Bill Holman & Mel Lewis QuintetJive For Five ... LP
Andex, 1958. Very Good+ ... $19.99
Sublime small group work from tenor saxophonist Bill Holman – and a record that really lets him stretch out with some longer-than-usual solo work! Holman's working here as the co-leader with drummer Mel Lewis – in a group that also features trumpeter Lee Katzman, bassist Wilford Middlebrook, and pianist Jimmy Rowles. The head arrangements are quite tight, and remind us a lot of some of Holman's work on charts for larger bands – but as the longish tunes unfold, the solo work is extremely dexterous – and supported wonderfully by some fluid work on piano by Rowles. Titles include Holman's classic "Jive For Five", plus "The Beat Generation", "502 Blues Theme", and "Liza". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has a half split top seam and a trace of a price sticker.)

John ScofieldHand Jive ... CD
Blue Note, 1993. Used ... $4.99
A really great funky moment from guitarist John Scofield – kind of a bridge between the chromatic hues of his music from the 80s, and the tighter, sharper direction he'd take in years to come! The set has some classic-styled soul jazz elements at the core, really living up to the cover image – including Hammond from Larry Goldings and tenor from Eddie Harris – both of whom really deepen the sound of the record, especially when Scofield is still sliding out into some of the fuzzier tones in his bag. Rhythms are nice and tight too – with Dennis Irwin on bass, Bill Stewart on drums, and Don Alias on percussion – and tracks include "Don't Shoot The Messenger", "She's So Lucky", "Do Like Eddie", "Dark Blue", "I'll Take Les", and "Out Of The City". David TreeceBrazilian Jive – From Samba To Bossa & Rap ... Book
Reaktion (UK), 2013. New Copy ... $4.99 25.00
That's Brazilian jive, instead of Brazilian music – as the author here shows just how much the larger Brazilian culture helps shape the sound of it's songs – a wonderful interplay between urban and rural, modern and ancient, popular and intellectual – forces that have come together to make some of the greatest sounds on the planet of the past 50 years! The book's a nice change from some of the more monolithic looks at Brazilian music – which sometimes hang a bit more importance on individuals than the culture itself – and there's also a great deal of work on the language that goes into the songs, which can range from freeform poetry to more traditional chants. 232 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh PrinceHe's The DJ, I'm The Rapper (with download & bonus album) ... LP
Jive/Zomba, 1988. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $24.99 25.98
One of those rare moments where a mainstream hit goes onto preface years of creative talent to come – even though the whole thing might have seemed like a bit of a one-off at the time! The young Will Smith is fantastic as the Fresh Prince – full of charm, at a level that really upped the game for so many other MCs at the time – especially because both his lyrics and his subject matter weren't maybe the most cutting-edge, but could really come over strong, thanks to the inherent stardom in his presentation! We could well argue that Will on the album introduced the whole idea of a crossover hip hop star – one able to do just about anything – but the whole record would be nothing without the creative skills of Jazzy Jeff – who went the complete opposite way after his pairing with Will – more expressive, more experimental – and even more firmly committed to the underground. Yet it was also that easy bridge between underground and fame that made early hip hop albums like this so great – as Jeff brings forward so many great musical moments on titles that include "Live At Union Square", "DJ On The Wheels", "My Buddy", "Rhythm Trax House Party Style", "He's The DJ I'm The Rapper", "Hip Hop Dancers Theme", "Jazzy's In The House", and "Human Video Game". LP, Vinyl record album
(Certified Undisputed Classics Of Hip Hop & R&B series – with download. Initial copies includes bonus LP "Certified Classics Vol. 1" with classic tracks by Nas, Outkast, Clipse, Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang, Aaliyah & more. 12 tracks in all!)

