Clyde McPhatterLove Ballads ... LP
Atlantic, Late 50s. Very Good ... $29.99
A great album of mellower ballads that showcase Clyde McPhatter's richly emotional style of singing, one that's on a par with his lead vocal work in The Drifters, and recorded here in a very similar mode! And sure, they're ballads – but they've got a great deep soul edge – as you'll hear on titles that include "Heartaches", "Come What May", Love Has Joined Us Together", and "Let Me Know". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red and purple label pressing – nice and clean. Cover has a small cutout hole, but is nice too.)

World Saxophone QuartetDances & Ballads ... CD
Nonesuch, 1987. Used ... $2.99 4.99
One of the best albums ever recorded by the WSQ – a sensitive mix of rhythmic tunes and mellow ballads, played by the group with less agression than on previous releases, but in a way that shows that they're really fitting into the style of the ensemble well. Titles include "Cool Red", "Full Deep & Mellow", "Dance Until Dawn", "Fast Life", "Hattie Wall", and "Sweet D". CD

John ColtraneCrescent (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Impulse, 1964. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $36.99 38.99
Sharp-edged John Coltrane at his best – a record that we'd rank right up there with Love Supreme, and which is a key transition point in Coltrane's musical ideas! There's a very strong edge to Coltrane's tone here – and even on the mellower ballads, he plays with a sound not always heard before – a quality that's bristlingly modern, and which really opens up on some of the longer numbers on the set. Rhythm is by the classic quartet with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and the sound is always pushing the boundaries towards new ideas, but always keeps nicely inside throughout! Titles include "Crescent", "Wise One", "Lonnie's Lament", and "The Drum Thing". LP, Vinyl record album
(Part of the excellent Acoustic Sounds series – beautiful heavy vinyl and cover!)

CommodoresHeroes ... LP
Motown, 1980. Very Good Gatefold ... $2.99
The Commodores tenth album – as you might guess from the big X on the cover – and a set that features some of the last great moments of Lionel Richie with the group! The album's a bit overlooked, but has a really great groove – kind of a middle ground between The Commodores' heavier funk and mellower ballads – served up here with the tight instrumentation that always made the group a self-contained standout – and arranged and produced to perfection by the great James Anthony Carmichael. Richie's lead is strong, but understated too – and titles include "Old Fashion Love", "Heroes", "Sorry To Say", "All The Way Down", "Wake Up Children", "Mighty Spirit", and "Celebrate". DelfonicsDelfonics ... CD
Buddah/Philly Groove, 1970. Used ... $4.99
The third album in an amazing early run from The Delfonics – the kind of work that set a whole new standard for group soul in the 70s! A number of the tracks here had already risen to fame before the album's release as singles – and these are mixed with some additional tracks that are woven together in a near-perfect symphony of sound! The mighty Thom Bell arranged most of the numbers here – save for 2 by Anthony Dorsey – and the group's heavenly harmonies are in amazing form on both mellow ballads and a few more righteous numbers. Titles include "Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time", "Funny Feeling", "Over & Over", "Baby I Love You", "When You Get Right Down To It", "Delfonics Theme", "Trying To Make A Fool Of Me", "I Gave To You", "Down Is Up Up Is Down", and "Think About Me". Earth Wind & FireMillennium ... CD
Warner, 1993. Used ... $4.99
Earth Wind & Fire cut this one a few years before the actual turn of the century – but that's a-ok with us, because Maurice White & company were always years ahead of their time! The record steps nicely off the modes used by EWF during the 80s – the tighter, more focused approach to the groove that showed up on their later Columbia sides, but which was still quite a bit better than most of their contemporaries – especially the legions of groups who grew up to copy their sound through the years! Production and percussion are a bit 90s-sounding, but surprisingly undated years later – thanks to a continuing commitment to righteous themes and jazz-based flourishes in the tunes – as well as some nice use of kalimba interludes to give the record occasional earthy moments! Philip Bailey still holds sway on some of the mellower ballads – and titles include "Even If You Wonder", "Sunday Morning", "Blood Brothers", "Divine", "Honor The Magic", "Super Hero", "Just Another Lonely Night", "Love Across The Wire", and "Chicago Blues". Terumasa HinoBlue Smiles (SHMCD pressing) ... CD
Somethin Else/Universal (Japan), 1992. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A record that certainly makes us smile – as it's got the fantastic cornet of Terumasa Hino in a group that features Cedar Walton on piano, David Williams on bass, and Michael Carvin on drums – all working together as almost a "Walton plus one" sort of date – but with specially sparkling solos from the leader! The mix of Walton and Hino is one that we never would have thought possible 20 years before – but here, the maturing players come together wonderfully with energy that's very intuitive, as they make their way through the set of mellow ballads you might expect from the title. Tunes include the original "Blue Smiles", plus "Alfie", "My Funny Valentine", "Smile", "You Are So Beautiful", "Unforgettable", and "My One & Only Love". CD

