✨✧ Zoot Sims With Joe Castro TrioLive At Falcon Lair ... CD
Pablo, 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real lost treasure for fans of Zoot Sims – a well-done live recording from the mid 50s, featuring longish tracks that have Zoot blowing with a trio led by Joe Castro! Castro's a under-acknowledge piano talent from the LA scene of the time – a player with a soulful edge on his best recordings, of which this previously-unissued set now stands! Castro's trio on the set features Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Ron Jefferson on drums – and the tracks are long, and very well recorded, especially for a live session of the time. The overall feel is very much in the mode of some of the best work on Prestige from the period, and titles include "Blues For Nat", "It's Always You", "Night In Tunisia", and "Swinging With Rudolph". ✨✧ Joe Pass & Paulinho Da CostaTudo Bem! ... CD
Pablo/OJC, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best Joe Pass albums from the 70s – largely because he's working with such a great group of Brazilian players! Besides percussionist Paulinho Da Costa, the musicians also include drummer Claudio Slon, as well as Oscar Castro Neves, Don Grusin, and Octavio Bailly. Tracks are light and breezy, with a good west coast Brazilian feel – and titles include "Tears", "Wave", "If You Went Away", "Luciana", and "I Live To Love". CD

AirtoLatino – Aqui Se Puede ... LP
Sobocode (Puerto Rico), 1984. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $34.99
An overlooked gem from Airto – recorded after his 70s years on bigger labels, but a set that almost tops all of them in the end! There's a wonderful mix going on here – a blend of rootsy and electric, and Latin and Brazilian – the former clearly from the placement of the record on New York's Montuno label – an imprint that did plenty of great sessions filled with Latin jazz! The shift makes for a fresh one for Airto – still plenty of room to show off his famous percussion impulses, yet in a slightly different way – often grooving in a Latin fusion mode that's a nice maturation from the CTI years. The set's filled with all-star players – including Jorge Dalto on electric piano, Raul De Souza on trombone, Joe Farrell on flute, Alphonso Johnson on bass, and Oscar Castro Neves on keyboards, guitar, and cavaquinho – and the lovely Flora's also on board to sing a bit on the set. Titles include the extended jammer "Tombo", plus "Aqui Se Pede", "Jump", "The Return", "Sin Salida", and "Anatelio". LP, Vinyl record album
(In great shape! Sobocode pressing.)

✨✧ Teddy EdwardsSunset Eyes (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1959/1960. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Teddy Edwards at the height of his powers – packing a tight, soulful punch that made him one of the most popular players on the west coast in the early 60s – and a great link between earlier R&B tenorists and the leaner sound of 60s jazz! Edwards has a nice gutbuckety tone at times – the qualities you might hear from Hank Crawford or David Newman in the way they blended their sounds – but the overall feel is leaner and cleaner, too – not many cliches, and a kind of straightforward sound that really shows the new inroads that the LA soul jazz scene was making at the time. The set features a shifting lineup – piano from Amos Trice, Joe Castro, and Ronnie Ball – bass from Leroy Vinnegar and Ben Tucker – and drums from Al Levitt and Billy Higgins – on titles that include a whopping batch of originals like "Teddy's Tune", "Tempo De Blues", "Vintage '57", "Sunset Eyes", and "Takin Off". Plus, this CD's got some great notes, excellent packaging, and even includes 3 unreleased bonus cuts! CD
(1998 West Coast Classics pressing.)

✨✧ June ChristyCool School – Songs For Grown Up Children ... LP
Capitol, 1960. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Amazing stuff, and easily one of June's greatest albums – even if it is an unusual one! The format here is a far cry from the boozier modes of June's earlier career – as the tunes on the set are mostly children's songs, redone as jazzier numbers by June and the Joe Castro Quartet – the latter of whom provides some rare small combo backing for Christy, in a lightly dancing mode that really makes the album work! And while you might expect the children's tunes to be simple-minded or cloying, June's delivery of the material unlocks the secret sense of loss, sadness, and longing that's often buried in the songs – completely transforming familiar numbers in a way that really leaves us breathless! Titles include "Kee Mo Ky Mo", "Small Fry", "Swinging On A Star", "Give A Little Whistle", "The Magic Window", "Baby's Birthday Party", and "Aren't You Glad You're You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono rainbow label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Teddy EdwardsTeddy's Ready! ... CD
Contemporary/OJC, 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
Excellent set of LA hardbop tracks by the great tenor player Teddy Edwards, with a group that includes Joe Castro, Leroy Vinnegar, and Billy Higgins. Edwards' tone is fantastic, and the tracks give him a chance to show off his soloing talent in a way that he didn't always reach on other recordings. Tracks include "Blues In G", "You Name it", "Higgins' Hideaway", and "The Sermon". CD

✨✧ Jimmy ScottI Go Back Home ... CD
Eden River (Germany), 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
The last album ever recorded by the legendary Jimmy Scott – the jazz singer who first recorded in the 50s, then spent decades in obscurity – only to be revived to great fame in the last 20 years of his life! This album's a wonderful tribute to Jimmy – as it features the singer's unique voice in the company of an all-star lineup – both singers and instrumentalists who help make the album one of his most special in later years! Backings often feature some light strings, underscoring the darker tones in the music – and players include Joey DeFrancesco on Hammond and trumpet, Kenny Barron on piano, Til Bronner on trumpet, and James Moody and Bob Mintzer on tenor. Guest singers include Oscar Castro Neves, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Renee Olstead, and even Joe Pesci – on titles that include "Love Letters", "If I Ever Lost You", "Motherless Child", "The Nearness Of You", "Poor Butterfly", "The Folks Who Live On The Hill", and "Everybody Is Somebody's Fool".
