✨✧ Ike Isaacs TrioIke Isaacs Trio At Freddie Jett's Pied Piper ... CD
RGB/Norma (Japan), 1967. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet soul jazz from the LA underground of the 60s – a great live set featuring the talents of bassist Ike Isaacs, best known to most for his work behind Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross during their glory years! The set's really really great – open ended tracks with a soulfully grooving sound, recorded in a very laidback setting that lets Ike and group go to town. Apart from Isaacs' bass, the real highlight is piano work by Jack Wilson – lean and fluid, with a harder-hitting sound than some of his own work of the time. Jimmy Smith (not the organist) completes the group on drums – and titles include "Impressions", "Soulin", "Red I", and "Walk On By". CD

✨✧ Esther PhillipsConfessin' The Blues ... LP
Atlantic, 1976. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A 70s album, issued at a time when Esther Phillips was really riding high with her records on the Kudo label – but a set that brings together unissued sides recorded for Atlantic in the 60s! The style is a great mix of rootsy soul and hipper jazz – arranged by Onzy Matthews on side one, with a care and quality that almost rivals Capitol jazz vocal sessions of the time – and performed live at Freddie Jett's Piper Club on side two – in the same mode as her classic Burnin album from the time locale! Philips is wonderful in both settings – with that distinct approach that's unlike any other singer we know – quite versatile, and at a critical point between her R&B work of the 50s, and her smoother Kudu jazz of the 70s. Titles include include "Cherry Red", "In The Evenin", "I Wonder", "Romance In The Dark", "I Love Paris", and "I'm Gettin' Long Alright". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cutout notch and light ring wear.)

✨✧ Black CrowesAmorica ... Cassette
American, 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
The one where The Black Crowes really started expanding their creative reach beyond being a hell of a solid torch carrier of the swaggery soul rock sound of The Faces and Stones! They're still not reinventing the wheel (nor trying to), but they do begin to jettison the classic rock radio approach of earlier records for a hard grooving, album-oriented sound that's a LOT stronger than we credited them for back in the day! They wear their influences on their sleeves as proudly as ever, but there's so many of them, and it all sounds so good...damn! Respect long overdue, and proudly paid. Titles include "Gone", "A Conspiracy", "She Gave Good Sunflower", "Ballad In Urgency", "Wiser Time", "Descending" and more. Cassette

Digable PlanetsBlowout Comb (clear & purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Pendulum/Modern Classics, 1994. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $39.99 42.99
A lasting classic from Digable Planets, and a record that really helped push the bar forward for hip hop at the time – at a level that's still kept this one strong all these many years later! Digable Planets weren't the first group to bring in some influence from jazz to their work – but they definitely found the right balance here, and a way of setting things up that was real and organic, instead of maybe just a nodding reference to the past that always felt a bit out of place. The use of live instrumentation next to samples is also key to the record's sound – common now, but pretty important at the time, especially in a world of declining sample access. The trio of Butterfly, Ladybug, and Doodlebug have a wonderful way of tripping through the lyrics – and titles include "The May 4th Movement Starring Doodlebug", "Black Ego", "Dog It", "Jettin", "Borough Check", "Highing Fly", "Dial 7", "The Art Of Easing", "KBs Alley", "Graffiti", "Blowing Down", "9th Wonder", and "For Corners". LP, Vinyl record album
(On "Easin" clear vinyl with purple center vinyl!)