Wynton KellyIt's All Right (SHMCD pressing) ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1964. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99 About April 24, 2024 (delayed)
A tight little groover from Wynton Kelly – one of a few mid 60s gems done for Verve in a style that's harder-hitting and more focused than some of Kelly's other work! The record's got an approach that's a bit pop, but plenty darn soulful too – a style that focuses the already-great Kelly approach to the keys, and brings it into territory explored by Ramsey Lewis and Ray Bryant – kicking up the rhythms with lots of playful touches, including extra guitar by Kenny Burrell and conga from Candido, and even an added steel band on one number! The record's got a few mellower ballads that recall the lyrical Kelly mode of the past – but most is upbeat and very grooving – with titles that include "South Seas", "Not A Tear", "It's All Right", "Kelly Roll", "Moving Up", and "Escapade". P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 44.99
One of the rarest soul records of the 70s – recorded in Germany by a bunch of American servicemen on leave, but with a sound that's right out of the Chicago or Detroit groove of the pre-disco years! The group's great with both the funky and soulful material – hitting hard with monster groovers like "Holes In My Shoes" and the jazzy break classic "Windy C", and keeping it sweet and mellow on ballads like "My Little Someone" and "Boarding Pass". The album's got a great sound overall – almost like some of the jazzy soul albums on Fantasy from the mid 70s – and the quality of the vocals and instrumentation is great throughout. Titles include "I Love You", "Bet You Say You Want To Make It With Me", "No More City, No More Country", and "You Keep Me Coming Back". LP, Vinyl record album

A huge change from the early sound of The Stylistics – as the group have moved to Philly International, and are really shining in the light of the Gamble & Huff galaxy! The album's got a lot more grooves than before, but still offers up plenty of space for the trademark mellow ballads that made The Stylistics a genre-transforming group on the east coast scene – coming across here with those beautiful harmonies of the first few records, but also a bit more maturity, and confidence too. An all-star effort from The Temptations – and a well-titled set that has the group brimming over with classic vocal talent! The group's expanded to a seven-piece outfit for the album – with Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin back in the fold, singing alongside Dennis Edwards, Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, and the rest of the group! Motown also culled together some top-shelf production talent for the set too – including Berry Gordy, Rick James, Barrett Strong, and Smokey Robinson – all of whom produce numbers for the record. Some of the tracks are in an 80s groove modes, and others are mellower ballads that offer plenty of space for vocal interplay – and titles include "I've Never Been To Me", "Backstage", "More On The Inside", "Standing On The Top", "Lock It In The Pocket", and "You Better Beware". The first album by Atlantic Starr – a tight set of modern soul tunes with a very different feel than their later work! Part of the credit goes to Bobby Eli – who arranged and produced the set, giving it a feel that's almost late Philly – tight, sophisticated, and right on the money at all the best points! There's a number of sweet mellow ballads with lead vocals by Sharon Bryant, and other tracks that groove in an uptempo way that points towards more of the group's 80s work – a great mix of modes that makes for a really well-developed album right out of the gate. A pivotal album for The Commodores – still very funky here, with a sound that stays true to their roots – yet also able to reach out into some of the mature mellow ballads that would make them a huge crossover act in years to come! James Carmichael arranges and produces here – really helping the group to find that key focus, and make some important use of the vocals of Lionel Richie. Mr R steps out strongly on the crossover hit "Three Times A Lady" – but the whole group more than holds their own on the funky killers "X Rated Movie", "Fire Girl", and "I Like What You Do" – as well as the great mellow groover "Say Yeah". Philly Groove/Kent (UK), 1970/1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sublime soul through and through – 2 classics from The Delfonics, back to back on a single CD! First up is self-titled record The Delfonics – the third album in an amazing early run from The Delfonics – the kind of work that set a whole new standard for group soul in the 70s! Tell Me This Is A Dream has The Delfonics just getting better and better! The longer the group recorded, the more they picked up this strange spacey quality that pushed them past some of their contemporaries of the early 70s. And on an album like this, they prove that they're way more than just Thom Bell puppets by showing that they have a rich talent for a wide variety of complicated arrangements that really push the vocal group sound of the 70s. They take many stylistic risks, coming up with really sinister new harmonies, and always managing to stay clear of the cliches that buried some of their mates on the charts. Bell still arranges some of the material, but the record also features work by Norman Harris and Caldwell MacMillan, who did the real genius work on the record. This masterpiece includes the sublime "Hey, Love", plus "Walk Right Up to the Sun", "I'm A Man", "Too Late", "Love You Till I Die", "Looking for a Girl", and "Round & Round". CD

Blue Note, 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
A very nice recent album by Jackie, featuring a stripped-down lineup that includes Cedar Walton on piano and Billy Higgins on drums, joining Jackie in a haunting set of mellow ballads. After years of playing, Jackie's tone is impeccable, and it's great to hear him work through a set of standards like the ones on this album – "Star Eyes", "Nature Boy", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and "You Don't Know What Love Is". Sure, the album's not as groundbreaking as some of Jackie's 60s new thing records, or 70s spiritual sessions, but it's still a nice treat, and has a surprisingly compelling edge to it. CD

