Rough and funky piano from Googie Rene – one of the hippest cats on the LA scene of the 50s and 60s! Googie first got his start laying down boogie-styled R&B numbers, but as the 60s moved in, Googie moved onto a whole new batch of grooves – picking up bits of beatnik jazz, soundtrack themes, and even early funky combo grooving! This excellent set's one of the first to look at Googie's genius – and pulls together a host of hard-hitting piano based numbers – originally recorded for the tiny Class and Rendezvous labels, and spanning the decade from 1956 to 1966. 26 tracks in all, with titles that give you a great idea of the grooves – "Wiggle Tail (parts 1 & 2)", "Skumbo", "Bossa Baby", "Flapjacks (parts 1 & 2)", "Sunrise", "The Slide (parts 1 & 2)", "Smokey Joe's La La", "Chica Boo", "Mercy Mercy", and "Soul Zone". A rare CTI entry from funky flute master Jeremy Steig – a musician whose style is a great fit for the label! There's more of an electric vibe here than on Steig's earlier records – but that creates a nice current of soul that really helps things take off in a nicely different way. The record features Steig's funky flute in front of some larger arrangements by David Matthews – and the style of the record is a blend of CTI electric and some of the choppier bits of earlier Steig albums, blended with some mellow soul lead vocals on three tracks by Googie Coppola – who sings in a manner that's almost like Minnie Riperton! Tracks include the funky groover "Hopscotch", plus the nice soul tracks "Firefly", "Living Inside Your Love", and "Everything Is Coming To The Light". LP, Vinyl record album

The "encounter" of the title is a reference to the added players on the set – as Flora's groove is expanded by a host of well-chosen players – some familiar from other Purim records, some making a strong initial appearance here. George Duke plays a host of keyboards on the set, and other musicians include Joe Henderson on tenor, Hermeto Pascoal on keyboards and vocals, Ron Carter on acoustic bass, Alphonso Johnson on electric bass, Ngugu Chancler on drums, Raul De Souza on trombone, McCoy Tyner on piano, and of course the ever-present Airto on percussion! Flora's vocals are as lovely as ever, and if anything seem to reach even farther to the heavens in a setting like this. A really great entry into one of our favorite series ever – and a set that's overflowing with rare jukebox jazz from the 60s! These aren't the heady tracks of the Coltrane generation, but the kind of soulful stompers that were brewing underneath – circulating on 45s from lots of indie-labels – and often sitting in a sweet space between hardbop and R&B! Lots of tunes have a very mod feel – hence the title – either a strong tenor solo, or some sweet Hammond, or some skittish rhythms – and the set features lots of tracks that we'd never heard before, and a few more than we'd forgotten about too.
