Malachi Thompson with Gary BartzRising Daystar ... CD
Delmark, 1999. New Copy ... $3.99 13.99
One of those key 90s albums that has trumpeter Malachi Thompson giving an older spiritual jazz star a showcase that's maybe better than they've had in years – in this case, the great Gary Bartz, who blows alto and soprano throughout – helping Thompson hit some of the same soaring modes that he reached when working with Billy Harper! The album's really out of time – much more of a 70s spiritual session overall, and one that unfortunately was initially only ever issued on CD – with a great core group that also features Kirk Brown on piano, Harrison Bankhead on bass, and Nasar Abadey – plus occasional added work from Steve Berry on trombone, Tony Carpenter on percussion, and the great Dee Alexander on vocals. Alexander sings on "Surrender Your Love" – and other titles include "Mansa", "Nefertiti", "Song For Morgan", "Circles In The Air", and "Busy Little Fingers". CD

✨✧ Muhal Richard Abrams featuring Malachi FavorsSightsong ... LP
Black Saint, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic record – and one of the warmest, most soulful sets we've ever heard from Muhal Richard Abrams! The album features Muhal's piano alongside the bass of Malachi Favors – a really unique duo outing that unlocks a whole new side of both players, especially Favors, who really seems to have a presence here that's different than usual – a bubbling, effervescent sense of soul that really buoys up the whole record, and helps Abrams hit these beautifully lyrical tones on the piano. We can't recommend this one highly enough, and the tracks include "W.W. (Dedicated to Wilbur Ware)", "JG", "Way Way Way Down Yonder", "Unity", and "Two Over One". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MalachiHoly Music ... LP
Verve, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A very tripped-out set of meditation music – issued by Verve in the late 60s, and arguably even more spacey and atmospheric than some of Tony Scott's similar records for the label at the time! Malachi is actually John Morgan Newbern – working here in a spare setting to capture the "evening vibrations" of a single night in 1966 – served up through instrumentation that includes low-end percussion, acoustic guitar, and a fair bit of Jew's harp – played by Steve Cunningham (of Red Crayola fame), but drifting out slowly over the longer tracks in the set. The album's an early example of the extremes that 60s labels used to address the growing interest in Eastern ideals at the time – and it's much less commercial than some of the more gimmicky sessions of the decade. Titles include "Wednesday – Second", "Wednesday – Sixth", "Wednesday – Fourth", "Wednesday – Fifth", and "Wednesday – Eighth". LP, Vinyl record album

Joshua Abrams QuartetUnknown Known ... CD
Rogue Art (France), 2013. Used ... $9.99 11.99
A beautiful date from bassist Josh Abrams – a player who's lent his soulful talents to so many great Chicago sessions over the past decade or two – really coming into his own as a leader! Josh has this deeply spiritual approach to his instrument – a style that, back when he first started making waves in Chicago in the 90s, nobody else was really handling that well – a mode that goes back to older players like Malachi Favors, Larry Ridley, or even Bill Lee – all of whose 70s work would be a good comparison for Abrams' energy. Here, he really shows his rich vision, and unfolds some excellent original compositions – tunes that have an airy spirituality, and which are played beautifully with like-minded Chicagoans – a quartet with David Boykin on tenor, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, and Frank Rosaly on drums. The vibes and bass are especially wonderful together – and titles include "Bottom Goes The Moon", "Unknown Known", "Settle Down", "Look Through It", and "Leavening". CD

✨✧ Fred AndersonBlack Horn Long Gone ... CD
Katalyst/Southport, 1993. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A long-lost session from Chicago tenorist Fred Anderson – recorded in the early 90s, but only just released! The album's a treasure from a time when Anderson wasn't as well-documented as he's been in recent years – and it's got a beautifully open sort of sound – just a spare trio, with the great Malachi Favors on bass and Arajamu on drums. Anderson's tone is wonderful – deeply soulful, and almost more focused than on some other records – burning with a low flame intensity that reminds us of similar late 60s moments from Albert Ayler or Kalaparusha – points when they're more inside than usual, but in a great way. Favors' bass work is a treat, as always – and gets plenty of space to shine here – and in a way, it may well be the understated drums of Arajamu that make the whole session click so nicely. Titles include "Ode To Clifford Jordan", "Wandering", "Our Theme", "Saxoon", "Three On Two", "Bernice", "The Strut Time", and "Malachi's Tune". CD

