Joyce HurleyJoyce (180 gram pressing) ... LP
44 Records/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99 39.99
One of the most soulful albums to come out of the Australian scene of the 70s – and the crowning achievement of jazz singer Joyce Hurley – a vocalist we'd easily rank with Dee Dee Bridgewater for depth of righteous expression! Joyce's voice is definitely different than Dee Dee's – with some very unique phrasing – but this album's got the same sort of uncommonly expressive vibe as Bridgewater's legendary Afro Blue set. Backing is by a small combo with nice reed and electric piano work – usually letting Joyce take the lead at most moments, but with horn help to shape the sound of the tunes in really nice ways – a balance that few jazz records of the time ever hit this well – and which continues to uphold the soulful power of Hurley's vocals! The album's got loads of great numbers – including the jazz dance classic "Sunbath", a wicked take on "Maiden Voyage", and the instrumental number "Sambole" – plus other titles that include "Blues For Joyce", "Left Alone", "How Are You Dreaming", and "Threedom Street". Motor/Universal (Germany), 1995. New Copy (reissue)... $39.99 44.99
A key moment in the rebirth of the legendary Joyce – a set recorded on the European scene at a time when interest in her older records was at an all-time high, yet before she really had gotten the chance to record at a level that would take her back to those roots! Some of the studio Joyce records of the late 80s/early 90s never fully got the charms that made her so great, and instead tried to force her into other modes that didn't really work – which makes the lean live approach here a key back-to-basics moment, one that the Brazilian singer would follow on a number of great records to come. The crowd is very lively, and Joyce does a good job of leading them on as she runs through classics like "Samba De Gago", "Aldeia De Ogum", "Taxi Driver", "Fa Da Bahia", and a host of other great tracks! Far Out (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
A record that could have been the biggest breakthrough in the career of the legendary Joyce – yet the set was never issued at the time! The late 70s session has Joyce recording in New York, under the guidance of studio maestro Claus Ogerman – who has a wonderful way of elevating the overall quality of the proceedings, while never getting in the way of that special magic that made Joyce so wonderful – especially on her albums for EMI! As with those records, Joyce plays acoustic guitar alongside her amazing vocal approach – a style that's unlike anything else we can describe – informed by jazz and Brazilian music, yet soaring and gliding in a completely sublime style – awash in color and light as it flies to the sky. Mauricio Maestro helped out heavily on the record too – and the other players include Mike Manieri on vibes, Michael Brecker on tenor, Joe Farrell on flute, and Nana Vasconcelos on percussion – on titles that include a fantastic early reading of "Feminina" – plus "Miserios", "Descompassadamente", "Pega Leve", "Ciclo Da Vida", "Coracao Sonhador", and "Moreno". A tremendous little album from Joyce – a rare session originally only issued in Italy, recorded in a folksy style that's a bit different than her other work! Tracks are all pretty short – many under 2 minutes long – and feature spare guitar, percussion, and lovely vocals from Joyce – really stretching out here in the laidback and open-ended format. The record is a magical treasure, and one of the best she ever recorded – a unique mix of jazzy and folksy stylings, all held together with some of the loveliest vocals ever recorded by a Brazilian singer! Titles include "Pelo Telefone", "Pesadelo", "De Frente Pro Crime", "Joia", "Chora Doutor", "Fado Tropical", and "A Historia Do Samba". LP, Vinyl record album

Far Out (UK), 1976. New Copy ... On April 22, 2023
An amazing little record – a 70s session that we'd easily rank right up there with the best recordings ever from Joyce, but one that's only being issued here for the first time ever! The sound is brilliant – that beautiful mix of strong and sweet that you'll always find when Joyce is at her best – and the set features equally wonderful contributions from Nana Vasconcelos on percussion, and Mauricio Maestro on bass, vocals, and guitar! All sounds are acoustic, but have this otherworldly feel – that buoyant, sparkling sort of quality on Joyce classics like Feminina or Agua E Luz – the there's a driving sense of rhythm that really moves the whole album – taking it far past what you might expect