✨✧ One WayOne Way Featuring Al Hudson (1980) ... LP
MCA, 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from Al Hudson and One Way – a set that still has the group bristling with loads of funky energy – yet also hitting a groove that's wonderfully smooth as well! One Way were really one of the top of the larger funk combos of the time – and this set's a great illustration of the way they were able to perfectly balance all their different components, and come up with a sound that was lean, mean, and right on the money! Vocals shift a bit from track to track, as does the groove – and although things are upbeat, they're also never disco at all – nor too "fake funk" either. Some moments echo the coming style of 80s groove, but there's also a deeper soul feel overall, too – especially heard in the mellower ballads, which are as great as the uptempo numbers. Titles include "Something In the Past", "Do Your Thang", "Pop It", "I Wanna Be With You", "You're The One", and "Copy This". LP, Vinyl record album

A bit of a change from previous Ozone albums – a set that still has plenty of bass at the bottom, but also a fair bit of keyboards as well – stretching out nicely over the top, almost with a bit of an electro pop feel at points! The keys really make for a catchy sort of edge – not just the usual bassy soul from Rick James-era Motown, but a slightly more complicated vibe that's really trying for something new at times. The set also features a few mellower ballads that are surprisingly great – sensitive moments we wouldn't have guessed from the group – and titles include "You Don't Want My Love", "I Can't Wait", "Glasses", "Strutt My Thang", and "Don't Leave Me Now". It's not really fair to say that Coltrane's playing for lovers on this one, because the album's not a concept project designed to aid bachelors in the success of their romantic endeavors, so much as it is a collection of warm mellow ballads recorded by Trane during the late 50s for Prestige. A key moment in the career of Gladys Knight & The Pips – and a record that opens the group up to a whole new sound for the 70s! When Gladys Knight started out as a raw R&B-ish singer in the early 60s, nobody would have expected her to have such staying power – and to become one of the 70s best interpreters of mellow ballads. This album's more than proof that Knight had plenty of staying power, and the title hit "Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)" went onto become one of the decade's biggest mellow soul tracks. It's backed up here by a number of nice tracks that have a harder soul sound, and which are arranged by some of Motown's best talents of the early 70s. The sound is pretty darn soulful – tracks that range from modal groovers to mellow ballads, all sung by Ann with a really rich vocal approach, and backed up with lightly dancing notes that give the album a really classic feel. The whole thing reminds us a lot of some of the best Lorez Alexandria work from the 70s – with a similar talent for hitting strong notes, and working in some great bass next to the vocals. Titles include a jazz dancer version of "Speak Low", plus "Old Devil Moon", "Don't Explain", "I Only Have Eyes For You", "Autumn In New York", and "It Might As Well Be Spring". Now Again, Late 60s/1970s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Mellow soul heaven – and one of the greatest compilations of this style we've ever heard! This is exactly the kind of laidback, tripped-out soul we totally love – a host of rare ballads and love songs pulled from the 45 underground of the late 60s and early 70s – sometimes by groups who are better known for funky tracks, other times by overlooked harmony groups and solo singers who rival the greatness of east coast artists like The Moments or Whatnauts! Titles include "I Don't Think I'll Ever Love Another" by Darling Dears, "Slippin Around" by Thomas East, "Since You've Been Gone" by Little Janice, "Love" by Black Conspirators, "What Am I Waiting For" by Black Exotics, "Who Do You Think You're Fooling (part 1)" by Symphonic Four, "I'll Find A True Love" by Lee Bonds, "Young Girl" by Jazzie Cazzie & The Eight Sounds, and "Is It Me You Really Love" by Black Velvet. Chi Sound, 1980. Very Good+ ... $7.99
Really sweet later work from The Chi Lites – proof that the group were still going strong long after their initial chart hits! The sound here is less Brunswick Chicago soul than before – and the group step along in warm and sophisticated backings that sparkle in the best Chi-Sound style – uptempo at some times, but sweet and mellow at others. The vocals are superb – easily adaptable to both sorts of settings, but especially great on the ballads – which really seem to benefit from the move away from some of the more cliched styles that the Chi-Lites were falling into during their last years on Brunswick. Eugene Record produced, and titles include "Love Shock", "Round & Round", "Heavenly Body", "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You", "Give Me A Dream", and a remake of "Have You Seen Her". CommodoresNightshift ... LP
Motown, 1985. Sealed ... $14.99
By this point in their career, The Commodores have lost Lionel Richie and any sort of funk credibility they had from their early years – but they also somehow manage to reemerge with a great new talent for a sweet mellow groove! The title tune "Nightshift" was one of those tracks that crossed over massively at the time – but to our ears, it also kind of redeemed the group too – as it's got a surprisingly soulful quality that really got the group past the soppiness of their ballads and love songs – gliding along with an almost-righteous quality that makes it a nice later cap to an earlier Motown 70s groove. Other tunes on the album don't always fare as well, but there's still some nice moments here – tunes that benefit from some Dennis Lambert production and hit just the right kind of mellow groove to follow up on the spirit of the single. Tracks include "Nightshift", "Slip Of The Tongue", "Lay Back", "Lightin Up The Night", and "The Woman In My Life". LP, Vinyl record album

