Czarface & MF DoomCzarface Meets Metal Face ... LP
Silver Age, 2018. New Copy ... $21.99 24.98
The Czarface team of Wu-Tang veteran Inspectah Deck and Boston underground hip hop heavyweights 7L & Esoteric are joined by the one-and-only MF Doom – a bonafide supergroup – and one of the finest comic book/sci-fi rap records since Madvillainy! Each one of these characters is so brilliant at their best, this record would've been a lot of fun even of they were just winging it – but it's actually pretty A-Game – with big, boisterous beats and clever samples and pretty deft rhymes throughout! Includes "Take Your Medicine", "Meddle With Metal", "Badness Of Madness", "Close Talker" (impressively riffing on a postpunk track by Wire), "Forever People", "Captain Crunch", "Don't Spoil It", "Phantoms" with Open Mike Eagle, "Bomb Thrown", "You Masked For It", "Nautical Depth", "MF Czar", "Sleeping Dogs" and more. ✨✧ Madvillain (Madlib & MF Doom)Madvillainy ... LP
Stones Throw, 2004. Near Mint- 2LP ... $34.99
A Stones Throw sci-fi masterpiece – one that was destined for greatness from conception, but we're still pretty well blown away by the final product! MC Doom and beatmaster Madlib couldn't be better suited for a collaboration. As much as we've dug the best of Doom's material of the last couple years, he's always needed a good editor – and Madlib brings nothing but the best sci-fi sound collages, scratches, and titanically driving funky beats – the grooved out 70s side of 'Lib's personality is wisely given a powder, while in the company of a vocal presence that's as insane as Doom. When it's not so pounding, the sound drops into the kinda gloomy, murky crackle of earliest Wu Tang. This is easily the best album of its kind since Dr. Octagon tore the flood gates open. Essential!!! "The Illest Villains", "Accordian", "Bistro", "Raid" feat Medaphoar, "America's Most Blunted", "Rainbows", "Curls", "Money Folder", "Hardcore Hustle","Fancy Clown", "Supervillain", "All Caps", "Rhinestone Cowboy" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Reissue pressing from 2006. Cover has a lightly bent corner.)

✨✧ MF DoomOperation Doomsday ... LP
Fondle 'Em, 1999. Near Mint- 2LP ... $29.99
The first full length from MF Doom –setting the standard for underground hip hop to come! On this modern classic, Doom caps off the 90s with more jazzy soul in the beats, and some semblance of straightforward, if busy rhyme mastery from Doom & his guests – taken to the outer limits! What really pushes this one into legendary status are how well he works with creaky comic adventure samples, and it's the genesis of Doom's metal face supervillain personae. Looking back, it's clearly the building blocks for deeper insanity to come, but this one has a sound structure. Probably his best album. Includes "Doomsday", "Rhymes Like Dimes" feat Cucumber Slice, "The Finest" feat Tommy Gun, "Go With The Flow", "Tick Tick", "Hey!", "The Mic", "Dead Bent", "?" feat Kurious and much more – including all of the classic skits (yeah, we said it. . .classic skits, creative sci fi sample genius that are creative as the proper tracks) – with 19 tracks in all. LP, Vinyl record album

Stones Throw, 2003. Very Good- (pic cover)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
MF Doom and Madlib, two of the most ubiquitous characters in underground hip hop – hell, perhaps THE most ubiquitous characters in underground hip hop, pair up for an outing on Stones Throw! "Money Folder" is Doom's real showpiece of the couple of tracks here. Metal Face kicks his gravelly, atomically charged word bombs over some really hot start & sto(m)p beats by 'Lib. "America's Most Blunted" is the DJ's game, with a string of strange samples and soundtrack vibe with a Cut Chemist feel. Madlib's knob twirlin' and wheel spinnin' on the two main cuts and remixes is much more in his funk beats and wacked samples guise than the mad jazz vibe he's been rocking on other recent projects. 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Abstract OrchestraMadvillain Vol 1 (with bonus download) ... LP
ATA (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $23.99 24.98
Here's a record that goes straight to the heart of the music of Madlib – not just his Madvillain collaboration with MF Doom, but all the great jazziness he's brought to his many projects over the years! The set's all instrumental – a larger jazz ensemble taking off on tunes previously recorded by Madvillain – but really transforming them with a funky flair, maybe partly a modern update on the way that older school bands used to serve up their own renderings of funk and soul tunes back in the 70s! The vibe here is more contemporary overall, though – and maybe a bit more complex – as the live drums and bass really open things up, while four saxes, three trumpets, and four trombones really create some great colors over the top. There's keyboards on most numbers, and titles include "Madmix 1", "Great Day", "All Caps", "Curls", "Fancy Clown", "Raid", and "Accordion". LP, Vinyl record album