Too ShortLife Is – Too Short (with bonus download) ... LP
Jive/Legacy, 1988. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 21.98
The second album from Too Short, and like the first, a set that firmly established both the Cali scene and the Bay Area as a hotbed of harder-hitting hip hop! And sure, there were countless later gangsta acts that slide into the sorts of cliches that often marred the genre – but back at the start, folks like Too Short, Ice T, and NWA were really exploding with a sense of message that was quite a surprise to anyone whose ears were pointed to the east – really opening the door for countless other scenes to add their two cents – including the big wave that would soon rise from the south. The whole thing still sounds surprisingly fresh all these many years later – and titles include "Life Is Too Short", "I Ain't Trippin", "Nobody Does It Better", "Cuss Words", "City Of Dope", "Don't Fight The Feelin", "Rhymes", and "Pimp The Ho". Tribe Called QuestWe Got It From Here – Thank You 4 Your Service (with download) ... LP
Jive, 2016. New Copy 2LP ... $30.99 31.98
A hell of a comeback for Tribe Called Quest – maybe one of the best musical comebacks ever, and a fantastic reminder of why we loved the group so much in the first place! 18 years have passed since we last heard from the trio (now, sadly, a duo) – and that time only seems to have sharpened their sound, and given them a more powerful presence than ever! Everything we loved about them is still very firmly in place – that sense of collaboration, almost improvisation in a jazz-like way, and those moments of surprise and wonder at all the deft turns they can take in a short space. Yet there's also a new edge – one that might be even more powerful in this highly politicized moment in American history – a bite that the group never had before, and a larger social agenda that makes all of their incredible skills even more amazing, when focused on a target. We've certainly missed them – but the album's also well worth the wait! Titles include "Black Spasmodic", "The Donald", "The Space Program", "We The People", "Solid Wall Of Sound", "Dis Generation", "Kids", "Melatonin", "Enough", "Movin Backwards", and "The Killing Season". The mid 90s classic from Underground Kingz – they're commercial breakthrough, with all the uncompromising grit of their first few records on the lyrical tip, albeit with a stripped down soulful resonance to the beats. The gritty rhymes is the unifying element here, with tracks that split the difference between lean, crisply bouncing, hard-hitting production and surprisingly soul and funk steeped tracks. It works great on both sides of that style divide, and it's little wonder that made such a big impact at the time. Stands the test of time, too. Titles include "One Day", "Murder", "Pinky Ring", , "Touched", "F*** My Car", "Diamonds & Wood", "Good Stuff" and "Ridin' Dirty". LP, Vinyl record album

Jive, 1993. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A masterpiece from prime era Tribe Called Quest! Midnight Maurauders was Tribe's third LP, and even though there were no tracks yet credited to the Ummah, this is pretty much the beginning of Tribe's transition to that sound – with the same mellow, laid back vibe as their best early material, but less of an overtly jazzy reference in their sound. Phife and Tip are still on point lyrically, and honestly, this is pretty much the last LP that Tribe dropped that's got nearly all hits and no misses on it. With the cuts "Award Tour", "Midnight", "Electric Relaxation", "Clap Your Hands", "Oh My God", "The Chase, Part II", and "Keep It Rollin". CD

One of THE landmark hip hop albums – and the full length debut of great Tribe Called Quest! We hardly need to tell you about this classic – but it will always bear repeating. De La Soul might have kicked the door open on leftfield, anything goes artistry about a year or so earlier, but their friends and fellow Native Tongues Tribe's debut was a crucial reminder that the east coast was spinning out of one of the greatest creative growth spurts in hip hop history at the time. Pure excellence. Fantasy, 1975. Used ... $11.99
Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! The album's actually Cannonball's last full studio set, but it's also one of his greatest too – a very hip little record that features arrangements that are slightly bigger than before – almost a CTI sort of mode, with a similar CTI sense of space, sound, and timing! There's some great keyboards on the set – courtesy of George Duke and Mike Wolff – and other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Airto on percussion, Sam Jones and Walter Booker on bass, and Louis Hayes and Roy McCurdy on drums. The keyboards lead off most numbers, but they're followed strongly by Cannon and Nat – both of whom open up wonderfully in the magical setting of the record! Titles include great new takes on "Sack O Woe", "Work Song", "Jive Samba", "74 Miles Away", "Walk Tall/Mercy Mercy Mercy", "Country Preacher", "Domination", and "This Here" – plus "Hi Fly" and "Hamba Nami". Yes, it was a mega-hit – and yes, it was one of those records that everyone who lived through the 70s seemed to own at one time – but after all these decades, you can't deny the power of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack – especially for the way that it mixed club soul classics with new original material! Obviously, the Bee Gees cover placement make them big stars of the record – but the set's also got some great early disco gems – like "Open Sesame" by Kool & The Gang, "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps, "KJEE" by MFSB, "Calypso Breakdown" by Ralph MacDonald, "Fifth Of Beethoven" by Walter Murphy, "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman, "Boogie Shoes" by KC & The Sunshine Band, and "More Than A Woman" by Tavares. The Bee Gees reinvent themselves from the early days – and sing "Stayin Alive", "How Deep Is Your Love", "More Than A Woman", "Jive Talkin", "You Should Be Dancin", and "Night Fever" – and the set also features a few instrumentals by David Shire – "Manhattan Skyline", "Night On Disco Mountain" and "Salsation". Eugene BlacknellWe Can't Take Life For Granted ... CD
Luv N' Haight/Ubiquity, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $5.99 16.98
A massive amount of rare work from East Bay funk maestro Eugene Blacknell – an artist who never cut a full album, but managed to record a lot of great funky tracks over the years! This package is the first ever full length set to focus on Eugene's work, and it's a treasure trove of guitar-heavy groovers – starting with some rough-edged, raw R&B-styled funk – then moving into some fuller party funk and boogie-styled numbers! Eugene's guitar is fully in the lead on most tracks – and the vibe of the later work is in a space that's somewhere between Bootsy Collins and Shuggie Otis – a very good place to be, in our opinion. The package was done in collaboration with Eugene's son, and features rare singles, remastered cuts, and even some exclusive and live tracks that have never seen the light of day before. The set features a whopping 25 tracks in all, all with great notes on Eugene's music and story – and titles that include "Cousin John", "Mo Self", "Jump Back", "Getting Down", "The Trip", "Dance To The Rhythm", "For The Sake Of Love", "Jive Kinda Friends", "Wah Wah Funk", "Space Funk", "Don't Stop Now", "Grov-ve Monkey", and even a few rare radio spots! Never-issued work from this legendary fusion group – a 1971 live performance recorded in Rotterdam, and a set of tracks that's a perfect complement to the legendary Nucleus albums issued by Vertigo at the time! Leader Ian Carr is upfront on trumpet – but as with the best Nucleus recordings, this is definitely an all-out group affair – driven by very strong work from John Marshall on drums and Roy Babbington on bass – and filled with work from two different simultaneous electric pianos, handled by both Hywel Thomas and Karl Jenkins, the latter of whom also blows a bit of oboe. Other reeds are from Brian Smith on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – and all tracks are nice and long, and often quite funky – with titles that include "Snakehips Dream", "We'll Talk About It Later", "Song For The Bearded Lady", "Exit Interlude 1", "Persephone's Jive", "Exit Interlude 2", and "Oasis". Dark genius from the always-amazing Miles Davis Quintet of the 60s – a set that's a bit more subtle than some of the group's other efforts, but no less powerful – and virtually a blueprint for countless changes to come in jazz during the next few decades! The interplay of Davis' trumpet, Wayne Shorter's tenor, and Herbie Hancock's piano is worth the price of admission alone – a force that seems to flow of its own direction, pulled three ways equally, but always emerging as a sound greater than its parts. And adding in the subtle pulse of Ron Carter on bass and nearly melodic drums of Tony Williams, the sound is even more incredible – a well-crafted and evocative sound that's far more than jazz! Titles include versions of Herbie's "Riot" and "Madness", Shorter's "Nefertiti" and "Pinocchio", and Williams' "Hand Jive". A pretty hip batch of soul jazz tracks – recorded by drummer Frank Derrick live at