Ballister (Dave Rempis/Fred Lonberg Holm/Paal Nilssen Love)Chrysopoeia ... CD
Not Two (Poland), 2022. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Two searing long, live improvisations that really sum up the intensity of the Ballister trio at its best – the kind of special sonic resonance that occurs between the saxes of Dave Rempis, drums of Paal Nilssen Love, and cello and electronics of Fred Lonberg-Holm! All three players are musicians who can be more speculative and tentative in moments of spontaneous creation – but here, they clearly know each other so well, and can gauge the responses of their bandmates, there's sort of a freewheeling frenzy of musical imagination that seems boundless! The album features two long tracks, both recorded in Krakow – "Strapling" and "Muffit". CD

Ballister (Nilssen-Love/Rempis/Lonberg-Holm)Znachki Stilyag ... CD
Aerophonic, 2020. New Copy ... $8.99
Dave Rempis is one of the most consistently deft saxophonists we've ever heard – able to stop on a dime, take a turn, change back again, all while always coming up with new musical ideas – which he does beautifully here, in a series of long improvisations with the Ballister trio of Paal Nilssen-Love on drums and percussion, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics! And it's not just Dave's lack of a hyphenated last name that makes him so quickly creative – as his response to the efforts of his bandmates here is amazing – sometimes out front, almost directing them – other times following slightly behind, and putting things into order while the percussion, cello, and electronics are allowed much stronger sonic freeplay. Titles include "Old Worms", "Hotel Mary Poppins", and "F*ck The Money Changers". CD

Darlene LoveMany Sides Of Love – The Complete Reprise Recordings (teal vinyl pressing) (2022 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Reprise/Real Gone, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $29.99
A great lost chapter in the career of Darlene Love – a soul singer who's maybe known best for her early work with Phil Spector in The Crystals – but who ended up with a long legacy in music, which is partly added to by this collection! The core of the set features some mid 60s recordings that Love made as the lead singer in The Blossoms – a great west coast female soul trio, represented here by a number of excellent singles for Reprise Records – including "That's When The Tears Start", "Good Good Lovin", "My Love Come Home", "Lover Boy", "Deep Into My Heart", and "Let Your Love Shine On Me". Those cuts are followed by two solo efforts for Reprise by Darlene – "Too Late To Say You're Sorry" and "If" – then preceded by a few other unusual sessions, including the track "TV Commercials" with guitarist Barney Kessel, and two Lee Hazlewood-related projects on "What Are We Gonna Do In 64" and "3625 Groovy Street", both issued under the name of The Wildcats. The set ends with a few cuts from later years – that time when Darlene was getting attention from a whole new generation – on the tracks "River Deep Mountain High", "He's Sure The Boy I Love", and two versions of "Mr Fix It". Ace (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
C'mon, you can never have too much Love – particularly the beautiful, soulful voice of Darlene Love – and this fantastic compilation from Ace puts together a diverse set of singles from the 60s & 70s, a few rare demos, plus hard to find tunes from earlier and later years! Darlene had an incredibly wide ranging career, from girl group leader, to in demand session singer, to Broadway star, but this set is heavily steeped in the soaring, beautifully arranged solo soul singles and remarkably diverse stuff with her group The Blossoms – plus some really cool session tunes with Dick Dale, Hal Blaine and others. Gorgeous! Titles include "That's When The Tears Start", "So Much Love", "The Gospel Truth", "Good, Good Lovin'" and more with the Blossoms, solo tracks "Too Late To Say You're Sorry", "Ooh-Wee Baby", "Let Him Walk Away", "Mr Fix It" and more, "King Of The Surf Guitar" with Dick Dale & The Del Tones, "Drummer Boy Plays For Me" with Hal Blaine, and much more. 24 tracks in all. LoveFour Sail ... LP
Elektra, 1969. Very Good+ ... $43.99
Much more of a hard rock affair than the group's third LP – kind of a return to the heavy guitars of Da Capo after the baroque beauty of Forever Changes – but a stone winner nonetheless! Arthur Lee's genius is still firmly in place, and although there's a back to basics rock feel on the record, it's still touched by the madness that haunted earlier records – and crackles with a drugged-up intensity that would still make it a hell of an album, even if it was the only one the band ever recorded! Titles include "Robert Montgomery", "I'm With You", "Your Friend & Mine – Neil's Song", "August", "Always See Your Face", "Talking In My Sleep", "Nothing", and "Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

