✨✧ Free DesignUmbrellas ... CD
Siesta (Spain), Late 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Massively beautiful pop tunes by this incredibly harmony group! The Free Design have a sound and approach that's like nobody else – and at the end of the 60s, they looked over their shoulder, saw dozens of harmony groups who'd been working before them, and decided to strip the sound down and recraft it with child-like innocence. No wonder they've been a huge influence on loads of today's groovy bands – and on you too, we're sure, after you hear such dreamy tunes as "Butterflies Are Free", "Kites Are Fun", "You'll Be You & I'll Be Me", "Stay Another Season", "Happy Together", "Time & Love", "Like To Love", and "When Love Is Young". Jeb Bishop Trio/QuartetAfternoons ... CD
Okka Disk, 2001. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
One of the boldest statements on record from trombonist Jeb Bishop – and a really great reminder of his key contributions to the Chicago avant scene at the start of the century! Jeb's a master of subtle shape and sound on his instrument, but he can also play with a fiercer frenzy – which is definitely the case here, and he moves between a trio and quartet lineup – alongside Kent Kessler on bass, Tim Mulvenna on drums, and Jeff Parker on guitar! The match of Parker and Bishop happens on four of the album's seven tracks, and has an especially strong resonance – tuneful at times, fuzzier at others – although the trio tracks are pretty darn incredible, and have us really remembering the greatness of Kessler and Mulvenna too. Titles include "Mirror Image", "The Umbrella", "Piggly Wiggly", "Pond", and "Flex Time". CD

Dizzy GillespieBirk's Works – Verve Big Band Sessions ... CD
Verve, 1956/1957. Used 2 CDs ... $2.99
Seminal work from Dizzy – showing that he was a genius in any form of jazz! In the mid 50s, Diz had one of the hippest big bands going – filled with great young players that included Lee Morgan, Joe Gordon, Melba Liston, Benny Golson, Billy Mitchell, and Walter Davis Jr. The work he crafted here was partly an extension of his earlier bop sides, but also a demonstration of his desire to express himself in more expansive forms – kind of a hint of the direction he'd take in the 60s, with his work in Latin, soundtrack, and funk styles. The set combines tracks from 3 different Verve albums – and it also packages the material with a number of previously unissued tracks, and some great liner notes that do a wonderful job of summing up the spirit of the work. Arrangements are by AK Salim, Quincy Jones, Tadd Dameron, and Dizzy himself – and tracks include "Jordu", "Tin Tin Deo", "Groovin For Nat", "Dizzy's Business", "Jessica's Day", "Doodlin", "Yo No Quiero Bailar", "Birk's Works", "Tangorine", "Umbrella Man", and "Mayflower Rock". 42 tracks in all! ✨✧ Michel LegrandLes Demoiselles De Rochefort (Young Girls of Rochefort) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1966. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 24.99
One of our favorite soundtracks ever – a jazzy swinging ode to love found and love lost – all penned by the legendary Michel Legrand! The work was composed in collaboration with director Jacques Demy for his 1966 film of the same name – and, like the previous Demy/Legrand collaboration, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, the movie's a story in song – one that has much of the dialogue presented as sung lyrics to the tunes. The mode takes off from a Hollywood musical style, and pushes the genre into territory that's much hipper, very French, and with a soaring approach that's filled with plenty of mod 60s jazz grooves. Legrand's genius has never sparkled so brightly – and his ability to interweave different themes, stories, and grooves is simply amazing! Titles include "Chanson Des Jumelles", "Chanson De Delphine", "Nous Voyageons De Ville En Ville", "Chanson D'Andy", "La Femme Coupee En Morceaux", and "Marins Amis Amants Ou Maris" – plus lots of instrumental bonus tracks! CD

Webster LewisGive Me Some Emotion – The Epic Anthology 1976 to 1981 ... LP
Epic/Expansion (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $34.99 39.99
