Little Bob (Lil Bob) & The LollipopsNobody But You ... LP
Jin/Mississippi, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99
Great work from Little Bob – aka Lil Bob, aka Camille Bob – a New Orleans soul singer with a nicely funky edge! The album's almost got more of a mid 60s James Brown inspiration than some of Bob's southern contemporaries – with backing from the super-tight Lollipops, who really know how to make all the instruments come down on the groove – but also still leave room for one of the horn players to step out with a smoking solo from time to time! Bob's got a mellow, heartbreaking vibe on some of the more laidback tracks – but then can really soar on the more upbeat numbers – showing an emotional range that's really wonderful, and which makes the album as much a deep soul treasure as it is incredibly rare. Titles include "I Got Loaded", "The Way It's Got To Be", "Nobody But You", "My Heart's On Fire", "Are You Ever Coming Home", "So In Need", "With These Hands", and "Look Out Mr Heartache". Art BlakeyIndestructible ... LP
Blue Note (Germany), 1964. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
Maybe one of the most famous records ever from master drummer Art Blakey – in part because of the cover, which has come to stand for the Blue Note aesthetic of the 60s! But despite that famous image, the music is more than worthy of attention – as the group features that unusual sextet lineup of the Jazz Messengers that made some amazing sounds in the mid 60s – Blakey on drums, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Cedar Walton on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass! Morgan and Shorter are really growing and pushing themselves in different ways than their work with Blakey at the start of the 60s – and the addition of Fuller, and especially Walton, really gives the group this rounded warmth that shows a new level of maturity – a quality that comes through both in the playing, and the writing – as songs are all originals by Walton, Fuller, Morgan, and Shorter. Titles include "The Egyptian", "Sortie", "Calling Miss Khadija", and "Mr Jin". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Makaya McCravenDeciphering The Message ... CD
Blue Note, 2021. Used ... $9.99
A really special album from our hometown hero Makaya McCraven – a set that's the drummer's debut on Blue Note, and which also has him bringing that label some of the magic that he's been cooking up for International Anthem! If you know Makaya's other records, you'll know that he works in a blend of jazz instrumentation and editing – a style that's much more sophisticated than previous "jazz remix" modes – as McCraven always has live jazz instrumentation at the core, but then uses editing to rework ideas after the performance. Here, the music is a blend of older classics from the Blue Note catalog, juxtaposed with contributions from Joel Ross on vibes, Jeff Parker and Matt Gold on guitar, Greg Ward on alto, Marquis Hill on trumpet, and De'Sean Jones on tenor and flute – a really well-chosen array of players who flesh out Makaya's ideas in a beautiful way. Titles include "Wail Bait", "Frank's Tune", "Slice Of The Top", "Sunset", "Ecaroh", "Black Rhythm Happening", "Monaco", and "Mr Jin". CD

✨✧ David WeissEndangered Species – The Music Of Wayne Shorter Live ... CD
Motema, 2013. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful tribute to the compositional genius of Wayne Shorter – but served up at a level that goes way beyond Shorter's original vision for his music! Trumpeter David Weiss always does a great job of re-exploring the best modern sounds of the 60s – and here, he arranges some key Shorter tunes for a largeish ensemble – a great group that features his own horn in the lead, plus alto from Tim Green, tenor and soprano from Marcus Strickland, tenor from Ravi Coltrane, trumpet from Jeremy Pelt, trombone from Steve Davis, and piano from Geri Allen! Other players in the lineup are great, too – and the set's got this really rich feel – unlocking all the colors and emotions of the compositions with the ensemble, yet still allowing plenty of room for a solo voice too. Titles include "Eva", "Mr Jin", "Fall", "Nellie Bly", and "Prometheus Unbound" – plus David's own "The Turning Gate". CD

