Ballister (Dave Rempis/Fred Lonberg Holm/Paal Nilssen Love)Smash & Grab ... CD
Aerophonic, 2023. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Brilliant work from this well-matched trio of improvisers – a group who definitely smash and grab in a highly sonic way – thanks to cello and electronics from Fred Lonberg-Holm, drums and percussion from Paal Nilssen Love, and alto, tenor, and baritone saxes from the great Dave Rempis! If you know the players in other formats, you'll know what they're capable of – and if you've heard them as Ballister before, you'll know that they really seem to set each other on fire – often working with an intensity that's breathtaking, very much at the level that Paal serves up on some of his own work as a leader. Fred uses the cello in a very different way than most other classical and jazz – and Dave, as always, is incredible with his freeform sense of creativity throughout. Titles include "Smash", "Grab", and "Even More Smashing". CD
Also available Smash & Grab (magenta vinyl pressing) ... LP 19.99

Tom TallistchRide ... CD
Posi-Tone, 2014. Used ... $6.99 8.99
The album's a heck of a great ride with tenorist Tom Tallitsch – a player who's stepped in traditional tones and phrasing, but who can also push things forward with his own personal agenda as well! Tallitsch has a really old school depth to his instrument – a quality that reminds us a bit of Eric Alexander at his best, as does the flowing sense of rhythm the album gets from Art Hirahara on piano, Peter Brendler on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – a rhythm trio that fits together very well and provides a rock-solid and soulful swing on the album's best numbers. Michael Dease blows some tight trombone throughout too, and most tunes are originals – with titles that include "Ride", "Rubbernecker", "Rain", "The Giving Tree", "El Luchador", and "Turtle" – but the album also features two surprising ballad remakes, of David Bowie's "Life On Mars" and Led Zepplin's "Ten Years Gone". ✨✧ Chitinous EnsembleChitinous ... LP
Dream/Cosmic Jazz (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... About May 20, 2024
The name of the group may be obscure, but it's one of the key ensembles who recorded as part of the legendary Deram jazz series at the turn of the 70s – directed by cellist Paul Buckmaster, and featuring trumpet from Ian Carr and soprano sax from Brian Smith! The style here mixes together strings and freer jazz styles – in a tightly scored way that makes for shifting patterns in sound and mood. Overall, there's a quality to the work that always seems to be yearning for the next level – especially on the earlier tracks on the album, which kind of set the stage – and then open up at the final half of the record in some especially groovy numbers that feature Chris Karan on tabla! Other players include Peter Robinson on electric piano, Diana Lewis on acoustic piano, and Barry Morgan on drums – and titles include "Chitinous", "Dance", "Aldebaranian Song", and "Ronkproat'tn". PicnicPicnic ... CD
Data/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1985. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.99
Free jazz, and lots lots more – a lost nugget from an especially creative period in the Dutch scene, headed up by cellist Tristan Honsinger! At some level, the music echoes other improvised work by Honsinger – but at others, it also reflects the criss-crossing of genres and scenes that were taking place during these key years – a point after which free jazz had established itself, post-punk had opened up new waves of expression, too-prog tendencies had settled down, and the higher art world had opened their arms to embrace them all! The songs are both instrumental, and feature occasional vocals from Tiziana Simona Vigni – whose role with the sextet is not unlike some of Irene Aebi's performances with Steve Lacy, although maybe a bit more freewheeling and open-ended – more in a Recommended Records vein – a label that might have been a good home for this set, were it not issued by Data Records. In additional to Honsinger on cello and additional voice, the record also features Toshinori Kondo on trumpet, Jean-Jacques Avenel on bass, Sean Bergin on saxes, and Michael Vatcher on percussion – on titles that include "Quandro Era Estate", "Picnic", "Violets", "Teeth", "Orient Express", "Laly", "Romy", and "After The Rain". CD
(Beautiful package – with a heavy Japanese-style paper sleeve!)

Abdul WadudBy Myself ... LP
Bisharra/Gotta Groove, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 35.99
A haunting set of solo tracks by cellist Abdul Wadud – an important, and oft-overlooked, figure in the 70s loft jazz scene! Wadud plays cello throughout, but in a style that's extremely inventive – and much more in the vein of bass improvisation by players in a tradition that includes Malachi Favors and Barre Phillips, with a bit of a nod to the violin work of Leroy Jenkins – really using the instrument in all these sorts of amazing ways, and totally breaking the role of the cello from that in more compositional music – and firmly establishing it as a tremendous instrument for improvising in jazz! The interplay between the high and low regions of the instrument is especially nice – with a tonal majesty that's breathtaking – and there's also this rhythmic quality to many numbers that's very different than more way-out bass improvisations. The whole thing's fantastic – deeply spiritual throughout – and titles include "In A Breeze", "Happiness", "Oasis", and "Kaleidoscope". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ We JazzIssue #11 – Oni Puladi ... Magazine
WeJazz (Finland), 2024. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A jam-packed issue of this mighty great magazine – one that not only features a big article on Carla Bley, pictured on the cover – but also more on reedman Azar Lawrence, pianist Nduduzo Makhathini, and improvising cellist Abdul Wadud! There's also more on John Zorn's Naked City, Amirtah Kidambi, Ruth Goller, Mette Henriette, and Francois Jeanneau – plus a look at the great spiritual jazz label Gondwana Records, and photos from the We Jazz Festival in 2023! As always, the writing is great, the photos superb, and the large publication is more like a book or journal than a magazine – kind of the Wax Poetics for those who dig jazz! Magazine

