Artifact iTi (Bauer/Nilssen Love/Lehn/Vandermark)Artifact iTi – Live In St Johann ... CD
Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy ... $4.99 13.99
A really unusual assortment of players – coming together here in a way that makes for an equally unusual sort of sound! The meeting of Chicago saxophonist Ken Vandermark and European players is hardly anything new – and drummer Paal Nilssen Love here is a frequent musical partner – but there's some really special sounds coming from both the trombone of Johannes Bauer and the electronics of Thomas Lehn – the last of whom improvises freely, and makes this bristling sort of energy next to the acoustic instruments in the group! The sounds within move between music that has the feel of more familiar free improvisation, and tunes that almost have an electro-acoustic sort of heft – and the album features one long performance, divided up into three parts. Ballister (Nilssen-Love/Rempis/Lonberg-Holm)Znachki Stilyag ... CD
Aerophonic, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
Dave Rempis is one of the most consistently deft saxophonists we've ever heard – able to stop on a dime, take a turn, change back again, all while always coming up with new musical ideas – which he does beautifully here, in a series of long improvisations with the Ballister trio of Paal Nilssen-Love on drums and percussion, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics! And it's not just Dave's lack of a hyphenated last name that makes him so quickly creative – as his response to the efforts of his bandmates here is amazing – sometimes out front, almost directing them – other times following slightly behind, and putting things into order while the percussion, cello, and electronics are allowed much stronger sonic freeplay. Titles include "Old Worms", "Hotel Mary Poppins", and "F*ck The Money Changers". CD

Brotzmann/Kondo/Pupillo/Nilssen-LoveHairy Bones ... CD
Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99
Pretty hairy stuff from Peter Brotzmann and crew – a set that blasts right out of the gate with some really bone-rattling noise! The album's a live set, recorded recently in Amsterdam – featuring Brotzmann on alto, tenor, b flat clarinet, and tarogato – alongside Toshinori Kondo on electric trumpet, Massimo Pupillo on electric bass, and Paal Nilssen Love on drums. The electricity in the instruments can definitely be felt on the title track "Hairy Bones" – a hard-driving tune that runs for over 30 minutes, and which really recalls the energy that Brotzmann had a few decades before, when crossing over big to new audiences around the globe. "Chain Dogs" is even longer, but starts a bit slower – but then really bursts forth with more noisy elements on trumpet and bass – some really speaker-rattling stuff! CD

LoveDa Capo (Original Master Recording) ... CD
Elektra/Mobile Fidelity, 1967. Used Gatefold ... $28.99
A stunning second album from Love – a set that's still without the fuller orchestrations and baroque touches of Forever Changes – but which already shows the group moving in that direction! The rough, gritty edge of the group is very firmly intact – but they've already got a really fresh way of putting over a song – by complicating the rhythms a bit, going for unusual tonal colors, and furthering the really imaginative songwriting of Arthur Lee. Side one features some incredibly haunting shorter tunes that point the way towards Forever Changes – including the insanely wonderful "She Comes In Colors", the Latin-tinged "Que Vida", and the cuts "Stephanie Knows Who", "The Castle", and "Seven & Seven Is". Side two is a total freak-out – an 18 minute bluesy guitar jam, very over the top stuff – and quite unusual in length for a rock album in 1966! CD

LoveEverybody's Gotta Live (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
High Moon, 1974. New Copy ... $17.99
A really cool package – a set that features the famous 70s title track by Arthur Lee and Love, plus rare tracks from the sessions for their Reel To Real album – all on vinyl for the first time ever! "Everybody's Gotta Live" is completely wonderful – Lee at his finest, but in a very different way than in the 60s – charming on vocals right from the start, with acoustic guitar used to give the whole thing a different flavor of Love! Other cuts are a nice surprise, too – almost funky in parts, and showing some real new directions for Arthur – on titles that include "You Gotta Feel It (outtake)", "I Gotta Remember (outtake)", "Do It Yourself (outtake)", "Singing Cowboy (alt)", and "Everybody's Gotta Live (electric version)". LoveFour Sail ... LP
Elektra, 1969. Very Good ... $39.99