Far OutNihonjin (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Everland (Austria), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 About April 1, 2022 (delayed)
Far Out, indeed – the early 70s album from Japan's Far Out – the only album we've ever seen by the group, before they went on to work as The Far East Family Bland – with just 2 slow building, tripped out, but still remarkably involving jams that each run the better part of 20 minutes! The first, "Too Many People" starts quite and builds into a mighty behemoth of head nodding guitar rock hypnosis, both electric and acoustic, with some English vocals, too. The title track follows, again starting slow and quiet, and pulling you in slowly before refusing to let go of your senses. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jackson Conti (Madlib & Mamao)Sujinho ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2008. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Great grooves from Jackson Conti – not a dude, but a duo – one that features Madlib teamed with Mamao, drummer from the legendary Azymuth! The album's got a really unique feel – one that mixes Madlib's chunky, fuzzy style of production with some of the cleaner, jazzier Azymuth grooves of late – a combination that shouldn't work so well, but which comes across with really amazing results! There's a bit of beats on the set, but a fair bit of the percussion is acoustic too – making for more warmth than before from Madlib – almost a transplantation of the Yesterday's New Quintet sound to the sunnier Rio scene. Keyboards have a strong role too – often with the sort of edgey, compelling tones you'd hear on the first few Azymuth recordings of the 70s – and other instrumentation includes bits of guitar, flute, sax, and other well-placed touches – but all used in weird ways that are somewhere between typical jazz and Brazilian modes. Titles include "Upa Neguinho", "Xibaba", "Sao Paulo Nights", "Brasilian Sugar", "Mamaoism", "Berumba", "Papaya", "Segura Esta Onda", "Sunset At Sujinho", "Tijuca Man", and "Waiting On The Corner". CD

A really cool side of work from the enigmatic Raymond Scott – the legendary midcentury figure who did a wealth of creative work in jazz, soundtrack, and electronic music fields! Turns out, Scott also recorded a heck of a lot of commercials in his studio – all in ways that embrace all the many modes that Raymond did so well – a good number of which also feature lead vocals from his wife Dorothy Collins – a great recording star in her own right! The songs here are all pretty darn short – usually just a minute or less – but the set features a whopping 82 numbers in all, and is a fantastic representation of this lost side of the Raymond Scott legacy – all packaged beautifully with plenty of notes, and sound quality strong enough to move this material way past the demo archive status. Includes ads and jingles for a wide variety of products – from Hamm's Beer, to RCA TV, Gold Medal Flower, Teryton Cigarettes, Krystal Hamburgers, Sprite soda, Revlon Hair Spray, and other big products for the 50s homemaker! Also includes a few rare jingles sung by Mel Torme, too. CD

Sekitanjin (Coal Man)Black Mountain Shadow ... LP
HMV (Japan), 2022. New Copy (reissue)... $49.99 59.99
Heavy funk with plenty of jazz – a really wonderful album from the Japanese scene, and one that mixes lead trumpet from "Coal Man" Sekitanjin with all these great keyboards and other funky bits! The style's a bit like some of the mid 70s work on CTI/Kudo records – with the bright lines of the leader soaring over some combo backings that feature riffing guitar, funky drums, and some great basslines – all held together with keyboard parts that are every bit as great as the trumpet! Given the lead element, there's a vibe here that's a bit like some of the Don Ellis soundtrack material of the 70s – or maybe even a feel as if Freddie Hubbard were scoring a blacksploitation flick – on a set of 8 instrumentals that are all pretty darn great. Nara Leao recorded some incredible albums at the end of the 60s in Brazil – and she returned to greatness in the 80s with records like this – done with a different sound that really marked a strong second chapter in the singer's career! The record features a fair bit of bossa nova classics, but updated instrumentally by arranger Roberto Menescal – still light and lovely, but with slight contemporary elements in the instrumentation – balanced by that very unique way that Nara has of singing – almost the depth of a great European singer, but with a Brazilian sense of balance that never bogs things down at all. A really lovely record – with titles that include "Wave", "Sublime Tortura", "Ate Quem Sabe", "Eu Preciso De Voce", "La Vem Voce", "Voce E Eu", "Telefone", and "Sabe Voce". CD

