✨✧ Milt Jackson (Modern Jazz Quartet)First Q (aka Modern Jazz Quartet) ... LP
Savoy, 1951/1952. Near Mint- ... $4.99
Some of the earliest material ever recorded by the Modern Jazz Quartet – early 50s sides that were originally issued as 78rpm singles! Some of the material was first released under the name of the Milt Jackson Quartet – but featured the lineup of Jackson on vibes, John Lewis piano, Percy Heath bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. Yet other tracks on the set have bassist Ray Brown in for Heath and drummer Al Jones in for Clarke – both players who make for a slightly different groove in the company of Jackson and Lewis. Tunes are short, but already show that Lewis love of chromatic tones – and titles include "Yesterdays", "Love Me Pretty Baby", "Milt Meets Sid", "Moving Nicely", "D&E", "True Blues", and "Autumn Breeze". A double-length set of work from The Modern Jazz Quartet – a collection of material from their first decade or so on Atlantic Records! Even at this early point in their career, the Modern Jazz Quartet were plenty proud of their relation to and reception in Paris – almost rubbing their international fame in the faces of other American combos with the title and cover of this record! The set's still got the quartet at their crisp early best – before any of the sometimes too academic or too serious tones of later sides – and tracks are mostly shortish, ringing out with especially nice vibes from Milt Jackson. Titles include an early reading of the title cut "Concorde", plus an extended "Gershwin Medley", and the tracks "All Of You", "I'll Remember April", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "Ralph's New Blues". A stone classic from the Modern Jazz Quartet – recorded back when the group still featured Kenny Clarke in its membership, but already with some of the more serious, somber tones that would mark the combo's more famous years! Tracks here are from a variety of sessions in 1953, 1954, and 1955 – and trace an evolution of the MJQ style from initial more composed renditions of bop and modern jazz, to some of the more ambitious colors and tones of the Lewis-penned songbook. Titles include longish readings of "Django" and "La Ronde Suite", plus "Milano", "But Not For Me", "The Queen's Fancy", and "Delaunay's Dilemma". CD

Modern Jazz QuartetLegendary Profile ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A cool 70s album from the Modern Jazz Quartet – and one that has John Lewis playing a bit of electric piano, in addition to his usual acoustic keys! At some level, it almost feels like the group's working off the lessons learned during their Apple Records years – and are also picking up some elements of Milt Jackson's work on other projects in the late 60s – as the record has a soulful groove you might not normally expect from the MJQ, and less of the more academic tones that had marked some of their earlier 60s recordings for Atlantic. Tunes are really nicely focused, but still have that strong sense of space and sound that's the Lewis' hallmark – and Jackson's nicely-pointed vibes sound really great next to Lewis' keys, whether acoustic or electric. Titles include "The Legendary Profile", "Valeria", "Misty Roses", "The Martyr", and "What Now My Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, Mid 50s. Very Good+ ... $19.99
The Modern Jazz Quartet make a rare appearance on Verve Records in the 50s – splitting half the album here with the classic Oscar Peterson Trio! The live performance was recorded in Chicago, and definitely has the MJQ working in a looser vibe than on some of their late 50s recordings for Atlantic – a bit more open and swinging, in a Verve mode – with some of the bop inspiration that first showed up on their early Prestige recordings – as you'll hear on the cuts "Now's The Time", "Round Midnight", and "D&E Blues". The second half of the record features live material from Oscar Peterson's hip group with Herb Ellis on guitar and Ray Brown on bass – that great drum-less lineup that really lets Oscar take off on piano – on tunes that include "Big Fat Mama", "Should I Love You", "Indiana", and "Elevation". Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe/FourmenonlyModern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe/Fourmenonly – Complete Recordings (Trees/Position 2000/Fourmenonly Vol 1/Science Fiction Stories) (3CD set) ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CDs ... $38.99 42.99
A fantastic lost legacy in European free improvisation – the complete works of a group who were first known as Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe, then later as Fourmenonly – presented here in a beautiful 3CD set! First up is the album Trees – issued on a small label in 1968, but a set that matches the groundbreaking energy of the early work on FMP – played by a group that features Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Wilfreid Eichorn on tenor and soprano sax, Claus Buhler on bass, Rudi Thielmann on drums, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, Mellophon, piston, and percussion! The group have a melodic vibe at the core – often feeling out the initial space as a unit, then exploding with sound and color – and really making especially great work of the talents of Joos and Eichorn – players who work together with great power, driven on by the others. Titles include "Lonely Time", "Trees", "Schnee Verbrennt", "Change Of Beauty", and "The Devil Is Green Blue Yellow". CD also features a bonus unreleased improvisation too! Next is Position 2000 – a record of even longer improvisations, and one that shows the quintet really developing their sound – strongly aware of the farther reaches, but always beginning in some more colorful passages that almost have a melody, before exploding out with very vibrant energy! The lineup is the same as on the debut – with Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, mellophone, Indian flute, and percussion – and Wilfried Eichorn on tenor, soprano sax, bass clarinet, flute, and percussion – alongside Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Klaus Buhler on bass, and Rudi Thielmann on drums. Titles include "The Sun Is Coming Over", "Position 2000", and "Where Love Forever Shines". CD also features an unreleased improvisation. For the next album, bassist Buhler has departed the group – who are renamed Fourmenonly! Their first record is a brilliant set of free jazz from the German scene of the 70s – very different than other work of the