✨✧ Peter StanfieldPin-Ups 1972 – Third Generation Rock N Roll ... Book
Reaktion, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Writer Peter Stanfield provides a great case for the year of 1972 as the moment when the third wave of rock and roll came into being – a moment that was especially strong on the London and New York scenes, as artists like Lou Reed, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Iggy Pop, Marc Bolan, and The New York Dolls helped push past the second wave of the Beatles, Stones, and Who – while also giving a bit of a nod to the initial wave of Elvis and Chuck Berry! The interplay of sounds, scenes, and styles here is great – and Stanfield does a great job of showing chains of trans-Atlantic influence, and the way a handful of key artists helped set the scene for changes that would last for decades to come. The hardcover book has a few really great black and white images, and a smaller amount in color – at a total of 343 pages. Book

✨✧ VariousSummer Is Icumen In – The Pagan Sound Of British & Irish Folk 1966 to 1975 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Weird work from the Wicker Man generation – that moment in British music where it often seemed like the spookiest sounds could come from the past – as you'll hear here in a huge batch of music from the acid folk revival years! Instrumentation on these tracks is mostly acoustic, but basslines and guitar parts can sometimes be electric – and both arrangements and production amplify some of the elements of the tunes in ways that really bring out eerie currents, even when the lyrics might seem more innocent! There's lots of music here we'd never heard before, mixed with surprising contributions from bigger names, all wrapped together with the genius ear for song selection that always makes these collections from the Grapefruit label so great. The 3CD set features 60 tracks in all, complete with a big booklet of notes on the artists – a great lineup that features cuts by Magnet, Third Ear Band, Parameter, Carolanne Pegg, Dry Heart, Amber, The Young Tradition, Kevin Coyne, Gallery, Lal Waterson, The Sallyangie, Horden Raikes, Chimera, Comus, JP Sunshine, Oberon, Simon Finn, Jan Dukes De Graye, Shirley Kent, Spriguns Of Tolgus, Sweeny's Men, Green Man, Parke, Archie Fisher, Pentangle, Stone Angel, Celebrated Ratliffe Stout Band, Folkal Point, Mr Fox, Heather Adrian & John, Marc Bolan, and many more. VariousUtopic Cities – Progressive Jazz In Belgium 1968 to 1979 ... LP
Sdban (Belgium), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $30.99 32.99
A pretty incredible legacy of jazz from the scene in Belgium during the late 60s and early 70s – a place that never got the kind of exposure as the jazz worlds of the UK, Scandinavia, and Germany – but one that was making some really amazing work at the time! Take the "progressive" in the title a bit loosely – this is neither prog jazz rock, nor work that's too academic to be groovy – as the groups here are often a bit funky, and play with a surprising degree of soul – just the right space between the notes to make for tunes that cross over very well to fans of American funky jazz from the 70s, with some moments that also rival the best in Brazilian 70s jazz too! The rhythms are wonderful – sometimes full-on funky, sometimes more modal and spacious – and the tracks mix electric and acoustic instrumentation perfectly – mostly instrumental, but with a few vocals from time to time. Some of the artists are ones here you might not normally associate with Belgium – and that's just because they're finally getting their due here, in a well-collected package that also illuminates the connections with a great set of notes. Titles include "Vas Y Voir" by Brussels Art Quintet, "Pathetic Dreams" by Koen De Bruyne, "Archangelo" by Raphael, "Memphis Talk" by Philip Catherine, "Naima" by Lou MacConnell, "Pro Forma 1" by Babs Robert, "Utopic Cities" by Solis Lacus, "SUS" by Placebo, "Face Reality" by Jacques & Micheline Pelzer, "Tohubohu (part 1)" by Marc Moulin, "Open Sky" by Open Sky Unit, and "Sakara" by Clarke Boland Big Band. ✨✧ VariousJazz Club – Soul Jazz ... CD
Jazzclub/Verve (Germany), 1960s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Way more than just a regular set of 60s soul jazz – as the package offers up a wide variety of styles, genres, and work from both European and American sources – all at a ridiculously low price! The set brings together 18 numbers from key 60s labels like Verve, MPS, and Impulse – all grooving together nicely in an upbeat mode that brings in plenty of Latin, Brazilian, and slightly funky touches too! All these tunes are plenty darn hip – longtime favorites at Dusty Groove that include "Jive Samba" by Peter Herbholzheimer, "Crickets Sing For Anamaria" by Marcos Valle, "Evil Ways" by Willie Bobo, "Terra Samba" by Fritz Pauer, "Um Grao De Areia" by Clarke Boland Big Band, "Cubano Chant" by Wolfgang Dauner Trio, "For Mods Only" by Chico Hamilton, "Love & Happiness" by Monty Alexander, "The Fakir" by Cal Tjader, "Big Schlepp" by Dave Pike Set, "Watermelon Man" by Jon Hendricks, "Why & How" by Mark Murphy, and "Sunshine Of Your Love" by Ella Fitzgerald. Dave RemingtonChicago Shouts! ... LP
Universal, 1968. Very Good ... $6.99
A very groovy lost relic of the Chicago studio jazz scene of the 60's. Trombonist Dave Remington leads a groovy pop jazz band that includes Les Hooper on drums, John Klemmer on tenor, and Irene Kral on vocals. There's a number of nice tracks that have a cool soundtrack sound to them, especially cuts like "Unlit Room" and "Without Rhyme Or Reason", which have very swingin' vocals by Kral. Kind of a mix between Hugo Montenegro and the Clarke/Boland Big Band – and with a very groovy groove. Other cuts include "Lonly Pircus", "Here's Hoyle", "March Winds", and "Last Summer's Spell". ✨✧ Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandToshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band Live At Newport Vol 2 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1977. Used ... Out Of Stock
A second great performance from the Akioshi/Tabackin Big Band's performance at Newport in 1977 – and one we like even more than the first! The sound here is totally great – hard, focused, and flowing with a magical energy that made this group one of the few large jazz bands to flourish strongly in the 70s. There's almost a Clarke Boland legacy going on here – tightness that's really hard to carry off, but lots of long track that let the key soloist stretch out with boldly-voiced individual tones. Titles include the always-great "Warning Success May Be Hazardous To Your Health" – plus "Road Time Shuffle", "March Of The Tadpoles", and the extended "Minamata" suite. CD
(2006 Japanese pressing – still sealed with obi!)