LoveOut There ... CD
Blue Thumb/Big Beat (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Lesser-known work by Love – recorded immediately after the group's seminal records on Elektra, with a slightly different sound! The CD brings together tracks from the albums Out Here and False Start – both of which feature the band moving back to basics, working in a harder rocking style that has less of the baroque arrangements of albums like Da Capo or Forever Changes. Arthur Lee's still as incredible as ever – with that slightly mad vocal approach that gives even the most mundane tunes a real edge – and the guitar work's supported by an even heavier style of rhythm, one that almost gives a few tracks some nice funky moments. CD features 14 tracks in all, including "Gimi A Little Break", "Nice To Be", "Listen To My Song", "I'll Pray For You", "Love Is Coming", "Signed DC", "Gather Round", and "Love Is More Than Words Or Better Late Than Never". T-Electric/PTG (Netherlands), 1980. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
A nicely grooving soul album from Love Committee – who are probably best known for their earlier disco songs, but we really dig this 1980 self-titled album for the mellower numbers – the best of which have a smooth midtempo groove that's as tasty as ever! A few of the numbers were co-written by Eddie Levert of The O'Jays, an indication of the style LC were going for, and they hit it nicely! Titles include "Love People Theme", "Ain't It a Shame", "You Are the One for Me","Boogie Papers", "Who Can We Trust", "I Wanna Make Love to You", and "I Made A Mistake". This Vinyl Masterpiece edition has 2 bonus tracks: longer versions of "I Made A Mistake" and "Boogie Papers". CD

Love SculptureForms & Feelings ... LP
Parrot, 1969. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Wonderful work from Love Sculpture – a heavy British trio from the end of the 60s – and one that features a young Dave Edmunds on guitar! There's a slight bluesy undercurrent in Dave's style, but the music also has that tightly compressed sound that would emerge more strongly during his hit solo years – yet which is presented here with some very nice rough edges. Songwriting is especially great – a fresh approach to territory that was beginning to sound a bit stale in the hands of some of the group's contemporaries – presented here with a clean, lean sound that's almost a precursor to power pop at points, yet which still has a heavier late 60s rock feel. Titles include "In The Land Of The Few", "Seagull", "People People", "Mars", "Sabre Dance", "Farandole", and "You Can't Catch Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Classic 70s female soul – and one of the best albums ever recorded by Love Unlimited – a trio of ladies recording with Barry White during his glory years! The album's got a really incredible approach – partly in the mode of older female group soul, but also done with a hipper, more righteous style – one that pushes the sound past older standards for the music, yet which falls into none of the disco cliches of the time. The album includes a great vocal version of "Love's Theme", plus the group's totally killer "Move Me No Mountain" – and the tracks "I Love You So, Never Gonna Let You Go", "Share A Little Love In Your Heart", and "I Needed Love – You Were There". RCA/P&C, 1972. Used ... $5.99
A tremendous little record from Love Peace & Happiness – a great vocal trio from the early 70s, and one who really shine with this overlooked gem for RCA! The trio were part of the New Birth/Nite Liters universe that producer Harvey Fuqua brought to the label at the time – and they've got a hip sound that's right up there with the other two groups – with whom they were very intimately involved – working here with arrangements from Fuqua that are almost his contribution to post-Motown sounds in the 70s, the way that Holland-Dozier-Holland were working at Invictus. Ann Bogan really soars with righteous leads in the group – and gets equal support from brothers Leslie and Melvin Wilson – who really help underscore some of the bolder elements of the music – especially on the funkier cuts. Titles include "I Don't Want To Do Wrong", "Lonesome Lonely & Alone", "Don't Knock My Love", "If I Owned The World", "You Can't Cheat the Cheater", "Stay", "Mind", and "You've Chosen Me". AFJ (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
This isn't the first time that Joe McPhee and Paal Nilssen-Love have recorded together – but the set may well be their best – a beautiful batch of duets that have the pair really blowing us away with their sympathetic spontaneous creative activity! There's a spiritual core here that really lives up to the title – not just on the duo's rendition of the famous gospel theme, which has Joe on an especially strong tenor sax solo – and the whole record has a rising righteousness that makes it an instant classic, and a key part of the canon of both artists – not just another set of live improvisations. Joe plays pocket trumpet and tenor, Paal plays the drums in his usual freewheeling style – and titles include "Voices", "Mr DC", "Consideration", "Big Joe Tell Me What You Know", and "Circumstantial Evidence". Qui est Babs Robert? Turns out he's a hell of a saxophonist from the Belgian scene at the start of the 70s – an amazingly soulful player who's got just the right sort of spiritual vibe to live up to the image on the cover! Babs plays alto, tenor, and even a bit of electric tenor too – plus wood flute, percussion, and other instruments – in a group of players who often handle an equal range of instruments themselves! The music is a mix of modal groovers and freer, more spiritual sounds – a space that's somewhere between the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Pharoah Sanders on Impulse Records – carried off by an equally obscure, but equally excellent group of musicians. Titles include "Marrow Bone", "Extra Pol Action", "Architexture", "PACM", "Pro Forma 1", and "His Master's Noise". LP, Vinyl record album

