Arashi (Akira Sakata/Johan Berthling/Paal Nilssen Love)Jikan ... CD
PNL (Norway), 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 14.99
Legendary Japanese reedman Akira Sakata joins younger improvisers Johan Berthling on bass and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums and percussion – and really seems to shape their performance, given the results of the record! Sakata blows both alto sax and bass clarinet – always with that rich, raw tone that's made him so great for so many decades – and he also vocalizes occasionally, with an earthy quality that's very powerful, and very different than his saxophone work. Paal is maybe a bit more restrained than usual, really letting Sakata set the scene for most numbers – then finding the right way to embrace and embolden the sound – and Berthling proves again that he's one of the more sensitive improvisers in recent years, while still very much holding his own in the trio. Titles include "Jikan", "Saitaro Bushi Arashi", "Yamanoue No Okura", and "Tsuioku". CD

Ballister (Dave Rempis/Fred Lonberg Holm/Paal Nilssen Love)Smash & Grab ... CD
Aerophonic, 2023. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Brilliant work from this well-matched trio of improvisers – a group who definitely smash and grab in a highly sonic way – thanks to cello and electronics from Fred Lonberg-Holm, drums and percussion from Paal Nilssen Love, and alto, tenor, and baritone saxes from the great Dave Rempis! If you know the players in other formats, you'll know what they're capable of – and if you've heard them as Ballister before, you'll know that they really seem to set each other on fire – often working with an intensity that's breathtaking, very much at the level that Paal serves up on some of his own work as a leader. Fred uses the cello in a very different way than most other classical and jazz – and Dave, as always, is incredible with his freeform sense of creativity throughout. Titles include "Smash", "Grab", and "Even More Smashing". CD

Gjerstad/Moberg/Nilssen-LoveTime Sound Shape ... CD
PNL, 2022. New Copy Gatefold ... $11.99 14.99
A set that's every bit as evocative as its title – as the album features one long improvisation that's filled with wonderful sounds – work on gongs from Paal Nilssen-Love, accordion from Kalle Moberg, and alto, flute, and Bb clarinet from Frode Gjerstad! Just the instrumentation alone will highlight the unique vibe of the record – especially as Nilssen-Love doesn't touch the drum kit at all – and the whole thing spins out with a sensitivity that's wonderful, and definitely concerned with time, sound, and shape in the overall process of improvisation! The reed lines sound beautiful next to the gongs – and the accordion is used in ways that are inventive, but gentle too – neither traditional accordion, yet also without some of the more aggressive qualities of avant work on the instrument. Darlene LoveMany Sides Of Love – The Complete Reprise Recordings ... CD
Reprise/Real Gone, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $6.99 19.99
A great lost chapter in the career of Darlene Love – a soul singer who's maybe known best for her early work with Phil Spector in The Crystals – but who ended up with a long legacy in music, which is partly added to by this collection! The core of the set features some mid 60s recordings that Love made as the lead singer in The Blossoms – a great west coast female soul trio, represented here by a number of excellent singles for Reprise Records – including "That's When The Tears Start", "Good Good Lovin", "My Love Come Home", "Lover Boy", "Deep Into My Heart", and "Let Your Love Shine On Me". Those cuts are followed by two solo efforts for Reprise by Darlene – "Too Late To Say You're Sorry" and "If" – then preceded by a few other unusual sessions, including the track "TV Commercials" with guitarist Barney Kessel, and two Lee Hazlewood-related projects on "What Are We Gonna Do In 64" and "3625 Groovy Street", both issued under the name of The Wildcats. The set ends with a few cuts from later years – that time when Darlene was getting attention from a whole new generation – on the tracks "River Deep Mountain High", "He's Sure The Boy I Love", and two versions of "Mr Fix It". LoveForever Changes (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Elektra, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 27.99
What can we say? This is one of the greatest albums of all time! The record's got a sound that's completely unique – as crack LA garage punk rock meets Hollywood baroque production, and the result is an amazing bit of loud guitar noise backed by strings and horns, all graced by the godlike vocals of the great Arthur Lee. Forever Changes is a milestone in rock – an incredibly bleak document about insanity, escape, and the coming revolution that never happened. Think of all the best moments of Wild In The Streets, Zabriske Point, and Invocation of My Demon Brother rolled into one – and you'll only have a tiny slice of the picture! A record that will haunt us until the day we die – filled with incredible songs like "Alone Again Or", "Old Man", "Daily Planet", "Red Telephone", and "Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark & Hilldale". LoveOut There ... CD
Blue Thumb/Big Beat (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Lesser-known work by Love – recorded immediately after the group's seminal records on Elektra, with a slightly different sound! The CD brings together tracks from the albums Out Here and False Start – both of which feature the band moving back to basics, working in a harder rocking style that has less of the baroque arrangements of albums like Da Capo or Forever Changes. Arthur Lee's still as incredible as ever – with that slightly mad vocal approach that gives even the most mundane tunes a real edge – and the guitar work's supported by an even heavier style of rhythm, one that almost gives a few tracks some nice funky moments. CD features 14 tracks in all, including "Gimi A Little Break", "Nice To Be", "Listen To My Song", "I'll Pray For You", "Love Is Coming", "Signed DC", "Gather Round", and "Love Is More Than Words Or Better Late Than Never". A surprising little gem from the late 60s UK blues rock scene – and one of the first efforts from a young Dave Edmunds! Love UnlimitedLove Unlimited – The Uni, MCA, & 20th Century Records Singles 1972 to 1975 ... LP
Universal, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $13.99 34.99
A fantastic selection of work from one of the hippest girl groups of the 70s – the mighty Love Unlimited trio, three singers who all worked under the genius of Barry White in his prime! Unlike other girl trios of the time, who often used an older soul mode refitted with disco grooves – sometimes acting more like a chorus than a lead act – Love Unlimited always brought their full vocal strengths to play, and do a fantastic job here working in modes that rival some of the best male harmony groups of the early 70s – especially the sweet soul groups from New Jersey, New York, and Philly. And yes, Barry does kick up the groove a bit at times, but even then things are usually more in a midtempo mode, not a disco one – which makes for tremendous sounds throughout. This is the first-ever proper collection of the girls' singles from the early 70s – and titles include "Oh Love Well We Finally Made It", "Fragile Handle With Care", "Are You Sure", "I Should Have Known", "Is It Really True Boy Is It Me", "Walkin In The Rain With The One I Love", "Under The Influence Of Love", "It May Be Winter Outside", "I Love You So Never Gonna Let You Go", "I Belong To You", "So Nice To Hear", "People Of Tomorrow Are The Children Of Today", and "Share A Little Love In Your Hear LP, Vinyl record album