Atlantic, 1974. Used ... $14.99
A beautiful little record from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – and although performed for a bigger label than some of their previous indie outings, the set may be one of the most dynamic the group ever recorded! Atlantic Records is clearly giving the group a lot of space here – as they're recording in Chicago, in a relatively free setting – able to stretch out and change things up with amazing energy – never just free jazz exploration, but a very rich, complicated, well-considered approach to their many layers of instrumentation and rhythm! Muhal Richard Abrams makes a great guest appearance on the record – adding in some wonderful piano passages – and the set includes the usual mix of reeds, percussion, and vocals – plus the beautiful bass work of Malachi Favors. Tracks include "Nonaah", "The Key", "Tnoona", and "Fanfare For The Warriors". CD

Art Ensemble Of ChicagoGreat Black Music – Jackson In Your House ... LP
BYG/Charly (UK), 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 32.99
The Art Ensemble at the height of their powers – really letting loose on the Parisian scene of the late 60s, where they found a great audience for all the new ideas they'd been brewing up back home! The album's definitely one that has the group's unique ethos coming into focus – that sense of spontaneous collective creativity spawned by their AACM contemporaries, but delivered with the special sort of playful energy of the group – as they effortlessly shift instruments, switch modes, and find a way to resonate wonderfully as a group without sacrificing their individual voices! Everyone plays percussion and other instruments – with Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds, Lester Bowie on trumpet, and Malachi Favors on bass – on titles that include "Song For Charles", "Ericka", "A Jackson In Your House", and "Get In Line". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoGreat Black Music – Message To Our Folks ... CD
BYG/Actuel (UK), 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 23.99
One of the key records that helped establish the genius of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago at the end of the 60s – a session that was recorded on the Paris scene, where the early quartet were really starting to rub shoulders with, and influence a range of different European players – maybe no surprise, when you hear the brilliance of an album like this! There's a bit more bite here than on some of the more spacious AEC performances overseas – really bold energy that comes across on the first few minutes of the record, which have this wonderfully righteous quality – augmented by shouts and calls – on tunes that maybe also have a bit more structure than some other material from the period too. The session was recorded at the Saravah studios, and seems to echo some of the criss-crossing experiments of that famous spot – heard on the Ensemble's classic album with Brigitte Fontaine – and the set features a magnificent mish-mash of sounds from Lester Bowie on trumpet, Malachi Favors on bass, both Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell on a variety of saxes and reeds, and the whole group on percussion! The set features the tracks "Old Time Religion", "Dexterity", "Rock Out", and the side-long "A Brain For The Seine" – which covers the whole second half of the record, and really sets the tone for the group's experiments to come. ✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoUrban Magic ... CD
Musica Jazz (Italy), 1997. Used ... $16.99
A lesser-known set from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a CD originally packaged with an Italian magazine, now presented here on its own! The performance is from 1997 – and the group features Lester Bowie on trumpet, Roscoe Mitchell on reeds, Malachi Favors on bass and percussion, and Don Moye on assorted percussion – all in a style that shows all the relaxed, confident modes of the group in their mature years. The ensemble's almost more compelling here than on some of their better-circulated sides from the 70s – as they really know what they're doing, where they're going, and what each of them can bring to the table – a familiarity that allows the group to shift modes easily without sounding like they're dropping the ball, in was that flesh out nicely, like some of Sun Ra's senior sides. Titles include "Urban Magic", "Mama Wants You", "Dancer", "Chant", "Horn Web", "Odwalla", and "Strawberry Mango". CD