Fiddler's nightclub in Chicago. Derrick's group plays a bit of everything – from Eddie Harris funky jazz to driving big band numbers to organ-heavy soul jazz numbers – all with a nicely heavy bottom that really gives the tracks an edge! The recording quality is nicely rumbly at times – almost giving the record the feel of some of those great local school band records from the same period – but the album's even better than those, because the tunes here are all original numbers – with a great overall conception that's a lot fresher than the usual album of this sort! Ernie Freeman was one of those cats who seemed as if he could do anything – a great pianist, a heck of an arranger, and a creative force who touched so many different kinds of music on the LA scene of the postwar years! Ernie's name appeared on countless records – his own big hits for the Imperial label, but also a range of other titles by different artists too – a variety of modes that always made Freeman one of those guys that can be tough to peg at a stylistic level – as you'll find his older records filed in the jazz, soul, and rock racks at record stores! This well-done set does a great job of illustrating the diverse talents of Ernie back in the day – filled with tunes that are mostly instrumental, and which step around genres in a great way – 32 titles that include "The Tuttle", "Leaps & Bounds", "Jivin Around", "Puddin", "Junior Jive", "After Sunset", "Summer Serenade", "Shape Up", "Theme From Igor", "Walking The Beat", "Lost Dreams", "Jamboree", "Conquest", "Swamp Meeting", and "Theme From The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs". A surprising 90s set from The Jazz Passengers – the New York group who'd worked in many modes other than just the straight jazz you might guess from their name, but who here maybe take things back to basics, especially on some of the cuts that bring in vocals from famous guests who include Deborah Harry and Elvis Costello! In some ways, Harry is the core of the set – as she unlocks this great jazz-based side of her style, in a way that gives her voice a whole new level of expression – one that's surprisingly strong next to the instrumentation provided by Roy Nathanson, Curis Fowlkes, and the rest of the group. Elvis Costello sings moodily on the tune "Aubergine" – but most other vocal numbers feature Deborah Harry, and include "Pork Chop", "Lil Darlin", "Maybe I'm Lost", "Imitation Of A Kiss", "Ole", and "Angel Eyes". Harry and Costello duet on "Doncha Go Way Mad" – and the set also features a nice instrumental remake of the Nat Adderley tune "Jive Samba". LP, Vinyl record album

Two early albums from this hip late 60s ensemble! Monday Night is genius work from the Jones & Lewis group – easily one of their best albums! If you've ever wondered why these guys got the chance to make so many records, check out this excellent early set and hear them at their finest. The group's a kick-ass one – with a host of all-star players like Jerome Richardson, Jerry Dodgion, Eddy Daniels, Seldon Powell, Roland Hanna, Richard Davis, and of course Jones and Lewis themselves – and the overall groove is similar to the Clarke-Boland Big Band at their best. Lots of rolling riffing rhythms, and breakout solos that really respect the members of the group – and which light a fuse under nearly every track. Features the funky groover "Mornin Reverend", plus "The Waltz You Swang For Me", "Say It Softly", "The Second Race", and "Kids Are Pretty People". Central Park North is excellent work from the team of Thad Jones and Mel Lewis – arguably one of their best albums from the late 60s, and a set that's got some really great funky big band numbers! There's a nice bouncing groove to the group that they normally don't have – possibly because Richard Davis is playing some Fender bass on the set, which brings in a nice focus on the bottom end – and the best numbers have a sock-soul feel that's in the best late 60s large group soul jazz mode! Titles include "Tow Away Zone", "Jive Samba", "The Groove Merchant", and "Central Park North". CD