Joe McPhee/Paal Nilssen-LoveSong For The Big Chief ... CD
PNL (Norway), 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $11.99 16.99
A set dedicated to the legendary drummer Sunny Murray – who passed just a few days before the recording of this live set, and who also gave the world a fantastic album with Big Chief as the title – but a record that's very much in the best sort of spirit you might expect from the great Joe McPhee and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love! If anything, McPhee seems to have grown even more as a musician in recent years – really re-igniting our interest every time we get a chance to hear him, and definitely following that upsurge of intensity on the long title improvisation on this set – beginning with really soulful work on tenor, as Nilssen-Love then comes in with very strong support on drums once Joe turns on the heat! The set also features two shorter numbers, but both equally wonderful and with a new sort of energy – "A Fantasy For Lester" and "Knox". CD

Paal's definitely pacing himself here on Neumann's energy – and the saxophonist brings in a sense of soul, and maybe a more straight-pointed direction than some of the other instruments – balancing out strongly in a live performance that resonates with a very personal spirit throughout! Titles include the very long "New Dance" – plus shorter tracks "A Set Et Fro", "Det Er Kjaerlighet", and "Dett Var Dett". CD

A really amazing project from drummer Paal Nilssen-Love – one that shows just how much he's grown as both a musician and a leader in recent years – able to embrace so many styles and modes that we never would have heard during his earlier years! Here, the approach is completely unique – certainly the improvised music that you'd expect from Paal – but with sounds that also echo the "circus" in the group's name – a weaving of elements from Kalle Moberg on accordion, Thomas Johansson on trumpet, Signe Emmeluth on alto, Oddrun Likja on guitar, Christian Meass Svendson on electric and acoustic bass, and Juliana Venter on voice – an artist who can sing, speak, and make sounds that are really mindblowing. Paal handles a range of percussion next to drums – and the songs are filled with all sorts of amazing twists and turns that make for an album of delight at every new step. Titles include "Hurgulove", "Breakfast In Colombia", "Round About Lapa", "Pairs Of Three", "Bota Fogo", "Nazure De Mata", and "Hummingbird". CD