time, in that there's maybe more of a future-thinking balance between sounds and silence, frenzy and fragility – all served up by a quartet that features Herbert Joos on trumpet and flugelhorn, Wilfried Eichhorn on tenor and soprano sax, Helmuth Zimmer on piano and percussion, and Rudi Theilmann on drums and percussion. Titles include "Viridiana/Ich Und Meine Bruder/Compulsion" and "Count Down/Excess". On the album Eight Science Fiction Stories, the Fourmenonly lineup is expanded by trombonist Wolfgang Czelusta – and perform some fantastic work billed as "science fiction stories", all composed by Herbert Joos. The sound is as revolutionary as on the group's earliest material, but also maybe more compact as well – nicely focused, with especially strong emphasis on the interplay between Czelusta on trombone, Wilifried Eichorn on bass clarinet, flute, and oboe, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, trumpet, and mellophone. The piano of Helmuth Zimmer is amazing – almost Cecil Taylor-like in intensity at times – and drummer Rudi Theilmann does a great job of moving from passages of full-on power to more spacious percussion. Titles include "Lucifer Is Marching On", "Dead Season", "The Beauty Without A Face", "Departure", "Plastic Happiness", and "Space Wall". CD

The MJQ always manage to sound especially great when working on music for film – and this album's a great illustration of that fact! The work here is written by John Lewis, for a movie that never lasted the test of time as much as the record – and it's some of John's most evocative writing of the time – almost imagistic enough without the film – filled with tones and colors that are quite visual, especially in the hands of this great group! Selections are played by the core quartet of Milt Jackson on vibes, John Lewis on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums – and titles include "The Golden Striker", "One Never Knows", "The Rose Truc", "Venice", "Cortege", and "Three Windows". Nearly every track has a different sort of vibe – maybe a change in flavor to match the change in drink names that grace the titles – served up with nicely lean backing, in a way that maybe makes this set similar to some of the classic Italian grooves by The Cabildos from the same time! Most tracks are around the two minute mark – maybe a shot, more than a full cocktail – and titles include "Pernod", "Whisky", "Vodka", "Kirsh", "Curacao", "Rum", "Maraschino", "Gin", and "Strega". Far Out (UK), 2009. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A different groove than usual for Jose Roberto Bertrami – and a record that definitely lives up to the promise of its title! Bertrami's really broken free from the regular Azymuth groove on this set – much more so than on some of his recent solo albums – playing here with a vibe that's very jazzy at times, with a range of different modes – mod one minute, funky the next, and sweetly straight at other points! Jose Roberto handles his familiar Fender Rhodes on most tracks – but also plays a bit of organ and acoustic piano as well – and other instrumentation includes guitar, bass, and drums – plus added horns on some of the fuller, funkier tracks. A few tunes feature some great wordless vocals from Bertrami – scatting along with his keyboards in a warm and breezy way – and production on the set is great, thanks to the Far Out touch – never too smooth, and quite different from any of Bertrami's albums recorded in the US. Titles include "Laranjeiras", "Choro", "No Tempo Da Bossa", "O Pescador", "Ecstatic 70", "Brilliante", "Eighties Times", "Aventura", and "Maixa". CD

A wonderful collection of work from this overlooked modern jazz combo from the 50s German scene – a group whose material was originally issued on a handful of 45rpm EP titles by a Christian music company – finally brought together in this excellent full length collection! The Modern Jazz Group Freiberg have a style that echoes the other European Jazz Sounds releases of the time by Joki Freund and Michael Naura – a groove that draws strongly from the best American modern impulses of the time – with both a west coast style of arranging, and a bit more New York fire on the way that the soloists come across! The group here has a strong trumpeter in the lead – Raymond Court – who clearly loves Clifford Brown, but also has his own sort of vibe, too – working here with Ewald Heidepriem on piano, Karl Theodore Geier on bass, and Eberhard Stengel on drums. Titles include "Remember Clifford", "Blues Pour Alice", "Solar", "My Old Flame", "A Night At Tony's", "St Joseph's Blue Concept", and "Jubilation". A bit more high concept than before for Stanley Clarke – almost a suite of sorts, but one that still has some great standout tunes in the mix! Although Clarke used to bring his higher concepts to bear in the space of a single song, this one's more of a full exploration of the character in the title – served up at the best moments with more soul than on previous albums from Stanley, some nicely tuneful tracks that almost get a bit funky at points. Most of the record features Miles Davis recording with a quintet that includes Thelonious Monk on piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – on longer versions of "The Man I Love" (in 2 takes), "Swing Spring", and "Bemsha Swing". These sides have a great bop/modern approach that's a nice extension of the styles that Jackson and Davis were playing on Blue Note in earlier years. Also added to the set is one number from 1956 – a version of "Round Midnight" recorded in early sessions with John Coltrane on tenor, and the Red Garland Trio on rhythm – different than the rest of the tracks, but still quite nice! Columbia/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... $14.99
Hard driving jazz from the Japanese scene of the 50s! The album's one of the best recorded by Nobu Hara and the legendary Sharpes & Flats group – a really swinging set of big band jazz that drives with the power of some of the 60s recordings by the Clarke-Boland Big Band, and which offers plenty of space for the soloists to swing out during the set with really dynamic energy – especially as the saxes and trumpets break from the group to start their own sort of presence in the music! Unfortunately, all the notes are in Japanese – so we can't tell you the exact lineup or the song titles – but the album's a strong one, and a perfect example of the strength of the Japanese scene in the postwar years! A cool set of modern jazz numbers put together by the Qualiton Records label in Hungary – a small but strong outlet of jazz during the years of the Iron Curtain! Steps AheadModern Times ... LP
