A mighty heavy group – paying tribute to the late drummer Alvin Fiedler – working with the kind of fierce improvisation that Fiedler would have really loved! Tenorist KiddJordan was a frequent musical partner of Alvin on record – and the group here really recreates some of the intensity they could deliver together – with HamidDrake on drums and percussion, Joel Futterman on piano, and WilliamParker on bass – soaring out beautifully on one extended improvisation that takes up the entire record! Futterman is ferocious on piano, really matching the searing sounds that come from Jordan's horn – as he blows with a legacy of bold, spontaneous creation that almost takes us back to the years of ESP Records or BYG/Actuel. CD
The title definitely gets it right – as the quintet's an all-star lineup that features Marshall Allen on alto sax, KiddJordan on tenor, HamidDrake on drums, and both Alan Silva and WilliamParker on bass! The twin basses are really wonderful – and have this deep texture that really shapes the performance – a sense of tone and timing that brings urgency to the record in a way that either player on their own wouldn't have been able to achieve – often with a sense of soul that really adds a lot to the reeds! CD features six long live tracks – all improvised by the group. CD
An amazing tribute to the music of Peter Kowald – the bassist whose work did a lot to transform the sound of avant jazz on both sides of the Atlantic during the past few decades! The package features a CD and 2DVDs – the latter of which each feature films shot during Kowald's 2000 tour of the US – both mixing live performance with interview material and footage from the trips. Off The Road is the first DVD – and features material from a few locations – and Chicago Improvisations is the second, and features work from the Windy City, with appearances by Ken Vandermark and Fred Anderson. The music on the CD is a great testament to Kowald's mighty powers on the bass – and features him playing in a variety of settings – working with players who include WilliamParker on bass, KiddJordan on tenor, George Lewis on trombone, Eddie Gale on trumpet, and HamidDrake on drums. A really wonderful package – and well worth the price! CD
(Digipak has light wear and loose teeth on one of the trays.)
