Jimi HendrixBoth Sides Of The Sky ... LP
Legacy, Late 60s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99
Mindblowing lost work from Jimi Hendrix – studio tracks from the late 60s that were never issued at the time, brought together to make a completely sublime full length set! The package is way hipper and stronger than you might imagine – not studio snippets or replayed outtakes – but instead some strong full longs, and rare studio recordings of material that Jimi had mostly given the world in a live setting – all recorded between 1968 and 1970, and almost all issued here for the first time ever! The core group on most tracks is the trio with Buddy Miles on drums and Billy Cox on bass – but the tracks also feature some surprising guests – including a bit of organ and vocals from Stephen Stills, tenor from Lonnie Youngblood, and guitar from Johnny Winter. One tracks features Jimi just duetting with Miles on drums – and there's another that even features Hendrix on vibes. Titles include "Sweet Angel", "$20 Fine", "Power Of Soul", "Jungle", "Cherokee Mist", "Send My Love To Linda", "Woodstock", "Mannish Boy", "Lover Man", "Hear My Train A Comin", "Georgia Blues", "Stepping Stone", and "Things I Used To Do". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent reissue on 180 gram purple vinyl! Includes booklet.)

Jimi HendrixLive In Maui (3LP set with bonus Blu-ray) ... LP
Legacy, 1970. New Copy 3LP & Blu-ray ... $51.99
A legendary set of live performances from Jimi Hendrix – both sets recorded in Maui in July of 1970, presented here officially for the first time ever – along with a bonus documentary on the performances too! The set is kind of the true counterpart to the botched Rainbow Bridge project – and features Jimi with Billy Cox on bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums – really stepping out on some extended tracks that are filled with searing solos, and that undeniable charisma of Hendrix on stage – still wonderful, even near the end. Titles include "Hear My Train A Comin", "Fire", "Dolly Dagger", "Ezy Rider", "Message To Love", "Lover Man", "Spanish Castle Magic", "Purple Haze", "Red House", "Hey Baby/Midnight Lightning", "Straight Ahead", "Stone Free", "Jam Back At The House", and "Freedom". Also features a great DVD – with the documentary Music Money Madness – about the group's trip to Maui and the ill-fated Rainbow Bridge project – plus all of the existing 16mm footage of the two performances that day! Reprise, Late 60s. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The great live compilation of classic Hendrix – pulled from incendiary performances at Isle Of Wight in 1970 and other benchmark west coast gigs from '68 to '70! It's as fine of a snapshot of Jimi as you could really hope for, as it features numbers that showcase his fiery blues psych side that pretty much single-handedly change rock guitar forever after, as well as more loosely furnished bluesy jams that demonstrate his love for the blues legends before him. So, it's Jimi paving the way and showing love for his predecessors – and historical importance aside, it's simply great stuff! Some gigs have Noel Redding on bass and others have Billy Cox. Includes "The Queen", "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", "Little Wing", "Fire", "Red House", "Johnny B Goode", "Lover Man", "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)". Gil EvansGil Evans Orchestra Plays The Music Of Jimi Hendrix ... LP
RCA, 1974. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Gil plays Jimi? Sounds like a gimmick, but it comes off pretty darn great – and it helps you forgive him for trying to convince the kids that he's not as old as his grey hair might make you think! As always with Evans, the key to the album is a beautiful balance between the strength of the players and vision of the arrangements – a hip mix of musicians who include Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, and both Ryo Kawasaki and John Abercrombie on guitars! Arrangements are great too – handled by Tom Malone, Warren Smith, and Howard Johnson – all of whom make the album way more than just an instrumental reading of Jimi Hendrix tunes – and instead a great platform for improvisation that uses tunes that include "Up From The Skies", "Foxy Lady", "Gypsy Eyes", "Voodoo Chile", "Angel", "Crosstown Traffic", and "Castles Made of Sand". A record filled with cover images that run from Richard Nixon to Elvis Presley, to Mick Jagger, Caetano Veloso, Chairman Mao, Jorge Ben, Jimi Hendrix, and Andy Warhol – and a set whose sound definitely seems to live up to such heady company from the 20th century! Erasmo Carlos is at his inventive best here – very playfully creative, yet in a way that refines his style from his trippier years – almost a reinvention of the singer's approach for a new generation of MPB – in a manner that some of the Tropicalia artists were doing at the time. The songwriting and production are great – and if the album were in English, it may well have been a global hit (although it did pretty well at home back in Brazil!) – and titles include "Mane Joao", "Largo Da Segunda Feira", "Sabado Morto", "E Proibido Fumar", "Preciso Encontrar Um Amigo", and "Mundo Cao". CommonElectric Circus ... CD
MCA, 2002. Used ... $3.99
Common newcomers who buy Electric Circus for the single with Mary J Blige are going to be left with some head scratching – but if you like the spiritual/psychedelic Com that was hinted at on Like Water For Chocolate, this may be the follow up you were waiting for! This is still hip hop – with production by the Neptunes, Jay Dee, ?uestlove and others, but it's definitely a boundary stretcher. The mood runs from Roots style soul bumpers to Hendrix and Eugene McDaniels style feedback heavy freakouts. There's a guest on nearly every track, mostly from the Okayplayer camp and NuSoul titans, including Bilal, Omar, Pharrell Williams, Cee-Lo, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab and others. We won't lie to you, we miss the Chicago hip hop Common that kicked insight over raw and soulful productions, but you can't fault the guy for being an artist, and he really has crafted something original here. A great cover – a kind of rainbow drenched cut and paste photo collage of the contributors and inspirations with Com out front, sort of reminding us of Tribe's Midnight Maurauders, and even Sgt. Pepper. Tracks include "Ferris Wheel", "Soul Power", "The Hustle", the first single "Come Close", "New Wave", "Star *69", "Jimi Was A Rock Star" and more. CD