The hands of Webster Lewis are on a classic Fender Rhodes on the cover – and you'll hear plenty of that instrument on this collection, along with all the other many keyboards that Lewis can handle so well! Webster started out as a straighter jazzman in his early years, but by the time of these tracks he was at the top of his game in the world of soulful fusion – picking up a torch first lit by Herbie Hancock and Ramsey Lewis, and blending it with more influences from soul music too – which means that in addition to great keyboard solos from Lewis, you'll also hear wonderful vocals on most of these cuts – a key element that really helped Webster cross over into so many worlds at the time. As with work from the same period by Patrice Rushen, there's a sublime blend going on here – one that still sounds tremendous all these many years later, and which is presented with a great selection of cuts – including the rare "Japanese Umbrella" and "Boston" – plus "El Bobo", "Barbara Ann", "Hideaway", "Give Me Some Emotion", "Dancer", "Do It With Style", "Let Me Be The One", "Touch My Love", "Reach Out", "Love Won't Harm No One", and "There's A Happy Feeling". Milestone, 1960s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $11.99
One of numerous two-fers offered by Milestone in the early 70s, compiling recordings by artists that fell under the Fantasy records catalog umbrella at the time, in this case, the Riverside recordings of Wes Montgomery. Weather ReportWeather Report Live In Tokyo (180 gram purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
CBS/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $51.99 54.99
A Japanese-only album from Weather Report – recorded early in the group's career, and with some of the same sort of freedoms that Miles Davis was getting on his own double-length dates from Japan! The tracks here are quite stretched out, and often adventurous – showing a marked ability to jam heavily at one moment, get contemplative the next, and continually explore sounds on the frontiers of fusion in the 70s. The group's the "second chapter" Weather Report – with Wayne Shorter on reeds, Joe Zawinul on keyboards, Miroslav Vitous on bass, Eric Gravatt on drums, and Dom Um Romao on percussion – and titles include "Orange Lady", "Vertical Invader/Seventh Arrow/TH", "Surucucu/Lost/Early Minor/Direction", and "Tears/Umbrellas". West Coast ConsortiumAll The Love In The World – Complete Recordings 1964 to 1972 (3CD set) ... CD
Pye/Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CDs ... $26.99 34.99
Not a group from the Cali scene of the 60s, as their name might make you expect – but instead a very cool UK group, and one who've picked up some of the best sunshine pop inspirations of the period, then mixed them with trippier touches as well! The set begins early, at a time when the group were maybe more slavish to American inspirations – but then really stretches out near the end of the 60s and start of the 70s, when West Coast Consortium were also taking more chances with their music, and really experimenting with the way that production played with their vocals! And while they had a big single back in the day, West Coast Consortium never issued that much material – certainly not here in the US – which makes this huge 3CD set a real discovery, especially as it also include later recordings for the Trend label, material done as The Consortium, and even some unissued albums! There's a massive 76 tracks on the set, along with very detailed notes – and titles include "Philadelphia", "Money Matters", "Rings & Things", "Mr Umbrella Man", "Whatever Became Of Emily Jane", "Live & Let Live", "This Poor Man", "Scarlet Rider", "One Six Two", "Willow Wood", "The Elastic Band", "Beggar Man", "Cynthia Serenity", "I Don't Want Her Any More", and "When The Day Breaks". ✨✧ Frank ZappaHot Rats ... CD
Ryko, 1969. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of those records that should be an insane dark mess, given the look of the cover – but which turns out to be a surprisingly well put-together effort all the way through! Zappa does a great job of hiding behind his hair here – never acting with the pomp that a pop genius like him could easily have enacted – and instead passing off the record as if it's just another freakout – despite the fact that the arrangements are some of his tightest, most focused, and downright groovy so far! There's plenty of key musical help to make the whole thing come out right – including bass from Shuggie Otis, the inimitable voice Captain Beefheart, on the cassic "Willie The Pimp", violin from Jean-Luc Ponty, drums from Paul Humphrey, and bass from Max Bennett – all players who really live up to the musical complexity of Zappa's compositions – often with a pre-fusion vibe that's almost unexpected. Other titles include "Son Of Mr Green Grass", "The Gumbo Variations", "It Must Be A Camel", "Peaches In Regalia", and "Little Umbrellas". CD

Atlantic, 1973. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the undisputed 70s classics from John Prine – a set mostly recorded down in Nashville, but at a level that still keeps Prine's wit and Chicago sensibilities firmly intact! The instrumentation here is a bit augmented from before – with help from the great Reggie Young on guitar, and a few Arif Mardin production touches – but overall with that up-close, upfront quality that's perfect for Prine's words and vocals. Titles include "Grandpa Was A Carpenter", "Onomatopoeia", "Blue Umbrella", "Dear Abby", "Often Is A Word I Seldom Use", "Christmas In Prison", "Please Don't Bury Me", and "The Accident". CD