Forget the implications that the title might imply – as this large unit of improvising players comes together without any sense of collision or accident – as they work through a number of longer compositions from drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, which are balanced with plenty of individual improvisation throughout! The lineup is as large as the group's name – with work from Mats Aleklint on trombone, Per Ake Holmlander on tuba, and Marthe Lea, Kristoffer Berre Alberts, and Klaus Ellerhusen Holm on a variety of reed instruments – next to more percussion, bass, guitar, and accordion – all together making for a very great sonic range, especially when augmented with some overdubbed harp and electronics! There's a sense of tension at many points that's great, but one that has a lot of cohesion too – and titles include "Clusterfuck", "Bubbles", and "Moodplay". CD

PNL (Norway), 2014. Used 3 CDs ... $24.99
Drummer Paal Nilssen-Love is a musician we're used to hearing in smaller groups, and duo and solo sessions – but this time around, he provides a stunning debut of his Large Unit – an 11 piece ensemble that really brings out a whole new sound in Paal's music! Much of the record is improvised, but there's also a larger sense of structure too – that balance between ensemble direction and individual freedom that's run through groups from the London Jazz Composers Orchestra to the Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet! The range of expression is wonderful – much more full of color and tonal elements than usual projects we've heard from Paal – definitely a new step forward – and musicians include Thomas Johansson on cornet and flugelhorn, Mats Aleklint on trombone, Kasper Vaernes on alto and soprano, Klaus Ellerhusen Holm on alto and baritone, Borre Molstad on tuba, Ketil Gutvik on guitar, Lasse Marhaug on electronics and turntable, Jon Rune Strom and Christian Meass Svendsen on basses, and Andreas Wildhagen and Nilssen-Love on drums and percussion. A huge ensemble, and one who create sounds that we never would have expected from avant jazz drummer Paal Nilssen-Love many years back – as the whole performance resonates with Ethiopian and Brazilian elements that are very different than some of the more improvised music that we usually expect from Paal! Truth told, this isn't a new group – they were formed over a decade back – but this long live performance really gives them a chance to show off their interwoven sounds, and tremendous blend of jazz improvisation with roots and rhythms from global sources – served up here with some especially great work on saxes and reeds from Julie Kjaer, Kristoffer Berre Alberts, and Klaus Ellerhusen – whose baritone lines really shape the sound. Terrie Ex is also in the group on guitar – and titles include "Tzeta", "Gonder", "Hay Loga" "Anbessa", "Kunama & Oromiga", "Fluku", "Capoeira Mata Um", and "Zelesegna". LP, Vinyl record album

PNL (Norway), Late 90s. New Copy 5CD ... $34.99 55.00
A huge document of a really special group – a meeting of two different generations of Norwegian improvisers who made some really incredible sounds together! The Quintet only released one album back in the day, so this 5CD set really expands the group's recorded output – and stands as a tremendous tribute to an ensemble who really found a way to resonate strongly with each other. The songs are all improvised, and untitled, but have a much more tuneful vibe than you might expect – almost echoing an earlier generation of modernism that first found root in the Swedish and Norwegian scenes of the late 60s, built a bit upon ideas from a few years before, woven with some of the new freedoms of the European jazz world. There's definitely plenty of dark or frenzied moments, but there's also more subtle elements at work too – delivered beautifully by a lineup that includes Carl Magnus Neumann on alto, Bjornar Andresen and Eivind Opsvik on basses, Ketil Gutvik on guitar, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums and percussion. The use of the double basses really gives the group a distinct, unique vibe – and the box features two booklets of notes and photos that further testify to their really unique legacy. CD