MoWest/Universal (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 About June 22, 2022
The incredible lost album from the group Sisters Love – material slated for release in the early 70s, but never saw the light of day, save for a handful of singles – a mix of rootsier southern soul and impeccable west coast funk styles, finally brought to light! Sisters Love came to Motown/MoWest at a transitional time for the label(s), who sent the group on tour, released a rare few singles in the US & UK, but didn't get the group over into the public consciousness the way it deserved. Great songs that were written, produced & arranged by the cream of the crop of soulful talents – Willie Hutch, Hal Davis, Gene Page, Gloria Jones & Pamela Sawyer – but this is the Sisters Love show, and they shine brilliantly! Titles include the amazing "Fast Mack" (purportedly submitted for the soundtrack to The Mack – and it's funky enough!), "Communication", "Mr Fix-It Man", "You've Got My Mind", "Just A Little Understanding", "I'm Learning To Trust My Man", "Giving Up", "Do What You Gotta Do","You've Got To Make Your Choice", "Sweet Inspiration", "Give Me Your Love" and "Turn On Your Love Light". A great little batch of jazzy soul by Vince Andrews – a vocalist and sax player from Columbus, Ohio – which is where he recorded this obscure early 80s set, a record with a vibe that's maybe more 70s overall! The record has a great little groove – kind of that Charles Earland stepping vibe that we love on his late 70s Muse recordings – supported by some sweet organ work from Bobby Floyd, a player we don't know at all, but who really shines here! Most of the cuts just feature a trio – with Matt Wagner on drums, and Vince on alto, tenor, soprano sax, and flute – working through mostly original material that includes "Love Oh Love", "Akila", "The One Who Needs You", "Being With You", and "Vibrating With Vince". CD features a bonus alternate take of "Love Oh Love". CD

