Lucky ThompsonBop & Ballads – Hamburg 1959 & 1960 ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), 1959/1960. New Copy ... $9.99 16.98
Bop, ballads, and lots more too – played by reedman Lucky Thompson at a time when he was really picking up some new ideas on the European scene! As with contemporaries like Sonny Criss or Benny Bailey, Thompson was great before he hit the continent – but then came back from Europe a completely changed man – a musician whose sense of expression had evolved strongly in a very short time – to a point where the music on these recordings from 1959 and 1960 is quite different than his American records from a few short years before! Part of the change might come from pianist Michael Naura – who's on all these sides, and is one of the hippest cats working in Germany at the time – but you can already hear Lucky opening up his tone and his inflections, especially on the numbers that feature soprano sax. Other players include Jimmy Gourley on guitar, Hans Koller on tenor, and the great Wolfgang Schulter on vibes – on titles that include "The World Awakes", "Brother Bob", "Yesterdays", "Deep Passion", "Thin Ice", and "Summertime". ✨✧ Guy LafitteJambo ... CD
BMG (France), 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever recorded by Guy Lafitte – a wickedly soulful set that's overflowing with Latin and modern touches! Lafitte's in the lead on tenor, backed by a group that features the groundbreaking George Arvanitas trio at its core, plus trombone from Sonny Grey and guitar from the great Jimmy Gourley. Arvanitas' group features some incredibly strong rhythm work from the team of Jacky Samson on bass and Charles Saudrais on drums – a pair that were one of the greatest bass/drum units working during the 60s on either side of the Atlantic – and equally well-suited to gently soulful moments as they were to full-on rhythmic romps! The album bristles with excitement from the word go – and features some surprising soul jazz groovers that have Arvanitas playing a bit of organ – as well as some great late nite numbers that really have Lafitte opening up on his horn. Titles include "Jambo", "Cote A Cote", "Jamaica", "African Night", and "Jamboree". CD

✨✧ Buddy Banks & Bobby JasparJazz In Paris – Jazz de Chambre ... CD
Universal (France), 1954/1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pretty hip stuff – recorded in Paris, but featuring some leading lights of American bohemia! The first half of the CD features work by a quartet led by bassist Buddy Banks, and featuring work by American players Bob Dorough on piano and Roy Haynes on drums, as well as the French musician Jimmy Gourley on guitar. Gourley's tone is excellent on the session, and he really dominates the proceedings over piano work by Dorough – especially on the tracks "I Love You", "Line For Lyons", "Night In Tunisia", and "Buddy Bank's Blues". The second half of the CD features a quartet with Bobby Jaspar on flute and the enigmatic Blossom Dearie on piano. Blossom doesn't sing on the set, but she works in a lovely way with Jaspar – providing some light lyrical backing that gives the tracks a nice little kick. Titles include "Old Devil Moon", "Flamingo", and "There Will Never Be Another You". CD

✨✧ Gigi Gryce & Clifford BrownGigi Gryce/Clifford Brown Sextet – Jazz Time Paris Vol 11 (10 inch LP) ... LP
Vogue (France), 1953. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An incredible pairing of two of the most important modern jazz talents of the 50s – trumpeter Clifford Brown and altoist Gigi Gryce – whose sense of structure on these tunes really gives Brownie a whole new space in which to shine! Gryce really seems to get at the mixture of sweetness and bite that Clifford can deliver when he's at his best – which comes through brilliantly in his solos, which are then matched by these raspy, soulful lines from Gryce on his alto. The group's a French one – and swing, but really let the American horn players take the lead – with Henri Renaud on piano, Jimmy Gourley on guitar, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Jean Louis Viale on drums. Tracks include "Baby", "Minority", "Salute To The Band Box" and "Strictly Romantic". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing – with obi! BVJJ 2965.)

