Randy Napoleon on guitar and John Di Martino on piano, with arrangements from both of them throughout. Joel Frahm adds some especially nice tenor and soprano sax – peppering the tunes gently with a real understanding of the role of a saxophonist on a vocal date – and titles include "The Lonely One", "My Heart Tells Me", "Temptation", "I'll Always Leave The Door A Little Open", "My Mood Is You", and "Love Like This Can't Last". What a subtitle – "The Cult Tracks Given Birth By The Superheroes Of The 70s"! And if you're thinking that the tracks are by Wolverine, Firestorm, and other 70s comic book creations, that's not the case – as the superheroes here are funky ones! More specifically, the tracks are great little groovers from the funky 45 underground – the kind of groups that really bubbled under in the charts at the time, many of whom never cut a full LP, but who released some monstrously great singles that made more than a bit of impact at the time. The set's got 20 tracks in all – all hard and funky – with titles that include "Super Soul Brother" by Timmie Rodgers, "Stand Up (part 1)" by Maskman & The Agents, "Spanky's Day Off" by Swingin Soul Machine, "It's The Real Thing (part 1)" by Electric Express, "Get It" by Wilmer & The Dukes, "Feelin Funky" by Brother Soul, "Cramp Your Style" by All the People, "Can't Get Satisfied" by Brother Jack McDuff, "Dynomite" by Tony Camillo's Bazuka, and "Foxy Lady" by Don Thompson. Dawn (Spain), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Cool reissue of a unique album by one of the oddest jazz groups ever. Les Jazz Modes was the brainchild of horn player Julius Watkins and tenor player Charlie Rouse (who was best known for his work with Monk). The two of them played tight chamber jazz lines with sort of a raw edge, and they added into the mix the soul jazz piano of Gildo Mahones, plus weird moody non-verbal backing by a female singer. The end result is a totally unique sound that's somewhere in between jazz and lounge, but which is probably more in the jazz camp, thanks to great soloing by Rouse. Tracks include "Bohemia", "Catch Her", "Hoo Tai", "Linda Delia", "Mood In Scarlet", and 2 bonus tracks! Reissued with the original cover, and 24 bit remastering, too. CD

McPherson's moved way past his earlier bop roots here – stretching things with a hip group that includes Buster Williams, Roy Brooks, and Barry Harris – crafting tunes that point the way at soul jazz in the 70s, with a more complicated and sophisticated approach to rhythm, but still a firm commitment to swing! A fantastic set from vocalist Mark Murphy – easily one of his greatest albums ever! The session was recorded for the MPS label in Germany during the late 60s – at a time when Murphy was recording some excellent work overseas – and the album features backings by a small combo peeled off of the legendary Clark-Boland Big Band, who were also working for MPS at the time! Murphy's vocals get some tremendous backing on the set from a combo that includes Jimmy Deuchar on trumpet, Sahib Shihab on baritone and flute, Derek Humble on alto, and Ronnie Scott on tenor – and the grooves are a mix of modal numbers and straight jazz tunes – almost always dancing together in a lovely way that unlocks a side of Murphy's talents that hadn't been recorded this way before. And in fact, the album's gone onto have a huge influence on the current sound of club jazz – and is a key inspiration for the work of Nicola Conte, Koop, Five Corners Quintet, and others! The vocals are perfect, too – with nary a hint of overindulgence, and always a sweet measured groove that works perfectly with the material – and titles include "My Ship", "I Don't Want Nothin", "Hopeless", "Sconsolato", "Why & How", and "Just Give Me Time". Steeplechase (Denmark), 2008. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
John Tchicai plays the music of Thelonious Monk, and a few of his own tunes too – in a wonderful set that shows beautifully why we always look out for work from this enigmatic saxophonist! There's definitely a Monkish vibe to the record, but Tchicai's approach is often quite personal too – creating warmth where others might have kept things angular, or changing up the pacing of the tunes – so that he's always leaving a very strong imprint of his own on the recordings, and not just covering too-familiar Monk territory. Each tune has a slightly different execution – and many numbers have John stepping out sparely, blowing in the lead – but with some warmth and depth that's quite different than the coldness of his modern moments from years back. And there's also a bit of Hammond on the record – played by George Colligan, who also alternates on piano – and use of that instrument really makes for a fresh sound too – a wonderful change that's almost like some 60s soul jazz take on Monk. Bass is by Steve Laspina and drums are by Billy Drummond – and titles include "Monk's Mood", "Coming On The Hudson", "Light Blue", "Ugly Beauty", "Ruby My Dear", and "Cool Copy". A much-needed look at the farther reaches of the legendary 60s Jamaican imprint Beverley's – headed by important producer Leslie Kong, and a launching pad for some of the bigger names in Jamaican music in the years to come! Yet here, the focus is on a less-exposed side of Kong's imprint – great rocksteady material from the underground of the scene – with a huge amount of material that we'd never heard before, including a number of cuts that appear here on CD for the first time ever! PLUS, the second CD in the set focuses on the great instrumental rocksteady on the label – almost a standalone record of tracks by legendary Jamaican saxophonist Roland Alphonso – on 18 more titles that include "Song For My Father", "Nothing Is Nothing", "Sock It To Me", "The Cat", "Sausage", "Middle East", "On The Move", "Jungle Bit", "Stream Of Life", "Soul Finger", and "Women Of The World". Stones Throw, 2021. New Copy 2LP ... $27.99 29.99
Steve Arrington's got a long long legacy in soul music – one that goes back to his late 70s work on Slave – but he also sounds completely contemporary here, working in collaboration with a whole host of producers who were no doubt influenced by his creations of the past, and help Arrington find a whole new vibe in his music! Tunes are often spare, and served up in a blend of vocals, beats, keyboards, and guitar – yet all elements are given some cool, crispy twists and turns through a host of hip hop elements and other contemporary modes – but all at a level that only seems to bring new live to Arrington's music, and not overwhelm it. The set features work from Mndsgn, Gifted & Blessed, J Rocc, Knxwledge, Devin Morrison, and others – and titles include "Love Knows", "Keep Dreamin", "Soulful I Need That In My Life", "Make A Difference", "Joys Of Love", "It's Alright", "Make Ya Say Yie", "You're Not Ready", "Good Mood", and "Work On It". Chet BakerChet – Ballads By Chet Baker (with bonus track) ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1959. Used ... $1.99
One of a handful of late 50s albums that Chet Baker recorded for Riverside – all of which are some of his last great 50s work in the studio, before a shift in the 60s to a wider-ranging approach to his music! The style here is definitely in the "classic" Baker mode set down for Pacific Jazz – but a bit more fleshed out by the other players in the set – who seem to push a bit more personality into the tunes, and not just let Chet's trumpet dominate. The sound is soft and gentle – as you'd expect from the title – and other players include Bill Evans, Pepper Adams, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, Connie Kay and Philly Joe Jones – all bringing a bit of a New York undercurrent to the west coast Baker solo style. Titles include "How High the Moon", "It Never Entered My Mind", "If You Could See Me Now", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Time On My Hands", and "You And The Night And Music". Also includes the bonus track "Early Morning Mood". CD

