Jimi HendrixBand Of Gypsys ... LP
Capitol, 1969/1970. Very Good ... $14.99
An amazing album of raw power from Jimi Hendrix – recorded on New Years Eve 1969, right as the 60s became the 70s – with a stunning sound that certainly presages the hard rock decade to come! Jimi's working with his trio that features Buddy Miles on drums and Billy Cox on bass – and the tracks are long, searing, and filled with the kind of heavy-duty guitar work that made Hendrix a legend right from the start – but which here shows just how much he'd grown as a player over the space of a few short years! Titles include "Who Knows", "Machine Gun", "We Gotta Live Together", "Power To Love", "Message To Love", and "Changes". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s red label pressing, in a 'gold award' cover with some surface wear, edge wear, splits at the opening.)

✨✧ Jimi HendrixElectric Lady Studios (3CD/blu-ray set) ... CD
Legacy, 1970. New Copy 3CD ... $57.99 64.99
A fantastic look at the final months of creativity in the too-short life of Jimi Hendrix – 39 tracks recorded at his legendary Electric Lady studios – 38 of which are issued here for the first time! The lineup is that fresh take on his trio – Billy Cox on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums – and the material within, recorded over the span of two months or so in 1970, really lets you hear the group in action – as it offers up alternates and remakes of tunes – and some interesting combinations as well! The set features variations on titles that include "Farther Up The Road", "Valleys Of Neptune", "Dolly Dagger", "Night Bird Flying", "Bolero/Hey Baby", "Straight Ahead", "Messing Around", "Tune X/Just Came In", "Come Down Hard On Me", "Ezy Ryder", "Astro Man", "Drifters Escape", "Drifting", "Angel", and "Room Full Of Mirrors". Also features a blu-ray disc – the documentary Electric Lady Studios A Jimi Hendrix Vision! CD
(Great package – with detailed notes and photos!)

Legacy, 1967. New Copy ... $19.99 29.99
Jimi Hendrix, live in Los Angeles – just days before the release of his classic Are You Experienced album – a record that changed a generation! Jimi was actually working that night as the opening act for The Mamas & The Papas – and we're guessing that his searing solos and raw musical vision really blew the whole crowd away – so much so, we wish the set had a visual component, so we could see reaction shots of the crowd! The Experience group has the classic lineup of Noel Redding on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums – and titles include "Purple Haze", "Wild Thing", "Fire", "Catfish Blues", "Foxy Lady", and a reading of "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". Reprise, 1968. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
A true classic by Jimi with the original Experience lineup – the third of three straight up masterpiece LPs to come out in just over a year's time by the group! You could call the leftfield astral effects in the mix experimental if you had to – innovations in the studio with echo, that hallucinatory backwards sound effect and other stranger bits – but the passionate, naturally expressive playing and singing by Jimi makes it all feel just right, and that Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell still don't get enough credit for being at the heart of such greatness. A massive 2LP effort that includes "Voodoo Chile", "Crosstown Traffic", "Electric Ladyland", "Little Miss Strange", "Moon Turn The Tides", "Still Raining Still Dreaming" and "All Along The Watchtower". Sony, 1967/1969. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jimi's legendary live recordings for BBC radio and television – live studio sessions from 1967 to 1969 – remastered from BBC tapes and sounding incredible! Most of the tracks feature the trio of Hendrix, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell at their fiery best, on classics like "Foxey Lady", "Fire", "Love Or Confusion", "Purple Haze", "Hey Joe" and more, plus some great, loosier, bluesier performances, such as "Drivin South", "Hear My Train A Coming" and more. The few guest musician appearances are incredibly notable – Alexis Korner plays some slide guitar on "(I'm Your) Hoochie Choochie Man" – and Stevie Wonder plays drums (!!!) on "Jammin" and "I Was Made To Love Her". Also includes the never before released bonus track "Burning Of The Midnight Lamp", a cover of "Day Tripper" and more. 37 tracks on 2 CDs. CD

✨✧ Jimi Hendrix ExperienceFreedom – Atlanta Pop Festival ... CD