Eric Burdon & The AnimalsWhen I Was Young – The MGM Recordings 1967/1968 (Winds Of Change/Twain Shall Meet/Everyone Of Us/Love Is/bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD
MGM/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $44.99 65.99
A fantastic package of work from The Animals – all their great second chapter albums for MGM, offered up here with bonus tracks too! First up is Winds Of Change, presented in both stereo and mono mixes – one of The Animals' most psychedelic outings ever – and also a bit funky at times too! Production by Tom Wilson is really great – echoey at most moments, with a kind of "flash" and shimmer around the drums that really spaces things out, and almost gives a Velvets sort of feel to the proceedings. The group's bluesier roots are still in place at times – but these have also been tripped-out and abstracted too, in modes that are a few years ahead of other blues rock combos on the rise. Titles include "It's All Meat", "Winds Of Change", "Poem By The Sea", "Yes I Am Experienced", "Hotel Hell", "San Franciscan Nights", and "Man Woman". Next is Twain Shall Meet – a set that's not as tripped-out as some of their other late 60s work, and which almost starts to show Eric Burdon's rising love of soul and funk! The sound is still pretty rockish overall – but there's some great use of bass rumbling at the bottom – bringing up a rumbling quality that fits nicely with Burdon's somewhat bleak presentation of the lyrics at various points. Production by Tom Wilson almost has a raspy, lo-fi sort of feel – different than the bluesier roots of the group, and almost a precursor of indie work in decades to come! Titles include the classic "Sky Pilot", plus "Monterey", "Just The Thought", "Closer To The Truth", "No Self Pity", "Orange & Red Beams", and "We Love You Lil". Every One Of Us is a real gem from The Animals' overlooked late 60s years on MGM – a time when the group were easily making some of the most inventive music on the label! The styles here are even wider than before – definitely an attempt to showcase "every one of us" that made up the group – in a blend of spacey sounds, gentle folksy moments, and some of the rougher tones of previous MGM records. Many titles were written only by Burdon – a bit of a change from before – and showcase an increased use of acoustic guitar alongside his bleak vocals. Titles include "The Immigrant Lad", "Year Of The Guru", "Serenade To A Sweet Lady", "White Houses", "New York 1963/America 1968", and "Uppers & Downers". Next is Love Is – a fantastic double-length set from The Animals – recorded in LA in the late 60s, and with plenty of great Sunset Strip influences in the mix! The band here is different than before – with Zoot Money handling both organ and piano, plus a bit of vocals, and Andy Summers joining in on guitar – and production is by the group itself, who shake off some of the trippier styles of previous records, and almost go for a "live in studio" sort of sound! There's a confluence of styles here that's really great – some of the blues of the group's roots, bits of Eric Burdon's growing love of soul, and some fuzzier touches as well. Some tracks are quite long jams, and titles include "Gemini", "Madman", "As The Years Go Passing By", "To Love Somebody", and "I'm An Animal". Bonus tracks include "Monterey (mono single)", "White Houses (single stereo)", "Anything (single)", "Gratefully Dead", "Ain't That So", "When I was Young", "A Girl Named Sandoz", "River Deep Mountain High (single stereo)", and "Sky Pilot (parts 1 & 2)", CD

Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 3CD ... $21.99 38.99
Three full albums from Atlantic Starr – with lots of bonus tracks too! All In The Name Of Love has Atlantic Star at the height of their catchy commercial fame – bouncing along with rhythms that crossover nicely to the mainstream, yet still keep a bit of their previous funky edge intact! The groove here is almost in the style that Atlantic Starr inspired in so many other younger groups in the earlier part of the 80s – although it's also a bit more polished too. Most instrumentation is electric, and tunes are mostly written by the team of David and Wayne Lewis – both of whom sing on the record. Barbara Weathers also handles female vocals, and titles include "Once Lover At A Time", "Let The Sun In", "My Mistake", "I'm In Love", "Always", "Don't Take Me For Granted", and a version of Sam Dees' "All In The Name Of Love". We're Moving Up is one of the last in a long run of 80s hits from Atlantic Starr – a group who were already moving up the soul charts before the release of the album! The set continues their move into commercial territory started a few records before, but it also shakes loose of some of the colder sounds of 80s soul – and picks up a somewhat warmer vibe on the keyboards and rhythms. Porscha Martin sings female vocals with the group, and titles include "Under Your Spell", "Love Ain't Fair", "Woman's Touch", "We're Movin Up", "My Sugar", "You Deserve The Best", and "Don't Start The Fire". Love Crazy is a set that's got a nice change in groove from Atlantic Starr – a sound that's still got a lot of their best elements intact, but which also seems to bring on some of the best elements that were being introduced by the British scene too! Rhythms at points are maybe more in the Soul II Soul or Lisa Stansfield modes – which makes for some great tunes that really reinvigorate the group and update them for a new jack generation, while still holding onto the charms of the past. A few moments get more in a mellow quiet storm sound – all with the balance that made earlier Atlantic Starr albums classics – on titles that include "Love Crazy", "Hold On", "Masterpiece", "Girl Your Love's So Fine", "I Can't Wait", "If You Knew What's Good For You", and "Come Lover". 3CD package features all albums in tiny LP-styled jackets – with bonus tracks that include "One Lover At A Time (ext)", "Always (edit)", "Let The Sun Shine IN (ext rmx)", "All In The Name Of Love (single)", "My First Love (ext)", "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth ext mix)", "My First Love (7" edit)", and "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth underground mix)". Uno Melodic/Charly (UK), 1983. Used ... $18.99
An incredible album by Roy Ayers – but one that's often overlooked because it was a rare indie effort issued between Roy's years at Polydor and Columbia! The session's Roy's only full album for Uno Melodic – the label he formed to showcase the talents of Sylvia Striplin, Ladies Of The Eighties, and others – and it's done in a snapping, boogie-styled groove that's very similar to the work by other Uno acts at the time. There's still plenty of the late Polydor Roy in the mix too – especially on the album's mellower numbers, which glide along nicely with all the right jazzy touches we love in a classic Ayers groove! Highlights include the excellent "Chicago", a really dark funk track with a mad descending groove; the Fela-styled "Black Family"; the warmly jazzy "Lots Of Love", an instrumental with vibes along strings; and the bass bumping "Everybody", a wicked later funk number! Other tracks include "And Then We Were One", "DC City", "Drive", and "Fast Money" – all great too! CD

