✨✧ Doom (MF Doom)Born Like This ... LP
Lex, 2009. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
Doom is back, sans the MF prefix, fully loaded with funky sci fi hip hop that's fit to shake the heavens – his first record in far too long, and a strong one! We don't know where the masked man holed himself up in the couple years before this set, nor do we pay much attention to the rumors and gossip (he's locked up! he's sending out imposters!), but it doesn't matter, as he's come back sharp. We hear less Marvel Comics in the beats, and more spacey, blunt funk – particularly on the handful of tracks that have additional instrumentation by Mr Chop – with guests including Raekwon, Ghostface, Slug, Bumpy Knuckles, Posdnous & Prince Paul – plus additional production by Dilla, Madlib, and Jake One! There's some great stuff here, and whether the guy is truly certifiable or if it's all a put on, we love 'em either way. Stay close by, Doom! Titles include "Gazzilion Ear", "Ballskin", "Lightworks", "Batty Boyz", "Rap Ambush", "Stil Dope", "Microwave Mayo", "Supervillainz", "Bumpy's Message" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Madvillain (Madlib & MF Doom)Madvillainy ... CD
Stones Throw, 2004. New Copy ... $8.99 9.98
A Stones Throw sci-fi masterpiece – one that was destined for greatness from conception, but we're still pretty well blown away by the final product! MC Doom and beatmaster Madlib couldn't be better suited for a collaboration. As much as we've dug the best of Doom's material of the last couple years, he's always needed a good editor – and Madlib brings nothing but the best sci-fi sound collages, scratches, and titanically driving funky beats – the grooved out 70s side of 'Lib's personality is wisely given a powder, while in the company of a vocal presence that's as insane as Doom. When it's not so pounding, the sound drops into the kinda gloomy, murky crackle of earliest Wu Tang. This is easily the best album of its kind since Dr. Octagon tore the flood gates open. Essential!!! "The Illest Villains", "Accordian", "Bistro", "Raid" feat Medaphoar, "America's Most Blunted", "Rainbows", "Curls", "Money Folder", "Hardcore Hustle","Fancy Clown", "Supervillain", "All Caps", "Rhinestone Cowboy" and more. ✨✧ Bishop Nehru & MF DOOMNehruvianDOOM ... CD
Lex, 2014. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A solid, relatively underappreciated effort from Bishop Nehru and MF Doom – one we appreciate even more with bit of time on its side! Doom is more or less focused on the production side on this one while the former handles the majority of the rhymes – and having arrived at a time when Doom's mic and stage presence were probably a bit more famous (or infamous, depending on when & where you might've seen him live) than his playful, moody and oddly melodic production genius, and Bishop Nehru is more than up to task of shining strong as the primary lyricist – despite still being a teenager when this was made! Good stuff, and like most of Doom's productions, pretty timeless. Includes "First Day Of Class", "Om", "Mean The Most", "So Alone", "Darkness (HBU)", "Coming For You", Caskets", "Great Things" and "Disastrous". CD

Silver Age, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Czarface team of Wu-Tang veteran Inspectah Deck and Boston underground hip hop heavyweights 7L & Esoteric are joined by the one-and-only MF Doom – a bonafide supergroup – and one of the finest comic book/sci-fi rap records since Madvillainy! Each one of these characters is so brilliant at their best, this record would've been a lot of fun even of they were just winging it – but it's actually pretty A-Game – with big, boisterous beats and clever samples and pretty deft rhymes throughout! Includes "Take Your Medicine", "Meddle With Metal", "Badness Of Madness", "Close Talker" (impressively riffing on a postpunk track by Wire), "Forever People", "Captain Crunch", "Don't Spoil It", "Phantoms" with Open Mike Eagle, "Bomb Thrown", "You Masked For It", "Nautical Depth", "MF Czar", "Sleeping Dogs" and more. ATA (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $23.99
A really great take on the music of Madvillain – that famous collaboration between Madlib & MF Doom – served up here in a mostly instrumental mode that's heavy on funk and jazz! You'll definitely recognize the tunes in the set, but the presentation is very different – almost as if someone's gone back to the music, stripped it down to core samples, then worked those back up again with a new sort of energy! The group's directed by Rob Mitchell – clearly the genius behind the whole project – and solos are by James Russell on tenor and flute, Simon Bobby Beddoe on trumpet, Jim Corry on alto, and George Cooper on piano and keyboards. Titles include "Meat Grinder", "Eye", "Figaro", "Can't Reform Em", "Madmix 3", "Rainbows", "Fire In The Hole", "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Operation Lifesaver", and "Borrowed Time". LP, Vinyl record album

