Blacks & Blues (Obenewa, Kaidi Tatham, & Dego)Spin/Don't Know Why/You Know The Feeling ... 12-inch
2000 Black (UK), 2019. New Copy (pic cover)... $12.99
Great work from Blacks & Blues – a fantastic trio that features skittish rhythms from Kaidi Tatham and Dego, topped with great vocals from female singer Obenewa! "Spin" is a pulsating groover that's got a deeper vibe than the clubs – and "Don't Know Why" really has Obenewa sounding great – inflecting the lyrics in this really nice way. "You Know The Feeling" has more of a 4Hero groove – with the keys pulsating right alongside with the vocals over snapping, crackling beats! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Kaidi TathamExtrovert City EP ... LP
2000 Black (UK), 2016. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Brilliant sounds from Kaidi Tatham – an artist we never seem to hear enough from – but who also can pack more into the space of this short EP than others would for an entire album! The music soars in this great blend of 4Hero rhythms and jazzy improvisations – sublime keyboards over rhythms that are complex, but focused – with that cosmic crackle that it seems like few folks can hardly to this well anymore, and which may well make the 2000 Black label one of the few outposts for magical music this great! Nadine Charles sings on "The Shadow Ain't Going Nowhere" – and the other two tracks are mostly instrumental – "The Extrovert City" and "Mister Seahorse". LP, Vinyl record album

Kaidi TathamIn My Life EP ... LP
2000 Black (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $12.99
Blinding sounds from Kaidi Tatham – an artist who's really continued the best spirit of the 4Hero sound with records like this! The set's only got four tracks, but you'll hardly miss anything at all – as Tatham packs so much into such a small space – changing up the rhythms in this amazing way, while also creating explosively soulful keyboard moments amidst the moodier basslines! Nadine Charles sings a bit on the record, but the instrumental spaces speak volumes themselves – and titles include "Freddie Can't Run Away", "But You Bring It Up", "Is Crimbo Really Here", and "In My Life". Kaidi TathamIt's A World Before You ... CD
First Word (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $12.99
Kaidi Tatham hasn't given us many albums under his own name over the years – but each one is a great cause for celebration – as his musical vision is so fresh and bold, we're even more in love with Tatham in a full length setting, compared to his many 12" singles! The scope of sound here is wonderful – very jazzy, but with lots of the soaring, cosmic styles that have made Kaidi such a key part of the London scene for 20 years or so – not just in his work with Bugz In The Attic, but also his continuing legacy of collaboration and boundless creative energy! That energy is firmly in place here – as the record explodes from the very first note – crackles of beats, waves of keyboards, and an amazingly positive sound – done with a bit of help from Dego, Children of Zeus, and Eric Lau. Titles include "Cold", "Your Dreams Don't Mean A Thing", "Cupid", "It's A World Before You", "Soon Come", "Outta Audah", "It's About Who You Know", "2Tone", "Joyous", and "Sweet Kinch". CD

Kaidi TathamSerious Times EP ... LP
First Word (UK), 2019. New Copy (pic cover)... $12.99
Soaring sounds from Kaidi Tatham – music that's upbeat and moving, yet wonderfully precise in its simplicity too! Kaidi works in this cosmic fusion style that owes plenty to the London style a decade or so back – but it also moves forward with a lot more live instrumentation in the mix, maybe the full flowering of the deeper jazz elements we always knew that Tatham had in his music! Keyboards are the main solo instrument, but there's plenty happening in the rhythms too – always complex, but never too heady – on titles that include "Cost Of Living", "Zallom", "Sugar", and "Don't Cry Now". Down To The BoneBrooklyn Heights EP (2019 Record Store Day Release) ... 12-inch
Dome (UK), 2019. New Copy (pic cover)... $16.99
A very cool little single – one that brings back the DTTB groove in a mighty nice way! In addition to featuring the songs "Concrete Jungle" and "Deja Vu", the set also features two great remakes – a 2019 live studio recording of their classic "Staten Island Groove", and a new Kaidi Tatham reinterpretation of "Brooklyn Heights"! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Freddie Gibbs & MadlibBandana ... CD
RCA, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99
Maybe the best Madlib-produced LP since the highest peaks of the prime Stones Throw era, and Freddie Gibbs is on fire throughout! Each one does what he does best here and ups the ante. 'Lib is focused on crackling soul beats and hazy funk – masterfully utilizing vintage and contemporary sample sources from Donny Hathaway and Syl Johnson to Kaidi Tatham and The Heliocentrics – delivering the right kind of gritty headnodding vibe without compromising on his distinctive style. Freddie Gibbs is uncompromisingly raw and fiercely focused, varying the speed of his flow when the mood strikes, so what sounds like it might be an uncommonly inspired freestyle one second rolls into the most dexterous lyricism for the next couple minutes. Seriously strong stuff, with just a few guest appearances by Pusha T, Killer Mike, Anderson.Paak, Yasiin Bey & Black Thought. Titles include "Half Manne Half Cocaine", "Cataracts", "Gat Damn", "Education", "Crime Pays", "Palmolive", "Guannis", "Soul Right" and more. CD

ISoul8Balance ... CD
Sonar Kollektiv (Germany), 2006. Used ... $5.99
A tremendous full length debut from ISoul8 – a record that's billed by Phil Asher in the notes as representing everything that was once soulful in house music – but which we think offers even more than that! The album's certainly got a housey feel overall – but the styles here aren't just straightforward club, and often show some of the more farther-reaching modes of the group's Sonar Kollektiv contemporaries. There's great keyboards, slightly complex rhythm patterns, and a way of coming at the groove that shows plenty of influence from the recent London scene – but also that deeper soulfulness that Asher refers to – a sense of depth that comes through especially on the vocals! Guests include Valerie Etienne, Osunlade, Just One, Diamondancer, Marcus Begg, Paul Randolph, and Kaidi Tatham – and titles include "Clover", "Give It Up", "So Simple", "Free", "How I Feel", "Just The Way I Like It", "No Longer Fear", "The Vow", "On My Heart", and "A Silent Force". VariousFrom The Archive Vol 2 – Compiled By Volcov ... CD
BBE (UK), 2010s. New Copy ... $8.99 19.99
A fantastic trip through the archive with Volcov – even if most of the cuts here are a bit more recent than those that usually get archival status! And yet in a way, many of these cuts almost went to the archives directly – especially in this digital age for modern soul and club, where so many great singles and albums don't make it onto vinyl – and fade fast in the fast rush of new music hitting the internet. That's why we love collections like this so much – as Volcov's done a great job of grabbing the best bits from the past decade or so, and weaving them together as a strong reminder of how much wonderful soul music is being created on this planet – most of it still waiting to be discovered. There's a few older bits here, but most tracks are contemporary – and titles include "Caterpillar" by Rebirth, "All That Glitters" by Carleen Anderson, "Let The Music Play" by Collective Peace, "Spiraling Prism" by Ian O'Brien, "Ori Space" by Ron Trent, "Turn It Around (Eric Lau rmx)" by Ruth Koleva, "Planet Birth (Xantone Blacq rmx/Volcov edit)" by Intuit with Andy Bey, "Lawra (Volcov edit)" by Tony Williams, "Blue Room (Kaidi Tatham's shokazulu rmx)" by Quentin Kane & Simon Sheldon with TK Blue, "Finding The Peace" by Skymark, "I Put A Spell On You" by Honey Sweet with Cindy Mizelle, and "After Life (part 2)" by Harry Whitaker.