GQDisco Nights ... LP
Arista, 1979. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Not just disco nights, but some great mellow moments too – a wonderfully well-rounded classic from this great quartet – as tight and groovy as it is cool and classy! By the time of this debut, the group had already had plenty of 70s soul experience as The Rhythm Makers – a previous name for the lineup, and a combo with a great reputation for dancefloor grooves that were tight, but never too uptight – kind of the best funky soul styles of the time! This album definitely continues that tradition, with a sound that's leaner than most mainstream disco of the time – and really well put-together, in a way that also has them slowing down to hit some great ballads and mellower steppers too. The album features the massive disco title cut – "Disco Nights" – and a beautiful reworking of Billy Stewart's classic "I Do Love You" – with a sound that's faithful to the original, but a sweet stepping groove that's made it a favorite for years! Other cuts include "Boogie Oogie Oogie", "Spirit", "Make My Dreams A Reality", "It's Your Love", "I Do Love You", and "Wonderful". LP, Vinyl record album

Excellent work from this smooth Chicago vocal group! The album may well be the best the group ever recorded – and it features some stellar ballad work produced with a nice spacey tone, almost in a Rose Royce mellow mode – by Jerry Butler's Fountain Productions team and by Clarence Johnson, who brought the group up from the beginning! The real strength of the album, though, is the group's vocals – wonderfully harmonious, but with a rougher edge and a deeper soul than many other 70s groups of the same type. The album includes the massive semi-hit "Guess Who's Back In Town" – plus other good ballads like "How Do You Think You're Gonna Find Love", "Let's Work It Out", and "Distant Melody". A sweet SoCal groover from Cecil Lyde – recorded in LA in the early 80s, with a great mix of funky club and mellow soul modes! Cecil's got a great ear for the grittier side of California funk at the time – tunes that still use the heavy bass and keyboards of mainstream work from the period, but which manages to make the grooves come out with a lot more punch, and a heck of a lot of feeling – a bit like some of the best indie club that was still coming out of the New York underground. The ballads are great too – with a spacier, more laidback feel that shows a warmer, more seductive side of Cecil's vocals – one that balances nicely with the bolder sound of the funk numbers, in a way that almost reminds us of Bootsy in the late 70s, but a lot less polished overall! Pacific Jazz (Japan), 1961. Used ... $11.99
A pretty great set from Les McCann – and quite a bit different than some of his other work of the time! This one's sub-billed as "the ballad style of Les McCann" – but it features Les playing these laidback, mellow numbers that are way different than most jazz ballads of the time – almost darkly modern moments that draw a lot from rich tones and gentle chromes – of the sort we've hardly ever heard McCann play this way, and which almost hint at some of the gentler touch he'd use on the keys during the Fender Rhodes generation – even though this one's recorded a decade before. Backing is equally thoughtful and sensitive – with Herbie Lewis on bass and Ron Jefferson on drums – and titles include two originals – "Pretty Lady" and "Dorene Don't Cry I" – plus "Django", "Stella By Starlight", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Ill Take Romance", and "Little Girl Blue". Impulse, 1965. Used ... $2.99
A tremendous little album from Sonny Rollins – one of his most sharp-edged sessions of the mid 60s, and a bold departure from some of his previous work for RCA! The album has a crackling sense of energy that more than lives up to the exclamation point in the title – a starker quality than some of Sonny's earlier records, and one that brings out some sharper tones in his horn, even on the mellower numbers. The rhythm support is loose, but somewhat soulful and spontaneous – and features Ray Bryant on piano, Walter Booker on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums – an unusual pairing for Sonny, but that's what makes them so great. In a way, the album's almost Rollins' equivalent of John Coltrane's earlier Ballads album for Impulse – in that it includes familiar tunes, but remade into completely new numbers by the sound of the leader. Columbia, 1964. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of those key cases where Miles Davis took a familiar song and made it his own! The set's a live one, and features a famous 15 minute version of "My Funny Valentine" – played by Davis in a spacious, open sort of way – and one that has key hints of the modernism to come in his music, yet still rings out with some of his more easygoing late 50s appeal. The group here features George Coleman on tenor alongside the rhythm section of Herbie Hancock piano, Ron Carter bass, and Tony Williams on drums – all three of whom help Davis edge into darker territory, even when things are ostensibly sweet! Apart from the version of "My Funny Valentine", other titles include "All Blues", "All Of You", "I Thought About You", and "Stella By Starlight". Four & More is breakneck live work from Miles Davis – and proof that his famous 60s quintet wasn't only just about mellow and spacious sounds! The set was recorded at the same concert as the album My Funny Valentine – and while that one's mostly ballads, this one's mostly high tempo numbers that skip along with incredible ease – crackling with modern touches on the rhythm from Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – and featuring some really excellent work by George Coleman on tenor sax! Leon Pendarvis handled most of the arrangements – and the record's got a wonderfully full soul sound – with a mix of moody keyboard-driven groovers and ballads – all topped by excellent vocals from Lou, miles ahead of any work he did in the early days! The best thing, though, is the songwriting, as these tracks rank right up there with the best underground mellow soul we can think of – sophisticated yet not soppy, filled with soulful lyrics about love and losing it, never giving into cliches of other soul from the time. Titles include "Green Dolphin Street", "Three Little Words", "Hold Em Joe", "The Blue Room", plus "Alfie's Theme". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jimmy SmithOther Side Of Jimmy Smith ... LP
MGM, 1970. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The other side of Jimmy Smith is a mellow side – as this album's nearly all ballads and standards, set to moody late night orchestrations by Johnny Pate. Jimmy's playing is very very nice – and in a relaxed introspective mode that he hadn't really been allowed since some of his Blue Note sessions. Pate's got more of rep for funk and soul, but he does a pretty nice job here – and Jerome Richardson plays some nice flute on many tracks. Titles include "My Romance", "Nobody Knows", "My Way", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?", and "Bewitched". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Johnnie TaylorNew Day ... LP
Columbia, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Massive, massive music from the great Johnnie Taylor – a set that's way beyond his early work on Stax, and even his disco hits of the 70s – but in a way that's even better than before! The album makes use of two great producers – Brad Shapiro for side one, and Don Davis for side two – both talents who have this way of mixing Taylor's deep soul vocals with some warmer modern soul modes – but at a level that moves way beyond cliche or commercial modes – with Johnnie as equally captivating on the mellow cuts as he is on the ballads. In a world where so many collectors are always digging for these completely obscure indie sides from the time, folks would do well to take note that the real gems are often on major labels like this – just lost in the shuffle next to the artists bigger hits. Titles include "Syliva", "Sneakin Sneakin", "I Wanna Get Into You", "I'd Rather Hurt Myself", and "The Heart Break Kid". LP, Vinyl record album

