Motown, 1983. Used ... $14.99
The great first album from The Mary Jane Girls – easily their best, and an 80s pop soul delight all the way through! Rick James is firmly at the helm of the quartet for this release – and although the sound has elements of James' own crossover funk of the time, there's also an approach that's sweeter and more female – balanced in a surprisingly nice way, and not nearly as cloying as other efforts of its type! Backings are lean and stripped down – often in a nice clubby 80s groove mode – and titles include "All Night Long", "Candy Man", "Boys", "Jealousy", "On The Inside", "Musical Love", "Prove It", and "You Are My Heaven". Mary Ann McCallEasy Living (80s pressing) ... LP
Regent, 1956. Near Mint- ... $6.99
Mary Ann McCall never cut very many records in the 50s – but all of them are pretty darn great, and this one's no exception! The set's a great balance of mainstream swing vocals and slightly more soulful arrangements – penned and led here by Ernie Wilkins, and played by a group that includes Zoot Sims, Seldon Powell, Pee Wee Moore, Nat Pierce, and Kenny Clarke. McCall romps easily through the upbeat numbers – giving them a feel that's lively, but never too playful – and she burns even better on the mellower tracks, which make good use of her slightly-dusky vocals. Titles include "Mean To Me", "Shake Down The Stars", "It's Been So Long", "Deed I Do", and "It's You Or No One". LP, Vinyl record album

Cecil Taylor & Mary Lou WilliamsEmbraced ... LP
Pablo, 1978. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A masterful meeting of two important piano modernists – Mary Lou Williams and Cecil Taylor – sounding incredibly wonderful here in each other's company! The set features a core rhythmic pulse from Mickey Roker on drums and Bob Cranshaw on bass – and Williams and Taylor really take off on their twin pianos – with Cecil almost leading Mary Lou more into territory of his own, although she also brings an undercurrent of soul to the set that makes the record unlike any other that Taylor ever recorded! The approach shouldn't work, but it's captivatingly brilliant from the start – as you'll hear on tracks that include "The Lord Is Heavy", "Good Ole Boogie", "Basic Chords", "Ayizan", "KC 12th Street", "Fandangle", and "Chorus Sud". Mary Afi UsuahAfrican Woman ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1978. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
One of the most hard-grooving set we've heard from singer Mary Afi Usuah – a set that has all these deep, bassy currents on the bottom – which hold a nice groove underneath Mary's heavenly voice! Usuah has a range that's much greater than some of her contemporaries – no surprise, since she studied opera in Rome – but the style here is nicely gritty overall, with bumping bass and some riffing guitar that almost pushes some numbers into Betty Davis territory, but with more of a 70s Afro soul vibe. Imagine if Miriam Makeba made a funk record, and you'll get part of the feel of this unique little set – which includes the cuts "What's A Woman To Do", "Sweet Elijah", "Our Generation", "Spread More Love", "Kam Fat Owo", "African Woman", and "Tenkim Kpoho". Mary Lou WilliamsZodiac Suite (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Folkways, 1945. Used ... $4.99
One of the first higher-concept recordings from pianist Mary Lou Williams – recorded in the mid 40s, but with a musical vision that holds up beautifully all these many years later! Despite the large group expectations you might have from the "suite" in the title, the tracks are all relatively intimate – played by a trio with Williams on piano, Al Lucas on bass, and Jack Parker on drums – and recorded in a way that often has Mary's piano out front in the mix, with Lucas' basslines providing a close second – working together in almost drumless formation at many points in the session. Titles include "Taurus", "Leo", "Libra", "Capricorn", "Pisces", "Cancer", "Virgo", "Scorpio", and "Aquarius" – and the CD feeatures 6 previously unreleased alternate takes! CD

