✨✧ Bob DylanBlonde On Blonde ... CD
Columbia, 1966. Used ... $4.99
A landmark album from the mighty Bob Dylan – a 2LP set of studio work, which was quite rare at the time – and a set that has Dylan stretching out all his creative powers in newly different directions! The album had a long genesis in the studio – some early work with The Band, then Dylan breaking off with Al Kooper and Robbie Robertson to head down to Nashville – where they interacted with key country session musicians to make this masterful blend of music – work that's not country at all, but which is also moving past Dylan's folk roots too – with a blend of music that still as mindblowing today as it was back in the mid 60s! This is definitely one of those double-length sets that makes fantastic use of all the extra space – overflowing with gems that include "Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35", "Visions Of Johanna", "Pledging My Time", "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again", "Leopard-Skin Pill Box Hat", and "Just Like A Woman". CD
(2004 remastered edition.)

Roswell Rudd & Toumani DiabateMalicool ... CD
Universal (France), 2003. Used ... $6.99 12.99
A really compelling set from trombonist Roswell Rudd – one of our favorite players of the 60s avant garde, and an artist who's started to grow tremendously since coming out of his recent retirement! The set is a brilliant criss-crossing of styles – as Rudd's working here with Mali-based musicians led by kora player Toumani Diabate, in a set of post-colonial world jazz that recalls some of the best Paris-based experiments in the genre during the 70s. Rudd's tone is darkly evocative – juxtaposed nicely against the percussion and stringed instruments of the ensemble – and the album makes for a really striking new chapter in his long career! Titles include "Hank", "Johanna", "Malijam", "Sena Et Mariam", "Bamako", "Rosmani", and "Jakie-ing". CD

VariousHouse Of Ages – Classic, Rare, & Unreleased Dance Music – Selected By Jeremy Newall ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
Not really the house of ages – given that most of these cuts are so rare, they're only making their first appearance here – but a great little collection that reminds us that there's still so much to discover in the funky underground of the last few years of the 20th Century! Jeremy Newell really knocks it out of the park with this one – and comes up with a deep, soulful collection of house tracks from the farthest reaches of the scene – either work that only appeared on very obscure singles, or didn't even make it past tape back in the day – leaping forth here with a wickedly groovy sound that's more than worth the wait. Titles include "Take Me Higher" by Jimi Polo, "I Promise (more beats for passion mix)" by Mark Rogers, "Keep On Pressing (KOT orig mix)" by Sean Grant, "More I Get" by Teleport feat Russell Patterson, "Yo Razor" by Arts & Craft with Razor Cain, "Don't Run Away" by Soul Dhamma, "When I See You (tight voc)" by Frank Youngwerth with Ernie, "Freak It (Tony Humprhies inst mix)" by Johanna, "Mainline (Roger S Ego trip mix)" by Tribal House, "We Can Make It (unreleased dub)" by UBQ Project, and "Deeper (Benji Candelario's deeper than deep unreleased mix)" by Susan Clark. ✨✧ Bob DylanLive 1962 to 1966 – Rare Performances From The Copyright Collections ... CD
Legacy/Columbia, Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wealth of live solo Bob Dylan from the early to mid 60s – material that was once in the deepest darkest corners of Columbia's Dylan archives and have only scarcely seen any kind official release before now! Of course it's wonderful stuff, from the earnest early recordings from '62 and the next couple years – when even his studio recordings were still solo, but the live versions just have that urgent, unmanicured edge that's vital to have on record – to recordings from '65 & '66 of songs that were fleshed out big in the studio and on the road, too, which was once controversial and now just legendary, but here it's just Dylan with his guitar and harmonica for maximum intimacy. The recordings were done on the east cost of the US and throughout the UK, sequenced by recording dates – and it's a generous 2CD set of 29 songs – including "Blowing In The Wind", "Corrina, Corrina", "Seven Curses", "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright", "To Ramona", "When My Ship Comes In", Chimes Of Freedom", "One Too Many Mornings", "It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleeding", "She Belongs To Me", "Maggie's Farm", "Desolation Row", "Ballad Of A Thin Man", "Visions Of Johanna" and more. ✨✧ Ben Lamar GayOpen Arms To Open Us ... CD