One of our favorite albums by The Whispers – a later gem with some really great songs, and a sound that shows the group strongly moving into hit territory! In some way, the album's almost a return to the mellow harmony soul of the group's roots – slowing down the pace from the disco years to craft some extremely great ballads and midtempo numbers. There's still a bunch of great club tracks too – like the classic "And The Beat Goes On" – but in a way, our favorite tracks are the mellower ones, like "Lady", "I Love You", and the sublime, "A Song For Donny", a tribute to the late Donny Hathaway, written around the music of his classic "This Christmas". One of the most sensitively soulful records of the 70s from pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto – a set that still has him working in a trio format, but which also has a slightly more mellow feel overall – with some especially great work from the leader on the ballads! Yamamoto's style is maturing strongly here – and he's got this commanding spectrum of sound from the piano – gentle right hand passages and deep left hand lines – all nicely balanced with work from Tsutomo Okada on bass and Keiji Kishida on drums. Although Gene Chandler wasn't scoring nearly as big in the 80s as he was in the 60s, he was still a great vocalist, and could turn out some good material when he wanted to. This album's more than enough proof of that – and it features some good mellow tracks that have Gene singing in a sophisticated quiet storm sort of style. The best number is "Haven't I Heard That Line Before" – and other tracks include "You'll Never Be Free Of Me", "Lucy", and "Please You Tonight". The record's got some uptempo numbers that fall flat, so stick to the ballads and mellow cuts. LP, Vinyl record album

A warmly jazzy album from Gal Costa – much more so than you'd expect from her slightly creepy white face on the cover! There's a fair bit of keyboards in the instrumentation – usually stepping around with a relatively mellow feel, which lets Gal concentrate on ballads and gently soulful numbers – all put together by a variety of arrangers who include Lincoln Olivetti, Paulo Ramiro, Luizinho Avelar, and Cleberson Horst. The sound is light years from the Tropicalia generation, but Gal more than proves herself to be a good interpreter in any situation. Hank Crawford takes a decidedly mellower approach on this set – working with warm and wonderful arrangements by Marty Paich, in a series of soulful readings of familiar ballads and love songs – all of which come out in a dreamy late night mode! There's still a fair bit of Ray Charles soul in the set overall – no surprise, considering Hank's roots in Charles band – and it's almost a Charles-like sound that Paich seems to be conjuring for the set – slightly bluesy undercurrents, which offer Hank some great space to voice his own solos on the alto sax. ✨✧ Fantastic FourGot To Have Your Love/BYOF (Bring Your Own Funk) ... CD
Westbound (UK), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of albums from this overlooked Detroit soul group – back to back on a single CD! On Got To Have Your Love, Fantastic Four are a hell of a harmony group – and one who still hold strong through this second chapter of their career – by avoiding any of the cheaper cliches of some of the groups of the disco generation! Instead, the album focuses on their vocals first, and any sort of grooves second – which makes for some wonderful mellower cuts that really follow the spirit of some of the hippest 70s group soul from Chicago or the east coast – followed by a few upbeat tracks that get handling by Tom Moulton at Sigma Sound in Philly! The balance is great – almost more like some of the best group sides from a few years before, especially Blue Magic – and the ballads really take center stage, and blow us away with the group's deeper currents of soul. Titles include "Mixed Up Moods & Attitudes", "There's Fire Down Below", "I Got To Have Your Love", "She'll Be Right For Me", "Cash Money", and "Disco Pool Blues". On BYOF, the Fantastic Four definitely bring their own funk – thanks to tight help from arranger Dennis Coffey, who also produced the set with a heavy groove that's like his own work of the time! The basslines are stronger than before for the FF – but their harmonies are very firmly intact – and, if anything, the blend of funk and great vocals really makes the album a charmer right from the get-go – especially as they aim more for midtempo steppers than too-upbeat disco tunes that might have them losing some of their charm. The overall vibe is maybe more 1974 than 1978 – and titles include "I Just Want To Love Ya Baby", "BYOF", "Cold & Windy Night", "Sexy Lady", "Shout", "Super Lover", and "Realize". CD