A great collection that brings together early 50s work in the "birth of the cool" mode! The flipside features several takes of "All The Things You Are", "I'll Remember April", and "These Foolish Things", plus "You'd Be So Nice To Come To" with Jimmy Gourley on guitar, Henry Renaud on piano, Don Bagley on bass, and Stan Levey on drums. ✨✧ Lester YoungJazz In Paris – Le Dernier Message De Lester Young ... CD
Universal (France), 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful session that was Lester Young's last-ever recording! The session was cut in Paris in 1959, and features the rhythm section of the famous Blue Note club, home to many American expatriates in France at the time – a great setting for Young to really sparkle in these later years of his life. Kenny Clarke plays drums, Jamil Nasser plays bass, Rene Utreger is on piano, and Jimmy Gourley plays guitar – a group who are tight, but easygoing and laidback enough to really let Lester open up on tenor. Young's tone is amazing – and has touches of his classic sound, but is also filled with a somber sense that's really great – a sense of melancholy that really deepens the album. Titles include "New DB Blues", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "Three Little Words", and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was". CD

✨✧ Bobby JasperBobby Jasper Revisited ... LP
Inner City, 1953/1954. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
An all-tenor set from Bobby Jaspar – material recorded in Paris in 1953 and 1954, played with a variety of different groups! Jaspar's tenor has a really great sound here – kind of a Lester Young rasp that marks him as a very Getz-like musician at this point – but with a slightly more upbeat edge as well – working nicely alongside players who include Jimmy Gourley on guitar, Fats Sadi on vibes, Roger Guerin on trumpet, Henri Renaud on piano, and Nat Peck on trombone. Titles include "Black Horse", "Kaba Soutra", "Strike Up The Band", "Up In Quincy's Room", "Capri", "Early Wake", "Jeux De Quartes", "Schabooz", and "Struttin With Some Barbecue". ✨✧ Brew MooreBrew Moore Live In Europe 1961 ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), 1961. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the all-too-few recordings of the great Brew Moore on tenor as a leader – a rare date recorded during the year of Moore's first appearance on the European scene – the start of a great 60s run that really had the saxophonist taking off overseas! Brew was already great on his handful of 50s releases in the US, but when he hit the European scene he seemed to change into an even more amazing player, almost overnight – one with a boundless sense of imagination that comes through in well-crafted, extended solos – and a sense of depth and soul that should have gotten Moore much greater recognition on these shores at the time! This set features really striking material from a few different settings – maybe the best of which is material recorded in Stockholm with a Swedish trio – on long tracks that include "Five Planets In Leo", "Buzzy", and "Apple Core". The set also features some tighter Parisian recordings – done at the Blue Note with a sweet quartet that features Lou Bennett on organ, Jimmy Gourley on guitar, and Kenny Clarke on drums – on the titles "Zonky", "Broadway", and "Satin Doll". Last up is one more track recorded for Danish TV with Paul Godske on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums – a nice reading of Brew's own tune "Ergo". CD

✨✧ Fats SadiSadi's Vibes – A Retrospective 1953 to 1961 ... CD
Fresh Sound (Spain), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A long-overdue look at the early work of Fats Sadi – a really great player on the European scene during the postwar years, and one who's best known for his 60s material on MPS/Saba, including recordings with the Clarke Boland Big Band! Here, though, Sadi's working in earlier years, and already sounding pretty darn great – a real modernist on his instrument, and working with a great array of really wonderful players – including a fair bit of material with the great Bobby Jaspar on flute and tenor, in groups led by both Fats and Bobby on a set of different recordings! The package also features work from Jimmy Deuchar on trumpet, Rene Thomas and Jimmy Gourley on guitar, Maurice Vander on piano, Nat Peck on trombone, and Francy Boland on piano and arrangements – especially great work on one seven track batch of material in the set. As with the other historical collections like this from Fresh Sounds, the package is overflowing with notes and images – and pulls together 23 tracks from releases that include the 10" albums New Sound Of Belgium No 4, Fats Sadi's Combo, Bobby Jaspar New Jazz Vol 2, and Bobby Jaspar Quartet – and the 7" EP releases Sadi Quartet and Sadi's Vibes. Titles include "Hittin The Road", "Hegor", "Gigi's Pad", "Ridin In", "Early Wake", "Big Balcony", "Sadisme", "Ad Libitum", "Laguna Leap", "Jeux De Quartes", "Doxology", "Le Jamf", and "Karin". CD
