Modern Jazz QuartetDjango ... CD
Prestige/OJC, Mid 50s. Used ... $1.99
A stone classic from the Modern Jazz Quartet – recorded back when the group still featured Kenny Clarke in its membership, but already with some of the more serious, somber tones that would mark the combo's more famous years! Tracks here are from a variety of sessions in 1953, 1954, and 1955 – and trace an evolution of the MJQ style from initial more composed renditions of bop and modern jazz, to some of the more ambitious colors and tones of the Lewis-penned songbook. Titles include longish readings of "Django" and "La Ronde Suite", plus "Milano", "But Not For Me", "The Queen's Fancy", and "Delaunay's Dilemma". CD
(OJC pressing.)
Also available Django (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD 11.99

Kai WindingModern Country (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Verve, 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
One of the grooviest albums recorded by trombonist Kai Winding in the 60s – a set that follows the larger ensemble mode he moved to after parting ways with trombonist JJ Johnson, yet one that also has some surprisingly groovy elements in the mix! The album was recorded in Nashville, and features the "modern country" promised in the title – as Kai takes on tunes from the Nashville songbook, with help from Bill McElhiney and Grady Martin on the larger charts – the latter of who also plays guitar on record, alongside Nashville legend Harold Bradley! There's some great use of organ at times, which really emphasizes a more soulful vibe in the music – and the Anita Kerr singers come in on a few tracks, with those wonderful harmonies that sound even better in a non-country setting than they do on their standard work for RCA. Titles include "Wolverton Mountain", "Busted", "I Really Don't Want To Know", "Detroit City", "I Walk The Line", "Dang Me", and "Slippin Around". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram pressing – pressed at Third Man!)

✨✧ Antonio Carlos Jobim & OthersSongbook Instrumental ... CD
Lumiar (Brazil), 1995. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An excellent batch of modern instrumental readings of some of Jobim's greatest compositions – put together with the usual respect and care of the Lumiar label, and featuring a huge number of great Brazilian jazz players, like Joao Donato, Nelson Ayres, Sivuca, Roberto Menescal, Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, Antonio Adolfo, Nico Assumpcao, Osmar Milito, and Jobim himself! The arrangements are haunting, and some tracks have wonderful instrumentation (trumpet/piano, cello quartet, etc) that really opens up these great tracks. Titles include "Surfboard", "Tema Para Ana", "Tema Jazz", "O Homem", "Stoneflower", "Radames Y Pele", and "Dialogo". 2 CDs, with lots of niceness! Note that a number of these tracks (if not all of them) are on the 5 volume Jobim series that we carry, also on Lumiar. CD

✨✧ Gerry MulliganGerry Mulligan Songbook (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
Gerry Mulligan meets up with a great array of 50s modernists here – in specially setting dedicated to all Mulligan-penned compositions! Although a radical player himself on the baritone sax, Gerry also added something strong to the 50s jazz catalog with his great tunes from the early days – gently modern numbers that slowly became standards over the years, thanks to respect from other players. The best of these tracks are showcased here – played by Mulligan with a sax section that includes Zoot Sims on alto and tenor, Al Cohn on tenor and baritone, Lee Konitz on alto, and Allan Eager on alto and tenor. Rhythm is by the piano-less section of Freddie Green on guitar, Henry Grimes on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums – and titles include "Venus De Milo", "Revelation", "Sextet", "Turnstyle", "Four & One More", "Crazy Day", and "Disc Jockey Jump". Duke EllingtonBethlehem Years Vol 1 (aka Historically Speaking) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1956. Near Mint- ... $3.99
The album's a bit less "historical" than you might guess from the title – at least at the time it was issued in the mid 50s! The material is from Chicago sessions recorded in 1956 – unusual non-Columbia material for the period, featuring the Ellington group working in a slightly older-styled mode. Much of the material is from the earlier songbook of the orchestra – but it's done here with some slight modern touches that show the 50s impulses of the group firmly in place. Players include Cat Anderson and Clark Terry on trumpet, Johnny Hodges on alto, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, and Harry Carney on baritone sax – and titles include "Midriff", "Ko Ko", "Lonesome Lullaby", "Upper Manhattan Medical Group", "Jack The Bear", "Stompy Jones", and "Creole Love Call". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ennio MorriconeMorricone Segreto Songbook 1962 to 1973 ... CD
Sugar/Decca, 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
A cool collection of vocal songs from the world of soundtrack maestro Ennio Morricone – many of which are more unusual than some of his bigger themes, and brought together here as a great addition to the Segreto series! The work runs from the early 60s to the early 70s – and the package mixes together dreamy female vocal numbers, catchy western themes, and plenty more great bits – all at a level that also showcases the way the maestro was working in Italian vocal music during the 60s, before moving more firmly into the world of cinema. The package features 21 rare tracks in all – including one number by a singer who's completely unknown – with titles that include "Splash" by Peter Boom, "Fruscio Di Foglie Verdi" by Trio Junior, "Una Stanza Vuota" by Lisa Gastoni, "Pioggia Sul Tuo Viso" by The Sorrows, "Nuvole" by Jimmy Fontana, "You & I" by King Harvest, "Luce Chiara Per Vergine" by Edda Dell'Orso, "Filastrocca Vietnamita" by Sergio Endrigo, "Metti Una Sera A Cena" by Florinda Bolkan, and "Matto Caldo Soldi Morto Girotondo" by I Cantori Moderni Di Alessandroni.