Joe HendersonPage One (Non-RVG remastered edition) ... CD
Blue Note, Mid 60s. Used ... $6.99
One of the first true moments of genius from tenorist Joe Henderson – his debut as a leader for Blue Note, and a set that already has him knocking it out of the park, and setting a tone for a whole new generation! Right at the start, Joe was as distinct a saxophonist as recent predecessors like Wayne Shorter or Hank Mobley – but like both of them, he had a voice that was all his own – and already stretching past more familiar tenor modes, at a level that would make Henderson one of the most important players in years soon to come! But he's already great here – and is working in a suberpb group with Kenny Dorham on trumpet, McCoy Tyner on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums. LaRoca's very free on the drum kit, and gives the set a rhythmic looseness that's a bit of a hint at some of Joe's 70's recordings – and that style's even further supported by Tyner's long flowing lines on piano, and Dorham's sparkling work on the trumpet! Includes the classic reading of Kenny's "Blue Bossa", plus the titles "Recorda-Me", "Jinrikisha", "La Mesha", and "Homestretch". CD

Great live material from Wes Montgomery – very nicely recorded, and featuring the bulk of a live show that took place on March 27, 1965, in Paris! The group features Harold Mabern on piano, Art Harper on bass, and Jimmy Lovelace on drums – and the overall approach of the record is quite different than some of Wes' larger group studio sessions of the time. Tracks are all mostly long, and Wes is working in some really great solo modes – still as tight and soulful as ever, but really taking a lot of chances and working through some techniques to much greater impact than on the shorter studio tracks. Titles include "Jingles", "Twisted Blues", and "Full House". CD

Philips (Japan), Early 60s/1998. Used ... $34.99
Although not as familiar in the US as other Brazilian artists of the time, Os Cariocas were perhaps the leading vocal group of the early bossa years, and their albums were all great jazzy interpretations of bossa material, done in the same sort of 4-part male harmony perfected by the Hi-Lo's and Four Freshmen. This Japanese CD brings together 2 of their rare albums from the early 60s – A Bossa Dos and Mais Bossa Com – for a total of 24 tracks of groovy bossa harmony! We've never seen these albums before, but they're both great, and a superb addition to our growing collection of rare bossa material. Titles include "Adjinho Bossa Nova", "Tem Do", "Vivo Sonhando", "Pra Que Chorar", "Rio", "Samba Do Aviao", "Tambem, Quem Mandou", and "Telefone". An amazing lost trove of work by electronic music Raymond Scott – sounds that were never issued commercially, and which may well represent the last corner of his genius yet to be explored! The music here was all created in Scott's home studio on Long Island – and is a fantastic blend of playful modes and more exploratory sounds – very much in the spirit of Bruce Haack or Perry & Kingsley at the time, and maybe a bit like the electronic work of Piero Umiliani – but with a weirder, wilder vibe overall! There's definitely a few noisy moments – ala Soothing Sounds For Baby – but many of the tracks are short experiments, and also include some jingles or commercial music too – which makes for a fantastically large array of analogue elements throughout. The package