A strong overview of sounds made by trumpeter Lester Bowie at ECM Records in the 80s – and a set that focuses more on his own work as a leader than his recordings with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago! A few tracks feature Bowie's work with his Brass Fantasy group – a great larger ensemble filled with well-matched players who really explore some compelling new patterns – including Stanton Davis and Malachi Thompson on trumpets, Craig Harris and Steve Turre on trombone, and Vincent Chancey on French horn – on "When The Spirit Returns" and "B Funk". Another set of tracks features enigmatic solo performances by Bowie – "Deb Deb's Face", "Fraudulent Fanfare", and "Almost Christmas". And the set also features "Rose Drop", by a quartet with Donald Smith on celeste; "Let The Good Times Roll" by a group with Ari Brown on sax and Fontella Bass and David Peaston on vocals; and "Charlie M" with the Art Ensemble. Virgin, 1988. Used ... $4.99 8.99
A cooker of a record from Lester Bowie – one that takes the earlier sound of the Brass Fantasy ensemble, and focuses it into a mode that shows his growing love of soul and funk! The set was issued on the the short-lived Venture imprint of Virgin – a surprisingly strong outlook for creative projects like this – and the vibe's quite different than the Brass Fantasy records cut for ECM – with almost a bit more soul at the bottom, and a compact sort of energy that really sends the ideas home. Players include Bowie, Stanton Davis, Malachi Thompson, and Sasul Siddik on trumpets – plus Steve Turre and Frank Lacy on trombones, Vincent Chancey on French horn, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Phil Wilson on drums. Titles include a surprisingly great remake of "Thriller" – plus "Vibe Waltz", "I Am With You", "Duke's Fantasy", "Personality", and "Twilight Dreams". CD

✨✧ Kahil El'Zabar's Ritual TrioAncestors Are Amongst Us ... CD
Katalyst, Early 90s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing lost recording from Kahil El'Zabar – and a Ritual Trio record to rival the great sessions cut for the Sound Aspects label in the 80s! As on some of those records, this one features Kahil's beautiful percussion blended with the bass work of Malachi Favors and trumpet of Lester Bowie – both players who step out here in ways that are even more soulful and spiritual than their performances with the Art Ensemble of Chicago! The tracks are very lean, organic, and build beautifully during the course of the recording – these thoughtfully-flowing numbers that are a perfect summation of the essence that Kahil was trying to get at with the Ritual Trio – almost a more spiritual, righteous take on the Great Black Music ideas forged by the AACM – taken to territory that was even more naturalistic than before. Favors' playing is amazing – and the recording is a perfect example of why his work on bass has always been so revolutionary – and Bowie is really at his best too, with none of the hoke that he could sometimes pick up in his later years. Titles include "Inner Sanctum", "Ju Ju Call", "In The Belly Of Now", "Dawning Of The Aware Ones", "The Ancestors Are Among Us", and "Celestial Dance". CD

Andrew HillTime Lines ... CD
Blue Note, 2006. Used ... $3.99
A bold return to Blue Note for pianist Andrew Hill – his first record for the label in over 15 years, and a record that echoes with the modern tones of Hill's legendary Blue Note run in the 60s! The sound here is a bit more starkly modern and obtuse – done with more of a sense of space than Hill's tenser 60s recordings, in a way that's almost a more contemplative reflection of the "new thing" ideal. All tracks are originals, and Andrew is working with a quintet that includes Charles Tolliver on trumpet, Greg Tardy on tenor and bass clarinet, John Hebert on bass, and Eric McPherson on drums. Hill and Tolliver seem to dominate the record, though – musing gently, but starkly on their respective instruments – on a set of tracks that includes "Malachi", "Time Lines", "Smooth", "Whitsuntide", and "For Emilio". ✨✧ Roscoe MitchellBefore There Was Sound ... CD
Nessa, 1965. Used ... $11.99
Some of the earliest work from AACM legend Roscoe Mitchell – tracks recorded before his legendary Sound album, hence the title – finally appearing here for the first time ever! Even in 1965, Mitchell is way ahead of his time – working at a free-thinking, free-wheeling approach to jazz that's a bit more New York than later Chicago music – but still completely amazing! Roscoe opens up on alto, often in tandem with trumpeter Fred Berry – in a group that also features Malachi Favors on bass and Alvin Fiedler on drums – a very open-ended combo that moves forward with boundless energy. There's echoes here of the best modern moments from Archie Shepp, Ted Curson, and Ornette Coleman in the 60s – and the long-overdue release of this music is a real cause for celebration – especially given that the package features lots of detailed history and helpful notes. Titles include "Mr Freddy", "Green", "Outer Space", "Akhenaten", "And There Was Peace", and "Jo Jar". CD