One of our favorite Roy Ayers albums of all time – and an overlooked gem from Roy's late 70s years at Polydor! This set's a bit more laidback and less clubby than some other Ayers work of the period – which means it's got this wonderful jazzy groove throughout – a sweet mix of midtempo modern soul and the vibes-based style that Roy kept on perfecting at the time. Tracks are longer than usual, and they really open up in a way that fits the title – slinky and seductive, but never soppy or commercial at all – that really special blend of warmth and wisdom that's always made Roy Ayers so great. Titles include the sublime title track "Love Fantasy", which begins with Roy chatting up some girl in the intro, then sliding into a nice smooth jazz funk tip on the chorus – plus the great cut "Sigh", a sweet little bubbling number with a wonderfully breathy quality! Other titles include "Believe In Yourself", "Betcha Gonna", "Baby Bubba", and "Rock Your Roll". CD

Philly singer Mark Baxter bills himself as the "ladies choice" when he's on the stage – but he's got a warm, mature vocal style that's right up there with some of the greats of his city from years back – including some of the bigger male vocalists to record for the Philadelphia International label in the 70s! Baxter continues that legacy here in a nice way – especially hitting that mellow midtempo groove that Philly International had after the disco years – updated here with some more contemporary production and instrumentation, courtesy of the Ingram family. Titles include "Already Missing You", "Where Is The Love", "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby", "You're My Latest My Greatest Inspiration", "Love So True", and "Standing Right Here". CD

Shirley BasseyLove, Life & Feelings ... LP
United Artists, 1976. Very Good+ ... $2.99
A serious British session arranged and conducted by Arthur Greenslade – done in a mood that's often mellow, and which has more dark corners than we'd expect from Shirley – a sad-tinged sound that often features a bit of organ brewing down in the low range of the sound spectrum. Bassey's vocals are surprisingly well suited to the setting, and there's a restraint here that really helps her take one of her best new steps in years – one that's perhaps a bit too late in her career to really make a difference, but which would have really done wonders at the start of the 70s! Titles include "Alone Again Naturally", "Midnight Blue", "Isn't It A Shame", "What I Did For Love", "Born To Lose", "The Hungry Years", "The Way I Want To Touch You", and "You've Made Me So Very Happy". Louis BellsonJourney Into Love ... LP
Norgran, Early 50s. Very Good ... $26.99
An incredibly strange record, and one of the few excursions into mood music ever taken by the Verve label! Unlike Bellson's usual pounding jazz albums, this one's a batch of lush, romantic arrangements – with light solos weaving through the mix by Willie Smith on alto, George Poole on flute, and Juan Tizol on trombone. Solos are actually pretty great, and the album feels a bit like some of Ellington's moodier work. The whole thing's packaged in a very otherwordly image by David Stone Martin – one unlike any other cover he ever did – and it includes tracks like "Mirror On The Water", "Lonesome", "Be My Pretty Flower", and "Dancing On A Moonbeam". LP, Vinyl record album
(Heavy yellow label pressing with deep groove and trumpeter logo. Vinyl has some light crackles at the start of each side, and a click on one track – but is nice and clean overall. Cover has light wear, but is nice too.)

