Al JohnsonPeaceful ... LP
Marina/P-Vine (Japan), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99
A modern soul classic – and the first album recorded by 70s mellow soul maestro Al Johnson, a great artist whose lent his talents to countless others over the years! The sound is incredibly tight and plenty darn soulful – very much in the spirit of mid 70s classics by Leroy Hutson, Ronnie McNeir, and Leon Ware – with a massively personal approach that hits hard on both the groovers and the mellower cuts. There's a style here that's nicely rougher than that on Al's better-known album for Columbia – but one that shows that he can still cook up impeccable tunes without a major label budget for production! Titles include the great groover "I've Got My Second Wind", plus "Let's Go Home Together", "Peaceful", "Come Check Out This Love", and "Let Me Love You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Great Japanese pressing – with obi!)

Antonio Adolfo & Carol SaboyaAo Vivo ... CD
Kuarup/Points South, 2006. Used ... $6.99
The lovely Carol Saboya gets some great jazz-based backing here from Brazilian piano legend (and father) Antonio Adolfo – leading a small combo on this live date, and making Carol sound even better than usual! The set begins with Adolfo working through some instrumental passages, then Saboya slides in and warms the tunes up nicely with her great vocals – boldly soaring one minute, then dropping back into more intimate lyrics the next. Titles include "Bonita", "Canto De Ossanha", "Corrida De Jangada", "Sa Marina", "Milagre", "Insensatez", "O Cantador", "Voce E Eu", and "Passarim/Chovendo Na Roseira". CD

Dick FarneyPenumbra Romance ... LP
London (Brazil), 1972. Very Good ... $19.99 24.99
A wonderful album from this legendary Brazilian singer – and probably one of his best-ever! Farney began his career as a warm romantic vocalist in earlier pop years, but on this great set, he's emerging as a talented jazz singer, on a level with Leny Andrade or Elis Regina. The instrumentation's only a piano trio, and Farney's work on the keys fits perfectly with his moody vocals on tracks like "Este Seu Olhar", "Marina", "Ponto Final", "Uma Loira", and "Perdido De Amor". LP, Vinyl record album
(Purple label pressing. Cover has some wear and aging, a partially unglued top seam and a sticker on the back.)

Meirelles E Sua OrquestraBrazilian Beat Vol 4 ... LP
London (Brazil), 1969. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A killer mix of batucada tracks and larger orchestral ones, with a beautiful large production sound to the whole thing! Two cuts on the album are orchestral versions of Brazilian pop tracks – "Sa Marina" and "Pais Tropical" – both done with Meirelles usual sparkling groove. The other tracks on the album have a nice orchestral/batucada groove – and include "Estrela Do Mar", "Tai", "Arrasa A Sandalia", and "Agora E Cinza". Also features a stunning batucada version of Caetano Veloso's "Atras Do Trio Eletrico"! LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing, still in original plastic sleeve, with light wear & aging. Vinyl has light sleeve marks.)

Piero PiccioniMoment Of Truth ... LP
Mainstream, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A nice little score from the great Piccioni – penned for a mid 60s film about a bullfighter! Given the setting, there's a number of tracks on here that have a slight flamenco tinge – but there's also plenty of other tunes done in the wonderfully seductive early Piccioni jazz style – recorded in such a way that brings out some elements in a very weird-sounding mix that really points the way towards the Piccioni sound at the end of the 60s. Great titles include "Ziryab's Love", "Bossa Nova Marina", "Nothing To Say", and "Improvisation", a weird organ number that sounds like it was lifted from The Tenth Victim! LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing. A nice copy!)

Mark WeinsteinEl Cumbanchero ... CD
Jazzheads, 2011. Used ... $6.99
A charanga-based project from Mark Weinstein – but like most of Mark's work, an extremely creative outing that goes way past the obvious! The instrumentation is definitely in a charanga mode – lots of percussion, piano, bass, and tight violin lines – plus totally amazing work on flute from Weinstein – who soars, dips, turns, and leaps with a joyous energy that goes way past any charanga flute work of the 60s. But there's also a fuller sound here, too – thanks to complicated arrangements by Aruan Ortiz, which reference history, but go way past it – creating a sophisticated depth, but one that still swings nicely. Titles include "Aruanco", "El Cumbanchero", "La Mulata Rumbera", "Dona Olga", "Danzon De Liz", "Contigo En La Distancia", and "Perla Marina". CD

✨✧ Luiz BonfaBonfa ... LP
Dot, Late 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of Bonfa's better pop-bossa efforts of the 60s, and a record that features some pretty solid arrangements by Deodato. The record's still a mix of easy tunes and bossa ones, with the usual confusion of some of Bonfa's other American records – but the groove is pretty solid Now Sound stuff, executed well by all parties. Titles include "Amazonas", "Santa Cruz", "Love Is Blue", "Zabumba", and "Aqua Marina". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing, with deep groove.)

