✨✧ VariousIt's Christmas On Mack Avenue ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really great jazz-based Christmas album – one that's done in the best style of vintage gems like Jingle Bell Jazz or God Rest Ye Merry Jazzmen – with an equally great blend of instrumental and vocal artists throughout! The package highlights some of the best artists on the Mack Avenue label, performing a mix of Christmas standards in very different styles – some relatively straight, some full of fire and improvisation – and with a shift in instrumental lineups that makes for a very fresh record throughout! Titles include "Christmas Time Is Here" by Warren Wolf, "Silent Night" by Christian McBride, "Little Drummer Boy" by Tia Fuller, "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" by Sean Jones, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" by Cecile McLorin Salvant, "Sleigh Ride" by Aaron Diehl, "Santa Claus Go Straight To The Ghetto" by Christian McBride, "Skating" by Hot Club Of Detroit, and "Carol Of The Bells" by Warren Wolf. A classic set you'll be playing at seasonal gatherings for years to come! CD

Joey DefrancescoIn The Key Of The Universe ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
A spiritual surprise – and a record that we really didn't expect! Joey DeFrancesco's really got a great edge this time around, thanks in part to some incredibly strong saxophone work on the album from Troy Roberts and the legendary Pharoah Sanders! We'll be honest in saying that we first saw Pharoah's name on the cover, and were marveling at his sounds when the soprano sax came in on the first track – but then we picked up the record, and realized that Roberts handles most of the saxophone on the first half of the record – and we were further blown away by his combination with Joey's work on the organ! DeFrancesco really seems to be on fire here – maybe driven by Troy's strong edge, which is a sublime pairing – and the duo get some equally wonderful drums from Billy Hart, who keeps things moving all the way through – as the album soars to the skies, in a way we're not use to hearing from Joey. Sanders comes in as the album hits the halfway mark, and lends his tremendous tenor to three very spiritual tunes – and Sammy Figueroa also plays a bit of percussion on some tracks as well. Titles include "Soul Perspective", "Awake & Blissed", "In The Key Of The Universe", "Inner Being", "Vibrations In Blue", "And So It Is", and a remake of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". CD

Erroll GarnerClose Up In Swing (with bonus track) ... CD
Octave/Mack Avenue, 1961. New Copy ... $9.99 10.99
Erroll Garner at the start of the 60s – but still sounding wonderfully unique, and coming across with a timeless vibe that makes the record every bit as great as his classics from the 50s! The format is simple – just Garner on piano, with Eddie Calhoun on bass and Kelly Martin on drums – but the sound is sublime, and in that special Garner-like approach that nobody else could match – very rhythmic, with a gritty pulse at the core – yet topped with these explosive lines on the keys that all make complete sense – not showoffy pyrotechnics, but sublime lyrical lines that never fail to blow us away. Titles include "All Of Me", "No More Shadows", "You Do Something To Me", "The Best Things In Life Are Free", and "El Papa Grande" – a nice number with a bit of a Latin pulse! CD features the bonus track "Octave 103". CD

Erroll GarnerNight At The Movies ... CD
MGM/Mack Avenue, 1964. New Copy ... $9.99 10.99
Erroll Garner takes on songs from the movies – but at a level that's way different than other 60s examples of cinematic jazz albums – and which strongly preserves the classic sound of the pianist at his best! Part of the difference is that the songs are all tunes from older movies – films of the 30s and 40s, not the 60s – but the set also doesn't try to "soundtrack" the jazz performance, as the group just features Garner's trio with Eddie Calhoun on bass and Kelly Martin on drums – one of the last recordings of this group. Erroll himself is a marvel on the piano – serving up rhythmic, soul-drenched readings of tunes that include "I'll Get By", "As Time Goes By", "You Made Me Love You", "It's Only A Paper Moon", "Just A Gigolo", and "Stella By Starlight". ✨✧ Erroll Garner/Leith StevensNew Kind of Love – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Mercury/Mack Avenue, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 10.99
A really unusual album from piano giant Erroll Garner – a jazz album at the core, but one that was also used as the soundtrack for an obscure Paul Newman film of the 60s! We always love Erroll Garner in a fuller setting – something that's not always easy to find on record – and this album features his piano in the lead, over the top of some great backings from Leith Stevens – known best for his jazz soundtracks of the 50s! Stevens' provides a light bank of strings and woodwinds as support for Garner – and some of the best tunes here have a slight bossa undercurrent – quite sparkling, and very nice overall. Titles include "The Tease", "Mimi", "Paris Mist", "Fashion Interlude", "Louise", and "Theme From A New Kind Of Love". CD