De La SoulGrind Date (with bonus instrumentals) ... LP
Sanctuary/BMG, 2004. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
The first post-Tommy Boy De La Soul album – and it's a winner! We've been on board with De La throughout their long career – anyone with open ears must know that even their spottiest records (and this is NOT one of those) feature at least a handful of treasure tracks. Two songs into Grinda Date you'll find the stellar "Verbal Clap", one of J Dilla's finest blueprint era inspired productions ever, with precise on beat rhymes by De La. Other highlights include "He Comes" with Ghostface, a soulful track that would sound just as great on Ghost's Supreme Clientele. At the time it came out, this was De La's best album since Stakes Is High, we might actually like this one just as much. Featuring production by Dave West, J Dilla, Madlib and 9th Wonder – plus guest appearances by Yummy, Ghostface, Carl Thomas, MF Doom, Common and others. Other tracks include "The Future", "Much More" feat Yummy, "The Grind Date", "Shopping Bags", "Days Of Our Lives" with Common, "Come On Down", "Rock Co. Kane Flow" featuring MF Doom and more. Funk On Sight, 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
There's a sticker on the cover that proclaims "third time's the charm" – and while that might be the case, we've also got to admit that we've always been pretty well charmed by Tuxedo – a great outlet for the soulful talents of Mayer Hawthorne, as he teams up with Jake One! As on previous records, the groove here is very firmly rooted in the 80s – lots of electro touches, plenty of sweet keys, and a mix of sung and electronic vocals – all processed together in a nice lean style! Well-chosen guests include MF Doom, Dam Funk, Benny Sings, and Gavin Turek – and titles include "You & Me", "The Tuxedo Way", "Gabriel's Groove", "Dreaming In The Daytime", "Vibrations", "If U Want It", "On a Good One", "Extra Texture", and "Toast 2 Us". Vast AireLook Mom. . .No Hands ... CD
Chocolate Industries, 2004. Used ... $1.99
A solid full length from Vast Aire – formally of Cannibal Ox, delivering his solo debut on the very reliable Chocolate Industries label! If you dug Vast's forceful delivery on Cannibal Ox's much hyped, Def Jux scene igniting Cold Vein LP – but were left a bit cold by El-P's sometimes oppressive synth dirge, this could be the album you've been waiting on. This set's got a less cohesive overall sound than Cold Vein, as it features production by a number of cats, but the sound is more definition hip hop on the best of the cuts, which certainly works better for our ears. Madlib, RJD2, Ayatollah and Beatminerz man the board for the tracks, which feature appearances by Sadat X, Aesop Rock and the Ox's Vordul (hinting that some of this record may have been earlier intended for Def Jux), MF Doom and others. "KRS-Lightly", "Pegasus", "Candid Cam", "Zenith" featuring Blueprint, "Da Superfriendz" featuring Doom, "Look Mom. . .No Hands", "Could You Be?" and more. CD

Black Bastards has few tracks the maintain the jazzier sound of the first album, but they're mostly coming a little bit rawer, perfectly balancing their earlier style that gritty early 90s hip hop vibe. As solid as this is as a standalone hip hop relic, it's also a fascinating transitional step from the Zevlove X of Mr Hood to the later MF Doom persona! "Plumskinnzz" and "What A Ni**a Know" reached classic status on their own, and were elevated to even greater heights when the album didn't drop in its time – and other tracks include "Get-U-Now", "Sweet Premium Wine", "Black Bastards", "Constipated Monkey" and "Gimme". ATA (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Here's a record that goes straight to the heart of the music of Madlib – not just his Madvillain collaboration with MF Doom, but all the great jazziness he's brought to his many projects over the years! The set's all instrumental – a larger jazz ensemble taking off on tunes previously recorded by Madvillain – but really transforming them with a funky flair, maybe partly a modern update on the way that older school bands used to serve up their own renderings of funk and soul tunes back in the 70s! The vibe here is more contemporary overall, though – and maybe a bit more complex – as the live drums and bass really open things up, while four saxes, three trumpets, and four trombones really create some great colors over the top. There's keyboards on most numbers, and titles include "Madmix 1", "Great Day", "All Caps", "Curls", "Fancy Clown", "Raid", and "Accordion". LP, Vinyl record album