Geffen, 2003. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The queen of hip hop soul takes it back to the gutter with guest spots by Jay-Z and P-Diddy on "Love & Life", 50 Cent on "Let Me Be The One", and Method Man on "Love @ 1st Sight", but overall this one has Mary in a better mood than the last album! You've probably heard by now that Mary's got Diddy back on the boards for most of the album, and the production is, for the most part anyway, no nonsense and unfussy. This appropriately makes Mary's great-as-always lead vocals the star of the show. Dr. Dre produced "Not Today", and we'd like to hear more of that team, but that's pretty much our only complaint! Other tracks include "Don't Go", "When We", "Ooh!", "Willing & Waiting", "Free", "It's A Wrap", "All My Love" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Bouncy, beat-heavy soul from Mary Davis – a set that's almost got a new jack vibe at times, thanks to the dynamic energy of the production! Mary's voice has its own sense of power that really matches the groove – and the shift is a nice late Tabu extension of the label's previous modes with the team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Bernard Terry handles about half the production of the set, and helps keep things balanced between catchy numbers and a few more serious cuts – and other producers include LA & Babyface, and Derock & Kayo. ✨✧ Mary WilsonMary Wilson ... LP
Motown, 1979. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A post-Supremes disco effort from Mary Wilson – but one that comes off relatively well, especially considering how a session like this could flop if done poorly! Mary's getting some top-shelf help on the album – Hal Davis on production, Art Wright on arrangements, and a set of original material by Frank Busey and John Duarte – all of which keeps the record from being just a disco filler kind of set. But the real strength here is Wilson's vocals – which are strongly soulful, and never overwhelmed by the backings. And while we're not ready to say that Mary's a great club diva, we're surprised at how well she does fit into this mode. Titles include "Midnight Dancer", "Red Hot", "You Make Me Feel So Good", "Pick Up The Pieces", and "I've Got What You Need". LP, Vinyl record album

A sparkling Christmas set from Mary J Blige – one that takes full advantage of those wonderful vocals, and lets them loose on a whole host of Holiday tunes! The album's on Verve, and has a feel that's a lot more classic than some of Mary's other work – a vibe that's somewhere between contemporary R&B and the older vocal jazz you'd hear on Christmas favorites from years past – an approach that comes through strongly in Mary's choice of tunes. Most of the numbers are favorite standards from the Holiday season, given a special Blige twist – arranged by David Foster, and titles include "Little Drummer Boy", "My Favorite Things", "This Christmas", "The Christmas Song", "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer", "Do You Hear What I Hear", "The First Noel", and "Petit Papa Noel". The landmark debut of Mary J Blige – a record that not only did a great job of blending underground hip hop and mainstream soul sensibilities – but maybe also opened the door for the Neo Soul revolution to come! Mary comes on here with a fresh new vision in female soul – one that's informed by the youth and upfront energy of the hip hop female MCs that preceded her – but with a depth that also makes Blige sort of the new Aretha Franklin for the end of the century – a deep soul singer, but one who's equally at home in the streets and the studio. Important production is by a young Sean Combs – some of his first great work on record – and the set also features guest appearances from Busta Rhymes, Little Shawn, Grand Puba, Erick Sermon, and CL Smooth. Titles include "Real Love", "Sweet Thing", "Love No Limit", "You Remind Me", "Reminisce", "What's The 411", "I Don't Want To Do Anything", "Changes I've Been Going Through", "Slow Down", and "My Love". "Living In A World" is from singer Mary Holmes – who trips along with this warm mellow groove that's really wonderful – almost a cross between modern soul production and some of the earlier southern soul vocal inflections – kind of like a mellow cut from Loleatta Holloway! 12-inch, Vinyl record

The record's a mixture of jazz and spiritual themes, and it features Mary Lou's piano set in some super-hip jazz arrangements that include players like Grant Green, Budd Johnson, Larry Gales, Melba Liston, Ben Tucker, and Percy Heath. The bass and piano work is amazing, and many tracks have a dark groove that's very subtle, but very compelling. Mary/Folkways, 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An excellent album by Mary Lou Williams – a set recorded during the 70s period when she was mixing in a bit of funk with her jazz! The sound here is wonderful – quite different than other work you might know from Williams, and much more in the sort of groove you'd expect from Junior Mance, Ray Bryant, Ramsey Lewis, or other soul jazz-oriented pianists! Williams plays acoustic piano in a very hip trio with Mickey Roker on drums and Bob Cranshaw on electric bass – the latter of whom brings in this well-rounded, soul-drenched tone that's a lot like the bass work on some of Monty Alexander's own best albums from the 70s. And Williams herself is totally great too – playing with some slightly exotic tones at points, and with a really in-the-pocket groove at others. Funky tracks include "Intermission" and "Rosa Mae" – and other titles include "Ghost Of Love", "Medi II", "Zoning Fungus", and a great version of Dizzy Gillespie's "Olinga". CD also features 2 previously unreleased tracks – "Syl-O-Gism" and an alternate of "Gloria". CD