The legendary Betty Davis finally gets her due – emerging from the shadows of 70s funk, and finally sharing her story with the world! Betty gave the world a few fantastic records back in the day, but she's disappeared from the limelight for many years, partly out of choice – and this full length documentary finally presents her amazing story in all its detail, with plenty of help from the woman herself. The film mixes older footage, documentary shots, and animation – to tell the story not only of Betty's own music in the 70s, but also her association with Sly Stone, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, The Chambers Brothers, and others of her time. The feature runs for 53 minutes, but the DVD also includes bonus interview material with Betty Davis, and an interview with director Phil Cox. DVD

Well, it's not the 60s anymore – but this is still a wonderful album that reunites Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil in the spirit of their Tropicalia years – done in a style that shows that creative invention was still alive in MPB during the 90s! There's echoes here of modes to come by artists like Arnaldo Antunes, Lenine, or Chico Science – all of whom are clearly influenced by the spirit of Veloso and Gil. Acoustic guitars mix with rhythm samples and abstract production – and Caetano and Gil's vocals shine as wonderfully as ever – possibly even more so, given the warmth that comes from their age. A pretty great debut from Mike Finnigan – recorded after quite a long early journey in music, which included time in Jerry Hahn's Brotherhood group in San Francisco, and work with both Dave Mason and Jimi Hendrix – and countless other sessions that really helped him sharpen his chops before stepping out as a solo act! The record was mostly done down in Muscle Shoals, with production from Jerry Wexler – and the whole thing's got the strong currents of soulful influences you might expect – really augmented by help from Roger Hawkins on drums, Barry Beckett on keyboards, and even a bit of work from the Muscle Shoals horns! A really cool look at albums that never happened – planned projects that were almost produced, but which fell apart at some point in the creative process – leading to a surprisingly large legacy of lost albums by some of rock music's biggest stars! Sure, everyone knows a few of these – like The Beach Boys' Smile – but this book opens the door to lots lots more – including projects by The Kinks, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Buffalo Springfield, Madonna, The Sex Pistols, Beastie Boys, and many more. Best of all, the book presents the albums almost as if they actually existed – in short sections within larger chapters that each feature an imagined cover, projected release dates, and a short section that tells the story of the record – which often features a "what happened next" sidebar to show where the creative process landed. The great presentation really helps illuminate the material – and the book is 256 pages, in color throughout. Book

