Artifact iTi (Bauer/Nilssen Love/Lehn/Vandermark)Artifact iTi – Live In St Johann ... CD
Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
A really unusual assortment of players – coming together here in a way that makes for an equally unusual sort of sound! The meeting of Chicago saxophonist Ken Vandermark and European players is hardly anything new – and drummer Paal Nilssen Love here is a frequent musical partner – but there's some really special sounds coming from both the trombone of Johannes Bauer and the electronics of Thomas Lehn – the last of whom improvises freely, and makes this bristling sort of energy next to the acoustic instruments in the group! The sounds within move between music that has the feel of more familiar free improvisation, and tunes that almost have an electro-acoustic sort of heft – and the album features one long performance, divided up into three parts. Brotzmann/Kondo/Pupillo/Nilssen-LoveHairy Bones ... CD
Okka Disk, 2008. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99
Pretty hairy stuff from Peter Brotzmann and crew – a set that blasts right out of the gate with some really bone-rattling noise! The album's a live set, recorded recently in Amsterdam – featuring Brotzmann on alto, tenor, b flat clarinet, and tarogato – alongside Toshinori Kondo on electric trumpet, Massimo Pupillo on electric bass, and Paal Nilssen Love on drums. The electricity in the instruments can definitely be felt on the title track "Hairy Bones" – a hard-driving tune that runs for over 30 minutes, and which really recalls the energy that Brotzmann had a few decades before, when crossing over big to new audiences around the globe. "Chain Dogs" is even longer, but starts a bit slower – but then really bursts forth with more noisy elements on trumpet and bass – some really speaker-rattling stuff! CD

✨✧ LoveForever Changes (expanded & remastered) ... CD
Elektra/Rhino, 1967. Used ... $5.99
What can we say? This is one of the greatest albums of all time – and it's made even better through the addition of a bunch of previously unissued tracks! The record's got a sound that's completely unique – as crack LA garage punk rock meets Hollywood baroque production, and the result is an amazing bit of loud guitar noise backed by strings and horns, all graced by the godlike vocals of the great Arthur Lee. Forever Changes is a milestone in rock – an incredibly bleak document about insanity, escape, and the coming revolution that never happened. Think of all the best moments of Wild In The Streets, Zabriske Point, and Invocation of My Demon Brother rolled into one – and you'll only have a tiny slice of the picture! A record that will haunt us until the day we die – filled with incredible songs like "Alone Again Or", "Old Man", "Daily Planet", "Red Telephone", and "Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark & Hilldale". CD version also includes "Hummingbirds (demo)", "Laughing Stock", "Wonder People (I Do Wonder) (outtake)", "Your Mind & We Belong Together", and alternate mixes of tracks on the LP. CD

LoveLove ... LP
Elektra, 1966. Very Good ... $49.99
Love's first album – a seminal bit of Sunset Strip rock, and every bit as powerful today as it was in the 60s! The style's a bit sharper-edged than the group's classic and more familiar Forever Changes set, but it's still pretty darn great – a completely fresh batch of guitar-heavy tunes that bristle with a sound that's a lot more sinister than some of the group's contemporaries. There's a few folksy or bluesy elements in the mix, but they're almost used in a way that parodies bigger acts of the time – turning the familiar into the freaky, all with a sense of power that's simply mindblowing. Titles include the group's excellent version of Burt Bacharach's "My Little Red Book", plus "Hey Joe", "Emotions", "A Message To Pretty", "Mushroom Clouds", "And More", and "Coloured Balls Falling". LP, Vinyl record album
(Gold label stereo pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear, some light sticker spots on front, and is lightly bent at the top left corner.)

Blue Thumb, Early 70s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $59.99
A strange album when put next to Love's Elektra records – and one that's not without its weaknesses – but the band's got a kick-ass drummer, and the record's filled with more than a few tasty moments that have a bit of funk in them. Layered with Arthur Lee's hip guitar, the sound is great – and the record's still a great one if you like the band. Tracks include "Doggone", "Instra-mental", "Gather Round", "Run To the Top", "Abalony", "Signed DC", "Stand Out", and "Love Is More Than Words or Better Late Than Never". LP, Vinyl record album

