Erroll GarnerClose Up In Swing (with bonus track) ... CD
Octave/Mack Avenue, 1961. New Copy ... $9.99 10.99
Erroll Garner at the start of the 60s – but still sounding wonderfully unique, and coming across with a timeless vibe that makes the record every bit as great as his classics from the 50s! The format is simple – just Garner on piano, with Eddie Calhoun on bass and Kelly Martin on drums – but the sound is sublime, and in that special Garner-like approach that nobody else could match – very rhythmic, with a gritty pulse at the core – yet topped with these explosive lines on the keys that all make complete sense – not showoffy pyrotechnics, but sublime lyrical lines that never fail to blow us away. Titles include "All Of Me", "No More Shadows", "You Do Something To Me", "The Best Things In Life Are Free", and "El Papa Grande" – a nice number with a bit of a Latin pulse! CD features the bonus track "Octave 103". CD

Erroll GarnerDreamstreet ... CD
Octave/Mack Avenue, 1961. New Copy ... $9.99 10.99
Garner grooves nicely here – finding an almost renewed energy for the 60s, but still hitting all those highly-rhythmic modes we love so much in his early work! The recording quality is great – lots of bold echo from the piano, and even a bit of Erroll's grunting vocalizations somewhere in the mix – kind of an extra added emphasis that sounds great next to the bass of Eddie Calhoun and drums of Kelly Martin. Titles include "Just One Of Those Things", "Blue Lou", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Dreamstreet", and the groovy "Mambo Gotham" – an especially jaunty little number! CD

Octave/Mack Avenue, Early 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 10.99
A set with an ambitious title, but a nicely earthy feel – a live recording that features Erroll Garner's trio with Eddie Calhoun on bass and Kelly Martin on drums – stretching out strongly in front of a live audience – recorded live at the Seattle World's Fair, but with a vibe that's maybe more in keeping from some great small club performance by the trio! Titles include "Mack The Knife", "Misty", "Dancing Tambourine", "Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe", and "Sweet & Lovely". CD

Erroll GarnerThat's My Kick ... CD
MGM/Mack Avenue, 1967. New Copy ... $9.99 10.99
A nicely offbeat session from Erroll Garner – with some slightly unusual aspects, yet all the great choppy grooves we've always loved in his music! That's My Kick features a cool lineup that's somewhere in territory you might find on Verve or Prestige Records at the time – some nice added percussion at the bottom, thanks to congas from Jose Mangual and Johnny Pacheco – and a cool guitar-accented sound, played by the always-great Wally Richardson! Garner's piano is still very strongly in the lead of the tunes – strutting away with plenty of soul – and titles include "Gaslight", "Nervous Waltz", "More", "Like It Is", "That's My Kick", and "Shadow Of Your Smile". Kenny GarrettDo Your Dance (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mack Avenue, 2016. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
The title and cover really don't do this album justice – as the whole thing's got all the best depth and fire of Kenny Garrett's recent work, and none of the slightly cheesy 80s vibe the package makes us expect! True, there is a rapper on two tracks – son of producer Donald Brown – but his contributions are minimal, and the core energy of the record comes from a warm quartet that features Garrett's well-blown alto in the company of pianist Vernell Brown on piano, Corcoran Holt on bass, and McClenty Hunter on drums. A few cuts add in added percussion, but in a nicely subtle way – and the whole thing almost takes us back to some of Kenny's earliest records, but with a bit more maturing in the way he approaches his solos. Titles include "Philly", "Calypso Chant", "Waltz (3 Sisters)", "Persian Steps", "Chasing The Wind", and "Bossa". LP, Vinyl record album