Legacy, Late 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary performance from Jimi Hendrix – recorded at the second Atlanta Pop Festival just ten short weeks before Jimi's death, and a searing set throughout! The concert was the biggest that Hendrix ever played in the US – about 200,000 people in attendance – but the recording quality is very up-close and intimate, and very much in the same range as other important live performances by Jimi – making the set a key addition to his catalog! Tracks are nice and long, and filled with monstrous solos that really push past the studio versions – and Hendrix is in amazing form throughout, making us wonder what would have happened if he hadn't departed us all too soon. Titles include "Fire", "Lover Man", "Spanish Castle Magic", "Message To Love", "Room Full Of Mirrors", "Stone Free", "Voodoo Child", "Purple Haze", "Freedom", "All Along The Watchtower", "Hear My Train A Comin", and "Star Spangled Banner" – a nice touch, given that the set happened on July 4th, 1970! Reprise, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The great live compilation of classic Hendrix – pulled from incendiary performances at Isle Of Wight in 1970 and other benchmark west coast gigs from '68 to '70! It's as fine of a snapshot of Jimi as you could really hope for, as it features numbers that showcase his fiery blues psych side that pretty much single-handedly change rock guitar forever after, as well as more loosely furnished bluesy jams that demonstrate his love for the blues legends before him. So, it's Jimi paving the way and showing love for his predecessors – and historical importance aside, it's simply great stuff! Some gigs have Noel Redding on bass and others have Billy Cox. Includes "The Queen", "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", "Little Wing", "Fire", "Red House", "Johnny B Goode", "Lover Man", "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)". It's a pretty nice bunch of funk tracks with (supposedly) Jimi's guitar chopping away in heavy hard lines, and Lonnie Youngblood blowing away on hard heavy tenor. A number of tracks have vocals – we're not sure who by, although the record wants you to think that it's Hendrix. Good funky soul cuts include "Wipe The Sweat" – in three parts – and "All I Want". Other tracks include "Psycho", "Under The Table", and "Two In One Goes". Wild production values, too! LP, Vinyl record album

BMG/Bluebird, 1974. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Gil plays Jimi? Sounds like a gimmick, but it comes off pretty darn great – and it helps you forgive him for trying to convince the kids that he's not as old as his grey hair might make you think! As always with Evans, the key to the album is a beautiful balance between the strength of the players and vision of the arrangements – a hip mix of musicians who include Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, and both Ryo Kawasaki and John Abercrombie on guitars! Arrangements are great too – handled by Tom Malone, Warren Smith, and Howard Johnson – all of whom make the album way more than just an instrumental reading of Jimi Hendrix tunes – and instead a great platform for improvisation that uses tunes that include "Up From The Skies", "Foxy Lady", "Gypsy Eyes", "Voodoo Chile", "Angel", "Crosstown Traffic", and "Castles Made of Sand". Polydor, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99 14.99
A really compelling second set from Cat Mother & The All Night Newsboys – and quite different than the first! On their Polydor debut, the group had Jimi Hendrix at the production helm – but this time they're taking things on their own, with a feel that's nicely loose and freewheeling – and which really matches the woodsy image of the cover! The core mix of guitar and organ is still as tight as before – but it also gets some nice rootsy touches from violin, mandolin, and acoustic guitar – used in ways that echo folk and maybe preface a bit of redneck rock – yet which also have a bit more of a North Cali sort of sensibility in the long run. Hudson (DeJohnette/Grenadier/Medeski/Scofield)Hudson ... CD
Motema, 2017. Used ... $8.99
A group who take their name from the Hudson River Valley – beautifully pictured here on the front cover – and a quartet who work in an equally expansive array of sounds – all sharp elements of tone and timing from a lineup that features Jack DeJohnette on drums, John Scofield on guitar, Larry Grenadier on bass, and John Medeski on piano, Fender Rhodes, and Hammond! The Hudson influence doesn't just stop at the name, though – because all these upstate New York musicians often pay tribute to other artists who left the city for points north – Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, and The Band – each of whom gets a tribute track on the album. About half the set is originals by members of the group – and if we had to pick one instrument that seems to have the strongest voice in the group, it might be the guitar of Scofield – maybe in part because he can skirt the two different worlds so well. Titles include "Tony Then Jack", "Dirty Ground", "El Swing", "Hudson", "Lay Lady Lay", "Woodstock", "Wait Until Tomorrow", and "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall". CD