also features detailed notes, and a look at this obscure chapter of Scott's career – a time when he was maybe at his most experimental, with amazing results. Titles include "Ohio Bell Mystery", "Idea 35", "Nice Sound 3", "Cindy Alternate", "The Toy Trumpet (demo 1)", "Rhythm Sample", "Tone Stepper", "Super Cheer", "Baltimore Gas & Electric Test", "Nice Set Up 7", "Cyclic Bit 3", "Sparrows (part 1)", "Ripples (fugue)", and "Auto Lite Wheels (effects)". Truly tremendous work from saxophonist Kamasi Washington – a set that may well even blow away his groundbreaking Epic album – given the scope of soul and spirit in the music! As with the previous project, this one's double-length, but maybe feels even more fitted to the mode – as Washington leads this incredible ensemble that unifies a jazz group, orchestra, and choir – all at a level that might even top some of Alice Coltrane's early 70s albums for Impulse! There's a richness in vision here right from the start – music that knows what it is, where it's going, and what it can accomplish – very personal, but also very welcoming too – just the right sort of spirit to help get the nation back on track! Washington blows tenor throughout – and gets great help from Cameron Graves on piano, Brandon Coleman on organ and keyboards, and Miles Mosley on bass – whose work alone really seems to drive the proceedings! Titles include "Can You Hear Him", "Fists Of Fury", "Will You Sing", "Journey", "Street Fighter Mas", "The Space Travelers Lullaby", "The Psalmnist", "One Of One", and "The Invincible Youth". Comes with a bonus CD called The Choice – with the Kamasi-composed "The Secret Of Jinsonson", "Agents Of Multiverse" and "My Family", plus covers of "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and "Ooh Child" – it's another 38 minutes of music hidden in the center of the cover! Not just a fantastic album from Ethiopia's legendary Asnakech Worku, but also a great setting for Hailu Mergia too – as he plays organ on the record, and produced the whole thing too! Worku sings and plays the krar – an Ethiopian harp, but one with a very raw sound – almost more metallic than melodic at times, and recorded with a lot of echo too – which seeps out to the vocals, and the eerie keyboard lines provided by Mergia – with only a small bit of drums for accompaniment! The package brings together a wealth of rare work by the Zombies – not only new versions of tunes from their legendary Odyssey and Oracle, but also rare "lost" late tracks (recorded before the band split up and never issued), live material, early singles, and even some extra cool bonus bits – ads for the group, some done by the group, and the tracks that the Zombies did for the film Bunny Lake Is Missing! On top of all that, it's got a monstrously cool booklet, with loads of cool photos, great notes, and the kind of information that makes this set way more than the usual snoozy box set. And unlike the Pet Sounds box set, it's not just 4CDs of the same songs over and over again! Our idea of heaven, truly – and filled with 119 magical tunes that we never tire of hearing! The first CD features early tracks – singles and the Begin Here album. CD2 features Odessey & Oracle, plus the whole lost rare album. CD3 features more rare tracks from the studio – demos, alternate versions, and more. CD4 features 29 tracks, live on the BBC – including a jingle for the Kenny Everett Show! CD