Kenny Garrett with Pharoah SandersSketches Of MD – Live At The Iridium ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2008. Used ... $4.99
One of the most soulful sets we've heard from Kenny Garrett in years – thanks partly to the presence of Pharoah Sanders in his group! The tracks are all long and open, and really let both Garrett and Sanders get in plenty of solo space – often in ways that are a nice change from previous recordings. The lineup's a quintet – with Pharoah on tenor, and Kenny on both alto sax and bass clarinet, plus a bit of organ and synth as well – which makes for some sweet electric funky touches. Other players include Benito Gonzalez on piano and Fender Rhodes, Nat Reeves on bass, and Jamire Williams on drums – and titles include "The Ring", "Intro To Africa", "Wayne's Thang", and "Happy People". Christian McBrideChristian McBride's New Jawn ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2018. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
Bassist Christian McBride works here with a mighty striking group – a quartet that features Josh Evans on trumpet, Marcus Strickland on tenor and bass clarinet, and Nasheet Waits on drums – all players who give this record an edge that we're not used to hearing from Christian! The music was recorded live in St Louis, which might be part of the sound – but there's clearly a new mode of expression going on here from McBride, especially when he works his bass with lots of offbeat tones and bold moments that really seem to go past the usual! Waits really keeps the energy up too, and Strickland and Evans soar in all the right moments – on titles that include "The Middle Man", "Ballad Of Ernie Washington", "Ke-Kelli Sketch", "Walkin Funny", "Seek The Source", and "Kush". Christian McBrideMovement Revisited ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2020. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
A really fantastic large project by Christian McBride – maybe one of his most ambitious records ever, and one that really lives up to its intention! The movement here is the Civil Rights movement – recalled through the words of Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Rosa Parks, and Dr Martin Luther King Jr – then set to jazz instrumentation by a wonderful lineup that includes Warren Wolf on vibes, Steve Wilson on alto and flute, Ron Blake on tenor and soprano sax, Michael Dease and Steve Davis on trombones, Lew Soloff on trumpet, and Geoffrey Keezer on piano. Four different figures each take on the voices, with an approach that's as great as the music – actors Wendell Pierce, Vondie Curtis Hall, and Dion Graham – plus poet Sonia Sanchez – often shifting the words of the key figures throughout a single musical work, with results that are surprisingly powerful. Titles include "Brother Malcolm", "Sister Rosa", "Rumble In The Jungle", "Ali Speaks", "Soldiers", and "A View From The Mountaintop". A fantastic record – and one that reminds us of the great power in this nation, at a time when its light is sometimes eclipsed. CD

Cecile McLorin SalvantWindow ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2018. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Beautifully intimate sounds from the great Cecile McLorin Salvant – a set that has the singer working with only piano or organ for accompaniment, but at a level that has her voice still flowing with marvelous ease! We've loved Cecile right from the start – but here, she maybe blows us away even more – doing a heck of a lot with just a little, managing to hit Betty Carter-like levels of expression and inflection with her vocals – while Sullivan Fortner plays piano on some tracks, organ on the others! The arrangements are wonderful – as inventive as Cecile's vocals – so that even if you think you know the tune, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Titles include "One Step Ahead", "Visions", "Somewhere", "Trouble Is A Man", "Were Thin That Special FAce", "Tell My Why", "The Peacocks", "J'Ai L'Cafard", and the original tune "A Clef". CD

Herlin RileyPerpetual Optimism ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
Great work from Herlin Riley – a drummer with plenty of New Orleans in his roots, but also a jazzman who never tries to hit you over the head with that legacy either! There's definitely a complexity in the rhythms that reflects Herlin's background – but the modes of expression are more contemporary, and more universal – as the songs feature some great criss-crossing between the trumpet of Bruce Harris and alto of Godwin Louis – the latter of whom might well be reason enough to check out the album! The horn lines are bold and soulful – and Riley gets great support from pianist Emmet Cohen and bassist Russell Hall – on titles that include "Perpetual Optimism", "Rush Hour", "Be There When I Get There", "Twelve's It", "Wings & Roots", and "Borders Without Lines". Mack Avenue, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
A record that's recorded by a duo, but one that's got a much fuller sound than you might expect – thanks to the magic of overdub, and to some great production help from Quincy Jones! Alfredo Rodriguez plays piano, Fender Rhodes, and keyboards – Pedro Martinez plays percussion – and both artists sing a bit too – and the whole thing sounds a lot richer than just a keyboard and percussion album might, as the songs bristle with the energy of a small combo – mixing together elements of Latin jazz and other global elements, in a mode that's warmly soulful and sometimes funky. Titles include a nice remake of "Thriller", plus "Estamos Llegando", "Yo Volvere", "Mariposa", "Cosas Del Amor", "Duologue", "Africa", and "El Punto Cubano". CD