One of the hippest bits of funk we've heard from the South African scene of the 70s – a record that mixes in plenty of currents from spiritual jazz, with a vibe that's very similar to the albums by Oneness Of Juju from the same time! The set's got this very universal appeal – earlier South African jazz modes blended with changes in 70s funk and soul – almost like a looser take on the music of Earth Wind & Fire, but with more focus on the instrumental elements overall! And those elements are great all the way through – with work from Dick Khoza on percussion, alongside lots of tenor, trumpet, trombone, and electric piano by a very jazzy lineup – plus vocals from Edger Dirgole too. Most tracks are nice and long, and really find their groove right from the start – on titles that include "Chapita", "Zumbwe", "African Jive", "Lilongwe", and "WD 46 Mendi Road". One of the strongest recordings ever made of the mad mad Lord Buckley! The album was issued in the late 60s for Frank Zappa's Straight label – but it features material recorded more than a decade before – at a time when Buckley was still alive, and one of the most bad-rapping comedian's to ever hit a stage. The approach is somewhat freer than some of Buckley's earlier sides – allowing the ersatz comedian a chance to really riff on a variety of subjects – talking with almost a jazz improvisational energy, in the way that made him a big favorite for the beat generation. The overall nature of the record is kind of hard to pin down – as it's not really comedy, just more of a freewheeling spoken session that's a bit jive, a bit beatnik, and plenty darn crazy! An excellent album of Latin material from Herbie Mann – and proof that he's equally great in just about any setting! The album's a rare Columbia Records outing from Herbie – but it's easily one of his greatest of the 60s, thanks to some really smoking arrangements from Oliver Nelson – plus an all-star cast of players that includes Carmell Jones, Dave Pike, Jimmy Heath, Patato Valdez, Willie Bobo, Charlie Palmieri, and a young Chick Corea! Tracks are short, tight, and very rhythmic – grooving in a snapping approach to Latin that's filled with plenty of soul, but which also features plenty of jazzy touches as well. Slammin live work from the legendary Brother Jack McDuff – a player who was almost better on the bandstand than he was in the studio! First up is the album Live – a killer, and one of three live sides McDuff cut for Prestige during the 60s – a monster session of stretched-out jazzy grooves, with many fine little dancers, and a raw soulful feel throughout! The group's one of Jack's best – as Red Holloway's tenor blows and hollers over the fingerpoppin' grooves delivered by a young George Benson on his first major guitar gig – and the soulful drums of Joe Dukes scatter across the place, taking the whole band into some incredible rhythms! Titles include cookin' live versions of "Rock Candy", "Sanctified Samba", "Undecided", and "A Real Goodun'". Live At The Jazz Workshop features a group that's one of Jack's best ever – a lineup that includes the twin tenors of Red Holloway and Harold Vick, plus incredibly sharp guitar from a young George Benson, and some of the most unique soul jazz drum work you'll ever hear – courtesy of the amazing Joe Dukes. Despite their individual strengths, which might make this whole thing an ego-fest – all players fit perfectly into place on the album's hard wailing batch of groovers, and groove together with a sympathetic energy that's simply amazing! You'll find enough samples on here to cut a lifetime's worth of hip hop LPs, and the funky tracks will have you coming back to the record again and again! Tracks include "The Queen", "The Rumble", "Mayor Get Away", "The Jive Jungle", "Creeper", and "Ghetto Expressions". This expanded 2CD edition features a bonus disc with a full 28 tracks of extra material – unreleased takes, mixes, acapellas, and instumental versions of album tracks plus a slew of untitled interludes! ✨✧ MoversKansas City ... LP
Gallo (South Africa), 1979. Sealed ... $23.99
A stone classic from one of the hippest groups on the South African scene of the 70s – and one of the few who could compete well with American soul groups of the same time! The cover makes the album look like some overlooked New York club treasure from the period – and the feel of the music is similar too – with long tracks, a nicely percolating groove, and soulful currents that would be right at home in the underground! Yet there's also some slight South African elements too – maybe a bit of township jive, or riffing guitar, which sets the whole album apart in a really great way. The vibe is like some of the really underground Cali-soul of the early 80s, with the fresh and unusual touches that we love in the work of the P&P label too – and although vocals figure on most tracks, the real highlight is the unusual work on keyboards and guitar. Titles include "Funky Fly", "Shanana", "Beat", "Kansas City", "Work Is Done", and "Take It". LP, Vinyl record album

Sandy NelsonDrums Are My Beat 1962 ... CD
Jasmine (UK), 1962. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 20.99