Kenny GarrettDo Your Dance ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2016. Used ... $9.99
The title and cover really don't do this album justice – as the whole thing's got all the best depth and fire of Kenny Garrett's recent work, and none of the slightly cheesy 80s vibe the package makes us expect! True, there is a rapper on two tracks – son of producer Donald Brown – but his contributions are minimal, and the core energy of the record comes from a warm quartet that features Garrett's well-blown alto in the company of pianist Vernell Brown on piano, Corcoran Holt on bass, and McClenty Hunter on drums. A few cuts add in added percussion, but in a nicely subtle way – and the whole thing almost takes us back to some of Kenny's earliest records, but with a bit more maturing in the way he approaches his solos. Titles include "Philly", "Calypso Chant", "Waltz (3 Sisters)", "Persian Steps", "Chasing The Wind", and "Bossa". CD

Julian LageLove Hurts ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 17.99
Julian Lage is often one of the more compelling contemporary jazz guitarists on record – and this time around, he definitely lives up to that legacy – by offering up unusual trio takes on the music of Ornette Coleman, David Lynch, and Keith Jarrett – while also adding in a few of his own great tunes too! Lage often has a bit of fuzz around the edges – not full distortion, but also not the clean, crisp sound that's more often heard with jazz guitar – and that fullness of tone really makes things interesting, and often pushes out a sound that feels like a lot more than a trio – especially when the bass of Jorge Roeder and drums of Dave King get a bit more dynamic. Titles include "In Heaven", "Tomorrow Is The Question", "Trudgin", "Love Hurts", "In Circles", "Encore A", "The Windup", and "Crying". CD

Christian McBrideChristian McBride's New Jawn ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2018. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
Bassist Christian McBride works here with a mighty striking group – a quartet that features Josh Evans on trumpet, Marcus Strickland on tenor and bass clarinet, and Nasheet Waits on drums – all players who give this record an edge that we're not used to hearing from Christian! The music was recorded live in St Louis, which might be part of the sound – but there's clearly a new mode of expression going on here from McBride, especially when he works his bass with lots of offbeat tones and bold moments that really seem to go past the usual! Waits really keeps the energy up too, and Strickland and Evans soar in all the right moments – on titles that include "The Middle Man", "Ballad Of Ernie Washington", "Ke-Kelli Sketch", "Walkin Funny", "Seek The Source", and "Kush". Cecile McLorin SalvantWindow ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2018. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Beautifully intimate sounds from the great Cecile McLorin Salvant – a set that has the singer working with only piano or organ for accompaniment, but at a level that has her voice still flowing with marvelous ease! We've loved Cecile right from the start – but here, she maybe blows us away even more – doing a heck of a lot with just a little, managing to hit Betty Carter-like levels of expression and inflection with her vocals – while Sullivan Fortner plays piano on some tracks, organ on the others! The arrangements are wonderful – as inventive as Cecile's vocals – so that even if you think you know the tune, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Titles include "One Step Ahead", "Visions", "Somewhere", "Trouble Is A Man", "Were Thin That Special FAce", "Tell My Why", "The Peacocks", "J'Ai L'Cafard", and the original tune "A Clef". CD