Elektra, 1984. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A classic set from this fusion supergroup – a great quintet that features keyboards from Warren Bernhardt, vibes from Mike Mainieri, tenor and soprano from Michael Brecker, bass from Eddie Gomez, and drums from Peter Erskine. As with other Steps Ahead records, the vibes really balance out the keyboards strongly – at a level that keeps things from ever getting too smooth, even when the percussion is a bit more electronic. Brecker's reed lines also deepen the soul of the set – as does the always-great bass of Eddie Gomez – and titles include "Oops", "Self Portrait", "Safari", "Radio Active", and "Old Town". WW Norton, 2009. New Copy Book ... $4.99 25.95
We're not usually fans of books on a single album – but in this case, we gladly make an exception – as the creation and circulation of Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue is definitely powerful enough to fill volumes of writing! Author Richard Williams does a great job of exploring this crucial piece of jazz – not only detailing the important session and musical moment that led to the record's creation, but also looking it its influence for decades after its release – not just in jazz, but in American popular culture as well! VariousBoston Goes Disco – Obscure Disco, Boogie, & Modern Soul From Boston Mass & The Surrounding Areas ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99 19.99
A huge discovery in music – most of which we've never heard before, and which shows that the Boston scene was getting pretty busy during the classic club years – even if the city's grooves never reached the same fame as cuts from New York, Philly, and other points south! The package is definitely a labor of love – put together by DJ/collector Serge Gamesbourg – who's clearly done a hell of a lot of work to unearth these rare singles and small label releases – records that maybe didn't even make it down to New York City back in the day, and which were probably crowed out of the record racks, even if they did! Most of these cuts are nicely rough around the edges – sometimes in more of a fast funk mode, other times with all the cool offbeat touches of indie label club cuts – and almost all numbers get a special Serge Gamesbourg edit, in order to bring out the grooviest elements of the tracks. Titles include "No More Games" by Larry Wedgeworth & Clique, "All In Good Time" by Wildlife featuring Vi Taylor, "Play It By Ear" by Cojo, "Get Up & Dance Don't Want No Party Poo Pershere" by Carrie Mims & Herbe Lee River Junction, "Feel The Music" by Dreamflight, "I Want Your Body" by Royale, "Free For All" by Second Wind, "I'm Gonna Get You (Meeow)" by Carrie Mims & Herb Lee River Junction, "You Make Me Happy" by Christopher Michael Band, "Keep It Comin On" by Gypsy, and "Fire Funk" by Hypnotics. 2CD set features one disc of the music in a continuous mix by Serge – the other with unmixed versions. Tramp (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
A soaring blend of rare club tracks from the glory days of the American disco underground – music that was cut in the deep shadows of the mainstream market at the time, and which has gone on to have a lot longer staying power too! The cuts here are all from very obscure releases on tiny labels around the country – most so small, the records were issued on 7" singles, not the usual 12" club DJ release – which has made them even more overlooked in the passing decades, given that so many collectors of this sort of music are digging for the larger format! Yet interest in rare club from the pre-house years has never been stronger – and a set like this is a great way to glimpse a scene that was out of reach even to most folks who were around at the time – a smoking set of 17 groovers that include "Can You Dig It" by Teakwood, "Bay Trippin" by Parnassus, "Come Along With Me & Party" by Monofide, "I Wanna Dance" by Compton Hodge, "Feel In" by The Unit III, "My Woman My Woman" by Joshua Jackson, "She's The One" by Nature, "Bronco Queen" by Van Buren, and "Sport City Rock" by Earl Turner. Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A great tribute to the mighty talents of Enja Records – a German label that really helped build bridges in the 70s – expanding out from its base in Munich to offer a lot of strong opportunities for American players as well! The Enja touch is a really special one – an approach that allows lots of freedom for the musicians, although rarely in a free jazz sort of way – as Enja helped find new levels of straight jazz expression at a time when so many other American labels were either getting very commercial, or closing up shop – one more reason why Enja's ability to welcome older artists in just the right way was so important. This 2CD set is overflowing with gems from the Enja catalog – 19 killers that include "Only Blue" by Bobby Jones, "Spacemaker" by Pepper Adams, "Blues For EP" by Mal Waldron, "Voyage" by Kenny Barron, "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" by John Scofield, "Outpost Blues" by Freddie Hubbard, "Body & Soul" by Tete Montoliu, "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child" by Hannibal Marvin Peterson, "Rahsaan's Run" by Woody Shaw, "My One & Only Love" by Bennie Wallace, "Kaybee" by Attila Zoller, "Peace" by Chet Baker, "By George" by Elvin Jones, "Soul Connection" by Dusky Goykovich, and "My Romance" by Archie Shepp. CD

Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970s/1980s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
