✨✧ Kenny Barron/Dave Holland Trio with Johnathan BlakeWithout Deception ... CD
Dare 2, 2020. Used ... $7.99
This isn't the first time that pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Dave Holland have played together – but there's definitely something special about the record that really grabs our ears – and it's not just the excellent work on drums by Johnathan Blake! Barron's at his roundest, most soulful sort of tone – really grabbing the notes out of the air in this wonderful way – and Holland really follows suit too, with this very personal, organic approach that's such a change from some of his more experimental work of years back – and which makes him a stunning part of the group, especially at all those many moments when he and Barron dance around each other's sound with this beautifully resonant vibe. Titles include "Until Then", "Porto Alegre", "Without Deception", "Speed Trap", "Secret Places", "Worry Later", and "Pass It On". CD

Johnathan BlakeHomeward Bound ... CD
Blue Note, 2021. Used ... $9.99
Fantastic sounds from drummer Johnathan Blake – exactly the kind of record that's a key part of the forward-thinking sound of the Blue Note label in recent years! Blake's a drummer, but that's just part of his talents here – as the songs have a fresh crackle that links together older modes of jazz, particularly the creative spirit of Johnathan's home scene in Philly, with some of the bolder elements that have come into play with some of his up-and-coming contemporaries – featured here in a great quintet that includes Joel Ross on vibes, Immanuel Wilkins on alto, David Virelles on keyboards, and Dezron Douglas on bass. Titles include "On The Break", "Steppin Out", "Rivers & Parks", "Shakin The Biscuits", "Abiyoyo", and "LLL". CD

Vincent HerringPreaching To The Choir ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 17.99
Vincent Herring can certainly preach with his horn – a deeply soulful version of alto sax that gets plenty of room to open up and speak its message here – working through a set of long, lovely tracks with really great support! The group's a quartet – with Cyrus Chestnut on piano, Yasushi Nakamura on bass, and Johnathan Blake on drums – instantly hitting that kind of a groove that really makes Herring sound his best – a level of accompaniment he doesn't always get on record – but when he does, on a set like this, it reminds us all over again how much we can love his music when it finds the right sound! There's a solidity here that makes the record one of Herring's best in years – and titles include "Dudli's Dilemma", "Ojos De Rojo", "Granted", "Preaching To The Choir", "Minor Swing", "Fried Pies", and "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life". Michael ThomasEvent Horizon ... CD
Giant Step Arts, 2020. New Copy 2CD ... $7.99 24.90
Not the first album we've heard from saxophonist Michael Thomas, but a record that definitely has us looking at his music all over again – thanks to a double-length collection of wonderfully extended tunes – on which Thomas really runs with bold, open energy on the alto sax! The group here has no piano – just the trumpet of Jason Palmer in the frontline, plus bass from Hans Glawischnig and drums from Johnathan Blake – two rhythm players who bring plenty to the table, but sometimes like to let the horns to the swinging – which Thomas and Palmer do in these nicely blocky passages of sound. All tunes are originals by the leader – and titles include "Fox & Cat", "Dr Teeth", "Framework", "Chant", "Underground", "Event Horizon", and "Distance". CD

✨✧ Lonnie SmithBreathe ... LP
Blue Note, 2021. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great work from Lonnie Smith – one of the few Hammond heroes from the past who's continued to give us fresh-sounding music over the years! Lonnie's been reinvigorated after returning to Blue Note – and this tight little set follows all the growth he's experienced at the label – organ lines that soar nicely, with a complexity that Smith never had in his early years – given strong rhythmic support from Johnathan Blake on drums and Jonathan Kreisberg on guitar! The middle core of the album is live – recorded at the Jazz Standard – and features work from John Ellis on trumpet, Jason Marshall on baritone, Robin Eubanks on trombone, and Sean Jones on trumpet – on titles that include "Bright Eyes", "Pilgrimage", "Two Damn Hot", "Track 9", and "World Weeps". The set also features two covers – both with surprising vocals from Iggy Pop – a nice take on the Timmy Thomas tune "Why Can't We Live Together", and a version of "Sunshine Superman". ✨✧ Matt HavilandSomething To Say ... CD
Connotation, 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
Only the second date as a leader from Matt Haviland – a trombonist with years of recordings for others under his belt – and a set that really marks a great leap forward for his strengths at the head of a group! Haviland's got a strong tone, and beautifully well-shaped solos – and he works here with an all-star group that includes Vincent Herring on alto, David Kikoski on piano, Ugonna Okegwo on bass, and Johnathan Blake on drums – plus work from Mark Gross on tenor and Bill Mobley on trumpet, each of whom play on three tracks on the set! The set includes some well-penned -originals, all with room enough to really open up – "Graham Benjamin", "Fillet Of Soul", "Finding The Words", and "The Way It Is" – plus versions of "Arietis", "Inner Urge", and "Driftin".