from the spare instrumentation. Tremendous stuff throughout, and a musical discovery that has us falling in love with the music of Joyce all over again! Titles include "Clareana", "Metralhadeira", "Nacional Kid", "Tudo Bonito", "Memorias Do Porvir", "Visoes Do Amanhecer", "Chegada", and "Banana". A gem of a record from the lovely Joyce – a set recorded during the same key stretch as her early 80s albums for EMI – yet much more obscure! The album's got the same brilliant blend of jazz and bossa phrasing as her classics Agua E Luz and Feminina – and really brings Joyce's beautiful vocals to the forefront, with a strong focus on that fluid, jazzy style we totally love! Acoustic guitar is key to the instrumentation, yet there's also a few electric touches on keyboards – yet used quite softly, so that the presence of Joyce really dominates the record – but with a power that's greater than some of her more solo sets. Wonderful throughout –a nd with cuts that include "Nacional Kid", "Curioso", "Baracumbarra", "Tardes Cariocas", "Luz Do Chao", and "Ela". CD

The girl here DOES play mean piano – using her instrument in a way that's surprisingly soulful and filled with lyrical touches! We really don't know Collins much at all – but we've always dug this standout album on Jazzland, part of the label's wave of new discoveries right at the start of the 60s – and the set's got almost an Oscar Peterson Trio sort of vibe, with tunes that hit hard rhythmically one minute, then lay back into more intimate expressions the next. Rhythm here is by the team of Roy Green on bass and Frank Butler on drums – and tracks include versions of "Day In Day Out", "The End Of A Love Affair", "I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart", "Walkin", and "Ah Moore". The lovely Joyce – sounding lovelier here than we've heard in years – on a special Japanese album that really takes the singer back to her best classic territory! Backing is by a small group, and nicely jazzy – with piano from Helio Alves, and drums from Tutty Moreno – providing gentle accompaniment, but really letting the lady stretch out on her own vocals and acoustic guitar – with those soaring, cascading lines that first made us fall in love with her music way back in the 70s – captured perfectly here with impeccable, understated production. Alves notes on the piano are especially beautiful – ringing out in a way that really offsets the vocals and guitar – on titles that include "Mingus, Miles, & Coltrane", "Humaita", "No Misterio Do Samba", "Sambando No Apocalipse", "Casa Da Flor", "Na 75", "Ave Maria Serena", and "Forrobodo Das Meninas". Jazz versions of classics by Antonio Carlos Jobim – all done by a group arranged and directed by guitarist Mario Adnet, and featuring guest work from Joyce, Helio Delmiro, Romero Lumbambo, and others! The sound here is really fresh – not merely just a reworking of Jobim's original ideals, but a recasting of them in lightly arranged modes that often take on the shapes, colors, and textures of work by Moacir Santos – styles that are warm, but often have some sharper edges underneath, thanks to great interplay between the instruments. Bits of horns, guitar, piano, and percussion all come together with a tremendous sense of grace – and titles include "Tema Jazz", "Sue Ann", "Domingo Sincopado", "So Danco Samba", "Paulo Voo Livre", "Polo Pony", and "Bate Boca". Raw Fusion (Sweden), 2008. Used ... $7.99
One of the most soulful sets we've ever heard from the Raw Fusion label – work that's heavy on influences from 60s and 70s soul, but which also has a slightly cosmic undercurrent too! The rhythms here have that crisp, contemporary groove that always makes Raw Fusion great – but the songs are also filled with warm horns, clubby basslines, and compelling soul vocals from singers who include Christin Deralas, Karl Wagner, Abby Joyce, Carmen Hendricks, and Kylie Auldist! Bennson's got a really great way of bringing these talents together – using them to bridge the gap between classic and 21st Century soul styles – in a really focused groove of his own. A real killer that lives up to the promise we first heard in Raw Fusion years ago – with titles that include "Incredible", "Let The Love", "Accidental Lover", "Whatever It Is", "Can't Get Enough", "Fly High", "One Minute Left", "Step To The Plate", and "The Greatest". Jean Carn isn't in the group this time around, but the set does feature a totally great twin-vocal approach – with singing by Joyce Green and John Conner, blending their voices together in a style that's right up there with the most righteous 70s jazz experiments by Horace Silver or Billy Gault! Sondor (Uruguay), 1981. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