An insane amount of work from drummer Sandy Nelson – the cat who was to the drums what The Ventures were to the guitar – carving out a whole host of hit instrumental records in a non-stop flurry of action at the start of the 60s! The work here is definitely from a very productive time in Sandy's career – as the set features all work done in 1962, a stunning amount of music for one short year – given that the 2CD set features 59 tracks in all, pulled from the albums Compelling Percussion, Teen Age House Party, Drums Are My Beat, Country Style, and Drumming Up A Storm – plus other hit singles too! The drums are only part of the charm here too – because although Sandy's got a tight sound, and gets in plenty of solos, the overall Liberty Records production and arrangements really help the tunes shine too. Titles include "Sandy", "Castle Rock", "Dumplins", "Junior Jive", "North Wind", "Drums Are My Beat", "Birth Of The Beat", "Drum Roll", "Day Drumming", "Drum Stomp", "Hum Drum", "Be Bop Baby", "Night Train", "Let The Good Times Roll", "Drums For Drummers Only", and "Drums For Strippers Only". Nite-LitersA-Nal-Y-Sis ... CD
RCA/Dusty Groove, 1973. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
A masterpiece of hard and heavy funk – from one of the best bands of the early 70s! The Nite Liters were a legendary funky combo that provided the backing for some of New Birth's best albums – but on their own, they were even funkier, and had a sound that was part JBs, part Meters, and all funky! This album may well be the group's best – their last for RCA, and a set that really has them honing their edge incredibly. The drums are amazing, the keyboards great, and the horns have this quality that's both complex, yet right on the money – making for a richness in sound that really sets the group apart from their contemporaries. A few singers from The New Birth provide chorus vocals on a few tracks – but most of the set is instrumental, and the record's one we'd gladly stack next to our Meters albums on Josie or JBs classics on People. Every track's a gem – and titles include "Drumology", "Excuse Me While I Do My Thing", "Serenade for a Jive Turkey", "Happy Hooker", "Craaashing", "Damn", "Pee-Foul", and a sweet cover of "Valdez in the Country" that's been sampled at least once over the years! Shuggie Otis & OthersIn Session – Great Rhythm & Blues ... CD
Goldenlane/Blues Spectrum, 1970s. Used ... $7.99
A pretty great overview of work that Shuggie Otis recorded while working in the studios at the Blues Spectrum label during the 70s – mostly backing up other singers in a series of sessions recorded by his dad Johnny Otis. The Blues Spectrum label was notable in that it featured work by a number of lost greats who'd been important in R&B in the 40s and 50s on the west coast, but who'd not made it into the recording studios in a number of years. Otis Sr got them back, recording for his Blues Spectrum label – and often gave their music a hipper, more 70s-styled sound – an effort that was clearly helped by the presence of Shuggie! The package for this one is great – with a good set of notes on the label and sessions, and images of the covers of the old albums too. Titles include "Driftin Blues" and "Big Legged Woman" by Charles Brown, "Shake Rattle & Roll" and "TV Mama" by Big Joe Turner, "Willie & The Hand Jive" and "Country Girl" by Johnny Otis, "Trackin Machine" and "Doin It" by Richard Berry, "Choo Choo Boogie" and "I Got The Walkin Blues" by Louis Jordan, "Chicken Shack Boogie" by Amos Milburn, "I'm The Midnight Creeper" and "Sugar" by Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, and "I Got A Big Fat Mama" and "Information Blues" by Roy Milton. Cherry Pop (UK), 1970s/1980s/1990s. New Copy 7CD ... $44.99 65.99
Essential work from one of the hippest British groups of the 70s – the amazing Real Thing, one of the few UK acts who could go head to head with soul artists from the US! The Real Thing groove is often heavy on strings and rhythm – a sound that's kind of an English take on the 70s grooves from the Philly scene in the US – tuned towards a slightly different end, and topped with a mix of soulful leads and soaring harmonies by the group. And like the Philly groups, these guys also managed to really grow and evolve over the years – which you can especially hear over a short space of time in their recordings of the 70s. The collection strongly focuses on those years – and offers up expanded versions of the Pye albums The Real Thing, 4 From 8, Step Into Our World, and Saints Or Sinners – all with as many bonus tracks as were on the original albums, if not more. Then, the final three CDs feature later material – one CD of material for Jive Records, one for RCA with remixes, and one more for EMI, Calibre, and Catawa Records. There's a massive 109 tracks in the set, plus a 28 page booklet of notes – with a huge amount of material that's not been on CD for years! CD