An important part of the long legacy of Enja Records – a label that was based in Germany, but also offered key opportunities for expression to Japanese musicians over the years – especially during the 70s, when Enja released represented some of the few times these musicians were heard outside their local scene! Enja also maybe took even more chances with some of its Japanese artists than its American and European ones – allowing for some more outside, avant recordings – of which you'll find plenty here – mixed with a few straighter numbers as well. The package includes some moments when Japanese soloists join the groups of others, and lots more work by the musicians as leaders – and titles include "Night In Tunisia" by Yosuke Yamashita, "Alone Alone Alone" by Terumasa Hino, "Comme La Radio" by Akira Sakata, "Trinity" by Masahiko Sato, "Children Of The Night" by Bob Degen with Terumasa Hino, "Humpty Dumpty" by Akio Sasajima, "From Now On" by Karl Berger with Masahiko Sato, "Scarborough Fair" by Yosuke Yamashita and Hozan Hamamoto, "Ask Me Now" by Aki Takase and David Murray, and "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" by Aki Takase. Amazing music from the golden years of Ethiopian Music – a set of tracks that will take you beyond the music of Mulatu, into a wealth of other talents from the scene at the same time! A set that definitely lives up to its title – as it's kind of an extra dose of soulful tracks from the vaults of the many reissue projects handled by the Numero Group over the years! The collection brings together upbeat soul groovers, warm modern soul gems, and a few funkier cuts – in a mix that really rewrites any understanding that you might have of uptempo soul in the 70s – underground grooves that are quite far from the slicker disco of the charts, and which together make for a set that could easily pack the dancefloor! Strictly Samba, and strictly great stuff – a mix of contemporary work from the Far Out label and a host of other artists too – almost all of whom work here in a relatively classic mode! Although most of the tunes are recent, they'd fit right next to some of your classic samba sides from years past – thanks to an adherence to rootsy percussion, acoustic instrumentation, and recording techniques that really let the vocals come through strongly – adding a bold sense of soul to the music that really makes it groove. The package is really well done – and the non Far Out tracks make it way more than a straight label sampler – with work that includes "Beleza Beleza Beleza" by Trio Mocoto, "Era Bom" by The Ipanemas, "Maria Jose" by Nereu Mocoto & Swing, "Swingue Do Samba" by Roge, "Foi Um Rio Que Passou Em Minha Vida" by Tereza Cristina E Grupo Semente, "Sorri Pra Nos" by Armando Marcal, "Na Cadencia Do Samba" by Grupo Batuque, "Tudo De Bom" by Arthur Verocai, "Jongo Jade" by Aparecindinha, "Casamento Na Favela" by Zaira, and "Samba De Silvia" by Joyce. BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $29.99 32.99
An ear-opening set of Japanese jazz from a time when that nation's scene was really taking off – a period in the 70s when all sorts of new artists and new ideas were really flying around – and leaving behind a huge recorded legacy that's been mostly out of reach for us in the west! Japan always had a few big names in jazz that got exported overseas, but the work here is from some of the smaller names who were still turning out incredible music – much of it only issued on vinyl, and not reissued later – brought together here with copious notes that really tell you a heck of a lot about the music! There's definitely a post-Coltrane vibe going on – lots of spiritual elements, mixed with both moments that are funkier and more soulful, and others that are a bit more freewheeling – often stretched out on extended tracks that really let the artists take off and find their space. Titles include "Black Nile" by Hideyasu Terakawa, "Kirisame" by Ryusei Quartet, "Honey Sanba" by Katsuyuki Itakura, "Cumulonimbus" by Shigeharu Mukai, "Song Of Island" by Yasuhiro Kohno Trio + One, "Phoebus" by Hiroshi Murakami & Dancing Sphinx, "Morning Tiede" by Kohsuke Mine, "Kemo Sabe" by Masao Nakajima, "Song For Hope" by Aki Takase, "Planets" by Masaru Imada Trio + 1, "1/4 Samba" by Tatsuya Nakamura, "Acoustic Chicken" by Koichi Matsukaze, and "Cumorah" by Eiji Nakayama. ✨✧ VariousKent & Modern Records Blues Into The 60s Vol 1 – Dirty Work Going On ... CD
Ace/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A huge collection of rare blues material from west coast powerhouse label Kent/Modern Records – a really important indie during the postwar R&B scene in LA, still going strong here well into the 60s! Modern was a real pioneer in recording electrified blues during the 50s – maybe every bit as important as Chess Records, with a roster of talent that drew from the Memphis and Texas scenes, and which also included blues musicians who'd migrated west as well! The Modern approach always lived up to its name – helping evolve rootsier styles into more sophisticated modes, often unlocking currents of jazz and nascent soul in the music – so that by the time of the 60s, the company (and its related Kent Records imprint) kept on moving things forward – recording so much amazing work, a good deal of it was never even issued on record at the time. That's definitely the case here – as the collection brings together a large number of tracks that either appear here for the first time ever, or which didn't make their debut until Japanese CD releases back in the 90s – brought together in a collection of 26 tracks with plenty of appeal for fans of raw soul too. Titles include "Blues In G Minor" by Big Jay McNeely, "Let Me Be Your Eagle Baby (take 1)" by King Solomon, "Go Ahead (take 1)" by Fillmore Slim, "Jimmy's Special" by Little Joe Blue, "Sweet Little Angel" by Larry Davis, "Jealous Woman" by T-Bone Walker, "On My Way Back Home (alt)" by Flash Terry, "Fast Gun Annie" by Billy Ray, "Consider Yourself (ext)" by Stacy Johnson, "Down Now (take 3)" by BB King, "New Figure" by King Solomon, and "One Thing We Know" by Flash Terry. VariousMainstream Modern Soul – 1969 to 1976 ... CD
Kent/Mainstream (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A huge array of soul tracks from the Mainstream label – an imprint that was probably best known for its jazz work of the early 70s, and as the launching pad for a few key rock groups – but one who also cut some killer soul tracks in the best New York and Philly styles of the period! Mainstream only ever issued most of its soul material as singles – 45s issued on their own label, and under the IX Chains, Brown Dog, and New Moon imprints too – spread out in an array of under-circulated, poorly-distributed releases that never fully got their due at the time – partly because much of the music was years ahead of its time! There's a groove here that reminds us of the hippest sounds from bigger labels – including Philly International or All-Platinum – with a similar blend of sweetness, honest vocal performances, and some top-shelf studio work that gives the lyrics a hell of an instrumental push, but all without ever sounding slick or commercial. The package is a much-needed look at this scattered legacy – and brings together 24 rare cuts that include "These Memories" by Almeta Lattimore, "I'm The One Who Loves You" by JG Lewis, "Come Back (part 1)" by The Fantastic Puzzles, "I Can't Give You Up" by Linda Perry, "It Ain't Like It Used To Be" by Randolph Brown & Company, "No Rebate On Love" by The Dramatics, "You're A Friend Of Mine" by Words Of Wisdom, "Satisfy My Woman" by Calvin Arnold, "Plain Out Of Luck" by Nia Johnson, "We're Not Too Young To Fall In Love" by Jackey Beavers Show, "Let The People Talk" by The Steptones, "To Whom It May Concern" by Ellerine Harding, "It's So Real" by McArthur, "Stop & Think A Minute" by Charles Beverly, and "That's The Way She Is" by Bobby Earl Williams. Staubgold (Germany), 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $13.99