Herlin RileyPerpetual Optimism ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
Great work from Herlin Riley – a drummer with plenty of New Orleans in his roots, but also a jazzman who never tries to hit you over the head with that legacy either! There's definitely a complexity in the rhythms that reflects Herlin's background – but the modes of expression are more contemporary, and more universal – as the songs feature some great criss-crossing between the trumpet of Bruce Harris and alto of Godwin Louis – the latter of whom might well be reason enough to check out the album! The horn lines are bold and soulful – and Riley gets great support from pianist Emmet Cohen and bassist Russell Hall – on titles that include "Perpetual Optimism", "Rush Hour", "Be There When I Get There", "Twelve's It", "Wings & Roots", and "Borders Without Lines". Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedro MartinezDuologue ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
A record that's recorded by a duo, but one that's got a much fuller sound than you might expect – thanks to the magic of overdub, and to some great production help from Quincy Jones! Alfredo Rodriguez plays piano, Fender Rhodes, and keyboards – Pedro Martinez plays percussion – and both artists sing a bit too – and the whole thing sounds a lot richer than just a keyboard and percussion album might, as the songs bristle with the energy of a small combo – mixing together elements of Latin jazz and other global elements, in a mode that's warmly soulful and sometimes funky. Titles include a nice remake of "Thriller", plus "Estamos Llegando", "Yo Volvere", "Mariposa", "Cosas Del Amor", "Duologue", "Africa", and "El Punto Cubano". CD

The Soul Rebels fold together two strands of contemporary New Orleans sounds – the updated brass band form for the funk-heavy generation, and the city's ever-growing love of hop hip too! The group are one of the boldest, bounciest of the contemporary NOLA scene – but they also open the door for plenty of guests along the course of the album – a large lineup that includes Kermit Ruffins, Trombone Shorty, Branford Marsalis, Brandee Younger, and Robert Glasper – just a few names in a much longer list. Titles include "Blow The Horns", "Greatness", "Down For My City", "It's Up To You", "Sabor Latino", "Blush", "Real Life", and "Slide Back". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Erroll GarnerCampus Concert ... CD
MGM/Mack Avenue, 1962. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An unusual 60s album that tries to link piano legend Erroll Garner to the crowds on the college campuses of the time – but with a vibe that's very different than most of the modern jazz sets that were usually issued in a similar format! This set was recorded mostly at Purdue University, and has Garner playing in a mode that's completely classic, and completely on fire – romping through tunes with this amazing deftness, alongside help from bassist Eddie Calhoun and drummer Kelly Martin. As with most Garner albums of this time, the pianist could almost be solo – as Erroll's strength and vitality on the keys is amazing – and the piano sound really seems to lead the bass and drums – not the other way around. Titles include "Mambo Erroll", "Stardust", "These Foolish Things", "My Funny Valentine", "La Petite Mambo", and "In The Still Of The Night". CD

✨✧ Christian McBride Big BandBringin' It ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
Excellent large group material from Christian McBride – an artist who may well be one of the most hard-working men in jazz these days! McBride's big band is always a treat – as the group soars with a soulful energy that matches Christian's smaller group material, but really expands on the energy of his music – yet still always finds a way to make the leader's instrument stand strongly out front – a feat that only a rare few bassists, like Ray Brown, managed to work with a group like this! And yet the bass never seems to overly state itself either – just act with a rich sort of leadership role that sets fire to the horns – in a lineup that includes solo work from Michael Dease on trombone, Steve Wilson on alto, Todd Bashore on flute and alto, Ron Blake on tenor, Rodney Jones on guitar, and Xavier Davis on piano. The album explodes with color and feeling at every twist and turn – and titles include "Thermo", "Youthful Bliss", "Sahara", "Upside Down", "Used Ta Could", "Optimism", and "Gettin To It". CD

✨✧ Christian SandsReach ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
Christian Sands is a mighty warm piano player – a musician who's clearly got a great reach and range on the keyboard, but always comes across with a very personal, spontaneous sort of vibe! Sands could clearly overstate his case if he wanted – but he's also one of those pianists who know just how to hang back in the right way – letting the space around the notes do just as much work as the notes themselves – in a beautifully-linked core trio that includes Yasushi Nakamura on bass and Marcus Baylor on drums. Other elements come into the music at times – tenor and bass clarinet from Marcus Strickland, guitar from Gilad Hekselman, and percussion from Cristian Rivera – but it's the core cohesion of the trio that really makes the record sparkle – a fantastic setting for Sands' well-timed, well-chosen notes. Titles include "Song Of The Rainbow People", "Armando's Song", "Gangstalude", "Use Me", "Reaching For The Sun", "Freefall", and "Oyeme". CD