Chucho ValdesJazz Bata 2 ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2019. Used ... $8.99
A long overdue follow-up to the original Jazz Bata album from Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes – and like that famous set, a really open-ended album that mixes his own piano with spare but effective use of bass and percussion! Valdes is very freewheeling – almost an avant modernist at times, but always returning to an inherent sense of rhythm – amidst bass from Yelsy Heredia, batas from Dreiser Durruthy Bombale, and percussion from Yaroldy Abreu Robles – a younger rhythm trio who really keep things vibrant, but never eclipse Chucho's work in the lead. The set also features guest violin from Regina Carter on two tracks – and titles include "Obatala", "Son XXI", "Luces", "Ochun", "Chucho's Mood", "100 Anos De Bebo", and "El Guije". CD

A nice one from underappreciated west coast jazz veteren Gerald Wilson – material crafted in tribute to the city of Detroit for the Detroit International Jazz Festival! These recordings were actually made in separate New York and Los Angeles sessions, with Wilson in the conductor and arranger role – bright, vibrant material, with some grand swinging moments and reigned in jazzy blues modes, with some endearingly surprising twists and turns. Titles include "Blues On Belle Isle" (a violin solo a couple minutes into this one is one of those nicely endearing surprises), "Cass Tech", "Detroit", "Miss Gretchen", "Before Motown", "The Detroit River", "Everywhere" and "Aram". Warren WolfReincarnation ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Vibist Warren Wolf has always been way more than just a straight soloist in jazz – and here, he takes that role further by bringing in work from two different singers – vocalists Marcellus Shepard and Imani Grace Cooper, each of whom sing a few songs on the set! This isn't a straight vocal album, but instead a jazz set that happens to have vocals – and there are plenty of instrumentals that allow the fantastic sounds of Warren's vibes to flow out in this magical way – usually with a gentle groove that's augmented by excellent work from Brett Williams on Fender Rhodes – a player whose sense of understatement really matches the energy of the leader. Titles include "Vahybing", "For Ma", "In The Heat Of The Night", "The Struggle", "Livin The Good Life", "Sebastian & Zoe", and "Come & Dance With Me" – plus a great remake of "For The Love Of You". ✨✧ Erroll GarnerCampus Concert ... CD
MGM/Mack Avenue, 1962. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An unusual 60s album that tries to link piano legend Erroll Garner to the crowds on the college campuses of the time – but with a vibe that's very different than most of the modern jazz sets that were usually issued in a similar format! This set was recorded mostly at Purdue University, and has Garner playing in a mode that's completely classic, and completely on fire – romping through tunes with this amazing deftness, alongside help from bassist Eddie Calhoun and drummer Kelly Martin. As with most Garner albums of this time, the pianist could almost be solo – as Erroll's strength and vitality on the keys is amazing – and the piano sound really seems to lead the bass and drums – not the other way around. Titles include "Mambo Erroll", "Stardust", "These Foolish Things", "My Funny Valentine", "La Petite Mambo", and "In The Still Of The Night". CD