✨✧ ShindigIssue 131 ... Magazine
Shindig, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A lovely and young Marianne Faithfull is on the cover – for a great feature on the wonderful late 60s pop music she made early her career, which is so often overshadowed by her often rawer, darker, much more personal creative triumphs of decades to come – and speaking of overlooked early work, this also takes a look at the edgy mid 70s power pop of midwest heroes Cheap Trick, plus pieces on The Lemon Pipers, more on Arthur Brown (who was the previous issue's cover feature), Bret McKenzie, Dennis Hopper, Ashley Hutchings, Sylvie, Cathy Young, Marina Allen and more! Capitol, 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the few American albums issued by guitarist Geraldo Vespar – a musician from the same bossa nova generation as Joao Gilberto and Luis Bonfa! Geraldo's got a nice light touch on the strings, and the set was recorded in Brazil, with a nicely airy vibe throughout. Titles include "Lapinha", "Mancada", "Corcovado", "Eu E Brisa", "Sa Marina", and "No Brilhado Da Vaca", an early Wagner Tiso composition! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gilberto GilRealce ... CD
WEA, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
A nice album from the late 70's that manages to capture a lot of the warmth and imagination of Gil's earlier work. The production's a little smooth in parts, but Gil's beautiful voice and guitar playing are still right out front, especially in some of the more stripped-down tracks. Titles include "Marina", "Toda Menina Baiana", "Superhomem – A Cancao", and "Realce". CD

✨✧ Gino MarinacciAtom Flowers ... LP
Roman/Mono Jazz (Italy), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing sounds from Gino Marinacci – a 70s Italian jazz flute player, and one who's got a vibe that's very different than most of his American contemporaries! Gino really likes to go for a cool compressed tone on his instrument – often creating these warm waves of sound that are balanced by the arrangements in a great way – sometimes paired with additional flute from Alfio Gagliani, as both artists shift between variations on the instrument – in a lineup that has electric piano and organ from Antonello Vannucchi, soprano and alto from Quarto Maroni, tenor from Livio Cervellieri and Sal Genovese, and some especially great work from the legendary trombonist Dino Piana – whose own sense of compression is a great balance with the flutes! The instrumentation also includes electric bass and guitar, which with the keyboards make for a great 70s vibe – a sound that's very soulful, but with qualities that are nicely different from American work on labels like CTI. Titles include "Life", "Guardrail", "Space", "Atom Flowers", "Walking Moon", "Actors Flute Studio", "Meeing", and "Sonatina In Beat". LP, Vinyl record album

Helen Merrill & Piero UmilianiParole E Musica ... LP
RCA (Italy), 1961. Very Good+ ... $14.99 24.99
A strange and obscure session that has the cool jazz vocals of American singer Helen Merrill backed by a small Italian combo led by soundtrack composer Piero Umiliani – a wonderful mix that really makes the album an unusual one for Helen! The music was originally recorded for a TV program in Italy, and each track is preceded by an Italian voice, reciting Italian versions of the lyrics over spare musical backing – then Merrill's voice comes in with a bigger jazz group, singing each track in English – a very nice level of presentation! And although the whole thing sounds crazy, it actually works well – and gives the album a compelling edge and kind of a sexy late-night quality – with great instrumentation that includes flute from Gino Marinacci and guitar from Enzo Grillini. Tracks include "Solitude", "Everything Happens To Me", "Night & Day", "Why Don't You Do Right", and "Willow Weep For Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(180 gram Rearward pressing, with bonus CD and obi.)

Easy Tempo (Italy), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This great series keeps on redefining itself! While previous volumes have focused on funky, jazzy, and Latiny cuts – this fab 8th volume features a beautiful blend of tracks with a spare easy feel, and an exploration into the Italian minimalist groove – that ethereal, almost otherwordly style heard on some of the dreamiest soundtracks by Ennio Morricone! There's a floating, lilting groove here that's as lovely as the lady on the cover – and the set's overflowing with a whopping 21 titles in all – including "Tema Di Barbara" by Alberto Baldan Bembo, "Bai Des Anges" by Walter Rizzati, "A Ciascuno Il Suo" by Luis Bacalov, "To Jean" by Berto Pisano, "I Tuoi Sospiri" by Bruno Nicolai, "Metropoli" by Gino Marinacci Ensemble, "La Famiglia Nicotera" by Piero Piccioni, "Running Fire" by Lou Stein, and "Tema B" by Paolo Vasile. ✨✧ Mulatu Astatke Featuring Fekade Amde MaskalEthio Jazz (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1970s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Mad funk from Ethiopia – classic work by the legendary Mulatu, one of Africa's heaviest artists of the 70s! Mulatu's been kind of a beathead secret for years – as most of his exotic grooves were never issued properly outside of Africa, and have only been the province of collectors who had the money and cash to get their hands on the work. The music's got a strange, other-worldly feel – a mix of bass-heavy dubby rhythms and spaced-out jazzy solos played on saxophone and electric piano – all coming together in a unique style that will blow your mind! The LP is the first-ever proper vinyl reissue of Mulatu's work – and collects together the best tracks from the recent Ethiopiques CD series, 9 titles that include "Yekatit", "Nesanet", "Sabye", "Ykermo Sew", "Asmarina", "Gubelye", "Dewel", and "Ene Alantchi Alnorem".