Much more of a hard rock affair than the group's third LP – kind of a return to the heavy guitars of Da Capo after the baroque beauty of Forever Changes – but a stone winner nonetheless! Arthur Lee's genius is still firmly in place, and although there's a back to basics rock feel on the record, it's still touched by the madness that haunted earlier records – and crackles with a drugged-up intensity that would still make it a hell of an album, even if it was the only one the band ever recorded! Titles include "Robert Montgomery", "I'm With You", "Your Friend & Mine – Neil's Song", "August", "Always See Your Face", "Talking In My Sleep", "Nothing", and "Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

LoveLove ... LP
Elektra, 1966. Very Good ... $43.99
Love's first album – a seminal bit of Sunset Strip rock, and every bit as powerful today as it was in the 60s! The style's a bit sharper-edged than the group's classic and more familiar Forever Changes set, but it's still pretty darn great – a completely fresh batch of guitar-heavy tunes that bristle with a sound that's a lot more sinister than some of the group's contemporaries. There's a few folksy or bluesy elements in the mix, but they're almost used in a way that parodies bigger acts of the time – turning the familiar into the freaky, all with a sense of power that's simply mindblowing. Titles include the group's excellent version of Burt Bacharach's "My Little Red Book", plus "Hey Joe", "Emotions", "A Message To Pretty", "Mushroom Clouds", "And More", and "Coloured Balls Falling". LP, Vinyl record album

Nana LoveDisco Documentary – Full Of Funk ... CD
Nestor/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 16.99
Rare funky soul from Ghanaian disco diva Nana Love – the rare, appropriately-titled Full Of Funk record from 1979 – with dynamite vocals by Nana and featuring Ghana legend Harry Mosco and other incredible players in the studio band! Nana's voice is uniquely amazing – with a sweet, girlish tone that builds to a lioness roar on occasion – which is incredibly compelling – and sung entirely in English. The band provides a wicked backdrop of funky dancefloor soul – propelled by fantastic guitarwork by Mosco, Paul Pryce and Les Forrest, killer basslines by Grek Haywood, sax and flute by Humphrey Okoh, percussion by Ayindi, drums by Tony Martin, synth and clavinet by Adrian Bennett and piano by Richard Reid. This great version from BBE includes 5 bonus tracks not on the original release – and the titles include "I'm in Love", "Whe Gonna Stay For The Party", "Talking About Music", "Disco Lover", "When The Heart Decides", "Reach Out My Hand", "Hang On Baby", "Loving Feeling (Dance Mix)" and "Loving Feeling (Instrumental)". T-Electric/PTG (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
A nicely grooving soul album from Love Committee – who are probably best known for their earlier disco songs, but we really dig this 1980 self-titled album for the mellower numbers – the best of which have a smooth midtempo groove that's as tasty as ever! A few of the numbers were co-written by Eddie Levert of The O'Jays, an indication of the style LC were going for, and they hit it nicely! Titles include "Love People Theme", "Ain't It a Shame", "You Are the One for Me","Boogie Papers", "Who Can We Trust", "I Wanna Make Love to You", and "I Made A Mistake". This Vinyl Masterpiece edition has 2 bonus tracks: longer versions of "I Made A Mistake" and "Boogie Papers". CD

Love SculptureForms & Feelings ... CD
EMI (UK), 1969. Used ... $4.99
Wonderful work from Love Sculpture – a heavy British trio from the end of the 60s – and one that features a young Dave Edmunds on guitar! There's a slight bluesy undercurrent in Dave's style, but the music also has that tightly compressed sound that would emerge more strongly during his hit solo years – yet which is presented here with some very nice rough edges. Songwriting is especially great – a fresh approach to territory that was beginning to sound a bit stale in the hands of some of the group's contemporaries – presented here with a clean, lean sound that's almost a precursor to power pop at points, yet which still has a heavier late 60s rock feel. Titles include "In The Land Of The Few", "Seagull", "People People", "Mars", "Sabre Dance", "Farandole", and "You Can't Catch Me". CD

AFJ (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $29.99