Roscoe MitchellOld/Quartet Sessions ... CD
Nessa, 1967/1975. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99 19.99
The only recorded work of this crucial group on the Chicago scene of the late 60s – a pre-Art Ensemble quartet that features Roscoe Mitchell on reeds, Lester Bowie on trumpet, and Malachi Favors on bass – as well as drummer Philip Wilson, who'd later depart for work in a blues group! The sound here is completely formative – already very strongly in the AACM tradition, but also with some ties to late 50s/early 60s modernism – especially on the tune "Old", which has more rhythmic progression than you might expect from the players – a vibe that's almost like the Art Ensemble taking on late nite soul jazz! That cut is followed by the freely improvised "Quartet" – which spins out in an organic way that really lets you know what the famous trio would soon be doing in the Art Ensemble – followed by a sublime "Solo" piece from Roscoe. 2CD edition brings in all the other material recorded at the sessions – "Trio (Oh Susanna)" and "Quartet No 1", plus the shorter "Theme Statements" and "Tats-Matoes (Rehearsal)". Beautiful work from the Brooklyn scene of the early 80s – at a moment when it seemed like some of the more spiritual styles of the 70s had fallen out of mainstream favor, but were still being served up beautifully on obscure records like this! Mustafa Abdul Rahman isn't just a tenor player, as he works here as a fantastically majestic leader – leading a small combo through sounds that soar to the heavens on righteous energy – often with vocals from Odell Grier, and delivered with instrumentation from Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, Richard Radu Williams on bass, Rafik Abdul Rahim on piano, Gregg Bufford on drums, and Babafumi Akunyon on congas and percussion. There's a spirit here that's a bit like Abdullah's own record of the period, and other players come into the mix from time to time – including a young Malachi Thompson, who plays trumpet on one track. Titles include the originals "Polygamy", "Silent World", and "God Is" – plus a take on Coltrane's "Some Other Blues", and the more traditional standards "Afternoon In Paris" and "One & Only Love". A crucial album from Archie Shepp – one that finds him enjoying new freedoms on the French scene at the end of the 60s – which then helps him take off from his earlier Impulse Records modes, at a level he'd then bring back to the label in the early 70s! There's a very free-thinking sense of combination here – as Shepp is breaking down from his idea of a more unified sound in the material – and opens the door at points to work from Jeanne Lee on voice and Chicago Beau and Julio Finn on harmonicas – in a lineup that also includes Malachi Favors on bass, Dave Burrell on piano, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. These are long, spiritual tracks that comprise some of his best European recordings of the time, and the titles include "There is a Balm in Gilead", "Touareg", "Blase", and "My Angel" – plus a strong reading of "Sophisticated Lady" – which maybe points the way towards some of the Shepp experiments in the late 70s. A wonderfully wide-ranging tribute to the great John Coltrane – served up here in a whole host of tracks recorded after his too-early death, each of which take his musical message in different directions! A huge run of greatness from Roscoe Mitchell – one of the most important musicians to come out of the AACM scene in Chicago, and a player who may well have been one of the best to really flower in the freedoms offered by the Black Saint/Soul Note label! By the time of these records, Mitchell had already made classic albums on his own, and with the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – but these sides represent Roscoe reaching great new heights as a leader – trying out a variety of different groups and new ideas, and both expanding the overall AACM palette, while also reaching out to new scenes as well. Every record is a little bit different, and the groups are too – as Mitchell works with his Sound Ensemble that includes Hugh Ragin and Spencer Barefield, the Sound & Space Ensembles with Mike Mossman and Tom Buckner, the Roscoe Mitchell Quartet with Malachi Favors and Steve McCall, the Note Factory with Matthew Shipp and William Parker, a Sextet with Muhal Richard Abrams and Anthony Davis, and in duets with Borah Bergman on one record, and Muhal Richard Abrams on another! Archie Shepp at his spiritual best – recording in Paris in 1969, and absorbing a heck of a lot pan-African influences! Shepp's in the lead on tenor – working with a great lineup of up-and coming avant geniuses – Clifford Thortnton