Benitez & ValenciaImpossible Love Songs From 60s Quito ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $32.99
Beautiful work from the Ecuadorian duo of Gonzalo Benitez and Luis Alberto Valencia – a duo who have this wonderfully heartbreaking way of putting over a tune – often working with just spare accompaniment on acoustic guitar, which really lets you focus on the amazing quality of their vocals! In a way, the approach is similar to the Mexican and Cuban trio style – but with just a duo handling the harmonies, and usually just one guitar in the mix, the sound is even more up-close and personal – very much out of time, despite the 60s reference in the title – with a kind of ancient quality that really gets at the heart of love, loss, and life. The package is beautifully done – in the best Honest Jons tradition – and titles include "Las Tres Marias", "Dicha", "Sombras", "Quimera", "Suplica", "Lamparilla", "Tus Ojeras", "Limosna", "Invocacion Sentimental", "Nocturno", "Desesperacion", and "Imploracion Indigena". Great work from a surprisingly durable pairing – one that maybe seemed to be something of an accident at first, but which has gone on to redefine the recent careers of Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga! The duo are in as fine form here as on their previous record – swinging with a very old school, jazz-based vibe as they take on tracks from the songbook of Cole Porter – material that seems perfectly tuned for the way the singers interact – modern and classic, June and December, a match that's much more made in heaven than anyone might have guessed! The pair duet on "Night & Day", "Love For Sale", "I Concentrate On You", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "Dream Dancing", and "It's De-Lovely" – while Tony sings solo on "So In Love" and "Just One Of Those Things" – and Gaga performs alone on "Let's Do It" and "Do I Love You". Raw Fusion/X Toys (Japan), 2008. Used ... $9.99
One of the most soulful sets we've ever heard from the Raw Fusion label – work that's heavy on influences from 60s and 70s soul, but which also has a slightly cosmic undercurrent too! The rhythms here have that crisp, contemporary groove that always makes Raw Fusion great – but the songs are also filled with warm horns, clubby basslines, and compelling soul vocals from singers who include Christin Deralas, Karl Wagner, Abby Joyce, Carmen Hendricks, and Kylie Auldist! Bennson's got a really great way of bringing these talents together – using them to bridge the gap between classic and 21st Century soul styles – in a really focused groove of his own. A real killer that lives up to the promise we first heard in Raw Fusion years ago – with titles that include "Incredible", "Let The Love", "Accidental Lover", "Whatever It Is", "Can't Get Enough", "Fly High", "One Minute Left", "Step To The Plate", and "The Greatest". Art BlakeyLike Someone In Love ... CD
Blue Note, 1960. Used ... $13.99
A landmark album that had one of the best versions of the Jazz Messengers taking a big step forward – thanks to some increased songwriting by the group's young tenor genius – Wayne Shorter! Shorter's tunes take up all of the second half of the record, and all of them have gone onto become classics – "Giantis", "Sleeping Dancer Sleep On", and "Noise In The Attic" – all tunes that hint at the modernism that was to come in Wayne's music, and which especially seem to push his tenor and the trumpet of Lee Morgan into the range of more mature colors and tones that would grace their music as the 60s moved on. Meanwhile, there's a rock-solid rhythm drive at the core – Art Blakey on drums, Jymie Merritt on bass, and the great Bobby Timmons on piano – still making a strong contribution to the group. Lee Morgan wrote the nine minute tune "Johnny's Blue" on side one – which also includes a beautiful version of "Like Someone In Love" – a masterpiece in soulful lyricism! CD

20th Century/Mr Bongo (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 27.98
Brilliant work from this long-lost Barry White protege! Tom Brock was one of the leading lights in Barry's stable of sweet mid 70s soul talents – a great writer who contributed songs to the legendary Gloria Scott album, and a heck of a great mellow soul singer on his own – with a style that's right up there with work by Leon Ware, Leroy Hutson, and some of our favorite 70s soul heroes! This album's the only one that Brock ever recorded – a great blend of mellow soul tunes, ballads, and a few tracks that have a nicely kicking Barry White-styled funk sound to them. White produced and arranged with Gene Page – and the whole album's great – the kind of mellow soul treasure you'll play again and again and again over the years! Includes the massive "I Love You More & More", plus "There's Nothing In This World That Can Stop Me From Loving You", "Shake Me Wake Me", "Naked As The Day I Was Born", "If We Don't Make It, Nobody Can", "Have a Nice Weekend Baby", and "The Love We Share". Expansion (UK), Late 90s/2008. New Copy ... $8.99 19.99
The long-overdue release of Inside My Love – a sublime little set recorded by Trina Broussard in the late 90s – originally planned for the So-So Def label, but never properly issued at the time! The album's years ahead of most soul of the time – a great precursor to the Neo Soul explosion that major labels would finally get behind in the 21st Century, but which still left them scratching their heads back in the 90s – and failing to get music this great out to the market. Thankfully, Expansion have helped fix a decade-old mistake – and they're letting Trina's warmly soulful sound sparkle beautifully with this well-done reissue. Broussard's got a wonderfully classy approach to her music – one that's been appreciated in subsequent releases, but which comes through even more clearly here – a great sense of poise that's almost classic in a Phyllis Hyman sort of way. Titles include "Losing My Mind", "Why Do I Feel So Sad", "All I Need Is You", "All Night Long", "Not Around", "Remember Me", "Sailing", "Say You Really Love", and "Inside My Love". CD also features the bonus track "It's Not Really Christmas". CD