A rare bossa set from Argentina – but one that sparkles like some of the best MPB of the time! The lovely Maria De Fatima sings and plays guitar in a style that's not unlike Joyce – quite warm, and often a bit airy – gliding out beautifully over lightly dancing rhythms that draw on samba, bossa, and a bit of jazz! But there's also some more sophisticated phrasings here too – elements that clearly come from a love of 70s work by Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and their generation – served up subtly and simply by Maria in her music, with a really unique feel overall. Instrumentation is relatively light – again, a quality that reminds us of Joyce at her best – and backings include work from the Fattoruso brothers, who'd crafted some earlier bossa sets on their own! Titles include "Voce Sorrindo E Entregando", "Toda Menina Bahiana", "Coisas Estranhas", "Bahia Com H", "Tres Pontas", "Sao Joao Xango Menino", and "Cancombe Brasileiro Montevideano". Genius 70s work from Woody Herman – funky big band with electric touches, served up on a range of wonderful tunes! Woody's still at the helm of the group on saxes and clarinet – but as with other Fantasy and Cadet albums, the real thanks here goes to arrangers – who include Bill Stapleton, Alan Broadbent, Tony Klatka, and Richard Evans – who's making a brief post-Cadet appearance here to serve up a fierce version of his classic "First Thing I Do" – a jazzy reworking of the Joyce Williams tune, done here with a nice break, wah-wah guitar, and a real badass soundtrack style! Rhythm players include Joe Beck and Ray Barretto – and the whole album's great throughout. Titles include "Think On Me", "A Child Is Born", "Freedom Jazz Dance", "First Thing I Do", "Giant Steps", and a great take on Chick Corea's "La Fiesta", complete with electric piano! A beautiful bit of spiritual jazz – with a slight funky tip, and some incredible instrumentation all around! Maulawi Nururdin works here with a group of Chicago players that includes saxes, percussion, bass, piano, trombones, and some heavenly vocals by the twin team of Joyce Major and Diane Cunningham, who come together amazingly, splitting the left and right channel of the recording, in a style that's a bit like the vocals on James Mason's album, or on parts of the classic Ramp record – a fantastic element when added to the core spirituality of the jazz! One track's a bit out there, but the rest of the record has this wonderful spiritual vibe – with bits of modal grooving, and a warm soulful finish that makes the album a treasure. Metro Blue, 1994. Used ... $4.99
When this album was first issued in the mid 90s by EMI, it quietly glided onto the market, with very little effect. Over the past few years, though, the record has slowly been championed by a large number of American critics and musicians, and has come to be one of the most critically acclaimed releases by a Brazilian musician in recent years. The album's a mix of jazz-tinged vocal tracks by Marisa, with a style that certainly owes something to earlier Brazilian singers like Gal Costa or Joyce, but which also has lots of its own nice touches. Arto Linday produced the set, and Marisa runs through a batch of songs that includes versions of Lou Reed's "Pale Blue Eyes", Arnaldo Antunes "Deepest Night", Jorge Ben's "Balanca Pema", and her own "Enquanto Isso", sung with Laurie Anderson. There's also loads of guests on the album – like Gilberto Gil, Carlinhos Brown, and others! CD

Moody's working here alongside some sweet work on electric piano by either Jodie Christian or Tennyson Stephens – and with some sly and soulful arrangements by Chicago soul maestro Richard Evans, who also plays bass on the record and gives it a style that's almost an extension of the later Cadet kind of groove. The album features an excellent funky instrumental version of " First Thing I Do In the Morning", originally a funky vocal 45 by Chicago singer Joyce Williams – and other cuts include "Trilby", "Don't Let Me Be Lonely", "World Is A Ghetto", "Good Sense Humor Man", and "Country City Country". Jule Styne/Bob MerrillSugar (2CD version – with bonus mix) ... CD
MGM/Kritzerland, 1972. Used 2CD ... $19.99