International Anthem/Nonesuch, 2021. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ben LaMar Gay might well be one of the most creatively intense artists on the International Anthem label – and that's saying a lot, given all of the groundbreaking talents who've come to record for the company in recent years! And while Ben's previous record was completely mindblowing, this set really pushes things over the top – and has the artist at the helm of a large assemblage of musicians who provide all these different sonic elements to augment the intensity of his vision – as the leader handles cornet, organ, and a host of other instruments – while singing on most cuts, but in a way that's majestic and very much his own – neither soul, nor jazz – at least in familiar ways. The lineup features voices of many others – and instrumentation that includes Tomeka Reid on cello, Matthew Davis on trombone, Johanna Brock on viola, and Rob Frye on flute – mixed with spoken and sung passages from a number of others, including Angel Bat Dawid. Incredibly beautiful throughout – with titles that include "Hood Rich Happy", "I Once Carried A Blossom", "Slightly Before The Dawn", "Be Loving Me Some Of You", "We Gon Win", "S'Phisticated Lady", "In Tongues & Droves", and "Touch Don't Scroll". ✨✧ Jasper Van't HofEyeball/Solo Piano/Tomorrowland (3CD set) ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1974/1989/1996. New Copy 3CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Three albums by this wonderfully unique keyboardist! First up is Eyeball – a really nice mix of modes from keyboardist Jasper Van'T Hof – as some cuts feature the heavy electric modes we know from his MPS recordings of the 70s – but others feature a much more personal approach on acoustic piano! As with other records from the time, Jasper plays a range of keyboards here – from piano to Fender Rhodes to organ – and the group shifts a bit from track to track, depending on the mood – and features Wim Overgaauw on guitar, John Lee on bass, Zbigniew Seifert on violin, and Gerry Brown on drums. Lee and Brown kick in heavily on the jamming cuts, but lay back more on the mellower ones – and titles include "One Leg Missing", "Bax", "Viper Snake", "Eyeball 1", "The Rev", and "Schwester Johanna". Next is Solo Piano – a record that's a bit more down to earth than some of the electric 70s material from Jasper Van't Hof, but equally great in its own sort of way! The session has Jasper playing solo acoustic piano, mixing a few standards with even cooler original material that really makes the record shine! Titles include "Eyes", "7th Day Ticket", "Dinner For Two", "Skyline", "The Dodge", and "New Bob". Tomorrowland is a cool trio set from pianist Jasper Van't Hof – one that has him joined by the great Bob Malach on tenor, a player Jasper's worked with for years, and who really gets some great space to open up here! The third member of the group is the wonderful JF Jenny Clarke on bass – and titles include "Ventre A Terre", "The Quiet American", "Round About", "Ma Belle", "Mr Woof", and "Rutherford" – all nice original material! ✨✧ VariousNuggets – Luke Vibert's Selection ... LP
Lo Recordings (UK), Early 70s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Everybody's getting in on the funky sound library action! This set of rare funky gems was selected by Luke Vibert – who's confessed to a love of the odder and more obscure side of the 70s Brit sound library scene. The set's way better than you might think – as Luke really knows his stuff – and the tracks on here have a very different sound than the regular sound library funky instrumentals, with a lot more electronics, lots of keyboards, moog, bleeps, blonks, and plenty of funky beats! Luke's dug through the Southern, IM, and Chappell catalogs, and has come up with a blinding batch of tunes that are almost like 70s equivalents of the sort of music he's making today – only funkier! Titles include "Electronic Track 12" by Cecil Luter, "Soft Bossa" by Nino Nardini, "Xylo Spleen" by Eddie Warner, "Electrostalactites" by Anthony King, "Cleopatra" by Georges Teperino, "The Bungler" by Boneschi Electronic Combo, "Intimations" by Midas Touch, "On The Air" by Eddie Warner, "Pots & Pans" by Anthony King, "Zouche Drums 3" by David Holland, and "Strange Love Action" by Johanna Group. 27 tracks in all!
