Spare sounds, but beautifully woven together – all in service of these lovely long tracks that really highlight the soulful side of reedman MabumiYamaguchi! Each number here takes up half the side of a record – there's only four tracks in all – and Yamaguchi plays these slow-building, spiritually-searching solos on tenor and soprano sax – working with some great Fender Rhodes in the background on most numbers, plus bass and drums that build into the rhythms slowly – then get very full by the end of the record. The whole thing's wonderful – as powerful as it is poetic – and titles include "Dawn", "Dewdrop", "Distant Thunder", and "Leeward". LP, Vinyl record album

Motohiko Hino —
Flying Clouds ... LP Days Of Delight (Japan), 1976. New Copy ...
$46.9954.99
A never-issued live performance from the legendary Japanese drummer Motohiko Hino – recorded live in concert, originally by the Three Blind Mice label – yet a date that's a lot more freewheeling than most of the more familiar studio material from TBM! All the tracks are long, soaring, and searching – very spiritual in nature, and kicked off with long solo work from Hino, as he builds up energy and then welcomes in the rest of the group – a killer lineup that features two tenors, one in each channel – MabumiYamaguchi and Yasuaki Shimizu – plus nicely raw guitar work from Kazumi Watanabe, very different than his tighter albums of later years – as well as bass from Nobuyoshi Ino and percussion from Yuji Imamura. Titles include "Olive's Step", "Flying Clouds", and "Running Water". LP, Vinyl record album
A record with a really beautiful title – and a sound that definitely lives up to the "Sailing Ice" on the cover! The music is very much in the best post-Coltrane mode – played by a group led by the great Japanese drummer Motohiko Hino, and featuring MabumiYamaguchi on tenor and Yasuaki Shimizu on soprano and tenor – two reed players who really express themselves with a great sense of spirituality, and lots of searching energy throughout. The tracks are mostly originals (save for a version of "Soultrane") – served up in freewheeling modal grooves, and peppered with sharp, soulful solos that search out bold new territory, but which never get too free and sloppy. The set was recorded live, but the recording quality is excellent – and titles include "Sailing Ice", "New Moon", and "Soultrane". CD features bonus tracks "Rio Rome" and "Milky Shade". CD

Tsuyoshi Yamamoto/George Otsuka —
Now's The Time ... CD Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1974. New Copy ...
$14.9922.99
A pair of live performances – both of them great, and both done in the very open, creative style of the Three Blind Mice label at the time! Side one features core work by the trio of pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto, but with key guest work from Isao Suzuki on cello and Sunao Wada on guitar – both players who really open up the groove a lot! Suzuki solos in this great way on a long version of "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", and also makes an appearance on "Midnight Sugar" – which also has a long, soulful solo from Wada on guitar. Side two features a long take on "Now's The Time" – done in a freewheeling jam session mode – with Yoshio Otomo and Kenji Mori on alto sax, Takao Uematsu and MabumiYamaguchi on tenors, and Toshiyuki Daitoku on Fender Rhodes – all in a group led by drummer George Otsuka. George Otsuka —
Go On ... CD Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1972. New Copy ...
Out Of Stock
Excellent work from Japanese drummer George Otsuka – a set that has him stepping away from his previous piano trio modes, and really making some greater magic with a larger group! The combo here is a quintet – filled with bright young players that include Shunzo Ono on trumpet and flugelhorn, MabumiYamaguchi on tenor and soprano sax, Toshiyuki Daitoku on Fender Rhodes and piano, and Takashi Mizuhasi on bass – all working at this soulful, spiritual level under Otsuka's leadership – never driven too strongly by the drums, but given a sense of focus and purpose that comes through in all their individual moments on the record. The album's got a special vibe that's not really fusion, but not entirely spiritual jazz either – and title sinclude "Go On", "Castaly", "Space Drive", "Isotope", and "Here's That Rainy Day". CD

Japanese drummer George Ohtsuka returns here to his Maracaibo group – a combo with a mix of fusion and Latin influences, but stretching out on long tracks that aren't nearly as smooth as other contemporary work of this nature! The group features MabumiYamaguchi on tenor and soprano sax, Tsunehide Matsuki on guitar, and Toshiyuki Sekine on Fender Rhodes – plus guest work from Miroslav Vitous on bass and Nana Vasconcelos on percussion and voice! Tracks are nice and long – more open than other Japanese projects of this nature – and titles include "Spring 80", "American Tango", "Maracaibo Corpone", and "Mucarabu". CD