Polydor, 1971. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A lost treasure from James Brown & The JBs – a vintage live performance from the early 70s, and one that captures the group at the height of their powers! The format here is very similar to the excellent Revolution Of The Mind set – a totally funky, totally righteous live performance that has James and the group even more energized than in the studio – working with the kind of razor-sharp intensity that made them a legendary funk act – leaping from tune to tune with nary a break at all! Bobby Byrd acts as the MC, and joins James for a bit of vocals – and the group at this point still includes Bootsy Collins on bass, plus loads of great guitar from Catfish Collins, and Fred Wesley on trombone and Jabo Starks on drums. Dave Matthews handled some of the arrangements – and titles include "Soul Power", "Sex Machine", "Bewildered", "It's A New Day", "Ain't It Funky Now", "Brother Rapp", "Super Bad", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose", and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag/I Got You/I Got The Feelin". Some tracks augment the ensemble with a string quartet – who give the material an appropriately sad tone, perfect for Lenita's blue-styled vocals. Fat Possum, 2017. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
The first album in decades from Memphis soul legend Don Bryant – a singer who hardly even gave us any recordings back when he was in his prime! Don was one of the lesser lights at the famous Hi Records – not as successful as Ann Peebles or Al Green, but steeped in the same wonderful sound as those great artists – and still going wonderfully strong after all these years! In fact, the album almost feels more like some lost Hi tapes from Bryant's glory days than a contemporary set – as his voice is wonderful, the songs are tight, and both the production and instrumentation have just the right sort of classic approach – soulful, but without overstating things in any sort of cloying "resurrection" mode. Instead, Don's just right on top, and right in the pocket – doing his thing wonderfully on titles that include "Don't Give Up On Love", "I Got To Know", "First You Cry", "It Was Jealousy", "Something About You", "Can't Hide The Hurt", "One Ain't Enough", and "A Nickel & A Nail". And Pate's thrown in a few more upbeat moments amidst the laidback, slow-stepping tracks that were always Bryson's best stock in trade – although we still love the mellow moments the best! Duets between Jerry Butler and Brenda Lee Eager – done as serious, adult oriented soul tracks, one side of the album in an optimistic "The Love We Have" setting, the other in a sadder "The Love We Had" setting – both of them handled in a mode that's far far different than Jerry's 60s duets with Betty Everett. As with most of Jerry's Mercury work at the time, there's some wonderful tunes on the album – including a few numbers written by Terry Callier or Billy Butler – and the whole thing's produced with a subtle approach that creates a solid warm mellow soul vibe throughout. Possibly the greatest album ever by the legendary Chicago soul singer Terry Callier! Terry's rich mellow voice is mixed with superb arrangements from the Cadet studio team, with Charles Stepney at the head, and the result is completely sublime. The songs are longer than on earlier albums – and spun out with a complex groove that mixes equal parts of jazz, folk, and soul with the soaring spiritual vibe that was running through the Chicago scene at the time. The first side alone is the stuff that legends are made of – with classic tracks like "Dancing Girl", "What Color is Love", and "You Goin' Miss Your Candyman" all in a row, sewn together in a wash of love, soul, and emotion that you'd be hard pressed to find on any other album from the time. Cerrone really set up a whole new blueprint for club here – stretching things out plenty, and layering in subtle time and chord shifts that expose the proggish influences that filtered into French club as the 70s wore on! This great 2LP set features a whole disc of bonus material – "Searching (12" Jim Burgess mix)", "Glow Of Love (12" promo long version)", "Searching (Tom Moulton mix)", and "It's A Girl's Affair (12" Mike Maurro classic disco rmx)". Childish GambinoAwaken My Love (with download) ... LP
Glassnote, 2017. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Childish Gambino once again transcends anything you might be expecting from an actor/musician – this is not some vain star trip at all, but a worthy, boundary-busting effort – and a pretty sizable step away from idiosyncratic, yet accessible hip hop into spacey pop funk! Strong stuff, following his own path in respectable, highly rewarding fashion. Includes "Me And Your Mama", "Have Some Love", "Boogieman", "Zombies", "Riot", "Redbone", "Terrified", "California", "Terrified", "The Night Me & Your Mama Met" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stanley ClarkeJourney To Love ... LP
Columbia, 1975. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Stanley Clarke may be on a journey to love – but that doesn't mean that the album's too sweet or romantic! Many tracks here still have the harder edge and sharper lines you'd expect from Clarke's key 70s fusion reputation – the kind of rock-influenced styles that crossed over big at the time to huge new audiences – and which made Stan way more than just another electric jazz musician. Some moments feature a large array of backup players, but others are quite spacious, and almost contemplative – filled with those new notes Clarke was getting out of his instrument at the time! Titles include "Silly Putty", "Journey To Love", "Hello Jeff", "Song To John", and "Concerto For Jazz/Rock Orchestra". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has ring and edge wear and is bent at the top right corner and near the opening.)