Nana LoveDisco Documentary – Full Of Funk ... CD
Nestor/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 16.99
Rare funky soul from Ghanaian disco diva Nana Love – the rare, appropriately-titled Full Of Funk record from 1979 – with dynamite vocals by Nana and featuring Ghana legend Harry Mosco and other incredible players in the studio band! Nana's voice is uniquely amazing – with a sweet, girlish tone that builds to a lioness roar on occasion – which is incredibly compelling – and sung entirely in English. The band provides a wicked backdrop of funky dancefloor soul – propelled by fantastic guitarwork by Mosco, Paul Pryce and Les Forrest, killer basslines by Grek Haywood, sax and flute by Humphrey Okoh, percussion by Ayindi, drums by Tony Martin, synth and clavinet by Adrian Bennett and piano by Richard Reid. This great version from BBE includes 5 bonus tracks not on the original release – and the titles include "I'm in Love", "Whe Gonna Stay For The Party", "Talking About Music", "Disco Lover", "When The Heart Decides", "Reach Out My Hand", "Hang On Baby", "Loving Feeling (Dance Mix)" and "Loving Feeling (Instrumental)". Preston LovePreston Love's Omaha Bar-B-Q (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Kent/BGP (UK), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A funky party all the way through – and the one and only album we've ever seen from Johnny Otis main tenor player in the 60s! The set's got a vibe that's much funkier than some of Johnny's own records of previous years – and really shows that looser, more open style he was bringing to his ensemble at the time – and in addition to Preston's tenor, the set's also got work by a young Shuggie Otis – who's really wailing with some trippy licks on guitar! The overall feel is very much in the funky 45 mode – and most cuts are instrumentals, occasionally with a bluesy twist – and one number – "Cool Ade" – has a hip call-response vocal that's mighty nice! Other titles are equally sweet – and include "Hoe Cakes & Sorghum", "Cream Dream", "Neck Bones", "Chili Mac", and "Pot Likker". LP, Vinyl record album

The second album from Love & Rockets – and the biggest step away from the heavy goth moodiness of Bauhaus to date – but it's still got a distinctive, nocturnal vibe, even if the melodies have some poppier strains. The mix of dissonant touches with straight forward melodies and catchy songs is unique to this day. Way up there with the best Love & Rockets records ever. Love SculptureForms & Feelings ... CD
EMI (UK), 1969. Used ... $9.99
Wonderful work from Love Sculpture – a heavy British trio from the end of the 60s – and one that features a young Dave Edmunds on guitar! There's a slight bluesy undercurrent in Dave's style, but the music also has that tightly compressed sound that would emerge more strongly during his hit solo years – yet which is presented here with some very nice rough edges. Songwriting is especially great – a fresh approach to territory that was beginning to sound a bit stale in the hands of some of the group's contemporaries – presented here with a clean, lean sound that's almost a precursor to power pop at points, yet which still has a heavier late 60s rock feel. Titles include "In The Land Of The Few", "Seagull", "People People", "Mars", "Sabre Dance", "Farandole", and "You Can't Catch Me". CD

20th Century, 1976. Very Good ... $6.99
A wonderful album by Barry White – a bit later than some of the early 70s hits, but one of his most satisfying records overall! The perpetual favorite on the album is the great groover "Strange Games & Things", a slow sly funky track that's been sampled often over the years, and which is a perfect summation of the mix of heavy drums and orchestra that made Barry's records so great. The album's also got a lot of other very nice groovers, most of which have a more uptempo sound than "Strange Games", but all of which are very nice. Titles include "Brazilian Love Song", "My Sweet Summer Suite", and "You, I Adore". LP, Vinyl record album

Love, Peace, & HappinessHere 'Tis ... CD
RCA/P&C, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
A tremendous little record from Love Peace & Happiness – a great vocal trio from the early 70s, and one who really shine with this overlooked gem for RCA! The trio were part of the New Birth/Nite Liters universe that producer Harvey Fuqua brought to the label at the time – and they've got a hip sound that's right up there with the other two groups – with whom they were very intimately involved – working here with arrangements from Fuqua that are almost his contribution to post-Motown sounds in the 70s, the way that Holland-Dozier-Holland were working at Invictus. Ann Bogan really soars with righteous leads in the group – and gets equal support from brothers Leslie and Melvin Wilson – who really help underscore some of the bolder elements of the music – especially on the funkier cuts. Titles include "I Don't Want To Do Wrong", "Lonesome Lonely & Alone", "Don't Knock My Love", "If I Owned The World", "You Can't Cheat the Cheater", "Stay", "Mind", and "You've Chosen Me". Great reissue – with excellent sound and very detailed notes! CD