New Amsterdam, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two guitarists, coming together here in a mighty nice way – with sounds, tones, and colors that are completely fresh – and which really showcase the most creative styles of both musicians! We always look for Mary Halvorsen's name on a record, and this time around, the pairing with John Dieterich is especially great – with both musicians on guitars, and Dieterich on a bit of added drums and keyboards, but not much – so that the whole energy of the record comes from the shifting, changing textures of the electric strings and the way they interact. This isn't a completely free improvised set – as most tunes are relatively rhythmic, and most have some sort of a melodic impulse – but the execution is really unique, and there's a rich array of interesting moments in the record, which shifts in spirit on every different track. Titles include "Lace Cap", "Excerpt From Spatial Serenade", "My Mother's Lover", "The Handsome", "Short Knives", and "Balloon Cord". CD

Motown, 1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most classic album ever from the legendary Mary Wells – and a set that really shows why she was one of Motown's first great singers at the start! Mary's got a way of sounding strong while having her heart broken too – a complicated emotional approach that comes through wonderfully in the classic tune, but which also really graces most of the numbers here too – recorded with this echoey brilliance that underscores some of the themes of sadness and longing. Smokey Robinson and Mickey Stevenson produced, and give Wells some of the best old school modes used in the early Miracles albums – and titles include the huge hit "My Guy" – plus "He's The One I Love", "Does He Love Me", "He Holds His Own", "My Baby Just Cares For Me", "You Do Something To Me", "If You Love Me, Really Love Me", and "At Last". A stunning look at the great Mary Wells – one of Motown's first female acts of the 60s, and one of the decade's most important early soul figures as well! Mary's work on record is very well-known, but the story behind the music is completely different, and surprisingly dark at times – a tale of a talented artist often caught between larger corporate forces, and personal antagonists as well – not to mention her own personal demons. Peter Benjaminson does a great job of getting at all these details without being overly sensational – and he works in lots of wonderful personal recollections from friends and colleagues who really help illuminate the more private moments. The book is over 300 pages, hardcover, with some black and white photos. Book

Mrs Miller sings one of two versions of the great theme song ("Mary Jane" – get it?) – and other tracks include the Dennis Coffey-like "Bay City Boys", "Jerry's Theme", "Ellie's Theme", "Store Stealing", and "Gas Hassle". Great all the way through – with a wide range of excellent tracks, and not just the usual biker ripoff motif! LP, Vinyl record album

Aphrodite's ChildIt's Five O'Clock ... CD
Mercury/World Psychedelia (Korea), 1969. New Copy ... $4.99
Brilliantly baroque psych from Aphrodite's Child – a stone classic cut while the group was in exile in Paris – heavy on drums, and with soaring keyboards that really work wonders with the vocals! Given that the group features a young Vangelis and Demis Roussos, there's plenty of raw power here – and the energy of the record is quite different than later work by either artist – very bold, and political too – with hardly any signs of their Greek roots, yet a sense of myth and majesty that are undeniable. There's surprising hooks to the tunes at times – and titles include "It's Five O'Clock", "Wake Up", "Annabela. "Let Me Love, Let Me Live", "Funky Mary", "Good Time So Fine", and "Marie Jolie". CD

Epic, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
The second album by Argent – Rod Argent's project immediately after the breakup of the Zombies! There's plenty of Zombie-like ideas here – particularly those floating around the Odyssey and Oracle album, but they're also done without the dreamy pop style of Colin Blunstone's vocals, which makes for a much harder sound overall. Added into that the guitar of Russ Ballard, which really kicks into the tunes nicely, and you've got some great rock and roll work – written with a pop sensibility, but played with a razor-sharp edge that's pretty hard hitting. Titles include "Lothlorien", "Rejoice", "Pleasure", "Sweet Mary", "Where Are We Going Wrong", "Rejoice", "Cast Your Spell Uranus", and "Celebration". LP, Vinyl record album

Albert AylerNew Grass/Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Germany), 1968/1969. New Copy ... $9.99 11.98
Late greatness from Albert Ayler – two Impulse albums back to back! New Grass is one of the last albums that Ayler ever recorded – and one of his most memorable! The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! The record features an incredibly haunting "Message From Albert", plus the tracks "New Generation", "Sun Watcher", "New Ghosts", and "Free At Last". Completely fascinating, and a record that really makes you wonder what would have happened had he not died a mysterious young death! Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe is a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