A great assortment of funky jazzy cuts from recent years – a stunning package that shows just how much the love of jazz on the dancefloor has exploded in the contemporary underground – in ways that are so different than the modes of decades back! Yes, there was a time when "jazz" on a dance track meant a lame sax solo or stolen sample from the 70s – but things really evolved past that, to a whole generation of artists who've really re-embraced live instrumentation mixed with clubbier rhythms – pushing things way way past the more familiar jazz funk sounds of back in the day! In other words, these cuts are new, but also resonate with some vintage elements – very fresh, and exploding with new ideas and very groovy sounds – titles that include "Finding Common Ground" by Mario Cruz, "Catfish Sandwich" by Brian Charette, "Yggdrasil" by PJS, "Theme From Quartet" by Fox Capture Plan, "Another Brick In The Wall" by Wildcard, "Falling In Love With Love" by Niki Haris, "Lisbon" by Markpaulnorton, "Gotta Be Free" by Nina Mya, "K's Dream" by Yusuke Shima, "San Gogo Fu" by Caroxfa, "Fly" by Nicole Banks, and "Jungle" by Shahin Novrasli. Mad music that's unlike anything else we can think of – a killer collection of funky grooves from the Ethiopian scene of the 70s – offered up here on a vinyl-only compilation! The set's a great one if you've heard the music of Mulatu, but want to dig a lot deeper – as the cats included on this set are most of his contemporaries from the golden years of Ethiopian music – and most of them work in a similar offbeat, other-worldly sort of style! Rhythms are skittish, horns are hypnotic, and the vocals on some of the tracks have a weird appeal that really transcends the boundaries of language – almost like another instrumental element that fits in wonderfully with the heavy grooves underneath. Titles on the collection are pulled from various volumes of the Ethiopiques series – making this set kind of a distillation of all its greatness. A tremendous entry in this wonderful series – a set that proudly proclaims its contents with the "NOW" on the cover! Back when the Spiritual Jazz series first started on the Jazzman label, the music was mostly relegated to material of the John Coltrane generation and the generation that followed – but in the past decade or so, there's been a huge explosion in new artists that explore the deeper, more righteous currents of jazz – music that's pulled in from the farther reaches of free improvisation, to righteous, message-oriented styles that often mix modal rhythms with more exploratory solo passages. Yet this new generation is hardly slavish to the sounds of Impulse Records – as they've really moved beyond, and have used a globe's worth of influences and new 21st Century concepts to bring fresh spirit to the music – opening things up in ways that have made this new movement one of our greatest sources of inspiration in recent years. This double-length entry is a fantastic overview of the sounds that are currently reshaping the planet – and titles on volume 1 include "Lizard Waltz" by Benjamin Herman "Wisdom Of Elders" by Shabaka & The Ancestors, "Soul" by Cat Toren's Human Kind, "Nimeton" by Oiro Pena, "Echoes Of Ancient Sahara" by Darryl Yokley's Sound Reformation, "Winter" by Black Flower, "Shamal Wind" by Chip Wickham, "An Angel Fell" by Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids, "Sounds Like Now" by Damon Locks, "Gnawa" by Makaya McCraven, and "The Black Ark" by Nat Birchall. There's lots and lots and lots of deeply funky numbers on the collection – and the package really takes us back to the glory days when BBE compilations were always turning us onto something new – especially during the Keb Darge glory days. 2CD set features one mixed disc, one unmixed – with titles that include "Back Ground Music" by Kalyanji Anandji, "Searching For Soul" by Jake Wade & The Soul Searchers, "ABC" by Hot Butter & Soul, "Spooky Do" by Dick Walter, "The Horse" by Val Merral's Orchestra, "It's Just Begun" by Hot City Bump Band, "Sally" by Frank Pleyer Big Band, "Love Is Just A Word" by Johnny Griffith Inc, "Can't Stop Talkin" by Art & Ron, "Family Affair" by The Generation Gap, "Gacek" by Jerzy Milian, "Rockin Chair" by John L Watson with White Mouse, "Pink Panther" by Alan Tew, "Twinkle Stars Boo Galoo (live)" by Oscar Harris & The Twinkle Stars, "The Message" by Tinga Stewart, and "Pru Urebu" by The Rias Orchestra. VariousThis Is Real – Kent/Modern Deep Soul Treasures ... CD
Kent/Modern/P-Vine (Japan), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $36.99
A huge helping of deep soul tracks from the south – South California, that is – from the mighty Kent/Modern label, home to a huge amount of under-discovered music in the 60s! Modern first hit its stride recording R&B and blues in the postwar years – but during the 60s, the company continued as a strong indie, through its Kent label – with a real dedication to the sorts of sounds that were not getting as much exposure elsewhere! Kent recorded a fair bit of artists from points south and east – hitting the southern circuit to find talent as much as Atlantic Records – but they also allowed the artists to really do their own thing, and come up with standout styles that aren't nearly as hammered down into a single label signature approach. The result is a great blend of music, as you'll hear here on this 48 track set – overflowing with gems by Earl Wright, Ruth Davis, Robert Ramsey, Danny Monday, Jimmy Robins, Foxfire, Johnny Adams, Vernon Garrett, The Other Brothers, Bobby John, Billy Watkins, The Sims Twins, Willie Gauff & The Love Brothers, Freeman King, Jeanette Jones, and many more! ✨✧ Stanley ClarkeModern Man/I Wanna Play For You ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), 1978/1979. