✨✧ Django ReinhardtJazz In Paris – Swing 48 ... CD
Universal (France), 1947. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the last great recordings by Django Reinhardt – a series of 78 rpm recordings for the Blue Star label in Paris, done in a variety of settings, both large and small! About half the tracks on the CD feature Django with the Hot Club lineup that included Hubert Rostaing on clarinet and Joseph Reinhardt on rhythm guitar – and other titles include 2 recorded with the quintet of trumpeter Rex Stewart, 1 with the Orchestre Du Boeuf Sur Le Toit, and 1 with a quintet that includes Michel De Villers on alto sax. The CD features 12 titles in all, all remastered from the original 78s – and titles include "Vette", "Swing 48", "Minor Blues", "Peche A La Mouche", "Danse Norvegienne", and "Blues For Barclay", done in 2 takes. ✨✧ Django ReinhardtJazz In Paris – Django's Blues ... CD
Universal (France), 1947. Used ... $4.99
Late recordings by the legendary Hot Club Of Paris – a selection of 15 titles that were all originally recorded as 78rpm singles, all remastered and wonderfully packaged in keeping with the Jazz In Paris standards! The recordings boast some especially great clarinet work by Hubert Rostaing – a player whose sound is as sublime as that of Django on the guitar! Many of the tunes are relatively spare, and feature clarinet and guitar interplay that hangs nicely in space – almost prefacing later 50s experiments by the team of Jimmy Guiffre and Jim Hall, but with a more traditional bent, of course. Titles include "Gipsy With A Song", "September Song", "Brazil", "Django's Blues", "Love's Mood", "I Love You", and "Moppin The Bride". CD

Stanislas TohonOwhaaou EP ... LP
Hot Casa (France), Late 80s. New Copy ... $29.99 32.99
Four rare tracks from Cotonou singer Stanislas Tohon – all originally issued only as rare singles, and brought together here as a package that represents some of the first global circulation of this work outside his scene! The music is from that time when contemporary electronic modes were percolating nicely with African styles – so that there's a clubby vibe to all tracks, with elements that tie the music nicely to some of the cultural criss-crossing that was taking place on the Paris scene of the time! The sounds are an evolution of earlier modes explored on labels like Jive or Celluloid – and titles include "Owhaaou", "Mi Tchinker", "Zeimdjan (radio edit)", and "Magnifirec". ✨✧ VariousBoogieland Chapter 1 – French Grooves ... CD
Universal (France), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very cool look at a lost legacy in French music – disco and club grooves from the late 70s and early 80s, most of which never got any play at all on our side of the Atlantic! The tracks here mostly go way beyond the obvious choices of Cerrone and Kongas, and often have a playful approach to the music that has French vocals stepping out with catchy, groovy, and sometimes sexy lyrics – all set to rhythms that shift up nicely, and also move past some of the more standard Euro disco modes that were usually the main export of the period! There's not too much in the way of history in the notes – and we'd love to read more – but the song choices are great, very fresh – and include "Palace Hotel (ext)" by Preface, "Quand Tu Danses" by Micky Milan, "Chante Avec Moi" by Herbert Leonard, "Je Ne Veux Pas Rentrer Chez Moi Seule (single version)" by Agathe & Regrets, "Do You Speak French" by Night School, "Homosexualis Discothecus" by Raymond Alessandrini & Jean Yanne, "Visa Pour Aimer (ext)" by Plaisir, "Get Funk" by Black White & Co, and "Wake Up & Move Funk" by Eddy Rosemond. ✨✧ Barney Kessel & Stephane GrappelliLimehouse Blues ... LP
Black Lion, 1969. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An album that has European jazz great Stephane Grapelli revising the format of his legendary Hot Club Of France with guitarist Django Reinhardt – but in a very different mode, given that this group features electric guitar from Barney Kessel! Kessel is great, and his warm, round tones do very little to change things up from his usual groove – but the setting is definitely a fresh one for Barney, given that the combo features rhythm guitar from Nini Rosso, and sweetly-crafted violin lines from Grappelli! The rest of the group features Michel Gaudry on bass and Jean-Louis Viale on drums. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousDiscophilia Belgica – Next Door Disco & Local Spacemusic From Belgium 1975 to 1987 ... CD
Sdban (Belgium), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A European disco world that's ripe for rediscovery – one that's much more obscure than better-known club work from Germany, France, and Italy – but which may well be even groovier than the work from those three scenes! The package is a great complement to some of the funk and jazz sets on the Sdban label – and like those, it really digs deep – to uncover a vast array of music from the small nation – which was clearly a hotbed of groovy activity in the 70s, at a level that none of us realized at the time! The tunes here mix together funk and pop, soul and disco – all in ways that criss-cross strongly with more familiar modes of the period – but often have an offbeat quality, and sometimes a surprising sense of humor that comes through in the mostly English lyrics in the lead. 2CD set features 30 tracks – and titles include "Ethereo Disco" by R Roland, "King Kong" by Carl Watson, "Baby Won't You Turn Me On" by Charles Watson, "Sexy" by Lovedream, "La Gomme" by L2, "Cool & Get Up" by Quartz, "I'm Free" by Steve, "Groovin To The Music" by Flame, "Queen To The Pharoah" by Marianne, "Feel So Glad" by Dan Davis, "Ivro De Vie" by Kevin Moraine, "Be My Love Tonight" by CC Band, "Strange How You Move" by Venus, and "Bubblegum" by Bubble.
