Nitai DasguptaSongs Of India ... LP
Mushroom/Manufactured, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.99
Beautiful vocal work from Nitai Dasgupta – a singer in the Indian classical tradition, but working here in two different modes that are equally great! One side of the record has shorter songs that balance Dasgupta's vocals with light percussion and a bit of flute – and the other has a side-long raga that really builds slowly, with amazing energy – with accompaniment on tabla, tamboura, and sitar – stretched out in this really moody sort of way! That track is entitled "Raga Bhairava", and it's slower and spookier than most in that format – and tunes on the other side include "Kayse Jau Tore Pas", "Sajni Sajni Tere Bin", "Cham Cham Cham Cham", and "O Ganga Tu Bahati Ja". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition of 500!)

✨✧ Santiago (Neftali Santiago)22 Somerset Drive – 1976 to 1978 ... CD
Manufactured, Mid 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Never-heard work from drummer Neftali Santiago – one of the founding forces of legendary funk group Mandrill – working here alone in the mid 70s, during a time when he was taking a break from the group! The music is fantastic – the best sort of 70s funk ensemble mode – maybe in the manner of Fatback Band on their earliest records, especially in the sharpness of the basslines and drums – mixed with some of that warmer, more spiritual glow that you'd find on the first two Mandrill albums for Polydor. Neftali sings on many cuts, but also really kicks it out of the park with his work on drums – heading up a few different groups here, with instrumentation that includes sax, flute, clavinet, and even a bit of minimoog. These are all unreleased tracks, but they've got a very fully-formed sound – and the whole album is a great testament to Santiago's genius, in a way that really has us underscoring his contributions to Mandrill! Titles include "Land Of The Leaping No No", "Feelin Good", "Bionic Funk", "Alone Together", "Freakin", "To & From Gamma 4", "Set It Free", "Let Out Your Beats", and "Everybody Hears But Nobody Listens". ✨✧ Brother AhhSound Awareness ... CD
Strata East/Manufactured, 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very trippy album from the enigmatic Brother Ahh – aka Robert Northern, former member of Sun Ra's Arkestra, and also a lecturer on the east coast! This album's his first, originally issued on the Strata East label – and a spacey mixture of other-worldly sounds. The first long track on the album is entitled "Beyond Yourself (The Midnight Confession)", and features a group with Ahh on flutes and "natural" sounds, plus cello by Pat Dixon, percussion by Barbara Burton, and soprano voice by Barbara Grant. The track's a "sound journey in 7 parts" – floating across space with a mystical feel that slowly unfurls. The other long track on the set is "Love Piece", a tune in which Ah plays flute along with percussion by Max Roach and the M'Boom percussion ensemble – plus a 90-voice chorus, and a short rap by Roach. Very spiritual stuff! CD

✨✧ Brother Ahh & The Sounds Of AwarenessKey To Nowhere ... CD
Manufactured/Divine, 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Cosmic righteousness from Brother Ahh – aka Robert Northern – best known for his work with Sun Ra, but a force behind some wonderfully soulful records of his own! This album's one of Ahh's later works – self-released in 1983, with a conception that's fuller than his earlier works – almost in an Alice Coltrane spiritual mode, with tracks that emphasize consciousness, healing, well being, and awareness. Ah plays flute and French horn on the album – and other instrumentation includes percussion by Nasar Abadey and Barbara Burton-Tuten, bass from Mike Bowie, harp and mbiri from Jeff Majors, and guitar from Marvin Tuten. Most tracks are instrumentals – building in a nice Phil Cohran-ish way – but a few numbers feature vocals. And titles include "Sekou", "Nature's Blues", "Key To Nowhere", "Hanifah", "Motherless Child", "Celebration", and "The Void". CD

✨✧ Milton MarshMonism ... CD
Strata East/Manufactured, 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare spiritual jazz by reed player Milton Marsh – one of the harder-to-find albums on Strata East – and one of just a couple incredible records to Marsh's name! Obscurity aside, this is prime Strata East – with some sprawling moments in a larger band formation that go just far out enough, but an overall approach that's pretty inside, very much in the label's strong 70s soul jazz tradition. There's a pretty large cast of players in action, including some legendary ones like saxophonist David Ware, percussionist Greg Bandy, Cedric Lawson on piano and others. Titles include "Vonda's Tune", the incredible "Monism" with its spoken word excerpt from Hazrat Inayat Khan's Sufi Message, nicely read by Marsh himself over an amazing mix of soulful strings and tense interplay, plus "Metamorphosis", "Community Music", "Sabotage 3 Preparations" and "Ode to Nzinga". A lost masterpiece! CD

✨✧ Pandit Kanwar Sain TrikhaThree Sitar Pieces ... LP
Mushroom/Manufactured, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Three sitar pieces from Pandit Kanwar Sain Trikha – all recorded in London at the staret of the 70s, and with a vibe that's every bit as trippy as the cover! Two of the album's tracks are especially long – and really have this open, free-flowing energy – more than meditative, as Pandit often plays with a bit of an edge, and the percussion seems to have its own sort of approach too – handled by Paul Burwell on tablas in a few different cycles, almost moving away from the sitar, then back again. Titles include "Bageshri In Teental", "Rag Desh In Dadra", and "Folk Piece In Kahrwa" – the last of which is shorter and a bit more upbeat. LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited to 500 copies!)

✨✧ David BowieZiggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars ... LP
RCA, 1973. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Arguably one of the greatest rock and roll albums of all time – and the key flowering of the partnership between David Bowie and Mick Ronson! The guitars here are heavy – so much so that the record's always crossed over big with crowds who are always suspicious of Bowie's artier work of the 70s – and represented a crucial moment when his groundbreaking music also found a large mainstream audience as well. And despite the fact that Ziggy's an androgynous space rocker with a spurious pedigree, the manufactured posturing of the album's come to be taken quite literally over the years – a vivid text of alienation, expression, and redemption – served up beautifully over a host of classic tracks that include "Five Years", "Soul Love", "Moonage Daydream", "Suffragette City", and "Ziggy Stardust" – all further proof of Bowie's 70s ability to slide in wherever he wanted with ease! LP, Vinyl record album
