Mid 60s magic from Johnny Williams – a cool little score to an obscure heist film that starred Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole! The style here is very much like some of Johnny's other best of the time – often playful at points, but warmer at others – a great blend of fuller strings and more whimsical instrumentation that keeps up all the delightful play of the action on the screen. Really cool music for a bunch of short, animated cartoons – all of them from a single studio in Poland, and done with these sublime sounds that really move past the familiar! These aren't always the whimsical melodies you'd hear in a Warner Brothers cartoon – and there's elements of modern composition mixed with really creative instrumentation – all served up on a set of over 40 short tracks that move between two and a half minutes to almost just thirty seconds – a wonderful portrait in sound as the music moves between the decades! Sure, you've heard it a million times – but it's still a fantastic soundtrack! The music of Carlos Nino has just gotten more and more spiritual as the years go on – and that's really saying a lot, given how spiritual he was right at the start! But with recent records, Nino has transformed from a jazz-inspired musician to maybe more of a sonic astronaut – able to take organic moments of expression and weave them into a rich tapestry of tone, color, and life – almost as if he's reworking the plane of existence, and trying to find the door to greater enlightenment in the process! That approach definitely comes through here, as Nino opens up in the company of contributors who include Jamael Dean on piano and keyboards, Devin Daniels on alto, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on strings, Jesse Peterson on guitar, Sam Gendel on alto, and Jamire Wiliams on drums – as well all players whose work appears in different ways on a variety of tracks – all helmed by the sonic exploration of Carlos, with a bit of help from veteran travelers Iasos and Laraaji. A wonderful departure for Kevin Ayers – an album that's a lot lighter and more whimsical than his original fame with Soft Machine! The tunes are extremely playful, and often quite catchy – almost a Donovan-esque blend of folksy roots and jazz inflections – but tuned a bit more towards trippier ends, thanks to instrumentation that includes celeste, electronics, flute, oboe, kazoo, cello, organ, and a wide range of different guitars! David Bedford handled arrangements, and other players on the session include some ex-Soft Machine comrades – like Hugh Hopper and Robert Wyatt! A totally cool book – one that offers up full-size reproductions of the eleven different newspapers published by the legendary Fluxus art group in the 60s and the 70s! If you know Fluxus, you know that they're not just artists, but tricksters as well – a group dedicated to causing slight disruptions in the public sphere through their creative activity – in ways that are sometimes subtle or whimsical, but which have a larger challenge to power behind them. That's definitely the case here with their newspapers – sporadic publications that sometimes take on the look of a more conventional paper, sometimes have a more artistic approach – and which take the format to offer unique takes on culture and society, but in the inventive approaches of the artists. Between them, the issues feature work by over 60 artists – including La Monte Young, Joseph Beuys, Christo, Alice Hutchins, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, Gyorgy Ligeti, Yoko Ono, and others – all serve up here on oversized black and white pages, but in a much more durable format than the original papers. An excellent follow up to Roberto Gatto's first Remembering Shelly date – a sublime reworking of older west coast jazz modes, handled by a hip batch of contemporary Italian players! The groove here is less the whimsical Shelly Manne of the early 50s, than it is the hardbopper of the early 60s – heard most famously on his live Blackhawk and Manne Hole dates! The tracks here are nice and long – really approximating the feel of those great records – and Gatto's drums are topped with some great horn work from Marco Tamburini on trumpet and Max Ionata on tenor – both players who really know how to spin out some imaginative solos on the long tracks! Beautiful soundtrack material for the last film ever from Alejandro Jodorowsky – composed and performed by his son Adan – aka Adanowsky – in a style that's surprisingly sensitive, and wonderfully thoughtful throughout! The movie is a fantasy autobiography from the legendary filmmaker – and Adan scores the music at a level that takes us back to some of our favorite French soundtracks of the 60s and 70s – sentimental, but never soppy – carefully emotive, yet never overdone – with a haunting blend of keyboards, piano, and light strings – all used in very focused ways, on melodies that range somewhere between the furniture music of Satie, and the whimsical themes of Nino Rota. A taut score from Piero Piccioni – penned for an early 60s black and white thriller, with a sound that's often a lot more serious than some of his other work of the time! There's a few whimsical themes at the start, but these drop off quickly – leaving some very spare, atmospheric numbers with a really tense, spooky sound – one that often comes from solo piano or organ work from Piccioni, the latter of which has a really deep-down, rumbling quality. Horns appear on some of the lighter moments – which have almost Nino Rota-like melodies that are a bit playful – but the score definitely leans towards the darker side of the spectrum at most moments. The Rubber Band turn their talents towards The Beatles – after successful earlier albums based around the work of Cream and Jimi Hendrix! The sound here is a bit more playful than the funkier sets from before – almost whimsical at times, with instrumentation that does odd things with woodwinds, strings, and other instrumental bits. A wonderful album of 60s Basie – one that focuses on the writing and arranging talents of the great Neal Hefti! Hefti's one of our favorite soundtrack composers of the decade, but in the years before his film fame, he was a frequent partner of Basie – and this album marks one of their greatest collaborations together. The tunes are very much in the "loud, then soft, then loud" mode that Hefti pioneered with Basie's angular group of the 50s – but they've also got some of the warmer, more whimsical touches that Neal would explore more fully in his later soundtrack work too. A charming little set from the great Dave Frishberg – easily one of the hippest singers and songwriters in jazz during the past few decades! The set's got Dave working solo – just singing along with his own piano accompaniment – in a whimsical way that matches the same sort of energy you'd get from Blossom Dearie or