A very unusual collection – one that features all sorts of rare French advertisements from the previous century – a good number of which are songs performed by some of the bigger names of the time! The set's got an unusual format, in that it mixes straight radio ads with songs and jingles – a really striking sort of presentation, and one that will make you feel like you've tapped into Parisian radio at mid-century, spinning through the years as you spin the dial! Most of these tracks were never issued to the public at all, and are pulled from rare tapes and transcriptions – serving up a whopping 88 tracks in all – performed by artists who include Charles Trenet, Jean Valton, Louis Aragon, Ray Ventura, Pierre Daragon, Nicole Ratte, Henri Salvador, Maurice Chevalier, and others – to advertise products that include Cinzano, Gilette razors, Ricard, and even the comic character Tintin! 30M (Germany), 2022. New Copy ... $32.99 34.99
A beautiful look at the contemporary scene in Tehran – music that we never would have heard otherwise, were it not for this well-done set! There's definitely a number of tracks that echo some of the older Iranian sounds you might expect, but those are also mixed with some more contemporary moments – and some especially great cuts that bridge the gap between generations by somehow balancing older acoustic elements with a dash of modern electronics and beats! Yet throughout it all, the sound is never gimmicky or overdone – these aren't cheesy remixes of older music, but really heartfelt explorations of music and meaning – served up on titles that include "Rotenburg 2020" by Otagh Band, "Sorna Lorestan" by Ehsan Abdipour, "I May Never See You Again" by Saba Alizadeh, "Pipe Dreams Metempsychosis" by Sote, "Balal Balalom" by Parastoo Ahmadi, "Naked City" by Rojin Sharafi, and "Kolber" by Siavash Molaeian & Kasra Faridi. Luaka Bop, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 27.98
A really mind-bending collection of African grooves – one that digs deep into the West African scene of the early 70s – and comes up with a massive batch of tunes that really opens up our understanding of the music! The sound here isn't just 70s Afro Funk – as the tunes include a range of tripped-out styles that make the best use of electric instrumentation, psychedelic production, and important influences from American soul artists at the time. There's some amazing guitar on some of the best tracks – ringing out with a sound that's chromatically complex while also being tripped-out and funky – in a way that complicates the rhythms without totally taking them apart. If you've dug the tunes on previous sets like Africa Funk or Ghana Soundz, this is one to take that sound to the next level – and really open up your ears! Titles include "Keleya" by Moussa Doumbia, "Love's A Real Thing" by The Super Eagles, "Minsato Le Mi Dyihome" by Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo De Cotonou Dahomey, "Porry" by Sorry Bamba, "Allah Wakbarr" by Ofo & The Black Company, "Sanjina" by Orchestre Regional De Kayes, "Ifa" by Tunji Oyelana & The Benders, and "Zinabu" by Bunzu Sounds. Concord, 2009. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Benny Golson's one of those players who never lets us down – and here, into his 80th year in on the planet, the man's still burning strongly and soulfully! The set's got a very solid, put-together sort of sound – the quality that's always made us seek out Golson albums of any vintage, amazed at the depth of feeling and richness of creativity that Benny can bring to even a simple sort of date. This one's definitely a cut above, though – self-produced by Golson, and featuring a lineup with Eddie Henderson on trumpet and flugelhorn, Steve Davis on trombone, Mike LeDonne on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Carl Allen on drums – all rock-solid players who help Benny flesh out his sound beautifully here, reaching some nice sensitive points at times, then sliding back into warmly soulful grooves. Al Jarreau guests with vocals on a version of "Whisper Not" – and other titles include "Verdi's Voice", "Uptown Afterburn", "Gypsy Jingle Jangle", "From Dream To Dream", "Grove's Groove", "L'Adieu", and "Love Me In A Special Way". ✨✧ Joe HendersonPage One ... LP
Blue Note, 1963. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
But he's already great here – and is working in a suberb group with Kenny Dorham on trumpet, McCoy Tyner on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ T2It'll All Work Out In Boomland (3CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Decca/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The one and only album from T2 – an incredible British group with a sound that should have been huge! Like some of the best of their generation, T2 is a trio – featuring some heavy guitars from Keith Cross, vocals by Peter Dunton, and rumbling bass from Bernard Jinks – all brought together with a sound that's sharply focused in its vision, yet freely expressive in execution. There's a great mix here between jamming passages and softer sensitivity – never as forced as on some of the early King Crimson records, but with a similar sort of sharpness and range that should have gotten this one to a much wider audience. Titles include the side-long "Morning", plus "In Circles", "JLT", and "No More White Horses". This wonderful package really increases the too-small legacy of the group – as it features 16 more bonus tracks – titles from the rare T2 record, and other material recorded in 1971 and 1972 – tracks that include "Fantasy", "Careful Sam", "Minstrel", "T2", "PDQ", "Closing Your Eyes", "Into The Red", "And Time", "Looking Back", "Questions & Answers", "The Gambler", and "Timothy Monday". ✨✧ Francis BebeyAfrican Electronic Music 1975 to 1982 ... LP
Born Bad (France), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Not what you might expect when shopping for African music – unique electronic sounds from Cameroon musician Francis Bebey – as heavy on keyboards as other 70s work is on guitar! There's still plenty of acoustic elements in the mix though, too – lots of earthy percussion at the bottom, which links some of these tracks to other styles of the time – even though some of the more unusual tunes here have these great electronic sounds that almost feel like they came from the late 70s German underground! The mix of modes is breathtaking – as if Moebius and Roedelius recorded with musicians from Lagos – shaking off the colder sounds of the Conny Plank side of the spectrum, to come up with a warm new style that's really unique! Titles include "La Condition Masculine", "Sahle", "The Coffee Cola Song", "Super Jingle", "Pygmy Love Song", "Agatha", "Catching Up", and "Divorce Pygmee". LP, Vinyl record album