Mercury/Big Pink (South Korea), Late 60s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album from drummer Buddy Miles – an artist that many folks know for his key rock work in the Band Of Gypsys group of Jimi Hendrix, but a musician with an equally great ear for soul and funk as well! Miles began in Electric Flag, and certainly has ties to the world of psych – and here, he mixes funkier currents with lots of strong trippy guitar from Marlo Henderson – a player we don't know that well, but who adds some great lines that are a lot like some of the Phil Upchurch contributions over at Chess/Cadet at the same time. Miles sings on most numbers, with that nicely honest vocal approach we love so much – but there's a few instrumental moments too, and the set's got some great use of horns throughout, which brings in some southern funky currents too. Titles include "Joe Tex", "Place Over There", "The Segment", "Don't Keep Me Wondering", "Sudden Stop", and "That's The Way Life Is". CD

Tripped-out grooves from this legendary combo from Uruguay – a mix of candomble roots and wilder rockish touches – but also served up with a bit of Latin in the mix too! There's some great heavy percussion on the bottom of most tracks – and even when the guitars are fierce and fuzzy, the overall sound is nicely rhythmic, and often a bit funky – a great blend of global elements, and coming across with the same sort of power as the best Latin funk albums from Peru! There's perhaps a bit more psychedelia here than on those records, but never in a way that's too indulgent or dated – thanks to some lean, clean arrangements. ✨✧ Buddy MilesExpressway To Your Skull/Electric Church/Them Changes/We Got To Live Together ... CD
Mercury/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Four heavy classics from Buddy Miles – all together in a single set! First up is Expressway To Your Skull – a super tripped-out blend of rock, funk, and soul – easily one of Buddy Miles' most mindblowing albums – and a classic that never lets up at all! Buddy's leading the whole group on drums – really kicking things large from behind the kit – while the rest of the group jams in a heavy style that's got plenty of fuzzed-out guitar and jazzy horn riffs – virtually a blueprint for countless other rock funk groups that copped Buddy's style in years to come. The drums alone are worth the price of admission – but the whole album's so right, tight, and outta sight that it's been a favorite in our crates for years! Titles include "Train", "Let Your Lovelight Shine", "Don't Mess With Cupid", "Funky Mule", and "Wrap It Up". Electric Church is filled with bluesy soul from Buddy Miles – an album that was half-produced by Jimi Hendrix, and which showcases the really crowd-pleasing side of Miles' sound! Tracks are a mix of soul covers and original numbers – done in a mode that puts plenty of guitar out front in the mix, and which uses Buddy's screaming vocals a bit more than his heavier drums. Horns are used on most numbers to give them a bit of southern soul inflection, and titles include a great live jamming take on "Wrap It Up", the funky "Destructive Love", and the cuts "Cigarettes & Coffee", "Miss Lady", "Texas", and "My Chant". Them Changes is a landmark album of crossover funk – fuzzed out rock, soul, and jazzy licks all coming into play together – held totally tight by drummer Buddy Miles, the undisputed king of his scene! Buddy's drums are super-heavy – holding down his Freedom Express group with a heavy jazz-rock sound that would soon have a huge influence on other groups. Includes Buddy's original version of "Them Changes" – a tune that was instantly covered by everyone at the time – plus the cuts "Memphis Train", "Your Feeling Is Mine", "Dreams", and "Down By The River". Last up is We Got To Live Together – pure crossover genius from Buddy Miles – a great mix of funky soul and rockish touches – and the kind of record that easily put Buddy in the same camp as Sly Stone or The Isley Brothers with mainstream audiences of the time! Tracks here are a bit longer and more jamming than work by either of those two artists – with the kind of heavy guitar and horns that played heavily to the Fillmore crowd – but the overall sound of the record is a fair bit more soulful and even funkier than some other Miles' efforts from the earlier years too, with plenty of his tight drums in the mix! Titles include a great 12 minute reading of the title track "We Got To Live Together" – plus "Take It Off Him & Put It On Me", "Runaway Child", "Walking Down The Highway", and "Easy Greasy".