Heavy duty fuzzy funk – and a landmark album from one of the most Hendrix-inspired groups of the early 70s! The style here is guitar funk with plenty of rock thrown in – all really fuzzed-up in production, and often a bit distorted – so that the group are kind of a lost link between the work of Betty Davis and the more mainstream sounds of Jimi! These guys also backed up Fugi on the massive "Mary, Don't Take Me On No Bad Trip", but the sound here's even heavier – even more guitar-jamming than early work by Funkadelic! Capitol/BGO (UK), 1967/1968. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A pair of Capitol Records classics from Glenn Campbell – back to back on a single CD! First up is Gentle On My Mind – an insanely wonderful early album from Glenn Campbell – the kind of music that's not really rock, pop, or country – but instead a unique summation of all, at a level that only Campbell could do this well The album kicks off with the sublime pop hit "Gentle On My Mind" – one of those jangly tunes that we could listen to forever – and then soars into a beautiful blend of tunes from different sources, including covers of Nilsson's "Without Her", Rod McKuen's "The World I Used to Know", Jimmie Rodgers' "It's Over", and Donovan's "Catch The Wind" – as well as the huge hit "Mary In The Morning". Glenn's got a hell of a voice – and it sounds great on all the tracks! By The Time I Get To Phoenix begins with Glenn Campbell's amazing take on the title tune by Jimmy Webb – a pure moment of 60s genius! The pairing of Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb is probably one of the greatest ideas ever in the history of pop music – as you'll hear on the album's title track, "By The Time I Get To Phoenix". Glen's original hit version of the song – written by a wee Jimmy at a young age – forever cut the way for his unique blend of pop, country, and easy vocal styles. The tune also kicks off this pretty nice little album of tracks that features great lesser known numbers, including some surprisingly great country covers. Titles include "Back In The Race", "My Baby's Gone", "Tomorrow Never Comes", "Bad Seed", "Love is A Lonesome River", and "I'll Be Lucky Some Day". CD

Two LP's on one CD. The first set is a later one for Vee Jay, and it brings together half of the Jazz Messengers with a batch of west coast players – in a groove that wonderfully mixes together different traditions and rhythms in jazz – and which steps out with a sound that's far more than the sum of its parts! Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, and Curtis Fuller join a group headed by Buddy De Franco, and featuring Victor Feldman on piano and vibes, plus Victor Sproles on bass and Freddie Hill on trumpet. The sound of the group is quite unusual – and a lot lighter than you'd guess – giving Buddy plenty of room to solo in a breezy style that's grown tremendously since his 50s recordings – pushed along by some heavier soul from Art and the group. Titles include "Rain Dance", "Blues Bag", "Twelve Tone Blues", "Kush", and "Cousin Mary". The second album's one of the few ever cut as a leader by Louis Hayes – a very soulful talent who's probably best known for his work with Horace Silver and Cannonball Adderley during the late 50s. Hayes' has a wonderful approach to the record – borrowing bits of the exoticism of his work with Silver, and bits of the harder soul jazz from Cannonball's group – all of which is played to perfection by a tight quintet that includes Yusef Lateef, Sam Jones, Barry Harris, and Nat Adderley. From early years recording as a young voice alongside her father's congregation, Aretha has matured into a hell of a lead singer – and really knocks it out of the park here alongside the mighty James Cleveland, and the Southern California Community Choir! Verve/Jazz Beat (Spain), Mid 50s. Used 2CD ... $24.99
A great pairing from the mid 50s – the tenor of Stan Getz and piano of Lou Levy – heard here in a host of LA recordings from Stan's years at Verve! First up are tracks from Stan Getz & The Cool Sounds – but only the ones that feature Getz with the west coast lineup of Loy Levy on piano, Shelly Manne on drums, and Leroy Vinnegar on bass – heard more famously on Stan's West Coast album of the same time. Titles include "Of Thee I Sing", "A Handful Of Stars", "Love Is Here To Stay", and "Serenade In Blue". Next is The Steamer – a word that we'd necessarily think to use with the gently flowing tenor tone of Stan Getz – but that doesn't stop the album from being a great one, and perhaps in Getz-like terms, it might well have a bit more steam than usual! The album features Getz in a quartet with a nicely flowing groove – nicely vamping piano from Lou Levy in the background on most numbers, and a definite edge in the lead tenor solos – still blown with the warmth of earlier Getz recordings, but perhaps showing some of the modern flourishes to come. Bass is by Leroy Vinnegar and drums are by Stan Levey – and titles include "Blues For Mary Jane", "There'll Never Be Another You", and "You're Blase". Award Winner also features some great rhythm accompaniment from the trio of Lou Levy on piano, Stan Levey on drums, and Leroy Vinnegar on bass! The tracks are nice and open – with plenty of room for Stan to roam around – and although you might expect a tightly-arranged kind of sound from the west coast setting, the album's actually surprisingly more relaxed – a fair bit like some of the more open-ended jazz that Shelly Manne started to record on his own at the start of the 60s. Titles include "Where Or When", "Smiles", "This Can't Be Love", and "Woody 'n You". The package is rounded out by 4 more tracks – with Stan on tenor, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Bob Whitlock on bass, and Max Roach on drums – on titles that include "Nobody Else But Me", "Down By The Sycamore Tree", "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", and "With The Wind & The Rain In Your Hair". Phil Ranelin's also in the group on trombone – and other players include Charles Eubanks on keyboards, Ike Daney on drums, and Will Austin on bass – and the album also features some spoken passages by the Black Messengers, Oba and Vajava. The whole thing's fantastic – that strong collaborative spirit that graced the best part of the American jazz underground of the time – and titles include "Mary Had An Abortion", "Vol II Angry Young Man (parts 1 & 2)", "Consciousness", and "Rebirth". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition 180 gram pressing – fully endorsed by Wendell Harrison!)