Barry White & Love Unlimited OrchestraTogether Brothers – Original Soundtrack ... CD
20th Century/Elemental (France), 1974. New Copy ... $12.99
A stunner of a soundtrack from the maestro Barry White – his only entry into the blacksploitation film genre of the 70s, and a complete doozy throughout! For the album, Barry's stripped down the bigger space of his own records, and his Love Unlimited productions – into some shorter tracks that really focus on that blend of funk and strings that he could do so well – making for a batch of killer instrumentals that really offer up a special Barry White take on the funky film sound of the 70s! Love Unlimited also sing on two tracks – "Somebody Is Gonna Off The Man" and "People Of Tomorrow Are The Children Of Today _- but most of the record is instrumental, played by the Orchestra – and tracks include "Killer's Lullaby", "So Nice To Hear", "Killer Don't Do It", "Can't Seem To Find Him", "Alive & Well", "Theme From Together Brothers", "Do Drop In", and "Here Comes The Man". ✨✧ Tim Love LeeAgainst Nature – Electronic Tone-scapes Featuring Members Of The New York Aquarian Men's Drum Workshop ... CD
Tummy Touch (UK), 2005. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest records we've ever heard from Tim Love Lee – and one of the most experimental too! The album's exactly as promised on the title – a set of electronic tonescapes, done with a spare, rhythmic quality that's really compelling – almost like work from the classic Test Card EP by Young Marble Giants, but a bit more sharp-edged and dark-toned overall! There's a great vintage analogue quality to these tracks – and the music lies somewhere in a space between late 60s avant-classical experiments and some of the indie electronics of the British scene in the early 80s post-punk years. Titles include "Spoonfulls Of Physic", "Rejoice Beyond The Bounds Of Time", "The Tortoise", "The World May Shudder At My Joy", "The Mouth Organ", "Ancient Hope", "Amide The Universal Dissolution", "Miss Urania", and "Crickets Sing At The Chateau De Lourps". Casablanca, 1977. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of many projects headed up by Alec Costandinos – a briefly successful producer/arranger during the late 70s, with a real penchant for overly complicated disco! Given the huge amount of instruments in this project (strings, brass, percussion, guitar, and lots more), Costandinos must have blown all of the cocaine-fueled budget amassed by Casablanca at the time – but who was bothering to keep tabs, as everyone was probably too busy watching the sexy lady on the cover getting her shirt ripped off! Fortunately, the great Alan Hawkshaw (of The Mohawks and Serge Gainsbourg fame) is on keyboards, and his work on the keys provides a few bright moments amidst all the fluff. Two long tracks – each a side apiece – "I've Found Love" and "Accidental Lover". A great one for DJs to put on when they have to skip out, use the toilet, get a coffee, do their laundry, balance the checkbook, go home and make the bed, etc. . . LP, Vinyl record album

20th Century, 1979. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An album of theirs that you don't see that often – with Barry White's takes on popular movie hits. Some of this veers a little to close to the cheesy side of things, but it's worth it for the "Theme From King Kong" alone, an uptempo funk number that has a great almost afro-funk guitar, way up front in the mix. There's also a great take on the theme from Shaft, and "People of Tomorrow Are the Children of Today" from the Together Brothers soundtrack. LP, Vinyl record album

MPS, 1974. Very Good+ ... $18.99
One of those wonderful Monty Alexander albums from the 70s – recorded for the MPS label, and with a very different vibe than some of his later albums in the US! There's a warmth, flow, and soul here that comes through instantly – a way of fitting the piano right in with the rhythms, so that the tunes have this gentle glow and inherent warmth that really makes them sparkle! Part of the energy comes from the rhythm section – a trio that features Ernest Ranglin on guitar, Eberhard Weber on bass, and Kenny Clare on drums – and Weber's bass work is especially good, and there's lots of nice round funky moments in some of the best tracks. Titles include "Feel Like Making Love", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", and "SKJ". LP, Vinyl record album