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stanley Clarke at the height of his powers – two 70s classics back to back on CD! Modern Man is a bit more high concept than before for Stanley Clarke – almost a suite of sorts, but one that still has some great standout tunes in the mix! Although Clarke used to bring his higher concepts to bear in the space of a single song, this one's more of a full exploration of the character in the title – served up at the best moments with more soul than on previous albums from Stanley, some nicely tuneful tracks that almost get a bit funky at points. There's a bit of vocals on the record – courtesy of Dee Dee Bridgewater and others – and guests include Freddie Hubbard, Stan Getz, Harvey Mason, Tom Scott, and Airto. Titles include "More Hot Fun", "Slow Dance", "He Lives On", "Dayride", "Got To Find My Own Place", "Closing Statement", and "A Serious Occasion". I Wanna Play For You is a wickedly funky album from Stanley Clarke – perhaps his most fully-formed album of the Columbia years, and a set that really brings together his jazz and soul styles! There's a definite R&B vibe going on, but it's also one that's still quite heavy on bass work from Stanley – a groove that's not far from Bootsy Collins at times, but perhaps with a bit more jazz inflections. Jamming is kept to a minimum, which is fine by us – and the album's filled with really tuneful tunes that have an almost George Duke-like appeal. Guests include Tom Scott and Stan Getz on saxes, George Duke on piano, Harvey Mason and Steve Gadd on drums, and Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals. Titles include "I Wanna Play For You", "Just A Feeling", "Strange Weather", "My Greatest Hits", "School Days", and "Blues For Mingus". CD

A strange mix of material – but some great work overall! A rare pairing, and a great one too – as Paul Desmond joins the Modern Jazz Quartet for a unique live set from the early 70s – with a great sound that's even more wonderful than we expected! Desmond is always great no matter what the setting – but he sounds especially nice working here alongside the mix of piano and vibes offered by the MJQ – in a style that's subtle, but never as sleepy as some of their other records from the period, thanks to some sharper edges from Desmond. The alto sax really brings something new to this record – carving out snakey little lines that glow and glimmer with a nicely subdued soul – and in a way, the MJQ really just seem to be holding back in a role where they're Paul's accompanists, and not the main stars of the set. A brilliant collection of work from Stan Kenton – recordings from his Innovations Orchestra, the groundbreaking group from the years 1950 and 1951, which featured players that include Art Pepper, Bob Cooper, Shorty Rogers, and Laurindo Almeida! The work features Kenton in some of his most modern modes – taking the broad range of colors and tones he first started forging in the late 40s, and fusing them onto some modern jazz ideals of the early 50s. The result is some incredible music that still sounds extremely fresh today – tracks that still have a swinging rhythm and jazz-based solos, but which also have a keen ear towards the 20th Century Classical Music of mid century. Mindblowing jazz from Japan – a tremendous introduction to the 70s scene in Tokyo if you've never heard this music at all – and a package that also includes a fair bit of rare tracks, even if you're not a newcomer! The Japanese love of American jazz is no secret – and the music was spread widely there by American forces after WWII – but during the 70s, something really special happened, and the scene found a voice that was all its own – exploding with new energy to create sounds that were soulful, spiritual, and powerfully poetic! An incredible trip through the 70s Japanese jazz scene – a second volume of J Jazz that's even bigger and better than the first – with unknown gems from private presses, indie labels, and rarities from the Japanese branches of the major labels, too! Compilers Tony Higgins & Mike Peden (who are both also responsible for the nicely done notes) follow through on all of the things we loved about the first J Jazz compilation, but improve on it by going bigger and digging deeper. The majority of the tracks were recorded from 1969 through the late 70s – with a few recorded in later years – and all have a wonderful way of being open to the stylistic inventions of the time without getting hung up on trends. So while there's some fusiony funk and electric piano, there's plenty of acoustic instrumentation and timelessly inventive material. BBE has outdone themselves on this excellent collection – and titles include "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Terashita & Harold Land, "Daguri" by Kohsuke Mine Quintet, "Distant Thunder" by Mabumi Yamguchi Quartet, "Animal Garden" by Miyasaka + 5, "Mother Of The Future" by Electro Keyboard Orchestra, "Serenade To A Dimly Lit Street" by Hiroshi Matsumoto/Hideo Ichikawa Quartet, "Teru-Teru Bozu" (Black Keys) by Teru Sakamoto Trio, "Little Giant" by Nobuo & Sharps & Flats, "Brown Trout" by Akira Miyazawa and more – plus the CD bonus track "Original Bill" by Koichi Matsukaze Trio. 15 tracks on 2CDs. Rootsy blues from the start of the 50s – recorded in the south by the Modern Records label, an imprint who are better-known for their postwar work in their hometown of LA! The sounds here are much more spare and stripped-down than the jump blues and jazzy swingers of Modern's material from the west coast – and lots of these sessions were supervised by a young Ike Turner, who helped the label travel through the juke joint scene to find some killer talent! A fantastic collection throughout – with tracks that include "Blind Man" by Shintaro Quintet, "White Fire" by Takao Uematsu, "Aya's Samba" by Eiji Nakayama, "Earth Mother" by Koichi Matsukaze, "Dead Letter" by Tohru Aizawa, "Kaze" by Takeo Moriyama, "Long Neal" by Kiyoshi Sugimoto, "Unknown Point" by Mitsuaki Katayama, and "Little Island" by Fumio Karashima. 3LP set features bonus tracks – "Sea Breeze" by George Otsuka and "Ode To Workman" by Terumasa Hino and Reggie Workman. ✨✧ VariousZanzibara 10 – First Modern, Taarab Vibes From Mombasa & Tanga 1970 to 1990 ... CD