A surprisingly groovy musical based on the film Some Like It Hot – one of the better of a slew of 20s-set musicals that played big on Broadway in the 60s! The music and lyrics are by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, respectively – but the thing that really makes the soundtrack itself work is the lead performances by Robert Morse and Tony Roberts – the former always a charming presence on the stage, the latter a surprisingly good straight man. Elaine Joyce handles the Marilyn Monroe character – and the music sports some nicely jazzy arrangements by Elliott Lawrence. Titles include "It's Always Love", "Hey Why Not", "Sugar", "November Song", and "Sun On My Face". 2CD version features a full bonus mix of the score – remixed just for this release, with better sound than the original album! Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s. Used ... $9.99 11.99
A much-needed look at the post-Tropicalia years in Brazil – a time when cultural activity wasn't as politically explosive as before, but still continued to thrive at a highly creative level underground! The work of these years carries many inspirations from the Tropicalia years of freedoms – but it also often turns the focus towards the personal a bit more – drawing on individual roots and regional cultures for some of the elements in the music, and often pushing the sounds towards even more experimental levels! Some of the straighter modes of before have given way to more of a hippie aesthetic – but that approach is never nearly as self-indulgent as it is in the US, and more just an indication of how underground some of the musicians and ideals have gone by this point. As usual with Soul Jazz titles, the collection comes with great notes that really get at the music and the period – and the CD features 19 tracks that include "Amor" by Secos E Molhados, "Tinindo Trincando" by Novos Baianos, "Punhal De Prata" by Alceu Valenca, "Passara" by Jaime & Nair, "Sai Do Sereno" by Gilberto Gil, "Corista De Rock" by Rita Lee, "Sete Cahorros" by Nelson Angelos & Joyce, "Ingazeiras" by Ednardo E O Pessoal Do Ceara, "Contendas De Sincora" by Mar Revolto, "As Adventuras De Raul Seixas Na Cidade De Thor" by Raul Seixas, "Pontos De Luz" by Gal Costa, "Mane Joao" by Erasmo Carlos, and "America Tropical" by Novos Baianos. Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.98
A long-overdue collection – and a rich document of one of our favorite sides of the Chicago soul scene! The package is devoted to the tiny Nickel and Penny labels, but it's also equally a set dedicated to legendary radio DJ Richard Pegue – whose work in both mainstream soul and later dusties formats really helped to shape our understanding of soul music! Pegue produced and wrote nearly every track on the set – which makes the collection one of the most unified the Numero Group has ever produced – a true tribute to Richard's great ear for a groovy soul record, and to all the smaller-name groups he helped support on the Windy City scene. The booklet does a great job of telling Pegue's story – really getting at the unique vision he brought to Chicago soul, and the wit and warmth that made him a favorite of many folks over the space of decades. The music alone is enough – stuff we've been waiting to get reissued for years – but together with the Numero research and booklet, the end result is sublime! Titles include "Just Say The Word" by Jerry Townes, "Fall In Love Again" by The Voices, "Never More" by Little Ben & The Cheers, "Why Do You Want To Make Me Sad" by The Norvells, "Instrumental 1" by Richard Terry & Company, "Shadows" by South Shore Commission, "This Is The Woman" by Sidney Pinchback, "The Ember Song" by Sidney Barnes, "Sign Of The Zodiac" by South Suburban Electric Strings, "This Love Of Mine" by Extensions, "Forever Is A Long Long Time" by The Voices, "Do The Pearl Girl (part 2)" by The Matta Baby, "I've Got To Find A Way" by Hallelujah Chorus, "First Thing I Do In The Morning" by Joyce Williams, and "I'm Gonna Get Even With You" by Little Ben & The Cheers. An excellent collection of rare female soul from the 60s – a set that not only features overlooked 45rpm singles from Warner Brothers at the time – but also some great gems from their famous Loma Records imprint too! If you think you know this territory, think again – as there's a huge amount of tracks here that are completely fresh to our ears – the kind of material that a label as big as Warner was able to cut with their ample staff and studio time, then never did a think to promote the singles at all – leaving a space of decades before all these 7" gems were finally able to get exposure on a set like this! The package moves between catchy group soul and deeper-burning solo material – and the whole thing's done with the usual high quality we love from Ace, from the sound quality right down to the notes in the book. Titles include "There He Goes" by