A great little batch of jazzy soul by Vince Andrews – a vocalist and sax player from Columbus, Ohio – which is where he recorded this obscure early 80s set, a record with a vibe that's maybe more 70s overall! The record has a great little groove – kind of that Charles Earland stepping vibe that we love on his late 70s Muse recordings – supported by some sweet organ work from Bobby Floyd, a player we don't know at all, but who really shines here! Most of the cuts just feature a trio – with Matt Wagner on drums, and Vince on alto, tenor, soprano sax, and flute – working through mostly original material that includes "Love Oh Love", "Akila", "The One Who Needs You", "Being With You", and "Vibrating With Vince". Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
Three full albums from Atlantic Starr – with lots of bonus tracks too! All In The Name Of Love has Atlantic Star at the height of their catchy commercial fame – bouncing along with rhythms that crossover nicely to the mainstream, yet still keep a bit of their previous funky edge intact! The groove here is almost in the style that Atlantic Starr inspired in so many other younger groups in the earlier part of the 80s – although it's also a bit more polished too. Most instrumentation is electric, and tunes are mostly written by the team of David and Wayne Lewis – both of whom sing on the record. Barbara Weathers also handles female vocals, and titles include "Once Lover At A Time", "Let The Sun In", "My Mistake", "I'm In Love", "Always", "Don't Take Me For Granted", and a version of Sam Dees' "All In The Name Of Love". We're Moving Up is one of the last in a long run of 80s hits from Atlantic Starr – a group who were already moving up the soul charts before the release of the album! The set continues their move into commercial territory started a few records before, but it also shakes loose of some of the colder sounds of 80s soul – and picks up a somewhat warmer vibe on the keyboards and rhythms. Porscha Martin sings female vocals with the group, and titles include "Under Your Spell", "Love Ain't Fair", "Woman's Touch", "We're Movin Up", "My Sugar", "You Deserve The Best", and "Don't Start The Fire". Love Crazy is a set that's got a nice change in groove from Atlantic Starr – a sound that's still got a lot of their best elements intact, but which also seems to bring on some of the best elements that were being introduced by the British scene too! Rhythms at points are maybe more in the Soul II Soul or Lisa Stansfield modes – which makes for some great tunes that really reinvigorate the group and update them for a new jack generation, while still holding onto the charms of the past. A few moments get more in a mellow quiet storm sound – all with the balance that made earlier Atlantic Starr albums classics – on titles that include "Love Crazy", "Hold On", "Masterpiece", "Girl Your Love's So Fine", "I Can't Wait", "If You Knew What's Good For You", and "Come Lover". 3CD package features all albums in tiny LP-styled jackets – with bonus tracks that include "One Lover At A Time (ext)", "Always (edit)", "Let The Sun Shine IN (ext rmx)", "All In The Name Of Love (single)", "My First Love (ext)", "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth ext mix)", "My First Love (7" edit)", and "Bring It Back Home Again (Joe Smooth underground mix)". There's a few tinnier keyboards here than a decade ago, but there's plenty of great mellow moments too – and overall, Austin's still quite far from some of the too-commercial soul of contemporaries who were trying to cash in on her act. Dave Grusin produced, and titles include "In My Life", "Too Soon To Know", "Through The Test Of Time", "Good In Love", "Wait For Me", "First Time Love", and "In My Dream". A sweet little groover – lifted from the soundtrack to Brown Sugar! ✨✧ Philip BaileyLove Will Find A Way ... CD
Verve, 2019. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Philip Bailey's looking hipper than usual on the cover – and he's sounding hipper than usual within – thanks to fantastic production help from Robert Glasper, Christian McBride, and Chick Corea – all artists who play on the record, and help give Bailey a really timeless sense of soul! The man himself needs no introduction – thanks to his long legacy in Earth Wind & Fire, and a range of great solo records too – but there's really something different, and something special taking place here – as Bailey pushes both his vocal range and sense of songform, working through music by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Oscar Brown Jr, and even the Talking Heads – while also turning in some great songs of his own, co-penned with some of the album's collaborators. The instrumentation is served up by a dream group of jazz talents – Kamasi Washington on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, Robert Glasper and Chick Corea on keyboards, Steve Wilson on saxes and flute, Lionel Loueke on guitar, and Christian McBride on bass – and although the record features guest vocals from Bilal and Casey Benjamin, it's Bailey's work that's the real main attraction. Titles include "We're A Winner", "Stairway To The Stars", "Just To Keep Your Satisfied", "Once In A Lifetime", "Billy Jack", "You're Everything", "Brooklyn Blues", "Sacred Sounds", and "Love Will Find A Way". The only album ever by The Barrino Brothers – a stellar early 70s harmony group, and one who could sing with the best of the east coast scene of the time! The whole set's got a feel that's very much in the best mode of groups like The Modulations, Soul Generation, and even The O'Jays – as the group's got a deeper, more solid sound than some of the more fragile outfits of their era. Production is very strong – thanks to the Holland-Dozier-Holland powerhouse sound of the time – and the group's vocals are supported on a full groove that really helps send the whole thing over the top! The title cut "Livin High Off The Goodness Of Your Love" is a stone classic – and other nice tracks include "Rain", "I Had it All", and "It Doesn't Have to Be That Way". LP, Vinyl record album