Chet BakerIntimacy ... CD
Red (Italy), 1987. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
An album that definitely lives up to its title – as it's one of those nicely stripped-down sessions that Chet Baker recorded overseas in the last years of his life – done in close collaboration with the great Nicola Stilo, a musician who really helps bring something special out in Baker's music! Nicola plays guitar, flute, and piano – shifting between each to fit the mood of the long, blue performances by Chet – and the pair also get help from bassist Rocky Knauer, who comes in gently to just move things along with a light touch. Tracks are nice and long, and titles include "Arborway", "Margarine", "Zingaro", "You Can't Go Home Again", "DS Dilemma", and "But Not For Me". CD

Charlie BarnetCharlie Barnet ! ? ! ? ... LP
Choreo/AVA, 1962. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Later work from Charlie Barnet, but a set that really cooks nicely overall – still with the strong sax tones of earlier years, but also with a groovier sort of sparkle that marks the 60s date of the session! The tunes are short, but Charlie gets plenty of space to do his thing – leading off boldly with a great sense of tone, and blowing with some surprisingly inventive lines as the set rolls on. There's a bit of organ in the mix – uncredited, like the rest of the players – and titles include "Coachella Blue", "Mood Indigo", "Leapin At The Lincoln", "East Side West Side", "The Great Gong Of Hong Kong", and "Tappin At The Tappa". John Barry/Shirley BasseyGoldfinger (60th anniversary edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
United Artists/La La Land, 1964. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99 About February 7, 2025
The soundtrack that put John Barry over the top – and to many, THE James Bond soundtrack! The album chills from the first notes of the haunting title theme – the majestic "Goldfinger", sung by Shirley Bassey with a tone that's as dangerous as a razor-sharp hat spinning through the air! Barry then takes over with some wonderful instrumentals – a blend of crime jazz, mood pieces, chase themes, and more – all peppered with that dark dark Bond theme that we love so much! Titles include "Into Miami", "Teasing The Korean", "Alpine Drive", "Bond Back In Action", "Gassing The Gangsters", and "Death Of Goldfinger". CD

John Barry/Tom JonesThunderball ... LP
United Artists, 1965. Very Good+ ... $14.99
One of the greatest of Barry's scores for the James Bond films – early enough to be raw, but confident enough to change up the mood nicely! The theme song features vocals by Tom Jones – and the rest of the tunes almost reads as a who's who of hipster influences, as so many of them have been taken up by other artists as band or album names. Titles include "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", "Thunderball", "The Bomb", "Chateau Flight", "Bond Below Disco Volante", "Death Of Fiona", and "Switching The Body". LP, Vinyl record album