The Royalettes, "We Can Find That Love" by Vickie Baines, "He's Good" by Barbara Jackson, "Contact" by Three Degrees, "Wounded" by The Cookies, "My Soul Concerto" by The Apollas, "I Taught Him (part 1)" by Gloria Scott & The Tonettes, "All Because I Love Somebody" by Barbara English, "Don't Come A Knockin" by Mary Lee Whitney, "Here I Come" by Joyce Alexander, "Jive Jimmy" by The Socialites, "The Reason Why" by The Dolls, "Bright Lights" by Delilah Kennebreuw, and "Oh Eddy My Baby" by Brenda Hall. The last album in a legendary run of music from keyboardist Doug Carn – his final album for the Black Jazz label, and a set that pushes even farther than his previous efforts! Jean Carn isn't in the group this time around, but the set does feature a totally great twin-vocal approach – with singing by Joyce Green and John Conner, blending their voices together in a style that's right up there with the most righteous 70s jazz experiments by Horace Silver or Billy Gault! This vocal balance really brings a new sort of power to Carn's music – furthering the righteous spirit of earlier years with a hell of a lot of energy – also aided by great instrumental work from Ronnie Laws on tenor and soprano sax, Thurman Green on trombone, Calvin Keys and Nathan Page on guitars, and Big Black on percussion. Beautiful scatting bossa from Sabrina Malheiros – an artist we're only getting to know with this album, but who we already totally love! Sabrina's got a warm and breezy style that takes us back to the glory days of the 60s bossa scene – but she's also working here with an approach to rhythm and instrumentation that brings in some well-placed modern touches. The album's not just a simple "bossa vocals with electronics" album – like too many others on the market – as Sabrina's mostly working with acoustic instrumentation, touched off by a bit of keyboards and the occasional crackling drum part. And instead, there's a depth here that reminds us a lot of Joyce – a warmth that catches fire immediately, and which stays glowing throughout a range of expressive styles. The tunes are really great too – original, soulful, and without any too-easy bossa cliches. A real gem from Far Out – and one of the label's best albums in years! Bossa via Paris – and a wonderfully dreamy set from the team of Tom & Joy! And Tom is Thomas Naim, guitarist on the record, and an arranger with a wonderful feel for a variety of different larger backdrops – one that takes Joy's vocals through classic bossa, soulful fusion, and even a bit of Afro Funk on the set! The pair have really expanded their sound from the days when they used to record under the name of Tom & Joyce – and the record's got a playful depth that's even more important, given that it's their first US release. A definite obsession for fans of Northern Soul in the 60s – the mighty Okeh label, an imprint of Columbia Records that was reactivated for a few key years, to become a hotbed of Chicago soul! Okeh's efforts were often headed by legendary producer Carl Davis – who had an amazing ear not just for important new artists, but also for finding ways to change up the groove in the hippest way possible – often with some of the more sophisticated touches that represent just how special Chicago soul was at the time, in ways that are very different even from nearby Detroit! Some Okeh artists scored big, but the label also recorded many more who never hit the charts – but who turned out some incredible singles that are still the gold standard for collectors. Most folks know the United Artists label for their famous soundtrack hits of the 60s – but back at the start, the company was very open to cutting work in all sorts of different formats – including the surprisingly great range of rockers and rockabilly numbers you'll find in this set! UA was a real powerhouse in the world of the 7" single at the end of the 50s – and as you'll hear here, they had a great ear for the kind of cuts that could burst out of a jukebox and present the listener with two minutes of upbeat, hard-stepping pleasure – maybe not the kind of cuts that gave the label that many hits, but which make a set like this a non-stop treasure trove of under-discovered goodies! One of our favorite albums ever from Eddie Jefferson – one of the last sessions he ever recorded as a leader, and a stone cooker through and through! The arrangements here are by Slide Hampton, who hits a really soulful groove for the set – one that moves away from some of the more experimental modes of other Jefferson dates of the 70s, and hits a snapping, swinging style that moves Eddie back to