The balance is great, and the record's the sort that makes us appreciate Beirach even more than before – a great reminder of his talents, on tracks that include "Night & Day", "Goodbye", "Autumn Leaves", "On Green Dolphin Street", "What Is This Thing Called Love", and "Nardis". Warner/Wounded Bird, 1993. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
Sweet stepping soul from George Benson – a batch of tracks that wraps up his wonderful vocals and guitar with some great contemporary rhythms! The vibe here is nicely laidback – never too smooth, nor some of the more commercial territory that Benson was trying for a decade before – and in a way, it's almost as if George has been digging some of the less mainstream soul sounds of the time, as he's hitting a sound that would certainly appeal to steppers in Chicago, or the indie soul and smooth jazz scene of the early 90s. Benson's got a great way of scatting lightly with his guitar, and there's a leanness to most of the tracks, despite a relatively full lineup of players. Titles include "I'll Be Good To You", "Got To Be There", "My Heart Is Dancing", "Love Remembers", "Come Into My World", "Somewhere Island", "Calling You", "Lovin On Borrowed Time", and "Love Of My Life". Disco grooves, but with a definite difference – given that Jo Bisso had previously worked on the Parisian club scene, and brings a special flourish to this American album from the late 70s! Jo sings lead vocals on the side-long "Love Somebody" – a tune that builds strongly as Bisso gets answered by a trio of lovely ladies who really brighten up the sound – and who then seem to take over even more on the flipside working with singer Claudia Ferrari. This second side is even better than the first – as things get a bit more spare and stripped-down – snaking out on the smooth stepper "Your Love", getting some funky moogy touches on the P&P-like "Let's Keep It Together", and warming up on the mellow disco number "Thank You Baby". Special bonus – CD features a fifth track – not titled or credited at all! CD