Buda (France), 1970s/1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from a new wave of music that hit the east African coast in the 70s – music from Zanzibar that echoes a lot of the swirling, echoing, other-worldly modes of the Ethiopian scene at the same time – often done with highly-inflected vocals next to a spacey organ line, stark percussion, and some occasional reed passages as well! As you'd guess from the title, the tracks here hail from the coastal cities of Mombasa and Tanga – and they've got a really haunting quality that may well make this one of the best volumes we've ever heard from the Zanzibara series – and one of the few to really rival the genius of the similar Ethiopiques releases. As with those, there's music here we never would have heard otherwise – 15 titles that include "Sikio" by Mohammed Mrisho & Black Star, "Humvui Alovikwa" by Zuhura & Party, "Mapenzi Yamepungua" by Shakila & Lucky Star, "Binti" by Matano & Morning Star, "Nisaidie Mpenzi" by Zein Musical Party, "Kabibi" by Maulidi Musical Party, "Mpishi" by Ali Mkali & Sta Mvita, and "Manahodha" by Malika & Party. ✨✧ Pee Wee CraytonTexas Blues Jumpin In Los Angeles – The Modern Music Sessions 1948 to 1951 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 40s/Early 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous guitarist, with a really mindblowing sound – easily one of the most powerful players on the electric guitar of the time! Pee Wee Crayton's got this full, rich tone that reminds us a lot of T Bone Walker – especially when he hits lots of raspy edges – and like Walker, the music here is more of a mix of jazz, jump, and R&B than the straighter blues you'd associate with Chicago electric guitarists a few years later – such as the musicians who recorded for Chess. The work's a rich illustration of the key criss-crossing of scenes and styles that happened in 40s LA – as musicians like Crayton moved from Texas, and picked up lots of hipper, modern elements on the coast! This package features 28 gems from the Modern Records vaults – all of them on CD for the first time ever, and most of them issued here for the first time ever too. Titles include "Texas Hop", "Old Fashioned Baby", "Huckle Boogie", "The Bop Hop", "Blues For My Baby", "Brand New Woman", "Central Avenue Blues", "Long After Hours", "I Love You So", "Tired Of Travelin", "Poppa Stoppa", and "Answer To Blues After Hours". ✨✧ VariousStone Crush – Memphis Modern Soul 1977 to 1987 ... CD
Light In The Attic, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A look at Memphis soul music that goes way beyond any Stax, Goldwax, or Atlantic Records collections you might own – partly because all of the tracks here are from a time in the city when all those other labels had stopped recording! Memphis is usually remembered for a 60s/early 70s stretch when the city was brimming over with record labels, studios, and top soul talent – but that latter aspect of the scene didn't stop when the record companies went bust – and instead, it just went underground, as lesser-known artists kept on developing great new sounds and styles! As you'd guess from the title, most of the work here is in a modern soul mode – often with rhythms that have a bit of boogie or club in the mix, but also with some of that developing southern soul approach that was maybe more strongly associated with the Malaco label down in Jackson. The scope of music is great, and the set's got very detailed notes on this under-documented time in the history of Memphis soul music – to support a great tracklist that includes "Can We Melt The Ice" by Morris, "You Mean Everything To Me" by Sweet Pearl, "The Doctor" by LA, "Stone Crush On You" by OT Skyes, "What Does It Take To Know A Woman Like You" by Greg Mason, "Always" by Silk Satin & Lace, "Right Thing" by Kick, "Convict Me" by Libra, "Slice Of Heaven" by Cato, "I'm Choosing You" by Magic Morris, "No Seat Dancin" by Frankie Alexander, and "Keep It To Yourself" by Captain Fantastic & Starr Fleet. ✨✧ Nicola Conte & OthersModern Sound Of Nicola Conte – Versions In Jazz-Dub ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A long-overdue collection of all the mixes, side-projects, and rare "Nicola Conte version" tracks that have cropped up in the past decade or so – work that's every bit as great as the material Conte includes on his own albums and singles! Nicola Conte's not a remixer – he's a re-imaginer – and when he sets out to serve up his own version of a track, he often starts from scratch – using his own band, his own arrangements, and his own key elements – all of which turn any projects for other artists into grooves that are very Conte-directed – the kind of classic jazz-infused gems that Nicola's been laying down on his own Schema Records label for over a decade! This double-disc set is filled with amazing work that Conte's done for other folks – and it also include a few rare and unreleased tracks under his own name as well – a massive helping of music that's really mindblowing throughout – sure to please any fan of Nicola, as well as anyone who digs the artists included in the package. Nicola Conte tracks include "Castles In The Rain", "Charade", "New Blues", "When I Wish Upon A Star", "Solo", "Black Is The Graceful Veil (acoustic version)", "Groovy Samba", and "All Or Nothing At All", which features vocals by Jose James! Other cuts include Conte mixes and reworks of "Stolen Moments (Midnight Mood rework)" by Mark Murphy, "Yellow Daisies" by Fertile Ground, "So Danco Samba (Nicola Conte rework)" by Til Bronner, "Terra De Ninguem" by Sabrina Malheiros, "Take Off (Campi's Idea version)" by Marco Di Marco, "3 Corners (For Friends & Relatives version)" by Five Corners Quintet, "You Are" by Povo, "Our Love" by Luisito Quintero, "Healing Blue (shape of jazz to come version)" by Sunaga T Experience, "Lotus Sun" by Maki Mannami, "Heaven (west coast vibes rmx)" by Bitter:Sweet, "Quiet Nights (out of the cool version)" by Re:Jazz, "Elevated States" by Thunderball, "Mood Indigo" by Akiko, "Take Five (Nicola Conte rmx)" by Roberto Roena, and "Kerma Elastica (Nicola Conte rmx)" by Bobby Hughes Combination. ✨✧ Oliver LomaxMood Modern – The Story Of Two Of The World's Greatest Recorded Music Libraries – KPM & Bruton Music ... Book