The set was recorded in Chicago, and has a sound that really lives up to that city's embrace of a power trio like this – with completely frenetic work on reeds by Mars Williams, next to tumultuous drums from Paal Nilssen-Love, and some boldly propulsive bass from Kent Kessler – all spun out here over the course of three very long, freely-improvised tracks! Williams plays a few toy instruments, and Nilssen-Love handles some percussion too – both of which make for some slightly more introspective passages, which are soon balanced by more dynamic energy. RCA/P&C, 1972. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tremendous little record from Love Peace & Happiness – a great vocal trio from the early 70s, and one who really shine with this overlooked gem for RCA! The trio were part of the New Birth/Nite Liters universe that producer Harvey Fuqua brought to the label at the time – and they've got a hip sound that's right up there with the other two groups – with whom they were very intimately involved – working here with arrangements from Fuqua that are almost his contribution to post-Motown sounds in the 70s, the way that Holland-Dozier-Holland were working at Invictus. Ann Bogan really soars with righteous leads in the group – and gets equal support from brothers Leslie and Melvin Wilson – who really help underscore some of the bolder elements of the music – especially on the funkier cuts. Titles include "I Don't Want To Do Wrong", "Lonesome Lonely & Alone", "Don't Knock My Love", "If I Owned The World", "You Can't Cheat the Cheater", "Stay", "Mind", and "You've Chosen Me". MPS (Germany), 1970s. Used 4 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
6 classic 70s albums from pianist Monty Alexander – all recorded for the MPS label, at a time when he was at the height of his funky powers! Most of the work here is in a trio or quartet mode, but Monty has a way of hitting a groove that really makes the tracks come across with a much larger sense of energy – a soulful sensibility that stood out from the rest of his contemporaries on MPS, and which had him crossing over to larger US audiences than other players on the label! Alexander's talents were first explored by a few labels in the US during the 60s – but working for MPS in the 70s, he really started to shine – with a freer, more open approach to the keys of the piano – and a groove that drew both on American soul jazz and some of the Caribbean inspirations of Alexander's Jamaican roots. Guitarist Ernest Ranglin joins Alexander on about a fourth of the material here – and other players include John Clayton, Eugene Wright, and Eberhard Weber on bass – and Bobby Durham, Kenny Clare, or Jeff Hamilton on drums – plus just a bit of extra percussion from Montego Joe. 4CD set features the albums Here Comes The Sun, We've Only Just Begun, Perception, Love & Sunshine, and The Way It Is – with a total of 42 tracks in all! Delmark, 1969. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
The mighty debut of the great Luther Allison – a set that would go on to make Luther a legend, and begin a huge run of key records from the Chicago scene! There's a gritty groove here that's got some elements of funk and soul in the mix – that west side approach that really helped Chicago blues get funky near the end of the 60s – served up in a small combo with the man himself on guitar and vocals, plus a bit of extra guitar from Jimmy Dawkins – and tenor on a few tracks from Jim Conley too! There's almost a Twinight vibe to the record at times – and titles include "Why I Love The Blues", "You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now", "Bloomington Closer", "Help Me", "Love Me Mama", and "4:00 In The Morning". Black & Blue/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
Luther Allison recorded famously for Motown during the 70s – but here, he's in a much more lean, stripped-down mode – really stretching out on these extended tracks that let his superb guitar work do as much talking as his vocals! But Allison's also got a fantastic voice – one that borrows plenty of inflections from soul music, and which seems to push both the lyrics and his guitar work past the more familiar blues standards of the time – a really unique quality that's captured here perfectly by the sometimes-overlooked work of the mighty Black & Blue label from France. Luther plays harmonica on one track too – and titles include "It's Too Late", "Last Night", "Blues With A Feelin", "Love Me Papa", "I Feel So Good", and "Key To The Highway". CD features 5 more bonus tracks from the original sessions! CD

Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good ... $6.99
A very groovy album by Laurindo Almeida – one of his best bossa cookers in a swinging 60s mode! The album features lots of great acoustic guitar from Laurindo, but spun over fuller arrangements by Lex De Azvedo, Clare Fischer, and Dick Grove – all of whom get that right sort of jaunty, breezy style to really showcase the evolution of the bossa on the west coast scene of the 60s! Production is great – handled by Lex – and really still lets the gentle acoustic guitar step out in front of the rest of the group – on groovy titles that include "The Look Of Love", "Windy", "I Love You", "When I Look In Your Eyes", "A Beautiful Friendship", and "Alfie". The genius of this set is summed up in the tune "Magic Trumpet" – perhaps one of the best estimations of Herb's talents we could think of! The tune, like the entire album, is a fluid bit of magic that takes an older brass-driven mode into the far groovier styles of the 60s – an approach that fuses all the horns around Herb's boldly stated lead, and slides them all around in jaunty rhythms that are a perfect blend of the A&M groove and an imagined Latin past! Titles include "Freckles", "Magic Trumpet", "Five Minutes More", "Shadow Of Your Smile", "Plucky", "So What's New", and "It Was A Very Good Year". CD