on cornet, Lester Bowie on trumpet, Roscoe Mitchell on bass saxophone, Dave Burrell on piano, Malachi Favors on bass, Philly Joe Jones and Sunny Murray on drums – and the unusual addition of Art Taylor on "rhythm logs" and Laurence Devereaux on balafon! The centerpiece of the album is the amazing "Yasmina" – a long track that builds with passion and fire, pulsing with an intensity that you'd expect more from Pharoah Sanders than Shepp himself. Next up is "Sonny's Back", a wonderful straight jazz groover with Archie and Hank Mobley on twin tenors upfront – making a rare and memorable recorded appearance together! A wonderfully wide-ranging tribute to the great John Coltrane – served up here in a whole host of tracks recorded after his too-early death, each of which take his musical message in different directions! The sound is certainly spiritual – in keeping with the different volumes in this long-running series – but there's a nice mix of expressions and instrumentation, offering up a journey into John Coltrane's important influence on so many different spheres of jazz – far more than you might expect! And this isn't just a set of Coltrane remakes or covers, either, as new songs are mixed with familiar ones – in a well-chosen batch of tracks that includes "Trane" by Carmelo Garcia, "Transition" by Malachi Thompson, "John Coltrane" by Clifford Jordan, "Naima" by Darwin Strickland Trio, "Terre Engloutie" by Gilles Torrent Jazztet, "To Trane" by Carsten Meinert Kvartet, "Welcome" by Norman Connors, "Ole" by Sonny Fortune, and "Naima" by Jack McDuff. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Art Ensemble Of Chicago with Don PullenLive At The Frankfurt Jazz Festival – June 1 1991 ... CD
AEOC, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
A rare meeting of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago and the late pianist Don Pullen – recorded at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival in 1991, and easily one of the group's greatest sessions from this period! There's a freely creative spirit here that reminds us a lot of the Art Ensemble's best European performances of years back – especially on the 20 minute opening reading of "People In Sorrow", which has an ethereal sound built up from percussion, in a way that's almost more haunting than the original. Pullen's piano takes on a bit more presence on the tracks "Song For Atala" and "Fundamental Destiny" – both of which show the skill for more tightly arranged horn parts that the Ensemble picked up during the 80s – but still delivered here with enough loose, spontaneous energy to stand apart from some of their studio work of the decade. Pullen delivers a strong pulse on the latter track especially – and continues into a straighter, soaring jazz groove on "Odwalla/The Theme", which closes the set. Lester Bowie plays trumpet, Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell are on woodwinds and percussion, Malachi Favors on bass, Don Moye on Sun percussion, and Don Pullen on piano. CD

The album's billed to drummer Claude Delcloo, who's got a wonderful touch on the kit – but it's also got plenty of leadership from alto saxophonist Arthur Jones - as the pair work with a fantastic group that have a very AACM spirit – thanks to work from Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman on reeds, Clifford Thornton on congas, Malachi Favors on log drums, and Earl Freeman on gong and percussion! Kenneth Terroade is also on the set on reeds too – the album features the long title track as its single performance – an improvisation that moves between spareness and density in the best AACM style. One of the few albums we've ever seen by keyboardist Hubert Eaves – a great player whose work crops up on some of our favorite 70s soul jazz and jazz funk sides, but who rarely got a chance to lead his own group! Fortunately, he did get the chance to cut this one – as the session's a real doozy – sweet mellow fusion, handled very soulfully, with a kicked-back feel that's right up there with the most righteous soulful fusion of the time. Players include Mtume, John Lee, Reggie Lucas, Malachi Thompson, and Rene McLean – and Cheryl Alexander sings vocals on the track "Under Standing". A great blend of laidback funk and soulful grooves – in the manner of Bobby Lyle at his best – and titles include "Slow Down", "Painful Pleasure", "Call To Awareness", and "Flead Dancing". CD