Daniel BechetSongs To My Father (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Vogue/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1979. Sealed ... $14.99
A rare French album of funky fusion from drummer Daniel Bechet – dedicated to his father, the famous saxophonist Sidney Bechet – yet served up in a style that's nothing at all like the elder's musical legacy! Instead, Daniel works here in a warm blend of guitars and keyboards, especially the latter – as the set rolls along with a warm soulful vibe throughout, so that even the drums, while grooving, are wrapped up strongly as part of the overall sound! There's almost a Steely Dan level of perfection to the record – recalling the sound of the Hoops McCann project in the 80s – and titles include "Sweet Stuff", "Night Clouds", "Brother Jacques", "Saturday Night Flavour", "Don't Be Shy", "Astral Dance", and "Jacqueline's Mood". Tony BennettTony Makes It Happen/Yesterday I Heard The Rain ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $8.99 19.99
A pair of late 60s Columbia classics from Tony Bennett – back to back on a single CD! First up is Tony Makes It Happen – a very jazzy album, with a group that features Joe Wilder and Joe Newman on trumpets, Urbie Green on trombone, Joe Soldo on flute, and orchestrations from Marion Evans – all of whom really bring out those unique qualities that set Bennett apart from so many other singers in his generation! Where a Vic Damone might have used his inherent richness to push things over the top, the maturing Tony is a master of restraint – still able to run the full gamut of his amazing range, but set up with these beautiful arrangements that bring some adult understanding to the tunes, in a beautifully subtle vibe. Titles include "What Makes It Happen", "I Don't Know Why", "Can't Get Out Of This Mood", "She's Funny That Way", "A Beautiful Friendship", and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore". Next is Yesterday I Heard The Rain – fantastically mature work from Tony Bennett – a record that follows in that great direction the singer was taking in the 60s – delivering sophisticated vocals that didn't care much for the charts, but which really stand the test of time as the years go by! As on some of Tony's best from the period, arrangements are by Torrie Zito – whose careful orchestrations always let Bennett's vocals soar out in the lead, while also hitting some occasional flourishes that bring just the slight touch of drama to the music – but never in the over the top styles of some of his contemporary! Space is the key here – lots of space between the words and the notes – which makes even simpler songs sound pretty darn amazing. Titles include "Sweet Georgie Fame", "Fool Of Fools", "Only The Young", "I Only Have Eyes For You", "Yesterday I Heard The Rain", and a surprisingly great version of "Hushabye Mountain". CD

George BensonPacific Fire ... CD
CTI/King (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99 About March 12, 2025
Unusual work from the great George Benson – a wonderful session that was recorded by CTI during George's classic years for the label – but issued only briefly a number of years later, and slightly lost amongst the rest of his catalog! The material's great, though – and has George in top form for the sweet 70s funk years – working with arrangements by Ronnie Foster and David Matthews – on tunes that also include keyboards by Foster and Bobby Lyle, trombone from Fred Wesley, saxes from David Sanborn, Joe Farrell, Michael Brecker, and Ronnie Cuber – and even a bit of additional guitar from Eric Gale! There's a nice mix of modes here – some tight funky cuts, some more flowing numbers, and even one more traditional jazz tune with a great vocal by George – on the classic "Moody's Mood For Love". Other titles include "Melodia Espanol", "Pacific Fire", "Em", "Bandoleros Caballa", "Let Your Love Come Out", and "Knock On Wood". CD

Sun/Afrodelic (Italy), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 29.99
Not the Black Devil Disco club, but instead a very unique combo from the South African scene of the 70s – one that features all sorts of cool work on organ and guitar from leader Pops Ismail Mohammad – and both flute and tenor from SA jazz legend Basil Coetzee! The album's a bit jazz, but it's also more in a soul instrumental mode – with drums and bass fleshing things out, but still keeping a nicely laidback groove – and one that's very different than you might expect from the "disco" in their name! Titles include "Slow Mood", "Kids In The Dark", "Whiter Shade Of Pale", "Spiritual Feel Riding The Blue", "Dawn", and "No More Tears". LP, Vinyl record album

BlowflyBlowfly On Tour ... LP
Weird World, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $11.99 16.99
Excellent stuff – and one of the funkiest albums ever cut by Blow Fly! This is his second LP – and it's a funky recounting of a successful tour around the US, with Blow telling the story of the trip, as the mood and groove changes from track to track, as the story moves from city to city. Blow's closest to his roots as Clarence Reid, soul singer, on this one – and the vocal style is great all the way through, with a hip mix of monologues and singing that's really great. Even better, though, is the band – which grooves with a mix of funky bass, hard drums, and tight riffing that makes us wish we'd been around to catch the tour! And not only that, the goofy cover is super-sexy-silly, just right for the LP! LP, Vinyl record album