✨✧ Brian LynchMaderia Latino – A Latin Jazz Perspective On The Music Of Woody Shaw ... CD
Hollistic Music Works, 2017. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful mixing of modes – a set that blends the compositions of Woody Shaw with driving rhythms from a Latin jazz group – and a very strong frontline that's overflowing with top trumpet talents! In addition to leader Brian Lynch, the set also features performances by Dave Douglas, Josh Evans, Sean Jones, Etienne Charles, and others – working with core sounds from a combo that's heavy on percussion, with piano and bass to round things out. Trumpets criss-cross in a beautiful way – making new rhythmic magic from Woody's classic tunes, and also really stating a strong difference in the solo performances too. Most tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Zoltan", "In A Capricornian Way", "Tomorrow's Destiny", "Sweet Love Of Mine", "Just A Ballad For Woody", "On The New Ark", and "Song Of Songs" – plus Lynch originals "Blues For Woody & Khalid" and "Madera Latino Suite". ✨✧ Dvorak/Bruch/TchaikovskyCello Concerto Op 104/Kol Nidrei Op 47/Variations On A Rococo Theme – Janos Starker/Dorati/London Symphony Orchestra ... CD
Mercury, 1962/1964. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most enigmatic cellists of the 20th Century – heard here on a keynote recording of Dvorak's famous Cello Concerto In B Minor! Janos Starker is one of our all-time favorites on his instrument – a player who can be subtle when needed, but also able to hit the vivid flights of color you might be more likely to hear from a violinist – especially in the company of Antal Dorati, who spurs the London Symphony on with some especially wonderful elements in the woodwinds. Starker hits some darker notes on Bruch's Kol Nidrei – which takes on an especially rich sound here in the hands of Dorati. CD

✨✧ Chico Hamilton with Fred KatzClassical Katz (Zen/Chico Hamilton Quintet) ... CD
Pacific Jazz/Five Four (UK), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
A double-length collection of work from the Chico Hamilton and his famous cellist Fred Katz – two albums from the 50s, back to back on a single CD! First up is Zen, issued under Katz's name for Pacific Jazz – recorded at the time when he was the cello player in Chico Hamilton's groundbreaking late 50s group! The tunes are distinctly more modern than even his work with Chico – and are played by Hamilton-esque players that include Paul Horn or Harry Klee on flute and saxes, Carson Smith on bass, John Pisano on guitar, and Chico himself on drums and tympani. There's some added strings and woodwinds on a number of tracks, and the tunes move between 50s chamber jazz and 50s chamber modern – with titles that include "Montuna", "Katz Up", "Loma", "Pluck It", "Lord Randall", and "Suite For Horn". Next up is the Chico Hamilton Quintet album for Pacific Jazz, a classic from the west coast scene of the 50s – recorded in 1956 at the Forum Theater in Los Angeles – with a lineup that features Hamilton on drums, Paul Horn on alto and tenor sax and clarinet, John Pisano on guitar, Fred Katz on cello and Carson Smith on bass. The work's very much in Hamilton's best sprightly chamber jazz mode – with some great originals that include "Chanel #5", "Mr. Jo Jones", and "Reflections" – plus Hamilton-ized versions of "Satin Doll", "Caravan", "Siete-Cuatro", "I Know", and "Lillian". ✨✧ Fred KatzFolk Songs For Far Out Folk ... LP
Warner, 1958. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A lost chapter in the career of cellist Fred Katz – an album recorded after his small combo work with Chico Hamilton, and sort of a larger group take on the whimsical sound of the classic Hamilton Quintet! The tracks are all older folk tunes, adapted by Katz to fit a chamber jazz mode – and featuring shifting instrumentation from track to track, in order to fit the African, American, or Jewish origins of the tunes. Although the concept may sound a bit gimmicky, the record's actually pretty darn great from a jazz perspective – and is one of the few to show the real depth of Katz as a leader! Players include Billy Bean on guitar, Gene Estes on vibes, Jack Costanzo on percussion, Pete Candoli on trumpet, and Paul Horn on flute and alto – all great talents for this sort of work, especially Horn, whose reed lines help keep things lively. Titles include "Mate'ka", "Chili'lo", "Mathni-ki", "Old Paint", "Foggy Foggy Dew", and "Rav's Nigun". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nick Mazzarella & Tomeka ReidSignaling ... CD
Nessa, 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
Completely sublime duets between alto saxophonist Nick Mazzarella and cellist Tomeka Reid – working here together at a level that seems to both bring a whole new sense of energy to duo improvisation, and also put the record at the level of some of the most exciting work of the 70s! The strength here is the tunefulness that both players maintain at most moments – whether it's Mazzarella crafting these rich, soulful lines that feel more like tenor expressions than alto – or Reid working her instrument more like an acoustic bass, again with a depth that seems beyond the instrument's usual scope of expression. There's definitely some free moments throughout, but there's also an adhesion to warmth at the core – on titles that include "Invoking A Spirit", "Blues For Julius & Abdul", "Signaling", "Like So Many Drops Of Water", "The Ancestors Speak", "Rediscovery Of An Age", and "Let It Be Known". ✨✧ Joe McPhee & Tomeka ReidLet Our Rejoicing Rise (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most powerful performances we've heard in years from the great Joe McPhee – and that's because he lets his voice speak as much as his tenor – especially on two spoken passages that highlight McPhee's message at an extremely righteous political level! Yet that's also very appropriate for the setting of the performance, which took place on Juneteenth – as a duet with cellist Tomeka Reid, who's equally amazing here – underscoring the power of Joe's presence, as the two move between open improvisation and some more tuneful passages that evoke a strong sense of history and memory that really resonate with the date. Fantastic throughout – and a key recording for both great artists – with the long "Juneteenth" performance, plus "Nation Time For Real This Time" and "Alone Together". LP, Vinyl record album