A seminal album from Dee Dee Bridgewater – a set that carries forward some of the soul styles she had at the start of the 80s, but one that also points the way towards her return to jazz in the 90s as well! The production is fairly electric – lots of keyboards and guitars, and mostly beats in the rhythms – and most tunes are laidback, pushing Dee Dee into the kind of sophistic-soul/jazz diva territory shared by contemporaries like Phyllis Hyman or Marlena Shaw at the same point in their careers. Although young, Brighter Side managed to bring a depth to their work that was way more than kiddie soul – a heartfelt, heartbreaking quality that was all adult, no matter how youthful the themes – and their vocals are a perfect contrast to the fuller arrangements from producers Clarence Johnson and Johnny Cameron. The set contains the group's classic "Love Jones", still one of the best fragile harmony tracks of the early 70s – plus loads of other great numbers like "I Owe You Love", "I'm A Loser", "Just A Little Bit", and a superb remake of "Summer Ride". Brilliant work from this long-lost Barry White protege! Tom Brock was one of the leading lights in Barry's stable of sweet mid 70s soul talents – a great writer who contributed songs to the legendary Gloria Scott album, and a heck of a great mellow soul singer on his own – with a style that's right up there with work by Leon Ware, Leroy Hutson, and some of our favorite 70s soul heroes! This album's the only one that Brock ever recorded – a great blend of mellow soul tunes, ballads, and a few tracks that have a nicely kicking Barry White-styled funk sound to them. White produced and arranged with Gene Page – and the whole album's great – the kind of mellow soul treasure you'll play again and again and again over the years! Includes the massive "I Love You More & More", plus "There's Nothing In This World That Can Stop Me From Loving You", "Shake Me Wake Me", "Naked As The Day I Was Born", "If We Don't Make It, Nobody Can", "Have a Nice Weekend Baby", and "The Love We Share". One of the most beautiful albums ever recorded by saxophone genius Peter Brotzmann – and maybe his first album of ballad material too! As the title implies, the work is Brotzmann's answer to the poetry of Kenneth Patchen – and there's certainly a poetic quality to the way that Peter lays down his improvised performances – at a level that's subtle, sensitive, and which really seems to be opening up the way for a whole new generation of free jazz expression on the European scene – much as the Brotzmann recordings of the late 60s opened a path for the first! Every track features a different reed instrument – and apart from a reading of Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman", all the other tracks are originals by Brotzmann – played on a tenor sax mouthpiece, tarogato, bass clarinet, alto, baritone, e flat clarinet, and tenor. The whole album's a real treasure – very fresh and original, and a little bit funky at times too – almost with a Ruby Andrews vibe. Edsel (UK), 1980s. New Copy 7CD ... $59.99 65.99
A huge batch of work from Change – all the group's classic albums from the 80s, plus some great work from later years too – all with bonus tracks added to most of the records! First up is Glow Of Love – the classic debut from Change – and the start of an amazing run of groovers in the early 80s! The set's got a tight, jazzy feel throughout – a stripped-down approach to disco modes, with the same focus on the basslines that you'd find in work by Chic – but a style that's almost even more instrumentally focused overall, given the great range of studio players who worked on the set. Yet there's also some key vocal moments, too – work by Luther Vandross that really helps make some of the best tracks sparkle, and which went onto catapult Vandross into a rich solo career on his own. Next is Miracles – a brilliant second set from Change – working here without Luther Vandross on lead vocals, but hardly missing a beat at all! As before, the basslines are at the core of the set – a sweet stripped-down approach that brings even more focus onto the bottom of the groove for early 80s dancefloors – with loads of numbers that step along in a really groovy mode – one quite far from the cliches of disco, and inflected by loads of jazzy elements that keep things fresh over the years! Vocals are by James Robinson – previously with Lonnie Liston Smith – Diva Gray, and Jocelyn Shaw. Sharing Your Love is sweet modern soul from this great group – one of the brightest points in major label soul during the early 80s! Change, ironically, is a group that went through a number of line-up changes, even in their prime – with the tight, clubby, yet genuinely soulful production a constant. This record is made all the better for the beautifully soulful dual lead vocals of James Robinson and Deborah Cooper. The tracks have deeply layered live instrumentation – keyboards, guitar, percussion, horns and strings – blended seamlessly with early 80s production touches. This Is Your Love is an overlooked set from Change – a record that possibly wasn't as hit-worthy as some of their previous efforts – yet one that still had the group very much at the top of their game! By this point, Change had really evolved past being just a studio project, into a rock-solid soul group with a definite ear for a groove – particularly the tight, lean sort of rhythms that percolated in the post-Chic era – making a perfect fit for the slightly jazzy production of the record. Bassbits and beats drive most of the rhythms, but there's still a nice degree of warmth – and vocals are handled by Deborah Cooper, James Robinson, Rick Brennan, and Timmy Allen – who each seem to get their moment in the spotlight, furthering the well-rounded sound of the record. Next is Change Of Heart – a game-changing album from Change – a real breakthrough for the early 80s international soul combo! Change Of Heart has some great production by Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis – and on top of that, it's perhaps the best set of songs the group had recorded to to date. Jam/Lewis wrote half the tunes and produced most of the album, which is front-loaded with some of the best of them. Turn On Your Radio is not nearly as well-known as their first few hits, but still in that all-solid approach to the groove that was the Change trademark during the early 80s! The sound is a bit more stripped down than before – tight beats and keyboards, mostly in a mellow to midtempo mode – all topped with vocals from male and female members of the group! Change still have a great way with a hook here – an approach to soul that's tight and professional, yet not nearly as cloying as some of the chart-climbing acts of their generation. And as before, the keyboards are almost as great as the vocals – with slight jazzy inflections that warm up the tunes nicely! Last up is Love 4 Love – a 2018 comeback for Change – still sounding great all these many years later, but in a slightly different way! The balance between all elements here is fantastic – as the music has all the best parts of the group's earlier music, but also updates the sound a bit – in the way that a combo like Incognito or Brand New Heavies were updating older soul music back in the 90s, by grabbing all the strongest parts of the past, and fusing them into a fresh lean groove. The songs are upbeat, positive, and full of the kind of catchy hooks that Change always did so well! Box set features 78 tracks in all – with bonus tracks added to most albums! CD