Brenda HollowayGreatest Hits & Rare Classics ... CD
Motown/Spectrum (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $8.99
Great work from Brenda Holloway – one of the first strong female singers to work for Motown – even if she never stayed with the label long enough to get the same sort of fame as Diana Ross, Mary Wells, or some of her other contemporaries! Holloway had already recorded a bit before Motown – and she leaps into these cuts with a fully-formed style – a deep, rich vocal approach that rivals Maxine Brown at the same time – sometimes mixed with the same sort of strings and soul approach that Brown was using over at Wand Reocrds. The set features key tracks by Brenda that were issued at the time, plus some great rare numbers too – a total of 18 cuts that include "Operator", "When I'm Gone", "Who's Lovin You", "Where Were You", "Every Little Bit Hurts", "You Can Cry On My Shoulder", "I've Got To Find It", "Together Till The End Of Time", "I've Been Good To You", "I'll Be Available", "Starting The Hurt All Over Again", and "Hurt A Little Every Day". ✨✧ HubaHuba ... CD
Jupiter (Finland), 2007. Used ... $6.99
The long-awaited full length album from Huba – a Finnish combo who first caught our ear a few years back, with an incredibly soulful approach that's rooted way back in the 70s! There's a quality here that reminds us a fair bit of Curtis Mayfield on the best numbers – a slightly raspy approach to the vocals that's far more soulful than you'd guess from the cover, or the origin of the music – served up with gently funky backings that have bits of wah wah guitar, great horns, and an overall sound that's as lean and personal as the vocals! Production is often subtly simple – somewhere in a space between Hi Records and Curtom – further focusing the energy of the record in the right direction – and tunes are all originals by lead singer Tuomas Kaila, with titles that include "Mary", "Man Brings The Bread", "Summer Morn", "The Midwife", "Let The Lightning Strike", "Like Sly Says", and "Natural High". MGM/Alternative Fox (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... About February 15, 2020
One of the greatest albums that Dick Hyman ever recorded – a mad mix of keyboards that more than lives up to its name and its wonderful cover! The album has Dick playing instruments that include electronic organs, keyboards, and ondioline – working in a "moon" oriented style that has lots of bloops and bleeps tripping over very groovy tunes, all augmented by wild wordless vocals by Mary Mayo. The whole thing's kind of like a funky Yma Sumac album, recorded on Saturn – and the whole thing's sublime, from conception, to production, to execution, and even the cover! Titles include "Moon Gas", "Space Reflex", "Star Eyes", "Imagination", "I'm Glad There Is You", "Maid Of the Moon", and "Desafinado". LP, Vinyl record album

Ikebe ShakedownKings Left Behind ... CD
Colemine, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 14.98
It's hard to imagine these kings being left behind, as the sound of Ikebe Shakedown just keeps getting bolder and more majestic with each new release – a very special strand of deep funk, with a blend of horns that you might find in a more Afro-styled band, mixed with tighter rhythms at the core – and dosed throughout with a really cool, very twangy guitar! The mix of elements is great – almost as if a chicha guitarist wandered into sessions for an Afro Funk record, and convinced the rest of the guys to work in more small combo modes, in a way that allows the guitar a great presence in the sound, as it washes over most of the tunes with a strong sense of color! Titles include "Hammer Into Anvil", "Horses", "Mary's Corner", "Not Another Drop", "Unqualified", and "No Going Back". CD