This isn't the first time that Joe McPhee and Paal Nilssen-Love have recorded together – but the set may well be their best – a beautiful batch of duets that have the pair really blowing us away with their sympathetic spontaneous creative activity! There's a spiritual core here that really lives up to the title – not just on the duo's rendition of the famous gospel theme, which has Joe on an especially strong tenor sax solo – and the whole record has a rising righteousness that makes it an instant classic, and a key part of the canon of both artists – not just another set of live improvisations. Joe plays pocket trumpet and tenor, Paal plays the drums in his usual freewheeling style – and titles include "Voices", "Mr DC", "Consideration", "Big Joe Tell Me What You Know", and "Circumstantial Evidence". Qui est Babs Robert? Turns out he's a hell of a saxophonist from the Belgian scene at the start of the 70s – an amazingly soulful player who's got just the right sort of spiritual vibe to live up to the image on the cover! Babs plays alto, tenor, and even a bit of electric tenor too – plus wood flute, percussion, and other instruments – in a group of players who often handle an equal range of instruments themselves! The music is a mix of modal groovers and freer, more spiritual sounds – a space that's somewhere between the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Pharoah Sanders on Impulse Records – carried off by an equally obscure, but equally excellent group of musicians. Titles include "Marrow Bone", "Extra Pol Action", "Architexture", "PACM", "Pro Forma 1", and "His Master's Noise". LP, Vinyl record album

Barry White & Love Unlimited OrchestraTogether Brothers – Original Soundtrack ... CD
20th Century/Elemental (France), 1974. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A stunner of a soundtrack from the maestro Barry White – his only entry into the blacksploitation film genre of the 70s, and a complete doozy throughout! For the album, Barry's stripped down the bigger space of his own records, and his Love Unlimited productions – into some shorter tracks that really focus on that blend of funk and strings that he could do so well – making for a batch of killer instrumentals that really offer up a special Barry White take on the funky film sound of the 70s! Love Unlimited also sing on two tracks – "Somebody Is Gonna Off The Man" and "People Of Tomorrow Are The Children Of Today _- but most of the record is instrumental, played by the Orchestra – and tracks include "Killer's Lullaby", "So Nice To Hear", "Killer Don't Do It", "Can't Seem To Find Him", "Alive & Well", "Theme From Together Brothers", "Do Drop In", and "Here Comes The Man". Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A classic from Cannoball and producer-partner David Axelrod – truly great stuff and maybe even better than the Zodiac set Cannonball did for Capitol! The formula is similar to that one – with David Axelrod producing, electric keyboards by Hal Galper and George Duke, spacey solos by Cannonball and Nat Adderley, and some very hip recitations by Rick Holmes on love, sex, and the zodiac! Holmes is best known as the chappie who cut "Remember To Remember" years later with Roy Ayers – but this album's got a similar "wisdom and knowledge" feel that's pretty wonderful. The record works extremely well in the tradition of excellent modern soul issued by the Expansion label – with subtle jazzy backing, mostly mellow, and touches of flute, keyboards, and guitar that remind us of some of the best soul on Philly International during the early 80s. Both Andrea and James sing vocals, and tracks include "Rhythm & Grace", "I've Got Everything", "Daddy's Hands", "Give Love Another Try", "Just For You & Me", and "Should Have Been Sweeter". 15 tracks – with a few more that weren't included on the duo's US release. Resonance, 1982. New Copy 2 CDs ... $22.99 24.99
Unreleased live work from pianist Monty Alexander – recording here with a bit of extra percussion in his trio, which always seems to give his music a nice little kick! The date was captured at Bubba's, in Fort Lauderdale – a club that not only seemed to be a rare spot in Florida that gave musicians a chance to open up like some of the better clubs on the west coast – but one that also did a superb job of documenting some of its best performances over the years! That's definitely the case here – as Monty maybe sounds better than on most of his studio dates of the period – stretching out on nice long tracks, with help from Paul Berner on bass, Duffy Jackson on drums, and Robert Thomas Jr on percussion – the last of whom really keeps things interesting from a rhythmic perspective – in ways that definitely show up on Alexander's keyboard too. Titles include "Love You Madly", "Sweet Lady", "Eleuthra", "Reggae Later", "Arthur's Theme", "SKH", "Swamp Fire", "Fungii Mama", "Montevideo", and "Consider". CD

