✨✧ Duck Baker & OthersConfabulations ... CD
ESP, 2021. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An assortment of collaborative improvisations – Duck Baker on guitar, and a range of top-flight musicians on the variety of different selections – work recorded over the past few decades, in spaces that includes clubs, homes, and studios around the world! Baker has always been a very versatile player – his albums always have such a different feel, it's often hard to say that there's one sort of style that defines his playing. And that versatility really shows up here – as you'll hear Duck in a series of duets with Michael Moore on alto, Mark Dresser on bass, Derek Bailey on guitar, Steve Beresford on piano, John Butcher on tenor, and Roswell Rudd on trombone – plus a trio with Alex Ward on clarinet and Joe Williamson on bass – and a quartet with Ward on clarinet, John Edwards on bass, and Steve Noble on drums. Titles include "Indie Pen Dance", "Duo For 225 Strings", "Pope Slark", "Signing Off", "The Missing Chandler", and "East River Delta Blues". CD

✨✧ Jack WalrathJack Walrath – Live At Smalls ... CD
Cellar Live (Canada), 2024. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Jack Walrath is something of a secret hero in jazz – a player who's created amazing sounds for decades, both in his own groups and in lineups led by giants like Charles Mingus or Bobby Watson – but also an artist who's sometimes a bit under the radar, then pops up with an amazing record like this! Walrath is often at his best in a more open, freewheeling live setting – definitely the case in the way the Smalls Live series allows a key player to open up – often producing the kind of material that doesn't always get captured this well in the studio. And as with most Smalls sessions, the rest of the group is superb too – Abraham Burton on tenor, George Burton on piano, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Donald Edwards on drums – all stretching out on tracks that all hover nicely around the ten minute mark. Titles include "A Bite In Tunisia", "Roadkill", "Sacrifice", "Mood For Muhal", and "Left Turn On 86th Street". CD

✨✧ Jimmy SmithBluesmith (Russian pressing) ... CD
Verve/Lilith (Russia), 1972. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the hippest Jimmy Smith albums of the early 70s – a lean and mean, down and dirty, back to basics session for Verve – one that's got plenty of grit in the grooves! L:ike the Root Down album, this set is recorded live with a very stretched out feel – tracks that take Jimmy Smith back to the more open-ended styles of his roots, and get past some of the slicker notes of later years. There's not as much heavy funk as on Root Down, but the sound is still equally great – with plenty of sharp edges on the instrumentation, which includes Jimmy's Hammond alongside bass from Leroy Vinnegar, tenor from Teddy Edwards, guitar from Ray Crawford, drums from Donald Dean, and congas from Victor Pantoja. One title – "Blues For 3 + 1" – hits a great little groove that's almost bossa-funky – and other tracks include "Absolutely Funky", "Lolita", "Bluesmith", and "Mournin Wes". CD

✨✧ Teddy EdwardsInimitable Teddy Edwards ... CD
Xanadu, 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
70s brilliance from tenorist Teddy Edwards – a really overlooked album, and one that marks a great step forward from some of Edwards' better-known material of the 60s! That impeccable tone is still very strongly in place – that Edwards way of blowing smooth, but with a subtle bite, too – and Teddy's also developed this sense of flow that's really special – a difference than the way he played fifteen or twenty years before – with almost a Sonny Criss-like approach that really holds us rapt, even in more subtle moments. The album's beautifully recorded – in that stunning Xanadu label way – and the group's a quartet, with Duke Jordan on piano, Larry Ridley on bass, and Freddie Waits on drums. Edwards is clearly the start of the show, though – and really shines on titles that include "Sunset Eyes", "Imagination", "One By One", and "Stella By Starlight". CD

✨✧ Howard McGhee & Teddy EdwardsWise In Time ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great late life work from these two important figures on the LA jazz scene of the postwar years – trumpeter Howard McGhee and tenorist Teddy Edwards – both sounding wonderful here in a very relaxed, open setting! The record's got an approach that's especially marked by the deeper, soulful tone that Edwards adopted from the 60s onward – that great ear for a ballad, which McGhee follows strongly in his performance, although with a tone that's maybe a bit more offbeat. The rest of the group features Art Hillery on piano, Leroy Vinegar on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and titles include a great version of "I Want To Talk About You", plus "Crescent", "Time Waits", "Ruby My Dear", and "If You Could See Me Now". Posi-Tone, 2022. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
A gem of a record, and one that might be easy to overlook – given the unfamiliar group name and relatively murky cover – yet a set that bristles with all of the energy of some of the best records on the Posi-tone label of late! There's a number of the label's key players here – working as a sharp sextet who manage to really pack a lot into each tune on the set – well-written numbers that are full of personal moments from players who include Markus Howell on alto and soprano, Willie Morris on tenor, Altin Sencalar on trombone, Misha Tsiganov on piano, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Donald Edwards on drums. Sencalar is a great player here – someone we really want to hear more of – and as with the label's best, the work here is mostly original, contributed by the players in the group – a lineup fo tracks that include "Grit", "Niecee", "Here To Stay", "The Path", "Flyover Country", "Seeley Street Song", and "Yasya". ✨✧ Esther PhillipsBurnin/Confessin The Blues ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 albums recorded by Esther in the years before she broke into big fame on the Kudu label. Burnin is a stunning live set that marked Esther's move from being a loud young R&B singer into an older, more mature interpreter of material in a more jazzy style. She's backed here by a good group that includes Jack Wilson on piano, Richard Tee on organ, Chuck Rainey on bass, and Cornell Dupree on guitar – and she moves through a heartbreaking set of material that heralds her later 70's recordings for Kudu. Tracks include "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream", "And I Love Him", "Shangri-La", and "Please Send Me Someone To Love". Confessin points back at Esther's earlier career in R&B, but has a nice jazzy finish – thanks to players like Sonny Criss, Teddy Edwards, and Herb Ellis – and the record also features a few more sides from the Burnin sessions at Freddie Jett's Nightclub in LA. Titles include "Romance In The Dark", "I Wonder", "I'm Getting Long Alright", "In The Evenin", and "I Love Paris". Due to time limit restrictions, the CD excludes the cuts "I'm Getting Long Alright" and "It Could Happen To You" from the LPs. CD

✨✧ Teddy EdwardsHeart & Soul ... LP
Contemporary, 1962. Good ... Out Of Stock
One of our favorite albums by Teddy Edwards – and one with some organ in the group! This obscure quartet side has Gerry Wiggins playing a rare bit of Hammond – grooving the group with a lean and open-ended soul jazz approach that really has Edwards blowing at his best! The style sits right up there next to Gene Ammons' best albums of the time, and the rest of the group features Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Milt Turner on drums. Titles include "Smokin", "No Regrets", "A Bag Of Blues", "Wiggin", and "Little Steddy" – all originals that get Edwards past the usual bag of soulful standards! LP, Vinyl record album