The groundbreaking first album from Weather Report – a massive session that took fusion to a whole new level for the 70s! Most of the players here had been associated with Miles Davis at some point in the year or two beforehand – and Miles' electric work is definitely a starting point for this group – but they quickly flow off in whole new directions, thanks to the mighty legacy of their own talents on previous records! The group features an intense lineup with Wayne Shorter on saxes, Joe Zawinul on keyboards, Miroslav Vitous on bass, Alphonse Mouzon on drums, and Airto on percussion – all coming together in a groove that's often incredibly raw and free – with plenty of sharp electronic bits from Zawinul crackling under the acoustic elements in the music. The sound is still quite revolutionary all these years later – and titles include "Tears", "Eurydice", "Orange Lady", "Umbrellas", and "Milky Way". LP, Vinyl record album

Harlem Shuffle (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's been plenty of great reggae collections issued over the years, but this excellent series seems to do a better job than most – in part because it bypasses the hits, and ends up pulling together some wonderful work from the wider world of the Jamaican 7" single! The tracks on here were originally issued on a variety of labels that now live under the Trojan umbrella – imprints that include Randy's, Amalgamated, Grape, Treasure Isle, and Duke – and with that variety of sources, there's also a great variety of sounds too – nicely gritty work that booms out of the speakers nice and loud – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Soup (version)" by JJ All Stars, "La La" by The Inspirations, "Arabian Dub" by Tommy McCook & The Supersonics, "Red Ash" by Carl Bryan, "Lottery Spin" by Zap Pow, "Warricka Hill" by The Love Generation, "Reggae Dance" by Owen Gray, "Feel All Right" by The Cables, and "A Testimony" by Upsetter Pilgrims. Riverside/OJC, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
A nice little collection of some classic hard bop from Jimmy Heath, with a few of the sides of some the stuff he recorded with larger ensembles thrown in for good measure, pulled together in the 80s, once the OJC family of labels came under the Fantasy umbrella. Heath's Riverside recordings of the late 50s and early 60s is some of our favorite material on the label, recording with a soulful, hip edge and fiery hard bop energy. This collection pulls numbers from The Thumper, Really Big!, The Quota, Triple Threat, Swamp Seed and On The Trail, and feature a host of top notch players, including Nat Adderley, Curtis Fuller, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Pat Patrick, Cannonball Adderley, Julius Watkins, Freddie Hubbard, Cedar Walton, and brothers Percy and Albert Heath. Tracks include "Nice People", "Who Needs It?", "The Picture Of Heath", "Down Shift", "Lowland Lullaby", "Dew & Mud", "Wall To Wall" and "All The Things You Are". Chi Sound/Southbound (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great collection of work from an under-documented side of the Chicago soul scene! At the end of the 70s, most of the older talent of the Chicago scene had regrouped around producer Carl Davis after the demise (thanks to tax bungling!) of the Brunswick label – under the umbrella of Davis' new Chi-Sound imprint. Great stars from years past like Gene Chandler, Walter jackson, The Chi-Lites, and The Impressions – plus a few new ones – returned to carve out some of their last great recordings – with Davis at the helm, developing a more sophisticated sound that worked great for the maturing soul artists. This set brings together 15 cuts from the glory days of Davis' Chi-Sound imprint – including "Windy City Theme" by The Windy City Orchestra, "I Don't Do This To Every Girl I Meet" by Sydney Joe Qualls, "Tomorrow I May Not Feel The Same" by Gene Chandler, "Especially For You" by Manchild, "It's All Over" by Walter Jackson, "Heavenly Body" by The Chi-Lites, and "Get Down" by Gene Chandler. No need to think it over here – as the album's so groovy, we jump right in – thanks to plenty of upbeat disco arrangements from arranger Michael Zager! Zager worked previously with Cissy Houston, but here he really takes her out to the clubs – mixing strings and rhythms into some sweetly soaring backings that really work well with Houston's gospel-trained voice! There's a nice sense of drama to some of the grooves, but never too much to be campy – and titles include "Warning Danger", "An Umbrella Song", "Somebody Should Have Told