Wayne SnowFigurine ... LP
Roche, 2021. Near Mint- ... $14.99 19.99
Wayne Snow was born in Nigeria, recorded this debut between Paris and Berlin, and comes across with the kind of globe-spanning sound that legacy might make you expect! This is future soul at its best – not warmed-over cliches from the past, but a record that has a crisp sort of contemporary vibe through and through – a lean style that does more with less, and which really brings just the right sort of focus onto Wayne's vocals when he steps into the mix! A great record that really gets right what so many others try to reach these days, but always end up messing up with a bit too much effort – not the case with Wayne Snow, as you'll hear on "Faceless", "Nina", "Seventy", "Number One", "Figurine", "Relativity", and "Magnetic". ✨✧ IncognitoTribes, Vibes, & Scribes ... CD
Verve/Talkin' Loud, 1992. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning little set from Incognito – the group's first full album on Talkin Loud records, and a set that's head and shoulders above their earlier jazz funk from the 80s! The sound here has a real "instant classic" quality – not just because it's dripping with the best references from the jazzier side of 70s soul (think Fantasy Records at its best!) – but also because it's so well put together, with a sense of instrumentation that's tight, yet an overall groove that's relaxed and fairly spontaneous – something that was quite rare at the time the record was released! Bluey is at the height of his powers here – stepping strongly into a run of great work that would last for well over a decade – and other key figures include Maysa Leak on vocals, Kevin Robinson on trumpet, and Graham Harvey and Peter Hinds on keyboards. Titles include a killer remake of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing", plus "Change", "Colibri", "Magnetic Ocean", "Closer To The Feeling", "Tribal Vibes", "Pyramid", and "I Love What You Do For Me". ✨✧ Horace SilverPrescription For The Blues ... CD
Impulse, 1997. Used ... Out Of Stock
A hokey cover, a hokey title, but a surprisingly great little record – Horace Silver's first quintet session in many many years, and a record that comes across with a really lyrical sense of soul! And sure, the album's not one of his classics for Blue Note, but the format is quite the same – tenor, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums – all woven into a warm tapestry of groove, based around some wonderful original compositions from Horace himself! The whole thing is surprisingly wonderful – especially for the date and the cover – and we'll be honest in saying that we actually passed this one up when it came out back in the 90s (effete jazz snobs we are), but we're really digging it a lot these days, and are glad we finally gave it a chance. Players include Michael Brecker on tenor and Randy Brecker on trumpet – both following Horace's lead strongly – plus Ron Carter on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. Tracks include "Walk On", "Sunrise In Malibu", "You Gotta Shake That Thing", "Whenever Lester Plays The Blues", "Free At Last", and "Brother John & Brother Gene". CD
(Digipak has a mark on the front cover from sticker removal, back cover has a magnetic security strip, mark through barcode.)

✨✧ Bill WithersJustments (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Sussex/Sony (Japan), 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
A massive 70s album from the great Bill Withers – one that's sometimes overlooked next to his huge crossover records that preceded it – but which is every bit as wonderful! Withers is still on Sussex Records, and still has that completely unique approach that made him a soul genre unto himself – a fantastic voice, a nicely acoustic core, and this sense of flow that's completely magnetic – augmented here with maybe a bit more funk than before, and some great use of keyboards too! The material has a conversational, wise and world weary tone that's brilliantly effective and more intimate than Bill's bigger hits of the day – and there's also some subtly innovative parts to the production that are really moving, from the harp accented piano on "Stories" and the funky percussion flavored rambler of a closing number "Railroad Man". Other tracks include "You", "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh", "Heartbreak Road", "Green Grass", "Ruby Lee", "Can We Pretend", "Liza", and "Make A Smile For Me". CD

✨✧ Donald SmithLuv ... CD
Why Not (Japan), 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
A soaring session of spiritual jazz piano – and one of the only albums as a leader cut by Donald Smith – best known to most folks as the brother of Lonnie Liston Smith, and a member of the Cosmic Echoes! The sound here is much more hard-edged than you might guess – starting somewhere in the McCoy Tyner realm of post-Coltrane piano lines, but also taking off at times with a fury that reminds us of Cecil Taylor – extremely deft and inventive, and spurred on by some great rhythm work from the team of Cecil McBee on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums! A few moments get a bit more introspective, balancing things out nicely – and McBee's bass is a wonderful addition to the set, as he plays with the power and soulfulness he brought to the best Strata East sessions of the early 70s. Titles include "Mystic Man", "Stillness", "To Yaisa & Wanda With Luv", and "The Magnetic A". CD
(Includes the slipcase and obi!)