Motown, 1978. New Copy ... $5.99 6.98
Rick James' first LP for Motown subsidiary Gordy – an effort that was to provide the blueprint for his later success! James' trademark pop bass funk style is fully formed on this one already, and though we may once have thought little of the slick production and style, looking back this stuff has a good bit more substance than some of the other commercial R & B of the day! "Mary Jane" & "You & I" were the 2 big hits of this album, which also includes "Be My Lady", "Hollywood" & "Sexy Lady". CD

Invictus/Demon (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A great solo album by this member of Chairmen of the Board – done with some wicked Holland Dozier Holland production, at a level that almost makes Johnson sound heavier here than in his work with his more famous group! The vocals have that same sort of crazy pinched sound that he had with The Chairmen, and there's loads of great original tunes here – plus a few Chairmen numbers, thrown into the mix, in the way that things sometimes got repeated on the Invictus label. The grooves are nice and bouncy – and cuts include "God's Gift To Man", "Every Couple's Not A Pair", "I'll Never Get Tired Of You", "Mary Lou Thomas", and "My Credit Didn't Go Through". Well-blown material from trumpeter Jonah Jones – recorded in a hip setting with the French group of Dave Pochonet for support! Dave's on drums, arrangements are by Andre Persiany, and the setting is pretty open and relaxed – nice small combo work that lets Jones blow in a really exploratory way – much more so than on his Capitol recordings of the 50s! Psychedelic pop from the late 60s UK scene by July – of the tighter, hook-laden variety – with big catchy melodies, buzzing guitars and heavy drums on the bottom end! This is July's one-and-only album, and if it doesn't get them into to pantheon with some of the other adventuresome psych pop rockers of the era – it's just as endearing as many others that became staples. The tunefulness is expert – and the titles include "My Clown", "Dandelion Seeds", "Jolly Mary", "Hallo To Me", "You Missed It All", "The Way", "To Be Free", "Crying Is For Writers", "I See", "A Bird Lived" and more. Wes MontgomeryIn The Beginning – Early Recordings from 1949 to 1958 ... CD
Resonance, Late 40s/1950s. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
An incredible look at the very young Wes Montgomery – rare early recordings done before his breakthrough material for the Riverside label in the late 50s – but already showing Wes as one of the freshest talents of his generation on guitar! The bulk of the material features Montgomery in live settings, mostly in his home turf of Indianapolis – but the collection also features a never-heard studio session from 1955 – recorded for Epic Records with Quincy Jones as the producer! The live tracks are wonderful – full of fire, but never roughshod or gritty – already showing that masterful Montgomery approach to the guitar in full effect – shining in the company of contemporaries who include Monk Montgomery on bass, Buddy Montgomery or Richie Crabtree on piano, Gene Morris or Alonzo Pookie Johnson on tenor, and Sonny Johnson on drums. It's especially great to hear tenor with Montgomery – an instrument that didn't always figure in his early sessions – and the quality of Alonzo's playing is especially great on the Epic studio sides too. There's a huge amount of information in the package to illuminate the music – plenty of notes, photos, and more – and titles include "Six Bridges To Cross", "Ralph's New Blues", "Soft Winds", "King Trotter", "All The Things You Are", "Wes' Tune", "Leila", "Far Wes", "Going Down To Big Mary's", "Brazil", "Four", "Smooth Evening", and "Carlena's Blues". The album features a compelling mix of covers – songs originally recorded by Jess Conrad, Scott Walker, OMD, Buffalo Springfield, Jesus & Mary Chain, Weezer, and even Madonna – but all given a very personal spin by Morriss! Mark's got this way of weaving together different 60s influences – a bit of blue-eyed pop, touches of mod or psych instrumentation, even some slightly folksy currents – all to suit the modes of the individual songs – with a mode that maybe even gets past the idea of any sort of single style for the record. Titles include "Duchess", "Self Control", "Angel", "Almost Gold", "Don't Let Go", "Love Comes Quickly", "Rock & Roll Woman", "Souvenir", "This Pullover", and "Lucretia (My Reflection)". CD

A great little session by Murray – recorded at that point in the early 90s when DIW was turning out some especially soulful records!