Atlantic StarrAlways – The Warner/Reprise Recordings 1987 to 1991 (All In The Name Of Love/We're Movin Up/Love Crazy/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $17.99 38.99
Three full albums from Atlantic Starr – with lots of bonus tracks too! All In The Name Of Love has Atlantic Star at the height of their catchy commercial fame – bouncing along with rhythms that crossover nicely to the mainstream, yet still keep a bit of their previous funky edge intact! The groove here is almost in the style that Atlantic Starr inspired in so many other younger groups in the earlier part of the 80s – although it's also a bit more polished too. Most instrumentation is electric, and tunes are mostly written by the team of David and Wayne Lewis – both of whom sing on the record. Barbara Weathers also handles female vocals, and titles include "Once Lover At A Time", "Let The Sun In", "My Mistake", "I'm In Love", "Always", "Don't Take Me For Granted", and a version of Sam Dees' "All In The Name Of Love". We're Moving Up is one of the last in a long run of 80s hits from Atlantic Starr – a group who were already moving up the soul charts before the release of the album! The set continues their move into commercial territory started a few records before, but it also shakes loose of some of the colder sounds of 80s soul – and picks up a somewhat warmer vibe on the keyboards and rhythms. Porscha Martin sings female vocals with the group, and titles include "Under Your Spell", "Love Ain't Fair", "Woman's Touch", "We're Movin Up", "My Sugar", "You Deserve The Best", and "Don't Start The Fire". Love Crazy is a set that's got a nice change in groove from Atlantic Starr – a sound that's still got a lot of their best elements intact, but which also seems to bring on some of the best elements that were being introduced by the British scene too! Rhythms at points are maybe more in the Soul II Soul or Lisa Stansfield modes – which makes for some great tunes that really reinvigorate the group and update them for a new jack generation, while still holding onto the charms of the past. A few moments get more in a mellow quiet storm sound – all with the balance that made earlier Atlantic Starr albums classics – on titles that include "Love Crazy", "Hold On", "Masterpiece", "Girl Your Love's So Fine", "I Can't Wait", "If You Knew What's Good For You", and "Come Lover". 3CD package features all albums in tiny LP-styled jackets – with bonus tracks that include "One Lover At A Time (ext)", "Always (edit)", "Let The Sun Shine IN (ext rmx)", "All In The Name Of Love (single)", "My First Love (ext)", "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth ext mix)", "My First Love (7" edit)", and "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth underground mix)". A great trio setting for the tenor of Rodrigo Amado – always a treat, but especially nice here in the company of bassist Goncalo Almeida and drummer Onno Govaert – both players who have this open, elliptical way of building things up alongside Amado's lead! The tenorist has a richly soulful sound throughout, and the way the bass and drums are used is a nice evolution past both early American avant modes and later European free jazz styles – rich in sound, but never too bombastic – while freed from rhythm, but also very respectful of the tenor too. Brilliant late work from spiritual saxophone genius Albert Ayler – one of his last truly great albums! The session has none of the jazz-meets-other music feel of some of the other Impulse albums – and is more in the straight expressive style of the ESP recordings. Tracks are more reined in here – with some short themes that are almost a distillation of the freedom Ayler had been expressing for a few years, summed up beautifully in tunes that have a plaintive cry, filled with as much soul and love as Ayler could muster into his horn! Players include Donald Ayler on trumpet, Cal Cobbs on harpsichord, Alan Silva on bass, and Milford Graves on drums – and titles include "Zion Hill", "Love Flower", "Love Cry", "Ghosts", "Omega", and "Dancing Flowers". Great work from a surprisingly durable pairing – one that maybe seemed to be something of an accident at first, but which has gone on to redefine the recent careers of Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga! The duo are in as fine form here as on their previous record – swinging with a very old school, jazz-based vibe as they take on tracks from the songbook of Cole Porter – material that seems perfectly tuned for the way the singers interact – modern and classic, June and December, a match that's much more made in heaven than anyone might have guessed! The pair duet on "Night & Day", "Love For Sale", "I Concentrate On You", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "Dream Dancing", and "It's De-Lovely" – while Tony sings solo on "So In Love" and "Just One Of Those Things" – and Gaga performs alone on "Let's Do It" and "Do I Love You". Art BlakeyLike Someone In Love (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1960. Used ... $14.99
A landmark album that had one of the best versions of the Jazz Messengers taking a big step forward – thanks to some increased songwriting by the group's young tenor genius – Wayne Shorter! Shorter's tunes take up all of the second half of the record, and all of them have gone onto become classics – "Giantis", "Sleeping Dancer Sleep On", and "Noise In The Attic" – all tunes that hint at the modernism that was to come in Wayne's music, and which especially seem to push his tenor and the trumpet of Lee Morgan into the range of more mature colors and tones that would grace their music as the 60s moved on. Meanwhile, there's a rock-solid rhythm drive at the core – Art Blakey on drums, Jymie Merritt on bass, and the great Bobby Timmons on piano – still making a strong contribution to the group. Lee Morgan wrote the nine minute tune "Johnny's Blue" on side one – which also includes a beautiful version of "Like Someone In Love" – a masterpiece in soulful lyricism! CD features one bonus alternate track, too! CD

