✨✧ Sergio Mendes & Brasil '65In Person At El Matador ... LP
Atlantic, 1965. Very Good+ ... $16.99
A great little live set from Sergio Mendes and his Brasil 65 group – a pre-Brasil 66 combo that features Wanda De Sah on vocals and Rosinha De Valenca on guitar! The style here is more traditionally Brazilian bossa than Sergio's later work on A&M – a fluidly jazzy groove captured with a good sense of intimacy despite the live setting – and issued by Atlantic as a nice antidote to some of the more watered-down bossa work on the US market! The vocals are wonderful – often spare and a bit more fragile than the two-voiced sound of A&M – and titles include "Tem Do De Mim", "Noa Noa", "Caminho De Casa", and "Arrastao". LP, Vinyl record album
(Green and blue label stereo pressing. Cover has seam splitting, a name in pen, and light surface wear.)

Gang Of FourEntertainment ... CD
Matador, 1979. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
One of the greatest debut albums of all time – a record that hit the world like a comet when it was released, and which will continue to burn brightly for many decades to come! There's few groups who get things so right as Gang Of Four on this set – balancing the sharp edges of UK punk with a deeper political sense – but one that puts its message across in these short, sharp, shocks that are often given an extra punch by some surprisingly strong basslines! The mix of rawness, message, and surprising groove really sets this one apart from the pack – and that includes the work by legions of groups who've tried to imitate it over the years. Tracks include "Ether", "Natural's Not In It", "Not Great Men", "Damaged Goods", "Return The Gift", "Guns Before Butter", "Glass", and "Contract". CD

Gang Of FourSolid Gold ... LP
Warner/Matador, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 22.99
A stunning second set from the mighty Gang Of Four – and a record that's got all the power and politics of their famous Entertainment debut! The set's got some wonderfully heavy basslines amidst the scratchy guitar that makes the group so great – but nothing's too polished, certainly not as in their crossover club modes to come – and the call/response vocal style of Andy Gill and Jon King is tremendous – a very fresh way to deliver the message, and one that's still never been matched all these many years later. Titles include "Paralyzed", "What We All Want", "Why Theory", "If I Could Keep It For Myself", "Cheeseburger", "The Republic", "Outside The Trains Don't Run On Time", "In The Ditch", "A Hole In The Wallet", and "He'd Send In The Army". Mdou MoctarAfrique Victime ... CD
Matador, 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
It's a bit startling to see a record by Tuareg music legend Mdou Moctar on the indie rock powerhouse Matador Records – but that placement is also a great statement to just how much Moctar's guitar and the whole Tuareg scene has become in recent years! The sound is every bit as sharp as on previous records – searing work from Mdou – who also sings in a style that's leaping and flowing with all these different currents than his fuzzy work on the strings – backed with lots of percussion, both electric and acoustic, and rhythm guitar that drives the whole thing home nicely. Tracks were recorded in a few different global spots, but there's a nicely unified vibe to the entire set – and titles include "Chismiten", "Ya Habibti", "Adsikte Akal", "Layla", "Bismilahi Atagah", and "Afrique Victime". ✨✧ Sonic YouthEternal ... CD
Matador, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Indie rock elders Sonic Youth's first high profile album on an indie label in about 20 years – the group's first for Matador, and a skillful mix of insistent, exciting melodic precision, barbed lyricism, random bursts of noise, and enough layered hypnotic guitar errata that you'll hear something new each time you come back to it! Through the years they continued to be pretty exciting, and for the most part managed to avoid repeating themselves, while still working in something of a comfort zone – once throwing a screwdriver in the old noise rock guitar neck with the addition of Jim O'Rourke to the group, and with O'Rourke's departure, former Pavement player Mark Ibold on bass. Kim Gordon is now freed up to be play guitar, making for a triple threat along with Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo – and it's a riveting sound. They don't reinvent the wheel on The Eternal – but they steer into adventurous waters – and as long as they're making records this good we're hoping they live up to title! Includes "Sacred Trickster", "Anti-Orgasm", "Leaky Lifeboat (For Gregory Corso)", "Antenna", "What We Know", "Calming The Snake", "Poison Arrow", "Malibu Gas Station", "Thunderclap For Bobby Pyn", "No Way", "Walkin Blue", "Massage The History". Billy CobhamSpectrum ... LP
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good- Gatefold ... $9.99
A very full-on hard heavy fusion album! Drummer Billy Cobham lays down some massive hard beats, while Tommy Bolin wails away on guitar, Jan Hammer pounds on electric piano, and Lee Sklar noodles on electric bass. 2 cuts feature a different lineup with Joe Farrell and Jimmy Owens – but the rock-heavy one dominates the album, with a very hard sound. The best cut is the slow mellow funk number "Red Baron", which has great breaks and nice electric piano. Other titles include "Stratus", "Taurian Matador", "To The Women In My Life", and "Quadrant 4". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label stereo promo. Vinyl has a mark that clicks on "Stratus". Cover has a promo sticker, heavy edge wear, clear tape on all sides, and masking tape holding the bottom seam.)