his hippest modes of the 60s. Hampton plays trombone in the group, and other players include Charles Sullivan on trumpet, Richie Cole on alto, Junior Cook on tenor, Hamiet Bluiett on baritone, and Harold Mabern on piano and electric piano. Leon Thomas produced the record, and Joyce Lawson guests as the female voice on a remake of "Moody's Mood For Love". Other titles include a killer version of Duke Pearson's "Jeannine" that is probably worth the price of the album alone – and there's also "Benny's From Heaven" and "Freedom Jazz Dance", both of which are great, too – plus "Summertime", "Exactly Like You", and "Night Train". As with the other Lumiar sets, the material here is not on other LPs, which makes the set an even bigger treat! There's 20 tracks in all, featuring great performances by Tom Jobim, Caetano Veloso, Joao Bosco, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Nana Caymmi, Helio Delmiro, Joyce, Simone, Leny Andrade, Roberto Menescal, Emilio Santiago, Nico Assumpcao, and others! One of the hardest, heaviest soul groups of the 70s – so much so that their music often has a fair bit of rockish touches too – especially in the guitars, which are nice and fuzzy! Lead singer Joyce Kennedy is a killer throughout – almost rivaling Nona Hendryx for unbridled energy and raw power – and the rest of the group provide lots of vocal support too – as well as some plenty heavy drums, bass, and guitar! Things really cook on titles that include "Rain", "Fire", "Fly With Me", "Dontcha Wanna Love Me", and ironically-titled "Niggizz Can't Sang Rock & Roll". LP, Vinyl record album

EMI (Brazil), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A mid 70s masterpiece from Milton Nascimento – a record that still has the soaringly ambitious touches of his other work from the time, but which also comes across with a slightly personal feel too! Nascimento's voice is near-perfect – even more spacious and heavenly than before – and the backings have a positive, triumphant quality that's extremely upbeat and bright, yet without sounding commercial at all. There's still plenty of jazzy undercurrents in the music – which was co-written with Fernando Brant, Toninho Horta, and Ronaldo Bastos – and players on the record include Wagner Tiso on keyboards, Toninho Horta on guitar, and Nivaldo Ornelas on flute. There's an additional chorus on some tracks – with vocals by Joyce, Horta, and others – and although the overall sound is impossible to describe adequately, it's a heavenly mix of complicated arrangements, unusual instrumentation, and Milton's fantastic voice. Titles include "Minas", "Idolatrada", "Paula e Bebeto", "Leila", "Ponta De Areia", "Gran Circo", and "Simples". CD also includes two bonus cuts – a cool cover of "Norwegian Wood" and "Caso Voce Queira Saber". CD

Hip British soul from the end of the 60s – surprisingly great tracks recorded at a time when the London scene was getting a lot deeper and more soulful, able to forge a whole new voice of its own! The sound here is quite different from American soul of the time – with more rock and reggae influences running through the grooves, and a much more consciously pan-racial approach that makes for some really striking moments. Amazing work from singer Dee Alexander – a wonderfully soulful album of jazz vocals, and one that we'd rank right up there with our favorite records by Carmen Lundy or Dee Dee Bridgewater! Dee's a singer who's worked in Chicago for years, but we've honestly only begun to appreciate her talents of late – possibly because she's really hipped up her sound a lot over the years, picking up a range of spiritual, soulful influences that push her music to a whole new level – as you might have heard on her recent collaboration with IG Culture. The music on the set is wonderful too – work by Chicago players we know, but have never heard this strongly before – grooving in modal and soulful modes behind Dee's great vocals, with a lineup that includes Miguel De La Cerna and Michael Logan on piano, Harrison Bankhead on bass, and Leon Joyce on drums and percussion. Titles include versions of two tunes by AACM member Henry Huff – "Live" and "You & I" – plus the Alexander originals "Long Road Ahead", "Rossingnol", "Butterfly", and "C U On The Other Side". CD