Damn amazing work from Charles Bradley – an instant soul classic for all generations, as you'll hear from the very first note! Not only are Bradley's vocals incredible – the kind of once-in-a-long-time approach he brought to his debut – but the backings and production are completely sublime too – magical music from the Menahan Street Band, who sound here like some lost combo from 60s Memphis, but without any of the hoke that reference might imply – instead that really unique approach that you'd only find on one of your few favorite vintage soul albums – maybe Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, or Jesse James on his 60s album for 20th Century! Yet the sound here isn't just vintage for vintage sake, either – as there's an intensity that's very present, contemporary, and urgent – a sound that doesn't die – and which just gets better and better with each new listen. Tremendous stuff – even from the Daptone universe we've been loving for years and years – with titles that include "Strictly Reserved For You", "You Put The Flame On It", "Dusty Blue", "Love Bug Blues", "Hurricane", "Through The Storm", "Confusion", and "Where Do We Go From Here". Inge's always pretty darn great, but the quality of these sides is superb – and there's a definite commitment to top-shelf jazz work throughout, on sessions that were recorded between 1960 and 1971, and which are collected here on CD for the first time ever! The set features a really nice range of material – and even features a few originals composed by other MPS legends – including Peter Herbholzheimer and Wolfgang Dauner. A brilliant return to form for reedman Alan Braufman – a musician who gave one world one great record during the loft jazz years of the 70s, but has only reemerged in recent years as a leader – one with a sense of fire that hasn't dimmed at all over the years! Here, Braufman really revisits that older territory – playing free jazz, but maybe with a bit more structure – as if modal elements might inform the improvisation in the group, giving everything a strong pulse that may well make the set Braufman's greatest album so far! The leader blows alto and flute, in a lineup that features tremendous tenor from James Brandon Lewis, plus beautiful vibes from Patricia Brennan, bass from Ken Filiano, drums from Chad Taylor, and percussion from Michael Wimberly – who gives the bottom an early kick that's greatly appreciated. International Anthem, 2023. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A sublime blend of jazz and organic sounds from multi-instrumentalist Bex Burch – a record that sounds as if it might have come from the studio of Carlos Nino, but which almost has a more personal, poetic sort of quality! There are some sounds of nature here – including bird calls from a sanctuary in Illinois – and even the more familiar instruments, like piano, drums, reeds, violin, or bass are often mixed with some "room" elements that really locate the recording in a special place – in ways that also seem to have some of that post-studio touches around the edges that we love from the International Anthem label. Burch clearly delivers most of the sound herself, almost doing an "in residence" to create the music – but she gets help along the way from guests who include Ben LaMar Gay, Dan Bitney, Rob Frye, Anna Butterss, and Macie Stewart – on titles that include "When Love Begins", "Don't Go Back To Sleep", "Dawn Blessings", "Follow Me I Make You Happy", "Start Before You're Ready", "Pardieu", and "If I Was You I'd Be Doing Exactly The Same". The great Harvey Fuqua produced, and the grooves have this midtempo clubby vibe that's totally great – that special warmth that always set Fantasy tracks apart from some of the more driving disco hits of the time – a vibe that's perfect for Cameron's vocals, which are maybe even better here in the lead as a solo act than with a group! Only one track was issued at the time, on a UK single – "If I Love You", which is features here in both vocal and instrumental versions – next to two other tracks that see the light of day here for the first time – "Thank You Baby" and "Live For Love". 12-inch, Vinyl record