Tina CharlesI Love To Love (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
CBS/RPM (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $12.99
A great expanded version of this classic from Tina Charles – one that brings in 8 more bonus tracks from her pre-disco years! These tunes are really wonderful – titles that show a style of female pop that still has the soul-influenced quality that was picked up by the British scene in the late 60s, but which pushes that groove with a bit more polish – serving up class and confidence in a single breath, but still having enough of a soul quality to appeal to our ears. Added to these bonus tracks is the main album – I Love To Love – a record that mixes older vocal touches with the swirling sounds of the legendary Biddu – in a groove that's got a heck of a lot to offer! Tina never was one of the most underground singers of her generation – but it's her confidence in that fact that makes this music so great – an unabashed love of the poppier sounds of the dancefloor, in a way that beautifully mixes together 70s AM sensibilities with the growing sounds of the disco movement. Biddu's a great choice for the project – and while the music isn't as exotic as some of his own albums, it's still got some great instrumental flair! Titles include "Love Me Like A Lover", "I Love To Love", "Hold Me", "Hey Boy", "Why", and "Disco Fever". Bonus tracks are from 1969 to 1973 – and include "Rich Girl", "In The Middle Of The Day", "Good To Be Alive", "Same Old Story", "Band Of Gold", and "You Can Do Magic". CD

✨✧ COB (Clive's Original Band)Spirit Of Love ... CD
CBS/Bread & Wine, 1972. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A beautiful little record from the glory days of the acid folk scene in the UK – a set served up by Clive Palmer, who you might know from work in Incredible String Band and Wizz Jones – sounding even more enigmatic here at the helm of a trio who were produced by the legendary Ralph McTell! The style is light years from the more traditional sounds of some of Ralph's music – very moody and dark, with instrumentation that comes from guitar, recorder, and a variety of other instruments – including the unusual dulcitar, which was invented by trio member John Bidwell! Lead vocals are from Clive and Mick Bennett – alternating on different tracks, and harmonizing with a very eerie vibe, one that's further expanded by the unusual production modes too. A few tracks add in other elements, but just lightly – really keeping the solitary, spooky vibe of the record intact. Titles include "Evening Air", "Serpent's Kiss", "Wade In The Water", "Soft Touches Of Love", "Music Of The Ages", Spirit Of Love", and "Sweet Slavery". CD

Al Cohn & Jimmy RowlesHeavy Love (with bonus track) ... CD
Xanadu, 1977. Used ... $8.99
Lots of heavy love here – a wonderful sense of rapport between the great tenorist Al Cohn and piano genius Jimmy Rowles! Both musicians were still recording heavily at the time of this album, but the record seems to capture them in a really special space that still stands strongly on its own – a mode that's much more relaxes than some of the Pablo Records sessions of the time, and which has Cohn in an especially striking mode – really hitting these openly-blown, often-angular lines that are dripping with soul – more heart and feeling than we might normally expect from him, matched equally by Jimmy Rowles' wonderful phrasing on piano – very much here at the top shelf level he delivered with Stan Getz on The Peacocks album. Titles include "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", "Bar Talk", "These Foolish Things", "Them There Eyes", and "Sweet & Lovely". Features the bonus track "For All We Know". CD

Albert CollinsLove Can Be Found Anywhere (Even In A Guitar) ... LP
Imperial, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Damn great work from Albert Collins – one of those hard-edged gems from the early days that's a lot more funk than his later blues! Sure, there's still plenty of blues here – but the rhythms are pretty funky too, and the album's got some great raw production from Bill Hall – free from any of the blues cliches that were creeping into other artists work from mainstream attention – and still cooked up with a really gritty edge overall! Titles include the funky monsters "Doin My Thing" and "Do The Sissy" – plus "Collins Mix", "Trunin On", "Stump Poker", "Let's Get It Together Again", and "Left Overs". LP, Vinyl record album