Abstract OrchestraMadvillain Vol 2 ... CD

A really great take on the music of Madvillain – that famous collaboration between Madlib & MF Doom – served up here in a mostly instrumental mode that's heavy on funk and jazz! You'll definitely recognize the tunes in the set, but the presentation is very different – almost as if someone's gone back to the music, stripped it down to core samples, then worked those back up again with a new sort of energy! The group's directed by Rob Mitchell – clearly the genius behind the whole project – and solos are by James Russell on tenor and flute, Simon Bobby Beddoe on trumpet, Jim Corry on alto, and George Cooper on piano and keyboards. Titles include "Meat Grinder", "Eye", "Figaro", "Can't Reform Em", "Madmix 3", "Rainbows", "Fire In The Hole", "Rhinestone Cowboy", "Operation Lifesaver", and "Borrowed Time". CD

✨✧ KMDBlack Bastards ... LP
Subverse, 1994. Near Mint- 2LP ... $29.99
A legendary record from KMD – one that languished unreleased for far too long! Black Bastards has few tracks the maintain the jazzier sound of the first album, but they're mostly coming a little bit rawer, perfectly balancing their earlier style that gritty early 90s hip hop vibe. As solid as this is as a standalone hip hop relic, it's also a fascinating transitional step from the Zevlove X of Mr Hood to the later MF Doom persona! "Plumskinnzz" and "What A Ni**a Know" reached classic status on their own, and were elevated to even greater heights when the album didn't drop in its time – and other tracks include "Get-U-Now", "Sweet Premium Wine", "Black Bastards", "Constipated Monkey" and "Gimme". KMDMr Hood (remastered edition) ... CD
Elektra/Traffic, 1991. Used ... $8.99
Pre-MF Doom/Metal Fingers, et al, classic material from then-Zev Love X and DJ Sub Roc! The Mr Hood LP's original release year of '91 in retrospect seems like the last chance eccentric crews had to drop a leftfield classic before everybody had to be hardcore – and this certainly is a classic! Humor, knowledge and pure niceness on par with the first De La album, though it never broke out nearly as huge. KMD also offered a wild, whole other side of the man who'd become Metal Face, before the tragic loss of Sub Roc. Along with the subsequently strident and once lost Black Bastards LP, this is one of the highwater marks in hip hop. Essential listening! Features "Peachfuzz", "Nitty Gritty" with Brand Nubian, "Humrush", "Figure Of Speech", "Trial 'N Error", "Soulflexin", "Gasface Refill" and the hilarious "Mr Hood At Piocalles Jewelry/Crackpot". CD

Chocolate Industries, 2004. Used ... $1.99
A solid full length from Vast Aire – formally of Cannibal Ox, delivering his solo debut on the very reliable Chocolate Industries label! If you dug Vast's forceful delivery on Cannibal Ox's much hyped, Def Jux scene igniting Cold Vein LP – but were left a bit cold by El-P's sometimes oppressive synth dirge, this could be the album you've been waiting on. This set's got a less cohesive overall sound than Cold Vein, as it features production by a number of cats, but the sound is more definition hip hop on the best of the cuts, which certainly works better for our ears. Madlib, RJD2, Ayatollah and Beatminerz man the board for the tracks, which feature appearances by Sadat X, Aesop Rock and the Ox's Vordul (hinting that some of this record may have been earlier intended for Def Jux), MF Doom and others. Well-chosen guests include MF Doom, Dam Funk, Benny Sings, and Gavin Turek – and titles include "You & Me", "The Tuxedo Way", "Gabriel's Groove", "Dreaming In The Daytime", "Vibrations", "If U Want It", "On a Good One", "Extra Texture", and "Toast 2 Us".
