An essential 2LP set that's just about the only vinyl release you can find that documents the work of the legendary (and short-lived) Circle group – an important avant jazz combo that featured Anthony Braxton, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and Barry Altschul. The record captures a Parisian concert from 1971, and the band runs through a great reading of Wayne Shorter's "Nefertitti", plus original material like "Duet", "Toy Room – Q&A", "Song For The Newborn", and "Lookout Farm". The whole thing has a vibe that's very different than other work from Frissell – and two larger ensembles provide the backings for arrangements crafted by Gibbs – sublime sonic energy on titles that include "Sweet Rain", "Electricity", "Nocturne Volgaire", "We Shall Overcome", "Monica Jane", and "Lookout For Hope". A wonderful little record from the 70s – not nearly the cosmic set you might imagine from the title, and instead a warmly-produced album that's in the best 70s smooth mellow style! These guys would fit nicely in a collection next to Crosby Stills & Nash or America – as they've got a strong sense of harmony in their vocal approach – one that's schooled in the SoCal generation of the 60s, but taken to a whole new 70s territory in the studio – and supported by instrumentation that has some occasional jazz inflections which further warms the whole thing up! The group mix a bit of flute in with the keyboards, which seems to resonate almost as another voice – and although the guitar gets a bit stronger on a few numbers, it's usually more in the background to let the vocals rise up front. Brilliant work from a Long Island group who are really known for just one famous single, but who also managed to cut a few other tracks at the time – all brought together here to make a long-overdue album for the group! "Valley Of Death" is the group's sole single – a great garage reworking of the poem "The Charge Of The Light Brigade", taken into really sinister territory – issued under the name of The Whatever, although the group also existed as The Raincoats and The Lookouts, both of who are featured here – alongside two very cool car dealership songs the group cut for Wolfinger Dodge! Titles include "The Valley Of Death", "More Than Fair", "Conscience", "Stranger", "No More Do I Dream", "You're Mine", "Away From You", and "Talking Out Of Turn" – plus two cool "Wolfinger Dodge" jingles, with surprisingly profane announcements!