There's a bit of a new wave look to the cover, but the album's very much in the freaky, fuzzy, psych-influenced mode that we love from classic albums from the Ngozi Family – guitar-drenched sounds that are maybe some of the heaviest on the Zamrock scene of the time, and show this fantastic West African manifestation of the Jimi Hendrix legacy! The drums and basslines are as heavy as the guitars – and the vocals are often buried right down in the mix, which gives the lyrics a really sinister sort of vibe – almost beyond comprehension in a really cool way. An incredible album from one of the greatest talents on the Chicago soul scene of the late 60s – guitarist Phil Upchurch, a player with an amazing sound! Phil could work in worlds that were equal parts soul and psychedelia – making his guitar a perfect accompaniment for the best Chicago soul of Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, Minnie Riperton, and other greats of the time. This album's easily one of Phil's best – a mindblowing set of arrangements put together by the groundbreaking producer Charles Stepney – bringing together bits of jazz, rock, soul, and funk – all providing the perfect genre-blending space for Upchurch to solo! Given that there's no singer on the set, Phil's work on guitar is a lot freer than you're used to hearing – in a really great way, one that puts him in a space somewhere between Shuggie Otis and Jimi Hendrix! Brilliant all the way through, with tracks that include "Adam & Charlene", "You Wouldn't You Couldn't Be True", "Crosstown Traffic", "More & More", "Black Gold", "America", and "As You Said". CD

Erasmo Carlos is at his inventive best here – very playfully creative, yet in a way that refines his style from his trippier years – almost a reinvention of the singer's approach for a new generation of MPB – in a manner that some of the Tropicalia artists were doing at the time. The songwriting and production are great – and if the album were in English, it may well have been a global hit (although it did pretty well at home back in Brazil!) – and titles include "Mane Joao", "Largo Da Segunda Feira", "Sabado Morto", "E Proibido Fumar", "Preciso Encontrar Um Amigo", and "Mundo Cao". Common newcomers who buy Electric Circus for the single with Mary J Blige are going to be left with some head scratching – but if you like the spiritual/psychedelic Com that was hinted at on Like Water For Chocolate, this may be the follow up you were waiting for! This is still hip hop – with production by the Neptunes, Jay Dee, ?uestlove and others, but it's definitely a boundary stretcher. The mood runs from Roots style soul bumpers to Hendrix and Eugene McDaniels style feedback heavy freakouts. There's a guest on nearly every track, mostly from the Okayplayer camp and NuSoul titans, including Bilal, Omar, Pharrell Williams, Cee-Lo, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab and others. We won't lie to you, we miss the Chicago hip hop Common that kicked insight over raw and soulful productions, but you can't fault the guy for being an artist, and he really has crafted something original here. There's echoes here of modes to come by artists like Arnaldo Antunes, Lenine, or Chico Science – all of whom are clearly influenced by the spirit of Veloso and Gil. Acoustic guitars mix with rhythm samples and abstract production – and Caetano and Gil's vocals shine as wonderfully as ever – possibly even more so, given the warmth that comes from their age. Heavy duty fuzzy funk – and a landmark album from one of the most Hendrix-inspired groups of the early 70s! The style here is guitar funk with plenty of rock thrown in – all really fuzzed-up in production, and often a bit distorted – so that the group are kind of a lost link between the work of Betty Davis and the more mainstream sounds of Jimi! These guys also backed up Fugi on the massive "Mary, Don't Take Me On No Bad Trip", but the sound here's even heavier – even more guitar-jamming than early work by Funkadelic! ✨✧ Little RichardDirectly From My Heart – The Best Of The Specialty & Vee Jay Years (3CD set) ... CD