A very groovy album by Laurindo Almeida – one of his best bossa cookers in a swinging 60s mode! The album features lots of great acoustic guitar from Laurindo, but spun over fuller arrangements by Lex De Azvedo, Clare Fischer, and Dick Grove – all of whom get that right sort of jaunty, breezy style to really showcase the evolution of the bossa on the west coast scene of the 60s! Production is great – handled by Lex – and really still lets the gentle acoustic guitar step out in front of the rest of the group – on groovy titles that include "The Look Of Love", "Windy", "I Love You", "When I Look In Your Eyes", "A Beautiful Friendship", and "Alfie". The record has a great little groove – kind of that Charles Earland stepping vibe that we love on his late 70s Muse recordings – supported by some sweet organ work from Bobby Floyd, a player we don't know at all, but who really shines here! Most of the cuts just feature a trio – with Matt Wagner on drums, and Vince on alto, tenor, soprano sax, and flute – working through mostly original material that includes "Love Oh Love", "Akila", "The One Who Needs You", "Being With You", and "Vibrating With Vince". Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
Three full albums from Atlantic Starr – with lots of bonus tracks too! All In The Name Of Love has Atlantic Star at the height of their catchy commercial fame – bouncing along with rhythms that crossover nicely to the mainstream, yet still keep a bit of their previous funky edge intact! The groove here is almost in the style that Atlantic Starr inspired in so many other younger groups in the earlier part of the 80s – although it's also a bit more polished too. Most instrumentation is electric, and tunes are mostly written by the team of David and Wayne Lewis – both of whom sing on the record. Barbara Weathers also handles female vocals, and titles include "Once Lover At A Time", "Let The Sun In", "My Mistake", "I'm In Love", "Always", "Don't Take Me For Granted", and a version of Sam Dees' "All In The Name Of Love". We're Moving Up is one of the last in a long run of 80s hits from Atlantic Starr – a group who were already moving up the soul charts before the release of the album! The set continues their move into commercial territory started a few records before, but it also shakes loose of some of the colder sounds of 80s soul – and picks up a somewhat warmer vibe on the keyboards and rhythms. Porscha Martin sings female vocals with the group, and titles include "Under Your Spell", "Love Ain't Fair", "Woman's Touch", "We're Movin Up", "My Sugar", "You Deserve The Best", and "Don't Start The Fire". Love Crazy is a set that's got a nice change in groove from Atlantic Starr – a sound that's still got a lot of their best elements intact, but which also seems to bring on some of the best elements that were being introduced by the British scene too! Rhythms at points are maybe more in the Soul II Soul or Lisa Stansfield modes – which makes for some great tunes that really reinvigorate the group and update them for a new jack generation, while still holding onto the charms of the past. A few moments get more in a mellow quiet storm sound – all with the balance that made earlier Atlantic Starr albums classics – on titles that include "Love Crazy", "Hold On", "Masterpiece", "Girl Your Love's So Fine", "I Can't Wait", "If You Knew What's Good For You", and "Come Lover". 3CD package features all albums in tiny LP-styled jackets – with bonus tracks that include "One Lover At A Time (ext)", "Always (edit)", "Let The Sun Shine IN (ext rmx)", "All In The Name Of Love (single)", "My First Love (ext)", "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth ext mix)", "My First Love (7" edit)", and "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth underground mix)". A fantastic record from jazz harmonica player Donald Bailey – maybe one of the few we've ever seen with his name in the lead, and a set that shows that he can easily rival some of the greats on his instrument at the time! The vibe of the set is a bit like some of the best jazz dates from Toots Thielemans – mellow accompaniment from a Japanese group that features Hideo Ichikawa on piano, Yoshio Ikeda on bass, and Takaki Nishikawa on drums – plus guest tenor from Hideyuki Kikuchi on two tracks! Yet throughout it all, the round, robust sound of Bailey on the harmonica is in the lead – blowing with a strong sense of tone, and an imaginative power that shows how he, like Toots, can really match the energy of a saxophonist in sense of solo and rhythm. Philip BaileyLove Will Find A Way ... CD
Verve, 2019. Used ... $5.99