This collection features the guitar genius with an American group that features Harold Mabern on piano, Arthur Harper on bass, and Jimmy Lovelace on drums – and the presence of Mabern is great – with a familiar feel to other live tour tracks from that stretch – open, soulful, and a great return to the small combo sound of Wes' roots – different than the larger charts he'd use in the mid 60s. Titles include "Full House", "Twisted Blues", "Round Midnight", "Yesterdays", and "Jingles". CD

A fantastic chapter in the continuing evolution of trumpeter Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – a set recorded at the Blue Note in New York, just days before the city had to shut down in 2020 – and a record that maybe carries with it some of the urgency of that moment! Scott's studio records in recent years have really blown us away – but it's maybe even more amazing here to hear him working with the group in this frenzy of colors, tones, and rhythms! In addition to conventional trumpet, Christian blows a reverse flugelhorn, which has an amazing sound – and his group features really intense work on drums from Cory Fonville, whose efforts on the kit seem to set everyone else on fire – a lineup taht features Lawrence Fields on piano and Rhodes, Kris Funn on bass, Weedie Braimah on percussion, and Elena Pinderhughes on flute. The music is tremendous – full of power, life, and message – on titles that include "Diaspora", "The Last Chieftain", "X Adjuah", "Huntress", "Incarnation", "Songs She Never Heard", "Guinnevere", and "Sunrise In Beijing". A really unique little album – one that features sounds created in collaboration between Marcos Valle and Azymuth – all done as a specialty album for an airline in Brazil! The sound is breezy and dreamy – different than some of Azymuth's earliest music, but not that far off – and inflected with the warmer touches that Valle used on his records as the 70s moved in – that almost-soundtrack style of sophistication, but still lean enough to groove! The music is rich in keyboards from Jose Roberto Bertrami – and the whole thing's got a breezy vibe that would have been perfect kicking back in a leather seat in first class, looking down at the beaches of Rio below! Shorter than the usual TV Tunes 2 LP sets, and with only 50 tracks – but, oh, what tracks they are! Loads and loads of cool old TV commercials, back from the old days – when nobody cared how goofy they sounded, and when they spent way too much money on studio hacks churning out cool little grooves and jingles. Grapefruit (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A huge amount of work from The Merseybeats – a group who were Liverpool contemporaries of The Beatles, and named after the body of water alongside the city – but who were way more than a copycat combo overall! Like many other 60s British groups, The Merseybeats start out with a sound that draws heavily from American soul and blues influences – yet they quickly shift to a super-catchy, jingle-jangle sort of sound – harmonizing nicely on the leads, and finding ways to come up with really groovy songs that that use their hollow-body guitar lines to best effect – setting things apart with that special British sound that made the UK scene quickly so different than the US by this time. And although the group have had a few greatest hits packages over the years, this 2CD set is the first time they've fully gotten their due – as the package is overflowing with material – 34 tracks by the core group, and another 29 by the later Merseys and other related musical aggregations – including The Crackers, Kinsleys, Johnny Gustafson, and The Quotations. That's a whopping 63 tracks in all, served up with a big set of notes – almost acting like a microcosm of the Liverpool scene itself! CD

A stunner of an album from this legendary group – hard and funky right form the start, with these long tracks that have the TP Orchestre showing that they can jam just as hard and long as Fela Kuti & Afrika 70 – but in a very different way! The percussion is great, the guitar lines completely seductive, and the horn parts have all these cool, crispy currents that really shade in the sound in a wonderful way – making for a rich balance against the leaner qualities of the guitar lines that cut back and forth over the grooves in a really wonderful way. A killer sets from one of the African greats of the 70s – with three long tracks that include "Davi Djinto Super No 2", "Homin Si Tche", and "Aiha Ni Kpe We". LP, Vinyl record album

A brilliant record and a big step for Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, at a point when he truly was stretching out creatively in a big way – seamlessly mixing classic electric jazz influences & modern electronic touches! Scott is on trumpet, his custom sirenette & reverse fluegelhorn, mixing earth-bound sounds and spacey atmosphere throughout – and the band includes Braxton Cook on alto, Lawrence Fields on piano and Rhodes, Corey King on trombone, and Corey Fonville and Joe Dyson Jr on a pretty impressive mix of drums and sampler atmosphere. It starts off strong with "Sunrise In Beijing", an impressive showcase for flautist Elena Pinderhughes, who really helps this one take flight over the spacey & stuttering percussion. Other tracks include "Twin", "Perspectives", "West Of The West", "Liberation Over Gangsterism", "Of A New Cool", "Tantric", "The Last Chieftain" and more. CD