Specialty/Concord, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful selection of work from the great Little Richard – a 64 track package that not only includes loads of gems from his early years on Specialty Records, but also includes a lot of near-forgotten material from his great run on Vee Jay as well! The Specialty tracks are the stuff of legend – material that set a whole new standard not just for R&B, but for rock and roll, and coming soul as well – as Richard draws on roots from gospel and jazz, and fuses them into a rawer, tighter groove that's got plenty of New Orleans soul elements in the piano and rhythms – all to make things take off like a rocket right from the start. And even if you think you know the hits, there's plenty more here to discover too – loads of lost gems from these years that really make the collection great. Next up are the recordings for Vee Jay Records in Chicago – material that represents an early comeback for Little Richard – one of many over the years, and the one that's probably closest to the sound that first got him started! Although issued on Vee Jay in the 60s, the record's got less of a soul groove than you'd expect – and features Richard working on the west coast in a rough-edged R&B mode that's quite different than the smoother shift that was going down with most of Vee Jay's Chicago crew at the time. Most tracks have some super-sharp guitar – often played by a young Jimi Hendrix, as well as Johnny Guitar Watson and Black Arthur – and as usual, Richard's on the piano on most numbers, really wailing on the keys at a level that matches the pyrotechnics of his vocals! Package comes with a bonus 16 page booklet – and titles that include "Goin Home Tomorrow", "Without Love", "Talkin Bout Soul", "I Don't Know What You've Got But It's Got Me", "Oooh My Soul", "Jenny Jenny", "The Girl Can't Help It", "Hey Hey Hey Hey", "Rip It Up", "Directly From My Heart", "Memories Are Made Of This", "Groovy Little Suzy", and lots lots more! The Art Esemble of Chicago pay tribute to a surprising range of influences – from Duke Ellington to Otis Redding to Fela Kuti and Jimi Hendrix – but all in a set that's still filled with plenty of their trademark creative improvisation, too! In a way, the record's a great illustration of the changes that had come to the AACM over the course of two decades – still bold enough to break down new territory in jazz, but also feeling confident enough to claim a key role in, and link to, a larger history of African-American expression – one that's handled quite deftly here by the group! Lee Bowie joins the group a bit on synth, a relatively small addition to the core sounds from Lester Bowie on trumpet, Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds, Malachi Favors on bass, and Don Moye on percussion. Titles include a firey reading of Fela's "Zombie", which is great, plus covers of "No Woman No Cry", "Purple Haze", "These Arms Of Mine", and "Creole Love Call" – and the group's own "Ancient To The Future" suite. Mercury/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two killers from drummer Buddy Miles – back to back in a single set! First up is Buddy Miles Live – a really searing set of live performances from 1971, often done in a way that has the band stretching out and jamming heavily! The core group seems a bit bigger than usual – with a lineup that includes guitar and organ alongside some heavier tenor, alto, trumpet, and trombone. The horns come on strong, but are offset by lots of searing guitar from Charlie Karp – and Buddy, as usual, is a real monster on the drum kit. There's plenty of instrumental moments here that cook with funky soul intensity – and titles include "Wrap It Up", "Joe Tex", "Take It Off Him & Put It On Me", "Down By The River", "Place Over There", "The Segment", and "Them Changes". Message To The People is a really fantastic album from drummer Buddy Miles – an artist that many folks know for his key rock work in the Band Of Gypsys group of Jimi Hendrix, but a musician with an equally great ear for soul and funk as well! Miles began in Electric Flag, and certainly has ties to the world of psych – and here, he mixes funkier currents with lots of strong trippy guitar from Marlo Henderson – a player we don't know that well, but who adds some great lines that are a lot like some of the Phil Upchurch contributions over at Chess/Cadet at the same time. Miles sings on most numbers, with that nicely honest vocal approach we love so much – but there's a few instrumental moments too, and the set's got some great use of horns throughout, which brings in some southern funky currents too. Titles include "Joe Tex", "Place Over There", "The Segment", "Don't Keep Me Wondering", "Sudden Stop", and "That's The Way Life Is". CD