Philip Bailey's looking hipper than usual on the cover – and he's sounding hipper than usual within – thanks to fantastic production help from Robert Glasper, Christian McBride, and Chick Corea – all artists who play on the record, and help give Bailey a really timeless sense of soul! The man himself needs no introduction – thanks to his long legacy in Earth Wind & Fire, and a range of great solo records too – but there's really something different, and something special taking place here – as Bailey pushes both his vocal range and sense of songform, working through music by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Oscar Brown Jr, and even the Talking Heads – while also turning in some great songs of his own, co-penned with some of the album's collaborators. The instrumentation is served up by a dream group of jazz talents – Kamasi Washington on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, Robert Glasper and Chick Corea on keyboards, Steve Wilson on saxes and flute, Lionel Loueke on guitar, and Christian McBride on bass – and although the record features guest vocals from Bilal and Casey Benjamin, it's Bailey's work that's the real main attraction. Titles include "We're A Winner", "Stairway To The Stars", "Just To Keep Your Satisfied", "Once In A Lifetime", "Billy Jack", "You're Everything", "Brooklyn Blues", "Sacred Sounds", and "Love Will Find A Way". Laurent Bardianne & Tigre D'Eau DouceLove Is Everywhere ... LP
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99 36.99
A fresh set of contemporary soul jazz from French tenorist Laurent Bardianne – a jazz musician, but one with a tie to other stylistic communities – which you can hear in the record from the very first note! The quintet has a familiar lineup that includes Hammond B3, bass, drums, and percussion – the last from Roger Raspail – but the sound is often very different than the standard grooves you'd expect from such a setting, partly because the presence of Raspail does a nice job of complicating things in the rhythm department, as does the presence of a bassist next to any basslines that might be produced by the organ! Bardianne gets plenty of space to solo out front – often in a way that really matches the changed-up rhythms – and titles include "Kinshasa", "Cabane", "Song Dong Hee", "Apaches", "Insolente", "Everlasting Child", and "Love Is Everywhere" – plus the track "Star 5", which features a guest vocal appearance from Anthony Joseph. The balance is great, and the record's the sort that makes us appreciate Beirach even more than before – a great reminder of his talents, on tracks that include "Night & Day", "Goodbye", "Autumn Leaves", "On Green Dolphin Street", "What Is This Thing Called Love", and "Nardis". Marlin/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $14.99
Disco grooves, but with a definite difference – given that Jo Bisso had previously worked on the Parisian club scene, and brings a special flourish to this American album from the late 70s! Jo sings lead vocals on the side-long "Love Somebody" – a tune that builds strongly as Bisso gets answered by a trio of lovely ladies who really brighten up the sound – and who then seem to take over even more on the flipside working with singer Claudia Ferrari. This second side is even better than the first – as things get a bit more spare and stripped-down – snaking out on the smooth stepper "Your Love", getting some funky moogy touches on the P&P-like "Let's Keep It Together", and warming up on the mellow disco number "Thank You Baby". Special bonus – CD features a fifth track – not titled or credited at all! CD

Brighter Side Of DarknessLove Jones ... CD
20th Century/P-Vine (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $19.99
A tremendous bit of harmony soul from Chicago – one of the few cases where the Windy City really gave the east coast a run for its money – and the landmark album from teen soul quartet Brighter Side Of Darkness! Although young, Brighter Side managed to bring a depth to their work that was way more than kiddie soul – a heartfelt, heartbreaking quality that was all adult, no matter how youthful the themes – and their vocals are a perfect contrast to the fuller arrangements from producers Clarence Johnson and Johnny Cameron. The set contains the group's classic "Love Jones", still one of the best fragile harmony tracks of the early 70s – plus loads of other great numbers like "I Owe You Love", "I'm A Loser", "Just A Little Bit", and a superb remake of "Summer Ride". ✨✧ Trina BroussardInside My Love ... CD