A smooth batch of early work from Brazilian jazz and vocal mainstay Dick Farney – a collection of his wonderful vocal tunes and more jazz based work from the mid 40s through the mid 50s – collected from ultra rare releases of the time! The first half of the CD concentrates on his wonderful vocal tunes – steeped in mellow, expressive tunes ranging from stripped down piano and vocal ballads and some more lush material with strings. Dick's doesn't get his vocal props in our half of the globe – and here's hoping sets like this will spread the word! Titles include "Copabana", "Marina", "Uma Loura", "Nick Bar", "Mundo Distaste", "Perdido De Amor", "Tereza Da Praia" (Dick Farney & Lucio Alves), "Grand Verdade" and more. The 9 tracks that close out the CD concentrate on his jazzier side, with Dick on piano with his Quintet on the tracks "O Genio Da Marly", "Fique Calma", "Nervosinho" and more; the Dick Farney Quartet works the Gershwin songbook with "Strike Up The Band", "Oh Lady Be Good", Bt Not For Me" and "I've Got Rhythm". A nicely mellow album from blue-eyed soul veteran James Hunter – still done with the same deep soul currents as his other Daptone records, but slowed down a peg and with a nice focus on ballads and love songs! There's a moody, late nite vibe going on at some of the best moments – almost in the territory of early 60s uptown soul by singers like Jerry Butler or Clyde McPhatter during his Mercury Records years – but given a different spin with the leaner instrumentation of the group – who get the best sort of Daptone treatment in the studio, with a raw edge that really makes Hunter sound great! All tracks are originals, penned with almost a Sam Cooke sort of vibe – and titles include "I Don't Wanna Be Without You", "Something's Calling", "It Was Gonna Be You", "This Is Where We Came In", "He's Your Could've Been", "Mm Hmm", "Heartbreak", and "Who's Fooling Who". A sweet 80s groover from KC and his Sunshine Band – a set that's got the group sounding a lot different than during their Miami hit years of the 70s – but still every bit as groovy! The style is more 80s funk than before – a bit more emphasis on the keyboards, and basslines that rocked straight through the grooves – and Wayne "KC" Casey's voice often uses that cool level of processing you'll know from his hits, but in a wider range that even makes for some unusual moments on the mellower cuts and the ballads. Overall, there's still lots of sunshine in the mix – that ebullient atmosphere that always made KC and the group so great – and titles include "Don't Run", "Give It Up", "You'd Gimme Some More", ""When You Dance To The Music", and "You're Going Out Of Your Mind". The set's got a nice balance of groovers and mellower moments – really showing the growing diversity of O'Neal as an artist, as he tries to move away from some of his bigger ballads. The rhythms are often handled by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis – who themselves are going for a leaner style than in the 80s, yet still have that undeniable funky punch in the mix! At tines, Alexander's not leading the songs so much as stepping into the grooves – but at other times, he comes as the strong singer that first emerged in the mid 80s. Lead vocalist Levi Ruffin stretches out nicely on a few more laidback cuts – not the most classic soul of his time, but with sensitivity that's greater than his handling of the simpler lyrics on the groovers here. Ruffin composed two of these ballads – "Feel Good Bout Yourself" and "Lovin You Is Easy" – and other tracks include "Tin Soldier", "Keep Love Happy", "Ganja", "Freaky", and a cover of The Kinks' "All Day & All Of The Night". Great proof of this is the mellow cut "Computer Love" – a slow stepper that has the group showing their sweeter side, but never losing their cool – a bit like some of the best Fatback ballads of the early 80s. ✨✧ Kool & The GangLadies' Night/Celebrate/Something Special/As One/In The Heart/Emergency (3CD set) ... CD
BGO (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A massive package of work from the mighty Kool & The Gang – 6 full albums from the 80s, served up here in a 3CD set! First up is Ladies Night – a shameless dancefloor cash-in move – but a record that's still pretty darn great as well! You all know the big title cut "Ladies Night", so we won't bother to describe it – but we can say that the group wisely hooked up with Deodato, who produced, mixed, and even played keyboards on the album. Deodato keeps a nice jazzy punch in the tracks, while still moving towards the slickly produced funk sound that was the group's main approach at the time of the record. JT Taylor's on vocals, and the album's even got a few mellow cuts – like the crossover easy number "Too Hot" – amidst the midtempo 80s grooves that really step out and make the whole thing move. Other tracks include "Ladies Night", "Hangin Out", "Tonight's The Night", "If You Feel Like Dancin", and "Got You Into My Life". The next album is Something Special indeed – as the album was one of the biggest hits for Kool & The Gang, and showed that the group still had plenty of energy left to groove into the 80s! The record features production work by Brazilian music maestro Eumir Deodato – who by this point had become a sweet and smooth talent with a real flair for putting over a modern soul groove! Deodato's approach is really great – smooth, yet soulful, without any tricks or gimmicks – and a real appreciation for lead vocals and a catchy little hook! The album features the group's party classic "Get Down On It", plus "Steppin Out", "No Show", "Pass It On", "Be My Lady", "Take My Heart", and "Good Time Tonight". As One is solid 80s grooving from Kool & The Gang – a group who inspired so many others in the early 80s soul generation, but who could still do it better than most of the rest! The style here is tight and smooth, but never too slick – and Deodato's giving the group some really great production for the album – helping them to focus their energy and soar soulfully, but without resorting to any stiff gimmicks or cliches! There's a great groove running through most of the numbers here – a confident quality that's never too commercial, and which bubbles along nicely throughout. Titles include "Street Kids", "Big Fun", "As One", "Hi De Hi Hi De Ho", "Let's Go Dancin", and "Pretty Baby". In The Heart is a sweet set that's part of a big early 80s run from Kool & The Gang – a time that saw the funk legends really hitting the mainstream, and winning over a huge new audience in the process! Given that the Gang virtually invented ensemble funk at the start of the 70s, they're perfectly poised here to move into modes that so many of their younger competition were trying – but never did so well – that blend of 80s elements and more sharply-fused funk instrumentation, all honed down into a tightly snapping groove. The real surprise, though, is the group's growing ability for ballads – which put records like this into hands of folks who never would have dug their funk a few years before. And while we might have had a few problems with that shift at the time, the passage of years has got the whole thing sounding pretty darn great to our ears – especially in comparison to so much weaker work from the time. Titles include "In The Heart", "Joanna", "Tonight", "Straight Ahead", "September Love", "You Can Do It", and "Home Is Where The Heart Is". Last up is Emergency – one of the key classics from the second chapter of the group – when their lineup and sound were a lot leaner than before, and they managed to cross over big to a much wider audience than before! The upbeat cuts show that the group were still kings of the funky dancefloor – and the mellower ones are equally great too – showing a rising ballad style that proved to be the group's big crossover card at the time – a way of putting over a laidback track, but with plenty of soul. This approach is heard to great effect on the album's great single "Cherish" – and other tracks include "Bad Woman", "Surrender", "Emergency", "Misled", "Fresh", and "You Are The One". CD