The Ritual Trio gets some mighty hip company here – the legendary Pharoah Sanders, who really fleshes out the group's sound with his tremendous work on tenor sax! Core members Ari Brown and Malachi Favors work as a well-tooled unit under the leadership of Kahil El Zabar – no surprise, given that all three had been working together for a decade and a half by the time of this recording. And with Sanders on tenor for the date, Brown plays a bit more piano than his usual reeds – letting Pharoah spin out soulful, spiritual lines that break somewhat from the more rhythmic approach that's usually used by the group. Favors' basswork is a real pleasure, as always – an earthy grounding that helps keep Kahil El Zabar in focus – and titles on the record include two takes of "Ka-Real", plus "Africanos/Latinos", "Miles Mode", "Autumn Leaves", "Africa N'Da Blues", and "Pharoah's Song". Chief (UK), 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
A crucial record from Roscoe Mitchell – a set that builds both on his important solo work, and his musical discoveries with the Art Ensemble of Chicago – but which also opens up the more sonic territory that would soon set Mitchell and a few other colleagues apart, and open up even more possibilities for experimentation in the AACM! The set begins with "LRG" – a trio piece with two key collaborators – George Lewis on trombones and sousaphone, and Leo Smith on trumpets – both working with Mitchell, who blows piccolo, flute, oboe, clarinet, soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxes – in these amazing ranges of sounds, tones, and shapes – almost a catalog of improvisational possibilities. "The Maze" is even more striking – less reed work, and instead a piece done for eight percussionists – with an unlikely lineup that features Anthony Braxton, Malachi Favors, Joseph Jarman, Douglas Ewart, Don Moye, Thurman Barker, Mitchell, and Henry Threadgill – in this moody, choppy piece that runs for twenty minutes. Last up is "S II Examples" – probably our favorite – as it's got Roscoe playing solo soprano in a long tone-oriented piece that sounds a lot more like some electronic instrument than it does a soprano sax – further proof that he was really doing tremendous things at the time! "Suns Of Africa" takes up all of side one, and although it begins slow, and with spare soloing, it moves into a slow rhythmic pulse that pulls along all players in a moving ensemble passge that sparkles with feeling and spirituality. Side 2 has two shorter pieces entitled "R.I.P.", which is more intense, and "Unity", which again moves into a mellower ensemble space. Smith is on trumpet and flugelhorn, and the trio also features pianist Anthony Davis – who was on the original record – but the lineup also includes bassist Malachi Favors, who makes a wonderful late life appearance, and gives the record a completely different vibe than the first one! Favors has a way of really grounding the proceedings – of doing a hell of a lot with just a little – these beautifully-shaped lines on the acoustic bass that balance out the freedom of Smith's horn and edges of Davis' piano – in ways that again remind us why Malachi was such an important presence in the Art Ensemble Of Chicago. A haunting set of solo tracks by cellist Abdul Wadud – an important, and oft-overlooked, figure in the 70s loft jazz scene! Wadud plays cello throughout, but in a style that's extremely inventive – and much more in the vein of bass improvisation by players in a tradition that includes Malachi Favors and Barre Phillips, with a bit of a nod to the violin work of Leroy Jenkins – really using the instrument in all these sorts of amazing ways, and totally breaking the role of the cello from that in more compositional music – and firmly establishing it as a tremendous instrument for improvising in jazz! The interplay between the high and low regions of the instrument is especially nice – with a tonal majesty that's breathtaking – and there's also this rhythmic quality to many numbers that's very different than more way-out bass improvisations. An incredible package – and one that features three of the most important records ever cut by the Art Ensemble Of Chicago! All three albums were recorded at the Saravah Studios in the summer of 1969 – during a time when the Art Ensemble of Chicago were making big waves on the Parisian scene (including their work in the film Les Stances A Sophie) – and finding a way to refine their new Chicago sound in the world away from the Windy City! These were the albums that really put the Art Ensemble on the map – letting them find new freedoms, and reach new heights in expression – in a mode that even surpassed previous recordings by individual members back home. The lineup is very heavy on reeds – with a variety played by Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman – and features bold trumpet from Lester Bowie, warm basslines from Malachi Favors, and a range of percussion and other instruments by all members of the group! One of the best post-Paris live dates by the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – recorded right on their southside home turf in Chicago, as something of a homecoming after their