✨✧ Madlib & OthersMadlib's Medicine Show No 7 – High Jazz ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2010. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Quite possibly our favorite installment so far in the Madlib Medicine Show series – as the set's a treasure trove of rare work from the many-faceted Yesterday's New Quintet combo – that genius funky jazz ensemble headed by Madlib! According to the notes, some of these cuts are from rare small-batch releases (although we're not even sure those exist) – and others are previously unreleased numbers that are finally seeing the light of day – all together a brilliant illustration of the sorts of sounds that Madlib's pulled up from the American underground of the 60s and 70s – weird space jazz, offbeat funk, modal moments, and more – played with completely amazing rhythms, and production that really lives up to the spirit of the inspirations! There's plenty of great keyboards, and all tracks are instrumentals – with titles that include "High Jazz" by The Kenny Cook Octet, "Pretty Eyes" by Jahari Massamba Unit, "Electronic Dimensions" by Generation Match, "Funky Butt (part 1)" by Poyser Riggins & Jackson, "Space & Time" by RMC, "Conquistador" by Yesterday's New Quintet, "Tarzan's Theme" by Big Black Foot Band, and "Kimo" by Joe McDuphrey Experience. Madlib & OthersMadlib's Medicine Show Number 11 – Low Budget Hi Fi Music ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2010. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Low Budget Hi Fi Music from Madlib – the eleventh entry in his epic Madlib's Medicine Show series – 28 tracks of hip hop unofficially dubbed the Dirty Demos! The set feature sample enriched instrumentals by Madlib as Loop Digga and collaborations with Strong Arm Steady, J Rocc, Madlib & Oh No as The Professionals, Guity Simpson, AG & Frank Nitt. It's great stuff, natch – finding Madlib in a straighter hip hop mode production wise – but straighter Madlib production has unexpected twists and turns! Loads of funky samples, some recognizable others otherworldly – and beats that range from dusty funk to dramatically soulful. Includes "The Sound Of Champions" (inst), "Charlie Hustle" by Strong Arm Steady, "Sam", "Snakes 101" by MED, "Girls" by J Rocc, "Love/Hate" (inst), "The Adventurs Of Soul Bra And Docta Dick'em Pts 1 & 2", "Hold Up" by The Professionals, "Thoughts Of An Old Flame" by Guilty Simpson and others. ✨✧ Madlib & OthersMadlib's Medicine Show Number 12 – Raw Medicine – Madlib Remixes ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2011. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The supposed conclusion in the madly epic Medicine Show series from Madlib – Number 12, and it's a hazy, funky, rawly brilliant batch of hip hop remixes from the mid 00s onward – 60+ minutes and 30+ unlisted tracks that's pretty much quintessential Madlib hip hop! We're not going to give away too many of the secrets here, it's best self-discovered – but you'll hear Madlib's unique style as applied to the rhymes of MCs who are famous, some stridently underground, some legendary, some still rising. Great stuff to conclude a surprisingly great series – we've long-loved the 'Lib, but we're really surprised out how masterfully he pulled off such a lengthy, hastily released series, while keeping the quality so high throughout! ✨✧ Madlib & OthersMadlib's Medicine Show No 3 – Beat Konducta In Africa ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2010. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Raw crackling hip hop funk beatcraft at its deepest from mighty Madlib – working in his Beat Konducta style for this third entry in the epic Madlib's Medicine Show Series! Beat Konducta In Africa is a hazy hip hop instrumental set from 'Lib (lest you thought it might be a funky compilation of rare African material) with some additional mixing from J Rocc – based on rare African vinyl. The sound is pure Madlib/Beat Konducta heady hip hop funk – recognizable as being spun from and inspired by African material, and impeccably so, with that instantly identifiable, exploratory Madlib sonic stamp. He looks far beyond Afrobeat and funk sources, with some raw funk rock beats, psych, garage and more with some trippy vocal samples – and he's building up from blueprints records originally pressed all over Africa – Zambia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Botswana and Ivory Coast. But too much mention of the source material risks making this sound like a compilation or a mix set, when it's Madlib all the way! Titles include "Motherland", "Raw Introduction To Afreaka", "Warrior's Theme", "Street Hustler", "Afritonic" (Pts 1 & 2), "Tradition", "Blackfire", "Obtaive", "Mtima", "African Bounce", "Freedom Play", "Natural Sound Waves", "Unika (Outro)" and many more. 43 tracks on the CD version, which includes 6 bonus tracks. Madlib Invazion, 1990s/Early 2000s/2010. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Formative Madlib beatcraft – music made by 'Lib from 1990-2000 – crafted into a tight full length album that feels as fresh as ever! History Of The Loop Digga features funky hip hop instrumentals made at a time when he was producing underground beat tapes for himself and the Crate Diggas Palace crew of MCs. Raw Madlib hip hop beats from the early days with spackled with bits of vocals from Madlib & his Quasimoto alter ego, Declaime and others, plus mad vocal samples. At the core, it's excellent leftfield hip hop productions that aptly predicts for the unbridled genius to come, mixed in 2010 and feeling very much of the here and now. 34 shortish tracks on the CD for more than an hour of modern vintage Madlib. ✨✧ MadlibShades Of Blue – Madlib Invades Blue Note (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note/Music On Vinyl (UK), 2003. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Madlib invades Blue Note! He gets free reign of the catalog for this mix of sampler genius and live band interpretations, too, as/with Ahmad Miller, Yesterdays New Quintet, Malcolm Catto, Medaphoar, and others from the Stones Throw camp. This one's truly a conceptual triumph, if there ever was such a thing – one of the greatest hip hop producers alive, given carte blanche with the source beats of the century! Madlib's Blue Note crates are heavily weighed in the mid 60s through mid 70s electric beats that often get the shaft in mainstream jazz round-ups, but floor the beathead world into overdrive. Re-interpretations, remixes, and revisions are spliced seamlessly with the source samples, creating a whole new world where hip hop and late model live funk not only co-exists with classic Blue Note jazz, but it actually draws a linear transition between the 2 genius art forms. Beautiful stuff – if the album isn't the most original idea to come along all of these years into the hip hop & jazz underground, it's certainly one of the most perfectly realized projects of its kind, ever! It's one for the time capsule – easily one of Madlib's masterpieces, and pure funky sample wizardry by any standard! Includes Monk Higgins' "Slim's Return" interpreted by Ahmad Miller and DJ Lord Such on cuts, "Donald Byrd's "Distant Land", "Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Bounce", Yesterday's New Quintet's adaptation of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints", Madlib Invazion's "Funky Blue Note", the Joe McDuphrey Experience take on Horace Silver's/Herbie Hancock's "Peace/Dolphin Dance" and lots more. ✨✧ De La SoulGrind Date (with bonus instrumentals) ... LP
Sanctuary/BMG, 2004. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $31.99
The first post-Tommy Boy De La Soul album – and it's a winner! We've been on board with De La throughout their long career – anyone with open ears must know that even their spottiest records (and this is NOT one of those) feature at least a handful of treasure tracks. Two songs into Grinda Date you'll find the stellar "Verbal Clap", one of J Dilla's finest blueprint era inspired productions ever, with precise on beat rhymes by De La. Other highlights include "He Comes" with Ghostface, a soulful track that would sound just as great on Ghost's Supreme Clientele. At the time it came out, this was De La's best album since Stakes Is High, we might actually like this one just as much. Featuring production by Dave West, J Dilla, Madlib and 9th Wonder – plus guest appearances by Yummy, Ghostface, Carl Thomas, MF Doom, Common and others. Other tracks include "The Future", "Much More" feat Yummy, "The Grind Date", "Shopping Bags", "Days Of Our Lives" with Common, "Come On Down", "Rock Co. Kane Flow" featuring MF Doom and more. Volumes 3 & 4 in the Hi Hat Club series of Melting Pot hip hop instrumentals – the profoundly jazz centered Jazz Files set from Dexter and the Chop Shop from Brenk X Fid Mella – on a single CD! The artist at the center of the first 18 tracks on the CD is German producer & MC Dexter – crafting beats pay homage to blueprint jazzy hip hop beat geniuses like Premier this generation's jazz cognizant producers like Madlib as well as the jazz greats like Ahmad Jamal, Yusef Lateef and others. Titles include "The Future", "Piano", "One For Yusef", "Heavy Horns", "Spaceways". "Astro Thoughts", "WR Anybody", "Raw Jazz", "Sounds Great Les", "Swing Is A Must", "Sonny Ray", "Deep In The Juju" and more. Fellow Vienna producer Mella does his thing on the remaining tracks – an unpredictable mix of funky drums and spacey atmospherics, all with nicely raw edge. Dwight Trible & The Life Force TrioLove Is The Answer (plus bonus instrumentals) ... CD