Leonard CohenSongs Of Love & Hate (180 gram white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Columbia, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 28.99
One of the more heavily brooding albums ever cut by Leonard Cohen – and also one of the best – the iconic Songs Of Love And Hate from 1971! Cohen's aptly titled third LP, with the nice spare approach to production that most of his early work had, even more stripped down, with voice and acoustic guitar the focus, and some tasteful, more lush texture when the mood strikes – and oh so incredible wordplay and phrasing from the iconic maverick poet/songwriter. Classic bummers including "Avalanche", "Last Year's Man", "Dress Rehearsal Rag", "Diamonds In The Mine", "Love Calls You By Your Name", "Famous Blue Raincoat", "Sing Another Song, Boys" and "Joan Of Arc". CoilLove's Secret Domain (30th anniversary edition – amber vinyl pressing) ... LP
Wax Trax, 1991. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $37.99 40.00
A really surprising set from Coil – a record that has the group sticking strongly to their roots as a more experimental industrial act, at a time when so many of their contemporaries from that scene were just heading for the dancefloor! Make no mistake, there's still plenty of groove-oriented moments – but there's also plenty of weird sonic elements taking place too – all sorts of odd sounds that are abstracted beyond their referent, but handled skillfully – at a level that maybe has Coil maturing a lot more than so many others who were working in this territory. This isn't noise for noise sake, but very thoughtful repositing of a variety of different sounds and musical elements – served up in ways that are maybe even better than anything else the group did on previous records. Titles include "Dark River", "Teenage Lightning", "Disco Hospital", "The Snow", "Further Back & Faster", "Windopane", "Titan ARch", "Chaostrophy", and "Love's Secret Domain". LP, Vinyl record album
(A beautiful heavy vinyl pressing – with a 16 page booklet of notes!)

Wonderful stuff by Nat – truly one of his greatest Capitol vocal albums, and set to great arrangements by Nelson Riddle, very much in a classic mode. Natalie ColeUnforgettable With Love ... LP
Elektra, 1991. Very Good+ 2LP ... $33.99
An unforgettable album from Natalie Cole – a record that came at a time when her R&B career was faltering slightly, and a set that not only helped Natalie reach a new level of sophistication in her music – but also find a huge new audience too! If the title sounds familiar, it's because it's the name of a huge hit for Natalie's dad, the great Nat King Cole – who makes a surprising appearance here via the magic of technology, as he duets with his daughter on the album's hit title track. There's a jazzy vibe to the whole set – thanks in part to some piano work by Ike Cole too – and titles include "The Very Thought Of You", "Paper Moon", "Mona Lisa", 'This Can't Be Love", "Lush Life", "That Sunday That Summer", "Avalon", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Nature Boy", "Darling Je Vous Aime Beaucoup", "Thou Swell", and "Unforgettable". LP, Vinyl record album
(European pressing. Cover has light edge wear, while the back has a spot of braille tape and light surface wear.)
