Ralph BurnsBijou ... CD
Period/OJC, 1955. Used ... $3.99
Amazing small group work from Ralph Burns – a real standout, given the amount of his larger ensemble sessions in the 50s! The album features Burns on piano – overdubbed on some tracks – working with a combo that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Clyde Lombardi on bass, and Osie Johnson on drums – all gently modern players who fit perfectly with Ralph's vision for the record. Things aren't as dark or as arch as on some of Burns' bigger dates of the decade – almost a bit warm at times, especially thanks to Ralph's piano lines. Titles include "Autobahn Blues", "Echo Of Spring", "Spring Sequence", "Sprang", "Spring Is Here", and "Gina". CD
(Out of print, still sealed!)

Woody HermanThree Herds ... LP
Columbia, 1954. Near Mint- ... $5.99
A great collection of work from one of the hippest bandleaders to emerge in the swing generation – and one of the few to be able to tie his approach to the growing worlds of modern jazz and jump jive too! The set features material from Woody Herman's first three "herds" – the first, his initial recording group with Columbia; the second, his groundbreaking group with the "four brothers" group of horn players who included Stan Getz and Jimmy Giuffre; and the third his mid 50s revival group that had Ralph Burns turning in some great modern arrangements to rework that four brothers sound. The set features very lively notes from Woody himself – and titles include "Non Alcoholic", "Caldonia", "Good Earth", "Four Brothers", "Early Autumn", "Third Herd", "Mulligan Tawny", "Blame Boehm", and "Sidewalks Of Cuba". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono red and gold label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear and aging. Labels have spindle marks.)

✨✧ Ralph BurnsRalph Burns Among The JATP's ... LP
Norgran, Early 50s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A classic set of Verve tracks, arranged by the great Ralph Burns, very much in the same style as his work on the legendary Jazz Scene set. The set's far from a "soloists with strings" snoozer, and features some stunningly edgey arrangements by Burns, with purposefully off-kilter orchestral parts, which provide a startling counterpoint to solos by players like Flip Phillips, Jimmy Hamilton, Roy Eldridge, Ray Brown, and Bill Harris. Hard to find in any format, and with the tracks "Pimlico", "Perpetual Motion", "Sprang", and "Taxco". Comes in a great David Stone Martin cover, too! LP, Vinyl record album

James MoodyHi Fi Party Vol 2 (aka James Moody's Hi Fi Party) ... LP
Prestige, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
Genius work from Moody – and a larger session than usual – one that shows his strong talents with an expanded lineup! Moody's working here with players that have a definite Dizzy Gillespie Big Band bent – including trumpeter Dave Burns, trombonist William Shepherd, baritonist Pee Wee Moore, and pianist Jimmy Boyd – but they're working with Moody in a groove that's got equal parts modern alongside the bop, in a way that makes for some complicated arrangements that bristle with electricity. There's almost a bit of Gigi Gryce or Benny Golson in the spirit of the set – and Moody's work on alto is an especially good example of this on the record. Eddie Jefferson makes a great vocal appearance on "Disappointed" – and other tracks include "Little Ricky", "Big Ben", "Show Eyes", "Hard To Get", and "And You Called My Name". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue label with circle logo stereo pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Sonny RedOut Of The Blue ... LP
Blue Note, 1960. Near Mint- ... $34.99
An amazing set from altoist Sonny Red – a player who hardly ever got to make any albums as a leader, and who really burns brightly on this Blue Note classic! Red's got a tone on alto that's as deep and sharp as most tenorists of his generation – extremely soulful, but with a really raspy edge that's almost modern at times – a combination that's quite unique, and which makes his playing on a few key albums well worth tracking down. This album's one of the best of Sonny's few dates on record – and it features the saxophonist working with two different groups – both headed by Wynton Kelly on piano, and with either Sam Jones or Paul Chambers on bass, and either Roy Brooks or Jimmy Cobb on drums – a hell of a great rhythm lineup, no matter how you slice it! Both groups are right on the money, and the whole album swings very nicely – and titles include "Alone Too Long", "The Lope", "Nadia", "Bluesville", and "Blues In the Pocket". LP, Vinyl record album
(80's French reissue on Pathe Marconi. Cover has a LARGE upper cut corner, but looks nice otherwise.)

✨✧ James Moody/George WallingtonJazz Classics – The Beginning & End Of Bop ... LP
Blue Note, 1948/1954. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great late 60s album that brings together earlier bop sides recorded for Blue Note – key material from two of the biggest modernists in the early days of the label! The James Moody tracks are from an early 10" session – recorded in 1948 with Dave Burns on trumpet, Art Blakey on drums, James Forman on piano, and Cecil Payne on baritone – all working under the name James Moody & His Modernists, on tracks that include "Oh Henry", "Tropicana", "The Fuller Bop Man", and "Moodamorphis" – all penned by Gil Fuller. Side two features a 1954 session led by pianist George Wallington with Burns on trumpet, Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, and Frank Foster on tenor – on titles that include "Festival", "Bumpkins", "Frankie & Johnny", and "Baby Grand". LP, Vinyl record album
(Liberty pressing. A nice copy.)

✨✧ James MoodyWail Moody Wail Vol 3 (aka Wail Moody Wail) – Prestige Historical Series ... LP
Prestige, 1955. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Wail Moody, indeed – a killer set from the 50s that really shows the strong development of James Moody after the initial bebop years – already growing into one of the most forward-thinking jazzman of his generation! The group here is a bit larger than before – a septet, put together with both a mix of modern arrangements and some of the more freewheeling styles of a bop jam session – a great testament to Moody's growing ability as a leader. The lineup is a bit unusual, but in a good way – with work from Pee Wee Moore on baritone, Dave Burns on trumpet, Jimmy Boyd on piano, and William Shepherd on trombone – plus John Latham on bass and Clarence Johnson on drums – and the groove is open – informed by bop, but with a lot of early soul jazz in the mix, too – especially in the ensemble phrasing. Side one features the side-long jammer "Wail Moody Wail" – and other titles include "The Golden Touch", "The Donkey Serenade", and "Moody's Blue Again". LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note (Japan), Early 50s. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A great Blue Note reissue from Japan, and one that brings together 2 impossibly rare 10" recordings from the early LP days of the label! One side of the album features work by the legendary George Wallington – a killer bop player from the early days, and one who soon faded into obscurity. The record features Wallington in a lesser-recorded setting – with a larger group that includes firey horn players like Dave Burns, Frank Foster, and Jimmy Cleveland. Titles on that one include "Baby Grand", "Bumpkins", "Festival", and "Christina". The other side of the album features some stellar early work from Hank Mobley – caught in a tight bop quartet session, with Horace Silver, Doug Watkins, and Art Blakey. Tracks on that one include "My Sin", "Hank's Prank", and "Just Coolin". Prime material from the rare 10" LP years at Blue Note! LP, Vinyl record album