A tremendous solo act from GC Cameron – a singer who first rose to fame in The Spinners, but who really sounds wonderful on his own! GC's moved away from The Spinners here – into a wide range of styles that show him ready to take on most of the rest of the competition! He's working here with the best of the best of Motown – production from Stevie Wonder and Willie Hutch – and arrangements by both, plus Paul Riser, Gene Page, James Carmichael, and Frank Wilson – all of whom really give their best to the record, and show that Motown was putting plenty of effort into making GC one of the next big stars of the 70s. We're not sure why things never took off as strongly for Cameron, but whatever the case, the album's a great step for the solo artist – on cuts that include "If You Don't Love Me", "Tippin", "All In Love Is Fair", "If You're Ever Gonna Love Me", "Come Get This Thang", "I'm Gonna Give You Respect", and "Let Me Down Easy". There's a rich, vibrant feel to the record – a quality that strikes us stronger than any other Cary recording we've heard in recent years, even though Marc's on his own here – really reaching out on the keys of the piano, with a command we never would have expected – stretching over space and tone with a sort of majesty to rival Mal Waldron or McCoy Tyner – yet also keeping things deeply personal as well. Titles include "Melancholia", "Down Here Below", "Music Is The Magic", "Love Evolves", "Down Here Below The Horizon", "Transmute", "Throw It Away", and "Who Used To Dance". CD

Rita Marley Music/P-Vine (Japan), 1982. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
A really fantastic record, and one with a very unusual pedigree – as it was originally produced by Rita Marley, who issued the whole thing on her own label – even though the set is way more 70s soul than reggae in style! The group are tremendous, and have this way of mixing fantastic vocal interplay with these jazzy changes in the instrumentation – clearly inspired by the best Earth Wind & Fire work of the mid 70s, but taken into leaner territory too – yet all without losing any of the warmth you'd get from a larger group too! The set is right up there with the best modern soul of the time – and is ripe for rediscovery, with titles that include "Missing You", "Don't Play With Sparks", "Let's Hold On", "They'll Never Let My Heart Stop", "All Out Of Breath", "Hands Off", "I Want You Here With Me", and "A Song For The Children". Tina CharlesTina Charles – The CBS Years 1975 to 1980 (I Love To Love/Dance Little Lady/Heart N Soul/Just One Smile) ... CD
Cherry Pop (UK), Late 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Four classic albums from UK singer Tina Charles – an artist who mixes older vocal touches with the swirling sounds of the legendary Biddu – in a groove that's got a heck of a lot to offer! Tina never was one of the most underground singers of her generation – but it's her confidence in that fact that makes this music so great – an unabashed love of the poppier sounds of the dancefloor, in a way that beautifully mixes together 70s AM sensibilities with the growing sounds of the disco movement. Biddu's a great choice for the project – as the use of light strings and disco grooves resonates with his own solo work, but also maybe has more of a crossover focus, thanks to Tina's poppy vocals in the lead! The 2CD set features the full albums I Love To Love, Dance Little Lady, Heart N Soul, and Just One Smile – with a total of 40 tracks in all. CD

✨✧ Stanley ClarkeJourney To Love ... LP
Columbia, 1975. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Stanley Clarke may be on a journey to love – but that doesn't mean that the album's too sweet or romantic! Many tracks here still have the harder edge and sharper lines you'd expect from Clarke's key 70s fusion reputation – the kind of rock-influenced styles that crossed over big at the time to huge new audiences – and which made Stan way more than just another electric jazz musician. Some moments feature a large array of backup players, but others are quite spacious, and almost contemplative – filled with those new notes Clarke was getting out of his instrument at the time! Titles include "Silly Putty", "Journey To Love", "Hello Jeff", "Song To John", and "Concerto For Jazz/Rock Orchestra". LP, Vinyl record album

Daniel ClowesMister Wonderful – A Love Story (hardcover) ... Book
Pantheon Books, 2011. New Copy ... $5.99 19.98
One of the most heartbreaking stories we've ever read from Daniel Clowes – penned with a sense of pathos we never would have expected during his Ghost World years! The book has a great format – long sideways, like a newspaper comic strip – and Clowes' pages alternate between panel narratives and rectangular close ups – all delivered in vivid color, and that increasingly tight line he's been using in later years. The whole thing's as striking as the cover – and the book is 78 pages, full color, and hardcover. Book