An excellent album of smooth soul tracks, and maybe Van's best record of the 70s! The record shows Van sitting at the piano in an intimate setting – ala Barry White – and it's got a similar Love Unlimited Orchestra approach, with much large backing behind Van's voice, and a very full instrumental sound. Van sings lead vocals, which aren't always that great – but he more than makes up for it with some great piano and keyboard work, and some wonderful soul songwriting and arranging that recall his best uptown moments of the late 60s. The record has a few uptempo hustle-type tracks, but they're all pretty darn great soul songs, and there's loads of great mellow soul moments woven in to make the record a nice album of ballads and groovers. Diana Ross makes a big break with Motown for this debut set on RCA – a set that also has the singer making a nice stylistic break as well! The set's got Diana reinventing herself in so many different modes for the 80s – as Ross herself is sitting at the production helm for the record, and does a surprisingly good job of leading the way through a nicely different blend of styles! The set begins with a reworking of the old Frankie Lymon hit "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" – maybe going more retro than Ross ever did in the past – but things quickly step back into the 80s with a range of mellow groovers and ballads that still show that Diana's at the top of her game, vocally – and album to find ways of moving past any of her older, more familiar modes. Arrangements are by Ray Chew, Leon Pendarvis, Rob Mounsey, and Ron frangipane – and titles include "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", "Endless Love", "It's Never Too Late", "Sweet Nothings", "Two Can Make It", "Work That Body", "Mirror Mirror", and "Sweet Surrender". ✨✧ VariousStudio One Rocksteady – Rocksteady, Soul, & Early Reggae At Studio One ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Great early work from the legendary Studio One – and some important sounds that really show the link between Jamaican reggae and American soul! The grooves at this point draw heavily from the US soul and R&B that had been hitting Jamaican shores via radio broadcasts from up north – but they also already have a Kingston influence coming heavily into the mix – in the stepping rhythms, bubbling instrumentation, and mellow production of the cuts! The instrumentation here is wonderful – lots of special little touches on organ, tenor, bass, or drums – in that key Studio One way – and the vocals have a flow that really works well with the echoey production on most numbers too. A few tunes show some early social and political themes – and titles include "Stars" by The Eternals, "Joy In The Morning" by The Gaylads, "My Ambition" by Marcia Griffith, "Throw Me Corn" by Larry & Alvin, "Lick It Back" by Duke Morgan, "Pack Up" by The Classics, "Fancy Make Up" by John Holt, "Whisper To Me" by Cecile Campbell, "Hurting Me" by Alton Ellis, "Our Thing" by Jackie Mittoo, and "Row Fisherman Row" by Wailing Souls. ✨✧ DynamicsWhat A Shame (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Black Gold/Solid (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A bit sweet soul, a bit funky – and a real indie soul classic from the early 70s! The album's the second from The Dynamics – a group from Detroit, but one who work here with a style that's much more in the east coast mode of the All Platinum/Stang generation! The production is nice and mellow on the best cuts – fragile, but never sloppy – and the vocals really dominate nicely on the ballads, sliding forward with a really mellow late nite sound! The album does have one standout funk track, titled "Funkey Key", but most of the set is relatively mellow – and other tracks include "Count Your Chips", "You're The Only One", "Voyage Thru The Mind", "What A Shame", and "You'll Never Find A Man Like Me". CD features a lot of bonus tracks too – titles that include a few versions of "Beautiful Music", plus unreleased tracks "Get Myself High", "I'm Thinking", "Baby Baby I Love You", "Sweet Games Of Love", and "Let's Start All Over" – and original single versions of "Show The World" and "We're Gonna Be Together". ✨✧ Rose BrothersRose Brothers ... CD
Muscle Shoals Sound/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1985. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Modern Muscle Shoals material from The Rose Brothers – a male quartet with one foot in an older harmony soul mode, and the other firmly set into the bigger modes of the 80s! Mellower moments mix with electro elements on this debut album – with a vibe that's almost more east coast than Alabama, but which still retains a bit of a deeper soul vibe on the laidback numbers and ballads. Jimmy Lewis and Rich Cason produced – and Cason handled arrangements – on titles that include "I Get Off On You", "The Edge Of Goodbye", "Burglar", "One More Time", "War Zone", and "Freeky Lover" – and the Rick James-styled groover "Wall To Wall Freaks". BalladsGift Of Love ... LP
Venture/P-Vine (Japan), Late 1960s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 38.99 About September 18, 2024
West coast harmony soul genius – a full early album of work by The Ballads – a sweet soul group who really live up to their name! The tracks here are all mellow soul with a near-perfect quality – vocals that step and slide together in a gentle, heartfelt sort of way – never too slick, and always with a heartbreaking sound that rivals some of the better-known east coast examples of the genre. Production is by Willie Hutch, Leon Ware, and Clarence Paul – and the album's a super-rare effort from the mostly-singles Venture label – with tracks that include "Good Bless Our Love", "You're The One", "I Love You Yeah", "The Gift Of Love", "Weakspot", "Hey Diddle Diddle", and "Goodnight My Love". CD also features 9 more bonus tracks – including "Right Track (parts 1 & 2)", "I Can't See Your Love", "Do It Now", "I Love You Yeah", and "I Hope I Never Fall In Love". LP, Vinyl record album