Ninja Tune, 2005. Used 2 CDs ... $8.99
Soul jazz vocalist Dwight Trible gathers the forces for this magnificent effort – an album pairing his emotionally rich vocals and singular spirit with a group of largely west coast allstars – and it's pure genius! The Life Force Trio, from what we can tell, is simply the moniker for a small army of free thinking guests from the deep funk, hip hop and turntablist underground assembled by Carlos Nino of Ammon Contact. The guest list includes SA-RA, J Dilla, Madlib, Daedelus, Scienze Of Life, Nate Morgan, Dwight's Build An Ark fellows and many others. It features some vocals Dwight has laid down for other albums, and some unreleased recordings – how they pair up so intricately well, with such fresh and varied production is a beautiful mystery. This record could have merely served as an interesting exercise in combined talents, but instead it absolutely soars, and could be remembered as Dwight's masterpiece! It may also be one of the best Ninja Tune albums ever! Tracks include "Equipoise" feat SA-RA, "Freedom Dance", "The Rhythm", "Waves Of Infinite Harmony", a fresh take on Coltrane's "A Love Supreme", "Love Is The Answer", "I Was Born On Planet Rock", "Constellations" feat Super Nova, "Celestial Blues" and more. The CD also includes a bonus disc on instrumentals! CD

✨✧ J DillaShining ... CD
BBE (UK), 2006. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A glorious send off from J Dilla – with some of the most soulful productions Dilla's ever laid down – and appearances by Common, D'Angelo, Pharoahe Monch, Madlib, MED, Black Thought and others! It's impossible to listen to The Shining without considering the sad circumstances surrounding its release, and all too easy to over praise, but this record is filled timelessly inventive production – and passionate rhymes from the honored guests. A lot of the more leftfield, abstract touches that create most of the character on the Donuts LP are really on the outskirts of the sound here – a much richer, deeper, funky drum influenced batch of sounds. We're speechless. There's one more official posthumous LP in the can, and thank goodness for that. Tracks include in-your-f**kin' face intro "Geek Down" with Busta Rhymes, "E=MC2" feat Common, "Love Jones", "Love" feat Pharoahe Monch, "Baby" feat Madlib & Guilty Simpson, "So Far To Go" feat Common & D'Angelo (come back D', the world needs you), "Jungle Love" feat MED & Guilty Simpson, "Dime Piece (Remix)" feat Dwele, "Love Movin'" feat Black Thought and "Won't Do". A wonderful reimagining of the music of Thelonious Monk – one that's done in a melange of jazz and contemporary elements – in a style that's very similar to the time that Madlib visited Blue Note over a decade ago! As with that set, there's a real 21st Century vibe here – a completely new take on Monk's music – as some tracks are played live, others are sampled, and production often includes a fair bit of hip hop elements, especially beats – woven together wonderfully with the tunes. Styles vary nicely, given the different artists participating in the project – and this limited EP features the tracks "Cyberspace Love" by Wonk and "Think Of One" by Melraw with Sara Yoshida from Mononkul. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Blacksmith/Warner, 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
Kweli's debut for Warner Bros, via his own Blacksmith label – and his best work in years – back in top form after a waning couple of years on Rawkus/Interscope! Kweli laid some dynamite in the underground in the first half of the 00s letting us know he still had it even if the LPs were hit & miss, and if Eardrum isn't perfect (and a bit heavy with guest appearances), he's still dropping impossible verses over over tight production – by Madlib, Just Blaze, Pete Rock and others! A very strong set from veteran who still might have his best work ahead of him. Includes "Everything Man", "My Weather Report", Hostile Gospel", "Say Something" with Jean Grae, "Country Cousins" feat UGK & Raheem Devaughn, "Holy Moly", "Eat To Live", "Stay Around", "The Perfect Beat" feat KRS One, and more, plus the bonus tracks "Go With Us" feat Strong Arm Steady, "Hostile Gospel Pt 2" feat Sizzla and "The Nature" featuring same kid named Justin Timberlake (never heard of him).