years abroad! The performance is really one continuous piece, divided up into chapters – and it starts off with an intensity that's bolder than much of the group's previous recordings – an almost-free sort of sound that's quite raw, and which must have been a great way to announce their presence back on the Chicago scene. As the piece moves on, it slows a bit in pace, and opens up more in mood – but always has an edge that's quite distinct – almost free of some of the wit that marked the Ensemble's work from a few years before. The core lineup features Lester Bowie on trumpet and flugelhorn, Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman on saxes, Malachi Favors on bass, and Don Moye on drums and percussion – but as always, all players get their hands on plenty of other instruments during the performance – an array of horns, gongs, bells, whistles, bike horns, and more – all used to great effect! Sections of the work are titled "Duffvipels", "Checkmate", "Dautalty", and "Mata Kimasu". CD

Tracks are all nice and long, and build in that beautifully spiritual style that made Kahil one of the real standouts on the Chicago scene in the period – one of the few cats who didn't just go avant for freedom's sake, and instead worked in this open, flowing, soulful style that nobody else was touching at the time! The title cut's a great illustration of this approach – a really beautiful 16 minute cut that draws gentle modal energy from interplay between bass and kalimba, then lets Brown really stretch out over the top – and the other tracks follow strongly, with a wonderfully organic approach. Ramsey Lewis had such great success with his first album of Christmas instrumentals for Chess Records, he soon hopped back in the studio for a second record – but one with a very distinct difference! This time around, the trio's a bit unusual – in that it features regular bassist Eldee Young, but also the great Steve McCall on drums – a percussionist who'd later really flourish in the 70s, and gain great fame for his work in the group Air! The presence of McCall is no surprise, though – Malachi Favors and Muhal Richard Abrams also make appearances on early 60s Chess jazz albums – but it does give the record a nicely special sort of sound, as does the added instrumentation on some tracks too. One of the most spiritual albums to come from the young AACM movement in Chicago – a session that's somewhat equal in expression to some of the best post-Coltrane work on Impulse Records! Maurice McIntyre plays here with a sound that's already fully formed – an approach to the tenor that's as searingly human as that of Pharoah Sanders or Albert Ayler – but which is also played with a sharpness at times that recalls a young Marion Brown. The rest of the group is equally well-matched – a tremendous array of talent from the Chicago scene, with Malachi Favors on bass, Thurman Barker and Ajaramu on drums, Leo Smith on trumpet and flugelhorn, John Stubblefield on soprano sax, and Amina Claudine Myers on piano. George Hines vocalizes a bit on a few tracks – singing in a spiritual tone that's somewhat like Leon Thomas, but much freer and more abstract – and the album beautifully balances shorter musical statements with a fuller suite on side two – showing the deeper, more ambitious expressions that were starting to well up in the AACM. Titles include the tremendous "Humility In The Light Of Creator", plus "Hexagon", "Kcab Emoh", "Pluto Calling", "Life Force", and "Suite – Ensemble Fate". ✨✧ Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyreLive From Studio Rivbea – Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre July 12, 1975 ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic loft jazz session from the great reedman Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre – working here at a time when his genius was really unbridled, and his work on tenor was taking off even more strongly than on some of his early contributions to the AACM scene in Chicago! The set marks a much-needed example of Kalaparusha at work during a time when he was not that well-recorded – the set lies between his two early Delmark albums and his Japanese record on Baystate – and the whole thing is every bit as tremendous as you might expect, and a fantastic demonstration not only of the spiritual, soulful energy that made McIntyre so special, but also the way that his time on the New York scene was maybe bringing a sense of resonance there with earlier Chicago spirits. The group is great – with a young Malachi Thompson on trumpet, Alvin Fiedler on drums, and Milton Suggs on electric bass – an instrument that creates some pulsations that really hold the whole thing together – on three long improvisations that make up the album. ✨✧ Roscoe MitchellLRG/The Maze/S II Examples ... CD
Nessa, 1978.