MGM/Mack Avenue, 1968. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really groovy 60s album from pianist Erroll Garner – one that mixes his already-great style on the keys with some larger backings from the great Don Sebesky! The approach is wonderful, and seems to give Garner even more punch than usual – and he's working with an excellent core combo that features Ike Isaacs on bass, Jimmie Smith on drums, and Jose Mangual on congas. The large group aren't on all the tracks, but that's fine with us – because Isaacs' bass and Mangual's congas are tremendous, and really fill in lots of space between Erroll's never-ending flurry of notes on the piano! Titles include "True Blues", "Up In Errol's Room", "Groovin High", "Girl From Ipanema", "Watermelon Man", and "The Coffee Song". CD

✨✧ Joey DefrancescoIn The Key Of The Universe ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A spiritual surprise – and a record that we really didn't expect! Joey DeFrancesco's really got a great edge this time around, thanks in part to some incredibly strong saxophone work on the album from Troy Roberts and the legendary Pharoah Sanders! We'll be honest in saying that we first saw Pharoah's name on the cover, and were marveling at his sounds when the soprano sax came in on the first track – but then we picked up the record, and realized that Roberts handles most of the saxophone on the first half of the record – and we were further blown away by his combination with Joey's work on the organ! DeFrancesco really seems to be on fire here – maybe driven by Troy's strong edge, which is a sublime pairing – and the duo get some equally wonderful drums from Billy Hart, who keeps things moving all the way through – as the album soars to the skies, in a way we're not use to hearing from Joey. Sanders comes in as the album hits the halfway mark, and lends his tremendous tenor to three very spiritual tunes – and Sammy Figueroa also plays a bit of percussion on some tracks as well. Titles include "Soul Perspective", "Awake & Blissed", "In The Key Of The Universe", "Inner Being", "Vibrations In Blue", "And So It Is", and a remake of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". CD

✨✧ Erroll GarnerNight At The Movies ... CD
MGM/Mack Avenue, 1964. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Erroll Garner takes on songs from the movies – but at a level that's way different than other 60s examples of cinematic jazz albums – and which strongly preserves the classic sound of the pianist at his best! Part of the difference is that the songs are all tunes from older movies – films of the 30s and 40s, not the 60s – but the set also doesn't try to "soundtrack" the jazz performance, as the group just features Garner's trio with Eddie Calhoun on bass and Kelly Martin on drums – one of the last recordings of this group. Erroll himself is a marvel on the piano – serving up rhythmic, soul-drenched readings of tunes that include "I'll Get By", "As Time Goes By", "You Made Me Love You", "It's Only A Paper Moon", "Just A Gigolo", and "Stella By Starlight". Mercury/Mack Avenue, Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual album from piano giant Erroll Garner – a jazz album at the core, but one that was also used as the soundtrack for an obscure Paul Newman film of the 60s! We always love Erroll Garner in a fuller setting – something that's not always easy to find on record – and this album features his piano in the lead, over the top of some great backings from Leith Stevens – known best for his jazz soundtracks of the 50s! Stevens' provides a light bank of strings and woodwinds as support for Garner – and some of the best tunes here have a slight bossa undercurrent – quite sparkling, and very nice overall. Titles include "The Tease", "Mimi", "Paris Mist", "Fashion Interlude", "Louise", and "Theme From A New Kind Of Love". CD

✨✧ Julian LageLove Hurts ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Julian Lage is often one of the more compelling contemporary jazz guitarists on record – and this time around, he definitely lives up to that legacy – by offering up unusual trio takes on the music of Ornette Coleman, David Lynch, and Keith Jarrett – while also adding in a few of his own great tunes too! Lage often has a bit of fuzz around the edges – not full distortion, but also not the clean, crisp sound that's more often heard with jazz guitar – and that fullness of tone really makes things interesting, and often pushes out a sound that feels like a lot more than a trio – especially when the bass of Jorge Roeder and drums of Dave King get a bit more dynamic. Titles include "In Heaven", "Tomorrow Is The Question", "Trudgin", "Love Hurts", "In Circles", "Encore A", "The Windup", and "Crying". CD
