Kool & TogetherSittin On A Red Hot Stove/Nassau Beat (demo) ... 7-inch
Big Crown, Early 70s. New Copy ... $8.99 9.99
Two rare grooves from this legendary group! "Sittin On A Red Hot Stove" is a slow-stepping monster – very hard and funky, but moving at a pace that's much more leisurely than anyone who's getting themselves burned on a grill! The tune's got a completely badass vibe that's almost like Merda – and it's backed here by a demo version of "Nassau Beat" – a very loose reworking of "Funky Nassau", with a nicely dark edge! 7-inch, Vinyl record

East Of UndergroundHell Below (East Of Underground/Soap/Black Seeds/Sound Trek) (3CD set) ... CD
US Army/Now Again, 1971/1972. Used 3CDs ... $12.99
Proof that the US Army had plenty going on during the 70s – as you'll hear from this killer set of military-produced grooves from East Of Underground! The set goes way past the previous East Of Underground reissue – to feature work by the groups Soap, Black Seeds, and Sound Trek – all wrapped up in a beautiful package that's as visually pleasing as the music is funky! The cuts here were all recorded by US Army servicemen during the height of the Vietnam war – as Army-issued albums designed to encourage recruitment (as if a few funky grooves could help offset the bad press the war was getting on TV!) But despite that odd origin, the music here is all pretty great – mostly covers of familiar tunes from the time, but recorded with a nicely gritty quality that's mighty nice – and which makes the overall feel of the records like digging into some lost small studio tapes – ala Numero! Now Again have done a great job of putting together the whole package, too – contributing a wealth of notes and photos, and really digging deep into the scene in which these unique records were created. Not only that, but the packaging also replicates the style of the original odd releases too! The set features a CD each of music by East Of Underground and Soap – plus another CD that brings together an unusual double LP by the groups Black Seeds and Sound Trek. Titles include "I Just Want To Celebrate", "Kool & The Gang", "Walking In The Rain", "Backstabbers", "I Love Everything About You", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Hell Below", "Higher", "Popcorn/Santana", "Walk On By", "Java Girl", and "Get Together". CD
(Still sealed with the hype sticker!)

✨✧ Fatback BandFatbackin' – The Perception Sessions (People Music/Let's Do It Again/Feel My Soul) ... CD
Perception/Castle (UK), 1972/1974. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The funkiest early work by Fatback! This 2CD set features all three of their albums for the Perception label – all brilliant funky gems that stand with some of the best funk of the early 70s. At this point, the group has a raw hard sound – mixing together choppy guitar, hard drums, and rolling bass in a style that was only matched by a rare few of their contemporaries, like Kool & The Gang or The Meters. All three albums have a bit of their own feel – from the party style of People Music, to the sweeter soul of Feel My Soul, to the straight hard funk of Let's Do It Again – and alone or together, they're some of the best funky soul you could find from the early 70s. The super-expanded set features 28 cuts in all – including the b-side only "Dance Girl", plus "Soul March", "Nija Walk", "Street Dance", "Take A Ride On The Soul Train", "Let's Do It Again", "Goin To See My Baby", "Feeling Mellow", "Feel My Soul", and "Makin Love". ✨✧ Mass ProductionWelcome To Our World Of Merry Music – The Definitive Collection (3CD set) ... CD
Cotillion/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of grooves from Mass Production – one of the best of the large funk ensembles to hit the mainstream at the end of the 70s – even though they didn't always get the success they deserved! That doesn't stop these guys from giving their all, though – super-sharp, super-tight instrumentation that comes down on the groove right from the get-go – and which moves with a fast funk energy that's a nice contrast to some of the stiffer, clunkier modes that were floating around at the time! These guys inherit the best impulses of Earth Wind & Fire and Kool & The Gang – and find a way to make their large lineup sound nice and lean, never too overcooked – with shifting vocals that really help keep things interesting throughout. The 3CD package features 45 tracks from their seven year stretch recording for Atlantic/Cotillion Records – and titles include "Sky High", "Groove Me", "Our Thought", "Bopp", "Turn Up The Music", "Diamond Chips", "Inner City", "Sun Dancer", "Victory 83", "Magic", "I Like To Dance", "Welcome To Our World", "Slow Bump", "Time Bomb", "Keep My Heart Together", "Cosmic Lust", "I Believe In Music", "Fun In The Sun", "Just Wanna Make A Dream Come True", "Firecracker", and "Eknuf (inst)". HavanaLIFE – Living In Fearless Emotion ... CD
Skoolcraft, 2005. Used ... $9.99
A stunning debut from Havana – a really compelling set, and one with a sound to bridge a number of different scenes at once! At one level, Havana's got a smoothness that could easily put her in the forefront of mainstream soul – but at another, she also has a keen ear for a more cosmically-oriented tune – heard to great effect in the album's use of gliding keyboards and slight electric touches. Production is a great part of the strength of the set – and is handled by Zo, Nicolay, and Waajeed – who manage to bring together the warmth of the California sound with some of the spacier touches of current Detroit. Titles include "Feel My Love", "Yeah", "Shine", "Life", "Search In", "Tangled", "True Luv", and "Caught Up". CD