Eric DolphyComplete Memorial Album Sessions (The Douglas Recordings) ... CD
Lonehill (Spain), 1963. Used ... $11.99
The title's possibly a bit misleading here – as the record's not so much a memorial to Dolphy, but a repackaging of sides that were repackaged originally as such in the 60s! If that's not confusing enough, let us just explain that the set features 9 tracks from Dolphy's important recordings for Alan Douglas – tunes that have shown up over the years in a variety of formats, but which are probably most famously known under the album titles Iron Man and Jitterbug Waltz. The format of the work is quite unusual – and at times is closer to Dolphy's Blue Note recordings than most of his other work of the period – with an approach that is both spiritual and angular, always touched with Dolphy's keen sense of modernism. Players include Clifford Jordan, Sonny Simmons, Prince Lasha, Richard Davis, and Bobby Hutcherson – and titles include "Love Me", "Ode To CP", "Mandrake", "Iron Man", "Burning Spear", and "Music Matador". ✨✧ Francis LaiBobo – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Warner, Mid 60s. Sealed ... $14.99
An unusual early soundtrack from the great Francis Lai – done for an American film, and not the sort of European movies that he did so famously! Fortunately, the musical style is quite similar – lots of those warm currents and lush, slinky moods that we've always loved in Lai since his bit fame with A Man & A Woman – and even the goofy narrative can't spoil the music, given that the film stars Peter Sellers as a "trouba-matador" – a singing matador! Sellers sings on two cuts – "Girl From Barcelona" and "Bulls Of Salamanca" – and there's also a few dreamy chorus numbers that are a bit more American, but very nice. Titles include the bossa nova version of "Bobo's Lament", plus "The Blue Matador", "The Bobo", and "Olympia's Theme". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing, still sealed!)

Mike LeDonneIt's All Your Fault ... CD
Savant, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
One of the coolest, grooviest settings for the Hammond of Mike LeDonne that we've heard in years – a set that mostly features him working with a larger ensemble, at a level that brings back some of the great 60s sessions from Jimmy Smith and Oliver Nelson! Yet given Mike's touch on the keys, and the more contemporary mode of the groove, there's a nicely different vibe here – not just retro jazz organ with big band, but a new chapter in the book – balanced here with work from LeDonne's Groover Quartet – which features work from Eric Alexander on tenor, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Joe Farnsworth on drums. All three of those players are also in the larger group – and if you're keeping track, the set features five big band numbers, and three quartet tunes. Titles include "Matador", "It's All Your Fault", "Bags & Brown", "Blues For Jed", "Rock With You", and "Party Time". CD

Grover Washington JrSoul Box ... LP
Kudu, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP ... $19.99
One of the richest albums from the Kudu years of Grover Washington – a double-length set that shows the full range of his soul and imagination! The album was done in collaboration with Bob James – who arranged and conducted all tracks, and also plays keyboards on the date – and the style is kind of an added extension of other Washington work on Kudu, with added string and chorus bits to round out the sound! Things are still wonderfully soulful – thanks to James' sense of space and timing on the charts – and if anything, the added voices and orchestrations bring an almost soundtrack-like quality to the record – but one that still leaves plenty of room for Washington's solos on tenor, alto, and soprano sax! Most tracks are quite long – really stretching out with lots of room for fresh ideas – and titles include a 15 minute version of "Trouble Man", plus "Taurian Matador", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", "Masterpiece", "Aubrey", and "Don't Explain". ✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald & Duke EllingtonElla & Duke At The Cote D'Azur ... LP
Verve, 1966. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A superstar performance from the Antibes jazz festival at Cote D'Azur – one that features Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington sharing the stage, in a concert that was also recorded for a film! Most numbers here feature the full Ellington orchestra backing Ella up – but a few other numbers feature just backings from a trio with Jimmy Jones on piano and Grady Tate on drums. Duke and Ella trade the spotlight nicely – and Fitzgerald only sings on about half of the set, numbers that include "Mack The Knife", "The More I See You", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Jazz Samba", "How Long Has This Been Going On", and "Going Out Of My Head". Ellington's heard on other instrumental performances – some of which are a bit more upbeat and unbridled than usual – almost in a Basie mode. These tunes include "Trombonio Bustosolssimo", "Diminuendo In Blue & Blow By Blow", "The Old Circus Train Turn Around Blues", and "The Matador". LP, Vinyl record album