MastersoundsBallads & Blues ... LP
World Pacific, 1959. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
The Mastersounds seem to take a page from the book of the MJQ – especially with a title like this – but as usual, the end results are a fair bit hipper! The album features the classic lineup with Buddy Montgomery on vibes, Monk Montgomery on electric bass, Richie Crabtree on piano, and Benny Barth on drums – all working through a batch of extremely mellow numbers that put Buddy's vibes right out front, ringing out with a clear, clean sound that cuts through any potential sleepiness. Titles include "Little Stevie", "Solar", "Monk's Ballad", "How Deep Is The Ocean", "One Mint Julep", and "The Champ". LP, Vinyl record album

Mark MurphySeptember Ballads (with bonus track) ... CD
Milestone, 1987. Used ... $7.99
Mellow ballad material from Mark Murphy – as you might expect from the title – a sad-tinged session that almost hints at the style of his recent work in Verve – showing a real maturity for Murphy's music at the time! There's a bit of electricity in the instrumentation – some keyboards and guitar – but the record's got a warm, mellow tone that mostly focuses on Mark's wonderful vocals – gently making their way through a well-chosen set of tunes that includes "September Fifteenth", "Night Life", "Sack Full Of Dreams", "Crystal Silence", "Sausalito", "Para Nada", "Spring Is Where You Are", "I Never Went Away", and "When She Is Mine". Art Farmer also plays some sweet solos on three of the album's tracks! CD

Archie SheppBallads For Trane (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Denon (Japan), 1977. Used ... $19.99
One of Archie Shepp's most fragile and most beautiful albums – a set of mellower tunes dedicated to John Coltrane, played on tenor and soprano sax with support from a trio that includes Albert Dailey on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums! The album's a real standout in Shepp's aging stretch – a session that's much more straight ahead than his earlier work, but which also benefits from his years of more exploratory blowing – experience that echoes out here in powerful notes and phrasings that he brings into the tunes at delightfully unexpected moments. As with Shepp's earlier Four For Trane album for Impulse, the sound here is not a copycat of Coltrane at all – but a fresh new vision that takes inspiration from the creativity of the master, and works with the same sense of soul and striving. Titles include "Soul Eyes", "You Don't Know What Love Is", "Wise One", "Where Are You", and "Theme For Ernie". CD
(Out of print early Japanese CD pressing .)