Vocalion (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the best book we've ever seen on the secret world of sound library music – those non-commercial recordings that are made away from the public, then lent out for later use in radio, film, and TV! Over the years, crate-diggers have brought a new sort of appreciation to sound library albums – and two of the best labels of the genre are the important KPM and Bruton labels in the UK – both home to fantastic sounds from artists who include Keith Mansfield, Syd Dale, David Lindup, Johnny Pearson, and many others! Records by these artists have achieved great fame in recent years – but because these guys weren't rock stars, or jazz musicians, their stories – and the stories of their studios and labels – have really been overlooked. Writer Oliver Lomax – who's also reissued many sound library gems via the Vocalion label – really does a great job of looking at KPM and Bruton – with a huge amount of historical detail, countless interviews with key figures, and even helpful details on the larger recording scene in the UK. The book features two sections of images – one color, one black and white – but it's very different than sound library album cover books, as the main focus here is on text, which spans 465 pages in great detail. ✨✧ VariousMessage From TK – It's A Miami Modern Soul World ... CD
TK/Solid (Japan), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A soulful message from the 70s – served up here on a collection that focuses on a mighty nice side of the TK Records label from back in the day! TK hit big fame with its Miami spin on disco in the mid 70s, but the label also had a great ear for other sorts of soul music too – and here, the focus is on the warmer, more sophisticated modern soul tracks that marked their output away from the chart hits – work created in the south, but with a hip vibe that resonates strongly with the best work in New York, Philly, or other northern cities. The tracks are all hand-picked by DJ Ryuhei The Man – who also does his own edits of a few tracks – and the set also features some rare singles from artists who never recorded a full album for TK. Titles include "All This Love That I'm Givin" by Gwen McCrae, "I Like My Birdie" by Leno Phillips, "Keep Her Happy" by Phillip Wright, "Never Had A Love So Good" by Charles Johnson, "Bessie" by JBs Wedge, "It's Your Sweet Love" by Jimmy Bo Horne, "The Way We Life" by Raw Soul Express, "Where Is The Love" by Betty Wright, "Listen To My Heartbeat" by Little Beaver, "Human (Ryuhei The Man express 45 edit)" by Brief Encounter, "What Am I Gonna Do (Ryuhei The Man Miami 45 edit)" by Reid Inc, and "Be With Me (Ryuhei The Man Miami 45 edit)" by Milton Wright. Warren Baker with Paul Tanner & Andre MonteroMusic For Heavenly Bodies ... LP
Omega/Modern Harmonic, 1958. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
There's two sorts of heavenly bodies on the cover – but the real charms of the record lie inside, as the set's overflowing with incredible early theremin recordings! The album features spacey orchestral settings arranged by Warren Baker, and conducted by Andre Montero – plus fantastic work on the "electro theremin" by Paul Tanner – a different variation on the incredible post-war electronic instrument! The "electro theremin" was Tanner's own creation, and it works on a cool sliding principle that creates a lot of weird spacey dipping, turning, and soaring effects. The album's packaged in a lovingly heavy cover, with a nude "heavenly body" floating in space amidst a sea of bright colors! Titles include "Misty Moon Blues", "Out Of This World", "Holiday On Saturn", "20th Century Venus", and "Up To Jupiter". LP, Vinyl record album

Whit Boyd ComboDracula – The Dirty Old Man (with bonus DVD) ... CD
Modern Harmonic, 1969. New Copy ... $17.99 18.99
Dracula never sounded so funky – thanks to the mighty sounds of the Whit Boyd Combo! Boyd was a porn peddler in 60s Texas, but also cut a few great soundtracks for his smutty films – including this wonderful romp that's full of funky drums, heavy organ, off-tuned guitar, and even a bit of tenor from time to time – all with a vibe that's a bit like a Prestige Records combo being let loose to score some b-grade film for the grindhouse scene! Some tracks are short, others are nice and long – and the music is nicely rough around the edges, with occasional production touches to make things sound spooky – but a nicely strong soul jazz vibe at the core. Titles include "Chase Music For Girl In A Cave", "Music Number Five", "Dracula The Dirty Old Man Theme", "Fast Music Trailer", and "Peppy Music For A Dating Scene". CD features four more tracks "Music Number Four", "Three Minutes Of Love Music", "Six Minutes Of Music To Make Love By", and "Dracula's Close Up". CD

Jack Bongo BurgerEnd On Bongos (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Hi Fi/Modern Harmonic, 1957. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
A sweet set from that great record moment when Latin styles were coming into play with the hipper sounds of the bachelor pad world! Jack "Bongo" Burger was a west coast percussionist with a very similar style to Jack "Mr Bongo" Costanzo – and in fact, since they're both named Jack, and have a bongo middle name, we always wonder whether or not they're the same person! Whatever the case, this album's a tasty batch of bongo-heavy tracks – with a style that's similar to some of Costanzo's work on Liberty, although perhaps with slightly less of a Latin bent. The group includes Buddy Collette on flute and sax, plus piano, trumpet, electric bass, and some nice odd percussion. Kind of like a combo of some of Collette's jazz work, and the exotic stuff that was also appearing on the Hi Fi label. Tracks include "Jordu", "China Nights Mambo", "Negre Setin", "Chiu Chiu", and "Mambo Burger". LP, Vinyl record album

Larry Cartell/Nicholas CarrasGirl In Gold Boots – Original Soundtrack (gold vinyl pressing – with DVD) ... LP
Glenolden/Modern Harmonic, 1968. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
A very groovy soundtrack to a very groovy movie – a near-lost 60s exploitation flick that's got it all – biker gangs, go-go girls, and lots of mod rocking numbers to really fit the scene! The album's got a fair bit of straight 60s rock numbers – the kind of offbeat tunes you'd hear on some of those excellent AIP soundtracks from the same time – with vocals from Larry Cartell, and a mix of modes that moves between upbeat go-go tracks and moodier blue-tinged numbers – blended both with some larger arrangements that are in a more familiar soundtrack style, done by Nicholas Carras – and a few bits of dialog from the film – which spices things up in a very cool way! Titles include "Girl In Gold Boots", "Sin", "Knockin Boots", "My Carless Heart", "Everything I Touch Turned To Gold", "Do You want To Laugh Or Cry", "That's The Fool In Me", and "Jimmy's Girl". Very cool package – great graphics, and a bonus DVD of the film! LP, Vinyl record album