Expansion (UK), Late 90s/2008. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The long-overdue release of Inside My Love – a sublime little set recorded by Trina Broussard in the late 90s – originally planned for the So-So Def label, but never properly issued at the time! The album's years ahead of most soul of the time – a great precursor to the Neo Soul explosion that major labels would finally get behind in the 21st Century, but which still left them scratching their heads back in the 90s – and failing to get music this great out to the market. Thankfully, Expansion have helped fix a decade-old mistake – and they're letting Trina's warmly soulful sound sparkle beautifully with this well-done reissue. Broussard's got a wonderfully classy approach to her music – one that's been appreciated in subsequent releases, but which comes through even more clearly here – a great sense of poise that's almost classic in a Phyllis Hyman sort of way. Titles include "Losing My Mind", "Why Do I Feel So Sad", "All I Need Is You", "All Night Long", "Not Around", "Remember Me", "Sailing", "Say You Really Love", and "Inside My Love". Bobby Byrd acts as the MC, and joins James for a bit of vocals – and the group at this point still includes Bootsy Collins on bass, plus loads of great guitar from Catfish Collins, and Fred Wesley on trombone and Jabo Starks on drums. Dave Matthews handled some of the arrangements – and titles include "Soul Power", "Sex Machine", "Bewildered", "It's A New Day", "Ain't It Funky Now", "Brother Rapp", "Super Bad", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag/I Got You/I Got The Feelin". Brown SugarI'm In Love With A Dreadlocks – Brown Sugar & The Birth Of Lovers Rock 1977 to 1980 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
The first collection we've ever seen to do justice to the Brown Sugar trio from the UK reggae scene of the late 70s – a group who do a fantastic job of merging older sweet soul styles with a new lovers' vibe, all in a mode that's completely sublime! The group's noteworthy as the starting place of Caron Wheeler, who'd later rise to great fame in Soul II Soul – and Carol Simms, who'd later rise on her own as Kofi – but even without that later legacy, the music here is completely wonderful – and is presented with detailed notes, in a set that collects all the singles the trio recorded at the time with Dennis Bovell and John "Brownie T" Kpiaye. Brown Sugar are clearly influenced by the sweeter side of American group soul style in the late 60s – and even cover a few cuts from that era – yet they also have this bad-stepping style that really offers up the strongest current of the London style of the period – the crisper crackle and rootsier production approach that was really showing a scene coming into its own. Titles include "Black Pride", "Our Reggae Music", "Hello Stranger", "You & Your Smiling Face", "Loving Dreadlocks Dub", "Confession Hurts", "Proud", "Do You Really Love Me", "Hurtin", "Run Away Love",a nd "Dreaming Of Zion". The songs are longer than on earlier albums – and spun out with a complex groove that mixes equal parts of jazz, folk, and soul with the soaring spiritual vibe that was running through the Chicago scene at the time. The first side alone is the stuff that legends are made of – with classic tracks like "Dancing Girl", "What Color is Love", and "You Goin' Miss Your Candyman" all in a row, sewn together in a wash of love, soul, and emotion that you'd be hard pressed to find on any other album from the time. A fantastic set of exotica from the legendary percussionist Chaino – a set that was originally billed as a record to set free the passions of reluctant lovers in the postwar years – but which has a much deeper vibe than that! The percussion is great throughout – lots of congas and other percussion work, mostly used in a very spare setting – so that the drums are bringing forth both rhythmic and melodic elements, as they're topped with occasional vocal calls, whistles, and other spare elements – usually done in very stark ways amidst the echoey production setting of the album – leaving everything in strong contrast to the percussion as the set progresses, and the passions are unbridled! This album's more than enough proof of that – and it features some good mellow tracks that have Gene singing in a sophisticated quiet storm sort of style. Edsel (UK), 1980s. New Copy 7CD ... $64.99 69.99
A huge batch of work from Change – all the group's classic albums from the 80s, plus some great work from later years too – all with bonus tracks added to most of the records! First up is Glow Of Love – the classic debut from Change – and the start of an amazing run of groovers in the early 80s! The set's got a tight, jazzy feel throughout – a stripped-down approach to disco modes, with the same focus on the basslines that you'd find in work by Chic – but a style that's almost even more instrumentally focused overall, given the great range of studio players who worked on the set. Yet there's also some key vocal moments, too – work by Luther Vandross that really helps make some of the best tracks sparkle, and which went