Bob Dorough in a similar setting – both good comparisons, given how much each have sung some of Frishberg's tunes! And as a way of tipping his hat back, the set features a great version of Dearie's "Long Daddy Green" – plus an extended "Johnny Hodges Medley", and loads of great tunes that include "The Dear Departed Past", "Eloise", "One Horse Town", "Zanzibar", and "Blizzard Of Lies". A really nice little session from Terry Gibbs – a rare one-off album for Impulse, and a straight jazz record that stands out from some of Terry's more gimmick-oriented albums of the 60s! Gibbs plays the vibes beautifully here – hitting with this sense of touch that really shines through – a really personal element that grabs us almost more than on earlier albums. The group's got a light, easygoing swing – one that really lets Terry take the lead at most points – and players include Kenny Burrell on guitar, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. There's a few nice whimsical numbers on the set – showing Terry's (and the 60s in general) trend towards using the vibes in new ways and for new grooves – and titles include "Oge", "El Fatso", "Take It From Me", "Gee Dad It's A Deagan", and "8 LBs 10 oz". A subtle album of magical beauty from Egberto Gismonti – and a lesser known record that features him mostly in a solo piano mode. The work's still quite lively, though – filled with wonderful little touches and whimsical moments that often dip down into more somber playing – and the whole thing's really one of Gismonti's best in such a format! Arguably one of the greatest horror soundtracks ever – an intense bit of work that builds on the vocal choral style of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, using male and female voices in union with staccato orchestrations to invoke a fiercely tense mood – one that works perfectly for the spooky undercurrents of the film! The approach is amazing – and even on the mellower numbers, there's a real sense of danger lurking that makes for one heck of a spooky record – maybe even more so than some later, starker soundtracks – given the subtle approach of Jerry Goldmsith. A lost chapter in the career of cellist Fred Katz – an album recorded after his small combo work with Chico Hamilton, and sort of a larger group take on the whimsical sound of the classic Hamilton Quintet! The tracks are all older folk tunes, adapted by Katz to fit a chamber jazz mode – and featuring shifting instrumentation from track to track, in order to fit the African, American, or Jewish origins of the tunes. Although the concept may sound a bit gimmicky, the record's actually pretty darn great from a jazz perspective – and is one of the few to show the real depth of Katz as a leader! Players include Billy Bean on guitar, Gene Estes on vibes, Jack Costanzo on percussion, Pete Candoli on trumpet, and Paul Horn on flute and alto – all great talents for this sort of work, especially Horn, whose reed lines help keep things lively. Great early work from Gary McFarland – much more serious than some of his whimsical bossa sides, but also a stunning example of the depths of his talents! The group on the session isn't really an "orchestra" – just a combo with Gary on vibes, Bill Evans on piano, Jim Hall on guitar, Phil Woods and Spencer Sinatra on reeds – plus some added strings. The tracks have the fragility of some of the collaborations between Bill Evans and Jim Hall – but also a bit more swing and space at times, and a wonderfully chromatic edge from McFarland's vibes! A lively little book dedicated to the ever-evolving artform of the small enamel pin – not the button, the patch, or the brooch – but those small, whimsical accessories which have really gained traction in recent years, thanks partly to the American crafting underground! The book is less historical than it is a portrait of styles and objects in recent years – and it begins with a short section on the current pin craze, then moves into a very large middle part that's broken down into different categories, with full color images throughout – before ending with a small section on making your own pins. David Rose is in fine form here – turning out a blend of western themes and more conventional orchestrations for the hit TV show Bonanza! Photographer John Williams has a great way of capturing people in space – a quality that comes through again and again in this beautiful book of street photography from the late 60s and early 70s – partly shot in his native Sydney, but also featuring images from around the world! Williams has a style that's a bit like Garry Winogrand, although maybe slightly less whimsical – a similar eye for that right moment when a person traveling through space interacts with the environment in a special way – a moment that would have been missed by the ordinary eye, captured by a snap of the camera and preserved here in a set of stunning black and white images with a really timeless eye, and a nice degree of wit. A classic album by one of the coolest cats to ever record a Halloween record – Philly TV figure John Zacherley, whose recorded career consists almost entirely of horror parody material! Zach's got a strong ability to emulate the kind of creepy figures in older horror films of the 30s and 40s – focusing mostly on their goofier sides, which are then used to present the album's whimsical horror-themed numbers, all set to jazzy backings by Gerald Alters! A key early entry in the "jazz meets Broadway" genre – and a record that was so successful, it went onto inspire countless imitations! Shelly Manne's working here in a lightly playful trio setting – alongside Andre Previn on piano and Leroy Vinnegar on bass, in a reading of tunes originally composed for the musical My Fair Lady. Given Manne's talent for unusual rhythms and melodic percussion, the session's got a bit of a whimsical edge that takes it way past the core compositions that most listeners already knew – into a realm that allows for much great improvisation and play with the melodies. Raw, sweet, deadpan pop songs about summer mornings, the ice cream man, rollercoasters, and cars from the strangely whimsical Jonathan Richman! This is Jonathan's third album for Beserkely (and the second to come out in early '77) – and the true beginning of the second phase of his career, which cast him as an oddball manchild who rattled out weird, three chord tunes about whatever seemed to be going through his development-arrested mind at the time. It's all still very sweet, very catchy, and all about acoustic stream of consciousness cuteness. This was all still very amazing in the mid 70s – well before tongue-in-cheek hipsters like the Violent Femmes used Richmond-esque quirkiness as pure gimmickery. Wonderful sounds from the films of Jacques Tati – a set that overflows with the kind of warmly wistful tunes that really help define the images on the screen!