✨✧ Sunny MurrayHommage To Africa ... LP
BYG/Actuel (France), 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the more spiritual sessions for BYG, and a large ensemble session that brings together players like Archie Shepp, Malachi Favors, Roscoe Mitchell, Grachan Moncur, and Clifford Thornton. Certainly one of our favorite albums on BYG, and one that we find ourselves returning to more than others on the label! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sunny MurraySunshine/An Even Break (Never Give A Sucker) ... CD
BYG/Fuel 2000, 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 of Sunny Murray's classic sides for the BYG label, on one CD! Sunshine is one of Sunny's rarest from the time – and a full-on session that features Lester Bowie, Arthur Jones, Roscoe Mitchell, Archie Shepp, Kenneth Terroade, Dave Burrell, and Malachi Favors. The large group wails mightily, with a spiritual edge that's a bridge between Murray's New York avant roots and some of the late 60s work of the AACM. Side one features the extended "Flower Trane", and side two contains "Real" and "Red Cross". Even Break is one of the best-ever BYG/Actuel sessions, and one that has the unlikely pairing of east coast avant players Sonny Murray and Byard Lancaster, with Art Ensemble Of Chicago bassist Malachi Favors! Murray plays drums, and reads a bit of poetry, while the band wails behind him in powerful turgid lines of hard free jazz that represent all there is to say about the freedom of the Paris jazz scene in 1969. 4 long tracks – "Invisible Blues", "Complete Affection", "Giblets – Part 12", and "An Even Break". ✨✧ Archie SheppBlase ... LP
BYG/Actuel (France), 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Archie Shepp & Kahil El'Zabar's Ritual TrioConversations – A Tribute To Fred Hopkins ... CD
Delmark, 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful pairing of talents – the mighty Archie Shepp returned to a strongly spiritual setting on this great late-century album with the Ritual Trio of percussionist Kahil El'Zabar! The group here features Kahil's best lineup – fantastic bass from the late Malachi Favors, and a mix of piano and a bit of tenor sax from Ari Brown – even though Shepp's the main tenor man on the date, and sounding incredible throughout – almost with a Pharoah Sanders sort of rasp and spiritualism at times! Archie definitely owes a lot to Kahil for giving him such a great format – but then again, Kahil always seems to sound best when working with a strong horn in the lead – as on his records with David Murray. Titles include "Brother Malcolm", "Revelations", "Conversations", "Big Fred", "The Dialogue", "Kari", and "Whenever I Think Of You". CD

✨✧ Abdul WadudBy Myself ... LP
Bisharra, 1977. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The whole thing's fantastic – deeply spiritual throughout – and titles include "In A Breeze", "Happiness", "Oasis", and "Kaleidoscope" LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoGreat Black Music – Message To Our Folks (180 gram pressing) ... LP
BYG/Actuel (UK), 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Some of the earliest work ever recorded by Lester Bowie as a leader – and a set that stands in importance right next to the early Delmark AACM sides by Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell! Plus, the album's almost an early Art Ensemble of Chicago effort, given the lineup – which features Bowie on trumpet and flugelhorn; Roscoe Mitchell on alto, soprano, clarinet, and flute; Malachi Favors on bass; and Joseph Jarman on alto, sopranino, and clarinet!. This fantastic CD features all the material recorded at the initial sessions in 1967 – both trio and quartet material, with titles that include trio numbers "Warm Up", "Number 2", "Number 1", and quartet takes on "Number 2". 2 landmark Archie Shepp albums in one package! Blase is filled with long, spiritual tracks that comprise some of his best European recordings of the decade, and the titles include "There is a Balm in Gilead", "Touareg", and "My Angel". The group includes Jeanne Lee on vocals, plus Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors, Dave Burrell, and Philly Joe Jones – and the whole thing has that great Paris spiritual free jazz party feel to it! Live At The Pan-African Festival was recorded in Algiers during the Pan-African Festival in 1969. The recording is a very unique one, and features Shepp's group with Grachan Moncur, Clifford Thorton, and Dave Burrell – plus lots of Algerian musicians! The sound is haunting, and the record really stands apart from Shepp's other BYG albums. Titles include "We Have Come Back" and "Brotherhood at Ketchaoua". CD