onto catapult Vandross into a rich solo career on his own. Next is Miracles – a brilliant second set from Change – working here without Luther Vandross on lead vocals, but hardly missing a beat at all! As before, the basslines are at the core of the set – a sweet stripped-down approach that brings even more focus onto the bottom of the groove for early 80s dancefloors – with loads of numbers that step along in a really groovy mode – one quite far from the cliches of disco, and inflected by loads of jazzy elements that keep things fresh over the years! Vocals are by James Robinson – previously with Lonnie Liston Smith – Diva Gray, and Jocelyn Shaw. Sharing Your Love is sweet modern soul from this great group – one of the brightest points in major label soul during the early 80s! Change, ironically, is a group that went through a number of line-up changes, even in their prime – with the tight, clubby, yet genuinely soulful production a constant. This record is made all the better for the beautifully soulful dual lead vocals of James Robinson and Deborah Cooper. The tracks have deeply layered live instrumentation – keyboards, guitar, percussion, horns and strings – blended seamlessly with early 80s production touches. This Is Your Love is an overlooked set from Change – a record that possibly wasn't as hit-worthy as some of their previous efforts – yet one that still had the group very much at the top of their game! By this point, Change had really evolved past being just a studio project, into a rock-solid soul group with a definite ear for a groove – particularly the tight, lean sort of rhythms that percolated in the post-Chic era – making a perfect fit for the slightly jazzy production of the record. Bassbits and beats drive most of the rhythms, but there's still a nice degree of warmth – and vocals are handled by Deborah Cooper, James Robinson, Rick Brennan, and Timmy Allen – who each seem to get their moment in the spotlight, furthering the well-rounded sound of the record. Next is Change Of Heart – a game-changing album from Change – a real breakthrough for the early 80s international soul combo! Change Of Heart has some great production by Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis – and on top of that, it's perhaps the best set of songs the group had recorded to to date. Jam/Lewis wrote half the tunes and produced most of the album, which is front-loaded with some of the best of them. Turn On Your Radio is not nearly as well-known as their first few hits, but still in that all-solid approach to the groove that was the Change trademark during the early 80s! The sound is a bit more stripped down than before – tight beats and keyboards, mostly in a mellow to midtempo mode – all topped with vocals from male and female members of the group! Change still have a great way with a hook here – an approach to soul that's tight and professional, yet not nearly as cloying as some of the chart-climbing acts of their generation. And as before, the keyboards are almost as great as the vocals – with slight jazzy inflections that warm up the tunes nicely! Last up is Love 4 Love – a 2018 comeback for Change – still sounding great all these many years later, but in a slightly different way! The balance between all elements here is fantastic – as the music has all the best parts of the group's earlier music, but also updates the sound a bit – in the way that a combo like Incognito or Brand New Heavies were updating older soul music back in the 90s, by grabbing all the strongest parts of the past, and fusing them into a fresh lean groove. The songs are upbeat, positive, and full of the kind of catchy hooks that Change always did so well! Box set features 78 tracks in all – with bonus tracks added to most albums! CD

✨✧ Ray CharlesHallelujah I Love Her So! (aka Atlantic 8006) ... LP
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good- ... $19.99
Early 60s issue of a host of early classics from the young Ray Charles – tracks that were some of his most important singles for Atlantic Records, from a time when Ray was really finding his groove! These are the tunes that really put Charles on the map – and many have a raw, vibrant quality that's a lot more R&B than some of his later work – hard-burning numbers that move at a mighty quick pace – mixed with a few that show the jazzier approach in years to come. Titles include "Sinner's Prayer", "Mess Around", "Greenbacks", "I Got A Woman", "A Fool For You", "Losing Hand", "Ain't That Love", "Drown In My Own Tears", "This Little Girl Of Mine", and "Don't You Know". Tina CharlesI Love To Love (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
CBS/RPM (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $7.99