Me", "Think It Over", "I Won't Be The One", and "Love Don't Hurt People". Some of the funkiest work we've ever heard from the great Polish jazzman Jerzy Milian – working here in the late 70s, and with a larger ensemble too – all in a level that's often got plenty of cop/crime soundtrack influence in the grooves! Milian's vibes are still in the mix somewhere, but the main focus is on the larger sound of the group – who maybe come across like some of the best funky Henry Mancini music from a few years before! There's keyboards on most numbers, and some added strings – and at points, there's even some very groovy wordless vocals – while Milian gets a bit of help from Andrzej Minkacz and Andrzej Marko directing the group. Titles include "Nemezja", "Pan Prominent", "Posejdona Humory", "Barabara", "Bernina", "Czarne Lusterko", and "Lysy W Kolysce" – plus versions of "Umbrellas Of Cherbourg", "How Deep Is Your Love", and "Hey Jude". Sublime jazzy soul from Pleasure – one of the greatest groups of the west coast scene of the 70s – and a key force in defining the Fantasy Records groove of the time! Pleasure have a sound that's head and shoulders above most of their contemporaries – especially groups on major labels who tried for this sort of blend, but never made it come off that right – usually too smooth or too commercial. The mighty Wayne Henderson is a key factor in their sound – as he produced some of the best tracks with that well-balanced groove he brought to his best work under At-Home Productions umbrella. CD features 14 titles that include "Ghettos Of The Mind", "Future Now", "The Real Thing", "Let's Dance", "Foxy Lady", "Yearnin' Burnin", "Take A Chance", "Joyous", "Sassafras Girl", and 3 mixes of "Glide". A pivotal album from Siouxie & The Banshees – maybe the first record they issued during a time when the artists they inspired started to break into the mainstream – which also maybe helped the group find a crossover fame they might never have expected at the start of the decade! Rhythms are maybe up a bit from before, songs slightly more tuneful, yet still crafted with that great blend of fuzzy guitar and Siouxie's incredible vocals – still the group's strongest calling card, and way better than some of the lesser acts of the time. Titles include the mini-hit "Cities In Dust" – plus "Candyman", "Cannons", "Party's Fall", "Lands End", "92 Degrees", and "The Sweetest Chill". ✨✧ Cissy HoustonThink It Over ... LP
Private Stock, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Michel LegrandLa Piscine (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Universal (France), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredibly groovy late 60s soundtrack from Michel Legrand! La Piscine may well be one of the last under-reissued scores from Legrand's genius period – that time when he was hitting heavily on soundtracks for The Thomas Crown Affair, Umbrellas Of Cherbourg, and other classics. This one's got a feel that's right up there with those – a mix of jazzy styles, mod themes, and cool vocal touches – sometimes scatted a bit, with that raspy style we love in Legrand's singing. A few other tunes are a bit mellow, but in a great way that really fits the watery title of the set – cool and shimmering, and with a great sense of sound that really shows Legrand's talents. Titles include "La Piscine", "Blues Pour Romy", "Suspicion", "Dans La Soiree", and "De Souvenirs En Regrets" – plus "Run Brother Rabbit Run" sung by Delaney Bramlett and "Ask Yourself Why" sung by Sally Stevens. ✨✧ Sue RaneySue Raney Vol 2 ... CD
Studio West, 1960s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A decade's worth of wonderful work from singer Sue Raney – a vocalist who was a real west coast gem at the time, and rarely got the fame she deserved! Sue's got a style that follows nicely in the mode of Chris Connor or June Christy, but which is also a bit warmer and personal, especially in a setting such as this. The sides are all studio sessions, but rare ones done for the US Navy Swings radio show at the time – recorded with backing from Shelly Manne & His Men, The Page Cavenaugh group, or the Buddy DeFranco Tommy Gumina Quartet. Instrumentation is all tightly jazzy, and sometimes filled with some freshly different phrasings – and the set features a nicely varied selection of 20 tunes that include "Umbrellas Of Cherbourg", "Breezin Along With The Breeze", "Goodbye Charlie", "Bluesette", "Five Definitions Of Love", "No Place To Go", "Burnt Sugar", "I Ain't Go No Worry", and "My Love Is A Wanderer". ✨✧ Weather ReportWeather Report Live In Tokyo (Japanese pressing) ... CD
CBS (Japan), 1972. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
CD
Also available Weather Report Live In Tokyo (180 gram purple vinyl pressing) ... LP 51.99