A huge amount of material from Tommy James & The Shondells – a group that most people know for a string of jingle-jangle gems in the 60s, but who kept on making some really wonderful music over the course of the 11 albums included in this set! The group at the start were already pretty darn amazing – able to create the kind of catchy, groovy tunes that really exploded out of AM radio in the mid 60s – but as the years went on, Tommy moved into headier territory, and started to stretch out from the pop psych sound of "Crimson & Clover" – one of his last great hits, but also the gateway to all the wonderful music heard here in the second half of the set! The collection is a real ear-opener – and includes lots of music that hasn't been on CD in any form for years (or vinyl for that matter too!) – plus bonus tracks on most of the records, and other rare material – all bundled up with a heavy booklet of notes. 140 tracks in all – and the albums Hanky Panky, It's Only Love, I Think We're Alone Now, Gettin Together, Mony Mony, Crimson & Clover, Cellophane Symphony, Travelin, Tommy James, Christian Of The World, My Head My Bed & My Red Guitar – and bonus tracks and singles too! Resteamed (UK), 2011. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
British pianist Stan Tracey recorded a famous album in the 60s, based upon a work by Dylan Thomas – and here, he revisits the poet again as inspiration for a jazz record – with results that are equally great as that classic from the past! Despite the title, the record's not entirely a Christmas album – although it does feature some narration from Child's Christmas In Wales – yet the core of the record is the wonderfully swinging modern work by Stan and his combo – almost illuminating Dylan Thomas' story in the way that Vince Guaraldi would illuminate Charles Schultz, but with longer tunes and even bolder musical ideas! Other players include Simon Allen on tenor, Andrew Cleyndert on bass, and Clark Tracey on drums – and titles include "Prothero's Dilemma", "Wagging The Bag", "Easy For Leonardo", "Jinks", and "Pudding & Mince" – most bracketed by some narrated passages from the book. Zanzibar dance grooves from the nation-building Ujamaa years of the late 60s – all done in a style that's somewhat different and a bit more laidback than work from neighboring scenes at the time! Most of the numbers here build up a base with percussion, bass, and a handful of guitars – all rumbling together in a gently earthy sort of way – never too harsh or too sharp, and often with the guitars ringing alongside each other nicely, as one player steps out with an occasionally more pronounced line. Lyrics also show a strong sense of teamwork – mostly sung by the group together at once, creating more melodic force on top of the rhythms on the bottom. As always with this series, the CD comes with a great set of notes that includes a history of the scene and the artists – and the package features 17 tracks that include "Nipeleke Kwa Baba", "Dada Nihurumie", "Maneno Niliyokwambia", and "Mpenzi Nakukanya" by Nuta jazz Band; "Kaka Umenishinda", "Mpenzi Ya Kijinga", and "Salamu Zako Nimezipata" by Atomic Jazz Band; "Likembe Ya Moro" and "Nimechoka" by Morogoro Jazz Band; and "Usiwaamini Shemeji" and "Shangazi Naomba Taiti" by Jamhuri Jazz Band. One of our favorite entries so far in the Zanzibara series – a great set of grooves from the late 70s and early 80s – warmly laidback material, with a bubbling undercurrent of funk, and a sound that's somewhat different from other African material we've heard from the time! The rhythms often dip and turn slowly – almost with a watery feel, as the basslines groove up and down in midtempo waves of sound – often woven together with some tighter guitar parts, which also dance along nicely – topped by vocals that have a sweet undercurrent of sadness, too. The package is a great way to sample some of these lesser-heard gems – and it's put together with the same level of care you'd expect from Buda's Ethiopiques series. Titles include "Uzuri Wa Asili", "Baba Anna", "Rufani Ya Kifo", and "Mwana Acha Ujinga" by Dar International Orchestre; "Talaka Ya Hasira", "Nawashukuru Wazazi Wangu", "Taxi Driver", and "Kassim Amefilisika" by Mlimani Park Orchestra; and "Nilitaka Iwe Siri" by Vijana Dance Band.