A great expanded version of this classic from Tina Charles – one that brings in 8 more bonus tracks from her pre-disco years! These tunes are really wonderful – titles that show a style of female pop that still has the soul-influenced quality that was picked up by the British scene in the late 60s, but which pushes that groove with a bit more polish – serving up class and confidence in a single breath, but still having enough of a soul quality to appeal to our ears. Added to these bonus tracks is the main album – I Love To Love – a record that mixes older vocal touches with the swirling sounds of the legendary Biddu – in a groove that's got a heck of a lot to offer! Tina never was one of the most underground singers of her generation – but it's her confidence in that fact that makes this music so great – an unabashed love of the poppier sounds of the dancefloor, in a way that beautifully mixes together 70s AM sensibilities with the growing sounds of the disco movement. Biddu's a great choice for the project – and while the music isn't as exotic as some of his own albums, it's still got some great instrumental flair! Titles include "Love Me Like A Lover", "I Love To Love", "Hold Me", "Hey Boy", "Why", and "Disco Fever". Bonus tracks are from 1969 to 1973 – and include "Rich Girl", "In The Middle Of The Day", "Good To Be Alive", "Same Old Story", "Band Of Gold", and "You Can Do Magic". CD

Childish Gambino once again transcends anything you might be expecting from an actor/musician – this is not some vain star trip at all, but a worthy, boundary-busting effort – and a pretty sizable step away from idiosyncratic, yet accessible hip hop into spacey pop funk! Strong stuff, following his own path in respectable, highly rewarding fashion. COB (Clive's Original Band)Spirit Of Love ... CD
CBS/Bread & Wine, 1972. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A beautiful little record from the glory days of the acid folk scene in the UK – a set served up by Clive Palmer, who you might know from work in Incredible String Band and Wizz Jones – sounding even more enigmatic here at the helm of a trio who were produced by the legendary Ralph McTell! The style is light years from the more traditional sounds of some of Ralph's music – very moody and dark, with instrumentation that comes from guitar, recorder, and a variety of other instruments – including the unusual dulcitar, which was invented by trio member John Bidwell! Lead vocals are from Clive and Mick Bennett – alternating on different tracks, and harmonizing with a very eerie vibe, one that's further expanded by the unusual production modes too. A few tracks add in other elements, but just lightly – really keeping the solitary, spooky vibe of the record intact. Titles include "Evening Air", "Serpent's Kiss", "Wade In The Water", "Soft Touches Of Love", "Music Of The Ages", Spirit Of Love", and "Sweet Slavery". CD

Al Cohn & Jimmy RowlesHeavy Love (with bonus track) ... CD
Xanadu, 1977. Used ... $6.99
Lots of heavy love here – a wonderful sense of rapport between the great tenorist Al Cohn and piano genius Jimmy Rowles! Both musicians were still recording heavily at the time of this album, but the record seems to capture them in a really special space that still stands strongly on its own – a mode that's much more relaxes than some of the Pablo Records sessions of the time, and which has Cohn in an especially striking mode – really hitting these openly-blown, often-angular lines that are dripping with soul – more heart and feeling than we might normally expect from him, matched equally by Jimmy Rowles' wonderful phrasing on piano – very much here at the top shelf level he delivered with Stan Getz on The Peacocks album. Titles include "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", "Bar Talk", "These Foolish Things", "Them There Eyes", and "Sweet & Lovely". Features the bonus track "For All We Know". CD

An instrumental version of the set that the group cut with Jeb Loy Nichols – and one that's really overflowing with the group's wonderful deep funk vibe! The core group features Hammond, bass, and drums – but there's also some added horns on the top, handled by Jukka Eskola – who you might know from his own groovy records, and who really helps add a whole layer of classic soul to the set! Most tunes are in a lightly-tripping version of funk – mellow and laidback, in a way that's not too far from the El Michel's side of the spectrum, but captured with more of the edge of some rare indie label 45. Titles include "My Love", "Like A Rainy Day", "Cry Me Another One", "Living It Up", "Not There Yet", "Help Me Along", "The World Loves A Fool", and "We Gotta Work On It". LP, Vinyl record album