Stefon Harris plays vibes and marimba, Edward Simon is on Fender Rhodes and piano, and Eric Harland has a nice soulful touch on the drums. Vogue/BMG (France), 1956. Used ... $16.99
2 very rare slices of work from Martial Solal's postwar years – one 10" and one 7" EP session, both recorded in Paris in 1956, each with a different twist! The first half of the set features "Martial Solal & Les Kentonians" – a group that's not exactly all members of Stan Kenton's group, but plays in a very similar mode! Players include Solal on piano, Curtis Counce on bass, Mel Lewis on drums, Carl Fontana on trombone, and Don Rendell on tenor sax – plus a bit of trumpet from Vinnie Tano – and the tunes have a well-composed, chamber jazz sort of mode – a bit more like some of the small group mid 50s work on RCA by members of larger orchestras of the time, than any of Stan's original sides for Capitol. Oddly, the second half of the album's actually by a larger group – "Martial Solal & Son Grand Orchestre" – an ensemble with 5 trumpets, 4 trombones, and 5 saxes – all directed through short, tight original tracks that are heavy on the head arrangements, and played with a lot of dynamic modern energy. CD features 11 tracks in all – with titles that include "Blues Martial", "Steeplechase", "Jive At Five", "Why Not", "Au 4eme Top", "Midi 1/4", and "Derniere Minute". CD

The music is much leaner than before – heavy on basslines, beats, and keyboards – and Bubbha does a great job of sliding into electro-styled funk and soul modes, while still holding on to some of his own sound too. Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 19.98
An amazing world of music – rare funk, soul, reggae, and other grooves from Belize – all beautifully compiled in the rich Numero Music style! We're really stunned by the set – as we had no idea at all that Belize had anything going on at this level – and the collection is an amazing surprise to our ears, filled with new delights at each turn, and clearly marking Belize as a new funky capitol on our ever-expanding map of musical understanding. Numero really outdid themselves with this package – going far beyond their already-great collections of work from the Bandit and Capsoul labels – to dig up a range of tracks that have never really made it out to the world at large, but which bubble over with influences from American funk and soul at the time. The notes are great, and the booklet's got plenty of excellent images to back up the writings – but the music is the real star of the set, and is presented on 16 tracks that include "More Love Reggae" and "Boogaloo A La Chuck" by Lord Rhaburn, "Theme From The Godfather" and "Backstabbers" by The Professionals, "Can't Go Halfway" and "Shame Shame Shame" by The Harmonettes, "Things Are Going To Work Out Right" and "Rated G" by The Web, "Funky Jive (parts 1& 2)" by Soul Creations, and "Long Time Boy" by Nadia Cattouse. Jazzman/Now Again, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
The Jazzman label hits a whole new level of brilliance – as they turn their funk-trained crate digging skills to the world of spiritual jazz! The collection's an amazing batch of ultra-rare tunes – tracks that take inspiration from the John Coltrane/Archie Shepp work on Impulse Records in the 60s, then run with those roots in bold new directions – soaring, spiritual aims in jazz that reach for new freedoms, but never lapse into the totally-outside modes of free jazz! Instead, there's a really great balance here between structure and struggle – as many tunes often have a good rhythmic pulse, usually modal and soulful, then let the horn solos stretch out more in their own sounds and directions. The mix is amazing, as is the selection of tunes – rare numbers pulled mostly from American independent jazz releases of the 60s and 70s – most of which are as obscure as the funky 45s we normally get from Jazzman. As with the label's US funk compilations, there's full notes on all the music – a heck of a lot of detail on these artists – and tracks on the set include "Paul's Ark" by Morris Wilson Beau Bailey Quintet, "Ayo Ayo Nene" by Mor Thiam, "Nomusa" by Ndikho Xaba & The Natives, "The Afrikan In Winter" by The Positive Force, "Neveen" by Salah Ragab, "Ja Mil" by Hastings Street Jazz Experience, "Be There" by Leon Gardner, "Psych City" by Ohio Penitentiary 511 Jazz Ensemble, "Introduction" by James Tatum Trio Plus, and "No Jive" by Frank Derrick Total Experience.