The great Guy Pederson plays bass on the record, too – in this way that's subtle, but extremely powerful in the setting – bringing some deep currents to the music alongside Hardy's acoustic guitar – all wrapped up in an echoey style of production that's completely sublime. The whole thing feels much more like a lost late 60s side on Elenco Records than Hardy's usual music – and titles include "Doigts", "Viens", "La Question", "Mer", "Le Martien", "Chanson D'O", and "Bati Mon Nid". The album's a mix of jazz-tinged vocal tracks by Marisa, with a style that certainly owes something to earlier Brazilian singers like Gal Costa or Joyce, but which also has lots of its own nice touches. 2 of Woody Shaw's greatest albums – recorded 10 years apart, and forming a fantastic CD collection! Cassandranite features fantastic early work by Woody Shaw – an album originally recorded in 1965, when Shaw was part of a core soul jazz underground that was slowly forming an answer to the "new thing" movement of the mid 60s. The session was self-produced – and not only features some killer playing by Shaw, but contains a number of other wonderful touches. Larry Young plays piano (not organ) on two tracks; Herbie Hancock is on another 3; George Cables plays electric on the last track, which also includes Harold Vick; Joe Henderson plays tenor throughout; and the great Joe Chambers is on drums. The set is filled with fantastic modal originals, all along the lines of Shaw's "Moontrane" composition – and titles include "Baloo Baloo", "Three Muses", "Tetragon", and "Cassandranite". Love Dance is equally great – spiritual, soulful, and filled with some nice modal grooving! The group's one of the best he ever worked with on Muse – with Billy Harper on tenor, plus Rene McLean, Steve Turre, Joe Bonner, and Cecil McBee – and the approach reminds us of some of the work on Strata East from the same time. The highlight of the record is the cut "Sunbath", which was done in a more famous jazz dance version by singer Joyce Hurley – but Shaw's version has a very similar groove. Harper makes many of the other tracks shine brilliantly, and titles include "Love Dance", "Obsequious", and Harper's own beautiful composition "Soulfully I Love You". CD

There's plenty more too – articles on Devin Townsend, Horse Lords, and a very cool Global Ear feature – plus Big Joanie on the Invisible Jukebox, page after page of music reviews – and even a special Wire Tapper bonus CD, with music from Balka Sound, Dave Clarkson, Lucrecia Dalt, Lady Aicha & Pisco Crane, and others! ✨✧ VariousChristmas Dreamers – Yuletide Country 1960 to 1972 (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Numero, 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really cool collection of Christmas country songs – one that digs much deeper than some of the familiar Nashville classics, as all the work here is from a variety of small labels from around the country! Most of these tracks are original tunes, mixed in with just a few remakes – and the production is usually nicely stripped-down, with a feel that's often more like the spare sound of some of the postwar hillbilly records, but maybe tuned towards themes that have a bit more of a 60s vibe overall. As with most great Christmas records, there's a nice current of melancholy here too – served up on tunes that include "Santa Claus Won't Come This Year" by Charlie Stewart, "Make This A Good Christmas" by Joyce Street, "Rock & Roll Christmas" by The Caravans, "All I Want For Christmas Is A Go Go Girl" by Ben Hinds, "When Santa Comes" by Don McGinnis & The Cactus Cutups, "What Would Santa Claus Think" by Billy Egr with Bobby Van & The Swinging Kids, "Christmas Come Back To Me" by Glenn Brookshire, and "Santa Claus Ain't A Hippie" by Charlie Stewart. ✨✧ VariousEccentric Funk (clear, yellow & purple splatter vinyl pressing) ... LP
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of rare funky nuggets – put together by the folks at the Numero Group, and an album that's billed as "the only funk album you'll ever need"! That might be a big claim, but the record is pretty darn great – a set that features a few older underground classics, plus a number of cuts we haven't heard before – all brought together from the farther reaches of the Numero universe, into one fantastically funky set! Instrumentals sit nicely next to vocal tracks – and the whole thing is filled with heavy drums, riffing guitars, and other great elements – all chosen by the sorts of folks who really know their thing. Titles include "Corruption Is The Thing" by Creations Unlimited, Slow Burner" by Swithold, "Human Race" by Human Race, "First Thing I Do In The Morning" by Joyce Williams, "Soul & Sunshine" by Harvey & The Phenomenals, "The Vibration" by Sonny Harris, "Jungle" by The Young Senators, "Ghet-To Funk" by Doralcha, "So Dam Funky" by Hot Chocolate, "Akiwana" by Village Callers, and "Iron Leg" by Mickey & The Soul Generation.
